Strachen and Daglish Go Alda Way for Charity at La Manga Club

S

cotland football legends Gordon Strachan and Kenny Dalglish were among the top names joining in the fun at La Manga Club as they helped the famous Spanish resort raise a further €20,000 for under-privileged children in South America this month. Scotland manager Strachan and ex-Liverpool and Celtic star Dalglish teamed up with other leading figures from the world of sport, dignitaries and guests to help the award-winning venue match the total it raised for the Alda Foundation – which helps to educate poor youngsters in

Paraguay – in 2016. The pair were on hand to offer advice and assist with a junior football coaching session as part of their roles as ambassadors for La Manga Club during a week of fundraising activities at the resort in Murcia, south-east Spain. Taking place from July 29 to August 4, the Alda Charity Week – which featured cloudless skies and temperatures of 40-plus degrees throughout – also offered the chance to take part in tennis and golf family fun days.

Three Rivers Golf Club T

wo of our ladies Sharon Warrington and Jo Stentiford entered the Daily Mail Foursomes competition this year and had an excellent run of wins to reach round 6 of the competition. This included a thrilling play off in round 5 against Manor of Groves ( Hertfordshire) with Sharon and Jo winning at the 22nd hole. They had both played in the Club Championships the day before which meant they played 58 holes in 41 hours! They finally lost their bid for a place in the finals weekend in a close match with Crondon Park in Sharon and Jo with Bob Wilson. Are you realistic as to how far you hit the golf ball

?

F

rom my experience the majority of club golfers are not and I honestly do believe this hurts their game. In my opinion too many golfers live off that one drive they hit about a year ago that went 250yds – but the rest of the time it goes around 200yds maximum. Perhaps the 250yd shot was something to do with being down wind and a hard fairway? This really hit home to me a few days ago when I had an extremely successful Senior Tour Player come up for a check up. On his last visit he was easily pitching his driver out the back of the Hylands range, on the check up he was a good 25yds short. When he looked at the data his comment was that the wind and temperature had changed so he was pleased with the result even though the shot was shorter – he was expecting the ball to go shorter due to the conditions. How many club golfers would go to the range even thinking about the weather on their last visit as a comparison? Well, not as many as you think as every October/November I always have a influx of golfers stating that their drivers no longer work (for various reasons) as they are now 30yds behind where they were a few weeks ago. Maybe something to do with the fairways softening up

and the temperature dropping? You only need to know one persons game in golf and that is your own, if your drive goes 190yds play with it, if your 7 iron flies 140yds just go with it – don’t come up short every time because you thought you hit it 160yds. This is why a few balls on the range before you play always works as it helps you to get an idea of how far the flies on that day – not the last time you played. My visit to Quail Hollow was great fun and my lasting memory will be Dustin Johnson and how he practiced. This is a player who is known for his distance (next month I’m going to discuss how these guys are getting longer) but he spent most of his practice time on wedges. If you think about it there are a lot of holes he will be hitting wedge as a 2nd shot so this makes perfect sense. But here’s the best bit – before every tournament round he spent 30 to 45 minutes hitting wedges dialling in his distances for that day – obviously the conditions change the distance the ball flies so he needs to get a feel for distances on the day. He uses technology to check the yardage he hits it and attaches the feel of the swing to the distance. Simple, but I’m sure you will agree very effective. Play Well!!

LOOKBACK

DON’T N

o matter how well you read the line, you still have to roll the ball at the right pace. The irony of this is you already possess the ability to judge distance, you just may not realise it. Firstly try this simple experiment as I am doing in Picture 1, bowl some balls underhand towards the hole; you will be amazed how good you are at judging the distance to the hole. The reason you are able to do this is you are using your eyesight to send the messages to your brain of how hard to roll the ball, your brain then translates and relates this information to your arm to roll the ball to the intended target. The practical application for this is shown in Picture 2 where I am preparing to putt the ball

by having my practice swing looking at the hole. This is building up a sense of feel rather like the bowling I did earlier. Now as I address the ball in Picture 3 and align my putter to the aim line I have drawn on top of the ball I never look back at the target just trust to replicate the feel of the stroke I have built up in the practice strokes. Why not join me in the sunshine at one of my coaching holidays, at the delightful Penina Resort now in their 21st year. 14th to the 21st April or 28th of April to the 5th of May. Stoke by Nayland Welcome a New Coach

S

toke by Nayland Golf Club have been very pleased to welcome a new coach, Danielle Anderson on to their team. Dani joined Stoke in November 2016 from Wentworth Golf Club and has since passed her final PGA examination to become a fully qualified professional. But where did it all begin? Dani started to play golf, as a 12 year old, at Garon Park in Essex and she went on to play Essex County golf at Junior and Senior level. Her first link with Stoke by Nayland was when she joined the academy at 17 on a two year course. After working in Spain and playing as an amateur Dani joined Wentworth and she stayed there for five years. But Dani wanted a new challenge and a chance to put some of her ideas of how to teach golf into practice. She was given this chance by Roly Hitchcock, the Head Professional at Stoke by Nayland . Dani, with her infectious and enthusiastic personality, has been an instant success with all the members. Her coaching programmes include weekly sessions for the Senior Men, monthly

group lessons and work with the Juniors. She has introduced 50 new juniors to Stoke of which 30 attend weekly coaching or use the range and courses. Individual lessons on all aspects of golf can also be booked and several members of the Ladies Section have taken advantage of Dani’s coaching skills. It is the aim of every golf club in the country to get more people, of all ages, playing golf. This is where Dani comes into her own with her innovative teaching methods. It is not unusual to see plastic paddling pools at the driving range or on the putting green. Dani makes golf fun. The Professionals at Stoke by Nayland have a full programme of summer golf including running day camps for young players, Saturday and Thursday evening golf. To get more ladies playing golf Dani runs Monday morning coaching sessions ‘Get into Golf ’ which are proving to be popular and who could resist a ‘Nine and Wine’ golf lesson. To find out more about what Dani and the other Professionals do at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club call them on 01206 265812 or email golfcoaching@stokebynayland.com

