COLCHESTER C L U B

W

ell June was not quite the month we expected (although we still had a great month), with rain at a very high level for the time of year, England football, no comment and a departing of ways with our friends in Europe!

S E L E C T O R

However Dustin achieves a major at last but not without a little bit of controversy (not of his making in my opinion!). His big problem I think he just needs to hit his driver a bit longer to really move on!! And now for the big one, The British Open at Royal Troon. Looks like a very open contest with the top 3 in the world not totally firing and the likes of Johnson and Stenson looking good.

n At last an accurate launch monitor that can show you exactly how your current clubs perform against the new technology. n Clubs from Callaway, Cobra, Lynx, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, Srixon and Wilson can be compared to find the most suitable ones for you. n Whether your looking for more length, greater accuracy, higher launch, shaft suitability for your swing or filling those missing wedge gaps, Skytrak and the team at Nevada Bobs Colchester can help. n All the information is projected on a 42 inch TV screen so you can see exactly what is happening in real time and 3D! n Suitable for Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges (right and left handed).

3 offers this month. One for clothing which is just on for the days of the open and 1 great club offer and an electric trolley offer with free bag. The club offer has great value as it comes with our free custom fit service on our very accurate Skytrak system. Good luck to everyone at the open and let's hope for a British winner.

It’s All Change at the Top in Essex Golf I

t’s all change at the top in Essex golf as Roger Attrill steps down after six years as chairman of the County Development Group. He has handed over to Alan Walker, the owner of the award-winning Garon Park complex in Southend and a PGA Master professional. Attrill, who was previously the secretary at Frinton Golf Club, has overseen many changes and development during his Alan Walker (left) thanks time in office, working Roger Attrill for his closely with representatives contribution to Essex golf. of the county union and association, the PGA, Golf Foundation and Active Essex. Highlights of the past six years include the introduction of 3200 people to golf coaching courses through Get into golf and Swing into Swing; and the successful nomination of three England Golf award winners. Garon Park was the 2013 GolfMark Club of the Year; Tom Hide and Scott Rusbridge of Coastal Golf won the 2014 Participation Award; and Jan Tallentire of Warley Park won the 2015 Participation Award. Stoke by Nayland were runners-up in the 2010 GolfMark Club of the Year. Attrill’s achievements also included creating and chairing the first Essex Development Forum, bringing clubs together to talk seriously about ‘Growing Golf ’. Get into Golf was subsequently launched in the county that summer.

He commented: “The Development Group is now firmly established and recognised as the organisation responsible for the growth of the game of golf in Essex. Our initiatives are producing positive results and showing more and more people are enjoying the game. “I am delighted to be handing over to Alan Walker, who will bring considerable knowledge and experience to the Development Group, as a PGA Master Professional and a businessman in the golf industry.” Alan Walker said: “Golf is a sport that can be played and enjoyed at all levels and by all age groups. The Essex Golf Development Group is there to actively assist golf clubs with the creation of new golfers, increasing the participation of golf and retaining those golfers already playing. Together with our County Development Officer, Helen Tarttelin, and our committee representatives we look forward to increasing the numbers of golfers in our county.” Web: www.englandgolf.org Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/EnglandGolf Facebook: www.facebook.com/EnglandGolf

Team East England Double

A

Ellie said on her victory “I was really pleased with the win having won the Norfolk ladies Championship it was good to play against other girls from the Counties. I struggled in the practice round but stayed late to work on my game which paid off. I was delighted with my chipping and putting with my highlight of the second round an eagle on the 18th hole”. Ryan attributed his success to his long game and putting in particular his “footage” of putts holed during the event. He drew on the numerous putting drills provided during the sessions, holing putts he needed at the right time.” This is the biggest event I have won and it has given me great confidence to take into other Tournaments this season. I have worked hard on my full swing and putting over the winter months which is now paying off ” If you would like to apply for the U18 England Coaching Programme please complete an entry form which can be obtained via the England Golf website or contacting the Essex County Offices or Essex Ladies County Association. If you have any questions about the programme please contact Sarah Bennett England Golf East Region Head Coach Email: SarahBennettGolf@GMail.com

delighted Ellie Brown and Ryan Tattan both members of Sarah Bennett’s England Golf East Regional squad gained a recent double with each player victorious in the recent SE of England Schools Event. Ryan, who is a member of the U18 Essex county boys squad with Ellie representing Norfolk County Ladies who is fresh from her first victory in the Norfolk County Championship. “Ellie and Ryan are entering their second year in my England Golf East Regional Squad have worked extremely hard within the sessions covering a range of elements such as psychology, fitness, effective practice, short game skills and many other areas such as media interviews to name just a few. All sessions are based and designed to prepare the players for Major Events both in the amateur scene and beyond” We have a superb Team atmosphere and a double victory such as this really assists with the whole team spirit motivating everyone which is certainly happening. We are all very complimentary of performances both as a team and on an individual basis. The link with the player’s home Coach is an important part of the success of the programme so everyone is aware of the areas we are developing together.

