O

ver the last 25 years the Abridge Golf Club Ladies’ Section has raised close to £1 million in aid of many different and worthy charities. This year our nominated Charity is King George and Queens Hospitals Charity. The aim of the Charity is never to subsidise the NHS but to provide those items the NHS cannot supply. Our focus this year is for the Dementia Wards at Queens Hospital. We all know of someone or someone’s family struggling with the challenges of dementia, in fact our catchment area is home to the largest number of over 75 year olds in the whole of Greater London.

2018 Brings in New Changes for Bentley Golf Club

I

n 2004 an opportunity arose for Bentley Golfers to buy the existing Golf Club and make it a Members Club. After weeks of negotiating terms and legal practicalities the club became a Members Club. In subsequent years the Club ploughed money into the course and today the Course has risen to reach the dizzy heights of being the 8th best Golf Course in Essex. Trevor Martin the Course Director said ‘this is an amazing achievement is such a short amount of time’ The Clubhouse on the other hand could not be compared in the same light as the Golf Course. After a game of Golf, Players would tend to leave, as the Clubhouse was not conducive to a warming social scene and it was not attracting new members to the Club. As a consequence a major refurbishment programme was developed and after receiving the appropriate planning permissions, building work commenced in August 2017. A Design Committee was established and they paid particular attention to the needs of the Golfers and as a start built additional toilet facilities within the Spike Bar area. The Lounge area currently being worked on by the Builders has been extended to accommodate a larger functional area for use by Golfers and the public at large. The kitchen area has been redesigned and

the Bar area will receive a major makeover. Jim Mahoney Chairman of Bentley Golf Club said these are exciting times for Bentley it has always been my ambition to see the Clubhouse

refurbished. The work to-date has not been intrusive and every day you can see a positive difference. The Works Schedule is slightly ahead of plan and at this stage we have made the extension water tight and work can now begin on the internal decoration. The Clubhouse is expected to be completed early March 2018 with a Grand opening for the Bentley Golfers taking place in April 2018. The overall extension will allow Bentley to cater for much larger Parties including Weddings, Wakes and Birthday Celebrations to name but a few where previously there was limited capability. In addition the Spike Bar with its new furniture will have a much cosier feel for existing Golfers and will have the added benefit of attracting new Members. All of the above is to ensure that Bentley Golf Club remains a true Members Club and is able to continue to invest in its future. Anyone interested in finding out more or joining Bentley Golf Club can contact the Club Secretary Mark Gallop on 01277 373179 or email secretary@bentleygolfclub.com

GOLF SEASON IS JUST ROUND THE CORNER! W

e've made it through and we are all looking forward to the weather getting a bit better, the days getting longer and the courses drying out. Theres lots to look forward to in 2018!!! Here are somethings you could be thinking about in February.

SWING STUDIO AT COLNE VALLEY

I would like to invite you to work on your game this winter in our Swing Studio equipped with Sky Trak Launch monitor. An initial 2 hour consultation to see where your game is currently and we can then make a bespoke plan of improvement. Cost is ÂŁ50 for the 2 hour session. Please get in contact with Matt on 07808 003 619 to book yours.

n Have a coaching session and get the basics sharp - If you've had some time off over the winter you want to get the year off to a good start. Have a coaching session to look at your basics as they may have slacked off over the winter.

n Have your clubs checked out - Get your grips and loft and lies checked as these are essential. Plus, get fitted and refine any new equipment. See your PGA Pro for help with this as most are expert club fitters as well. n Have a look at the schedule Most competition and club schedules will be coming out for the new season now. Have a look through and see what events you'd like to play in, put in your diary so that you have something to work towards. - 12 -

It’s Time To Start The Engines ... W

ith the 2018 season soon upon us it’s time to start getting ready, so I thought I would give you a few easy tips to kick start your year: 1 PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE when you do get time to hit balls use it wisely rather than just practicing your swing faults. 2 SPEND SOME TIME ON THE CHIPPING AND PUTTING GREEN - without doubt your short game suffers when you don’t play as much so spend a little time getting it up to speed. 3 GET YOUR GRIPS IN GOOD SHAPE give them a wash with warm water and a scrubbing brush and then dry with a clean towel, if they still don’t feel good get them re-gripped. 4 CHECK YOUR LOFT AND LIES this is a double edged sword, it may be they got knocked out of spec last year through play but it can also be that your set-up has changed a little so your clubs need to fit your new stance rather than your old. 5 MAKE A PLAN look at the schedule of events you will play in and plan accordingly. This could be as simple as knowing when you will have a little extra practice time or maybe when to change your equipment. Hopefully these will put you on the right track to a successful season, if at first you don’t play well don’t panic - you are probably just a little rusty! that in mind 2018 will see me running a Research Project into how ALLLL with G GA N I N L I L different shaft and head combinations interact with different swing types. I am L L A C CA S S looking for golfers of all ages and abilities to help test not only the latest but also As you may already be aware I manage several shaft companies for Europe so

