Sport Remembers The Somme 1916-2016 A

s part of its Somme 100 commemorations, The Royal British Legion is urging golf clubs to fly a Poppy pin flag on the 16th hole of their club’s course. The ‘Fly the Flag’ initiative is part of a nationwide campaign, ‘Sport Remembers the Somme 1916 -2016’, which is calling on sporting organisations, associations, clubs, teams and individuals to commemorate the role played by sportsmen on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The Battle of the Somme, which ran from 01 July – 18 November 1916, was one of the most difficult and costly battles of the First World War. To aid the war effort, virtually all professional sport had been suspended for the duration by the time the Battle of the Somme began. Athletes and players from sports at all levels had volunteered to enlist – sometimes en masse as an entire team and its supporters. Hundreds of golfers, professional and amateur, served in Pals Battalions recruited from towns, villages, schools,

-2-

workplaces and trades. When these battalions suffered losses, as they did mostly at the Somme, the impact was felt at the club and community level. Golfing bodies including The Royal & Ancient Golf Club, Professional Golfers’ Association, The Home Unions and The Golf Club Secretaries’ and Managers’ Association have supported Sport Remembers as have Sir Nick Faldo, Sam Torrance and Colin Montgomerie. Sam Torrance OBE said: “The 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme is a particularly poignant moment for everybody to stop and reflect on the enormous loss of life that occurred across entire communities throughout Europe during the First World War. I fully endorse the Legion’s Sport Remembers campaign and join together with all golfers throughout the UK and Ireland in remembering those Fallen, many of whom belonged to their local golf clubs. For our family, that also means the memory of the 58 Torrances who laid down their lives in the First World War in order that we can enjoy the freedoms we all take for granted today.” The Royal British Legion is encouraging golf clubs to fly a Poppy pin flag on the 16th hole of their club between now and the end of the Somme anniversary on 18th November. Special edition Somme 100 Poppy pin flags have been produced for golf clubs around the country to Fly the Flag in remembrance and tribute to all those golfers who lost their lives or were injured during the Battle of the Somme. The flag costs £25.00 including post and packing and is part of a toolkit, which also includes a pennant and souvenir 1916 sports edition ‘Legion Standard’. All profits go to support the Legion’s charitable activity. To request a toolkit and pin flag contact The Royal British Legion at britishlegion@shinecom.com or call 020 7100 7100 www.britishlegion.org.uk

Epping Husband and Wife Celebrate After Qualifying for Moroccan Grand Final

A

husband-and-wife pairing of amateur golfers from Epping is celebrating securing an expenses-paid trip of a lifetime to Morocco after qualifying for the mixed pairs grand final of the 2016 Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo. Leah Fitzgerald, 35, a 12-handicapper, and husband Peter, 45, who plays off 10 - who are members at Theydon Bois GC - finished first in the field at the Morocco Matchplay southern regional mixed pairs final, at Woodbury Park, in Devon, to earn a place in February's grand final to be played in Marrakech. Leah, a train driver by day, explained that they'd relied on each other to keep the partnership on track. She said: "We dovetailed really well: Peter blew out on a hole and I managed to par it; then immediately afterwards I blew out and he parred it. It's quite nerve-racking when you do it, but it dovetailed well. "Because we'd scored pretty well I thought there'd be other good scores out there too. So I was a little nervous. But it's amazing to qualify for Morocco - I can't quite believe it's happened. I've never been to North Africa so it's a whole new experience. It's also the first time we've entered this competition."

Managing director Peter added: "It's something you never think is going to happen. While you're out there, playing well, you're thinking ‘great, another two points'; and that was all we kept saying to ourselves: keep on racking up the two points. Hopefully, in the end, it works out, which it did today. "I kept saying to Leah that I'd love to come back and play this course on a still day, because I think you could score quite well around here. But it's a lovely course, a real challenge, especially with the wind. It seemed that whenever one of us missed out the other stepped in." HowDidiDo is Europe's largest golfing community, holding in excess of 21 million rounds of golf along with the handicaps, results and scores of more than 1,300,000 UK golf club members. Around 2,000 golf clubs and more than 460,000 golfers currently use the HowDidiDo system.

Swans Return to Work on Two More Holes at Saffron Walden

S

affron Walden Golf Club has taken further steps to ensure it retains its place as one of the best parkland courses in eastern England, by renovating two further holes under the auspices of Suffolk-based Swan Golf Designs (SGD). William Swan, the third generation of course architect at family-owned SGD, has been working alongside course manager Ian Cambridge and experienced shaper Paul Davies to make improvements to both the 14th and 15th. The 14th saw the renovation of one bunker at the front-right of the green and the replacement of the other with a grass run-off, which will gather approaches that are over-hit or dragged slightly left. In addition, the playing corridor has been widened to open up the mid-length parfour to a wider variety of strategies.

