AUGUSTA INVITES FOR ENGLAND TRIO hree England internationals have received prized invitations to compete in the first T Augusta National Women’s Amateur in April. “It’s amazing,” said Lily May Humphreys who, like Annabell Fuller and Alice Hewson, took to social media to express delight. “Can’t believe it,” posted Fuller, while Hewson told her Twitter followers: “Growing up I never thought it was possible to receive a little green and gold letter in the post… Augusta National here I come!” The championship was announced at last year’s Masters Tournament and will be played by an international field of 72. They’ll all play the first two rounds at Champions Retreat Golf Club, then have a practice round at Augusta National before the top 30 players play the final round there. “This was one of my goals for the year,” said Humphreys (pictured). “It will be amazing and such a good field. “I never imagined I would play at Augusta – and the invitation is cool!” It mirrors the invitations sent to the competitors for The Masters. The initial field for the new championship includes the winners of six events and leading players from the world rankings. Hewson is 39th, Humphreys is 53rd and Fuller 55th. All three are Curtis Cup players. Humphreys, 16, from Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in Essex, also won the Helen Holm
Scottish amateur open last year and represented Team GB in the Youth Olympics. Her targets for this year include claiming a place in the Junior Solheim Cup team and the GB&I team for the Vagliano Trophy match against Continental Europe – and bagging a couple of titles. Hewson, from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and Fuller, from Roehampton in Surrey, are both
studying in the USA. Hewson, 21, has played in two Curtis Cups – including the 2016 GB&I victory – and helped England to two European team gold medals. Fuller, 16, played in Europe’s team in the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup and was runner-up in both the English and Portuguese women’s amateur championships. All three players are in the initial GB&I Vagliano Trophy squad. -8-

THE MIRACLE AT ILFORD GOLF CLUB T
wo family members set a new equal course record at Ilford Golf Club within the short space of 10 minutes of each other on a hot summers day in August of 2018. Cousins George and Mark Durrant of Ilford golf club entered The Saturday medal on the 25th August in separate 4 balls only to find out in the clubhouse that the both of them shattered the existing course record set at -4 (64) George Durrant posted a gross score of -6 (62) at 4.40pm only for the course record to be matched a further 10 minutes later by Mark on the demanding and tight par 68. As seen by the 2 scorecards, it will be interesting leading into 2019’s golf season on whether this brilliant feat can be beaten once again by either family member, with George Durrant now holding the honour as Ilford’s club captain and playing off a scratch handicap. The first seen for a captain of the club in the 112 year history.

ESSEX SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP 2019 Overall Winners with U14, U16, U18 Age Group Gross and Handicap Winners.
IFTY eight boys and nine girls gathered at Thorpe Hall Golf Club on a bright day in F October to compete in the Annual Essex Schools Championship. They came from 37 varied schools and colleges around the County and London Boroughs, from Southend to Havering and Saffron Waldon to Clacton. All had handicaps below 13 which meant we could be treated to a high level of performance. A bright day led to some good scores and it’s pleasing to report a good good speed of play with no hold ups during the day. Also thanks to Steve Bonnington and his team of referees who did a sterling job. Teddy Papple (2) of Billericay School finished with a 72 along with Charlie Dodds (4) but won the day by courtesy of countback. Will Dove (3)
Overall Winners 2019 – Millie May Penfold and Teddy Papple.
in his last year at King John School and always a supporter of schools golf, finished in 3rd and won a place in the Regional finals along with Jesper Lawrence and Josh Gray who all finished with 74, the last place in the next round going to Adam Crawley Overall Handicap Winner Dominic Hoskins. of Mayflower School with a 75. Dominic Hoskins of Maltings Academy collected the Handicap prize with a Nett 67! A great result well done. In the girls competition, Millie May Penfold carried home both the Gross and Nett trophies with a 78 and 68 respectively, Sophie Wheeler was runner up with a gross 81. Ciara Rushmer and Ashley Chalmers join the two girls with a place in the Regionals, along with the boys in Buckinghamshire at Whitsun. U.16 Champions Teddy Papple and Millie May Penfold will also be offered a place at the U16 Schools Championships. EXCITING SEASON AHEAD FOR THE EAST
T
he PGA in England (East) has confirmed an exciting playing schedule for 2019, including four Order of Merit tournaments, three longestablished Classics and more than 30 pro-ams. Jason Levermore (Little Channels Golf Centre) will start his defence of both his Order of Merit crown and the London Open title at West Essex on June 11. Already a prominent tournament in the schedule, the London Open promises to be even bigger and better in 2019 when it will be held in partnership with the PGA in England (South).
The remodelled co-sanctioned event will include 72 players from each region and be extended from 36 to 54 holes. The top-50 and ties from the opening two rounds will make the cut for the final day’s play. Ingrebourne Links will stage the second Order of Merit event on August 6. It will be the second time the North course at the impressive Essex venue will play host to an Order of Merit tournament. The East Region Championship will once again be staged at Bishop’s Stortford from September 4-5. And, as in 2018, the race to finish in the top-three will conclude with the KJW Millbrook Masters incorporating the East Anglian Open at Millbrook on September 18-19. The traditional seasonal curtain-raiser, the Searles PGA Spring Classic, is scheduled for April 24-25 at King’s Lynn ad Hunstanton. The Summer Classic will, as usual, be staged at Royal
Cromer and Sheringham on July 2-3. The Marston’s Beer Autumn Classic takes place at Felixstowe Ferry and Woodbridge from September 26-27. Other key dates for the year include the regional members’ meeting and AGM on February 13, the Overseas Pro-Am at Vilamoura from March 29-31 and the Marston’s Beer Trainees’ Championship at Bishop’s Stortford on August 12. PGA regional manager Gordon Campbell said: “We are all looking forward to the 2019 season and are pleased to publish another strong schedule. “A new development is that the London Open will become a cosanctioned tournament with the PGA in England (South) in 2019. From its inaugural staging in 2016 we identified the London Open as an event with considerable growth potential. “And we believe that partnering with the South region opens up considerable opportunities for it to go from strength to strength in the future. “Ingrebourne Links impressed everyone who played in its inaugural Order of Merit event last year. I have no doubt this exciting venue will continue to swiftly develop and we are delighted to be returning there this August. “Bishop’s Stortford is always a great test, invariably producing a quality champion, and we’ll anticipate the same at this year’s East Region Championship in September. “The 2019 KJW Millbrook Masters will have added gravitas this year as it incorporates our longest-established event, the East Anglian Open. “Overall, we have a varied and busy schedule and we look forward to seeing many of our Members and their friends over the coming year.”