Something Unique Happened at Belhus Park Golf Club in August

B

elhus Park Golf Club entered two teams in the NAPGC Simens Bowl better ball pair’s competition and following some considerable battles by both sides, both the A & B teams met in the regional final of the competition at Belhus Park. Following a momentous battle, the A team prevailed by 177 points to 154 to qualify for the national final at Frilford Heath GC in Oxfordshire. Mr Roy Atkins, incumbent captain at Belhus

GC, is overwhelmed that both teams did so well, thus, putting Belhus GC on the golfing map. The two team captain’s Mr Dave Saunders (A team) and Mr Dean Pamenter would like to both applaud and thank their respective teams for a supreme effort in beating off all comers in the previous rounds and for showing great sportsmanship and tenacity throughout the competition so far. Good luck to the A team in the national final on September 9th.

New Record Set at Romford Golf Club Championship Weekend

T

he Club Championships were held at Romford Golf Club on the 5th and 6th of August, and what a fantastic weekend it was. New Club Champion, Harrison Ellis eagled the last to break the 20 year tournament record (previously held by Brett Bishop with 137) shooting 68 + 68 = 136 to win by 5 from Tony Ames and Jack Dobson 141. Silver Winner Joe Coogan 75 + 82 = 157 won by 1 from Chris Blakebrough 158, and the Bronze title was won by Tom Garner 84 + 81 = 165 from Craig Harvey 166. The Ladies’ club champion title went to the current champion, Karen Miles 83 with Annie Hazell winning the Handicap Salver with a net 74. The weekend finished with a 200 strong family BBQ and presentation evening. Club Captain Michael Miles said: “As captain of Romford Golf Club, this has been a fantastic weekend of golf. We had so many members taking part at all levels making the weekend lots of fun. A massive highlight for me personally was presenting our new club champion, Harrison Ellis, with his trophy in front of over 200 members and their wonderful guests. As Captain, being present when Harrison achieved this new club record I felt so proud and privileged to be involved and I’m sure this record will stand for many years to come.”

Well Done Ben and Dean

C

rondon Park held their Club Championship, and a fine day it turned out to be. It was a long day in the field for all the 34 competitors playing 36 holes. Thankfully the weather was kind, following the heavy rain the previous day apart from the blustery wind which made the scoring difficult. Both the scratch and handicap competitions were closely fought affairs with Glynn Williams winning the scratch championship with a score of 158, just one clear of last year’s winner Colin McCreary. Ben Clarke (playing off 11) won the Handicap Championship with a net 142, just one clear of Dean Allan (10) who had a net 67 in the afternoon.

Putting Success

WHY GOOD LEADS TO

T

he greatest golfer of all time in my opinion said the following quote; “No matter your scoring goals, you can attain them faster by improving your putting.” – Jack Nicklaus. Well if this statement is true in what it indicates which I believe is the truth then this following article certainly demonstrates it. In April 2015, Rebecca Earl came to see me. She was only 15 and struggling with her putting. That year she won a number of events including a WPGA event at South Herts as an Amateur and consequently played at Stoke By Nayland in a LET Access event. This year she has won The Double in Hertfordshire of winning ‘The Ladies County Championship’ and ‘Girls County Championship’ and very recently finished T12 in The English Women’s Championships at Woodhall Spa with 2 of the 4 rounds under par.

Rebecca Earl.

I started working with Elliott Fullalove via the internet initially in April 2016. He had sent me a message via twitter and sent me some video of his putting stroke whilst in Florida at College. In the May he had finished 3rd in the American College Tournament the NJCAA with all 4 rounds under par. August this year and he wins The Scratch Challenge Bowl at Boyce Hill with both rounds under par (67-64) -5 to win by 4 shots. It proves that technology can help. Todd Clements initially started his golf with me in 2008. In October 2012 with a handicap of 5 and not putting well he came back to see me. Over the years we have worked hard on his complete strategy to Putting with many close finishes in

County and National events. On August 6th he landed one of the biggest victories any Amateur golfer could by Winning ‘The English Amateur Championship’. I watched The Final and the putter got hot on the last 8 holes with an approximate holed footage of 90ft with a great chip in as well. He also led ‘The Brabazon Trophy’ in May in the 1st round with a course record 66 at Woodhall Spa. Plays off +4 and his World Amateur Golf Ranking is 104. They have all come to see me at my Putting Studio at The Essex Golf and Country Club utilising ‘The Zen Green Stage’ as seen on Sky Sports Open Zone. It has helped them understand that through improving their Routine, Set-Up, Putting Stroke and Green Reading, they can attain their scoring goals and crucially win under pressure knowing they can trust their Putting to finish off the job on every hole. I am immensely proud of Rebecca, Elliott and Todd for their accomplishments and also grateful to every other Amateur or Professional who has come to see me to improve ‘The Game within The Game’. Next month I will show one of the ingredients that made Jack Nicklaus a great putter and how this could add to your total strategy to Putting!