Work on the 15th involved the removal of two existing bunkers, the construction of two new bunkers, the renovation of one more and the construction of a new forward. The finishing works are being completed by the greenkeeping staff before the renovated holes are reopened for play. The work at Saffron Walden is just one of numerous renovation projects being led by SGD in the UK this autumn, with construction soon to begin at seven other golf clubs. Borne out of the successful golf course designs undertaken by Alex Swan with three-time British Open Champion Sir Henry Cotton and continued by Alex’s son, Howard, and grandson, William, SGD has established itself as a leader in the field. www.swangolfdesigns.com

PLAY PAR 3 GOLF TO SAVE SHOTS! I

f you want to save shots then the Short game is the quickest way. So a great, fun and time effective way to work on your short game is to play a short or par 3 course.

Get on the short course and you may be surprised how much you enjoy it!

SO WHY PLAY A SHORT COURSE? • You can focus on your shots from 120 yards and in- these are 70% of your shots anyway! • Simulate playing versus repeating the same shot over again as you may on the range • Great place for beinngers and juniors to learn how to play the game- The shorter holes are less intimidating than 400 yard plus holes. • Play best ball- If you hit a bad shot don't worry, learn from it and hit another. • Time Effective- You can play 9 holes on a short course in around an hour. • Fun alternative to the driving range- the range is not like the course, you need to make practice more like playing to transfer your range game to the course.. - 12 -

SHORT COURSE GAME ASSESSMENT If you want to get started and go 4 four shots lower I invite you to an initial Assessment on the short Acorns Course at Rivenhall Oaks. We will look at your game with a particular focus on the Short game and we will devise an improvement plan tailored to suit your individual requirements. By the end of your assessment you will understand which areas of your game you need to improve. Call 01376 510222 to book yours. Cost is £40

LEVERAGE MORE YARDS H

ave you ever wondered why the pros hit the ball so far with no effort in the swing. Well firstly, it isn’t quite so effortless as we might think but the top players utilise leverage in their swings to magnify the club head speed at impact. The major lever in the golf swing is the angle created through the left arm and the shaft (right arm for left-handed players). I like to relate to the left arm as the top lever and the shaft of the club as the bottom lever. Over the next few articles, I am going to help you build your lever system and hit the ball a greater distance. In this issue, we are going to load the lever system. Picture 1 shows me at set up, and I have highlighted my two lever system. Top lever, bottom lever and the freewheeling hinge upon the wrists. Our objective is to move the club to the top of the backswing smoothly and arrive with the wrist hinge fully loaded.

1

From the ball Picture 2 I have a preference that the initial movement of the swing is made by the body in the centre and the hands arms, and the clubs are very passive in this early movement; this not only delays the hinge but helps the swing plane. Start to hinge on Picture 3 some point between knee high and the right shoulder and ultimately arrive at the top of the swing with both levers intact an extended top lever and a good angle between the top lever and the shaft. Picture 4. Now we are loaded and ready to add yards to your shots, watch this space next issue to see what happens next. As a footnote, a big thankyou to those who attended my one-day clinic at Forrester Park more dates will be available next spring.

Have fun Gary

New Report Highlights Golf Club Secrets of Success T

he secrets of successfully running a golf club and attracting members are identified in a new report from England Golf. The results of the 2016 Golf Club Membership Questionnaire shows that 30% of clubs increased their membership this year and it highlights trends and ideas which are working. It recommends: A WARM WELCOME – a dedicated reception area, welcome packs and new members’ events are all winners. Catering for different needs – a range of flexible membership packages to suit different lifestyles can attract more members. A major trend over the past two years has been for clubs to offer junior, adult academy and trial memberships. REGULAR COMMUNICATION WITH MEMBERS AND VISITORS – this will help to retain as well as recruit members, but it’s important to use the right contact methods. One-third