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. SINGLE LENGTH IRONS

THE PROS & CONS M

aybe one of the big stories for equipment this year has been the introduction of single length irons to the professional game.Without doubt this has caused quite a stir and many golfers are looking to give these a try but this set make up does have it downsides. For those who have not seen this it is when all your irons are the same length i.e. your pitching wedge is as long as your 3 iron. Although this makes for a shorter long iron, which would be a more controllable club, it does make for a very long pitching wedge. Most sets are the length of a 7 iron throughout, bearing in mind this is quite often a golfers favourite club there becomes a certain amount of confidence there. With regards to the swing I can see the logic in this, your set up would be the same for all your irons so in theory there are less set up variables which can only be a good thing. All things being considered the golfer then relies on the loft of the club to hit the different distances. Single length irons are nothing new, they have been around for 30 years or so with several club making companies offering this option. So, as much at this makes sense it does call for a new set of irons. You simply cannot change your existing set to this specification for the following reasons: - 16 -

• The head weights would be wrong - in a normal set head weights get seven grams heavier per club from the longest to shortest iron, single length requires all the same • The lie angle would be completely wrong, your current heads would be set up for varying length shafts - not the same length throughout • Your shafts would not all be the same - i.e. you would currently have a specific shaft for each club, not the same shaft for all clubs Hopefully you can see from the above that altering your current equipment ruins it. How successful this idea becomes will depend on how many major brands decide to offer it - from their perspective it would be good as there would be less inventory to hold. I currently know of two companies either planning or launching sets - Tom Wishon & Cobra. So, for me this all makes sense but we will have to see what becomes of it.

Congo Rapids Lost World Adventure Golf Opens at Ufford Park

A

new Florida-style adventure golf course, Congo Rapids Lost World, is now open to the general public. Situated within the grounds of Ufford Park Hotel, Woodbridge, the 18-hole course offers outdoor fun in a mystical setting for adults and children of all ages. The 1800m² site is enclosed by secure fencing and is within easy reach of all the facilities at the Ufford Park Hotel. There is ample car parking onsite and all players are welcome to visit the hotel’s drinking and dining areas before or after playing - these are always open to non-members. Construction was managed by Adventure Golf experts Moore Adventure Ltd, which already operates a successful Adventure Golf course in Norwich, Norfolk called Congo Rapids, but this is the first of its kind to be opened in Suffolk. Adventure Golf is different from mini golf or crazy golf as it offers more physical interaction at some of the course holes, and it also offers a more dramatic setting for the players to enjoy. The journey starts on a self-propelled boat across the first of the water lagoons. Players visit the scene of a Congo Jungle plane crash as they play the first 5 holes – beware the cannibal cooking pot! They will encounter a tiger, a 4-

metre tall giraffe and many other animals. They pass through the abandoned temple and ride on a raft into the Lost World where they will be greeted by life-sized dinosaurs. A menacing T-Rex looks on as they play beside an erupting volcano and a 5-metre tall brachiosaurus waits for them just beyond by the 13th hole, before they head onwards through a giant dinosaur claw. Players can then return back through the Congo jungle into the African village and have the chance for some last photos to include a panoramic view of the course. They then exit through the jungle harbour to the sounds of jungle beat music. David Moore, of Moore Adventure Ltd said: “We’re looking forward to sharing this experience with individuals, groups of all ages and from all walks of life. We will be open 10am until 9pm (last admission 8pm), 7 days a week, and 364 days a year. Our hope is that players will come and enjoy it all year round.” For regular updates and news, follow on social media: Facebook: “Congo Rapids Lost World Adventure Golf ”, Twitter: @CongoRapids_LW or visit the Congo Rapids website www.congorapids.co.uk.

Swing Plane Simple and Vital C

onsistent direction is the role of the swing plane and clubface, although the biggest factor for the leading the direction of your golf ball is the clubface, whether it is pointing towards the left or right of your intended target. It is my opinion the clubface largely sympathises with the swing plane, so if we are able to keep the club on a balanced plane the clubface stability will improve. What is the plane, simply put? It is the angle that the club and shaft move around the body, if you look at the golf swing from the face on the angle the club appears to move around a circle. Now if you look at the swing from down the line, as Picture 1 portrays, the circle is more of a straight line moving diagonally from the heel of the golf club, through the right elbow and beyond. The longer you are able to keep the club on this plane the more consistent your directional control of the ball will be. Over the next few months, I am going to

1

2

encourage you to train yourself to keep the club on this plane, starting this month with the initial move from the ball. Picture 2 and 3 shows. My initial set up and take away from the ball from the face on view. The most important thing to notice is that there has been no hinging of the wrists at this point. Now take a look at the three pictures from down the target line, the first Picture 4 the wrists have rolled the clubface open, and you will notice the club head is now underneath the ideal plane, Picture 5 the wrists have hinged up during the first part of the swing and now the club head finds itself above the plane and finally Picture 6. My idea of no hinging of any kind in the first initial move from which the ball and the club moves straight onto the plane and the first link in the chain of events has been completed. Next issue what happens next.

Happy Golfing Gary

There is a Flat Area in the Golf Swing!

D

ue to the way our joints work and their sequence in the golf swing there is a flattening of the club head arc as it approaches the ball, THE CLUBHEAD ARC IS NOT A PERFECT ARC so some of the theories being peddled for hitting up on the ball are at best misguided and inaccurate.

Above are two images of Dustin Johnson one with an iron the other with a driver together with a measurement showing the shoulder angle as it relates to the ground at impact. You will notice they are different and whilst I can’t totally explain why in this brief article, it should give you food for thought and if like a lot of people I have helped over recent times you are trying to achieve this with some of the theories being peddled it might help you to understand why it’s not working,

The sequencing of the swing and the way the shoulders move mean top players angle of approach is shallower with their wood than their irons (Tour average -5 to approx -1.7 degrees, less than 6 degrees THATS LESS THAN ONE MINUTE ON YOUR WATCH OR CLOCK) whilst maintaining shaft lean giving optimal contact and launch, MOVING THE BALL FORWARD IS UNLIKELY TO HELP and in fact is more likely to hinder and harm your game.

All Smiles For Simon Tour star Khan marks 44th birthday with London Open win at West Essex

B

irthday boy Simon Khan gave himself another reason to celebrate after winning a play-off at the London Open @West Essex. The European Tour star, 44, fired a secondround 68 to finish at two-under alongside Chase Davis (Marriot Sprowston Manor), who recorded back-to-back scores of 69.