Gary the Champion O

n Sunday 6th August in almost perfect conditions, 100 competitors took part in the Clacton-on-Sea Club Golf Club annual Club Championship. There were five trophies up for grabs; Club Champion off scratch – all ; Gold Division playing for the Locke Trophy handicaps of 7 and under; Silver Division playing for the Bruce Trophy handicaps of 8 – 12; Bronze division 1 playing for the Raybould Trophy for handicaps of 13 to 18 and the Bronze 2 Division playing for the Petts Trophy for handicaps of 19 to 28: All divisions play 36 holes except the Bronze 2: After the first 18 holes, Jiwan Rai with a gross 72 had a two stroke lead going into the afternoon session, 3 players were two shots behind, 2016 Champion Nick Tedder-Ward, Billy Leonard and Gary Lee all with gross 74’s. The afternoon heat beat down and it looks like it took its toll, Rai, Tedder-Ward and Leonard all faded but playing through with a gross 71 to add to his morning 74 Gary Lee stood tall to claim the coveted Club Champion title with a combined gross score of 145. There was asome consolation for Billy Leonard who took the Gold

Division title, with Dave Reid taking the Silver, Barry Joyce the Bronze 1 and Perry Bettis the Bronze 2. From everyone at Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club well done Gary Lee and all of the other winners!

olne Valley Golf Club ladies held their 2017 guest day in August. The event was brilliantly supported with 25 pairs competing for the honours however it was Amanda Rollins and guest Lyn Bewley who took the spoils with 45 points. Dianne Jeggo and her guest Rosemary Kerr were 2nd with 43 points whilst 3rd spot was taken by Sue Drysdale and Lorna Woodroffe with 40 points. The top team of 4 prize went to Diane Jeggo, Rosemary Kerr, Ruth Finch and Bridget Couch.

Amanda Rollins – right, and Lyn Bewley – left receive prizes from Lady Captain Lesley Knight middle.

Sutton was one of two players representing Colchester Golf Club and scored thirty-nine points, which was enough to give him a clear twoshot victory over a field representing other Essex clubs. From his eight handicap, Sutton’s first nine was just two over par, then effectively paring the 16th, he then had a bogey and a double bogey but steadied himself and parred the 18th to secure his win. Sutton’s score was two ahead of Paul Neale (11) of Colne Valley. The Club had more joy in County competitions when the Youth Shield Scratch team progressed to the final on Sunday 17th September after beating The Warren four matches to one. They will play Chelmsford in the final. Taking the tie four matches to one the team had wins by Josh Coleman (4&3), Harry Hills (2&1), Max Maynard (5&4) and Joe Jackson (6&5) with surprisingly Dan Nicholls going down 4&2.

The Perfect Putting Pie - 36 -

T

his could be the trickiest photo I have had to take! But it was inspired by food naturally… I am passionate about improving golfers in all areas of the game and understand how images can assist providing the important visual without bombarding the technical elements. Putting is a complex skill as the margins are very small, however there are numerous styles on both the Ladies & Men’s Tour which are very successful. There is no one set method which applies to all golfers making the coaching element of putting such a challenge and a rewarding area of the game. I have written a number of articles based around putting for the Essex Golfer but during a lesson a few days ago decided to share something which really helped my client. If you are a player who prefers to tilt more from the hips at address allowing the arms to hang more vertically at address then the “pie” analogy will work for you. This visual of balancing the pie on your neck will allow your eyeline to be towards the ground at address. I believe this assists a player to see the line of the putt when swivelling the head to the left to check alignment and target (Right handed golfer). This position helps to maintain the body alignment as the upper body does not need to move from its set up position again to view the target and hole prior to making the stroke. I am not expecting you all to start baking but visualise balancing your Sunday dessert on the back of your neck without disappointing your guests.

Basildon Golfers Qualify for National Final Shaun Holdin.

Ben Tobin.

B

asildon golfers Ben Tobin and Shaun Holding have taken the honours at the regional qualifier of the American Golf 9 Hole Championship this week. Playing on their home course, the Basildon Golf Club members finished first and second and now progress to the national final at Ryder Cup venue The Belfry, in September, where they will battle it out for the title of best 9 Hole golfer in the U.K Played across the back 9 of the course, the qualifier was a tight affair as both players took advantage of their local knowledge to the lead the field. Both players pushed each other to very impressive 9 hole scores with Tobin taking the

win with 21 points. This was particularly impressive as Tobin plays off a handicap of +1 and shot a 9 hole round of 4 under par. Holding pushed him all the way however, playing some very solid golf to come in with a 9 hole score of 20. Both golfers will now join qualifiers from all over the UK and Ireland in front of Sky Sports’ cameras at the Belfry Grand Final where they will compete across two days to be crowned American Golf 9 Hole Individual Champions. This win also puts them in contention for the Tournament of Champions in Mauritius, should they succeed at the iconic Midland venue.

ver 50 past and present Lady Captains from 24 clubs across the county travelled to Stoke by Nayland in mid-August for the Society of Lady Captains 3rd Summer Meeting. After the customary bacon rolls the ladies teed off on the Gainsborough course for their 4BBB competition off full handicap with drawn partners. The undulating terrain and lakes presented a real challenge for the ladies, but as is often the case, many of the scores were high with 7 pairs scoring 40 points and above. Thanks to Stoke by Nayland for allowing us to use their lovely venue and to Lady Captain Anne Hemmings who was a wonderful host and even had to play at the last minute due to odd numbers. Thanks also to Lesley Garnet for all her help with

the event and to her husband for helping with all the results. The meeting was a very friendly affair, and the day finished with a lovely meal which included delicious fresh local fruit grown by the Peake family business. The prizes were presented by Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society) & Anne Hemmings (Lady Captain of Stoke by Nayland). In 3rd place ocb with 42 points were Sue Bartrum (Romford) & Dot Greaves (Forrester Park). 2nd place with 43 points went to Catherine Grief (Crondon Park) & Janice Hamilton (The Warren). In first place with a fantastic score of 47 points, winning the Friendship Salver were Tricia Ainsbury (The Burstead) and Viggi Thompson (Bunsay Downs).