of clubs are missing the opportunity to connect with visitors who could be potential members. MAKING MORE USE OF THE CLUB TO INCREASE INCOME – opportunities include weddings and conferences, but these must be balanced with the members’ needs. A coffee shop is a big plus for attracting members, as is a crèche or children’s play area. BECOMING PART OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY – using a social media strategy will help to connect with local schools, clubs and other organisations. Highlighting beginner coaching, academy membership and added value deals can help to increase membership. England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink said: “The report gives us a snapshot of the golfing landscape and highlights ideas and solutions which clubs are using to grow their membership and which work. I hope that by sharing this information we will encourage and inspire other clubs to become even more successful.” “In an age where consumers speak with their feet, ensuring that clubs deliver what golfers are demanding is critical to the future success of the game.” Findings for the last two years show that the average number of club members has stayed largely the same at 460 in 2016, compared to 466 in 2014. The number of members aged 65-plus increased by 13%. This year, 30% of clubs increased their memberships and their new members tend to play more frequently. Overall, there’s a slight decline in weekly golfers but an increase in those playing monthly. www.englandgolf.org

Thorpe Hall Golf Club Charity Day

T

he second Annual Thorpe Hall Golf Club Charity Day proved to be a roaring success as local teams came from far and wide to raise more than £50,000 for charity. The day which was in aid of Hattie’s Heroes raises money for Hattie, the young niece of Thorpe Hall GC Member and European Tour Professional Matt Southgate, who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Club Professional and organiser John Fryatt said “it was a brilliant day, that was enjoyed by

everyone.” Fryatt who was ably assisted in organising the day by Lady Captain Lisa Blackman, and Club Member Jon Andrews added “The weather was great and the course was excellent. We had a BBQ and live music after the competition, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.” After competitors had eaten, a charity auction featuring a trip to the US Masters and a Custom Made Scotty Cameron Putter to name a few of the many items raised over £40,000. Thorpe Hall GC donated the green fees from each player, which, when combined with other donations received should see the total raised exceed £50,000. The event was initially a four ball to raise funds with myself playing 18 holes alongside Matt and fellow Club Member and European Tour Professional Richard McEvoy, explained Fryatt. Matt is a great friends and it was great to help him and his family raise money for such great causes, we’re already looking forward to next years event! The winning team of Chris Search, Dan Capps, Mark Mitchell and Ben Coleman, each won a Scotty Cameron Putter, which were kindly donated by Titleist. Funds were also raised for the Captains Charity, Help for Heroes, the Lady Captains Charity, Leukaemia Care and the Elizabeth Foundation. - 18 -

Rare Golf Photo Find

A

rare collection of photographic slides showing the 1963 Open Championship at Royal Lytham has been unearthed at auction in Manchester. Offering a unique record of golf ’s oldest major at a time when American giants like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus began to compete, they were purchased by the www.oldgolfimages.com archive. “We were thrilled to obtain these historic images,” said Chief Valuation Expert, Dale Concannon. “We have one of the finest collections of early Open images anywhere but finding colour transparencies of this quality was a special find indeed.” The 60+ collection includes rare colour shots of Palmer practicing before his round, Nicklaus chatting with journalists and large crowds following the on-course action. “The fact they are in colour makes them doubly special,” said Dale. “Most golf photos of this period were shot in black and white. These pictures offer a genuine feel for what it must have been like to be there in 1963.” A specialist library supplying pre1970 images to golf magazines, book publishers and TV production companies throughout the world, Old Golf Images underwent a major

revamp twelve months ago when they became part of the Smashbang Media Group. Boasting over 150,000 golfing images dating back to the mid-18th Century, their website is now considered a “go to” library for historic golf photography. “Golf imagery is our passion,” said Mr Concannon. “We are constantly looking to add to our archive and spend much our time at auctions here and the United States hunting out rare photographs. These 1963 Open images will fit in perfectly.” www.oldgolfimages.com

PrideSports Expands PTS Evolution™ Family with New Hybrid Tee Model

P

rideSports, the world’s leading manufacturer of golf tees, has announced an exciting new addition to its popular Professional Tee System (PTS) Evolution™ family with the introduction of the PTS Evolution™ Hybrid. The newest member of PrideSports’ PTS, the PTS Evolution™ Hybrid, builds upon the success of the original PTS Evolution™ and now features a unique banded design for consistent teeing height and a thicker shank for added durability. Manufactured from an environmentally-friendly wood/plastic blend, the Evolution™ Hybrid is engineered with special lowresistance tips to create a more aerodynamic head which provides less friction between the ball and tee, resulting in longer drives. PTS Evolution™ Hybrid combines the success of Pride’s proprietary Professional Tee System of colour coded tees that allows for easy identification of optimum length, with an improved shank design for

