New Club Champion at The Notleys Golf Club I
n a new departure this year, The Notleys Golf Club Championship was completed over two weekends, 16th and 23rd July, and admirably supported by club members. Special thanks go to the competition secretary, Peter Watts, who gave up his two weekend of golf to make sure everything went smoothly on the day. As well as the 36 hole scratch Club Championship, each 18 holes was a separate competition which drove up numbers of competitors, including the second year of the Earey Cup – in honour of David Earey, whose support we sadly lost last year. Our first weekend competition, the Championship Handicap Trophy strokeplay, was won by Liam Gleeson with a nett 67 from his 19 handicap. Liam’s 40 stableford points were then added to his second weekend total which completed the competition for the 36 hole Stableford competition known as The David Earey Cup. However, Liam could not maintain the momentum with Mark “Fletch” Fletcher winning that trophy with an overall 79 Liam with club captain Dene I’Anson stableford points on right. (first round 38, second round 41pts) with a 2 point lead ahead of Liam. But Fletch could still not top the table for the second weekend stableford competition also, as he lost out on countback (over the back Fletch (left) with club captain 9) to Laurence Dene I’Anson.
“Lol” Mansfield with another 41 pointer, and so Lol took the Notleys Championship Shield, and earning himself a nice handicap cut too!
Laurence (left) with club captain Dene I’Anson.
Finally, the scratch competition over 36 holes, saw some excellent efforts from mid-handicappers competing against the lowers, but ultimately our recent Order of Merit champion Mark “Tich” Adams took second place with a gross 160 shots (79 and 81), to a fantastic showmanship of golf from 8-handicapper Eliot Dawson. With gross rounds of 76 and 82 (total 158) he was two shots clear of Tich, but was magnanimous in victory even deigning to forego the traditional winners speech, following congratulations from former Club Champion Derek “Del” Pettigrew, who has taken his challenge on to Gosfield Lakes this year. Eliot is shown here with his reward for some excellent golf well done Notleys Club Champion! -4-

At last an accurate launch monitor that can show you exactly how your current clubs perform against the new technology. Clubs from Callaway, Cobra, Lynx, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, Srixon and Wilson can be compared to find the most suitable ones for you.
The new Ping G400 has already had good reviews and we have seen some very good sales. This along with the Callaway's new steel head and with our Skytrac lunch monitor showing what they do against your current club there is plenty of 'try before you buy'. However there are products that are coming to the end of their life cycle and we need to make room for lots of new stock. Therefore we start our sale on Saturday 26th August at 9 am and as a special offer to Essex Golfer readers we are offering an additional 10% OFF all sale items on the first day only.
Whether your looking for more length, greater accuracy, higher launch, shaft suitability for your swing or filling those missing wedge gaps, Skytrak and the team at Nevada Bobs Colchester can help.
As always there will be some very good discounts across the board and also some one off deals that are very much 'fist come first served'!!
All the information is projected on a 42 inch TV screen so you can see exactly what is happening in real time and 3D!
Hopefully we'll see you on the 26th.
Suitable for Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges (right and left handed).
Don't miss out on these excellent bargains and help us make some room for the Autumn/Winter stock deliveries!

IT'S UNDER YOUR FEET. R
eading greens has always been a combination of historic learning, vision and sense of feel. Which is ok but how to explain this has always been difficult, I get down on my haunches look along the intended line with my pupils and say something like, can you see the put goes left to right and slightly downhill, the answer often comes back maybe! If you say so! How can you tell that! This is my historic learning at play. But there is a simpler way, feel what’s under your feet using your inner ear and balance to tell the slope. Try doing as I am in the picture, I have walked approx halfway down the put, and I am standing with my feet just outside my hips and just to the side of my intended line. If you feel as in this picture more weight on my right foot then it’s a left to right put. To what degree of slope depends on how much weight you feel on the foot, and of course vice versa for the right to left slope and even Weight distribution for flat straight puts. Give this a try next time you play, or maybe join me in Penina next spring for a more detailed look on green reading. Have fun Gary -8-

HOW TO DESIGN A GOLF SHAFT ... Y
ou may or may not know but I run several golf shaft companies for Europe. This gives me the opportunity to to do things outside of the scope of what golf club fitters and club makers would normally do. One of these things is to design golf shafts which I have been busy doing over the last few months. In this article I thought I would run you through the process of how we design a golf shaft. In the image you will see a True Temper specification drawing of their XP115 iron shaft. Step 1: Who’s It For? You need to know the type of player the shaft is for: professional player, club golfer, lady or a senior player? Although it’s difficult to generalise you can safely say that a professional would use a stiffer, lower launching/spinning shaft than the majority of club golfers. Once decided you would then decide the flight characteristics you want to achieve and the weight range the shaft needs to be in. This would include things such as launch angles, peak height, spin rates and landing angles, always taking into account the golfers delivery of the club and impact location! Step 2: Materials This will depend greatly on the caliber of player the shaft is designed for but with many ways to make a graphite shaft and with multiple different weights of materials there are many options. Why would this be a benefit? Materials used will influence the stability, performance and feel of the shaft. At this stage it is important to know where
you want the price point of the shaft to be. Step 3: S3 Machine Weighing in at around $250,000 we have a machine called ‘S3’. This machine is absolutely incredible in the fact that it can measure over 3000 points along the shaft, record everything you need to know about the flex, straightness, torque, mass, launch & balance point. It basically gives you the entire blueprint of a shaft. Step 4: Prototypes From the original design you then make up several variations for prototypes. These have no graphics and are great for ‘blind testing’ so players don’t really know what they are hitting so there are no preconceived ideas. Step 5:Testing You need a lot of it! On our latest project over the space of a few weeks we had many golfers test the shafts on the range. We compared the results on Flightscope to their own shafts and also other shafts that do a similar job to see how the prototypes performed – thanks to all my testers! Depending on how the ‘real world’ testing goes you can tweak the design to get the desired results. This does mean getting more prototypes made which takes around 3 weeks to arrive. Step 6: Graphics Once you are happy with the design it’s all about the paint. If it’s going to be on TV you want something that stands out, if it’s for the Wing Commander in the monthly medal it probably needs to be a little more conservative. You would not believe how long we talk about paint for – it goes on for months and requires more prototypes. So, although highly abbreviated I hope this gives you a little insight into part of what I do, I’m on the range at the USPGA at Quail Hollow in August and will tell you all about it next time.

