LILY MAY WINS ANNIKA INVITATIONAL EUROPE ngland’s Lily May Humphreys has won her third big title of the year with a wire-to-wire E victory in the Annika Invitational Europe.

The 17-year-old – who was immediately drenched by well wishers – was 12-under par after 54 holes, scoring a one shot win over the international field at Vasatorps Golf Club in Sweden. She’s the first English winner of the championship and she beat a field featuring the best female junior golfers in Europe. The 79 players represented 23 different countries and included five of the top-100 girls in the World Amateur Golf Rankings – including Humphreys, who is currently 26th. The win brings Humphreys a Ladies European Tour exemption into the La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational hosted by Annika as well as coveted PING Junior Solheim Cup points. Humphreys opened with scores of 69 68 and held a three-shot lead as the final round got underway. Denmark’s Anne Normann chased her hard, shooting four-under on the front nine and drawing level after a fifth birdie on the 10th.

But Humphreys moved ahead again with birdies on 14 and 16 and although Normann birdied the last, the title belonged to the English player. Humphreys said afterwards: “When Anne made three birdies in a row to get within one, the back nine became a bit edgy, but it was a fun day.” Annika Sorenstam commented: “Big congratulations to Lily May on the win and I look forward to following the future successes of all the players.” Humphreys adds this to the Welsh and Irish Women’s Stroke Play titles which she won earlier this season.

The coaches’ player of the year award went to George Davies, this was fully deserved having reduced his handicap from 16 to 5 since September. Tom Lowe was awarded the academic student of the year having work tirelessly on his studies overcoming many hurdles along the way. -8-

IF YOU COULD PRACTICE ONE DRILL TO SAVE SHOTS QUICKLY WHAT WOULD IT BE? or most people the quickest way to save shots is on the putting green and developing F distance control. A key word I have found in

quickly be aware of how calibrated your putting speed is.

working with players on their putting is ‘calibrated.’ Is your speed control calibrated so that you can control the distance on the greens? If you are not then your first putts are going to be constantly long and short meaning your second putts are too far away to hole out as much as you want. These quickly rack up meaning many people are heading towards or even over the 40 putts per round mark. Try the below drill to get calibrated, get your first putts closer and it can have a big effect on all of your game. Try the 20,30 & 40 foot drill- Get 2 alignment sticks and place on the putting green about 2 feet apart, then put 3 tee's at 20 feet (8 paces), 30 feet (12 paces) and 40 feet (16 paces). Then take 5 balls and see how many you can get to stop between the sticks. You can repeat and you will

he day started with a heavy mist and the treat of thunder and lightening hung over the Essex Schools Handicap Championship event. AMAZING DAY AT BENTLEY he Bentley Golf Club in Brentwood hosted an amazing event on Friday 7th June in aid of T the Brain Tumour Charity. In total 144 players

Two competitions ran side by side. The Best two stableford scores from the 4 ball team and best overall individual for the Gina Rose Trophy. The clouds eventually revealed blue sky and some very good scores were recorded. Team name “Putter Wouldn’t Melt” won with an astounding 87 points. Best individual score went to Nick Andrews with 40 points for the trophy. The evening held an auction with some truly fantastic items up for bidding. Best of all though was the resounding success of the day due to the generosity of the members and guests and those who donated prizes and money. Many of whom were unable to attend the day. Their generosity raised an unbelievable £10,790 for the charity an outstanding amount. Gary and Gina Rose who organised the day said “Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you who helped make this day the resounding success that it was, your benevolence was overwhelming, thank you all for your love and support.” The event will be held again next year on 5th June and hope that just as many can make the day again. If you are interested in making this event then please get in touch with Gina ginarose748@gmail.com or Gary Rose

JOSHUA SWEEPS AWAY OPPOSITION oshua Eley with nett rounds of 67 and 66 swept away all opposition in Colchester Golf J Club’s Coronation Cup.

First presented in 1937 to commemorate the Coronation of George VI and the opening of the 18 hole course this competition is played over 36 holes. Eley, playing off 21 handicap, never gave anyone else a look in. his first round put him on top of the leader-board and with an even better second round he was never headed. After the first round Mark Brown (8) had shared the lead with Eley, both on 67 nett, but he fell off the hot pace in the second but still returned a credible 69 to secure second spot by a two shot margin. Third place was Oliver Baker (8) with 68 and 70 nett and tied with him was Bill Eke (4) both with 138 totals. The best gross score in the competition went to Tom Neale. Neale playing off a handicap of one had two gross 71s, with a total of five

birdies. Cai James (2) with gross scores of 73 and improved 72 was three shots back on a total of 145.

Joshua Eley with Jim Wilkinson, Club Captain and the Coronation Cup.

