Alan and Cassie up to Scratch at Colchester A

lan Sharrocks and Cassie Cunningham proved themselves up to scratch at Colchester Golf Club. On a difficult day weather-wise, onehandicapper Sharrocks returned the lowest gross score of 73 to take the scratch Centenary Medal with Cunningham victorious in the ladies' competition. Sharrocks had a topsy-turvey start with three bogies and a birdie in the first six holes but steadied himself superbly with 11 pars and just one bogey in his last 12 holes. Cunningham, in contrast, began well with a birdie at the fifth leaving her level par, but doubles at nine, 15 and 18 rather spoiled her card but her gross 84 was still enough to win. The men’s Handicap Medal was won by Daniel Harness playing off 16, who fired a nett 67 to squeeze out Christopher Monk (10) on countback. Harness had three key pars in the last five holes to secure victory while Monk was left to rue double bogies at holes three, eight and eleven. Chris Carlin (20) and Robin Tucker (21) took third

Cassie Cunningham.

and fourth spots after being separated after a countback with both returning nett 69s. Martin Webb (9), Keith Newnham (5), Matthew Michael (10), Brendan Booth (5), Bill Eke (5) and Marl Westall all shot nett 70s to complete the top ten.

Alan Sharrocks.

The Peter Shilton Golf Day

T

he Essex Golf And Country Club held the Peter Shilton Golf Day and what a amazing success it turned out to be. The following celebrities arrived bright and early to play golf and support our day in aid of St Helena Hospice, Peter Shilton OBE, Sir Trevor Brooking, Jess Conrad OBE, John H Stracey, Bob Champion and Derek Redmond. Teams gathered for breakfast. After the golf they were entertained by Alison Jennings the Jazz singer and presentations sponsored by Smartcaddie. We also run a nearest the pin competition, the winner won a magnum of expensive Champagne.

The gala dinner in the evening was a complete sell out we had to close bookings several weeks before. Cllr Kevin Bentley and I hosted the evening. John Peirce top Welsh tenor sang as a singing waiter, there was a Rat Pack Show ( Tony James, Joe Fryd and John H Stracey) then Peter gave after dinner stories from his amazing career followed by some singing from Steph. The day raised around ÂŁ4000 for st Helena Hospice. Steph and Pete also wished to raise the point that playing promotes great fitness, well being and is a highly sociable game. They also promote the sport for the retired and seniors.

Golfers Switch on to Free Motocaddy GPS APP!

G

olfers have switched on to the idea of a free GPS app from leading trolley brand Motocaddy, with more than 13,000 downloads being made in April alone. The Motocaddy GPS App was launched earlier this year in order to capitalise on the first Major of the season with interest in the game at its peak. Featuring a number of easy-to-use modes, the brand’s first-ever mobile phone app can be used as a stand-alone, fully-featured mobile GPS device. Or, it can be synced with the world’s first GPS electric trolley – Motocaddy’s S5 CONNECT – launched this summer with smartphone notifications and a USB charging point. Utilising the database of the world’s foremost golf mapping company, the Motocaddy App features 36,000 accessible courses worldwide through its ‘Play Now’ mode – depicting overhead maps, accurate yardages and detailed hole information. It also includes a unique ‘Power Save’ option which provides front, middle and back yardages, while reducing battery and data usage significantly. “The app has been developed for use with the revolutionary S5 CONNECT trolley and the -8-

success of the app bodes well for the upcoming launch. We started taking pre-orders for the trolley in March and the response has been unbelievable with virtually all of our customers placing an order. We are confident that in conjunction with the app, the S5 CONNECT will offer the perfect solution for the modern golfer looking to stay connected,” added Tony. The extensive list of features on the Motocaddy GPS App also includes: • shot planning control that shows the distance to any point on each hole; • measurement of the distance achieved by any shot; • local course search and automatic hole advancement; • a round timer to assist with pace-of-play; • detailed greenside information; • communication in five different languages (English, French, German, Spanish and Swedish). The Motocaddy GPS App is available free on iOS and Android from the Apple App Store and on Google Play. www.motocaddy.com

MAKE BUNKER

PLAY SIMPLE A

s I’m coming to the last tuition break of this spring in the Pravets Resort Bulgaria, it strikes me how complicated my guests seem to make bunker play. I see them with the club at some strange angles and looking very uncomfortable, as they are not used to how the club and set up they are trying to make looks. They have been told to open the face, aim left, use the bounce!! And although this may all be correct there is an easier way. Stand square, hold the club face square and

1

swing on your normal path as I am doing in Picture 1. The most critical point regarding your success in the bunker is your ability to impact the sand a consistent distance behind the ball. Approx two inches shown in Picture 2, and swing through to a completed finish Picture 3. Try this simple way of playing your bunker shots, you will be amazed at your success rate. Have fun Gary

SHOT 4 MAKE SOLID CONTACT

T

he fourth shot in how we are going to go four shots lower after controlling the speed of your putts is making good contact. Most players want to be consistent but in my experience and better way to say that is to, ‘to make repeatable contact’. Think about the shots that are most destructive. Are they the ones that you mis strike?