Huge Numbers Take Up Golf in England E
ngland Golf ’s strategy to grow the game has inspired over 640,000 people to take up the sport in the last four years and more than 44,000 to join clubs. The growth was notably rapid in 2016/17, with over 237,000 new players and almost 17,000 new members recorded in the year to the end of March. Forty per cent of all new participants are female, highlighting the appetite for the game among women and girls. The figures are revealed in England Golf ’s latest Impact Report, which reviews the success of support for clubs provided by the county network, with the help of national partners. Sharon Heeley, England Golf ’s Head of Delivery, commented: “It’s very pleasing to report these results and we are looking forward to even greater successes in the future. We now have Club Support Officers in all counties whose role is to listen to and understand the business needs of clubs and help them to achieve their aims. “Our refreshed strategy to grow the game of golf in England puts the customer at the heart of everything we do and we’re encouraging clubs to take the same approach. We can help them to understand their market and the importance of providing their customers with the golfing experience they want, whether that’s competitive play, social golf, short format golf which fits into busy lifestyles, or the opportunity to meet friends and make new ones.” England Golf ’s business support has been used extensively, with over 1300 decision makers from 750 clubs attending Business Growth Hubs and demand-led workshops during the last year. A growing number of clubs are using resources to understand their market, including mapping tools which show where to find potential customers, who can then be targeted with effective marketing campaigns.
England Golf ’s strategy also has an over-arching aim to increase the number of women and girls playing golf. Women currently account for just 15% of club membership and the Impact Report details the success of initiatives to attract them to try the game. In the last two years, over 10,000 have taken part in women-only Get into golf programmes which have created over 2000 new members. Girls Golf Rocks, the recruitment programme supported by girl county players, was run in nine counties last year with 624 girls introduced to golf and over 230 joining clubs. This year Girls Golf Rocks is running in 15 counties. In addition, Family Golf Month was introduced last July and helped to get over 7300 people playing, with almost 200 taking out memberships. Other facts highlighted by the Impact Report show that over 180,000 people took part in Get into golf activities over the last four years with over 22,500 memberships created. The Golf Express campaign, which promotes short format golf, has involved over 32,000 golfers since 2015. www.englandgolf.org - 12 -

MANAGING YOUR GAME AND SHORT GAME STILL WINS!! W
atching Jordan Speith play and win the Open he reminded us that to shoot some good scores golf is still about managing your game, wedge play and putting. His ability to make a good up and down and plot his way around the golf course especially after his poor shots were the key to his win. His caddie and preparation where a big factor in that as well. So what can we do?
n Have a game plan – Workout a how you are going to play the course in a way that suits your ability. n Think what you will do if you hit a bad shot – We all hit bad shots it is inevitable. Rehearse what you will do if you do hit one and how you will get out of a bad situtation. Think what you ave done in the past and learn from your mistakes. n Have a short game lesson – We all can save shorts by improving our chipping, pitching, bunkers and putting. But many people only have lessons on their long game. A few sessions to sharpen up the short game can save you shots very quickly. - 14 -

Lily May, 15, Wins English Women’s Amateur ifteen-year-old Lily May Humphreys today became one of the youngest winners of the English women’s amateur championship. She scored a one-shot win over Hampshire’s Emma Allen (Meon Valley) and Lincolnshire’s India Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) at Lindrick,Yorkshire – after a gutsy fightback over the closing holes. Humphreys, from Stoke by Nayland, Essex, led throughout the championship until midway through the final round. She had set out on the last 18 with a two shot lead but, after dropping four shots on the way to the turn, she found herself a stroke behind Allen. However, she played the back nine in twounder par to Allen’s one-over to score her narrow victory. It’s the latest and biggest in a long string of titles amassed by the teenager – and a very special one. “It’s a different feeling to all my other wins and it definitely feels better because I knew I had fallen behind and I had to make myself get ahead again. I had to fight for it at the end and it really encouraged me to think I could get back,” said Humphreys. She had special thanks for her caddy, Yorkshire’s Charlie Daughtrey. They played together in the Sunningdale Foursomes and often caddy for each other, so his knowledge of Humphreys’ game was invaluable, particularly on the greens. Her early problems in the round stemmed from missed putts and she remarked: “Charlie helped me read the putts and encouraged me when I hit a good shot and I just got it back together. I started hitting good shots and if I missed a putt it

F
was for a birdie, which felt better.” She played the back nine in bogey-free twounder, her best performance of the week and it proved the title clincher. She birdied the par five 14th, hitting the green with a four-iron and then taking a steady two putts. “That got some adrenalin going,” she said. Humphreys followed up immediately with another birdie on the 15th, where a long drive left her just over 60 yards to the hole. Her pitch finished 12ft away and she rolled in the putt. Ahead of her, Allen bogeyed the 18th, and when Humphreys finished with three straight pars the title was hers. Now she’s got a couple of days at home before she sets off to Norway to represent England in the European Young Masters.

Summer Priorities… H HOW OW TO TO ACHIEVE ACHIEVE BALANCE BALANCE IIN N SEASON SEASON
G
olf requires practice ... and lots of it.The spring/summer months for golfers are usually spent on the driving range, the putting green and having practice rounds and the gym usually suffers. No time for the gym, no time for stretching, therefore fitness, strength and flexibility is heavily effected, making the winter hard work! So how do you avoid loosing all flexibility, all strength and all fitness in the summer months? To keep flexibility, strength and fitness you must achieve consistency! My most used word with clients! Consistency is absolute key.Train 2 x per week over a year and achieve better results than the person training 6 days a week but sporadically. Consistency builds muscle, gains strength and makes training so much more rewarding. My top tips for staying supple, strong and fit in the summer months for a golfer; 1. Stretch once per week and put this stretching session in your diary as an appointment. Routinely stretch just once per week to keep things ticking over, if its in your diary as an appointment you are more likely to do it. Once
per week will maintain the flexibility you have gained in winter. Once winter comes you can up the anti and develop the flexibility further. 2. Get a gym programme written for you that will target everything in one hit ... an integrated programme not isolated ... basically instead of training “legs”, “chest and back” etc you opt for integrating all muscle groups into 1 programme (integrated) with Core exercises included. Some HIIT training to keep fitness and again put in your diary as an appointment when this will be done. With an integrated programme there is no pressure to train 3-4 x per week, you just have to do this programme and as many times as possible which will fit with a busy golfing schedule. Golf is a very time consuming sport and stretching and training can be very easily forgotten about in season and this is where injuries happen! So just think 2 hours per week must be dedicated to stretching and training, then when winter comes, golf practice time can reduce and stretching and training time can increase.