MAKE PRACTICE MORE
LIKE YOU PLAY! here is a lot of research out there at the moment T in coaching circles looking
at how you practice. What is the best and most effective way to practice and make the best use of your time. Is it beat to hundreds of balls at the driving range, just go out and play or something in between. The answer is that you have to find the correct way for you and everyone is a different. The important thing is to have a plan especially if you have time constraints. But try these few ideas and try to incorporate into your practice.
BE MORE MINDFUL – On a range it is easy to get into ball beating mode. Aim to be more aware of what you are doing, maybe hit less balls and aim for quality more than quantity. I hope these simple ideas help make your practice more effective and help you perform better on the course where it counts.
PRACTICE YOUR SHORT GAME USING JUST ONE BALL - When
you use just one ball it becomes more like playing on the course, each shot will be different and you get used to the variability that is inherent in golf.
- 18 -
ON COURSE GOLF CONSULTATION Is your Golf on the course different to the Driving Range? If you would like to improve your game on the course, I am offering a 4 hole or 9 hole on a course session to a make a real difference to your scores. We can see what is happening where it counts and make a plan to improve your game. Cost is £40 for a 5 hole session and £55 for a 9 hole session. Please get in contact with Matt on 07808 003 619 to book your consultation or online via southessex.glflocker.com/

The Full Package itness and training, nutrition, mindset and lifestyle! They are as important as each other. F My belief is that all have to be addressed to get
MINDSET
Flexibility, core strength, posture work and strength. I tend to use this analogy ... the foundations must be laid, to then build the walls, to then finally put on a strong roof. Put in the groundwork to build a solid and stable unit. The unit must be balanced, straight and built to last.
The power of the mind! Self belief and positivity is vital in a sport like golf. You have no team mates to lean on, no one can take your shot for you and you can only win against your component (of equal handicap) if your head is in a better place than his/hers. Practice positivity by attracting what you want! I love the law of attraction and practise it daily … thoughts become things, you can manifest what you really want. To read more about this look up a book called “the secret” by Rhonda Bryne.
NUTRITION
LIFESTYLE
Nutrition is SO important! Not only for weight maintenance but also for energy levels and to directly refer to golf ... for concentration. There are many studies that will relate different injuries to poor nutrition, for example; the hamstrings (tight, weak and injury prone) are apparently directly linked to the gut (colon) ... in other words IBS or gut problems can be directly linked to hamstring malfunctions. There are many other ailments linked to poor nutrition and I believe through work with clients it is accurate.
Sleep, fluid intake, supplementation and movement. Sleep is very under-valued! Circadian stress (lack of sleep) is possibly one of the worst stressorson a human being. It can make us very very ill, can make us underachieve and most certainly WILL make your golf performance poor. Optimal sleep times; 10pm - 6am … between 10pm and 2 am we physically repair (muscles, tissue, bone etc) and between 2am and 6am we physiologically repair (stress, mental health etc). Its important we get enough sleep. 2-3 litres of water daily. Vitamin D between the months of September and may keeps the germs away and keeps SAD (seasonal affective disorder) from happening. Magnesium is great for muscular function and actually pretty vital for everyone for many reasons. MOVE! daily activity ... walk, take the stairs rather than the lift, park a little further away. 10-15,000 steps daily for all round fitness. The full package provides a very all round approach. When covering all areas you cannot go wrong and will see the biggest improvements.