DO NOT SWEAT

Its Summer Season T

he golfing season is in full swing (apart from the torrential rain we seem to have had to deal with the last few weeks!!) and i find golfers get frustrated that they have no time to hit the gym. They worry they will lose everything they have worked on throughout the winter, their flexibility will go backwards and fitness to pot!! It doesn't have to be this way. Keeping things ticking over throughout the season is priority. In the winter months golf is almost at a stop ... all that spare time can be thrown into the gym, stretching and training. The summer is full of competitions, practice, socialising playing golf and so on ... its not a huge problem if you have to scale down the gym throughout the summer, actually its smart to jig your training schedule about. Rather than stressing about the fact you have no time to train why not just have some acceptance and schedule your gym around your golf and on a smaller scale. if you are used to going to the gym 4 times per week in winter months then scale it to once per week during

summer months but make that once per week very specific. Once per week gym session to include the following; Stretch and mobilisation (10 mins). Core and postural exercises to warm up (20 mins). Integrated and big bang (full body workout ... no isolated exercises) exercises (40 mins) Yes, your session will be a little longer to fit all the essential movements in. Once per week is absolutely fine when you are covering the right stuff!! Integrated means exercises that use the whole body ... lunges, squat push presses, wood chops, 1 arm cable pulls, cable pushes, deadlifts, bent over rows, pull ups and so on. Big bang exercises mean big movements that will build muscle very efficiently ... squats, lunges, deadlifts, rows, bench pressing, pull ups. This is why it is so very important that you schedule what you are doing, follow a programme and have someone work out your seasonal programming! Enjoy the sunshine, the lovely golfing weather and the season ... its what you wait for every year!

HAVE YOU SELECTED YOUR OPEN WINNER? S

o with just a couple of weeks to go until the 148th Open Championship at Portrush, Northern Ireland, how many of you have placed bets? Currently I can get 8/1 on Rory and Brooks, 12/1 on DJ and Tiger! Really though, even though we can look at form and those players that have history in big tournaments, we really are just guessing. Perhaps we’d be better pulling out 6 names form a hat and backing those? Incidentally, some of this guesswork started last year after the last Open! How does that relate to the golf that we play? Well, if you want to play your best golf, take out the guesswork and forecasting. Simply just play, one shot at a time.

level, which is neither productive or useful. When you play golf, you know if you are playing well. Yet, when your partner congratulates you after the front nine and declares you have 22 points already, that puts pressure on you (if you let it), to have a great back nine. Blob a hole, around the 12th or 13th and the wheels can start to fall off! Adversely, when you’ve scored maybe 14 points on the front nine and consider yourself to be out of contention, how many times do you have an amazing back nine? Perhaps because you’ve not concerned yourself with your score, but have just ‘played golf ’? So this months Mind Zone tip, is a simple one. Forget the score, and just play golf, one shot at a time. Add up the score at the end, and you may surprise yourself over a number of rounds, that your game and success will improve. Enjoy the final major of the year, and your own golf too. To keep up to date with forthcoming Mind Zone workshops, follow us on Social Media and finally this month, here’s a little teaser…. When do you know it’s the right time to hit your shot? Drop us a line with your answers and we’ll discuss www.themind-zone.com next time.

I’ve had the fortune to play some wonderful courses over the past month or so, but wherever I play, I often hear the same talk on the course. ‘I’ve a great score, I just need to par in’, ‘The last two holes, I should be able to birdie’, ‘I’ve been putting really well, I reckon I can compete today’! Of course, this all sends signals to our mind of expectation and hope. In essence, we are predicting the future. Clearly, we have been programmed to do this over the years, and every golf interview you see on TV, generally starts with asking the leaders ‘What do you need to shoot to win the tournament’? Putting a figure on it, 3 under, 5 under or whatever, puts unnecessary pressure on the player, even at a sub-conscious - 24 -

have been delivering a number of short game Imonths clinics for both Men and Ladies over the past few with much positive feedback.

The information received is a very small percentage of player’s have never taken a putting lesson which incidentally does not involve a huge amount of technical input. There is one very simple but hugely effective “tip” which I would like to share which I am certain will assist with your putting. Many short putts are missed due to excessive lower body movement causing the closing or opening of the putter face. Instead of “keeping your eye on the ball” which in my opinion can be mis interpreted and a possible cause of this unwanted movement. So, instead of looking at the ball at address focus on a specific piece of grass or imperfection between the golf ball and the putter head. This means leaving a

small gap as shown in the image between the two keep focusing upon this spot until the ball finds the bottom of the hole! I recall working on this when I was taught by the late Harold Swash who really instigated much work on the putting green which is being widely used by today’s top Putting Instructors. Give it a go and would love to hear your feedback via my Twitter or Facebook channels. Sarah Bennett

DESERVED WIN COLNE VALLEY our golfers from Colne Valley Golf Club teamed up to win the Stoke by Nayland F Ladies Open championship.

The team of Dee Clark, Margaret Somerville, Claire Wheeler and Lynne Southgate scored 87 to beat the runners-up by three clear points. The club is particularly proud of their victory because three of the women, Clark, Somerville and Wheeler, have learned the game through the club's Get Into Golf programme. Their instructor, PGA golf professional Scott Rusbridge, said: "Creating regular golfers is the aim of the programme, but to get ladies winning events like Ladies Opens is the icing on the cake." Under the Open format, the best two scores out of four count towards the total.

Open champions: From left Dee Clark, Margaret Somerville, Lynne Southgate and Claire Wheeler with Stoke ladies captain Diana Harris.

ADJUSTABLE DRIVERS ARE THE CURE OF ALL MY DRIVING WOES: lthough a worthwhile tool I think the marketing for these clubs can be misleading in the fact that a golfer could think that the adjustability will cure all their tee shot woes. Funny thing is here is A that all the adjustments you can make on the very latest driver could have been done on a persimmon

NO!

wood 50 years ago! Let’s take a look at each individual aspect of an adjustable driver and see the features and benefits for the average club golfer.