That meant ‘extra time’ and the pair set off down the par-4 17th where Davis drew a difficult lie for his approach. But Khan – the 2010 BMW PGA champion – was able to deliver a smooth 8-iron and ended up just needing to two-putt to triumph. Khan said: “It’s nice. Any win at any level – whether it’s this or a European Tour event – it’s the same feelings. It doesn’t change. “Pressures, and stuff like that, I probably felt as much in that play-off as I did winning at Wentworth or winning the Wales Open in a playoff with Paul Casey. The nerves...little bit of adrenalin – and it’s a good thing. You’ve got to learn how to deal with it. Playing well and winning at any level is tough.” It felt like a ‘home’ win as Khan – who did his PGA training at nearby Theydon Bois –only lives 10 minutes down the road in nearby Epping. He said: “I grew up playing at Chingford, literally down the road. I used to caddie up here – the Southern Pros – and used to come up and play whenever I could. I know it well from then. This is

my area, really. It was nice to have a few people walking round and seeing some old faces.” The last two seasons have seen Khan regularly sidelined with injury problems, especially with his left knee. But his victory at West Essex and a recent tied-15th finish in the BMW PGA Championship suggest he is returning to top form. He said: “The old feelings are coming back a little bit. These two rounds, I started driving the ball a lot better and my long stuff was a lot better. I can hopefully take that forward now into the rest of the year on Tour.” Fellow Essex professional – and former European Tour ace – Rob Coles (Maylands) finished tied third for the second successive Order of Merit. He and James Scade (Ingrebourne Links) were the only other two players to break par. Order of Merit leader Ian Campbell (Cheshunt Park) finished in a sixth spot, while James Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City) shot the tournament’s lowest round – a secondround 65, which lifted him into a share of seventh place alongside Jack Winer (Abridge). The London Open @ West Essex (PGA in England East, Order of Merit – West Essex Golf Club) leading scores: 138: S Khan (European Tour) 70 68 (won at first play-off hole); C Davis (Marriott Sprowston Manor Hotel) 69 69. 139: J Scade (Ingrebourne Links Golf Complex) 70 69; R Coles (Maylands G&CC) 67 72. 140: J Taverner (Hendon) 70 70. 141: I Campbell (Cheshunt Park) 71 70. 142: J Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City) 77 65; J Winer (Abridge) 67 75. 143: G Portelli (Verulam) 75 68; I Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister) 73 70; D Charlton (Dunstable Downs) 68 75. 144: T Phillips (Hadley Wood) 74 70; N Mitchell (Ipswich Golf Centre 74 70); D Griffiths (West Herts) 72 72; B Taylor (Brett Taylor Golf) 72 72; J Webber (Three Rivers) 70 74. 145: M Talbott (Thorpe Hall) 76 69; C Grant (Garon Park) 73 72; J Levermore (Channels) 71 74.

n an era when consumer events in a variety of sports come and go with the frequency of ‘Warholian’ celebrities, it’s refreshing to note the longevity of the London Golf Show. This year’s cavalcade of everything exciting in golf takes place at Glow, Bluewater, in Kent, from August 26-28, and is the 12th outing for the event – making it the UK’s longest-running consumer golf show. Since the spectacular launch in 2005 the show has been fine-tuned and become more focussed. Consequently, more big brands now attend the show, with Cobra Puma Golf, PING, TaylorMade, Yonex and Acushnet – parent company to Titleist, FootJoy, Pinnacle, Scotty Cameron and Vokey Wedges – already signed up to participate this year, with more expected to follow.

And, anybody who attends the show will be in profit almost immediately, with organisers currently putting in place a package worth more than £300 for every visitor. With myriad interactive stands – including nearest-the-pin, long-drive and long-putt contests; free PGA tuition; a massive indoor driving range featuring the majority of golf ’s best-known club brands; custom fitting; club testing; trick-shot displays; simulators; the latest golf gadgets; extensive retail; and the opportunity to win everything from a packet of tees to an exotic golf holiday, it is the ultimate day out for any golf enthusiast. The show will be hosted by Golf Juice presenter and YouTube sensation Mark Crossfield, whose golf coaching videos have received more

than 90 million views. Crossfield is one of social media’s most popular golfing figures, with almost 200,000 followers on YouTube, in excess of 34,000 Twitter devotees, and nearly 60,000 Facebook ‘likes’. His videos cover coaching, equipment and course reviews, all delivered in his individual style.

He will also give away six free lessons every day via his social media channels, with the lucky winners benefiting from a 30-minute lesson with Crossfield and his colleague ‘Coach’ Lockey, which will be recorded and shown on the former’s YouTube channel. Crossfield, who has been coaching for more than 20 years, will also host the daily ‘Innovations in Golf ’ section on stage, which focuses on gadgets and equipment new to the market. Crossfield said: “I love golf shows. I love the excitement and the buzz about them, and the enthusiasm for the sport that visitors generate. So I was delighted to be asked to work with the guys from the London Golf Show. “Because I love playing with gadgets, I’ll be presenting the ‘Innovations in Golf ’ section, which will highlight some of the great new ideas in the game – and also some of the wackiest. I can’t wait to get started.” Tickets to the London Golf Show – which takes place at Glow, Bluewater, in Kent, from August 26-28 – are free for accompanied under 16s, and also for lady golfers, until August 25. Tickets cost just £7.50 – until July 31 – for everybody else. Entry will cost £15 on the door.