A FRESH START; ARE YOU COMMITTED?
elcome to the first Essex Golfer Magazine of 2019 and a very Happy New Year from W The Mind Zone. What targets have you set yourself for this coming year and the golfing season? There’s something about a fresh start, isn’t there? Like that new exercise book that you got at school and wrote so so neatly in ... for the first few pages! Or the New Year resolution, for whatever you were attempting, that was so good for two or three days?!
A new golf season must mean only one thing; Commitment to improve! Whether that be your driving, fairway shots, chipping or indeed putting (and now with a new dilemma of deciding to leave the flag stick in or not). But how committed are you to improve? I’ve lost count of the number of golfers who have said to me over the past year ‘I really must come along to a Mind Zone session’ and then never quite make it, as something else always crops up, yet you continue to see them on the course struggling and beating themselves up regarding their game. Yet where is the commitment to improve? We can have great days at golf, we can have
average days; occasionally we throw in a stinker of a round and start soul-searching as to where that came from. It’s golf! As Dr. Bob once said, ‘Golf is not a game of perfect!’ But if you are to improve, then you must show commitment to the cause. So if you do nothing else over the next few months, then show yourself some commitment to gain more consistency. Contact me here at The Mind Zone for some easy tips as to how you can do just that. I’m always delighted to hear from attendees of Mind Zone sessions and Mind Zone Masterclasses and generally they are informing me of how well their last round of golf was, how they’ve used a certain tip or mind technique to produce some stunning results, with more wins, more trophies and more cash taken out of the swindle pot than they put in! On a personal level, I also had my best round of 2018, between Christmas and New Year and as one of my playing partners said, ‘You just know when it’s your day’! What he meant by that remark was one particular hole, a par 4, dog-leg left, that I happened to have leaked a drive to the right of the fairway. Sadly my second found the pond guarding the green, so once I’d recovered the ball and taken a drop (from shoulder height ... it was still 2018!), I had 44 yards to the hole. With a gap wedge in hand, the ball was dispatched, hitting the green and rolling towards the hole, and rolling until it hit the pin and dropped. Walking away with another par, you can imagine the congratulatory banter (or the cries of ‘How lucky are you), ... but I was aiming for the hole! What’s stopping YOU having your very BEST round of golf, the next time you play? Finally, Club Captain’s, Club Managers, Leslie Wood, Jubilee Cup, Norman Plum and Thornton Cup Squads, Ladies Gold, Silver and Bronze matches; Why not give yourself the best possible chance of success this year by hosting a Mind Zone session at your club? There are so many benefits to golfers, members, clubs and teams, that all it takes is that word again, commitment. Drop me a line at The Mind Zone for full details of how The Mind Zone sessions can benefit you. www.themind-zone.com