CLUB ADJUSTMENT

FEATURE

BENEFIT

Loft

Generally gives the ability to add or subtract a couple degrees of loft.

It’s been proven that in reality the loft does not change that much, it actually alters the face angle more than the loft.

Lie

Ability to alter the shaft angle to suit player stature.

Driver length is more important here, if the driver length is correct the lie is generally good. Saying that this is still a worthwhile adjustment.

Face Angle

Ability to change the way the club face sits at address. For example a golfer who slices the golf ball may opt for a closed (aiming left for a right handed golfer) club face.

This is a good feature as it enables the golfer to make the club sit in a way that they prefer. For the higher handicap it would help to cure slicing or hooking.

Weight Distribution

This allows the golfer to adjust the movable weights positioned in the toe, heel, front and back of the head. Some manufacturers now offer a vertical weight shift.

Great for the better player wanting to perfect ball flight. Lack of availability of weights can make this a little trivial.

My belief is that if you can't hit a driver in the neutral position you probably won't be able to get the benefit from adjustability. Adjustable golf clubs are marketed in a fashion where golfers are led to believe that a 30 yard slice can be turned into a soft draw with the turn of a wrench - unfortunately this is totally incorrect. Adjustability is fantastic but only as a fine tuning tool. - 30 -

This was Adrian’s first hole in one in 30 years of playing golf although Adrian has only a member at Stoke by Nayland for 3 years. His opponent was pleased but stated he wasn't in the least bit surprised having watched some superb golf over the earlier holes off a 19 handicap.

VISION AND THE BALL ... HOW AND WHY TO LOOK

07961848370

ooking at the ball whilst swinging the golf club is a pretty obvious statement. But there L are many golfers who during the swing cannot

be really looking at the ball properly. When I say properly I mean with your foveal vision as opposed to your peripheral vision. Foveal vision is basically the part that you read with. It is the central vision that we use when we need the best acuity. This is the only area in the retina where 20/20 vision is attainable. The main reason we do not want the ball to go into peripheral vision is that we then have to try to pick up the central vision again on the downswing this can cause the head to rotate in a manner that hurts the ability to deliver the club in a decent way. The images shown below show my full head rotation in both backswing and forward swing whilst keepin the ball in my foveal vision. To give you some idea of foveal vision it sees only the central 2 degrees of the visual field approximately twice the width of a thumbnail at

arms length. So anything outside of that is peripheral vision. Start to look at the best players head motions to see the rotation that they have in their swings, most are incredibly controlled especially with iron shots. Many though are able with driver especially to forgo this slightly to help them get a bigger backswing and create more speed, so there are sometimes reasons to let go a little the vision on the ball if the trade off is worth it. The ability to keep your eye on the ball properly is one of the major factors when talking about good proprioception and balance in the golf swing. So this is well worth looking at if your balance is not too good. If you would like anymore information regarding this topic please fee free to call or email.

FRANK TAYLOR WINS THE ROGER HYMAN TROPHY

Frank Taylor receiving the trophy from Roger Hyman.

lmost 60 players took advantage of the near perfect playing conditions for the Roger A Hyman Trophy on Saturday 22nd June at the Five Lakes Golf Club.

Longtime clubhouse leader Frank Taylor (16) just hung on to the win on countback from club Treasurer Dave Parkins (19) both players with 43 stableford points with Taylor scoring 22 points on his back nine holes. Third place went to James Roblin (16) one of Five Lakes Juniors with 40 points. Nearest the pin prizes on the 4th and 11th holes were won by Frank Taylor and James Roblin. Birdie 2's were won by; Dave Chignell on the 4th, Ian Kirkman, Jack Garnett, Clive Weir and 2nd placed Dave Parkins who also had a 2 on the 16th along with Senior Captain Ken Russell, there was also an Eagle 2 on the par 4 10th hole by Neil Shinwell.

REPEAT FOR DICK AND TIM ick Bokenham and Tim Rogers repeated their feat of last year and D held onto the Dick Proctor Trophy at Colchester Golf Club. Bokenham and Rogers won out in this four-ball-better-ball pairs stableford competition after a threeway countback from the pairings of Kyle Appleton (10) and Donald Parish (12), and Rob James (11) and Steve Freeman (11) all returning the 42 points, two points lower than their last year’s winning score. Bokenham and Rogers’ strength from their adjusted handicaps of eleven and nine, 9/10ths of actual, was a faultless back nine with a better-ball score of level par gross and although the scoring was tight in all three pairings the others just could not match the level-par finish. - 36 -

CHIPPING FIND YOUR BEST BALL POSITION

he most important thing when we chip or pitch the ball is the contact. Striking the ball T on a slight descending blow and almost

simultaneously into the turf with a slight bruising of the grass. It is important to find your own personal low point, how you actually feel comfortable hitting slightly down on the ball. Without changing your technique on the way you pitch and chip can be the most effective. Try this simple test place 5 balls in a line and address the middle one just in front as I am doing in Picture 1. Now have some swings making sure you bruise the grass and notice where your

consistent contact point with the ground is. As you can see in Picture 2, with me it is slightly before the middle ball, I have marked it with a tee peg. This tells me that my ball position should be slightly back of centre towards my back foot. That is me but you may be different, it’s worth finding out as they say no short game no game. This November I am hosting a coaching week in Turkey, if you would like to join me to find out how you can get the most from your game, give me a call. Have fun