T

he 1st of the Society of Essex Lady Captains Summer Meetings was held at Orsett Golf Club in early June. The day started a little dull but the sun soon came out and by that time the last groups were on their closing holes. There was a welcome breeze, the course was in a fabulous condition though if your ball strayed into the rough it was difficult to find and even more difficult to get out! The scores for the 4BBB competition were high with 7 out of the 35 pairs finishing on 41 points and above. Thanks to Orsett Golf Club for hosting this event and

making us most welcome. Thanks also to Lady Captain Sue Mason and her ladies for helping to make the event a great success but especially for providing the much appreciated on course drinks and biscuits. In 3rd place with 43 points were Carolyn Harris (Braintree) & Gillian Stallard (Brentwood), 2nd place with 45 points were Denise Hawkins (Benton Hall) & Sharon Glover (Brentwood). The winners of the Froom Cup with a fabulous score of 47 points were Vanessa Adams (The Warren) & Lin Fazzani (Channels).

Matt Stables is Head Coach of Four Shots Lower Academy at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre and A PGA Advanced Professional. Our Aim is to improve your scores by 4 shots over the next 12 months by giving you some simple proven techniques on all parts of your game to make a real difference to your game. We will make a plan suited to you to and your current ability to improve your game and increase your confidence and fun you have on the course. www.MattStablesGolf.com

Over the next few months, I will be expanding on the four shots lower idea by identifying 4 areas where you could save yourself one shot with some simple ideas ... SHOT 1- CHIP TO A LANDING SPOT The basic skill of chipping is to hit the ball to a landing spot, to let it run up to your target. If you were going to toss a ball at a target, you are looking to land your ball on a spot or a zone that you have judged depending upon the distance to the target, ground conditions plus the trajectory and speed that you intend to throw the ball. This is something we all do instinctively without much conscious thought. What we are trying to do with a chip shot is the same, except we are trying to do this with a club and ball! You may have seen footage of Rory Mcilroy on a TV show when he was young man, chipping balls into a washing machine, this is the same skill he was developing.

Practice landing your ball at a target. Either using a target circle, a range basket or even an umbrella. (Maybe not actually into the washing machine) On The Course imagine a small target, such as a coaster or a tee, where you want to land the ball and simply focus on hitting that target... If you can improve at hitting your landing spot it will help you save the first of your 4 shots.

HOW TO GET STARTED? BOOK A PLAYER ASSESSMENT FOR ÂŁ25 If you want to get started and go 4 four shots lower. I invite you to an initial 60-minute Player Assessment at a discounted rate of ÂŁ25. During the assessment, we will devise an improvement plan, tailored to suit your individual requirements. By the end of your assessment, you will understand which areas of your game you really need to improve. Call 01376 510222 to book yours.

Isolation VS Integration T

he big question in sport is do we isolate a muscle group or do we use integrated exercises that will work many muscles at once? I see many golfers in particular getting quite confused with “how they should train that will better their sport. In my opinion, integration with any sport is absolutely key. When talking about golf for example; when taking a shot, there is never just one muscle that brings you back into the back swing, there is never one muscle following through and never ever does 1 muscle work to stoke the ball. Therefore, I feel integrated exercise (those that work more than one muscle at once) will better suit a golfer. I commonly see golfers (especially young golfers) coming up into the gym, doing biceps curls, DB bench presses, pectoral flies and then going home. There is so much emphasis in golf to build muscle to become stronger and better at striking the ball and hitting it further, I do agree that building strength and muscle helps but most certainly not with just isolation to build specific

muscle groups like the exercises above. With any golfer I train, programme and condition I will always use integration exercises to make the body a solid, strong unit then once I feel happy the muscles are strong and strong together working as a team, isolation can come in. Try the following integrated exercises to start off your journey to getting strong and stable; n Squats n Wood Chops n Assisted or non assisted chin/pull ups These are just 3 examples, the list could be endless, seek a fitness professional that can help you develop integrated programmes to follow. - 40 -

FALDO WEDGE Ballards Gore Golf Club – Wednesday 1st June 2016 A very wet morning greeted the junior golfers representing their clubs as they competed for the Faldo Wedge, a prestigious event, in which teams of three players compete, on an aggregate scoring system using a stableford format. The morning groups had the worst of the weather by far, as it rained consistently for the majority of their rounds. At times it was torrential and it was feared that they may not finish due to the weather. The lead was taken by a fantastic score under the circumstances by Stock Brook Manor Golf Club, their team was Ben Carson (15),Teddy Papple (10) & James Clark (16).The team performed very well recording respectable scores of 36, 36 & 34 points respectively. This totalled 106 points and took the morning lead with the The Winners afternoon groups starting in much of the Burstead Golf Club. same weather. It did brighten up eventually, leaving the back nine in the afternoon for most groups to attack as the course was left playing a little easier by the softened conditions. However, despite good scores by Chelmsford of 105 points, together with last year’s champions, Playgolf Colchester also on 105 points, Stock Brook Manor juniors were sat on the top of the leaderboard. Ironically the last three groups consisted of three juniors from the Burstead Golf Club, Noah Andrews (5), Harry Merchant (8) & Sam Ainsbury (9), the three single figured handicappers were ‘on form’ as Harry returned with 38 points and Sam came in with 33 points. This meant that Noah had to return a score of 36 points to win the Faldo Wedge. When he returned having scored one of the highest scores of the day, his 39 points was a sickening blow to Stock Brook Manor, especially as they were close to winning it last year also. Regardless, Stock Brook Manor juniors should be extremely proud of their attempt and certainly faced the wettest part of the day to take runners up spot. The Burstead now qualify to play at Frilford Heath later in the year in the English Junior Club Tournament. We wish them all the very best for their campaign and we are sure thet they enjoy the experience of such a fantastic competition. We would also like to thank Ballards Gore Golf Club for hosting the event and for their hospitality and hard work in presenting the course in fantastic condition, despite the weather that has been dealt to us in the first half of the season. Runners Up – Stock Brook Manor Golf Club.