longer lasting use. Available for both drivers and fairway woods in lengths of 2¾” and 3¼” depending on clubhead size, PTS Evolution™ Hybrid tees are constructed from an eco-friendly wood/plastic blend in order to last longer while providing less waste throughout the manufacturing process. The success of PrideSports’ PTS extends across a wide family of products, including the brand’s Titanium Strength and Micro Head tees, as well as being available in both plastic and wood. The system has quickly become a favourite of golf professionals around the world, establishing itself as the most used tee on the PGA Tour. Founded in 1930 when the father and son team of Fletcher and Gene Pride founded the Pride Manufacturing Company, Pride Golf Tee is the world’s largest manufacturer of wooden golf tees, thanks to a state-of-the-art technology that enables the Company to produce hundreds of millions of tees per year. www.pridegolftee.com

HAS GOLF BECOME

A POWER GAME? T

urn on the TV to watch some golf, and you can’t not be impressed - 350 yard drives, 180 yard 9 irons and scores of 8, 9 and even 10 under par for one round of golf. With no doubt the Professional Game has seemed to jump up a gear, making it even further from the reach of club golfers. In fact, how relevant is the male Professional Game to your everyday golfer? In my opinion it's not. My problem is that after watching golf at its highest level your Saturday morning golfer goes out and tries to play the same game as what they have seen on the TV - it’s never going to work out well! Let’s just take a moment to look at your Professional at the top of the sport. Most will have the following in their team: Swing coach, Mental coach, Club technician, Fitness/flexibility advisor, Dietary advisor and Manager To name but a few! Now couple this with the hours of practice from (normally) an extremely young age, and you can probably start to see where I’m going here. On the other side of the coin let’s take a look at John (our average club golfer) and what he does: Sits in an office from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Had a curry and a few beers on Friday night. Has not picked up a club since last weekend. Do I need to go on? He can’t perform evenly remotely close to the top players, but ‘he will

give it a good go’! So, this is where reality has to come into play, so how does John play better golf? Firstly, he needs to know and understand his limitations, play the game he can play and don't try to play a game he doesn’t own. Secondly, does he really need to hit the ball further? Unless they have lengthened his course from last weekend then the answer is no - it’s the same course. Thirdly, be realistic - how much better will you be at any skill if you don’t put any work into it? Simple, you are not going to get better. So, to answer the question about the Power Game - it has, massively. Golf is now all about power and distance - if you look at the Major winners over the last few years they will all (apart from one) be somewhere near the top on the driving distance list. But, this is the thing that’s golf at the highest level, championship courses are getting longer but members courses generally are not. Maybe by a yard here or there but not by much. Professional golf is a Power Game, at club level it is not. My exception to this is if you have a player who wants to play at the highest level but is currently at club level - the Power Game becomes their benchmark. When it comes to speed, you need: “As much speed to play at the level you want to play” Don’t forget the average driving distance for a male member in the U.K. is just over 200 yards.

I aim to keep the backswing shorter for more control, Figure 3, hence one of the requirements for the extra club. It is important to feel that we lead with the hands to maintain the shaft lean produced at set-up, Figure 4. The temptation is to try to “help the ball into the air with the hands this will not only produce a mis-timed strike but will also increase the loft of the club which will send the ball too high. As with the backswing a shorter follow through, Figure 5 promotes a lower ball flight with a well balanced controlled swing.

Channels Embarks on a New Chapter C

hannels, situated on the edge of the village of Little Waltham, is to undergo a restructure which will include investment into its wedding venues, hotel and restaurant operations, and open up the parkland estate to the local community. The 15th century 4 star Channels Lodge hotel and thriving Essex Barn wedding venue – considered by many to be the best in Essex, will become a more exclusive wedding location and continue to host private and corporate events, while plans are underway to make Channels Bar & Brasserie a destination restaurant with an expanded menu and private dining suites. However, after 42 years of trading, the golf club is no longer a viable concern which means that the 18 hole course will close on 31st March 2017 leaving the management of Channels focused on the parts of the business that have the potential to grow, be lasting and sustainable. Richard Stubbings of the Cliffords Group explained: “The closure of the course is sadly due to the decline in membership and high costs

involved in maintaining it. Unfortunately, the golf industry as a whole has seen a significant decline in memberships of more than 20% in recent years and it has badly affected clubs like ours. “Studies show that changing habits and attitudes have impacted on traditional golf clubs and many golfers now prefer the pay and play model to a membership club.” The 9 hole pay and play golf course and driving range at Little Channels will continue to provide golfing facilities for members and nonmembers within the surrounding area and will be upgraded over the next couple of years. “The aim for the future is to make our wedding venues more prestigious while integrating our other amenities, especially Channels Bar & Brasserie, into community life. In addition to this, we plan to lay on events for local residents to enjoy, like farmers markets, crafts and Christmas fairs, and beer and music festivals, which we believe will create interest in the area,” added Richard Stubbings www.channelsestate.co.uk