RECORD 50,000 PUPILS TAKE PART IN SCHOOL GOLF COMPETITIONS IN ENGLAND hanks to a partnership between national charity the Golf Foundation and the Youth T Sport Trust, more than 50,000 young people have taken part in an inter-school golf competition in English schools for the first time in one academic year. The level of competitive golf played in primary schools saw a significant increase in 2017/18, jumping from 40,000 participants to just over 50,000, as 25% more boys and girls took part in inter-school School Games events, enjoying easyto-play ‘Tri-Golf‘.
The Golf Foundation, having recently received a welcome endorsement and funding commitment from The R&A, believes that its successful Tri-Golf Festival format is a ‘game changer’ for primary schools as it has become an established part of the national School Games. The School Games, which is funded by Sport
England and delivered by leading charity the Youth Sport Trust, was started in 2006 as a single annual multi-sport competition before being expanded in 2010 to include more localised competitions, from major county level events to smaller competitions within the same school. An estimated 300,000 children in nearly 3,000 primary schools were given the opportunity to play Tri-Golf over the 2017/18 academic year thanks to the School Games, and as part of the Golf Foundation’s national ‘HSBC Golf Roots’programme, which encourages more young people aged five to 17 to ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in the sport in schools, communities and golf clubs. The School Games format has also appealed to junior-friendly golf clubs, as 10,000 of these youngsters enjoyed their school v school matches at a golf club in their area under the guidance of a PGA professional coach and supported by the Golf Foundation. The Foundation encourages all primary and secondary schools to include girls in mixed teams for events, aiming for each school team to be made up of 50% girl players. Though the scoring is important, the accent is just as much about ‘Skills for Life’ learning, which is seen as a key reason for golf ’s growing acceptance by teachers as a new team sport. School Games Tri-Golf offers inclusive and highenergy game formats, an honesty scoring system and the training of young volunteers from secondary schools to encourage the youngsters. A Skills for Life trophy is presented to the most sporting team on the day.
- 28 -
The Golf Foundation team believes it is succeeding in changing perceptions of golf in schools. Employing Tri-Golf for younger kids and ‘StreetGolf ’ in secondary schools, the Foundation and its partners have shown thousands of teachers that golf can be fun, educational, safe to play, practical in terms of space and fully inclusive for all abilities, while offering follow-on playing opportunities at a growing number of Golf Foundation approved golf clubs. Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “Thanks to the School Games and the successful working partnership between the Youth Sport Trust and the Golf Foundation to develop innovative and adapted competition formats, golf is now an established part of competitive school sport in primary schools. This certainly is something to celebrate as we know that golf now offers inclusive and engaging opportunities for all children to develop motor control, attentional focus as well as a range of life skills, while also having lots of fun with their friends.” Foundation Chief Executive Brendon Pyle said: “Ten to 15 years ago, golf just wasn’t seen as suitable or appealing in the school setting but the growth of Tri-Golf has really changed these perceptions. Thanks to the support of all at the Youth Sport Trust we have been able to tailor our programmes to make a lasting impact in schools. “We see the successful evolution of Tri-Golf as a genuine game changer. It’s fantastic that golf is now seen by a great many schools as one of the ‘go-to sports’ of the School Games. This is important to this charity as we sought to build on the legacy of the London Olympics of 2012 with some real energy and innovation; to help make golf a more accessible sport for kids across all communities and from all backgrounds.”
PHYLLIS STILLWELL 23rd JULY 1926 – 22nd DECEMBER 2019
hyllis Stillwell sadly passed away just Christmas at the great age of 92. PHerbefore funeral was held on Monday 21st January 2019 at South Essex Crematorium and afterwards at Maylands Golf Club. She had been a member of Maylands Golf Club since the 1950s. Phyllis was always an enthusiastic member of the club. She joined the committee, became secretary and eventually Lady Captain; not just once but three times. On the last occasion when she was 80 years of age. Eventually Phyllis was made Honorary Life President and has been a big influence on many people at the club.
Phyllis had been a member of the Society of Essex Lady Captains for well over 50 years, attending her first meeting at Chigwell Golf Club in 1965. She served on the Society Committee in a variety of capacities including the Ida Bunting Organiser & Referee for many years. She was Captain of Captains and then became a Vice President of the Society. She was still involved and took a keen interest in what the Society got up to until her late 80’s. A truly lovely lady who always put her heart and soul into everything. - 29 -

Balance
ll moving sports require balance, running jumping hitting etc. Golf also requires good balance to be able to move in a co ordinated sequence, and this balance comes from the pivot, which is the movement of the body during the swing. The club simply swings around the outside of the body and is dependent on it to swing freely through the ball. Each day spend a little time doing the sequence I am doing in the picture. Picture 1 stand comfortably with your arms
hanging but your hands separated. Picture 2 swing your arms back still keeping them separate. Finally in Picture 3 swing through to the end of your swing and most importantly hold there for a count of three. If you can do this you will improve your ability to move the club around a consistent path which in return will help hit consistent shots. Good golfing Gary