Seventh Heaven for Stuart S
tuart Brown (Thorpe Wood) clinched victory at Bentley Golf Club thanks to a superb birdie two at the Seventh play-off hole to finally shake off the brave Chase Davis (Marriott Sprowston Manor Hotel). Brown struck a majestic 6-iron to eight feet before rolling in the putt on the 17th green to secure the third Order of Merit victory of his career.
Brown triumphs in Order of Merit play-off thriller at Bentley.
But that doesn’t begin to tell the story of a dramatic finale to two superb days’ golf at the magnificently prepared Essex venue. For most of the second day it looked as if Glen Portelli (Old Fold Manor) had the tournament in the bag. He made six birdies in nine holes from the third to reach nine-under-par – four clear, at that stage, of overnight leader James Scade But Portelli made a bogey at the 17th before enduring a horror finish to his round. He fired his tee-shot out of bounds on the 18th hole, only to reload and put himself into almost as much trouble. He eventually made an eight on the closing par-4 to finish at three-under-par. Steve Harris (The Shire) was already in the clubhouse on one better after a closing 68. In front of a packed clubhouse, it was all to play for as the final group of Scade, Brown and Davis approached the final green. Scade appeared to be in prime position – leading on five-under. But he was unable to get
up and down from the back of the green and had to settle for a play-off spot. Davis two-putted from mid-range to tie the clubhouse lead, while Brown curled home a 22footer for birdie on the final green to force his way into the play-off. Harris dropped away at the first extra hole – the par-5 10th – but the other three all made birdie. Davis appeared to have one hand on the trophy when he chipped in for birdie from just in front of the green at the next, especially when Scade’s 30-footer could only burn the edge of the cup. But Brown stood tall to sink a downhiller from 15 foot for his own birdie and the play-off was down to two men. The extraordinarily high standard continued at the next as the pair again played the par par-5 10th in one-under the card. Neither man backed off as the extra time continued. But finally it was Brown who pulled off a masterstroke, hitting a peerless 200-yard iron shot on the 17th to within a few feet from where he would make his fifth birdie in seven play-off holes. It was a welcome and timely reversal of fortune on a hole that had caused Brown all sorts of problems in regulation play during the tournament. Brown said: “I’d played 17 in three-over for the two days – a double-bogey on the first day and a bogey in the second round. So I was trying to claw them back to the 10th tee and take my chances there, rather than 17! “I didn’t have positive vibes but maybe the holes just level themselves out. Chase hit a nice shot into 15 feet but I took dead aim and pulled the trigger to eight feet. The putt was just outside the left edge and in it went. “Five-under through seven holes in the playoff, it’s just nice to know you can come up with the goods and deliver. There’s nothing better than that feeling.” For Davis it was a second play-off defeat in an Order of Merit event, having been pipped a year ago by European Tour winner Simon Khan in the London Open. The Order of Merit series takes a break now and returns in September with a double-header at Bishop’s Stortford and then The Rayleigh Club.

England Hat-Trick for Newton Green Juniors
N
ewton Green Golf Club juniors have pulled off a remarkable hat-trick by becoming Suffolk junior team champions again. It means they go forward to represent the county in the national county team championships for the third consecutive year.
They will be playing at Woodhall Spa, the headquarters of England Golf, on August 14 and 15. Newton took on their toughest final opponents to date when they faced the powerful Ipswich Golf Club at Bury St Edmunds, but came home by a single shot in a high quality encounter. The dramatic win by 108 to 107 Stableford points was sealed in the final game on the last green. Had Ollie Page (handicap seven) not sunk
his five foot putt on the 18th against Ryan Goodizi (9), the match would have gone into a play-off. But Page, who earlier fought off a dazzling array of shots by Goodizi, who returned figures five below his handicap, won the last hole with a birdie. Both players were in trouble with their third shots, leaving them 80 yards from the hole. But Goodizi came expertly out of a bunker and Page flew over a tree to finish close to the pin. The Ipswich player missed his putt and Page put Newton’s name on the trophy. Page had scored 34 to his opponent’s 41 points. In the other matches, Ipswich scratch player Habebul Islam scored an impressive 38 points, but was closely chased by Newton four-handicapper Harvey Watts on 36. In the middle match, Newton’s Ben Tatum (5) was too strong for his opposite number Will Garland (11) winning 38 – 28. Newton won without previous round performer James Cooper (4) who was unavailable and will also miss the final. The trophy was presented to Newton by Suffolk junior section chairman Trevor Mason.

H
ere is a very simple but effective putting drill which I hope will provide you with the feeling of the putter face travelling in the ideal direction towards the hole. According to research the position of the putter face when it strikes the ball has approximately 90%-93% influence on the starting line of the golf ball. This figure is staggering but as a coach allows me to concentrate on the most important areas of the player’s stroke. There are only three positions our putter face can strike the ball at impact. (Right handed golfer)
Starting Position.
n Open (right) n Closed (left) n Square or Neutral - 38 - 38- -
Open Putter Face.
Closed.
The position of the clubface with the ball at impact may well manifest itself as a compensatory movement by the player to correct an alignment issue. For the purpose of this article let’s assume we are aiming at our specific target with no stroke manipulation. To check your putter face at impact, set up as indicated in the photo then without taking a backswing push the putter towards the hole. If this is done correctly the ball will roll straight with no deviation as shown in the image. If the face is open then the ball will miss to the right and closed miss to the left, this simple drill provides feedback and feel which can be worked upon. “Push” five putts from approximately 3 feet from the hole then try to make five putts with your usual putting stroke concentrating on the “square” clubface at impact. I hope you find the drill useful, please let me know how you get on and start to feel putter face awareness.