ESSEX AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Colne Valley Golf Club – 4th/5th June 2016 The 85th Amateur Championship was played at Colne Valley Golf Club on the 4th & 5th June 2016. This competition was first played in 1924 and the trophy was presented by WMJ Ralph, the Captain of Romford at that time. On the 4th of June, 77 players set out on their quest to win the 85th Essex Amateur Championship, which this year was held at Colne valley Golf Club. The course was in excellent condition with the greens running fast and some testing pin placements to challenge the best players in the county. George Gennings (Thorndon Park GC) and Lewis Kendall (Chelmsford GC) returned level par 70 in the morning round, but the early pace was set by Jamie Richards (Abridge GC) with a 2 under par score of 68. This was later matched by Bradley Bawden and Taylor Carter both from Rochford Hundred GC, but the lead at lunchtime was held by Alasdair Plumb (Chelmsford GC) with an excellent score of 67. In the afternoon round, the weather improved, as did much of the scoring. Ryan Tattan (Chelmsford GC) returned a level par 70 and Elliot Fullalove (Braintree GC) a 69 to move up the leaderboard. Mitchell Sarling (Boyce Hill GC) and Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford GC) also returned one under par 69’s in the afternoon with Michael moving into 3rd place after 36 holes with a total of 140, level par. Taylor Carter added a second round 70 to his earlier 68 to sit at 138, 2 under par, and second place. However, Alasdair Plumb produced an excellent second round score and equalled the amateur course record of 65 to set a 36 hole total of 132, eight under par. This gave him an overnight lead of 6 shots over the field. 45 players proceeded into the second day with the cut falling at a total of 156, 16 over par. On the 5th of June, the second day of the tournament the players went out in reverse order with the leaders starting on the 10th hole, the longest par 4 on the course. The overnight leader struggled to find his form on this back 9, dropping 6 shots to par whereas his playing partner, Mitchell Sarling, was 4 under par at the turn almost levelling the scores between the two. However, Alasdair Plumb rallied on the front nine to keep his score at 76 whereas Mitchell Sarling bogeyed 5 of the last 6 holes to finish 5 shots adrift with a morning score of 70. Another steady round of 70 by Taylor Carter put him only 3 shots behind the leader going into the afternoon, the final round of the tournament. With the pin positions being located on testing areas of the greens, these two scores of 70, and a similar score by Elliot Fullalove, were the best - 44 -

scores of the morning play. In the afternoon Alasdair was 1 under par at the turn with Mitchell dropping 2 shots and Taylor 4, giving him a good lead. After 13 holes the trio had all gained a shot against the course. However, in the last 5 holes, Alasdair dropped 4 shots to the course, with Mitchell gaining 1 and Taylor remaining level, thus giving the spectators a tight match to watch. This gave Alasdair a final total of 280, level par for the tournament, and a win of 3 shots over his 2 rivals with Mitchel pipping Taylor to second place on countback. Over this last round Alasdair holed some good long putts on the 8th, 11th, and 13th which were the key to his victory. He said afterwards that he was pleased to finish in the lead because in previous tournaments he had let good places after 3 rounds, drift away by indifferent last rounds. Mitchell & Taylor were left to rue missed putting opportunities during the last round but were pleased to have played well over the 4 rounds. Again on this last round the best scores were level par by Mitchell Sarling, Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) who came 5th, and Callum Hilton (The Warren GC) who finished 21st. ESPLEN TROPHY The Esplen Trophy was first presented by JJ Esplen OBE, who was the first President of the County Golf Union when it was founded in 1924. It is played in conjunction with the County Championship, and is awarded to the Club Team of two, who have the lowest aggregate gross score over the first two rounds of the Championship. The Winners will now go on to represent Essex in the English Champion Club Tournament later in the year. Alasdair Plumb & Michael Gilbert of Chelmsford Golf Club receiving the Esplen Trophy from Colne Valley Golf Club Captain Jerry Callow.

JUBILEE TROPHY

Mitchel Sarling of Boyce Hill Golf Club receiving the Jubilee Trophy from Essex Golf Union President Mike Hart

The Jubilee Trophy was presented to the Union in 1977 by Eddie Sadler and is awarded to the highest scoring player who is under 21 on the 1 January. This year Mitchel Sarling and Taylor Carter battled out over the 72 holes only to both finish on +3 for the tournament meaning the Jubilee Trophy was to be won by a countback decision. Mitchel’s final two rounds of level par were good enough to pip Taylor to the prize. A hard fought battle, but one that saw a friendly rivalry end with smiles and a joke during presentation.

Congratulations to all our competitors. Every player conducted themselves well and a great spirit was held throughout the entire competition. Our thanks obviously has to go to Colne Valley Golf Club and the staff, whose hospitality and course was exceptional, making it an easy event to run smoothly. - 45 -