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR MAKING THE STRIKE MORE REPEATABLE GET THE LOW POINT INFRONT OF THE BALL – The club swings on an arc and this are has a low point. If the low point is behind the ball you will either hit the ball on the way up causing a thin shot or hit the ground before the ball creating a fat shot.

HOW TO GET STARTED OR GET GOING AGAIN?

BRUSH THE GRASS INFRONT OF THE TEE DRILL – Put a tee in the ground to use as a reference point and work on brushing the grass after the tee. Pay attention to where your low point is and work on getting this to happen after the tee. ON THE COURSE – When you are making a practice swing aim to make a good brush contact with the grass in front of the ball. It will give you a good reminder about making good contact. - 12 -

A New Layout at The Wensum

T

he Wensum Valley Hotel Golf and Country Club has been one of Norfolk’s best loved Golf spots since it opened in 1990, but following the death of her father, Bridgette Hall has taken over as Managing Director. Bridgette has been part of the business since it opened in 1990 and is making her mark at the helm with some significant improvements to both of the 18 hole courses. The Wensum, a Championship course with beautiful lakes and an island green, has a new layout, there’s new signage to both

courses, and all of this is being implemented under the watchful eye of the newly appointed Course Manager. Both courses are playable all year round and with a 12 bay floodlit driving range, a well stocked pro shop and a 90 bedroom Hotel with leisure facilities, Wensum Valley is the perfect location for a short break, golf day, family holiday or society outing. Golf breaks start at £85 and include Dinner Bed, Breakfast and unlimited Golf.

WHY DO GREENS HAVE SLOPES? I

t's been a while since my last article but I am back with hopefully an interesting subject. So why do greens have slopes? Well, when I ask this question most of the time the quote which is perfectly logical is "to make it hard for us". I couldn't agree more, but there is a main reason and that is greens are designed to get rid of water. You need about 2% slope for Water to move and that's why when you have flat areas on greens they flood when you have a lot of rain. The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth is a great example of some greens being raised so that in wet conditions play can continue and also The Centenary course at Gleneagles where the 2014 Ryder Cup was held, the greens are unlikely to flood due to drainage systems beneath. I have been very fortunate to work at both venues when I was coaching Simon Khan Putting and 1 of the things we worked on was slope putting. In 2013, the year Simon lost in a playoff at Wentworth, we worked prior to the tournament on understanding slope putting and how much a putt would break depending on percentage of slope and speed of the greens. This was also helped by understanding the straight putt through the hole location which is generally not flat. Once we understand where the straight putt is, by

using the green to move the ball into the hole, we can then hit our putt on that particular line and allow slope and gravity and the speed of the green to make this happen. The best way to describe this is, "that we putt everything on a straight line, it's the green that moves the ball". Attempt this drill - Go on the putting green and put yourself at a 90 degree right angle to the slope at 10ft from the hole. Choose this putt on a continuous slope which is what we call a "Planer Green" i.e. The same angled slope. Pick a point to the right of the hole and stroke a putt at this point. You may find it immediately or it may take time before you hole the putt by choosing the right aim and speed of it. Go to 5ft and then halve how far right of the hole the original aim was at 10ft. If you hole it pretty quickly you are beginning to green read.Yes there is more to it than just that, but at least it's a start! If you would like to understand more, please contact me on my Mobile or email and learn what helped Simon to a fantastic season in 2013.

STAY MOBILE I

s stretching enough? In my opinion ... no. Stretching is fantastic and keeps most muscles mobile and supple, however, deep set tight musculature can need massage, mobilisation and release to free up the tight fibres. Massage on a regular basis can get expensive, therefore, I teach my clients to self massage! Using a foam roller and massage ball. In this article I am going to talk about some muscles that I feel are essential to mobilise through self massage to keep back pain or hip pain at bay! You will need a 6 Iliotibial foam roller - 45cm.You Tract will also need a tennis ball or even better a lacrosse ball. For me there are 3 primary contributors to back and hip pain ... the Piriformis, the gluteus medius and the ITB (illiotibial band). They are very easy to mobilise and you will feel a noticable difference in your swing when fully mobilised. The piriformis and gluteus medius are in your glutes (butt) and the

ITB runs down the whole side of your leg. Sport highly tightens these muscles but so does inactivity, desk bound jobs, long duration sitting in a car and so on. So, these muscles get tight whatever you do! You will need to YouTube Piriformis myofascial release. Gluteus medius myofascial release. Lower body foam roller mobilisations. Gluteus Medius

Gluteus Maximus

Gluteus Minimus

Piriformis

Give all the techniques a go for a good month, trying to use the techniques a few times a week and always let me know how you get on or if you have any questions that i can help you with.