JASE TRADES BIRDIES FOR BLISTERS

olfers are known for enjoying a good walk. But Jason Levermore (Little Channels Golf G Centre) took it to extremes recently when he

took on the London 2 Brighton Challenge to raise funds for Cancer UK. It was the latest in a series of quests that Levermore as part of a group has undertaken in memory of his great friend Jason Moss, who died of leukaemia aged 21. Levermore, 39, has also run the London Marathon, successfully completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge and the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge. But the London 2 Brighton Challenge tested his every ounce of his resolve. Stopping only for brief breaks, he walked for more than 26 hours without sleep on the last weekend in May. He said: “You start at Kew Bridge and walk down to the Brighton coast, which is about 102 kilometres in total 66 miles. Six of us did it and we’ve raised about £3,200 between us. “My feet were horrendous, the last 10 hours I was in agony, I’ve got seven blisters over my two feet and one on the left sole no exaggeration it’s about the size of four 50p pieces! It burst with about five kilometres to go and my foot got soaked. “To be honest, the last 10 hours of the walk every step felt like needles going in my feet, It was just brutal, even now, a week later, I’ve got plasters on five of my toes and a compeed on the

sole of my foot.” The 2019 PGA East region captain made a tentative return to competitive golf five days after his walk and received special dispensation from the tournament director to wear trainers rather than golf shoes. Levermore said: “My feet were still a little swollen from the walk, so I had to change my socks every three holes and talc my feet because they barely fitted in my shoes.” To Levermore’s credit he still had the class to shoot level par and finish tied-fourth at Crews Hill. The Essex ace plans more fundraising activity in the future but don’t expect him to be trying another 100-kilometre non-stop any time soon. He said: “I’ve told the boys I’m not doing another one of these challenges at this distance. The last 10 hours no one talks to anyone because everyone is in agony! “I want to do stuff that we’re going to enjoy from now on. So next year we’re doing one up in the Lake District, which is a mix of kayaking, trekking and mountain biking over the space of about 12 hours.” Fewer hours, more fun and surely fewer blisters, eh Jase? CAN PUTTING MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO YOUR GAME? FOR ONE YOUNG GOLFER IT HAS

t’s now the middle of the golfing season and hopefully you are playing well and there is Ibetter weather to come!

However, have you been struggling to score or your confidence is low in the area of the game that can make the difference. You’ve heard the saying “Hit for show and putt for dough?” Well, last September I was approached by a young golfer who was hitting the ball well and having problems with the putter. After much work and developing what I call the 360 Strategy, Brandon Meads won The Essex Amateur at Romford on Sunday 9th June. So what have we done as a team that has helped? Well we found out that posture wasn’t as solid for his body type, the putter was affecting stroke which was diagnosed on Quintic Ball Roll, so the putter has been changed from toe hang to face balanced. We looked at green reading in helping to develop a routine for each putt and a mindset on what he was going to do to hole the putt. Work is still ongoing, but in order to improve we are working on performance drills to help him in training to then perform on the course. You can see that we have looked at many aspects to do with putting and are looking into how Brandon can continue to perform at the highest levels of the game. He knows my philosophy and that is everybody can become a Professional Golfer at putting

regardless of their playing ability, as putting is all to do with pace and path and not about power. This means that anyone in playing the game of golf can perform as well as a Tour Player can with their putting. How fantastic does that sound. Attempt this drill - place one ball on a straight flat putt 3ft from another ball. See if you can get the ball that your striking with the Putter to replace the ball that’s 3ft away exactly on its spot. It will show you whether the pace and path of the ball is indeed good or not. See how many times it takes you to get it perfect. I hope that is useful and please contact me if you would like any further advice. Until then take care and enjoy the the rest of Summer.

Brandon and me.

Match Report

EASTERN INTER-COUNTIES FOURSOMES Seacroft Golf Club – 18th /19th May 2019 he Essex County team once again travelled to Seacroft Golf Club, Skegness for the annual Eastern Inter Counties T Foursomes Championship.

This a competition comprising the best golfers from 9 counties all playing each other over 2 days on the superb Seacroft Links. With back to back victories in 2017 and 18, Essex were looking to complete the hat trick this year. Four sessions of golf starting on the Saturday morning with Essex facing a tough start against Northamptonshire and Team: L to R Josh Tobin(Orsett), Callum Pipe (Braintree), Josh Read (The Rayleigh Club), County Captain Andy May (Boyce Hill), Ben Tobin (Orsett), Ricky Lee highly fancied (Boyce Hill), Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford), Phil Hulse Team Manager, Shaun Mills Leicestershire/Rutland. With (Orsett), Brandon Meads and Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford), Ross Dee (Orsett). 5 out of the 10 games going to the last hole this was indeed a tight, hard fought session, with Essex getting a 2.5 all draw with Northants and a narrow 3/2 defeat to L&R. A 4.5 points total and whilst not the ideal start, not disastrous either. The afternoon saw Essex drawn against Suffolk and Bedfordshire. With Suffolk a tough nut to crack, a 2.5 point draw was a reasonable result and combined with a 4/1 win over Beds this gave us a 6.5 point haul for the session which was the joint top score and a first day total of 11.5 points leaving us just 2 behind overnight leaders Lincolnshire and BB&O. Sunday morning was on paper the weakest opposition in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire with anticipation high that the deficit could be reduced, and we could be in contention for the afternoon session. How wrong this turned out to be! With Norfolk winning all their games and Cambs winning 3/2, Essex had only 2 points from a possible 10 and were languishing in 7th place some 6 points behind joint leaders Lincolnshire and Norfolk. With potentially 2 of the top teams (BB&O and leaders Lincolnshire) against us in the final session, the Essex players were determined to make amends from the morning. With a 4/1 win over Lincs and 3.5/1.5 win over BB&O, some pride was restored with a 7.5 point haul. This lifted us up to 5th place overall. With Leicester/Rutland gaining 8 points in the final session, this gave them a 2.5 point victory over second place Lincolnshire. - 44 -

SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY & THE COLTS CHAMPIONSHIP Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Friday 24th May 2019 he Thorpe Hall Golf Course was in superb condition once again with all players T impressed by the fast running greens. The

morning’s play was impressive, but the course was playing tough. One of the early starters, William Horne (Thorndon Park), set the standard with a one over par 72. The rest of the field then tried their best to beat the target that Will had set. Alex Bradley (Chelmsford) also managed a 72, as did one of the late starters, Shay McQueen (Chelmsford), but no-one manged to better the early pace. A number of other players were sitting just behind the leaders at lunch with very creditable scores, Jake McGlinchy (Woolston Manor) 73, and with 74’s Harry Wood, William Horne and Shay McQueen. were Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) and Daniel Vaughan (Orsett). The Colts Championship for Under 21’s is run in conjunction with The Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy and this year the halfway lead was held by two of the three on morning rounds of 72, William Horne and Shay McQueen. In the afternoon Will Horne set out early again, knowing that he was in the mix for a podium finish, the added pressure on this 15 year-old young man did him no harm at all. An excellent round of golf resulted in a two under par 69, leaving him with the early Clubhouse lead on 141 (1 under par). The gauntlet had well and truly been thrown down to the other challengers. Alex Bradley was the next of the morning leaders to complete his second round, but a few mistakes cost him a score of 79 and he fell by the wayside, as did Jake McGlinchy who struggled to contend with a stiffening breeze. Lukas Warren then returned a steady score of 72, total of 146, good but not quite good enough to topple Will. Michael Gilbert could not make any impact on the leader, but Harry Wood (Boyce Hill) then returned the second best score of the day, a level par 71, a total of 146, and squeezing into second place with only a few players left to finish. It was left to Shay McQueen to make the final challenge to Will Horne, he returned the second best score of the day, a one under par 70 for a 142 total, just missing out by one shot. The Winners & Runners up of the Sir Michael So William Horne secured both the Sir Bonnallack Trophy & Colts Championship. (continued on the next page)

Michael Bonallack Trophy and The Colts Championship with a fine performance, with second and third in both competitions going to Shay McQueen and Harry Wood respectively. In the nett handicap prizes were home Club member Tony Wan (Thorpe Hall) with second place going to Tom Hatton (Stoke by Nayland). One final prize presentation was also made, to Joe Green (Orsett) who had a hole-in-one on the 7th hole, a 180 yard par 3. Will received a warm round of applause as following the presentation of both Trophies to him he made a confident speech for one so young. We are sure we will be seeing Will at the top of leader boards for a number of years to come. Thank you to Thorpe Hall Golf Club, their staff and the members for giving up their course for the day, and for their impeccable hospitality. ESSEX COUNTY TEAM v BB&O

T

Frilford Heath – Sunday 26th May 2019

he Essex County team travelled to Frilford Heath Golf Club for the second league match of the season expecting a tough encounter against highly rated BB&O. With a formidable BB&O lineup including four plus 3 players and plus 4 David Langley (combined team handicap of plus 20 ! ) this was indeed a tough ask for Essex even with players like Arron Edwards-Hill and Curtis Knipes in the side. Despite the 3.5/1.5 Essex victory over BB&O a week earlier at Seacroft Golf Club in the Eastern Counties Foursomes, BB&O played to form on Sunday morning wrapping up a comprehensive 4 nil foursomes tally and leaving a mountain to climb in the afternoon singles for Essex. The afternoon saw the Essex men determined to salvage something from the match and came out of the blocks firing. First out, Brandon Meads against John Gough (4th place finisher in last week's Europro tournament at Brocket Hall). With 4 birdies and an eagle in the first 6 holes, Brandon was 5 under the course and 5 up on John which was sending out a clear message to all the following games. After 7 holes with Essex ahead in the first 6 games and narrowly behind in the last 2, there was room for optimism that we could repeat the efforts of 2 years ago in this fixture when Essex came back from a 2 point deficit to snatch a draw. This optimism was short lived however as BB&O showed what a talented bunch they are by giving a masterclass of putting on Frilford's excellent greens that was nothing short of Ryder Cup standard. Whilst Brandon clinched his point against John Gough who himself was well under par at the end, match 2 saw Ollie Huggins go from 1 down with 4 to play against Curtis Knipes, winning the next 3 holes rolling in some amazing putts for a 2&1 victory. Next, Arron suffering even worse torment from David Langley with a 5&4 defeat. Michael Gilbert next to suffer the BBO putting machine with his opponent holing out from off the green at the last to snatch victory. With Callum Pipe giving Aaron Ashberry some of their own medicine in a 5&4 win, scores for the afternoon were level at - 46 -