The Greene King Trophy at Five Lakes N

inety Six senior golfers from six local participating clubs contested this year’s Greene King Senior Pairs Trophy at the Crowne Plaza Colchester Five Lakes Golf Club. This prestigious event, again benefitting from the very generous and supportive sponsorship of Greene King Brewery of Bury St Edmunds, brought together teams from Braintree, Burnham on Crouch, Colchester, Frinton, Maldon and Five Lakes who each fielded 8 pairs of senior players in a four-ball better ball Stableford format, challenging for the coveted Greene King Trophy. The winner is the Club that accumulates the highest number of points from its team members. In warm overcast conditions, but with a challenging breeze, high scoring was not guaranteed but a dozen pairs managed to rack up scores of 40 points and better with Burnham’s Stephen Hull and John Johnson returning the day’s best pair score of 46 points. Last year’s winners, Colchester, set an early target with three pairs scoring at least 40 points with Jim Wilkinson and late replacement Bob Potter returning 42 points, to make a notable contribution to their team’s total of 304 points. This total however was not enough for Colchester to retain the Trophy, being surpassed at a late stage

by the winning host club, Five Lakes, with a total of 311 points. Significant contributions were made by five pairs with plus 40 point better ball scores for the home team with the pairs of Tony Tyler and Danny Murtagh and Stuart Kempster and David Parkins being particularly impressive with returns of 44 and 43 points respectively. At the presentation meal after the competition, provided by the Crowne Plaza Resort, Five Lakes Seniors Captain Mick Phillis welcomed all players and helpers and congratulated and presented prizes to the winners. He acknowledged the efforts of the Five Lakes management and ground staff in presenting the facilities to a high standard and thanked Messrs Greene King for its generous and continued support for this important local golfing event. CLIFFORD’S TROPHY

W

arley Park Golf Club was the venue for this year’s Clifford’s Trophy following the closing of long term host club, Channels Golf Club. Warley Park was presented in great condition and the weather was kind for the majority of the day, all be it a little windy, the rain stayed away despite grey skies throughout the day with the occasional burst of sunshine, leading to fluctuating temperatures and tricky conditions. The conditions were not the only concern as for competitors as an accident on the A12 led to a delayed start and some not making it to the event on time. Despite all of this, Will Boniface of Five Lakes arrived with just minutes to prepare, run to the first tee and managed to open with a joint course record of 64 (-7) in the morning. Narrowly missing his 63 by missing a putt on 18 that understandably had gained some interest from spectators. The next best was four shots back on 68 (-3), these included Arron Edwards-Hill (Chelmsford), Ryan Cox (Warley Park) and Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park). Joshua Read (Three Rivers) was sat in 5th place on his own with an opening 69. Some impressive morning rounds set up the afternoon for a fantastic climax. The competitors were all grateful for a slight delay, offering most, more time to prepare - 43 -

for the afternoon round. Many had assumed it was now a one-horse race, but we all know how cruel golf can be at times. The quality of golf in the afternoon did not disappoint either. A further 9 players breaking par in the afternoon saw the field tighten slightly. So much so that level par for the 36 holes could only ensure a 7th place finish. Our County Champion Curtis Knipes (Abridge) was one of those sat on Level Par for the two rounds. Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park) was one better with Ben Wyatt (The Rayleigh Club) finishing on 140 (-2) for the day. Joshua Read (Three Rivers) nearly matched his two under par morning round of 69 but narrowly missing out for a 70, leaving him on 139 (-2) for the day, taking 4th place. Ryan Cox’s (Warley Park) pair of 68’s earned him 3rd place on his own with 136 (-6). Will Boniface’s 64 in the morning was always going to be tough to match, his level par round of 71 in the afternoon meant he finished the day on 135 (-7), a very good score that normally would have been good Will Boniface. enough to lift the Clifford’s Trophy. However, the 68 in the morning was improved on by one shot by Arron Edwards-Hill, managing a 67 in the afternoon resulted in matching Boniface’s 135 total. Arron may be thankful that Counback is the deciding factor in the Clifford’s Trophy. The Club Captain helped present the prizes and Arron made reference to the quality of the way the course was presented as well as thanking the Essex Golf Union and Warley Park for organising the event. The Essex Golf Union also paid their thanks to Warley Park in hosting the competition and presenting the venue in such fine condition, going on to thank their members and staff. BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

T

he 2017 Boys Championship was held at Langdon Hills Golf Club in windy and wet playing conditions, with the Boys under 16 and under 18 Championships at stake. The morning round was very overcast and the wind continued to blow, making conditions tough. When the rain started to fall once everyone was out on the course, conditions meant that patience and experience would play a big part in this year’s Championship. The two names that some expected to do well, Arron Edwards-Hill from Chelmsford and Curtis Knipes from Abridge, fought well to return matching scores of 73 in the morning round, dropping just one shot over their first 18 holes. However, the two county players were not leading the field at the half way stage. A brilliant level par round of 72 by Teddy Papple from Stock Brook Manor was enough to take a one-shot lead going into the second and final round. This round of 72 (E) meant that Teddy will be entered in to The Telegraph / Vitality Junior Championship. We run this qualifier every year on the morning round of the Boys Championship. We wish Teddy the best of luck in qualifying to the finals. The afternoon round was even tougher as the rain fell heavier and more consistently than the morning. There were a few competitors that felt the weather was a little too miserable, however most of the field continued to battle the elements. The scoring was equally as strong as the morning despite the difficult conditions. Samuel Kinnane from The Warren climbed the leaderboard following a score of 74 (+2). Harry Moncur from Abridge also made a charge also carding a 74, finishing on 150 (+6) for the day, finishing one ahead of Samuel Kinnane. This left a few players out on the course that could Club Team take the title. Teddy Papple could not match his Winners. morning form and slipped down the leaderboard PTO - 45 -

with an afternoon round of 82, finishing tenth overall. We are sure Teddy will be competing for this event over the next few years as he has time on his side. Curtis Knipes managed to return with an identical score in the afternoon of 73 (+1) which meant a total for the day of 146 (+2). A great days work, only to be beaten by one shot by Arron Edwards-Hill who improved on his morning round by one with a level par 72. His total of 145 was not only a fantastic effort in horrible conditions, it was also sufficient to land Arron the title. A very well deserved victory after missing out in a playoff two years Best Gross. ago at Garon Park. The Under 16 Championship which is also run on the same day saw Harry Moncur’s impressive total of 150 pick up the trophy. Congratulations to Harry. A special thank you to Langdon Hills Golf Club and their members for their hospitality.