EDGA Will Help Young People Try Golf Thanks to Fundraising at Portugal Masters

T

he European Disabled Golf Association (EDGA) raised €22,500 as the European Tour’s Official Charity of the 2016 Portugal Masters, which finished on Sunday (23rd October). As the eventual champion Padraig Harrington battled it out with Andy Sullivan and other top players, EDGA enjoyed a unique profile throughout the week at Vilamoura courtesy of the European Tour. The EDGA team and volunteers were able to raise funds during the tournament which will be spent on a groundbreaking project to introduce children with disability to golf. The project is also supported by the Portuguese Tourism Board, and will effectively start during the EDGA Algarve Open in December at Vila Sol (December 1-3). Here, a group of coaches will be trained to deliver golf to children with disability, enabling them to work across Portugal, visiting rehabilitation centres and disability groups to share the fun of golf with youngsters and their families. EDGA is in an excellent position to support the expansion of initiatives which promote the development and delivery of golf for individuals

with impairment across Europe, working with 18 national golf federations. While its own Tournament Series has grown from four events in 2013 to 12 in 2016 with a truly international feel, EDGA members wish to support all golfers with disability at the grass roots of the game and encourage new players of all ages. The EDGA President said: “We would like to offer a huge thank you to the European Tour for selecting EDGA as Official Charity for the 2016 Portugal Masters. This opportunity enabled some wonderful volunteers to support us, and a challenge by the Million Dollar Hole-in-One during the Pro-Am helped raise €22,500, which can all be spent directly on introducing youngsters with disability to golf in Portugal. “The Portuguese Tourism Board, the European Tour, the Algarve Tourism Association and other organisations in this country are helping EDGA to reach more individuals with disability through this project. Our thanks go to all those involved. They will help us to improve sporting choices, social opportunities and confidence levels for children as they enjoy golf. This sport can be a wonderful lifetime activity and should be made available to everyone wherever possible.”

The

Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

CRONDON PARK BECOME 2016 JUBILEE CUP CHAMPIONS

The Crondon Park Team.

T

he Jubilee Cup Final was played at The Brentwood Golf Club on Sunday 25th September – and the end results was Crondon Park 7 points versus The Bentley’s 2. The Committee commiserates with Keith Clissold and his 2015 winners Bentley who could not secure a second running year as champions. Congratulations go to Andy Simmond’s Crondon team, long time runners in the play-offs these past few years, and at least they win to pole position. Full details of the Finals games are on the website and shown below for completeness. The following text comes from the winning captain’s pen, Andy Simmonds: On Sunday 25th September, 24 very nervous golfers teed up for the 2016 Jubilee Cup Final held at Brentwood GC. The format is 6 singles matches for players of 11.5 and above played off scratch and 3 - 44 -