Under 16 Match Report

E SS E X v S U S S E X & SU R RE Y Copthorne Golf Club, West Sussex – Sunday 5th June 2016 It was a glorious day for the county under 16s to make the trip to West Sussex and play golf on the attractive Copthorne course. On paper Surrey fielded a very strong side and with a couple of our leading lights absent on duty at the Essex Championship we would be hard pressed to come out ahead in this three way Inter Counties League match. As expected Surrey started strongly with their top order overcoming the challenge offered by both their Essex and Sussex counterparts, however the Essex middle and late order proved to be very much up for the contest with the later match-ups making good viewing for the spectators following these groups. Harvey Payne was never down and won both his matches at a canter and although Harrison Linney didn’t have the afternoon all his own way he still managed to come home with four points. Match of the day probably goes to a very determined Patrick Arundel who in a nip-and-tuck encounter sneaked ahead of his two opponents with a timely birdie on the 17th and with a half on the final hole he too secured his full quota of points. Great entertainment. This year Essex seems to be blessed with strength and depth in its under16 squad, so with the final league positions decided by cumulative points total we can approach our next encounter on Sunday 17 July at Purley Downs GC against Surrey and Kent with optimism. As always our thanks go to the host club Copthorne and the Sussex Golf Union for their hospitality and facilitating a very smoothly run day with a course in excellent condition. Our congratulations also go to Michael Gilbert and Curtis Knipes who carried the under 16 torch in the County Championship finishing 6th and 14th respectively. Stephen Golding Harvey Payne. Colts S.E.Region Triangular Matches 2016

BEDFORDSHIRE v HERTFORDSHIRE v ESSEX Harpenden Golf Club – Sunday 12th June

Sunday 12th June saw the second SE Region Triangular Match played at Harpenden Golf Club. Weather forecast bad, all players prepared, the ensuing showers were several but short. The course was in excellent condition, with subtle slopes on the greens that caught out many players. Unfortunately on the Sunday morning one of the Essex team members phoned in sick, meaning that the County had to forfeit one foursomes match to Beds and one to Herts. Hasty phone calls before morning play resulted in Jack Dyer agreeing to drive straight away to Harpenden. (Thanks to Jordan Wallace who was also endeavouring to make it if he could) The full team representing Essex therefore on the day was. Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), Taylor Carter and Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred), Zach Chegwidden and Will Percival (Orsett), Callum Pipe (Braintree), Dominic Piccolo and Josh Cardy (Channels). Brandon Meads, captain for the day, volunteered to stand down from the morning round to give us the three pairs. The results were as follows:- Callum Pike and Will Percival won both their matches 7&6 against Beds and 1up against Herts. Taylor Carter & Zach Chegwidden won 1up against Beds and lost 3&1 to Herts. Josh Cardy and Dominic Piccolo beat Beds 2&1 and lost to PTO

Herts on the 18th. With the forfeited matches the morning result was 3-1 up against Beds, 1-3 down against Herts. The afternoon Singles proved how resolute these young County players can be. They won both matches 5 - 3. Brandon Meads won 4&2 against Herts and 5&4 against Beds. Will Percival won 3&2 against Herts and 5&3 against Beds. Taylor Carter won 6&5 against Herts and was all square with Beds. Dom Piccolo won 3&1 against Herts and was all square with Beds. Callum Pipe was all square with Herts and 2 up against Beds. Zach Chegwidden was all square with Herts and won 3&2 against Beds. Josh Cardy & Jack Dyer both took Beds to the 18th green. Overall results for the day Essex v Herts 6 – 6 / Essex v Beds 8 - 4 This means Essex have maintained their narrow lead to take to the third and final match on September 4th at Benton Hall. Good Luck to the team. Afternoon singles: Bobby had an excellent win of 8&6 against Beds but unfortunately lost to Herts on the 18th. Scott and Zach each won both of their matches. Brandon won 5&4 against Beds but lost 3&2 to Herts. George, in his first County Match and as it happens, his first ever triangular match, beat Beds 1 up and was all square with Herts. Josh, in reverse to George, beat Herts 1 up and was all square with Beds. Singles results: Essex 5½ to 2½ up to Beds and 3½ to 4½ down to Herts. Overall Results: Essex v Beds 8 – 4. Essex v Herts 6½ - 5½. Herts v Beds 8 – 4. A narrow lead for Essex to take into the 2nd League Match in June. Congratulations to all players from all Counties and a ‘Thank You’ to Millbrook Golf Club for their excellent hospitality. ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Crondon Park Golf Club – 16/17th June 2016 Despite the best efforts of the British weather in the week preceding this event to ensure it could not take place the Greens staff at Crondon Park worked miracles to keep the course playable. However, when the eventual field of 51 players commenced their opening round on the Thursday they faced a tough test of golf. The early pace on day one was set by Bill Wreathall (Chelmsford) who in the first match out on the course returned a gross 76 against a par of 72, a nett 71. As the rest of the field returned to the Clubhouse it became clear that this had been an excellent round of golf in difficult conditions. At the end of the day Bill remained on top of the leader board, closely followed by Keith Davies (Chelmsford), who returned a 77, and Steve Rooney (Orsett) 78, along with Mark Lazarus (Romford) who also returned a 78. - 49 -

Fortunately, with no further rain falling overnight, we were able to start the second round on the Friday with a slightly drier course facing the players. Though the sunshine did not last too long, and by mid-afternoon the rain had returned to challenge the players once again. Kevin Petch (Colchester) followed up his first round 79 with an 80, to set the Clubhouse target of 159, and this was soon matched by Geoff King (West Essex) who scored an excellent 77 in his second round for a 159 total. Bill Wreathall could not match his first day standard scoring an 85, for a 161 total. It was left to the final match to conclude their second round for the 159 target to be beaten. Keith Davies followed up his first round 77 with a 79, giving a 156 Steven Rooney receiving the trophy from Mike Hart, EGU total, but this was only good enough for president. second place overall, as Steve Rooney shot the lowest score of the day, a superb 75 for a two round winning total of 153. In the handicap categories, the Over 55’s winner was Kevin Petch with a nett 149, followed by Steve Rooney on 151, on countback from Mark Hyam (Warley Park). The over 60’s winner was Peter Millett (Thorndon Park) with a nett 148, from Bill Wreathall on 151. For the over 65’s Colin Reynolds (Burnham on Crouch) took the honours with a two round nett total of 157, closely followed by Neil Sjoberg (Epping) on 159. Four handicapper Geoff King who finished third in the scratch competition won the over 70’s nett prize with 151, with Maurice Atkin (Three Rivers) following him home on 153. Our thanks to Crondon Park Secretary Paul Cranwell and his team for their strenuous efforts to help ensure the championship was played in spite of the Steven Rooney with Keith Davies the runner up with the 18th green behind inclement weather. them. - 50 -