ere’s a question for you ... How many people actually play golf or simply practice their way around the golf course? In my experience the majority of people just practice their way round trying to find the answer bad news I’m afraid ... you won’t. Why? Because their isn’t one … well, not one that golfers’ will generally want to hear. This is because of the way many golfers are conditioned to play the game - it’s all about the swing … but swinging the club is one thing, playing the game is another … and there are always few old chestnuts that come out: “If I keep practicing I will get better” - not if you are practicing the wrong thing you won’t “If I buy the latest driver the guy said that my 30 yard cut will turn into a 5 yard draw” - he’s lying, it’s impossible “I just want to be consistent” - tough cookie that one, do you really have the time to practice enough? “Currently I’m hitting a fade but my coach wants me to draw the ball” - why? What difference does it make what way you shape the ball? Surely you would be better off with the shape that suits your swing style? Most golfers don’t improve because they get in their own way, they search for something that really makes little difference to how they play, but maybe looks a little ‘cosmetically’ better. So what actually makes a golfer better? In my opinion there are two key factors: 1. How good is your bad shot? 2. Is the ball in play?

Basically if your bad shot still gives you a a second shot to the green then that’s fine - but surely that’s down to technique I hear you say but there are easier ‘fixes’ before you look at technique: 1. Was it the correct club selection? 2. How have I been hitting the ball today? 3. Did I allow for my shape? So, there’s the insanity ... I hear so often: “I always go in the ditch on the 14th” or “I always go out of bounds on the 17th.” But what did you change? If you played the same shot then you will still go in the ditch or out of bounds! How about changing club? It doesn’t make you less of a golfer - it just means you are smart and know how to play. Ok, now that’s out the way let’s talk about how golf equipment fits in here. Too many golfers are victims of ‘Fashion Fitting’. This means that whatever product is being pushed in the media is what you are going to get…it’s an easy sell, so it’s easier for the fitter. Get what is right for you - if that is not the one that is on every advert when the golf is on so be it remember it’s the price that you pay funds the advertising budget. If you keep buying the same clubs over and over again without exploring the different options unfortunately you won’t get any better. Always approach any fitting with an open mind, don’t go in knowing what you want because, funny enough, that’s what you will get problem is it may not be what you need.

Haven House Annual Golf Day

A

Thankfully, the weather held out for our golfers with Wilson James taking the winners shield. Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House, said: “Once again, our Golf Day has raised a fantastic amount for life-limited children and their families in our surrounding area. I would like to thank Abridge Golf & Country Club and our sponsors for making the day such a success.”

record 22 teams took part in the annual Haven House Golf Day on 18 May at Abridge Golf & Country Club, raising £14,300 for the hospice. The fantastic amount raised would not have been possible without the support of all of our guests. We are also very grateful to our main sponsors V-Fund/Landhold Developments and F J Church and Sons, as well as all of our hole sponsors.

Lee Kidger’s Big Day

L

ee Kidger (6) completed an unbelievable task, shooting level par, gross 70 (nett 64) in the links like conditions of the third round of the Playgolf Colchester Club Championship qualifiers. The additional run on offer, combined with the luck of the bounce and judging how the ball will react on approach shots, if landing short or selecting and executing the correct shot to the tiny greens on full shots, is an art form, one that many struggle with. However, Kidgers’ master-clases in course management saw him kick the rulebook out to win division one. His card saw him pencil in 10 pars, four bogies and capped off with four birdies. Promising junior member Jack Moutell (7) shot an amazing gross 74 (nett 67) to take the runner up spot. His card highlights saw him pencil in 11 pars and a pair of birdies. Ron Gilzean (13) took third place with his nett 68, pencilling in a superbly consistent 11 pars. Matthew Clarke (17) returned a nett 70 to win division two with second and third decided on countback after runner-up Lee Whitten (15) beat Andreas Fantousi (17) to third place after both

carded nett 75. Andrew Southgate (27) blew the rest of the field away in division three with his nett 63 to earn a two-shot handicap cut next time out. John MacDonald’s nett 69 saw him take the runner up spot from Bernie Keys whose putter was on form to help him save a nett 70 to take third place.

Newton Green is a Hit with Society Teams

A

n annual society day at Newton Green Golf Club has helped boost interest in groups visiting the club near Sudbury. Eighty players making up 20, four-ball teams from Suffolk and Essex took part in the second annual society day run by the club.

Lee Vaughan, Colin Martin, Rebecca Evans, Jim Smith (for Graham Horne) and Steve Lawrence.

Ben Tawell, club manager, said: “We started this initiative last year and immediately attracted 18 teams. We invite all the societies that support us, and the day has proved a very successful format. “We have received excellent feedback regarding the condition of our course and

catering, which in turn we would hope will increase interest in even more societies visiting our club. Our bookings for this summer are already showing a marked increase. “People seem to enjoy the atmosphere of a members’ club that shows a welcoming approach to visiting groups. Our course offers an interesting challenge suitable for people who appreciate traditional, historic golf blended with attractive and challenging new holes.” Club women’s captain Rebeccca Evans presented awards, and One Railway Golf Society were winners of the day, followed by a team from Brett Vale, with the Sudbury Wanderers Golf Society third. Winners 1: One Railway Society Essex (Lee Vaughan, Colin Martin, Graham Horne and Steve Lawrence), 2 Brett Vale (Robert Holmes, Gareth Morgan, Steve Carr and Les Norman)), 3 Sudbury Wanderers (Derek King, Dave Fisher, Peter Hebditch and Allan Scott).