Remarkable Youngsters Give Golf a New Voice

A

!

group of 11 remarkable young people are set to give golf a fresh, new voice. They are Young Ambassadors for England Golf and the Golf Foundation and through their own stories, enthusiasm and love of the sport, they will challenge negative perceptions and play a part in getting more people talking about and playing the game. The ambassadors range in age from 10 to 22 and include school pupils, students, a volunteer coach, a trainee PGA professional, a would-be PE teacher and a trainee doctor. They’re all prepared to do what it takes to inspire others, whether it’s speaking at meetings, blogging or vlogging, getting involved with national campaigns or helping to organise events. “They’re an amazing group,” said Lee Dolby, England Golf ’s Young People Manager. “They’re ! bringing to life our Children and Young People’s Plan for Golf and helping us achieve our vision of inspiring a love of golf that lasts a lifetime. By sharing their stories they’ll help raise awareness of golf, show the positive impact of young people and prove that it’s a game for all.” Alice Lowe, Golf Foundation Regional Development Officer and lead on volunteering, added: “Each member of the group is so enthusiastic about changing the negative perceptions of golf, and supporting our ambition to help young people enjoy the playing and personal benefits of golf by making it inclusive and fun.” The ambassadors recently got together for a training session involving the Youth Sport Trust and the Sport and Recreation Alliance. It

was a chance to share their stories and experiences and similar themes emerged right across the age range. They spoke of how golf has given them confidence and inspired their career ambitions, how they want to work to make the game truly inclusive and their passion to show that it’s not an ‘old man’s’ game. Here, two of them talk about golf: Ysobel Lush is, at the age of 16, a veteran volunteer, having helped to recruit girl golfers for three years with Girls Golf Rocks in Essex. The sport and her experience has shaped her life and ambition to be a PE teacher. She says: “I’ve been playing golf since I was little and I’ve made all my best friends through golf. It’s made me what I am and what I want to be.” Emma Anderson was England Golf ’s 2017 Young Ambassador of the Year in recognition of her extensive volunteering. But the university student reckons she has benefited from golf: “It’s made me so much more confident and helped me know that I want to work in sport.” She’s upbeat about the way golf is changing, but says the challenge is getting the wider world to recognise this. “When I talk to people my age about golf there is a perception that it’s older people who are making the decisions, but within golf a lot of young people do have a voice that is listened to. The Obliques Make A Better

Swing E

very golfer wants to hit the ball further and with more POWER! One fine way of helping this is to strengthen and build the obliques. In fact, if these muscles on the sides of your stomach are weak, you'll really struggle to make solid contact with the ball. When you swing efficiently, you should load your obliques as you coil towards the top of your backswing, elongating (stretching) them to achieve the correct position at the top. In the downswing, your obliques, together with the psoas major, are highly activated, creating a crunch-like position as you extend your hips and tilt your pelvis, while keeping your chest over the golf ball. To put it very simply, the stronger your obliques are, the more power and speed you will achieve in your swing. So how do you start strengthening and building the obliques? The next exercise is an example if an oblique exercise but I highly recommend you seek a professional and get a golf specific bespoke exercise programme.

MUSCLES OF THE TRUNK Pectoralis major

Rectus abdominis External oblique

Internal oblique

Transverse abdominis

THE RUSSIAN TWIST: Using a Swiss ball, lay supine on the ball with the head neck and top shoulders only on the ball, hips straight and the glutes squeezed to keep the hips up.Whilst keeping the eyes to the ceiling, hold the hands together above the chest and turn using the obliques from one side to the other. Find this exercise on YouTube for a video demonstration.

Orsett Golf Club Improvements

C

!

!

!

ontinuing with their ever developing course improvements, this Winter has seen the greenstaff at Orsett Golf Club tackle two major projects as well as keeping the ever busy and dry course in a playable condition. On hole 13 all 4 bunkers have been reshaped and re constructed with one of the bunkers moved by nearly 30 yards to bring it into play more on this medium length par 4.