pairs matches for players between 16.5 and 24 playing 4 Ball Better Ball off 90% handicap difference. The pairs started from the 1st tee and the singles from the 10th tee. The match started tentatively for Crondon with all the matches very tight through the opening holes, in fact after 9 holes the overall match score was very evenly balanced. As the games got into their back 9 the match started to turn in Crondon’s favour with the singles matches leading the charge. The The Bentley Team. spectators started to congregate around the 7th green for the end of the singles matches giving them a view of what was happening on the 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th greens, although in the end no games made the 9th (last hole for the singles). First to score a point was Tony Efreme winning 4 & 2 on the 7th, next in was Dean Allen calmly strolling down the 7th fairway with a 4 & 3 win in the bag. Attention then turned to the 5th green with Brian English, who looks so serious even when he is winning. Two balls were on the green and the last we had heard Brian was 1 up, but a couple of putts later they shook hands and we had another point, 3 points in the bag now. The last 2 singles were a way behind so attention turned to the pairs - taking the buggy to the other side of the course we found the first pair of Lewis Wootton and Chris Collen on the 16th tee 2 up and our second pair of Dennis (Grandad) Murphy and Ian Rattray going dormie 3 after 15 holes. Chris and Lewis soon followed suit by winning the 16th and were now dormie 2. Calculators were now out and with 3 points secured and the pairs having a minimum of 1 point we needed another win to bring the trophy home. Again we congregated around the 5th Green to wait for Peter Ballard who was playing the Order of Merit leader from Bentley, the grin on his face said it all as he halved the hole for a 3 & 2 win and the Jubilee Cup was Crondons! Back to the pairs and we saw Lewis, Chris, Dennis and Ian all walking in, with 2&1 and 3&2 wins respectively. That only left 2 singles and 1 pairs match on the course. Dave Cox was all square on his last hole and in pole position to win it but he sportingly shook hands with his opponent for an agreed half. Peter Green was on his 16th hole and also all square, once again they shook hands for an agreed half. With the score now at 7 - 1 we unfortunately suffered a defeat in the last pairs match, with Andy Heelis and Phil Rees going down 3&2 leaving the final score CRONDON PARK 7 BENTLEY 2. What a fantastic day for Crondon Park after being losing Semi Finalists for the previous 3 years it was finally their turn to bring home the Jubilee Cup. To conclude, Andy also wishes to go on once again with thanks to the Committee of the competition for organising such a great competition! The spirit and sportsmanship from all teams Crondon have played has been fantastic, thanks also to runner up Keith and his team for a great final and we wish them all the best for next year. This spirit is shown throughout the competition, Singles Order and we regularly hear feedback from Jubilee of Merit winner captains and their players lauding the format Brian English. and the competition overall. - 45 -

Congratulations to Chris Collen who becomes the pairs runner up, and who was only beaten by four hole difference points by his team mate Lewis Wootton. Well done guys. As you may know, the Jubilee Cup is open to ALL Essex clubs, and we seek to make the competition bigger and better every year – I am pleased to see some great new clubs entering the competition, such as Braintree Golf Club who has entered for the first time in 2017. Sad news must be flagged in that we have also had a withdrawal from a great supporter of ours, Channels Golf Club, due to the circumstances at the club. Jiri Zuska was the overall winner and the first ever Czech champion of the Series, closing out with a final round of 70. An amazing new course record of 64 was achieved by 17 year old Frankie Capan from Minnesota, whose round included 9 birdies and led to Capan finishing joint 2nd overall. Recognised as Britain’s most successful golfer, having won 6 majors, Sir Nick shared his knowledge from over 35 years of competing at the highest level by giving clinics to the young players during the week. He also delighted a gathering of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club members when he staged a very entertaining hour long masterclass for them at the Driving Range. The members had been invited as a thank you from the Club for volunteering as marshals at recent international events held at the award-winning venue.

Tom Williams, the Sports Presenter at BBC Look East TV, included the masterclass and other action from the event in his news report, and Sir Nick was also interviewed via a live feed with the studio during the evening news broadcast, giving the event nearly 5 minutes of air time. The event will also be broadcasted in the USA through various sports channels. A Gala Dinner with prize giving and an enlightening Q & A session with Sir Nick and his son Matthew, was held to celebrate the event’s 20th anniversary in the hotel’s stunning Devora Suite. Guests at the dinner included directors from the PGA, European Tour and Ladies European Tour Access Series. Sir Nick said, “I want to extend our thanks to all our supporters who make this possible for these young golfers. It was great for the players to have the PGA on board this week. EG South Eastern Group Colts League Final

ESSEX v HAMPSHIRE Seaford Golf Club – Sunday 9th October 2016 The league final took place at Seaford Golf Club on Sunday 9th October. It was the fourth time in the last six years that these two Counties have met. Last year the match was halved thereby each County holding the trophy for six months. Seaford, a course with beautiful views of the sea and the massive vine yard (the largest in the UK) was in excellent condition with very large but demanding greens. Both Counties fielded extremely strong teams. The morning foursomes were tightly contested and had looked to be level at two each, but the third Hampshire pair, having been down, managed to pull it to all square leaving a Foursomes result of Hampshire 2½ - Essex 1½ Essex started the afternoon singles well. It looked so good on paper. At one stage they were up in six of the eight matches. George Leversuch had an outstanding early win of 7&5 followed quickly by Will Percival with a 5&3. Hampshire had won or were well up in matches 1, 7 & 8.Two more wins came from Brandon Meads 3&1 and Callum Pipe 2 up. A fifth win was all that was required, from the last game out, for Essex to win the match or an all square to halve it.The Hampshire player in the fourth match came from two down to birdie the last three holes. Ouch! Singles result 4 – 4. Overall total - Essex 5½ Hampshire 6½ and the Trophy. Essex were represented by players from seven clubs:-

Congratulations to all players, you were a credit to your County, and a very sincere ‘Thank You’ to Seaford Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and to their members for allowing us to use their Sunday tee times.Next year the Colts will be playing against Hertfordshire & Kent. One game at home and one away against each County. No triangular matches. Another change has been an alteration to the age range. It will be 18 to under 26 – no juniors allowed.