PITCH LIKE THE PRO'S A

30-50 yards pitch shot occupies an awkward distance for many golfers? Too short for a full swing and too long for a basic chip shot. Gaining a consistent contact is crucial, allowing you to develop a good feel for the distance! 2 points that will help you achieve this are as follows

1. Gain a good body position, ensuring your sternum is in line to the ball.

2. Pivot and rotate to the target, allowing the right knee to release through as in images

These two key moves will help you to strike the ball crisply, helping you to develop better awareness of your distance control. Over 65% of the game is played within 70 yards of the pin! Would you like to learn to do this better? SCORING SCHOOL CHIPPING & PITCHING

Essex PGA at Colchester

Essex PGA winning team Chris Cutchie, Dave Blackmore, Jim Matlby and Barrie Cutchie.

C

olchester Golf Club professional Chris Cutchie found there was no place like home as the club hosted the Essex PGA pro-am. Cutchie, the county’s PGA captain for 2017, lead his team of Dave Blackmore, Jim Matlby and Barrie Cutchie to victory over 32 other teams – posting 92 points for a four-shot victory. Photograph attached. Phil Davies, Ian Parry and Ernest Van Verenbech were runners-up with Jason Levermore’s Clacton team third on countback ahead of Andy Smith, Keith Newnham and Mark Weale with pro Gary Carter. The professionals’ prize was won by James Scade with a impressive 68 - despite double bogeying 17. Levermore was second alongside Lloyd Kennedy on 69. Cutchie finished fourth with a 70 while the club’s other head pro Mark Baker tied eighth after a 71. - 40 -

The club then staged the prestigious Essex Open with 80 pros and amateurs competing over 36 holes. James Webber and Levermore led the way after the morning round with 68s but faced a fierce onslaught from Jack Winer who was level in the morning but fired a best-of-the-day 66 to finish on 4-under for the two rounds. Levermore was 5-under playing 18, but hooked his ball into the ditch before dropping out and then finding the front left-hand bunker. He played an incredible bunker shot to save bogey and force a playoff which he won on the second extra hole to retain his trophy and collect the £1200 first prize. Highlight of the day though was a hole in one on the eighth for former Colchester head pro Mark Angel.

THE LUCKY OR UNLUCKY CLOVER This is a lie which we can often find ourselves so playing a shot from the deep lush clover requires a few changes both from our club selection, technique and thought process.

- 42 -

T

his is a rather unlucky clover lie in which one of my Golfinggirls recently found themselves during a course management session. They now are armed with the knowledge how to approach and play the shot. The clover lie is tough as the plant is very dense and tightly knitted which can cause strike and directional problems for the golfer. My golden rule is “Respect” playing a ball from the rough or clover must be given the respect it deserves with any expectation levels taken into consideration according to the standard of player. So, firstly from an equipment perspective maximum loft should be used from this particular lie with a recommendation to aim slightly further right with a slightly open clubface. The rough or clover will have a tendency to “grab” the hosel of the club as your strike the ball resulting in a low left shot. This is the main reason to use a more lofted club regardless of the yardage remaining, too little loft and the ball scuttles a short distance in front of the player. I would advocate the following alterations in conjunction with increased clubhead speed. n n n

Greenkeepers Blog From Essex BIGGA W

hatever happened to April showers? Spring so far has been very dry, indeed to start of 2017 has seen very limited rainfall, those course managers in the county that track and keep rainfall records have probably seen just over 100mm of rainfall since the beginning of January. To put that into context as a region of the UK the long-term average annual rainfall figure for Essex would be around 600mm per year, summer months could yield only about 20mm of rainfall per month and that’s why irrigation is vital for turf health. I read last week that the Met Office detailed this has been the driest start to the year since 1981, with last summer and autumn also very dry and below average rainfall those areas on golf courses which can not be supplied with supplemental irrigation suffered and never fully recovered before winter dormancy arrived. Moisture levels in the soil are dangerously low and irrigation systems have been put into use far earlier than desired or needed in the past. For every course manager spring is about promoting recovery of playing areas via aeration and alleviation of compaction, the addition of fertiliser to promote growth and vigour along with overseeding worn thin turf to promote uniform playing surfaces for the competition season ahead. It is often said mother nature is the real head greenkeeper as we can not force grass to grow if conditions do not allow it; the measurement of growth potential (first used in agriculture) is now closely followed within turf management. Plants and nature react to changing climatic conditions namely temperature and moisture. If soil temperatures are rising and soil moisture levels