t the time of writing this piece I would say it is one of the most “golf friendly” winters to date! Minimal rain has assisted the courses greatly with buggies permitted for longer allowing playing A opportunities for everyone. I am sure everyone has been experimenting with the radical new 2019 rules of golf which I wont be writing about but how many of us have actually thought about the “marginal gains” which will help improve out golf? Here are a few points which we can all ensure are in place ready for the forthcoming Spring season. (incidentally there should be none can tell me much about the player’s hold position) Treat yourself to the finest leather or for winter golf the all weather type is the perfect option.
1. Grips ... When was the last time you actually cleaned your grips or asked your Professional to change them? Have a look at your current clubs including your putter grip which incidentally should be a size where your hands are lightly placed on the handle, not strangulating it! I am a Golf Pride authorised fitter and the recommended grip change is approximately every 6 months for 3-4 rounds a week. There are of course other determining factors such as climate but why not help the longevity of your grips making it your promise to clean them weekly with basis soap and water. 2. Spikes ... This is an interesting point as the trend for golf shoes has changed dramatically over the years but if you have soft spikes why not take a look at these right now…They should all have the prongs showing and not so worn they can’t be removed. Pop this on your shopping list next time you are at your club. There is advanced research now stating that the type of footwear has an impact on the overall golfers consistency but if we can start with “sound grip” providing equal balance through out the swing that is a start. 3. Glove ... I have written an article on my blog about how the glove tells a story! Firstly this is the one thing I have a peek at prior to the start of a new lesson. The areas of a worn gloves
4. Tee height ... Using the same tee height will help with your driving consistency, if you find the traditional wooden tee difficult to guage then experiment on a grassed area using a variety of height determining which tee height produces a more uniform shot pattern. 5. Finally try using the same golf ball for your competitions there is no official rule in the Amateur game “one ball rule” as in the Professional ranks but it will certainly help you to achieve a better overall consistent feel, short game and control your distance more effectively. CAKEWALK FOR THE LADIES
he ladies at Colchester Golf Club held their Christmas Cakewalk competition on a glorious T December day. It was the team of Madryn Abnett, Daphne Bloomfield, Cathy Burchell and Julie Dicks who from the 14 holes played returned an impressive 66 points and came-in in a clear first place. Scoring consisted of the best two scores to count, except on the par threes where three scores counted toward the team total. The bright weather was the exception rather than the rule, as the ladies have had a particular run
of bad weather in the last few weeks. Coming in second with a total of 61 points were Cynthia Lampon, Nerys Horrocks, Gill Minns and Julie Ruscoe. Two points behind them and in third place were Liz Reid, Romany Foster, Catherine Chick and Sharon Manby. Fifty-six ladies played in the competition which was followed by lunch. Nearest the pin prizes went to Annie Johnston on the 8th, Julie Ruscoe on the 13th and Maureen Devenish on the 16th.

Controlling Curvature
A
s we look back at the last issue in which we started to look to be able to control our start lines and how important that is to lower handicaps and scores, we now move on to controlling the amount that the ball curves left or right during its flight. This is easiest done at set up, but some players do this during the swing, but for ease of understanding we will start with what actually needs to be happening to control the curve and this is easier to grasp at address. The chart below gives the FACE ANGLE and CLUBPATH degrees needed to create a shot that draws or fades back to the target line and also the rule of thumb to use when trying to practice.
What this gives is definitive numbers that produce the required curvature. So if you know one of the numbers you will now know the corresponding number. The hardest thing for amateurs to grasp in my opinion when trying to draw the golf ball is that at impact the face must be open to the target. The ball start line is influenced around 75/25
in favour of the face angle. That is the problem with trying to release the clubhead too much through impact, it is too hard to control and too easy to shut down the face, resulting in pulled shots or pull draws both of which start left of target. The image below shows the face angle right of target by 1 degree, and the body line set to swing the club 2 degrees right, setting the body line is in my opinion much easier and less destructive to golf swings than trying to alter the club path on the downswing .This setup should deliver a shot that returns right to left approximately to the intended target line.
If you fade the ball, the numbers are the same from the left. I hope that this helps you start to control your ball flight and lower scores If you need any assistance with your golf game, or just would like to ask me some questions, please feel free to call me or email me. Many thanks to local pro Bobby Keeble for his assistance. - 34 -

A CRACKER FROM DAVE otley’s Golf Club ten handicapper Dave Wren, achieved the golfers dream, and a N perfect present just before Christmas, by holing out from his tee shot for his first ever Hole in one. Playing in the Notley’s Golf Club annual “Christmas Cracker” event, Dave tee’d off on the Par 3 fourth hole, which can play over 170 yards, and flushed a fantastic 8 iron to see the ball land, and settle into the hole for an eagle one, and 4 points for the competition. In itself a wonderful achievement to have, and key for the Christmas Cracker, as Dave went on to win that competition, on countback, against 14 handicapper Gavin Hudson for quite a modest 35 Stableford points, and to take home the main prize – a “bad back nine” was how Dave described it! His dream shot will be immortalised in the Notleys Clubhouse on our Hole in One board on the wall, and he hasn’t stopped talking about it all year! Well done Dave, richly deserved and doubly impressive given that there were not even any Birdies on the 4th hole during this competition!
DAVID TAKES VICTORY avid Croger sealed a great win in the John Champ Christmas Vets Stableford at D Colchester Golf Club. Thirteen handicapper Croger returned 39 points to put him two shots clear of the rest of the field which was lead in on 37 points by Tim Rogers (12). Sharing Roger’s score and losing out after the countback were Peter Robinson (11) and Bill Eke (5). The competition, which was inaugurated by John Champ the long-time Secretary and sage of the section, is the Vets’ final golfing competition of the year and attracted a good sized field of 68 players on a bright day with the course playing long after the recent rain. Croger’s winning round was the model of consistency spoiled only by double bogies on the 9th and the 11th. A birdie two on the 16th added a little spring to his step and from then on he bogeyed-in to put himself comfortably ahead of the chasing pack. Andrew Crayston (26) along with John Dornan (6) and David Withnall (24) all returned 36 points to take the minor placings. Tim Rogers and the Club Captain,
David Croger with John Champ and the Vets' Captain Kevin Prince.
Jim Wilkinson picked up the nearest the pin prizes on the 8th and 16th. After the competition the Vets enjoyed a Christmas Lunch along with the prize-giving. The ladies are not having the best of luck with their competitions as following last week’s competition which was cancelled by heavy rain, this weeks was abandoned because of fog. Next week's Cakewalk is at least predicted to be played in good weather.