Although challenging work for all of the team the progress throughout this winter has been excellent. The 15th, the longest of the par 3’s at Orsett has had it’s tee, stripped, raised by over a metre, levelled and been made nearly twice as large as before, despite the weather delaying this project the team hope to have the area in play by the end of February.

A First for Essex

! !

O

rsett and Boyce Hill Golf Clubs have joined together in 2018 to bring together two of the Essex County Order of Merit events, introducing a new 72 hole trophy that will be carrying World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points. Originally the Threadgill Trophy and Boyce Hill Challenge Bowl were played at opposite ends of the calendar, however, both Clubs have altered their schedules to enable the introduction of this exciting new event, The Estuary Trophy, this is a first for 2 Clubs in Essex to offer WAGR points for an event.

!

will be the Threadgill Trophy a 36 hole ! First up scratch open, played at Orsett on Friday 4th May, the following Thursday 10th Boyce Hill will host their Challenge Bowl, also a 36 hole scratch open, players who play in both events will have their totals combined to declare an inaugural winner of the Estuary Trophy as well as WAGR points to their name. Entry to each event will be £45.00, however, if you enter both events you can save yourself £10. Entry forms are now available from either the Essex Golf Union site or either Clubs website.

Conditions Good for Darren and Mick

G

ood course conditions met the large field for the Playgolf Colchester four-ball better-ball competition. Understandably, the green staff took the decision to make all bunkers GUR for the day as the recent extreme wet weather and the horrendous weather on the day took its toll. However, this didn’t dampen the spirits of the field or winners: Darren

Mick Farr.

Kerr and Mick Farr. The Darren pair were buoyant and Kerr. plotted their route in expert fashion, taking advantage of the receptive greens and good roll on offer. They saw their laser-precision approach and short-game rewarded with multiple birdie chances, many of which they duly converted. The pair went on to amass an amazing 46 points to take the victory by a stretch. Trevor Hollingsworth and John Chaplin carded a great back nine to take second place on countback from Gavin Miklaucich and Alan Pearman after both carded 43 points.

Golfing Pledge A

nother golfing season is upon us and as we enter 2018 I enter my 40th year as a professional and coach. I have seen many changes over my career. In 1978 we played with bladed irons, wooded club heads that were the playing size of a modern day 5 wood and of course steel shafts. The balls had soft centres, wrapped with rubber bands followed by a soft rubberized outer shell made of Balata which split at the merest hint of an off centre hit. We wore spikes so the greens weren’t as good, no video for swing analysis let alone a trackman which can supply the most detailed information, and in spite of all the 2018 version of technology the average handicap is pretty much the same. We don’t seem to be improving.

As I have continued to grow as a coach and I definitely fit into Danial Coyle’s the Talent Code that you should always take a lesson with a teacher with grey hair, I can assure you mine would be grey if I had some!! a more rounded approach has to take place for a golfer to improve. The game itself has not changed over its history so every player trying to improve their performance has to hit the ball, chip pitch and putt the ball, think and assimilate situations that are ever changing on the course, manage their emotions as well as have equipment that is aiding them and that fits correctly. These days I find myself more and more on the course with my clients helping with not only the physical processes but the mental and managerial ones as well. I recognised how important this is having returned to marching the fairways playing Senior Professional Golf.

G

olfstream, the UK’s leading supplier of lithium batteries for the golfer, have launched their new Caddycell Leisure Lamp - the must-have accessory for anyone needing a powerful, portable and practical light source. Boasting a powerful 13-lamp LED bulb, housed in a robust, waterproof casing, the CaddyCell Leisure Lamp is perfect for taking on camping holidays, to music festivals, night time fishing or any activity where a reliable and rechargeable light source is required.

The handy Leisure Lamp is designed to be used in conjunction with Caddycell’s portable lithium battery, which is fitted with a built-in USB port that makes it ideal for outdoor activities where a long-lasting, mobile power source is essential. When connected to a Caddycell battery, the Leisure Lamp can deliver up to 30 hours of continuous light, plus 14 full recharges of a mobile phone, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who are ‘off-grid’ for any length of time. Already one of the most popular batteries for powered golf trolleys, thanks to its ultra-compact