MULLIS TROPHY Played at Brentwood Golf Club on Sunday 2 October 2016 The Mullis Trophy was first played for in 1931, and is traditionally the final competition of the season. The morning started with a cool breeze but the sun was out and as 40 teams representing 30 Clubs set off to play 18 holes in a fourball betterball stableford format, the temperature increased to what was a pleasant 18 degrees for most of the day.The golf however, was a little hotter for the majority. First group in was Brentwood Golf Club's very own Joe Tatam (3) and Gavin Wright (4) totalling a great score of 44 points.Vice Captain of Brentwood Golf Club, Andy Massey (7) was to return shortly after, with his partner Charlie Burke (3), also with a very respectful 40 points. From the early scores posted by the home club representatives it was set to be a great days competition. Stock Brook Manor returned with a score of 45 points, with Martin Paterson (12) & Richard Higgins (10) obviously having both playing very well as they lost a shot each with the 90% rule in play. This was not the only fantastic performance of the day where handicap adjustments were made. Gary Dennis (16) & Michael Broomes (16) were both above the maximum limit of 18 handicap, therefore losing a combined total of 4 shots before the 90% was deducted, they returned with a fantastic score of 45 points, dove-tailing exceptionally well.Their 22 point back nine was not quite enough, unluckily missing out on second place by countback to Paterson & Higgins' back nine of 23 points. The score that won the Mullis Trophy for 2016 was that of Three Rivers' David Harding (11) & William White (8), both players were scoring on every hole, making it easier for one of the pair to attack, hence the fabulous score of 48 points. Upon congratulating the pair from Three Rivers Golf Club,William said, 'It was just one of those days, we both played well and gave one another a chance on every hole.' Congratulations to David and William, 2016 Mullis Trophy Champions. Our thanks go to Brentwood Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and beautifully presented course. - 52 -

A Focus on Club Support Stronger Clubs and More Golfers

H

i fellow Essex golfers, friends and golfing community. This is my first feature which will appear as a regular spot. I am the England Golf Development Officer in Essex and work with a local organisation – Essex Golf Development Group. Collectively we represent the Essex Golf Union, Essex Ladies County Golf Association and the Essex Professional Golfers Association. Our entire focus is to grow golf in Essex. Personally, I started playing golf in the mid90’s following a knee injury, bringing my hockey aspirations to an early end. I spent an enjoyable few years at The Essex G&CC learning the game and I am now a member at Colchester GC. I am actively involved in the club and play off 12. I have been our County Development Officer for 8 years, 4 of those as part time, but my role is now full time, and this has allowed me to embrace more initiatives, support more clubs, facilitate more links and strengthen my network in the county, not just in golf but other stakeholders who support sport and promoting active lives at local, county and national level. I am going to dedicate my pages to helping clubs and golfers better understand industry trends, how to create a stronger golf club and how to attract more people into golf. One of the single largest challenges facing many clubs and its members, is not understanding the need for change to future

proof their club, and halt the decline in membership and revenues. I can help unpeel the layers and support a club to take one small step at a time, to build a stronger club to survive and thrive in a challenging marketplace. We are also faced with a tough economic climate and the need to embrace the internet and social media, which now has such an impact on our day to day lives. I’m going to kick off with sharing a new easy view report, based on the 2016 Club Membership Survey – hopefully this is thought provoking. To download a copy, please see pinned link @golfessex or on Essex Golf Development Group Facebook page. All Club Managers/Secretaries will receive a hard copy during November. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like a club visit/meeting.