U12 CHAMPIONSHIP / BRIAN FULLER TROPHY White Tees, Maldon – Thursday 27th July 2017

T

he Under 12 Championship was hosted by Maldon Golf Club this year and the weather was unkind for the juniors, but the course was presented beautifully, with many of the competitors and parents commenting on how well the course played despite the weather. It started dry and warm, but then proceeded to cloud over, drop a few degrees in temperature and rain seemed imminent. It wasn’t until every player was out on the course that the weather decided to take that turn for the worst. Fortunately, it didn’t deter any of them from completing their round. There were two that did not post a score, one due to falling ill on the course, the other, Dawson Langan (Langdon Hills), last year’s Winner of the nett prize and Brian Fuller Trophy winner. Dawson was bitterly disappointed with an NR after he failed to hole out on a hole later in his round. Our thoughts go out to both as they had all intentions of finishing their rounds despite the rain. This year saw 23 Under 12 year olds battling it out for the U12 Championship based on the best Gross score and the Brian Fuller Trophy which is awarded to the best Nett score on the day. Oliver Baker (Colchester) won the Brian Fuller Trophy with a very respectable score of 68. Countback was needed to separate Oliver and Henry Styles (Romford) who also carded a nett 68. Congratulations Oliver. The U12 Championship was not quite as tight at the top. Louis Vallis (Thorndon Park) had a solid score of 84 which was good enough to take the Championship this year by three shots from Callum Chamberlain (Braintree). Alexander Wall (West Essex) was third with a very good score of 91 off a handicap of 22. Our thanks go to Maldon Golf Club for hosting the event and offering their course for the day which was in magnificent condition. - 46 -

T

hree lads from the U18 Squad and three lads from the U16 Squad were chosen to represent Essex in the East Berkshire Junior Stag Open on 27th July. Colts South East League North Match

ESSEX v KENT Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Sunday 30 July 2017

S

! ! !

unday 30th July saw the Essex Colts third League Match home against Kent at Thorpe Hall Golf Club. Essex team: Brandon Meads (Capt) and Shay McQueen (Chelmsford). Will Percival, Zach Chegwidden & Cassidy Steffens (Orsett). Jordon Slater and Tom Neale (Harwich & Dovercourt). Ben Horton (Thorndon Park). Practice round on the previous Saturday was played in cloudy conditions, but the very heavy rain that evening and overnight had Thorpe Hall green keepers worrying about flooded greens and bunkers, as had occurred on the Sir Michael Bonallack competition a few month earlier. The greens crew were out at 5am on Sunday morning and by the time the first match started – 8.30 – the course was ready and waiting. It was expected that the Kent team would be strong so it came as no surprise that three of the four morning foursomes games went to the 18th and the fourth to the 17th. Kent won 2 games. Brandon & Will won 2&1. Ben & Shay were all square coming down the 18th. Shay hit an excellent approach shot to the green which Ben sank, giving them the game 1 up. Morning result: 2 – 2. Afternoon singles matches were again closely contested. Kent were consistently the better putters but Essex players proved their County selection. Jordan won 4&3, Brendan 3&2 and Shay 3&1. SENIORS SECURE NARROW VICTORY

T

he county seniors were once again victorious in the qualifying stage of the English Southern Counties Qualifier with was held at Kings Hill Kent on Wednesday 2nd August. Rain was forecast for the afternoon and so we hoped to make the most of the mornings round, but it was not to be, the morning proved difficult for the Essex men.The draw is arranged so that each of the teams play an equal number of games against each of the 3 other sides. The morning draw had our top pair Boyces Hills, Mark Stones and Chris Aukett playing Hetfordshire, Steve Rooney and Mark Whiten from Orsett also drew a Hertfordshire pair, Chris Philips and Kevin Saunders from Thordon Park drew a Middlesex pair, Jeff Matthewson (Bentley)and Glynn William(Crondon Park) drew a Middlesex pair and the final pair of Michael Partridge (Thorndon Park) and Geoff King (West Essex) were playing a pair from Kent. The first two pairs could only manage halves but this proved important as is meant that Hertfordshire only scored 2 halves and as they were likely to be our nearest rival this could prove invaluable. Chris Philips and Kevin Saunders had a very close match where both pairs were virtually even par but they won on the 18th 2 up.The following pair Jeff Mattewson and Glynn Williams were well beaten 6/5 and the final pair Geoff King and Michael Partridge also lost 1 down on the final green. With only 2 points from a possible 5 it seemed as if our chances of reaching another final were gone and to make it worse the rain had started to fall. Before long Stones and Aukett were through 9 well ahead of their Middlesex rivals with Chris Aukett scoring a hole in one at the short 6th hole. They were shortly to return to the Clubhouse after a 6/5 win. Rooney and Whiten then came through 9 also well ahead and when Philips and Saunders came through also well ahead it seemed as if a revival was on the way. Matthewson and Williams were also 3 up at 9 and King and Partridge were also 4 up at 9. So it was into the buggy to chase them down Steve Rooney and Mark Whiten beat their Middlesex pair but they took them all the way to the 17th hole. Chris Philips and Kevin Saunders managed to win against Kent on the 16th which was a favourite hole since Jeff Matthewson and Glynn Williams also beat Kent there. It was then over to Geoff King and Michael Partridge who were playing a Hertfordshire pair and they were holding a 3 up lead and they won the 16th to make it 4 up with 2 to play and complete a noteable 5 wins out of 5 games in the afternoon. 7 wins out of 10 possible was good enough to secure victory and a trip to Denham for the final in September. MIDDLESEX v ESSEX Hendon Golf Club – Monday 7th August 2017