size and weight – it tips the scales at just 2.1kg – CaddyCell’s lithium battery can also charge up laptops, tablets, smartphones and other devices, such as GPS handsets, radios, air pumps, and any other type of portable technology that can be powered from a USB connection. The CaddyCell LiFePO4 16ah lithium battery is wrapped in a black neoprene cover and the USB point is safely protected from the elements via a flap with velcro fastening. Lithium batteries are infinitely superior to lead acid batteries because of their high specific energy capacity, long cycle life, compact size, light weight, superior thermal and chemical stability, enhanced safety, improved cost performance, and enhanced charge and discharge rates. The Caddycell lithium battery can be fully charged from empty in just three hours. Golfstream’s managing director, Derek Richford, said: "Having your own power source is essential if you want to keep your smartphones, tablets, fridges and other devices, charged up when you’re offgrid. Having a reliable light source is, of course, essential for all outdoor enthusiasts, and the CaddyCell Leisure Lamp is a simple, practical and cost-effective way of ensuring that you’re never in the dark when you’re away from mains power.” The CaddyCell Leisure Lamp has an RRP of £18.00, making it great value, as well supremely practical, choice. Golstream’s CaddyCell lithium battery has an RRP of £189, and is offered with a full three-year guarantee and comes with a charger, neoprene cover, and, for those who also plan to use it for golf, connectors to fit almost any make of electric golf trolley. Crowds Gather for Captains Drive In at PlayGolf

T

he annual Captain’s Drive in saw the overflow carpark in use, with the usual large baying crowds gathered around the nervous captains from each section as their ceremonial drives are taken to see in their 2018 tenures. Taking on the task of being a captain is not one anyone takes lightly, with a lot to consider before taking on the busy role, such as committing to the yearly schedule and evening events. This year’s Club Captain Rob Cornish led off the field with the first

ceremonial drive with party poppers and horns blowing in the fun atmosphere, Senior Captain Steven Dale followed up with Ladies Captain Pauline Jordan then Junior Captain Conor Garvey completed the set with the longest drive of the captain’s.. Afterwards the field gathered in the Amphora suite to enjoy an after round meal and presentations held by Club Captain Rob Cornish.

PITCHING T

he typical winters are running true with the rain and softer ground conditions but don’t despair these conditions are ideal to work on your distance control with no run. I will give you a simple winter drill to help you to make your practice productive when pitching. Many golfers can become obsessed with their Distance Measuring devices (DMD) lasering the flag with pin point accuracy, however we can tend

to forget part of the process which includes the following vital points. n Carry distance this is not the total yardage n Landing area (target not always the flag) n Visualisation of the shot including the trajectory n Pre-shot swing incorporating feel for the shot in hand

Distance Measuring devices are useful addition to the golfers equipment but I am not a huge advocate for use with the finesse shots. I believe we can train “feel” utilising a variety of practice methods. I would start your road to improve your Pitching focusing upon using a similar tempo for each distance faced with. Many players believe rapid body hands or arm acceleration is required to advance the ball those extra yardages or rapid deceleration. However both faults can cause strike issues and inconsistencies when pitching. Try this drill which Martin Hall Host of Golf Channel contributor and long time friend suggests, it provides a feeling of the consistent dropping speed of the arms during the swing. Allow your arms to drop freely to your sides from an upright position as shown in the main images, with no conscious speed. This “deadweight” feeling is one we should try to replicate when pitching. I hope this article helps you to focus on a different area when pitching, remember it is not just Sarah Bennett technique I am looking at. !

Golf Club’s Fundraising Events are a Swinging Success

Millers Barn C.H.A.P.S. Seniors

G

olfers at the Garon Park Golf Complex on Eastern Avenue, Southend, are stepping into 2018 with more than just their golfing achievements under their belts - they are starting the year off with a huge donation of £7383.89 to Southend’s Homeless Charity, HARP. Last January the club named HARP as their ‘Charity of the Year’ and they have been holding fundraising events throughout 2017 to support the local charity that helps over 1,000 people facing homelessness every year.

T

he C.H.A.P.S. seniors held their presentation night and on the night a raffle raised four hundred pounds. Mike Farrer won the right to choose which charity the money would go to, and his choice was Cancer Research. A presentation was arranged at Millers Barn at which Mike Farrer presented the cheque to Darren Couchman Cancer Research U.K’s representative.