are good then growth potential increases and seeds will germinate. So far this spring soil temperatures are not really rising due to cold overnight temperatures – still seeing morning frosts at the end of April and the lack of rainfall with associated winds have greatly reduced soil moistures levels. This means planned recovery from spring maintenance and repair programs is behind schedule which is frustrating for the both golfer and greenkeeping teams who are having to delay plans of other work until grass is actively growing again. Reductions to summer mowing heights may have been postponed along with verti-cutting to reduce lateral growth, this means green speeds are not where your course manager would like them to be. Some grass species are growing and others hardly at all which can mean bumpy and bobbly surfaces till uniform growth establishes. Seed hasn’t germinated as wished therefore meaning old diseases scars from winter if your course was affected in December are still showing on greens. On a positive note most areas are very firm and ball roll along fairways is probably greater than would be expected and plugged balls are no longer along with restrictions to trolleys and buggy’s which might be expected during a wet April. As soon as temperatures increase, soil moisture levels improve then recovery will quickly follow but please be patient with greenstaff. The course “up the road” is experiencing the same weather and therefore more than likely the same growth potential which is very low at the moment as we head into the May Spring Bank Holiday. T

he 63rd AGM of the Society of Essex Lady Captains was well attended at The Warren in early May. After the customary bacon rolls the short but informative AGM took place. There was a vote of thanks by one of the members for all the hard work the Committee put in to run the events. The draw for the 4BBB competition was announced and players teed off from midday. Despite it being the Spring Meeting, most of the time it felt like winter in the chilly temperatures and wind. Thankfully the sun eventually managed to poke its head through the clouds for a short while. All the ladies were treated to a delicious meal at the end of the day and prizes were presented by Jan Collier (Lady President) and Lesley Aylmer (Lady Captain at The Warren). Thanks to Lesley and her ladies for helping us to make it a great day. Thanks also to The Warren for hosting the event and to all the staff who made us all very welcome.

The prizes were fiercely contested with all but the Best Front 9 decided on count back. 3 pairs finished with 41 points but in 4th place with 42 points were Helen Williams (The Burstead) & Hazel Hastings (Ballards Gore), second place went to Jane Wright (Chelmsford) & Carol Berry (Garon Park) also on 42 points. Runners up on the day were Pat Flynn (The Rayleigh Club) & Linda Welham (Belfairs) with 43 points. In first place and winners of the Iris Stranks Salver were Maggie Stevenson (formerly of North Weald) & Jan Eves (Colne Valley) also on 43 points. The winners are pictured receiving their prizes from Jan Collier (Lady President) & Lesley Aylmer (Lady Captain at The Warren. Places are available at our meetings at Upminster Golf Club on 13 July and Stoke by Nayland on 15 August. Any past or present Essex Lady Captains that would like to join us at either of these events should contact Jane Collier (Meetings Organiser) via email janecollier03@btinternet.com - 47 -

Give Every Shot the Attention it Deserves

A

s many of you would have seen from the past few issues of Essex Golfer, we held two Masterclasses in Essex during January and February. The results, to say the least, have been fantastic! We’ve had an exciting few weeks of golf to watch, with Dustin Johnson justifying his ranking as World Number 1, before a freak accident ruled him out of this years first major. Sergio Garcia went on to actually win his first major,The Masters at Augusta National, after 73 attempts. It’s interesting to note Garcia’s words, following the tournament; ‘I felt much calmer than I felt on any major championship Sunday’ and it asks the question, how much better could we all be with a ‘calm mind’? The Mind Zone took a trip to Wentworth for day two of the BMW PGA Championship, which always proves to not only be a great tournament, but day two sees many players, near the ‘cut line’ take on shots that sometimes they wouldn’t, in order to be there for the last two days. One player that caught our eye was Felipe Aguilar, who was +2 after round one. He got off to a great start, parring the first and getting a two on the par 3 second. Then came hole number three, a par 4 of 459 yards, with two bunkers protecting the green. A great drive down the middle, he then slightly pushed his second into the right green side bunker and that’s when he threw his club down in anger, landing 6 yards from his bag. Reading his body language, it was evident he was livid with himself, however, the ball was in the bunker, he’d taken the shot (which as we know in golf, has to be counted) and he had to have the mental strength to deal with it. His bunker shot was poor, way too fast, (still doubtless annoyed with himself for putting himself in the bunker in the first place), but the ball stayed in the bunker! Stepping straight up to the ball, without a routine or process, he nudged it out of the bunker, but a long way from the flag, which

then required two putts. He walked off the green with a double bogey! We have all played shots that are less than perfect, but the secret of good golf is consistent GOOD shots; never compounding a poor shot with another poor shot. The interesting point here is that on the 18th, par 5, Aguilar needed an Eagle to make the cut! He drove well, second shot to the green, about 8 feet from the pin … and missed the putt AND the cut! If he had only controlled his emotions better, had a proven process and calm mind, back at the third hole, then perhaps he would have made the cut? Alex Noren, the eventual Alex Noren, eventual winner of the winner, came BMW PGA with a couple of from seven shots ‘Mind Zone’ enthusiasts! back on the final day, and admitted he wasn’t thinking about the deficit, just concentrating on playing a good round of golf. The most important shot you will take is the next one, not the ones before, or the ones that you would like to hit, three or four holes ahead, but the very next shot … and when you’ve played that, wherever it ends up, the next one becomes the most important. It’s all about having and maintaining a calm mind, which is just one of the areas we focus on, to make you a better, more consistent golfer, regardless of your handicap. We’ve had some tremendous success with golfers that have attended some of our sessions, and keep an eye out in future Essex Golfer editions for details of how and where you can attend a Mind Zone session. County Match