3 all. Penultimate match saw Skipper Andy May lose to Tom Lawson despite himself being 4 under par at the end. The final kick was felt by Ben Humphrey again at the last with his opponent slotting in a near 25ft putt for a 1 up victory. Singles score 5/3 to BB&O with an overall Match result of 9/3 An amazing display of golf from both teams with the class of the BB&O lads just too much for Essex, especially on the greens. One of those days, a pleasure to watch and full credit to the Essex lads. Winning the league now an uphill struggle hoping that either Bedfordshire or Herts can halt the BB&O party. FALDO WEDGE Garon Park Golf Club – Thursday 30th May 2019 aron Park Golf Club hosted The Faldo Wedge this year with an impressive entry of 120 Juniors from all around the County. The weather proved to be kind and remained warm and G dry with a strong seaside breeze at times, which proved to be a good test of golf for the entire field

of boys and girls. The Faldo Wedge consists of morning and afternoon start times. Teams consist of three juniors representing their Club, with all three scores to count from 18 holes of stableford format. The mornings play saw some great golf, with Colne Valley dominating the top of the leader board, both Teams managing to get all three players scoring consistently. Colne Valley B managed 103 points, pipping their A team by one point on 102 points. Then, as the morning rounds were all near completion Benton Hall raised the standard, returning a combined score of 110 points, with Dominic Hoskin finishing the morning off with the best score of the day so far, 40 points. Scoring in general had been tough on the well-presented course, but the target had been set for those venturing out in the afternoon sunshine. A long wait was in store for the two sets of Colne Valley players and the Benton Hall team as the afternoon competitors prepared to do battle. If anything, the winds did drop a little in the afternoon but still made for tough conditions for all the players as the breeze was drying out the course. Early starters in the afternoon, Forrester Park A, managed to knock the Colne Valley teams down a place by totalling 106 points, eventually taking 3rd place. Epping B then raised the tension in the Clubhouse with their first two scores indicating they were in the hunt, finally just falling short, returning a score of 107 points to take 2nd place. The Warren A also then entered (continued on the next page)

the fray late on but their final total of 102 points was only good enough to split the two Colne Valley teams, finishing in 5th place. So, Benton Hall with a fantastic score of 110 points held on to their lead throughout the afternoon, winning the Faldo Wedge by three points. Benton Hall will now be representing Essex in the National Junior Club Championship later in the year at Woodhall Spa, we wish the team all the very best of luck for the event in August. The two individual prizes on the day went to Harry Lloyd (The Warren) with 41 points, and for the girls Alanna Matthews (The Warren) with 39 points. Our thanks to all the Junior Organisers that do so much for junior golf in the county and to Garon Park Golf Club for hosting the event and making everyone so welcome. All the junior golfers were a credit to their Clubs.

THE ESTUARY TROPHY 2019 he Estuary Trophy is a World Amateur Golfing Ranking (WAGR) event, played over 36 holes at Orsett GC T (Threadgill Trophy) and 36 holes at Boyce Hill GC (Boyce

Scratch Bowl). This year there were 24 entries into this competition which combined two Essex Order of Merit events. In the first half of the competition at Orsett, Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park) set the early pace with a superb first round 67, five under par. This was closely followed by Daniel Vaughan (Orsett) with a 69, and a number of other players breaking par with opening 71’s. In the second round Shaun Mills (Orsett) followed up his EGU President Elect, Lawrence opening 71 with a fine 70, setting the halfway pace with a 141 Kingsnorth presenting Winner Lukas Warren with the Estuary Trophy. total. Lukas and Daniel both failed to match their morning excellence and submitted a 75 and 73 respectively, both finishing on 142 at the end of the first day. These three players had opened up a six shot gap on the rest of the field. The Threadgill Trophy going to Shaun Mills on another superbly presented Orsett course. A couple of weeks later and the focus had moved on to Boyce Hill for the second half of the competition in difficult breezy conditions. Lukas Warren hit the birdie button again with an excellent two under par round of 66 to take a commanding lead into the final round on 208. Daniel Vaughan had an error struck round of 77, with Shaun Mills suffering with an 80. Jack Brown (Chelmsford) moved into second place overall with a fine round of 69, giving him a nine-shot deficit to try to make up in the afternoon. Dave Abbott (Boyce Hill) made use of his local knowledge to submit a 71 and move into closer contention for the third placed prize. The Boyce Hill course looked in great condition and ready for a good score in the afternoon, but the pressure on the leading players made it tough to score well. From the contenders Daniel Vaughan returned the best score, a one over par 69, for a 288 total. Dave Abbott followed up his good morning with a slightly better afternoon round of 70, his score of 290 being good enough for 3rd place. Both Jack Brown and Lukas Warren struggled in the afternoon breezy conditions, both shooting 75. Jack slipped down to 4th - 48 -

place with a 292 total, but Lukas had done enough to claim outright victory with a 283 total. Well done to Lukas for a well-earned victory and his first step onto the WAGR listings. A mention for Jack Dyer, back from College in the USA too late for the Threadgill event, he scored 70 + 64 to finish 2 under par at Boyce Hill and collect the Boyce Scratch Bowl trophy.