PGA Merchandise Show 2019 E
very January the golf industry descends on Orlando Florida for the PGA Merchandise Show which is quite simply the biggest golf show in the world. Pretty much every company you can think of (Taylor Made did not attend this year) will have booths showing their latest wares. Booth sizes range from 10ft x 10ft to basically small villages depending on the company. This years show was interesting for several reasons, technology yet again played a major part and companies that you have probably never heard of continue to show significant growth both of which I will elaborate on below.
TECHNOLOGY: From shot and swing measuring devices (launch monitors) to body movement tracking devices this area continues to grow. I’m sure you have either been on or seen launch monitors but maybe not so on the latter. Body tracking devices can consist of either sensors placed on certain parts of the body that record how that particular area of the body moves or pressure plates underneath the player to record how the weight/pressures moves during the swing.
Interestingly body sensors are generally displayed as an animated avatar (bit like movie technology) so the golfer does not see their own golf swing, simply how they move during the swing. Pressure plates track the movement of the weight during the swing, for example the shift between the left to the right foot or from toe to heel. I am a fan of pressure plates as I’m a great believer in that the base of any golf swing starts with the feet and if this is wrong then generally there will always be significant swing faults. From a launch monitor perspective quality of measurement continues to improve and new parameters are measured. BESPOKE GOLF COMPANIES: Firstly, I think it is important to point out that smaller more ‘bespoke’ golf companies have always been around...they just get eaten up by the marketing of the larger brands. They make some great product and in a lot of cases are less expensive then the household names. Reason for this is simple, if a professional player is paid $5,000,000 a year to play a certain brand then there is only one place that money can come from - it has to be built in to the price of a product. If you don’t pay the cash in the first place you don’t need the added expense to the consumer. Also, many of these companies offer really nice options like choosing the finish you would like or the colour of the head. Of course this means that there is a wait as this is done individually but it’s worth it. Everything from custom wedge grinding (the shape of the sole of the club) to bespoke golf shafts (ACCRA Golf Shafts) continue to grow in popularity. So, in a nutshell the golf industry wheel continues to turn and as I’ve said many times before every year many clubs promise to hit the ball further but don’t be concerned to look at some of the lesser known companies as you can get some great products. - 40 -

FLIGHTSCOPE vs QUINTIC BALL ROLL & ZEN GREEN STAGE f you were to ask anyone, would they like to see Ithethings about their golf swing, most of the time answer would be ‘yes’. Flightscope is my preferred use of launch monitor for swing and you can see and help individuals with their swing. When it comes to putting, for most this seems to be the least interesting aspect of the game to improve, yet it can be so much your saviour. It’s about how can we get that extra 10 to 20 yards with your driver as an example. I know that’s important for many reasons but would you prefer to hole more putts within 10ft and upto 20ft? Rather than say 2,3 or even 4 Putt. If you do, this can be helped by utilising Quintic. You can start to understand the many aspects that make up a Putting Stroke and develop strategy within this game of the game. I have improved my putting stroke using this equipment and knowing that my putter has needed to change. Also, there is green reading involved with your stroke and if you get within a degree of direction you are aiming you have a chance inside 10ft and half a degree inside 20ft. This can be helped using the Zen Green Stage as seen on Sky
Sports. Also, on cold evenings you don’t even have to go out of the house to improve at least 1 part of your game, that being the putting stroke. All aspects of golf rely on strategy, so if you would like to improve your putting I am doing some seminars over the coming months. The 1st seminars start on Saturday 16th February 3 till 5pm and Tuesday 5th March 7 till 9pm at The Essex Golf and Country Club using Quintic and the Zen Green Stage. A little tip, with the new change in the rules, go practice on the green with your flagsticks at your home club. If you are someone who comes up short maybe use it to feel you strike the Putt to the flagstick and if you already hit it firm it may help in your distance control. What have you got to lose! Top results in September compared to beneath which were January. The ticks and crosses show the worst result from 6 attempts and improvement in putting stroke during January means higher chance of holing more putts. Happy golfing for 2019,