ESSEX v KENT Brentwood Golf Club – Saturday 29th April 2017 A warm welcome from a splendid looking Brentwood Golf Club set the stage for this annual clash between Essex and the highly rated Kent county side. Always noted for fielding a very strong team, today was no exception as the reigning South East Group champions Kent included one plus 4 player, 2 plus 3s and a strong supporting cast. Average handicaps of +1.38 compared to Essex +0.39. The morning foursomes however turned the form book upside down with local Brentwood golfer Joe Tatam making his County debut along with Abridge’s Jamie Richards handing out the first shock of the day by beating Kent top pair Liam Burns and Jamie Guppy. Spurred on by this the rest of Essex turned the screw with some spectacular golf and by lunch had established a 4 ½ to ½ lead. The afternoon brought no sign of a weakening of resolve as Essex dominated the proceedings with a 6 ½ to 3 ½ winning margin. Outstanding performances from all the team but special mention for Keating Trophy qualifying winner Curtis Knipes from Abridge, beating his opponent 8 & 7 and finishing the round some 7 shots under par. BB&O v ESSEX Frilford Heath Golf Club – Sunday 14th May 2017

The Essex County Team’s first league match of the season was an away fixture against last year’s Northern League winners BB & O at the superb Frilford Heath Golf Club (Red Course), as tough an opener as one could hope for with our opponents again fielding an extremely strong side. The morning foursomes proved this to be the case with the home side coming in to lunch 3 to 1 up after giving our lads a lesson in how to hole putts on the excellent greens. one against Tim Shin and being 1 down after 5 holes he had managed to get back to all square at the turn. With news filtering around the course that BBO were in command of the match Jay proceeded to show true class by winning the 15th and 16th to takes a 2 hole dormie lead which he then turned into the first point of the afternoon in favour of Essex. News of this victory seemed to spur on the rest of the team and suddenly matches were slowly turning. Callum Pipe from being 2 down after 12 holes winning 3 holes on the spin to take a 1 hole lead down the last and turning this into another point for Essex. Game on ?? A steady Ali Plumb gained the 3rd unanswered point and things were looking interesting. Further wins from Michael Gilbert and Curtis Knipes with a BBO win against Arron EdwardsHill left Essex with the 6 points needed to avoid defeat and only half a point required from the 2 games left out on the course for a very unlikely victory. Both of these matches were dormie 2 up for BBO and they went on to secure a nail-biting and well deserved 6 all draw. Stirring stuff in a most enthralling encounter. Thanks to Frilford Heath Golf Club for their hospitality on a marvellous golf course in superb condition. PHIL HULSE County Team Manager

SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY & THE COLTS CHAMPIONSHIP Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Friday 19th May 2017 Following a three day deluge of rain prior to this competition it took a great effort by the Green Keeping staff at Thorpe Hall to ensure the players had an excellent course to challenge themselves against. The field found the tight and well manicured course tough due to the wet ground conditions, with early starter Bobby Parmar (Abridge) setting the pace with a two over par 73. This was matched a little later by Jason Renton (Basildon) and James Mack (Stoke by Nayland). Joshua Cardy (Three Rivers) then submitted a level par 71 along with Jack Garnett (Five Lakes), and finally as the last players completed their morning round we had two sub-par rounds. Callum Hilton (The Warren) completed his round in 70, and Jack Brown (Chelmsford) held the morning Clubhouse lead with an excellent round of 69. The Colts Championship for Under 21’s is run in conjunction with The Sir Michael Bonallack and this year the halfway lead was also held by Jack Brown with his two under par 69, followed by Callum Hilton’s 70. In the afternoon both Bobby Parmar and Jason Renton improved on their 1st round scores with one over par 72’s, setting the Clubhouse lead at 145. Jamie Reynolds (Bentley) then submitted the best 2nd round score to date with a level par 71, which was soon matched by James Mack, the latter player setting a new Clubhouse target of 144. One of the county’s young rising stars, Harvey Sullivan (Abridge), made a big improvement on his morning round, completing his 2nd round in a one under par 70, a great effort after a disappointing morning. Jack Brown, the 1st round leader, followed up with a very steady 73 in the afternoon to take the Clubhouse lead with a 142 total, with only a couple of groups remaining out on the course. Josh Cardy could only manage a 73 in the afternoon to finish in a group of players on 144, and in the final group to finish Alex Woodward (Boyce Hill) submitted the best score of the day, a 68, but was left rueing his morning round of 76 as it left him in the group of 144 totals. It was another good performance for James Mack, Jack Brown and Alex Woodward. Alex Woodward, his third podium finish in this event in three years, and his second runner-up finish in a 2017 Order of Merit event. He now leads the Order of Merit table after three events. But the champion golfer of the day was Jack Brown, as his two round total, a level par 144 was enough to win the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy, and the Colts Championship. Congratulations Jack! Third place in the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy went to James Mack on countback, and he also finished runer up in the Colts Championship with his 144 total, with Bobby Parmar finishing in third place. The nett prizes went to Jamie Reynolds with a 137 nett score, followed by another young rising star Teddy Papple (Stock Brook Manor) with a nett 139. Thorpe Hall was in fabulous condition and their hospitality, as always was impeccable. Thank you to the Club, their staff and the members for giving up their course for the day. Full results are available on our website as well as the Order of Merit table. Follow us on Twitter to stay in touch with Essex County Golf News and information. @essexgolfunion