Under 16’s League Match

NORFOLK v SUFFOLK v ESSEX Dunstan Hall – Saturday 1st June 2019 travelled to Norwich for their first league game of the 2019 campaign against Norfolk and Suffolk at a very sunny Dunstan Hall. EAssex tricky 1st hole caught no less than 16 players out by the double water hazard, setting the

tone on a short, dry and bouncy course. Good Course Management was reaping rewards and early on Essex struggled to come to terms with an unfamiliar track. The team were down in over half of the matches as they passed the half-way stage. In the first match out, Lewis Wright played very well to secure the first points for Essex with a nice double win. As the matches played out it looked like Essex and Suffolk were going to be fighting it out for 1st place, but some surprise defeats in the top order left Essex struggling. Eventually good double wins by Crawley , Atkinson and Rothery-Archer got Essex back in it. It came down to the last match where Tom Vass managed to secure the half point needed to just edge out a strong Suffolk side. A good double victory and top of the table position (Essex 4.5 Suffolk 3.5 ; Essex 6.5 Norfolk 1.5) gives Essex confidence going into an important Home tie on July 6th in the second league match.

Under 14’s League Match

KENT v ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE Kings Golf Club – Sunday 2nd June

I

n our first league match of the season Essex and Hertfordshire were guests of Kent, playing at Kings Hill Golf Club, a course with its undulating terrain featuring large areas of protected heath and mature woodland, subtle undulating greens set at deceptive angles and narrow fairways, which made it a test for all golfers. Kent were off to a flying start with their first 4 players winning both their matches with the Essex boys mainly picking up points from Hertfordshire. But then the tide began to turn with 5 of our remaining players Max Porteous (Warley Park), Max Briggs (Warley Park), Callum Chamberlain (Braintree), Henry Styles (Romford) and Edward Linley (Romford) picking up maximum points from their opponents. There was some very good golf played by all the Essex boys not least by Marley Read (Forrester Park) who led the Essex team out, he had 12 pars and a birdie, yet still lost 1 down to Jake Antoun from Kent. All in all, a good start to the season with lots to look forward to. Our second league fixture is in Hertfordshire on 7th July with our home match at Rochford Hundred on 11th August. Final result: Kent 32pts, Essex 30pts and Hertfordshire 10pts. Our thanks to Kent and Kings Hill Golf Club for their hospitality. Bill Dunbar Under 14s Manager - 49 -

ESSEX AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Romford Golf Club – 8th & 9th June 2019

All the Winners With Romford Club Captain John Fitch & EGU President Brian Collins.

he first morning of the 2019 Essex Amateur Golf Championship was greeted by cloudy skies a strengthening wind throughout the day and a little drizzle now and then. A strong field of 72 T players set out on a very well-presented Romford course, toughened up a little to present a good

challenge for the elite golfers in the county. As the first players started to return scores from their morning rounds it was clear that the players were facing a stiff test, the early pace was set by Tom Neale (Harwich & Dovercourt) with a one over par 72, and he was soon joined by Joe Tatam (Brentwood), with George Gennings (Thorndon Park) going one better to earn the Clubhouse lead with a level par 71. This score was not bettered, but George was joined by Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), Alex Christie (Basildon), Daniel Vaughan (Orsett), Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill), and Callum Pipe (Braintree), in a six-way tie at the top of the leader board. The players headed out for the afternoon rounds all competing to be placed in the top 42 by the end of the day to qualify for the final day on the Sunday. Joe Tatam continued his good form returning a level par 71 for a 143 total, setting the early target as George and Tom struggled to match their morning figures. Alex Christie then returned the first sub-par round of the day with a two under par 69, giving a 140 halfway total. Kishen Velani also returned a 69 in his second round, giving him a 143 total, which would eventually leave him tied for fourth place. Dan Vaughan and Ricky Lee both signed for 72’s in the afternoon to also finish on 143 totals. Harry Robson (Orsett) was one of the last players to finish, a good afternoons work added a 69 to his morning 73 elevating him into third place on his own. But Brandon Meads played an excellent round in the windy conditions for a 68, the best score of the day, and had already set the overnight pace with a three under par total of 139. The team competition for the Esplen Trophy is competed for over the first day of competition. Boyce Hill represented by Ricky Lee and Harry Wood finished as runners-up to the Chelmsford pair of Brandon Meads and Shay McQueen. The Chelmsford team finishing with a combined two over par now qualify to represent Essex in the England Golf Champion Club tournament in September, coincidentally being played at Romford Golf Club. - 50 -

MIDDLESEX SENIORS v ESSEX SENIORS Northwood Golf Club – Monday 10th June 2019 day looked grim as we headed to Northwood Golf Club for the first League Match of the it was raining, and the forecast predicted a month’s rain in one day. Next up was Mark Stones who suffered the setback of a hole in one by his opponent but still managed to grind out a half. Next was Orsett's Steve Rooney who had found his putting touch thanks to digging out an old two ball putter and managed a 4 & 2 win. The following matches were a lot tighter with new boy from Romford, Chris Bellamy, and Mark Whiten of Orsett both winning 2 & 1. The remaining five matches all went the full distance. First through was Chris Aukett who somehow managed to only halve his match, although his opponent seemed to spend most of the round playing out of the trees. The next two games were also very entertaining tight affairs, Mike Partridge of Thorndon Park eventually winning 2 up and Tony Wheals of Orsett winning 1 up. The final two matches were too close to call right up to the 18th hole, John Wright of Basildon winning 2 up and another newly qualified team member from Romford, Rob Douglas securing a half to end the day with a win for Essex by 8 1/2games to 1 1/2 Exactly the result we had hoped for in our opening match, now we are looking forward to the rest of the season T The next match is perhaps the toughest of the year when we take on the strength of B.B. & O. at Romford on 9th July.