Folding the Nitron is also a simple twostep process, with the unit collapsing in seconds to a compact size, ready to be stored. “This new nitrogen-powered open feature enables the Nitron to be the quickest and simplest cart to open in the industry,” said Pat Gallagher, Product Manager at Bag Boy. “We are excited to be able to pair this auto open user experience with a sleek, new updated look to add to the Bag Boy family of carts.” The Nitron also features TOP-LOK Technology, a patented bag-to-cart attachment system designed to securely lock a Bag Boy or Datrek bag onto a Bag Boy push cart, preventing the bag from twisting or turning and eliminating the need for cart straps. upper design. Already worn on tour by the likes of Rafa Cabrera Bello and Brandon Stone, the Fury offers a number of unique performance features, including a new internal fitting system called TruFIT, which focuses on fit, comfort and support. Designed from ‘the inside out’, the TruFIT System aims to deliver stability and comfort where it is most needed. This system comprises an all-new D3 outsole ensures a solid, rigid platform for lateral stability and traction, while a dual-density, foam-infused midsole delivers comfort and cushioning. Inside the shoe is a soft, stretchy, one-piece inner sleeve lasted underneath the insole board to provide a secure fit. An external cage system around the midfoot area adds structure to the upper and locks the foot in place, while also offering lateral support throughout the swing. The main element of the upper is made from full-grain, waterproof leather which boasts a waterproof membrane, while a vented toe section adds breathability. A flex layer of TPU combined with low-profile Pulsar cleats delivers heel-to-toe grip and flexibility, even when crouching down to read putts. Richard Fryer, Footjoy’s Footwear Director of Product Management, said: “With FJ Fury, we created a product that was designed from the inside-out. As a result, its TruFIT System balances lightweight, responsive support with a new dynamic outsole that delivers comfort and stability throughout your round.” Rafa Cabrera Bello, who has put the shoes straight into play, said: “I put the FJ Fury into play immediately because they look and feel so athletic. I’m amazed that a shoe that is so comfortable can also offer so much stability.” Fellow European Tour player Brandon Stone added: “I’m into my fitness, so I love the athletic look, and I’m also impressed with their breathability.” Available in a choice of white/red; navy/white, or black/red, the FJ Fury shoes have an RRP of £150 and go on sale from February 15. Galvin Green unveils military-themed Edge collection lvin Green is hoping to reach out to a younger, G more fashion-conscious serious golfer with the launch of its new military-inspired EDGE collection for 2019. The radical styling of the new range features an unconventional selection of jackets, jumpers, shirts, caps and belts in green, grey and blue colour variations, many with a fashionable camo look. In keeping with the military theme, each of the garments has a name that would resonate with service personnel, such as COMMANDO, GENERAL, COLONEL, MAJOR, ENSIGN and ARMED FORCE. Six months after the first EDGE range burst onto the golf apparel scene with 3D patterned bomber jackets, sweatshirts and bandanas, the 2019 range offers even more dynamic designs for on and off-course wear.
front inside, chest and sleeve pockets. The CAPTAIN BLUE jacket offers similar features in blue camo tones. The COMMANDO is styled as a camouflage grey crew-neck jacket in INSULA warm layer fabric. The full zip jacket features two front pockets and an elasticated hem and cuffs for comfort as well as warmth. Another standout INSULA jacket is the MAJOR, with an olive green, quilted design that resembles a jacket worn by a test pilot. It also has an unusual offcentre full-length zip. A similar design has been applied to the INTERFACE-1 full zip jacket called the SEMIBIKER. The extremely breathable garment can be worn 95 out of 100 rounds. There are also seven VENTIL8 shirts in the collection offering a high level of breathability, excellent moisture wicking properties and UPF20+. They include ARMED FORCE, a long sleeve shirt in plain blue with a camo band along the arms.
Wilson goes the distance with D7 Woods ilson Golf ’s new range of D7 metalwoods is W aimed at a wide spectrum of players looking for extra distance and forgiveness in all areas of their game.
“There was a brilliant reaction to the first EDGE range and we expect the latest collection to be just as popular with younger golfers,” said Global Brand Manager Nicholai Stein. “A lot of effort has been put into the distinctive styling across all the garments and accessories for a wardrobe that will stand-out on the European Tour this year thanks to brand ambassador Guido Migliozzi from Italy.” Leading the new collection from the front is the CAPTAIN GREEN waterproof full-zip jacket in GORE-TEX fabric with a lightweight mesh lining. In addition to its striking styling in camo greens and greys, the jacket features articulated sleeves; adjustable cuffs;
The D7 driver features RE-AKT Technology, a combination of superlight design and reactive face technology, which combines to deliver faster clubhead speed and increased ball speed for longer distance. It also features a lightweight composite crown that boasts a layer of Dupont Kevlarsandwiched between two layers of carbon that serves lower the centre of gravity and dampen down vibrations and improve acoustics. The D7 driver is offered in three loft options – 9o, 10.5o and 13o– each of which has a slightly different weight set up to encourage the right combination of launch angle and spin to optimise carry and distance. The 9o model will suit players with fast swings, with the weighting placed forward in the head for lower launch and spin; the 10.5o option will work best for those with a moderate-to-fast swings, with the weighting in the middle of the head for a higher launch and spin; while the 13o model has the weight placed further back and towards the heel to promote high launch and a slight draw bias, and is ideal for players with slow-to-moderate swings. There is a matching set of fairway woods – 3 (15˚), 5 (18˚) and 7 (21˚) – that feature stainless steel face inserts to create a thin, hot face for increased feel and distance, plus a range of D7 hybrids available in 19˚, 22˚, 25˚ and 28˚ lofts. www.wilson.com - 49 -