The Saturday morning draw paired Essex with the 2016 winners Leicestershire & Rutland, who were most onlooker’s favourites again this year, and BB&O who had mastered the Essex team in the foursomes section of the South East League encounter a week earlier. The Essex team were quickly on top in these matches, and by lunchtime had beaten both opponents 4.5 to 0.5, giving a 9 point total and a 1 point lead over home county Lincolnshire. In the afternoon matches Essex played Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, and again a very good performance saw a 4 – 1 victory and a 3 – 2 victory respectively. Overnight Essex held a 2 point lead over Lincolnshire at the head of the field. On the Sunday morning the Essex team faced their nearest challengers, Lincolnshire, and Suffolk. Some outstanding golf resulted in Essex demolishing Lincolnshire 5 – 0, and beating Suffolk 4 – 1, giving the Essex team another 9 points and a commanding 6.5 point lead with the final round to play. The Essex team made a nervous start to the final round, needing only 4 points to ensure the trophy was secured. Jay Beisser and Curtis Knipes secured 1 point from the first match out, but the following two matches were very close with Essex finally losing out by narrow margins. However, Andy May and Taylor Carter played excellent golf comfortably winning both their matches, so it was left to Ali Plumb and Brandon Meads to ensure the celebrations could start, this they did with PTO a win in the match against Cambridgeshire. !""!#

South East Group Seniors League – North

ESSEX v BERKS BUCK & OXON Thorndon Park Golf Club – Monday 22nd May 2017 On a perfect day for golf Thorndon Park looked magnificent with the backdrop of the old Hall and the beautifully tended course. The match was of major importance as last year BB&O had won the league and had destroyed our previously unbeaten record in the last game of the season. From news coming from around the course it became apparent that the match would be extremely close and so it proved. The first match on the course was our English International Mark Stones, who was drawn against their English International David Niven. We saw them at the 12th where they were all square and when we next saw them it was on the 16th where Mark was 1 up. We then went forward to the 17th which Mark duly won to win 2 up with 1 to play. This win put us ahead 5/3 and only needing half a point to win the match, however Chris Aukett had been beaten 4/3 so this left the match hanging on the shoulders of new Team Member Mark Whitten who came down the 17th 2 up an secure a half on the hole which won him his game and Essex the match by 6 games to 4. Our next league match is on 6th July at Romford where we play Hertfordshire.

New TomTom GPS Golf Watch Range

T

G-RIP’s New Lightweight FL-1 Grip Will Putt Feel In Your Stroke

A

ll good golfers understand that the key to successful putting is feel. A feel for distance, a feel for the speed of the green, a feel for the stroke, and above all, a feel for the putter itself. And in a game where narrow misses can be costly, and small errors lead to big scores, putting is also about precision. Which is why specialist grip brand G-RIP’s latest model, the oversized lightweight (55gms) FL-1, not only encourages a light grip pressure on the putter, enhancing feel and control, but also helps provide a smooth stroke, leading to better distance control, improved consistency, and more holed putts. And, in another ground-breaking design feature, the FL-1 also stands out from the crowd courtesy of its unique triangular shape. The new G-RIP FL-1 putter grip combines G-RIP’s innovative technology and use of high-performance materials to help golfers of all abilities get more feel into their putting game and help lower their scores. The key to the FL-1’s enhanced performance is a lightweight EVA under-listing with a microfibre cover. The cover itself features hundreds of tiny silicone buds on the surface, which create more points of contact with the hands, for an enhanced grip. The microfibre material, which is unique to the putter market, helps wick water away from the surface to ensure the golfer maintains a solid connection with the grip in damp conditions and wet weather, while its moisture-repelling properties also work to combat sweat, making it equally effective in hot and humid conditions. The silicone buds allow the grip’s surface to be dried easily and speedily, with a quick wipe with a towel see them returned to dry in seconds. The new FL-1 comes in a choice of five bold colour options – black, red, blue, burnt orange, and apple green. Conforming to the Rules of Golf the FL-1 putter grip is available from: sales@diamondgolf.co.uk