T

he County Senior side arrived at Hendon Golf Club knowing that this was an important must win game and also by the biggest possible margin. This was because of the results of our previous games, which if Hertfordshire beat B.B. & O. the the league title would depend on our scores in individual matches. PTO - 49 -

Essex fielded a strong side but were without their English International who was playing in the English Seniors. County Champion. Steve Rooney led the team out and was soon well up against his opponent, winning by an impressive 6 and 5. The other matches were not so easy and with Mark Whiten and Kevin Saunders drawn against Hendon members and both were eventually beaten 3 and 2. At this stage we were 2 games to 1 down but felt confident that we would secure the win but we never envisaged it would prove as comfortable as the result suggests. BOYS FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP Gosfield Lake Golf Club – Wednesday 9th August 2017

G

osfield Lake Golf Club saw the return of The Boys Foursomes Championship, but this year the weather was not as you may typically expect for early August. 30 pairs took part from Clubs around the county. The morning saw a light drizzle fall consistently but the forecast suggested that it was going to get far worse as the day went on. So much so, that we notified every competitor prior to teeing off that there was a possibility that the championship may be played over A. Buttle just 18 holes due to the suspected and T. King. weather. As the morning progressed the rain got heavier and the course became wetter. However, Gosfield Lake soaked up the downpour exceptionally well, so much so that it looked likely that the afternoon round could take place, despite the rainfall. The tough conditions meant that the scoring was certainly higher than recent years, but rounds of 78 (+6) by Chelmsford’s Nathan Parrish & Harvey Payne as well as Kieran Gravely & Harry Wood of Boyce Hill looked to be a good target for the day. These early finishers were sat in the clubhouse locked as the rain got heavier. Nathan Parrish, looking to make it back to back wins as he partnered Joshua Coleman last year to win the Championship. 2015 Winner Alfie Buttle, had a new partner this year in Tommy King, Orsett’s pair returned a score of 76 (+4) which was impressive in such poor conditions. A double bogey, 4 bogeys & 2 birdies were included in their round which stated they played some pretty consistent golf in conditions where 7 or 8’s were becoming common. Over lunch the weather did brighten up, so much so that it was decided that the afternoon round would go ahead. However, after just two groups had teed off the klaxons sounded and play was terminated for the day as the rain fell heavier than it had done all day, a shame but an unavoidable decision. The pair that were most grateful of the weather was Alfie & Tommy, picking up the Essex Boys Foursomes Championship, Alfie for the second time in 3 years. Congratulations to them and Orsett Golf Club. A big Thank You to Gosfield Lakes golf club and their members for once again hosting this event and providing their usual B. Carson superb hospitality. Let’s hope for some and J. King. sunshine next year.

Colts South East League North Match

ESSEX v KENT Sheerness Golf Club – Sunday 13th August 2017

T

! ! !

he last match for Essex Colts of the 2017 League, away to Kent, was played on Sunday 13th August at Sheerness Golf Club. The home match had been a narrow win of 7/5 to Essex so Kent were seeking revenge and they had brought in a couple of different players. Essex also had a few changes. The full team was Will Percival (Captain for the day) and Cassidy Steffens (Orsett), Jordan Slater (Harwich & Dovercourt), Ben Horton & Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Ben Wyatt (Raleigh), Shay McQueen (Chelmsford) and Callum Pipe (Braintree) The morning foursomes were tightly contested. A good win of 6&5 for Ben Horton & Lukas in the third game followed by a good win for Kent of 4&3. The first game went to a tight win of 2&1 for Will and Callum and then Jordan & Shay went to the 18th for a half. Morning result Essex 2½ - Kent 1½ Essex got off to a bad start in the afternoon singles. After seven holes they were down in the first three games, up in the next two ( Ben Horton and Lukas found themselves playing against their respective morning opponents). Down in the sixth and seventh and Ben Wyatt all square in the eighth. After the twelfth hole the situation did not seem much stronger except that Will had moved up to all square. Kent were still up in four games. The number of holes to play were running out. Lukas finished 6&5 followed by Ben Horton 3&2. Jordan had 8 pars and 5 birdies but still lost 2&1. Will came through and won 2&1. Essex now had three wins. One '(!)*+&*! halved game and the match would be tied. U18 Inter Counties League

ESSEX v BUCKS BERKS & OXFORDSHIRE AND HERTFORDSHIRE Chigwell Golf Club – Sunday 13th August 2017

T

he Essex u18 boys’ final InterCounties league encounter of the season was against BB&O and Hertfordshire at a bright and breezy Chigwell Golf Club. It was unfortunate that this particular match clashed with the British Open Boys Championship at Nairn robbing spectators of the chance to see a number of the country’s leading young players, although somehow BB&O still managed to field two England Internationals. Captain Josh Read led off for Essex and had the unenviable task of matching himself against big hitting Charlie Wilkinson from Herts and England international Kristian Donaldson from BB&O. Although his loss to both was hardly a shock the narrowness of his defeat certainly was and he is to be commended for the way in which he lead his team. Over successive seasons in the junior ranks Liam Francis has shown himself to be a tenacious match player and this was no exception as he claimed victories against both his opponents. Undefeated for two seasons Callum Newton has proved himself a difficult man to beat and he continued in this vein emerging from the match with a win against his Hertfordshire opponent and grabbing a half against England International Conor Gough. Highlight of the day was undoubtedly the performance of young Harvey Sullivan who, making one of his rare appearances up from the County’s under 16 team, demolished both his opponents with a round of golf approximating to 5 under par. Although the Essex boys managed to overturned their early season defeat at the hands of Hertfordshire it was still disappointing nties League U18 Inter Cou not to get closer to BB&O who, in the absence of a &O BB v rts Essex v He major upset, will emerge as top team from the league this year. As always our thanks go to our hosts Chigwell Golf Club for the use of their splendid facilities and providing hospitality to players, officials and spectators. U14 CHAMPIONSHIP / STILLWELL TROPHY Maylands Golf Club – Tuesday 15th August 2017