Golf Pride extends Taylormade launches Plus4 Technology to ‘MySpider’ personalised Tour Velvet grip putter programme
olf Pride has broadened its product range for 2019 G following the introduction of the new Tour Velvet Plus4 grip. More than 90 per cent of Tour players build up their grip to promote lighter grip pressure and generate more power. The Tour Velvet Plus4 grips simulate the feel of four-layers of extra tape build-up, creating a larger lower-hand profile that is preferred by Tour players. The re-engineered grip optimises high-performance materials while maintaining the iconic Tour Velvet feel. The grip maintains the recognised plus-sign texture with an increased dimple-to-surface ratio creating additional traction and enhanced durability. “More than 80 per cent of Tour players trust their games to Golf Pride, so we understand the preferences of the best players in the world better than anyone,” commented Golf Pride Product Manager, Bruce Miller. “Hands down, the preferred grip that Tour players choose to play is the Tour Velvet. We have taken the most popular grip on Tour over the last two decades and tweaked it slightly based off insights from professionals on how they are customising their performance equipment. Now all players can benefit from this design, while maintaining the trusted feel and performance they’re accustomed to in the Tour Velvet grip.” For more information, visit www.golfpride.com
aylorMade Golf has launched a bespoke putter T design service that enables golfers to customise almost every element of their chosen putter from the brand’s Spider range. Mizuno rolls out first global ball launch with RB Tour range izuno has launched two new tour-calibre golf M balls, RB Tour and RB Tour X, the first time the company has introduced golf balls globally. Both models, which go on sale in February, promise optimum greenside feel plus excellent performance in the wind thanks to a new drag-reducing Cone Profile Dimple (C Dimple), which is the result of 12 years of wind tunnel testing at Mizuno’s test facility in Yoro, Japan. The C-Dimple creates more trigger points to keep fast flowing air close to the ball’s surface for longer – simultaneously reducing drag and strengthening trajectory. Under laboratory testing, a configuration of 360 Cone Dimples was discovered the most effective at producing a controllable, penetrating driver flight, and noticeable distance gains on full iron shots. The RB Tour and RB Tour X’s four-piece construction blends 360 C-Dimples with a hightraction urethane cover, an Ionomer mantle layer, and a
graduated hardness Butadiene Dual Core. The RB Tour model’s very soft compression offers lower driver spin to suit more downward angles of attack, while the RB Tour X is geared more towards mid driver spin for flat to upward attack angles. Mizuno has had golf balls available in Europe and the Far East, but never before in the US. “We’ve been lobbied on every social media channel to introduce the ball to the US market, but we specifically wanted to wait for this ball,” added Llewellyn.

BILL CALLS IT A DAY
A
t 82, Bill Pasfield has decided after 20 years service to take a back seat in organising the Cadet Section at Boyce Hill Golf Club. The most recent Cadet AGM saw a presentation made to Bill as a thank you for all of his years serving as the Cadet Section Organiser. Bill first became involved over 20 years ago and has seen a number of his own grandchildren come through the ranks and go on to play to high standards with his granddaughter Frankie holding the Ladies Course record and representing the County. Bill has served as Captain of the Club in 1998 and played a part in a winning Leslie Wood Team. Bill was instrumental in the construction of a Cadet Room which includes Sky TV, a pool table, table tennis along with a Trophy Cabinet, an area of the Club that the Cadets can call their own. He called upon enlisting the help of numerous members from the Club and together the Cadet room was constructed. Bill has now decided the time has come to hand the reigns over to Andy Taylor, who has been involved alongside Bill for a number of years. Bill has vowed that he will not be a
stranger, and will be seen at the Cadet Section’s Major days. Boyce Hill and it’s Cadets owe Bill a great deal of gratitude and on behalf of all of the Members at the Club, Bill we thank you.