ESSEX COLTS v HERTFORDSHIRE COLTS Theydon Bois Golf Club – Sunday 16th June 2019

he second league match of the 2019 Season was played (again in rain!) on the beautifully presented Theydon Bois course. TEssex team:- Capt Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Brandon Meads, Shay McQueen, Jack Brown,

Ben Humphrey, Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford), Zach Chegwidden & Harry Robson (Orsett) The morning foursomes were tightly contested, Hertfordshire proving to have a very strong team. After seven holes only Shay and Jack were up, and they went on to win their match 2up. Two of the other pairs had good comebacks, Ben and Michael went all the way to the 18th hole and won 1up and Lukas and Brandon took their match to the 17th where they lost 2&1. Lunchtime Foursomes result: 2 - 2 The rain actually held off for the afternoon singles. Most of the matches were close with five of the eight going to the 18th. In the other three Jack had a good win of 5&4 and Ben another of 3&2. Of those going the full distance Shay finished all square and Zach clinched his match on the 18th 1 up. Harry and Michael both lost on the 18th in very good contests. Which left Lukas in the last match going down to the last hole and the last putt to gain the half that <=31= we needed to halve the overall match. Singles: 4 – 4. Essex Colts

EAST BERKSHIRE STAG Wednesday 19th June 2019 ssex enters six Colts into this annual East Berkshire Golf E Club Competition, a 36 hole

individual stroke play event for the Stag Trophy and teams of three for the Team Trophy. From the Club History – “It was in 1903 that the Masters of nearby Wellington College first talked about golf, or at least a golf course, and being men of action as well as enthusiasm, they formed a company and bought sufficient land. From its origins as a heathland course designed by Peter Paxton, East Berkshire has matured into a tree-lined course of great beauty. Shaped fairways leading into well-defined semi-rough helps to identify the driving areas and carefully placed greenside hazards ensure that wayward shots go unrewarded.” The six Essex players were Lukas Warren, Brandon Meads, Ben Humphrey, Shay McQueen, Michael Gilbert and Oscar Yeomans. A total entry of 64 players took part from Clubs far and wide with a maximum handicap of six. After the morning round the leader in the Clubhouse was two under. Several of the Essex players were quite close behind with Ben on level and Brandon on one over. All still to play for. Scoring proved more difficult for most in the afternoon – except for Shay who had one under and Brandon who had a level par round. Eventual winner - Aaron Crabb from Windwhistle Golf Club (Chard, Somerset) three under. Brandon & Ben finished in tied 3rd place plus1 with Brandon 3rd on a count back and Ben 4th. The team event was contested by seven teams from five counties. Always difficult to select two teams of three from the six players but this year we got it right. Shay at plus3 joined Brandon and Ben to win the Team Trophy – total 419. Thanks to all the staff and members at East Berkshire for making us so welcome. We look forward to returning next year. he Society of Essex Lady Captains 1st Summer Meeting took place at Gosfield T Lake Golf Club in mid June. Despite a forecast

of rain and potential thunderstorms most of the Ladies got off lightly with with just a few showers. The course was in great condition though the rough was tricky. It was a relatively small field with 46 ladies playing in the 4BBB competition on the day. The evening meal was truly delicious and praised by many of the ladies on the day. Thanks to Sally and all the staff on the day for looking after us so well. There was much competition for the prizes. In 4th place ocb were Dot Greaves (Forrester Park) & Georgina Grout (Harwich & Dovercort) with 38 points. In 3rd place also with 38 points were Madeleine Wright (Thorndon Park) & Maggie Stevenson (formerly North Weald). Second place went to Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Sheila Mines (Benton Hall) with an impressive 41 points. In first place and winners of the Froom Cup were Mary Anne Decruz (who had recently rejoined the

Society after moving clubs from Woolston Manor to Benton Hall) and Hazel Webber (Belfairs) with 42 points. Mary - Anne had something else to celebrate as she had a hole in 1 at the par 3 149yd 5th hole over water and uphill so no one actually saw the ball go in the hole. This shot enhanced the pairs 4BBB score by 5 points. Thanks also to Lady Captain of Gosfield Lake Sophie Dixon Smith for her help on the day, to Carole Robinson for all her help with preparations and playing on the day and to Jenny Starr for marking a card. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and a lot of positive feedback was received. Hazel Webber one of the winning pair said after the event “... please thank all the Committee, it appeared to the players to run faultlessly. Such things only happen with a lot of hard work behind the scenes ... a really good job. The course and staff great, food wonderful I do not think the day could have been bettered. Great company and my first win in 25 years of membership thank you.