Ladies Club Captain Debbie Wood said “the 2017 Section Captains at Garon Park Golf have been proud to support HARP during their captaincy year, and are very pleased to have raised £7383.89 for such a worthwhile charity.“ HARP provide safe, warm accommodation for 174 people that might otherwise be sleeping rough each and every night, as well as over 60,000 meals a year, and they provide long-term solutions to help people in Southend recover from crisis, and back into independent living. Lisa Walton, Community Fundraiser at HARP said “fundraising can be so much fun as Garon Park Golf Complex have shown over the last year. It means so much to those that are going through such a hard time to know that the local community are behind them, and we are thrilled to receive such a generous donation from the golf club which will help us continue to reach out to those most in need this winter.” If you would like to fundraise for HARP contact them on 01702 615 834 on visit www.harpsouthend.org.uk/get-involved

Well Done Ladies of Burnham

T

he ladies of Burnham on Crouch Golf Club like to raise money for charity while playing their golf. This year was no exception and lady captain Mel Lewis named her charity as Fairleigh Hospice. She presented a cheque for £3163: 64 to local representative for Fairleigh, Debbie de Boltz. She was supported by some of the ladies of the section and new Captain Mary Hull.

Holding the Cheque from left Mel, Debbie and Mary. In October, Breast cancer month, they also raised £615:32 for Lady McAdden Breast screening trust in Southend.

GOLF TIPS FOR AROUND THE COURSE As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easy-to-understand. Thanks to the structure with sections from tee to green, golfers can find the information they need in an instant. A quick fix guide for eliminating mistakes makes the practical ring-bound water-repellent booklet the ideal accompaniment on the course.

The tips are based on many years of competition experience by leading golf professionals. We’d be willing to bet that “Golf Trouble Shots and Quick Fix Guide” will help you save a number of strokes on your next round.

Thorndon Park Christmas Fayre Pro-Am ‘Shakespear Writes the Script at Thorndon’

The winning team receiving prizes from Paul De’ath – Captain of Thorndon Park Golf Club, Chris Cutchie – Captain of Essex PGA and Colin Reynolds – Secretary of Essex PGA.

T

he annual Christmas Pro-Am was again played at Thorndon Park Golf Club and as usual there was a waiting list to get on the start sheet. 29 Professionals with their amateur teams eventually enjoyed relatively benign weather conditions and a golf course in excellent condition. The early lead was taken by ‘man in form’ Robert Coles from Maylands who, despite an ugly 8 at the par five 11th hole, followed that with four birdies in 5 holes only to bogey the difficult 18th. His score of 1 under par held the lead for most of the day until Brett Taylor from Rivenhall returned an impressive 3 under par 68 which looked like taking the first prize; however, that score was eventually beaten by Andy Shakespear from the Warren Golf and Country Club who recorded 6 birdies in a very impressive 4 under par 67.

The Pro-Am was won by the team of Brett Taylor with amateurs Ron Sullivan, Patrick Bowler and Paul Wilkinson with a great stableford score of 93 points.

What Gear is Your Mind in? W

hat a great start to 2018 for Race to Dubai champion Tommy Fleetwood in retaining his Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. It’s interesting how often players are able to retain a trophy, win a tournament they have previously won and win at a course they've had success at before. Some players play well at certain times of the year, each year.

Neutral thinking deals with reality, it’s ‘evidence’ based. This is the key…EVIDENCE! A great question to ask on the golf course before a shot is as follows; Is it possible? Could it be possible to roll in a 30 foot putt? Would you consider it possible to hit the green from 200 yards out? If the answer is yes, it’s ‘possible’ that you have achieved this before and are remembering that shot in your mind! If it was possible back then, backed up with that EVIDENCE, then it is possible now. Positive thinking is more one of ‘hoping’ for better things, generally fantasy based! You may have heard people on the golf course (I’m sure not yourself) saying ‘All I need to do, is hit it perfect, keep it low with a little right to left, through the small gap in the bush and I’ll be on the green’! Now this may have worked for Seve, but has it worked for you? Whatever the outcome, that will form your ‘evidence’ for the future ... However, still better than being negative

of course! So, how can you use neutral thinking to improve YOUR game. Golfers of all levels from touring professionals to beginners should apply neutral thinking to their game to improve performance and enjoyment. Recalling situations of past success (evidence), can help you to see-out a victory in the Club Championship, clear the water hazard from the tee (we’re thinking about the 3rd at Thorndon Park here!), or hole the 3ft putt to win a match. It’s important to recognise what can knock us ‘out of neutral’. Trying to ‘forecast’ or what will happen on the course, how we 'should' be playing, making predictions, poor reactions to shots are examples. Playing golf when not exactly playing to plan can then create anxiety, an agitated, congested mind and not a calm one. Hardly a recipe for consistent golf, hardly creating an environment for you to be able to ‘stay in the present moment’ and to enjoy your round. The start of the season is a great time to set goals (make them realistic), of how we would like our golf to go this year. Now do this to a degree. Try to set-up your environment for your improvement/enjoyment, as an example, lessons, golf days etc. But when you're actually 'playing' golf commit to your routines and processes as talked about in previous editions. So, rather than being too specific in your goal setting this season, try going down the road of 'lets see what happens’ and stay in neutral! Enjoy your golf in 2018 and remember, contact us, or ask your Club Manager/Pro to do so for full details about holding a Mind Zone workshop at YOUR club. www.themind-zone.com