GolfBuddy Launches LR7 Laser Rangefinders

G

olfBuddy, the world-leading developer of distance measuring devices made exclusively for golfers, is introducing two new models of laser rangefinder for 2017 – LR7 and LR7S. Following the early season success of the GolfBuddy WTX and WT6 GPS watches, and benefitting from GolfBuddy’s new U.K. based customer support service, the LR7 models are set to make a significant impact at U.K. retail. Both LR7 models build on the market leading features of GolfBuddy’s hugely popular LR5. Housed in a compact, ergonomic body and weighing just 218g, the lightweight LR7 fits snugly in the hand and provides accurate distances to +- 1 yard at a simple touch of a button. With 6 x magnification for ease of target location and four scan modes, the LR7 is simple to use and has a mode function for every preference. Standard mode provides a quick distance to any selected target. With one click, Scan mode continuously scans for 10 seconds showing distances to varying targets. This proves particularly useful for assessing various hazards from the tee. Pin mode, again with just one click, scans for 10 seconds before displaying the distance to the closest target, making it most useful for approach shots. Pin finder mode repeats the function of pin mode but adds in a vibration function for confirmation of an acquired target. Practical features such as automatic shut off after 10 seconds, water resistance, default to last used settings and eyepiece adjustment for varying visual requirements finish off the package and with a battery indicator keeping track of 3000 to 5000 estimated uses you’ll never be caught short for a distance with the LR7. The LR7S takes all of the practical simplicity offered by the LR7 and adds in a slope function that provides distances that take into account the elevation of the target. This provides an invaluable learning tool in practice rounds for gauging the effect of slope on club selection. While not eligible for tournament play, the feature can be turned off making the LR7S legal for use in all formats of the game. The clean, white/silver/black design of the GolfBuddy LR7/S looks great on the course and with a travel case and lanyard as standard, each model can be securely attached to a golf bag. With the LR7 models accurate distances to any target are just a quick scan away and at retail prices of £249.99 for the LR7 and £279.99 for LR7S the new models provide some of the best value for money distance measurement on the market. Both models are available to order now with LR7 arriving at retail in early June and LR7S in July.

The New Me!! I

have been in post now for nearly 9 years working under the guise of Essex Golf County Development Officer (CDO). However, my job title has recently been changed to Club Support Officer (CSO), which hopefully reflects my role more effectively as a local support resource to all clubs and golf facilities in Essex. Along with a new job title, my contract circumstances have also changed and I am now employed by England Golf, rather than operating on a self-employed basis. Because of this, I have a new e-mail address and contact number (see below) which are now operational with immediate effect. England Golf now employs a CSO in every county and this further highlights the dedication and focus towards supporting clubs as effectively as possible. Essex is in England Golf ’s East Region, along with Kent, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. The East is headed up by England Golf Regional Manager, Steven Peet.

Underpinning the new England Golf National Strategy, we are placing more emphasis on ‘customer focused’ to primarily ‘help strengthen counties and clubs’ and ‘inspire more people to take up golf, play more often and join a club’ – just two of the new England Golf seven strategic objectives. A hard copy of Growing the Game of Golf in England – The Strategic Plan 2017-2021 has been sent to every club and is also available on the England Golf website. I am already working closely with many clubs on their business and club priorities, but for those unsure of my role, here is some clarity of what services and support I can offer: n n n n n n n n

LISTEN to a club’s needs and work with them to fully understand the business and priority areas for support DEVELOP a tailored action plan and offer support where appropriate SUPPORT clubs to help drive recruitment, retention and membership growth where needed UPDATE clubs on specific training and education opportunities CONNECT clubs with preferred England Golf partners for business to business support SHARE resources, best practice and national trends ACT as your dedicated England Golf local point of contact ENSURE all relevant safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures are in place

If you or your club would like some help or support in these areas, or any others, please do get in contact with me. NEW CONTACT DETAILS: Helen Tarttelin, Essex Club Support Officer, h.tarttelin@englandgolf.org or mobile 07702 913926 - 60 -

News from Clacton

O

ur PGA Professional Samuel Teer played at Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridge. He shot -3 (69) finished 3rd for the Titleist & Footjoy PGA Professionals National Championships, which is being held at Luttrellstown Castle Golf and Country Club in Dublin on the 13th June- 16th June. Good-luck Sam! Our men played our Centenary Salver competition on Sunday. A huge well done to Peter Hewett for winning the competition with nett 67 points! In 2nd, place was Robert Meekings with nett 68 points on countback, and in 3rd place was James Hanks also with nett 68 points on countback. Our ladies continued with their winning streak today when they travelled away to play the ladies at

The Burstead at Billericay. They travelled to The Burstead with some in trepidation after watching their video guide on the internet, the guide mentioned internal out of bounds here and there on various holes and tricky greens but our team took it in their stride. Although it was quite blustery and fairly chilly, our team managed a 4-3 victory, their fourth on the trot. Like last week, two of our team had to play on to the 19th hole, one which was successful and one just missed out. Another great team effort supported by six caddies. Our juniors played in their Youth Shield Match V Colne Valley and won 4-1, excellent result! Attached below, left to right; Harvey Bell, Wilf Elliott, Jake Wells, Henry Goodwin, Joshua Bethell & Katy Yates. Well done to all!