he 2nd Summer Meeting of the Society of Essex Lady Captains took place at Upminster Golf Club in July. With 72 past and present Lady Captains, from 30 different clubs across Essex, it was one of the larger events of the year. With no cancellations on the day and all the ladies turning up everything worked like clockwork. Given the dry weather of late the course was in great condition and with overnight rain and some drizzle in the morning the greens were a little more receptive. By the time the first pairs teed off at 12 noon the weather had improved and the sun shone for most of the afternoon. Thanks to Upminster Golf Club for hosting the event and to all the staff on the day for their help in making it a fabulous day for everyone. There was much praise on the day for the truly delicious food in the evening which was a fitting end to a lovely day. Thanks to Lady Captain Kay Bone and her
Competition Secretary Frances for all their help. Kay and Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society) presented the prizes in the evening. Scores for the 4BBB competition were a little lower than other events this year, nevertheless the prizes were fiercely contested with 9 pairs scoring 35 points or more. In third place with 36 points ocb were Carole Loveday (Romford) & Sandra Goff (current Lady Captain Crondon Park), 2nd place went to Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Harriette McGinlay (Theydon Bois) with 37 points ocb. English Schools Golf Association NASUWT SOUTH EAST OF ENGLAND SCHOOLS’ REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WEST ESSEX GOLF CLUB - FRIDAY 2ND JUNE 2017
F
lashes of lightning, claps of thunder, a downpour and an hour’s suspension of play highlighted the South East of England Schools Championships. But it failed to dampen the desire of every youngster to qualify for the National Finals, especially the respective champions, Amy Taylor and Matthew Green. There was no hint of the weather problems to come when the Championships, sponsored by the NASUWT, got underway at West Essex Golf Club. The morning was idyllic with little wind and wall-to-wall sunshine. But after lunch, the clouds rolled in, the wind increased and play became a lot more tricky and as the outline of London gradually disappeared from the horizon, the young golfers knew there could be trouble ahead. Thalia Kirby led the girls’ event at lunch with an opening one-under-par 71, one ahead of Taylor and Sophie Faulkner. But only Taylor and Holly Haslam matched the par of 72 in the prolonged afternoon session with Taylor coming home to claim the title by one from Kirby. “This is a confidence booster for the rest of my season,” she said. “I love playing the schools. They are fun events because we play as individuals and as a team. And, of course, we support each other.” Ben Humphrey from Shenfield School, led the boys’ morning round with a superb 69, going into lunch with a two shot lead from Green, Owen Benson from the Oaklands College and Thorpe House School pupil Carl Banner. But the roles were reversed in the afternoon with 16-year-old Green rolling in three birdies in his 69 for 140, two under par, winning by five shots as his rivals fell away. The two-handicapper from Great Dunmow won the Hertfordshire under 16 title last year and the under 15 crown the previous year when he also won the Gog Magog Junior Open.
“I played very solidly, I drove and chipped well and holed a lot of five foot putts,” he said. “I eagled the first hole this morning but I lost a little momentum after the delay. When we resumed on the second hole this afternoon I had a difficult upand-down which I managed to secure. “This win really starts my golf year. It allows me to enter the Carris Trophy (the England under-18 Championship) and when I finish school I am aiming to go to the United States on a golf scholarship,” he added. In the Team events, Norfolk completed a hat trick of girls titles with 298, six better than Essex and Buckinghamshire, Essex retained the boys title by 14 strokes from Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Leading scores: Girls (par 72): 144 A Taylor (Norfolk) 72 72; 145 T Kirby (Buckinghamshire) 71 74; 147 H Haslam (Essex) 75 72; 151 S Faulkner (Hertfordshire) 72 79; 155 E Hume (Hertfordshire) 77 78; 156 C Gibbs (Norfolk) 80 76; 157 A Jeliazkova (Essex) 80 77; 158 R Earl (Essex) 79 79; 159 A Curtis (Buckinghamshire) 81 78, K Yates (Essex) 81 78, E Brown (Norfolk) 78 81; 160 M Dennis (Bedfordshire) 80 80 Boys (par 71): 140 M Green (Essex) 71 69; 145 J McLaughlin (Cambridgeshire) 73 72, C Banner (Buckinghamshire) 71 74; 146 H Moncur (Essex) 72 74, B Humphrey (Essex) 69 77; 147 G Fricker (Suffolk) 76 71, R Holden (Bedfordshire) 75 72; 148 O Rust (Cambridgeshire) 76 72, C James (Essex) 75 73, G Albone (Hertfordshire) 75 73, J Emery (Norwich) 74 74; 150 L Baynham (Bedfordshire) 76 74,W Bates (Norfolk) 75 75 Teams Girls: 1. his year the Girls’ Championship was hosted by Langdon Hills Golf Club and our sincere thanks go to Lynda Cartwright and her staff, also the club Junior Organiser, June Morgan, who were so very helpful and made the day run smoothly. The course was in excellent condition and our thanks also to the green keeping staff for their hard work. There were 15 entries for the 36 hole Medal and 7 girls with handicaps 30+ playing the 18 hole stableford. The numbers were down this year due to the fact there were many of the low handicap girls in the middle of their exams and were busy revising. Lombard Success for Rivers
S
arah Bennett PGA Fellow Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers and her amateur partner Cherry Clarke qualified for the finals of the WPGA Lombard Trophy to be held in Portugal Vila Sol 19th-23rd September. The event is in it’s second year with the Regional finals held at Camberley Heath where Sarah and Cherry played better ball medal producing a score of -7 with the winners
recording one shot better at -8. The pair bogeyed the first two holes in driving rain but then covered the next 7 holes in -6 which set the pair up for a -3 par back 9 taking the 3rd qualifying spot. We “dovetailed” perfectly said Sarah who armed with new equipment and wedges used for the first time, the wrapper being removed the previous day, also playing her first 18 holes in nearly 8 months. This has been a key event for me as there have been a number of reasons which has spurred me on to play a little more, if the body will allow! It was a real pleasure to play with Cherry in this event and we did not stop talking and laughing all the way round” As a member of the WPGA committee it is vital we try to encourage the participation and connection between our growing number of female coaches and members, we appreciate the support from Lombard in conjunction with Coca Cola to assist with the vision. The final promises to be a fantastic showcase whatever the final result.
New Captain at Brentwood Golf Club
B
rentwood Golf Club held their Captains Day on Saturday 22nd July. New Club Captain Andy Massey had a fabulous day in which 132 members played in a hectic ‘Shotgun’ start, Golf was followed by a ‘Hog Roast’ and much alcohol was consumed. Andy Massey only went and the won the individual competition, Andy getting 46 points of his 9 handicap,YES 46 points! And his team of (brother) David Massey, Gary McGrath and
his son Jake McGrath scooped the team prize. The day raised £1,480 for Andy’s chosen Charity Saint Francis Hospice. Andy is a lifelong (suffering) West Ham United supporter, hence the balloons and was joined on the day by ex-West Ham, Newcastle United and England football legend Rob Lee A massive thank you to Sue Phillips and her staff who worked tirelessly on such a long day. - 46 -