Srixon Reveals New ThirdGeneration AD333 Tour Golf Ball

S

rixon®, a global leader in highperformance golf equipment and a brand dedicated to improving your game is proud to introduce the new third-generation AD333 TOUR® golf ball. This all-new ball model delivers tour performance for golfers with moderate swing speeds. The Srixon AD333 TOUR is available in pure white and officially launches in the UK on 2nd February. Suggested retail price will be £29.99 per dozen. With the new AD333 TOUR, Srixon has focused on developing a tour-caliber golf ball in a lowercompression design that helps moderate swing speed golfers achieve more distance on full shots, while maintaining the excellent feel and greenside spin performance of its Z-STAR® series offerings. It was designed especially for skilled golfers with moderate speeds who demand the performance and feel of a tour ball; the lower compression allows these players to achieve optimal distance on full shots. Golfers can expect the AD333 TOUR to deliver exceptional total performance from tee-to-green, including tremendous iron distance and tour-level greenside spin control.

etting new standards in combined MOI and forgiveness for a driver, PING today introduced the new G400 Max driver, along with the G700 irons, Glide 2.0 Stealth wedges and PING Vault 2.0 putters. The new products are now available for pre-order. “We’re on a mission to help golfers play better and we know that starts with clubs that deliver across-theboard performance gains,” said John K. Solheim, PING president. “The new G400 Max is engineered with the same technology as the original G400 but we’ve optimised the size to gain even more forgiveness, which leads to tighter dispersion and lower scores. With the addition of the Max to the G400 driver family, golfers now have four fitting options to ensure they’re getting the most out of their game. New Callaway X Forged UT Irons: Tour Performance

C

allaway, the #1 Iron Brand in Golf, has today introduced the new X Forged UT Utility Clubs, boasting traditional long iron looks with modern Tour level performance and forgiveness. Sitting alongside the recently launched X Forged and Apex MB Iron ranges, these new UT Irons are primarily targeted at the more accomplished player having been developed with significant input from Callaway’s team of global Staff Professionals. X Forged UT Irons are available in 18°, 21° and 24° lofts with Project X stepless steel shafts and feature a strategically-positioned CG location, sitting directly in line with the centre of the face, promoting straighter ball flights and maximum ball speed. Manufactured with a highly forgiving, hollow body construction, X Forged UT Irons use the company’s proprietary, industry-leading, 360 Face Cup Technology that increases ball speed, offering greater efficiency on centre hits, and minimising distance loss on off-centre hits. “The UT’s lower, more penetrating ball flight and less curve, are part of a proven recipe that creates straight, powerful shots. Adding our 360 Face Cup also pushes COR to the legal limit, for increased ball speed.” www.callawaygolf.com

Odyssey Rolls Out New Red and Black

O

dyssey, the #1 Putter Brand in Golf, has today strengthened its O-Works line-up by launching an extensive range of new head shapes. Building on the success of O-Works and O-Works Red, the latter of which debuted in July last year, Odyssey has gone a stage further and developed an allnew, 12-model O-Works Black line as well as adding six new models to its existing Red putter range. Featuring revolutionary Microhinge Face Insert Technology, these new putters will provide great feel as well as imparting more topsin to get the ball into a better roll at impact. The 2018 Black and Red ranges also feature new ‘toe-down’ O-Works Mallets, that naturally rotate like a blade during the putting stroke. These models will appeal to golfers who love a mallet look, but have historically struggled for consistency with face-balanced models (normally missing to the right). ‘Toe-down’ designs address this performance issue, dialling in better-than-blade forgiveness and alignment, whilst retaining a similar stroke path offered by a blade. In addition, face-balanced putter models remain, in both mallet and blade, for the golfer that favours a straightback/straight forward pendulum putting stroke. “We also know that if the best players in the world liked them and putted well, our customers were definitely going to love them too.” The line includes the new O-Works Black Jailbird Mini, used by South African Callaway Staffer, Branden Grace, to shoot to lowest round in Major championship history, a 62 in last year’s Open at Royal Birkdale. www.odysseygolf.com

Crail Golfers Give Boost to Wounded Veterans US Marine Corps veteran Sam Shockley plays golf at Crail with the aid of a SoloRider cart (photo John Stewart).