T

he Under 14 Championship was once again played at Maylands Golf Club this year. The course was in good condition and the weather, whilst a little chilly first thing, turned out to be near perfect conditions for golf. The Under 14’s Championship is played as a gross score strokeplay competition, and the Fred Stillwell trophy is presented for the best nett score. Thirty-Seven players from around the county set out from 9.00a.m. onwards, and a few hours later Teddy Papple (Stock Brook Manor) returned to set a challenging Clubhouse target. His 72 gross on the par 71 course was a fine performance, and from his 5 handicap that gave him a nett 67. This was soon followed by fellow County Under 14 team member, Rory Bennet (Hainault Forest), whose gross 76 reflected another good morning of golf. These two scores would prove tough to beat. In the Stillwell Trophy competition Teddy Papple remained in the lead for a long time, but was eventually challenged by James Stanley (Romford) who also returned a nett 67, and finally by Max Toombs (Stoke by Nayland), who had a great day of his 12 handicap, returning a nett 66. At the end of the day the 2017 Under 14 Essex Champion golfer was Teddy Papple, with an excellent 72, and the winner of the Stillwell Trophy was Max Toombs with his nett 66 score. Our thanks go to Maylands Golf Club for hosting the event and offering their course for the day, and to all those who took part and confirmed the future of Essex golf looks very promising indeed.

2017 JUNIOR FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIPS Ham Manor Golf Club, West Sussex – Thursday 17th August 2017

T

he annual England Golf SE Group Junior team and pairs championship was held this year on the South coast at Ham Manor Golf Club in West Sussex in weather that was more autumnal than summer. The championship day started in cool rainy, but comparatively still conditions and ended hot and sunny with strong gusts of wind making ball control tricky. The format is scratch stroke play foursomes with each pair from a team of six players playing 36 holes and all scores counting towards the team competition. Running in parallel with this is the individual pairs competition for the pair with the lowest 36 hole score. Despite having key players away at the British Boys Open in the absence of BB&O and Hertfordshire the Essex team looked to have a real chance of success in this competition. A quirk in the conditions of the competition enable manager Steve Golding to take seven players and give opportunities to Harvey’s Sullivan and Payne who played alongside junior ‘veteran’ Alex English in the morning and afternoon respectively. At lunch Essex were joint leaders and full of optimism, but foursomes is the most difficult of golf formats and a mark of this is that on the day only one pair in the field was able to match the course par score of 70. Eventually when all the scores were in the top five teams were separated by one stroke with Kent holding top spot with a team total of 39 over and Essex one stroke further back on 40 strokes over, but relegated to fifth place on countback. Sixth place team Hampshire being some eight strokes further adrift. Showing their usual levels of ‘never say die’ determination Liam Frances and Callum Newton were the leading Essex pairing finishing fourth overall with morning and afternoon scores of 75. Inevitably the Essex team were left mulling over what might have been, but from the sideline it was clear that on the day club selection and course management were key to winning this competition with one double bogy saved being the difference between first and fifth. No doubt three other teams were thinking the same thing. So near and yet so far. Yet again our thanks again go to Martin McDermott, Michael Rees, Bob Blowers and the rest of the England Golf championship committee for putting this event together and to Ham Manor Golf Club and its members for the use of their excellent golf facility. - 55 -

U16 SKEVINGTON TROPHY Colne Valley Golf Club – Thursday 24th August 2017

T

he annual 27 hole singles medal for the Skevington Trophy incorporating the Bob Bagshaw team event was played this year at Colne Valley GC between the usual eight man teams from Bedfordshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. Conditions were some of the worst in memory for July there being frequent heavy rain showers, almost constant drizzle and cold strong swirling winds which made practically every hole on the course appear to play into the prevailing weather. Despite the weather the course was in very good condition, the greens took the amount of excess water very well and putted truly. The morning round produced an excellent nine holes of 34, 1 under par from Jake Wells of Essex giving him a 3 shot lead over Teddy Papple also from Essex and 4 shots over JR Ellis and Matthew Green of Bedfordshire and Harvey Sullivan from Essex. The afternoon 18 holes also produced some outstanding golf in the conditions notably from Harvey Sullivan of Essex the eventual winner who carded a 1 over par 71 which eventually gave him a 2 shot victory over a strong finishing JR Ellis and by 3 from Jake Wells. The Bob Bagshaw team trophy which comprises the best 3 gross added to the best 3 nett scores from the eight man team was also won by Essex who on the day were too strong through the team for the visiting Counties. Our thanks go to Colne Valley for all of their help in the staging of the event, the use of their course and facilities and to the visiting officials and teams, we look forward to visiting Norfolk who host the event next year. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE

HYDRATION H

ydration in sport is overlooked. For me its in my top 5 regarding to performance and injury prevention. Dehydration can increase chances of injury, reduce concentration, create tiredness and big energy dips and cause your body to not fully function. Water acts as a lubricant around the joints, around the spine and helps keep the muscles supple. When dehydration occurs the body immediately turns to survival ... the organs need water to stay alive, therefore water is then stolen from joints, muscles, the spine etc to give to the organs. This leaves joints, muscles and the spine vulnerable to injury as there is no lubricant there anymore until replaced. So all of those times you feel stiff, achey and not very supple up your water intake! Dehydration can cause a serious lack of concentration and muscle fatigue. This is a disaster in golf.To stay consistent throughout a game your energy levels must stay constant and your