open for boys and girls to join this active section. The free weekly coaching sessions are well attended and will continue. The Junior Organizer, Lorrie Austin was particularly pleased with the Team, as although due to availability, they did not progress in the county’s Youth Shield they did beat Clacton who lost to Chelmsford in the final. They also won the Jason Moss Trophy against five other clubs held at Clacton. Holly Collins was first in the Improvers at the Autumn Meeting of the Essex Ladies’ County Golf Association with a points score of nineteen. The final of the Junior Braiswick produced a tight match with Dan Nicholls (5) taking on Sam Jackson (17). Jackson having a 12 shot advantage was always going to be difficult to beat and so it proved when the match finished on the 16th. Austin in summing up the year thanked the professionals, Mark Baker and Chris Cutchie for their help along with members Keith Newnham,

t has been a successful season for Colchester Golf Club’s Junior Section, which culminated in a presentation evening at the Braiswick Club. The section now has four members in Category One with Dan Nicholls, Louisa Storey and Harry Hills all joining Cai James with handicaps of five or less. James has had another good year representing Essex U16’s along with the Welsh U16’s and winning the Club Championship en-route. Nicholls, won the Club Junior Championship. Ben Regan won the Spring Trophy and Sam Jackson the Elmstead KO Cup, defeating his brother Joe in the final. Louisa Storey, the Junior captain for 2017, won the Centenary Scratch Medal and got into the final of the County’s Hunter Foursomes. Also receiving a County honour was Holly Collins who was first in the Improvers at the Autumn Meeting of the Essex Ladies’ County Golf Association with a points score of nineteen. The club is regularly recruiting more juniors and the books are wide Sam Jackson with the Captain, Stewart Ness. - 56 -

Russell Storey and Mike Kettle. He particularly mentioned Harry Hills who as Junior Captain for 2016 gave 100% enthusiasm and effort during his year. Linda Freeman, playing off 20, won the Ladies Monthly medal competition. Her three under par 69 nett just put her ahead off Claire Croger (24) who returned 70 nett. Philippa Davies (36) was next past the post with a 72and Annie Johnston (14) took fourth place with 73 nett. A hole in one on a 382 yard par four? Impossible many may say, but Joe Williams (5) did it on the 5th during the winter leagues last weekend. The codicil however was that due to drainage works on the main green there was a temporary green set up short of the normal main green but he holed out, with a three wood, from 265 yards. Some Shot.

Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Ladies in the Swing

Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club Lady Captain Gilly Cullen (6th from right) surrounded by the Ladies who played in the Clacton Scramble.

O

n Sunday afternoon Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Ladies held the second ‘Clacton Scramble’ over 6 holes off the Blue tees in 5 groups for the Ladies who have joined the club this year and are totally new to golf. Each group had an experienced player with them to explain some of the more simple rules, the etiquette of golf and how to keep the game moving. It is very encouraging to see our new ladies improving as the weeks go by; we now need to encourage them to play the full 18 holes, to get 3 cards in so they can have a Handicap, which will enable them to play in our weekly competitions and continue their improvement and enjoyment of the game. The other most important thing to mention, is their enthusiasm; we all know how hard golf can be when you first start to play golf, whether it is in a lesson or out on the course. When we finished today after 6 holes, all the Ladies said they had enjoyed the game and would have liked to carry on, which is very encouraging. Thank you again to Clacton PGA Professional Sam Teer for his involvement, encouragement and advice to our ladies.

Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s men played TopDogs 2 on Sunday morning. Following the success of its high-performance line of trolleys in 2016 – including the half-amillion-selling Freeway range – the pioneering brand will introduce the latest GPS technology in a super-intelligent digital screen to provide golfers with distance measurements to pin positions and various hazards. “We’re really excited about what the integrated GPS technology will offer golfers in 2017, but we can’t reveal too much about the new model just yet, other than the fact the trolley has all the features of the award-winning Freeway range and a fully integrated high-performance GPS,” said PowaKaddy CEO David Catford. “A serious amount of time, effort and investment has gone into the production of this trolley to make sure it performs to the very highest standards. Golfers will be able to manage their game from their trolley handle – a landmark moment for the electric trolley industry.” As part of PowaKaddy’s comprehensive range in 2017, the new trolley will feature a number of the brand’s leading technologies, including the sleek and compact Plug’n’Play™ battery system that avoids any fiddly wires or connectors. It will also boast re-engineered lithium-ion battery technology, which ensures PowaKaddy Lithium delivers 20% more staying power. More information on the new PowaKaddy trolley will be released in 2017. www.PowaKaddy.co.uk

rying to judge the right number of the right size golf gloves can be a nightmare when stocking up for the season. Trying to pack them back in the cover once an enthusiastic XL has tried to cram his hand in an M/L is another problem all together! So when ZOOM gloves, the latest innovation from BIG MAX owners Golftech, hits Professionals Shops this year, every retailer can breathe easy knowing they can get every customer the right glove for their game, first time every time. While ZOOM gloves all feature the brand’s core technology, they come in three distinct designs. ZOOM TOUR features premium cabretta leather, delivering the instant feedback and superb feel favoured by many better players.