Our first League Match of the season against Hertfordshire at a very well prepared Woolston Manor GC was to become an opportunity to test our strength in depth with two of the County Colts promoted into the County Team and both Will Percivall and Zach Chegwidden “stepped up to the plate with fine afternoon performances. Essex and Herts shared the morning foursomes 2 -2 when it had looked at one time like being 3-1 up at worst. However a four hole advantage slipped to a one hole deficit in the third match making all to play for in the afternoon singles. A solid top foursomes performance from Andy May & Jay Beisser being the highlight.

The afternoon session produced an early win for Essex in the top match where Jay Beisser was six under par with a 5&3 victory. The result then remained in the balance throughout a long afternoon with Todd Clememce bringing home our second match point followed by a number of late deficits being turned into victories which produced a result of 8.5 to 3.5 in a match that was far closer than the result suggests. Notable other performances were Ed Fullerlove producing a 1up victory being 1 down after 16, Andy May recovering from 5 down to secure a halved match and Will Percival who produced consecutive birdies to close out his opponent 1up. These were well supported by Zach Chegwidden and Jordan Wallace with battling performances to win 1up and 2&1 respectively. At the after proceedings, the Respective County Captains complemented Woolston Manor GC on the condition of the course and their hospitality and acknowledged the excellent spirit this match was played in. Essex now play Bedfordshire away at Millbrook GC in the next League Match on 3rd July. Essex were represented on this occasion by:Andy May (Boyce Hill GC), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club), Jordan Wallace (Abridge GC), Todd Clemence (Braintree GC), Ed Fullerlove(Braintree GC), Jamie Richards (Abridge GC), Will Percival(Orsett GC) & Zach Chegwidden(Orsett GC), Report by John Peters County Team Manager - 52 -

ESSEX COLTS v EAST BERKSHIRE STAG East Berkshire Golf Club – Wednesday 22nd June 2016

Six players from Essex played in this annual event at East Berkshire Golf Club. Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), George Leversuch (Wanstead), Will Percival and Zach Chegwidden (Orsett), Dominic Piccolo and Josh Cardy (Channels) This tournament was first played in 1976 and the winner of the trophy on that day was Sandy Lyle. A 36 hole individual stroke play competition plus a three-man team trophy. The course was in its usual beautiful condition although many players found the greens somewhat challenging. With a field of 72 players the lead score in the morning was 69. Will Percival was only one shot behind at 70 along with 2 others. Josh Cardy posted 71 and Zach Chegwidden 72. In the afternoon Will with 73 (143) finished just 2 short of the winning score of 141. There was a 4-way playoff with golfers from the following clubs: Sonning, Castle Royle, East Berks and Buckinghamshire. 2 Birdies against 2 Pars on the 1st hole left East Berks and Buckingham playing on until the 4th playoff hole with Rymer Smith from Buckingham being the eventual winner. With 6 players Essex had 2 teams in the team event but lost out to BB&O who had a total score of 425. Congratulations to all Essex players who represented our County. - 53 -

As I write this evening of Sunday 26th June, I follow a thrilling set of games hosted at Crondon Park seeing the last of Division A match conclusion with the away team of Notleys Golf Club needing a big win to go through to the play offs. Sadly it was not to be, despite a number of Notleys Captains’ bringing in some points (Kevin Whybrew, Adam Painter, current Club Captain Darren Liversidge, and myself), the Crondon team were victorious and progress to next round to play either Burnham on - 54 -

Crouch or Clacton Golf Club. And the wonderful thing about the Jubilee Cup, the losing captain writes on the score sheet: “Congratulations Crondon, good luck in the Quarters. All teams said it was played in the true spirit” - sorry but I just do not see such a feeling in any other Essex inter-club competition! Thank you to Daz/Darren, and the other team Captains who regularly add such comments to the score sheets. One further note on today’s match however. A compelling victory by Crondon’s Darrell Miller against Notleys’ Chairman Dave White, sees Darrell with maximum points on the singles Order of Merit – and yet he shares this position currently with two other players: Burnham’s James Marchant, and Burstead’s John Rochford. Likewise in the Doubles OOM five players have maximum points from Burstead, Manor of Groves and Burnham on Crouch - keep up the good work guys! Furthermore, there are still some “do or die” matches to be played. Division B will conclude with either Stock Brook Manor or Stableford Abbotts winning at the very last match of Round 4. Many of the other Divisions have one, two or even three teams in contention for the last match of the League phase, with only really the unbeaten Burstead of Division F progressing to the qualifiers. Brilliantly I am also picking up on some other new clubs looking to join us in 2017 – after our entry from Canons Brook last month, the good folk at Frinton Golf Club have also been in touch to progress future membership. As you know, and especially given the 100% positive feedback I receive from clubs who participate in our mid-handicap golf competition, I am always keen to grow our numbers. So please spread the news in you other local club matches, and ask clubs to contact me directly – philip.redhead@bt.com We have been brilliantly supported through recent years by Mike Seabrook from Seabrook Warehousing and this continues in 2016 - than you Mike and the team! Thanks also to the excellent team supporting the competition - Christer Stenbacka, Alan Tindall, Neil Wells, Colin Firth, and Neil Mitchell who move us forward despite often having conflicting priorities too.

With the money Briggs has given to the amd section all the juniors have been supplied with new tops. They have repaid their sponsor by playing well in the Youth Shield with wins over Hainault Forest, Garon Park and Romford and a narrow loss to Thorpe Hall placing them in

second place in their league with two matches still to come. This follows a creditable 6th place by one team in the Faldo Wedge, the way being lead by the two girls with Aliyah Jamil 40pts and Izzy Lush having 36. aturday 11th June was a special day in the Burnham Golf Club calendar. The competition is the John Harding Trophy also known as the anniversary. It is open to all sections and so there is usually a big field. It is followed by the Club Summer Ball so a very special day for the club Captain. This year Captain Roger Miles made it very memorable by scoring a Hole in One on the 15th -170 yards with a 5 iron. However he was not the winner on the day. - 57 -

SHORT GAME LIKE A

US OPEN CHAMP! H

opefully you all managed to watch some of the US Open at Oakmont last month, with much written about the necessity to find the greens in the correct position but also avoid the rough at all costs. The article below details how to play a delicate controlled short short just off the green. We have experienced phenomenal accelerated grass growth due the constant deluges and warm weather. The combination is a real “rough” nightmare and a new learning experience for many golfers. The process with any golf shot is to have an understanding of the technicalities involved then to follow a practice routine to improve of which I am very diligent with my clients. So here we have it… a suitably buried lie which I hope will clear a few questions which may be lurking! The main focal point here try not to panic and be realistic based on your ability level. We now

have an array of equipment, which was not available when I was growing up! Plenty of loft and perfectly designed sand wedges to suit all lies and players. Here are some key pointers which even if you adopt within your pre-swing will assist with your strike, but they will act as a starting point for you.

n Lower body stability is important here so a key thought is to minimize lower body movement during the swing. This can be achieved with more knee bend and a wider stance with slightly more weight being centred within the upper thigh of the target leg (left for a righthanded golfer) n The club head will be more “open” at address to introduce maximum loft as in the illustration. n I like to move the hands closer to the shaft at address, which will assist with the wrist hinge and setting of the club in the backswing. n The key is to set the wrists vertically in the backswing with minimal body and arm swing (depending upon shot length) maintaining the loft created at address with the “open” clubface. n The moment of “trust” is just prior to impact as we need to feel as if the hand knuckles on the right hand are pointing at the ground (right handed golfer) this ensures the right hand does not cross over the left as shown in the image below. If this happens, the loft is reduced and the strike will be compromised.

S

heila Dornan, Colchester Golf Club’s ladies’ captain, held her Captain’s Day competition last week just a day-after heavy rain. In a close competition, Sheena Nunny, Jan Murray, Wendy Smith and Janet Austin came in second just one

point behind. With the same margin, third place went to Chris Clarke, Maureen Devenish, Linda Freeman and Judith Robertson. Again just one point behind on 95 points in fourth place were Adrienne Strover, Rosie Helliwell, Gill Minns and Penny Fairs. Nearest the pin prizes went to Cherie Clarke on the 8th and Claire Withnall on the 16th. Rosie Helliwell took the putting prize.

Dick Proctor Trophy at Colchester Golf Club

S

haun Holmes and Iain Cruickshank win the Dick Procter Trophy at Colchester Golf Club. Played in pairs with the better ball counting, their score of 44 points was shared with two others, and the final placings were only decided on countback. Holmes playing off ten and Cruickshank off eight were placed ahead of Kyle Appleton (16) and Neil Arnold (13) with the third pair on the top score being Russell Storey (14) and Mark Hills (14). On completion of the players round Dick Procter’s putter is played for, with the best two putts from three being aggregated. The length of the putt was in the region of 40 feet and the winner, with a total distance from the pin for the two putts being 36 cm (14 inch), was Mark Culley. David Harper was a close second with 38cm and Clive Hebden third with 45 cm.

Stoke-by-Nayland

Ladies Open 14th June 2016

The winning team – 1st overall from Woodbridge. Meg Ramsay, Ann Graves, Pippa Neall and Nina Neilson with (on left) Club Captain Ian Thompson and (on right) Ladies Captain Betty Cox.

F

ewer entries this year (78 from 11 clubs) which, in the circumstances, was probably a good thing. All the ladies were greeted at the entrance to the Club and either directed, if they had been before, or shown which changing room to use and where to register. The weather forecast had not been good but on the day it looked as though it might stay dry until the middle of the afternoon. This was not to be. Thunder and lightning left the pro shop no option but to call the ladies in before 3pm. Four teams had finished their game so it was agreed that the others would not be asked to go out again as this would delay the lunch too much. A 2 tee start meant that all teams had completed at least one nine so it was decided to make it a 9 hole competition with a first, second and third prize for each 9 and the overall winners being those with the highest 9 hole score. All ladies passed the halfway hut before the interruption and enjoyed the delicious home baked refreshments supplied by a band of volunteers. Organisers, Barbara Jones and Stella Buchanan thanked all those who helped on the day but gave special thanks to Captain Ian and Vice Captain

Don who did the scoring and calmly dealt with the time consuming and mind boggling task of creating some acceptable results from all the uncompleted cards. The winners on countback, with 41 points on the back 9, were Meg Ramsey, Ann Graves, Pippa Neal and Nina Neilson from Woodbridge and there was a very nice email from them waiting for the organisers when they got home at the end of the day. Six birdies were scored and an eagle 3 on the 5th.

Paula Tennant (centre) from Hintlesham had an eagle on the par 5, 5th Gainsborough. On left Club Captain Ian Thompson, on right Ladies Captain Betty Cox.