- 57 -

concentration levels in top form. Ever mess up hole 15-18? Dehydration can be a major part of this! So ... how do we achieve hydration? Clean, pure water is the only fluid to hydrate effectively. Tea, coffee, squash, juice and fizz will not hydrate you, actually most of these drinks do the opposite and actually dehydrate you. Get yourself a 2 litre bottle of water and aim to drink it all by the end of the day. Once you can do that up it to 3 litres (dependant on your size, the bigger you are, the more you will need). Around the course, drink water and water only, products like “Lucozade” causes huge sugar highs to real sugar lows. Hydrate from early in the morning and continue to do so all day. Hydration or a hydrated body moves more freely, isn’t as “stiff ” and will perform so much better. If you have tight, inflexible muscles, try hydrating for a while and see how it improves.

BIG MAX Launches Terrain Electric Trolley

B

IG MAX, the most owned push trolley brand in Europe, is adding to its award winning range with the launch of a new electric model – Terrain. The three wheel trolley is designed to give you complete control on even the toughest tracks, making life on course that little bit easier and leaving you free to concentrate on your game. The Terrain earns its stripes with a series of clever systems that keep you on course. The 230w whisper quiet motor delivers power a plenty while the reinforced differential and automatic downhill braking keeps speed constant. This combines with differential steering and robust construction to safely navigate the fairways whatever the gradient or surface level. The Terrain also features a colour display for speedometer, battery status and distance control while the folding mechanism is distinctly BIG MAX as it simply packs away to fit in any car boot with ease. On the height adjustable handle the Terrain has a neat storage facility with room for scorecard, GPS or phone. It also houses an optional solar charger to keep all of your devices topped up on your round. With Lithium as standard and a host of compatible accessories such as a seat, drinks holder and umbrella holder, the Terrain offers comfort and practicality for every user. Take it ‘Off Road’ and golfers immediately benefit as it eats up the Terrain like few others on the market. www.bigmaxgolf.com

PowaKaddy Launches Summer Cart Bag Promotion

Srixon Launches All-New AD333 Golf Ball for Better Balanced Performance

S

P

owaKaddy has launched an exciting new cart bag promotion to mark the end of the summer season which will see golfers receive a free cart bag when they purchase a PowaKaddy FW7s or FW7s EBS trolley. PowaKaddy Cart Bag Promotion Every golfer who buys one of the brand’s FW7s trolleys between Monday 14th August and Monday 11th September will get a free-of-charge PowaKaddy cart bag worth up to £209.99. As part of the promotion, golfers can choose from two of the brand’s cart bags, including the Dri Edition and the Premium. “Our cart bag promotions have proved very popular in the past and we hope golfers will take advantage of this brilliant offer,” said David Howse, UK Sales Manager for PowaKaddy. “We find that golfers who have PowaKaddy bags to match their trolley enjoy using the product a lot more – mainly because of the bag’s clever Key Lock system that ensures it stays firmly on the trolley at all times. It really is a fantastic promotion but it will only run while stock is available so we’d encourage customers to get their orders in fast, to avoid disappointment.” Boasting a new frame colour, soft touch handle trims, graphics and front wheel with yellow trims, the FW7s is the ultimate in cutting-edge design. The popular trolley is packed with technology and features a stunning full colour 3.5” widescreen display, built-in calorie counter, distance measurement function and powerful, near silent 230W motor. Boasting a three-year warranty, the FW7s also offers an optional Electronic Braking System (EBS) model with three levels of progressive braking when going downhill. The two bag models that feature in the summer promotion all offer a wide range of features and benefits. The Premium bag is the most popular in the brand’s stable with the widest range of features, whilst the Dri Edition bag boasts a high-tech, 2000mm waterproof fabric that provides protection against all winter elements. rixon has announced the launch of a newly redesigned version of its immensely successful AD333 golf ball, which has dominated the UK 2-piece market for the past 11 years. Ideal for golfers who demand balanced performance from a more durable, 2-piece offering, the new AD333 is a premium, lower compression golf ball that delivers the perfect combination of performance, exceptional distance, soft feel and greenside control. Srixon is a tour-proven golf manufacturer with premium golf balls and club offerings popular with golfers around the world. The AD333 golf ball utilises the same premium technologies found in Srixon’s higher performing tour-level balls, but offers them in a 2-piece construction that is more durable and affordable. The new AD333 features a lowercompression Energetic Gradient GrowthTM Core, a new third generation Spin SkinTM coating, and a new, more efficient 338 Aerodynamic Speed DimpleTM Pattern. These three technologies combine to deliver balanced performance, longer, more accurate driving distance, better iron control, and improved greenside spin. “The AD333’s built-in tour technologies should help golfers see great performance in every aspect of their golf game,” said Michael Ross, Senior Product Manager at Srixon. “This is the golf ball for players who seek maximum playability from a more durable, 2-piece design.” The key technologies inside the new AD333 include: • Lower-Compression Energetic Gradient Growth Core. AD333’s core technology uses variable stiffness to deliver better feel and exceptional distance on every shot. • Third Generation Spin Skin Coating. This latest iteration of Srixon’s proven ball coating is more elastic with less bonding points so it produces more consistent spin from any lie – especially the rough. • Aerodynamic 338 Speed Dimple Pattern. Along with more control in the wind, this dimple pattern reduces drag to maximise distance. Available in Pure White and Tour Yellow, the new AD333 golf ball officially launches in the UK on 15/09/2017 and has an SRP of £22.00 / €29.00 per dozen. For further information on the new AD333 and all Srixon golf balls, products and accessories, as used by the game’s best players, visit www.srixon.co.uk