P

am Smith, captain of Crail Golfing Society, had a welcome New Year’s gift for St Andrews Legacy, a charity that helps ill and injured military veterans towards recovery through golf, when she presented it with a cheque for £1000. Pam, who is entering her second year as captain of the seventh oldest club in the world, said: “Going for a game of golf might not sound like much, but it can be life-changing; St Andrews Legacy saw this was needed and we are thrilled to be involved in something that makes a difference.” The donation was made possible by golfers at Crail using specially adapted carts called SoloRiders, which enable players with mobility issues to continue with the game. Two SoloRiders are available for use on either the Tom Morris-designed Balcomie Links or Craighead Links, Gil Hanse’s contemporary classic.

The cheque was accepted by St Andrews Legacy participant David Gilles, a former Royal Highland Fusilier from Glasgow, who was severely injured in 2013 by a blast from an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan that killed three of his colleagues. David said: “I was in a wheelchair for six months and then on crutches for another year. St Andrews Legacy encouraged me to take up golf and I am now a member of a society that travels and plays all over Scotland.” St Andrews Legacy founder Graham Proctor thanked Crail members and visitors for their help and good will. “We host three week-long events each year for serving or retired personnel from the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA – Crail is always our first port of call. “The club has supported our desire to make golf truly accessible for veterans and now anyone facing physical challenges and looking to play the game again has the freedom to get back out there.” - 56 -

Warren Sargent, PGA Professional based at The Essex G&CC and Coach at Epping Golf Club. Warren is a Zen Putting Mechanic (A Complete Putting Strategy). Coach to all level of golfer including Touring Pro’s. M: 07888 828 760 E: wozthegolfpro1@gmail.com

ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH YOUR BALANCE, CO-ORDINATION AND FOCUS?

D

o you lose balance or move out of position during or after you complete your movements on varying shots, i.e. Swing, Pitching, Chipping and Putting. You are being helped to understand your techniques but feel frustrated to get on top of it and/or you are practicing or playing and losing your way whilst doing your golf? If this is the case, there is a definite reason why this is occurring and I have been finding out the reasons why! In the last 6 months I have spent time with a Bio-Mechanic starting from the feet and finding areas of your body that is either limited or don't move properly, a gentleman who diagnoses people who have areas of their Central Nervous System that are immature which can affect your balance, co-ordination and why you may suffer with stress, anxiety and worry and I have also become a Mind Factor Coach developing a different approach to improving movement, people's focus and improving a better mindset culture. I have also invested in a Flightscope and Quintic Ball Roll Launch Monitors to show how you are improving by what you are improving within your own minds and your body movement. What I have found is this, technical information is important, but what we need to do is improve how our bodies and minds work. I now am in a position to offer a service that I hope is unique to each individual. This service involves my initial assessments and then if required passing to a network of individuals to improve specific issues that need addressing. This also involves Club fitting. I can help with body movements that are causing specific issues and with the Mind Factor, well the changes you can make here can be life changing as well as improving your Golf. If your brain is not wired correctly, what chance has the body in

performing at whatever level of Golf you play! Please try this exercise from the pictures. Stand looking at a point for about 10 seconds with your feet in a comfortable position and sense your movements with your eyes open. Then do this same exercise with your eyes closed and again what happens to your movements. Write down what happens, as if you are moving or losing balance then there is a specific problem that will cause you issues.

Please contact me if you would like a different approach to your game. Happy Golfing,