! ! !
he second match of the 2017 season for the Essex Colts was the home fixture against Herts played on Sunday 2nd July at Abridge Golf Club. The away match had been drawn 6-6 only two weeks ago. The course was in excellent condition and the Club made everyone feel most welcome. The full team: Brandon Meads (Capt), Jack Brown and Shay McQueen (Chelmsford). Zach Chegwidden & Cassidy Steffens (Orsett). Jordon Slater (Harwich & Dovercourt). Seniors County Team League Match
ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE Orsett Golf Club – Thursday 6th July
O
n a fine summers day Essex arrived at Orsett looking to beat Hertfordshire to keep them on course to win their league. In the event the result kept them in the running for the league title but it now depends on the results they achieve against the other two sides and also how well Hertfordshire do in their other two matches. Out one went Mark Lazarus who was taking on the best player in the Hertfordshire team and a English international. Mark in his time as an Essex Senior has returned some noteable victories but this was not to be another. 2 down after 9 he never recovered. We were hopeful that Ian Grant playing on his home course would provide a win but Ian never got going and the putting demons took their toll and he eventually lost 2 down with 1 hole remaining. The third game saw our England International (currently 5th in the national order of merit) he was comfortably up after 9 and ran out to win 4 up with 3 to play. Next followed two more Orsett players Mark Whiten and Steve Rooney. Mark secured a win on the 17th but Steve had to battle all the way. All square playing the last both Steve and his opponent went in the ditch off the tee but both played out but Steve managed to secure a win. Jeff Mathewson and Michael Partridge are becoming the reliable pair of our middle order and so it proved again. Jeff won 5 up with 4 to play and Michael 3 up with 2 holes to play. At this stage we were looking for half a point from our last 3 games to win the match Kevin Saunders was playing the 18th all square he took an iron off the tee for safety but still managed to find to ditch, his opponent was nicely on the green for 2 and two putted !$ ?6(&?">+? $>! #$= "! !" 2017 BOYS TEAM QUALIFIER Woodbridge Golf Club, Suffolk – Thursday 13 July 2017
T
he annual England Golf boys team qualifier was held this year on a hot, still summer’s day on the splendid Heath Course at Woodbridge Golf Club in Suffolk and on this rare occasion manager Stephen Golding was able to field just about his strongest team. The format is simple; each team of six players play 36 holes with the best five individual scores counting and the team with the lowest total score wins and goes forward to the county final in August. Having already played league matches ! against Hertfordshire and BB&O earlier in the season the Essex boys knew the quality of these opponents and the difficult task ahead of them. David Brooks the county’s head coach was on hand to take the boys out on their practice round and discuss course strategy and club selection, so the preparation could hardly have been better. Although there were eleven county teams competing for this one qualifying spot it quickly became clear that there were really only three teams in it, Hertfordshire, BB&O and Essex. It was therefore of little surprise that at the half way stage as the lunchtime scores arrived that BB&O were leading with 353 followed by Herts on 356 and Essex on 357 with the remaining counties falling some distance behind. As the afternoon unfolded Hertfordshire too became detached and it was apparent that the winners would be either BB&O or Essex. The initial advantage went to Essex as early starter Arron Edwards Hill finished with a Championship best score of 67 to go with his morning round of 69 against a par of 71 As the afternoon progressed it became apparent that the scores from the last grouping on either half of the draw would be crucial and none more so than that containing Tom Gregory of BB&O and Michael Gilbert who were playing together. From the 10th hole Michael stole the advantage over Tom and was three strokes up on him until their final hole which Tom birdied to Michael’s par, but even then the final outcome was unknown. With the final scores in and the numbers crunched the result produced was a narrow win by one stroke for BB&O leaving the Essex boys to ponder on what might have been. Despite much gnashing of teeth no autopsy was necessary as all the team including travelling reserve Callum Newton put everything they could into winning this one. A big plus for the team was Arron Edwards Hill taking the individual prize winning by one stroke from England international Danny Daniels and with the upcoming home internationals Arron must surely be in the frame for an England call-up. Finally our thanks go to Martin McDermott, Michael Rees, Bob Blowers and the rest of the England Golf championship committee for putting this event together in splendid style and special thanks to Woodbridge Golf Club and its members for the use of their excellent golf facility. - 49 -

U18 Inter Counties League
ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE v MIDDLESEX Knebworth Golf Club – Sunday 9th July 2017
A
nother gloriously sunny day greeted the players for the second Inter Counties Match of the season at the challenging Knebworth course. There was just a slight breeze, but the tree lined course had plenty of changes in elevation for players to deal with not to mention greens that were a little on the sluggish side. All three counties had notable absentees and unlike our earlier encounter with Hertfordshire in the Cheshunt Salver their England contingent were absent on other duties, nevertheless they were still able to field a side packed with talent. Josh Read led off for Essex and continued his winning run by soundly beating Hertfordshire’s big hitter Jon Hopkins 4 & 3, but Ben Davies his slightly built Middlesex opponent proved more troublesome. Having been one down after 15 holes Josh pulled it back with a birdie at sixteen. Then at the par 5 17th, despite having a 15ft eagle putt contrived to halve the hole with a par. Fortunately his birdie on the last hole was enough to give him the win. Cai James who was driving long and straight was the other Essex man to win both points, whilst Callum Newton continued his unbeaten run by holing a six foot putt against his Hertfordshire opponent on the final green to grab a half point. When the team scores were finally added up Essex beat Middlesex 6½ -1½ but disappointingly lost to Hertfordshire 5̕½-2½, so there will be all to play for when they meet up with BB&O and Hertfordshire on 13th August at Chigwell GC. With all three teams potentially fielding England international players it should make an interesting afternoon’s golf for spectators. As always our thanks go to our Hertfordshire GU and Josh Reed. Knebworth Golf Club for providing a splendid golfing facility on which to play this match. STEPHEN GOLDING Team Manager - 50 -

EAST BERKSHIRE STAG East Berkshire Golf Club – Wednesday 21st June 2017
S
ix players from Essex played in this annual event at East Berkshire Golf Club. Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), George Leversuch (Wanstead), Will Percival and Zach Chegwidden (Orsett), George Gennings (Thorndon Park) and Callum Pipe (Braintree) A 36 hole individual stroke play competition plus a three man team trophy. First played in 1976 and won then by Sandy Lyle. Essex has had a couple of winners in the last few years and hopes were high after a very good practice round on Tuesday. The June 2017 heat wave continued. The course, although somewhat dry, was in beautiful condition. With a field of 74 players the leading score in the morning was from George Gennings. 65 – 3 shots clear of the field. Hopes were high but regrettably the heat got to many in the afternoon, including George. The eventual winner was home player Ben Platt 70.67.137. The best three scores from Essex were George Gennings & Brandon 142 and Will 144. With six players Essex had two teams in the team event but lost out to BB&O who had a total team score of 432 to Essex’s best of 438. Teams have to be declared before start of play – unfortunately our 3 best scores were not all in the same team. Typical case of “if only”. However, congratulations to all the Essex players who were a credit to our County. DAVE EDWARDS Colts Manager - 51 -

ENGLAND GOLF SENIORS QUALIFIER Fulwell Golf Club
E
ngland Golf Seniors Qualifier Individual (better known as the 6 man team) was held this year at Fulwell Golf Club in Middlesex just down the road from Twickenham Stadium. Our hopes were high because on our previous visit to the course in 2015 we had defeated Middlesex Seniors by 9 ½ to ½. However we were up against some stiff opposition from BB&O, Kent and Sussex. Our first man out was Chris Aukett who seemed to be going very well and in fact ended his day on a very solid 72 (1 over par), next was our international Mark Stones of whom we were expecting great things but this was not to be his day and he finished in 78. Then came County Champion Steve Rooney with a disappointing 80 (which was the dropped score for the first round) Then came Michael Partridge with a 77 and Jeff Matthewson 79. We were then waiting on our final man Ian Grant but his score of 79 left the team in 3rd place overnight. The following day Wednesday dawned with some overnight rain and a threat of more in the air. The rain never materialised and neither did our hopes of qualifying for the final at Berwick upon Tweed. Chris Aukett could not find the touch of the previous day but still recorded 75 to finish 7th overall. Mark Stones had a remarkable day having 18 straight pars to finish on 71 and an overall 9th finish. Our remaining players Steve Rooney 78, Jeff Mattewson 79, Michael Partridge 82 and Ian Grant 83 left us in 6th place overall. The winners were Sussex who’s team included the winner of the individual competition Colin Jones with a magnificent 69 67 (6 under par). Team: Mark Stones - Boyce Hill, Chris Aukett – Boyce Hill, Ian Grant – Orsett, Steve Rooney – Orsett, Michael Partridge – Thorndon Park, Jeff Mathewson - Bentley.

HERTS v ESSEX Hadley Wood Golf Club – Sunday 23rd July 2017
T
he second League match of the year saw the Essex County Team travel to the superb venue of Hadley Wood Golf Club to take on current League leaders Hertfordshire. After a close fought away win against Middlesex and a home win against Bedfordshire, Herts were in top spot with a maximum 4 points, whilst Essex, having played out a draw at BB&O needed to win this match to stand any chance of winning the league. Hot off a fantastic win in the Eastern Counties Foursomes at Seacroft some 6 weeks earlier the Essex side were in confident mood and keeping the same pairings in the foursomes charged out of the blocks. After 7 holes Essex were up in 3 and all square in one albeit never more than the odd hole ahead. Herts were not in the mood for lying down however and by the 12th hole had turned things around and were themselves

ahead in 3 and all square in one. With some cracking shot making and excellent putting on very slick and tricky greens, Essex fought back to just edge the morning session by the odd point. The afternoon singles started with Herts firing on all cylinders. After 7 holes they were up in 5, down in 2 and all square in one. The only bright spark for Essex at that point was Jamie Richards who, after 6 holes, was 5 under par and 5 up, the Spider putter was on fire! By the 12th hole things were slightly better with Essex now up in 2 games and all square in 3 and this gradual pressure from the Essex side began to tell. The first point of the afternoon went to Mike Gilbert, coming back from 1 down after 15 to win 2 up, closely followed by Jamie Richards 3 and 1 win. County Captain Jay Beisser showing grit to cling on to a one hole win. So, with the score now 5 ½ to 3 ½ Essex needed just the one point to clinch victory. With Curtis Knipes and Callum Pipe succumbing to their opponents, it was left to Will Percival to secure victory with a solid 3 & 2 victory over the very useful Ben Harman. With further wins by Andy May over Herts number one Luke Colgate, and Ali Plumb beating Tony Wilkins on the 18th , Essex ran out overall winners by the flattering score of 8 ½ to 3 ½ . County Match
ESSEX v MIDDLESEX Chelmsford Golf Club – Sunday 23rd July 2017
E
ssex County Team’s 3rd match of the campaign saw our first Home fixture against Middlesex at Chelmsford Golf Club on cloudy day with a chill in the air. The Chelmsford course looked in immaculate condition as always and the Essex side were raring to go in their quest to top the League for the first time this season. After a good start with a draw at Frilford Heath and a great win at Hadley Wood, Essex were lying second behind leaders Hertfordshire who had played a game more. So a win today would ensure top spot, however in order to stay ahead of BB&O who also had 3 points, it was vital to win, and by as large a margin as possible as ‘goal difference’ comes into play in the event of a tie. Essex started at a sprint and after 8 holes of the morning foursomes all 4 matches were comfortably in our favour. So a morning whitewash was a distinct possibility. Three of these were turned into points for Essex, but a spirited fight back by the Middx top pairing of James Ellis and Tommy King against Andy May and Michael Gilbert saw them win the last 3 holes to turn a 2 hole deficit into an unlikely win. Score at lunch three one to the home side. The afternoon singles set off in darkening skies and after an hour or so play had to be suspended due to torrential rain and rumbles of thunder. With the greens rapidly becoming unplayable shelter was taken and doubt as to whether the match would get finished. However in the true tradition of English weather the storm passed and the quality of the Chelmsford greens drainage became apparent as within a very short time all the waterlogged greens cleared and play resumed. The morning trend of dominance by the Essex players continued into the afternoon with the home side showing how to putt on the tricky but superb Chelmsford greens. After another ding dong battle, Tommy King took the first point of the afternoon for Middlesex against Michael Gilbert but then the Essex victories came thick and fast. By late afternoon with Essex six one up in the singles only Ali Plumb was left out on the course. After 10 holes, his young opponent had opened up a 4 hole lead. Ali typifying the Essex spirit, fought back to level the match on the 15th and was looking to ensure another Essex point when the heavens opened and again flooded the greens, making the completion of JAMES ELLIS 1 1 TOMMY KING ANDY MAY the game impossible and each player agreed on an honourable hole DEN ERT MICHAEL GILB CONNOR MAD half. Sarah’s Saturday Golf Session with a Difference! S
arah Bennett PGA Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Club introduced The Open to 9 young golfers on the penultimate day of the big Event at Royal Birkdale. The free day organised by Sarah and driven by HSBC with the focal point of bringing families together was certainly achieved with friendly banter and plenty of smiles from the youngsters. There were a variety of challenges set up and delivered by Sarah with various technical elements inter dispersed during the hour aimed at maintaining interest and enjoyable learning. The 10 step chip challenge was the theme of the day with one youngster volunteered the previous week to make the trophy..little did I know it was a replica of the Claret jug and would be on such a grand scale, the boat he made too was outstanding which sailed in the paddling pool! The parents had a go too with some close attempts but with one ball permitted it was always a tough challenge. One parent “Thank you Sarah for a fantastic session, the pictures are ace, Max thoroughly enjoyed himself and is very proud of his shirt” with another reiterating both father and son had
an amazing afternoon. “I thoroughly enjoy coaching children, having developed interest over the past 7 years through schools, club and County continue to upskill via a variety of channels. The four week Saturday coaching sessions I run at Three Rivers Golf Club are open to children between 5-10 yrs of age with no monthly commitment which suites the busy life styles of many. Coaching young players is ever evolving and I feel it is vital to introduce new material and concepts to group programmes. The “old style” of coaching hitting balls in a line in my view is a thing of the past and can promote lack of sustained learning and boredom potentially leading to drop out at an early age. I am sure the HSBC Hour Challenge was a huge success and with the additional activities run by the Golf Foundation delivered by the PGA Professionals will continue to grow the interest of golf for the years to come. Sarah can be contacted about her junior coaching via her website www.sarahbennettgolf.co.uk or Email: sarahbennettgolf@gmail.com

What Can We Learn From The Open 2017?
C
ongratulations to Jordan Spieth, picking up his 3rd Major, The Open, at Royal Birkdale, to go alongside his Masters and US Open victories. As anyone who watched the coverage of Sunday’s final round, you couldn’t have failed to have been impressed with the quality of the golf on offer. Many times with golf, perhaps playing in a club competition or monthly medal, we look back at our round and wish for a different result… If only that putt had dropped for a par, if only my ball wasn’t 2 inches Out of Bounds, etc. etc. Well as we know, in the great game of golf, all of that becomes irrelevant! It’s what you finally shoot, after all 18 holes have been played, (or 72 holes if you happen to find yourself in The Open)! For us here at The Mind Zone, there were two significant moments that demonstrate fantastically well how vitally important it is to have the right thoughts (and to maintain those thoughts) when playing golf. Now clearly, you will think we are referring to Jordan Spieth on the 13th hole during the final round and of course we are… but more of that later! Cast your mind back to the opening round, Rory McIlroy, former Open Champion, bogey’s the first hole. No real damage you may think, but when you are standing on the tee of the 7th, having bogeyed 5 of the first 6 holes, let’s be honest… it’s not the ideal start! The mind starts racing and panic can set in, knowing, to just make the cut (never mind actually challenging for the title) is a big ask. Yet McIlroy went on to have four birdies on his back nine and put himself back in contention. So what happened? Well it has been well documented from Rory himself, that his caddy, JP Fitzgerald, played a massive part in the change in circumstances. JP spoke to Rory and reminded him exactly who he was! ‘You’re Rory McIlroy, you’ve won this thing before.. just relax and enjoy the game, one shot at a time’. Now there will inevitably be some doubters out there, but consider this; McIlroy’s swing didn’t miraculously just get better? He didn’t clear off to have a sneaky 10 minutes on the range! When you
stand on the tee next time at your club, think back to a time when you played that hole really well (and if it’s a new course, then you have no poor history, so what is stopping you making it a great hole?), relax and just enjoy the game. Is that so hard to do? Back to Spieth now, on the 13th! With fellow American, Matt Kuchar breathing down Spieth’s neck, alongside the adrenaline and nerves that accompany most golfers going into the final round of a major, in the lead, Spieth didn’t have the best of starts… in fact, at the turn, there was nothing in it, though both players had put some distance between themselves and the rest of the field. Out of the blue, Jordan Spieth fires a wild shot 120 YARDS wide of the target! With Kuchar safely on the fairway (and subsequently on the green before Spieth had even taken his ‘unplayable’ drop and then third shot), it certainly crossed his mind that this could have been the turning point where he lost The Open! I’m sure thoughts of the 2016 Masters came racing back, momentarily, to. As you’ll remember, he took his third shot from the practice field, with a six iron and came up short of the green (Even his caddy said ‘We guessed the yardage from the practise field)! A quite sublime chip left a tester for bogey and with Kuchar looking to Birdie the hole, this could have represented a 2 or even 3 shot swing. Kuchar missed, Spieth holed out… Kuchar takes a one shot lead to the 14th! This is where it is so, so important to have a calm mind. Jordan seemed to find a new gear, not chasing the game, but playing each shot in turn, with a birdie on the 14th, an eagle on the 15th and two more birdies on the 16th & 17th, he played the last five holes, five under par! Matt Kuchar certainly played a great round of golf, but you have to admire Spieth’s tenacity and sheer brilliance over those closing holes. Do you want to increase your mental strength, finding the ability to obtain (and remain with) a calm mind whilst playing? Then simply contact us, for details of the next Mind Zone Masterclass. Why not hold a Mind Zone evening at your club, for your members and guests or perhaps your society? Simply contact us for more details. Enjoy your golf! www.themind-zone.com

The face insert pairs a stainless steel Microhinge plate co-moulded into a Thermoplastic Elastomer Feel Layer, enabling the tiny hinges on the hitting surface to lift the ball into a better roll at impact. The technology makes the putter face more flexible, meaning all golfers will see increased top-spin and roll to their putts, even with a less-than-perfect putting stroke. Dr. Alan Hocknell, Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Callaway Golf, said: “The head colour has been generating a lot of interest on Tour this season, and a number of our players asked to test prototypes combining our Microhinge Insert Technology with a red finish. We know that if the best players like something and putt well with it, real golfers are definitely going to like it, too.” Odyssey O-Works Red Putters feature a variety of Tour proven shapes – including the iconic 2-Ball, #7, R-Line,V-Line Fang – and introduces an innovative new #7S model.
This short slant neck version of the #7, one of the most prolific, tournament-winning putters of all time, provides more toe hang, which has become a popular setup for professionals. For over 20 years, Odyssey has set the standard for industry-leading innovations in golf. Odyssey remains the #1 Putter across the major worldwide Tours and continues to dominate with the most worldwide putter wins of any brand this year. Odyssey O-Works Red Putters will be in store from September 1, 2017. www.odysseygolf.com
‘Drift Away’ features a cool seafoam green as the lead colour, creating a modern and contemporary collection. ‘Purple Haze’ offers a sophisticated palette, combining shades of rich plum with cool celestial blue and navy, promoting a versatile collection. Incorporating Sensor Cool technology, the direction of the collection’s polo shirts is showcased by the Harper, Quinn and Theodore. These designs combine moisture movement performance, quick drying, stretch and crease- resistant properties, with a tailored fit and attention to detail throughout. This results in a range of comfortable, stylish and performance driven designs for the golfer, both on and off the course. Complementing the new Spring/Summer collection is the introduction of Tekfit® waistband technology to the Bradley trouser/short and Hendrick short. This cutting-edge innovation provides up to two inches of additional waistband stretch for superior comfort, flexibility and freedom of movement. The Knowles sweater is engineered from soft-touch merino and showcases a heather coloured block fleck design. Its technical benefits are highlighted by natural thermal and moisture moving properties. A new innovative outerwear design is the Delta jacket. Engineered for optimum performance in windy conditions, this exceptionally lightweight, windproof garment also offers superior water resistance. Advanced stretch fabrics and additional venting, for enhanced breathability, make this an essential, year-round jacket. www.ping.com

Oscar Jacobson’s SS18 Collection Offers On-Course Performance with High Street Style

ith 114 years of tailoring experience, Swedish brand Oscar Jacobson has been kitting out European Tour golfers for over four decades. Combining men’s fashion and cutting-edge technologies, Oscar Jacobson’s Spring/Summer 2018 range features performance-enhancing garments which look as good on the High Street as they perform on the golf course. The 21st-century golfer is looking for stylish apparel that works equally well on and off the golf course, and Oscar Jacobson’s rich heritage in fashion tailoring, dating all the way back to 1903, ensures that performance and style run deep in the brand’s DNA. The new Spring/Summer 2018 collection from OJ Sport – presented in Sky/Coral, Naturals and Electric colour themes – draws heavily on the brand’s expertise in fashion tailoring, and its unparalleled knowledge of technical golf apparel, to deliver a greater number of products than ever before that will not only perform how the golfer wants on the fairways, but also look completely at home on the High Street. Eco focus No company should be shying away from its environmental responsibilities in the 21st century. As a Swedish brand, Oscar Jacobson takes its Eco duties very seriously and is fully committed to continually seeking out more environmentally friendly ways to produce its striking apparel collections. For Spring/Summer 2018, this quest has led to the use of a ground-breaking Bamboo charcoal fibre in the technical polo shirt, Chap, knitted from a polyester/elastane mix for added stretch and fit. Bamboo charcoal fibre is mixed in with the yarn to create a fabric that offers the same feel and durability as many synthetic fabrics, but is kinder on the environment thanks to nanotechnology. This process allows the physical and biological properties of a material to be modified by engineering, synthesising and adding elements to develop the next generation of improved fabrics and materials. OJ Sport’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection will perfectly prepare any golfer to meet the demands of peak-season golf with an ideal blend of performance, function and style. More so than ever before, the garments deliver versatility and the potential for cross-over, looking as stylish off the golf course as they do on it. www.oscarjacobson.com

otocaddy, the top-selling trolley brand, has upgraded its free GPS app in preparation for the upcoming launch of the revolutionary S5 CONNECT electric trolley this week. Introduced at the start of the year, the Motocaddy GPS App has already reached 25,000 downloads and can be synced with the world’s first ‘Smart Cart’ or used as a stand-alone, fully-featured mobile GPS device on any compatible smartphone. In addition to numerous other upgrades, the latest version of the App features a new ‘Pairing Mode’ that allows golfers to sync the app to the S5 CONNECT via Bluetooth™ connection. The trolley’s digital display can then be used in place of a conventional GPS to provide golfers with front, middle and back distances to the green (in yards or metres), along with the par of the hole, clock and round timer. In addition, the new ‘Push Notification’ option enables golfers to receive and display notifications on the trolley handle, alerting them to a missed call, text message, email or range of app alerts, including WhatsApp & Facebook. Notifications can be pre-set through the app to receive as many or as little as the golfer requires out on the course. The smartphone remains connected, even when securely placed in a golf bag pocket or being charged using the trolley’s patented USB charging port, while the app provides details of 36,000 courses worldwide. The app has also been developed to offer ‘Over The Air’ (OTA) updates to the trolley, allowing the S5 CONNECT display screen to be seamlessly updated with exciting new features and upgrades as soon as they become available. Along with the new updates, the Motocaddy GPS App also includes shot planning control that shows the distance to any point on each hole; measurement of the distance achieved by any shot; local course search and automatic hole advancement; a round timer to assist with pace-of-play; detailed greenside information and communication in five different languages (English, French, German, Spanish & Swedish). The Motocaddy GPS App is available free on iOS and Android from the Apple App Store and on Google Play now. www.motocaddy.com