Juniors are the Future of Golf

T

his comment is widely used in the golfing industry but rarely taken to heart. Across the country we are seeing numbers of juniors playing golf decline which is such a shame and many club officials accept this situation. Well, at SharpShooters junior golf academy they do not accept this and have created a system which is a flourishing junior academy and has now been recognised as the

largest junior golf academy in Essex and most likely in the county. To help introduce junior golfers into the game and encouraging them to further their golfing career, the club, junior organiser and professionals have to be working closely together to help achieve these results. In the last 2 years, SharpShooters Junior Golf Academy at Elsenham Golf and Leisure has gone from having just 30 children having weekly lessons to 200 children having weekly golf lessons at the club. The Academy’s coaches also reach out to local schools and are currently delivering to another 100 children every week. The club have also designed a 6 hole SharpShooter course (perfect length for junior golfers) and recently invested in an Adventure Golf course (designed by European Golf) which no doubt will draw more families to the golf club for possibly their first time. This is set to be open this year. They welcome juniors of all ages and abilities to the Academy and play in the extremely popular PlayDay events as well as our free summer workshops! The next PlayDay event on March 25th. Check out all the upcoming events on Sharp Shooters Facebook page. PowaKaddy Announced as UK #1 Electric Trolley Brand in 2017 T he world’s No.1 electric trolley brand, PowaKaddy, has been confirmed again as market-leader in the UK electric trolley sector. According to Golf DataTech, the golf industry research specialists, PowaKaddy outsold all other electric trolley manufacturers put together by units and by value in 2017. “We’ve had another excellent year and its testament to the work of everyone connected with the brand,” said David Catford, PowaKaddy’s CEO. “Our UK sales grew by 40% year-on-year thanks to retailers making the most of our exciting new product launches and the ongoing impact of the switch to Lithium.” Headlining the pioneering brand’s successful 2017 was the introduction of the Compact C2, which proved the most successful electric trolley launch in the UK market for over four years. “We’d like to thank every single one of our customers who have played a crucial role in promoting PowaKaddy and helping to take the brand to the clear No.1 position in the market,” said David Catford. “Whilst we’re incredibly pleased with the past year, we’re equally proud of

the high-profit margins our trade partners continue to enjoy. We look forward to working closely with our partners moving forward, and our new product range promises to offer even more fantastic opportunities to grow further in 2018 and beyond.” Golf DataTech’s year-end report also confirms that, in comparison to its nearest competitor, PowaKaddy delivered higher average retail prices and margins for its retailers, whilst offering significantly faster stock turn. Last year also saw PowaKaddy launch the world’s first electric trolley with integrated GPS. The FW7s GPS model introduced GPS technology built in to a super-intelligent digital screen, delivering fast, accurate distances to the front, middle and back of the green at over 35,000 golf courses worldwide. This has proved so successful, that the company has now announced the launch of a Rental GPS trolley. www.powakaddy.com

Sad Days at North Weald

T

hese are the images of a golf course that’s been closed for just over a year. North Weald GC closed its doors for business for the last time on New Year’s Eve 2016 and has been closed ever since. Contrary to what people believe it didn’t go bankrupt which many Essex Golf Clubs run the risk of each winter, instead the owners were keen to gain planning permission for a new development called North Weald Park. This is a proposal for 750 dwellings along with provision for retail, restaurants, a medical centre, a primary school and a sports hub. The scheme has been in public consultation for a number of months, with no decision on the plan imminent. The course closure has caused a problem for the golf range business that is still in operation on the site. PGA Professional Paul Sullivan had worked at the range since 2010, he subsequently leased the golf range in August 2016. The course closing a mere 5 months later has had a big impact on revenue, with the dynamic of the site changing and far less golfers passing the door.

Paul says “our owners were kind enough to give me a reduction for the lease payments which has helped, however our biggest problem is that local people think that because the course has closed that we are no longer trading. The amount of times we’ve had to correct people and let them know we are still here.”

Paul is an Essex County Coach for the boys Under 16 squad also an Under 12 regional coach for the West Essex Region. He also leads the County Boys under 16 winter coaching programme. Both the Under 12’s and the winter sessions are based at North Weald Golf Range, which goes to show just how good the facilities are. Paul has PGA Professional’s Sam Willis and Bradley Preston working with him at the golf range. Throughout the week they run a whole host of group lessons including Ladies, Junior’s, Senior’s and adult groups too. “We’ve got great facilities here, 22 bays with 6 x 4 mirrors and extra fluorescent lighting in every bay. We have a floodlit short game area with a chipping green, a putting green and a practice bunker too”. Lessons are available 7 days a week. Contact Paul Sullivan on 07768 698699, Sam Willis on 07429 023323 and Bradley Preston on 07974 362292 Alternatively email us at info@northwealdgolfrange.co.uk North Weald Golf Range is open from 9am9pm Monday-Friday. At weekends from 8am7pm from March-November and 8am-5pm from December-February. - 60 -

Essex Golfer is a very good way to reach out to your target audience. We have been delighted with the service and coverage eceived over the past 4 years.

BASI LDON GOLF COU RSE

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER
