ho would have thought that earlier in the year we would be needing some rain on the courses!
I must say thought having played 7 different courses in Essex over the last 6 weeks they are all in excellent condition. Great credit to all the green staff involved. Well this month sees what most of us consider the major golf event of the calendar year. n Clubs from Callaway, Cobra, Cleveland, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, Srixon and Wilson can be compared to find the most suitable ones for you.
n Whether your looking for more length, greater accuracy, higher launch, shaft suitability for your swing or filling those missing wedge gaps, Skytrak and the team at Nevada Bobs Colchester can help. n All the information is projected on a 42 inch TV screen so you can see exactly what is happening in real time and 3D! n Suitable for Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges (right and left handed).

LEVERMORE LANDS LONDON OPEN THRILLER ason Levermore showed his customary icecool temperament to win the London Open J in a play-off at West Essex. The Little Channels Golf Centre professional looked to have the tournament at his mercy within regulation play, needing to two-putt from only six feet on the 18th green. But his first downhill effort rolled around three feet beyond the cup and he missed the return. That meant Levermore finished his two rounds at three-under-par alongside Glen Portelli (Old Fold Manor) and extra time was required to split the pair. At the first additional hole Portelli produced a wonderful up-and-down from dense rough to save par. The two men then birdied the next. But Levermore parred the third play-off hole which Portelli could only bogey after missing the green left with his approach. It gave the Essex PGA ace a ninth Order of Merit victory – but first since 2012 – and meant it was a case of all’s well that ends well after that dramatic three-putt at the end of his second round. Levermore, 38, reflected: “It was one of them. I dribbled the first putt three foot past and lipped out coming back.
“But I don’t really get too excited, to be honest. Obviously I didn’t enjoy three-putting it but it wasn’t going to ruin my day, put it that way. “I’ve not won a great deal lately, so if someone had said to me at the start of the day that I’d finish second I’d have been happy with that. “Going in to the play-offs there was not much to lose and I played the three holes nicely. “It’s great to win. I hit 15 greens on the first day and 15, maybe 16 greens the second day, so I’ve just been very steady. I made only two bogies over the two days.” By contrast Portelli’s tournament was more of a rollercoaster ride. He made 11 birdies and an eagle but also carded 10 bogies. Three of those came in the closing seven holes to see him drop back from six-under-par after he’d made a blistering start to his second round. Portelli said: “I should have seen it through. But it could have been worse. I could’ve not even been in the play-offs. “But definitely, next time, I want to try and finish a bit stronger.” Two former European Tour winners Simon Khan and Ray Russell (Centurion Club) shared fourth along with first round leader Aaron Cox (Elsenham Golf & Leisure). -8-

ORSETT GOLFERS RECEIVE LIFESAVING AWARDS wo Orsett golfers have received Royal Humane Society Certificates for saving the T life of a golfer who collapsed on the golf course following a severe heart attack. Richard Parker, Ron Davy and Steve Terry, all Thurrock residents and Orsett members had just tee’d off for their early morning round at Orsett Golf Club and were halfway down the first hole when Steve collapsed. At first, Richard and Ron thought he had just tripped over but when he didn’t get up they realised something was wrong. Steve had had a heart attack and had stopped breathing and was turning blue. Richard and Ron ran to help and between them administered mouth to mouth resuscitation and CPR chest compressions. The golfers following were sent to summon an ambulance which arrived after about 10 minutes. For the whole time, Richard and Ron kept Steve going until he could receive paramedic treatment. Steve later underwent open heart surgery to replace a defective heart valve. Thanks to Richard and Ron, he has since made a full recovery and is back walking the fairways trying to improve his golfing handicap and forever grateful that he chose that day to play
with Richard and Ron! Richard and Ron have now been awarded the Royal Humane Society Resuscitation Certificate for the humanity, promptitude, and skill shown in restoring a man to life. At a small ceremony, Orsett Golf Club Captain Kevin Lyons, can be seen (above) proudly presenting the certificates to Richard and Ron, copies of which will hang in the clubhouse as a constant reminder to members of exactly what to do in the event of such an emergency.

WEST ESSEX APPOINT THE YOUNGEST SECRETARY IN THE UK t just 23 James Levick has been appointed as Secretary of the West Essex Golf Club in A Chingford, London E4. He is by far the youngest Secretary the 118 year old club has had and it is believed that he is the youngest in the UK. A four handicap golfer James’ early ambition was to be a pro, but that was not to be so he left his native Cornwall at the age of 18 and joined the Pro shop at West Essex. “We could see from his experience in the shop that James is a driven and self-motivated individual. His customer service and engagement with members and guests is fantastic,” said Chris Baron the Head Pro at the West. At 20 to learn about the ‘other sides of golf ’ he moved to the Club office as assistant to the Secretary. His skills in sales and social media helped drive memberships up by 104 in his first year. Additionally, working with the team of pros James set up an outreach programme to local fetes and schools promoting the Club’s activities and the pro shop offerings. Working with Chris and his team, James has planned and organised the London Open Order of Merit tournament at the West Essex Course for the past three years including finding the sponsors needed to make this the highest prize money tournament in the Easter Region of the PGA. As a result it attracts European tour players such as Oli Fisher, Simon Khan, Raymond Russell, Robbie Coles and Mark Davis.
Needing to see the world he took a sabbatical down under last winter where he worked for Golf Australia adding a wealth of international knowledge to his UK experience. James said his immediate focus will be to continue driving membership sales and overseeing all golf activities in the Club as well as working with the GM and the Council on the development of a new academy course and what is scheduled to be the best practice area in the south of England. “We are lucky to have him on board. He is far beyond his years, his vision within the industry is incredible and his drive to take West Essex to the top of the tree is his sole focus,” said Dennis Swain the 48 year old Chairman of West Essex.

Marstons East Anglian Open at Bentley. Pestell, 39, fired rounds of 70 and 69 to clinch a two-shot win from former Walker Cup player Luke Goddard (Hendon). The PGA in Essex star’s victory charge on the second day was helped by a chip-in birdie from the back of the ninth green. He also made back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 with the latter seeing him hole out from 30 foot. With the pressure on deep into the tournament Pestell showed his mettle with a pair of longdistance two-putts for par at 16 and 17. He could even allow himself the luxury of a rare bogey at the last before signing for a five-under-par total for his two days’ work. It was Pestell’s second Order of Merit win but his first since triumphing at East Herts back in 2010. Pestell said: “This one is probably overdue! “I’ve been there and thereabouts quite a few times in the last few years, knocking on the door. Like at West Essex (the London Open) last week. “I hit the ball better there than I did here and just putted horrifically. So I knew something good was coming because I was hitting it so well. “The second round here my ball-striking wasn’t so good but
the putter paid for itself. I had some good putts out there “I was pretty calm all day. I wasn’t really flustered and just kept smiling when I didn’t hit it as I wanted to. “It’s really good to win again – almost a relief in a way.” Runner-up Goddard again played fine golf, suggesting a first Order of Merit win may not be too far away. The first-year trainee followed up a seventhplace finish in the London Open at West Essex by shooting rounds of 71 and 70 to go even closer at Bentley. Goddard, 30, said: “I’m pleased with the way I played. I just should have holed a few more putts really. “I’ve been playing the EuroPro Tour for the last couple of years but I’m just going to play in the East region this year. “My aim is definitely to win at least one Order of Merit event and secure a top-three finish.” London Open hero Jason Levermore (Little Channels Golf Centre) is the early frontrunner in the Marston Order of Merit race. He tied for third at Bentley, finishing two-under alongside Rob Coles (Maylands Golf & Country Club) and Phil Abbott (Whipsnade Park). The next Order of Merit tournament takes place at Ingrebourne Valley on August 7.

GET T HE SET UP RIG HT 2 1 TO PIT CH THE BA LL ne of the most important things when we pitch the ball is to be able to effectively use O 3 the bounce on the sole of the club. To be able to achieve this easily is to make sure we set the shaft and ball position correctly in the address position. The shaft should be vertical and the ball positon forward. Picture 1 shows the sole of the club if the shaft is vertical, you can see clearly that the lowest point is the centre of the sole. Picture 2 shows the sole if the shaft is leaning forward, you can see the leading edge now is the closest to the ground. This will give you the opportunity to dig the leading edge into the turf and a fat shot will result. Picture 3 and ideal set up with the club shaft vertical and the ball position forward, now the club will be able to slide under the ball with a large margin for error. Picture 4 DANGER ball back and shaft leaning forward. NO margin for error. Have fun

ROYAL DAY AT EPPING
RH Queen Elizabeth II took time out on her birthday (Saturday 9th June) to help H mens captain Matt Cawley draw the raffle and present the prizes at Epping Golf Club Captains’ day. Tracy Pedro Ladies Captain was strangely absent at the time. Her Majesty was accompanied by three rather listless corgis who dragged behind on a single lead. She was cheered by a patriotic gathering dressed in red white and blue. The day was accompanied by the clubs friendly and noisy new mascot “Papua” a Guinea Fowl who
has recently taken up golf in preference to some neighbours chicken run! The captain’s compass was won by Steve Rowe with 39 points off 7 handicap. The captains day prize was taken by Sam Nicholls (pictured below with dad Peter) with an amazing 45 points (thanks to CONGU!) who also won the Gardner family Trophy. Gill Sautter and Karen Rowe shared ladies first prize with 38 points and Eddie Quinn Smith was top junior with 37 points. Several hundred pounds was raised for Epping Charity “Dream Factory” that makes dreams come true for severely ill children.

JUNIOR PARENT SUMMER SPECIAL AT THREE RIVERS arah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional held a special event for the young juniors and their S family members at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club where she is Head Teaching Professional. This was the first time the players had ventured to the course which was held over 4 shortened holes to accommodate age related distance. There was an hour of group coaching prior the course competition which the parents joined in with too. Sarah has vast experience of coaching juniors both as a 1-2-1 basis and within a group environment, the County Academy Programme ignited her interest which progressed to her Golfing Girls Junior group sessions, the first of it’s kind in Essex. She has hosted and delivered sessions as the County Coach for the Girls Development Squad, however the important starting point is at Grass Roots and club level which Sarah has is growing. Sarah instigated the Junior Jubilees group which is held on a 4 week blocks each Saturday
between 1pm-3pm which are pre- bookable to avoid disappointment. Sarah utilises her knowledge to cover a variety of areas within a safe and structured session. “My aim is to develop our young players to ensure their playing experience of the game is introduced early on within their interest of playing golf. There are many more opportunities but as a Coach it is important to make all sessions and activities productive and enjoyable. The National “push” on introducing new players to the game is at it’s highest and with Major Events round the corner and improved weather, what better time than now” The feedback from the parents and juniors was fantastic with one youngster apparently would not stop talking about the day on the way home. This was obvious by the way the juniors headed straight to the putting green after the few holes, the only lure to the patio was the prize giving! This event has been active for 5 years now and will enable the family to become involved together with hopefully the Mum’s joining in too. Sarah is one of two TPI Junior Certified Coaches in Essex and holds the elite status of a Fellowship which currently makes up just 3% of the PGA Membership within the UK. I am passionate about all sectors of the game but nothing beats the smiling faces of our juniors after the session. Thanks to the structure with sections from tee to green, golfers can find the information they need in an instant. A quick fix guide for eliminating mistakes makes the practical ring-bound water-repellent booklet the ideal accompaniment on the course.
The tips are based on many years of competition experience by leading golf professionals. We’d be willing to bet that “Golf Trouble Shots and Quick Fix Guide” will help you save a number of strokes on your next round.

THE HEADWAY OPEN RAISES £2,486 n May 18th I organised my Golf day (now called The Headway Open) at Frinton Golf O Club. There were 130 golfers (26 Teams of 5) playing a format called Texas Scramble. I’m very pleased to say we raised £2486.12 on the day through donations for drinks and nibbles at the Zulu Hut (half way hut) kindly donated by Andy Hockey at ATS Construction, as well as sausage rolls and fruit donated by Wayne Ross at Ross & Wheatley.
I also completed a “Charity Drive In” where people that played in The Headway Open had to guess how far I could hit the ball with a driver,
bearing in mind my handicap before the brain op was down to 6 and it would be now 60 if that was allowed! As the event was successful, I plan on holding it again next year. My thanks go to the Frinton Golf Club and all the helpers on the day, especially Andy Hockey, Si O’Brien, Peter Taggart, my very special parents, Leah Rockell, all the golfers and the hole sponsors. As a bit about me, on the 11th February 2015, I had a VP Shunt fitted to help the fluid drain from my Brain as a Tumour (medulloblastoma) was blocking the fourth ventricle. The Tumour was successfully removed on the 12th of March 2015. Thirty sessions of Radiotherapy was to follow. The Brain Tumour and the Radiotherapy has left me with a Nystagmus (wobbly eye and double vision) in my left eye, poor fatigue, poor balance and co-ordination, poor sleep, memory loss and slow processing. Despite this, I am still determined to keep busy and continue to do things like this to raise money for Headway Essex who have supported me and my family. I am also happy to say I can still have fun, drink beer and enjoy a good meal! - 26 -

KEEP THE WEIGHT FORWARD FOR CHIPPING n the last months article we discussed the concepts of low point and making the chipping Istroke like a throwing motion. I hope these have made sense and now we have those concepts we want to apply a couple of key ideas. The first one is to keep 60% of your weight on the front foot when you chip. What will happen if your weight moves backwards, as is very common, is the low point happens before the ball causing bad contact. Try this yourself by experimenting with your weight staying forward versus being backwards and notice where your low point is.You should notice the low point being in front of the ball with the weight forward.
ON COURSE GOLF CONSULTATION Is your golf on the course different to the driving range? If you would like to improve your game on the course, I am offering a 4 hole or 9 hole on the course session to a make a real difference to your scores. We can see what is happening where it counts and make a plan to improve your game. Cost is ÂŁ40 for a 4 hole session and ÂŁ55 for a 9 hole session. Please get in contact with Matt on 07808 003 619 to book your consultation... Matt is based at South Essex Golf Centre in Brentwood.
TRY THIS EXERCISE: n Put a golf ball under your trail foot - If you put a golf ball under your left heel (for right handers) you will get a real sense of your weight staying more on your front foot. You want to start with 60% of you weight on your front foot, keep it there in the backswing and then move through the shot which we will cover next time. In chipping, as in many things, going backwards is never a good thing. - 28 -

PUTTING WHAT GREAT PUTTERS DO A
ll Great Putters Master the 4 skills below which creates their style!
1. Stand so they can start the ball on intended line. 2. Consistent Contact (Their stroke delivers Impact deviations of approximately 0.3 of a degree):- These areas are numbered as they are for a reason and will be covered in any good Putting Lesson or Fitting if they’re not leave! 3. Pace:- From the perspective of the pace that allows you to hole the most putts the ideal pace would be 2 revolutions of the ball past 27cm (10.6 inches) (see below) anything more than 4 revolutions 53cm (21inches)
reduces chances dramatically. You will probably now start to notice how the best putters on Tour putt at this pace. 4. Visualise line: - the best putters see the ball going in and this Ian Poulter clip says it all, nearly! His approach verses scientific theory (line too thin for IP) www.skysports.com/golf/news/245 12/11317039/watch-ian-poulterdemonstrates-his-putting-on-thezen-green “Leading putting coaches state really great putters have the ability to modify or compensate what they are doing within their stroke in order to produce the right outcome in the putter head. I can tell you as opposed to what some people think, “keep the hands out of the putting stroke;” every player we have measured has hand action during their stroke so It’s probably a good thing to have it in there” Dr. Rob Neal Leading Biomechanist and Technical Expert. Titleist Continues Golf ’s Longest Winning Streak at U.S. Open
itleist has extended its streak as the most trusted ball T at the U.S. Open in 2018, making it 70 years as the #1 ball at the toughest Major for the #1 ball in golf. To celebrate golf ’s longest winning streak, the brand is giving golfers the opportunity to purchase Special Play #70 Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls in Limited Edition U.S. Open packaging. More players seeking to etch their names into the record books have opted for the exceptional distance, control and consistency of the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x at Shinnecock Hills, extending the overwhelming preference of Titleist golf balls at Major Championships, dominance that started at the U.S. Open in 1949. Titleist has also been the #1 ball at The Open Championship since records began and reaffirmed its tremendous trust amongst the world’s best players at the 2018 Masters Tournament, where 54 members of the field of 87, including the eventual champion, elected to put a Titleist ball into play. This success is replicated week-in, week-out across all worldwide professional tours. Indeed, since the start of the 2017/18 season, Titleist has amassed 100* wins globally, more than six times the nearest competitor, while 13,075* players have chosen to tee up Pro V1 or Pro V1x. The latter figure is more than seven times that of the closest rival. Special Play #70 Pro V1 and Pro V1x in Limited Edition U.S. Open Packaging are now available from participating Titleist accounts across the UK and Ireland. consistent contact with the golf ball no matter where they find themselves – on or off the fairway. World renowned clubhead designer Tom Wishon said, “The new 318 Rail-Series Hybrid consists of a two-piece head made from investment cast stainless steel that features two ‘rails’ on the sole of the club. The dual rails design allows the club to slide through grass to assist the golfer in making good contact with the ball even in the longer grass often found on the edges of the fairway and in the rough.” Weight has been moved towards the rear of the club where it combines with the weight of the rails to produce a club head with a low centre of gravity. This combined with higher than average loft gets the ball airborne soon after contact with a trajectory that allows the ball to land softly. The face of the club has undergone a custom heat treatment that enables the 431-stainless steel face to be made thinner, encouraging the golfer to achieve good distance and control from any lie. Tom Wishon added, “Clubfitters should note that a maximum of 18g of extra weight can be added to the club head by means of twin weight bores in the sole and hosel. This means the clubfitter can prescribe a wide range of shaft weight and club length options to suit any golfer whilst maintaining a suitable swingweight or MOI.” As with all Wishon head designs, the new 318RS Hybrid has a bendable hosel for adjusting lie and face angle, making this a very versatile club head. The Wishon 318 Rail-Series Hybrids are available in 3 lofts – #3 (22°), #4 (25°), #5 (28°) – and right hand only from UK component distributors Diamond Golf. REDUCE THOSE 3I PUTTS
Sarah coaches at both Three Rivers Golf & Country Club & Stockbrook Manor Golf Club.
spend a large percentage of my coaching time assisting gofers with all areas of their short game in particular putting. One area which can be problematic are those awkward lag putts from 20-40 ft and further. I explain to my clients the “actual” percentages of putts holed from these distances and probabilities of both two and three putting which certainly comes as a surprise. This new information provides a high degree of confidence. I would like to provide you with a thought and action which I am sure will assist with your distance control and help with the “feel” element of this length putt. Instead of trying to maintain a very “stiff ” wristed motion for longer putts a method employed by many golfers. This particular action helps for the shorter length range putts but provides little feel for the longer range lag putt. Let’s learn to release the putter head slightly so it swings towards the ball using a slight flexion of the right wrist through impact. For a right handed golfer using the reverse overlap hold I like to produce a little angle in the
right wrist at address. If the wrist is arched this is harder to achieve. This angle produced at address and during the backswing allows for the feeling of unhinging or flattening the right wrist through impact. This helps to create extra distance whilst maintaining a degree of feel rather than a complete rocking shoulder movement. IS KOEPKA READY FOR CARNASTIE! rooks Koepka won the US Open at Shinnecock Hills NY. It was a tournament B full of great golf, huge controversy, complete meltdowns, and everything in between! While many of the best golfers on the planet were moaning about ‘unplayable’ conditions, a multi Major winner, yes ... Lefty Phil Mickleson, losing the plot on the13th green, it's actually no surprise that someone like Brooks won; he is super calm. Having watched Brooks cut his teeth on the European Tour it was easy to see his control and calmness on the golf course was in abundance.
Essex’s Robert Coles at The BMW PGA at Wentworth.
As in a previous article in The Essex Golfer The Mind Zone discussed repeat winners. It's uncanny how often a player wins the same event twice. Actually, uncanny is not the word, 'belief' is the word, it's a Mindset! You only have to look at Tiger winning the The Arnold Palmer Invitational an incredible 8 times in 13 years, or the Bridgestone Invitational 8 times in 14 years. Steve Stricker won The John Deere Classic three years on the bounce and as hard as the US Open (and indeed ANY tournament to win) is, to defend your title is an outstanding achievement. It’s interesting to note Bubba Watson won the Traveller’s Tournament for the third time recently, despite England’s Paul Casey starting the final round with a 4 shot lead. That’s true belief from a master of visualisation! Having won the US Open at Erin Hills 2017, Brooks was able to draw on his past experiences to see him over the line at Shinnecock. It's in these moments that your routines and processes look after you. If you don't have any, develop them with us at The Mind Zone. Brooks clearly showed 'patience' in winning his second Major. This is something that will be required for this seasons third major, The Open at Carnoustie. CONCENTRATION It is said, The Players Championship at Sawgrass is not won until the famous 'island green' 17th hole has been navigated in the 71st hole of the tournament. Well...you haven't won The Open at Carnoustie until you've played the 72nd! History suggests this and of course, confirms it also! Padraig Harrington finding the water but still winning in 2008, and the infamous Jean Van De Velde in 1999! (Google it). One thing is for sure, The Open will be brilliant, it always is. The winner will require great golf, luck, a consistency of routine, processes and a trust of mindset. The Open ... The BEST tournament in the world! Enjoy it! Get your game in shape with us at The Mind Zone and look out for Mind Zone Masterclasses coming up this autumn. www.themind-zone.com - 37 -

GOLFust to ask you all a question. Who has got frustrated on a golf course or in practice? I am J very convinced that a huge majority will say yes
and yes I have got frustrated for sure. However, what if we started to look at Golf from a different angle. The great Bobby Jones said this comment - “Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots - but you have to play the ball where it lies.” Why is it when we get a good break, we forget far quicker than when we get a bad break. This is why I asked this question. Golf - A matter of life or death? Well, when things go well for us we are happy, but when they go badly wrong we think everything is against us and your world has ended. If we looked at Golf and asked what does it mean. Well to me definitely life and certainly not death and hopefully helped by the following; G - Great Joy O - Open Minded L - Like or Love F - Fun
A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH? This is life and I hope that we can all look at Golf this way. We should change our attitude to help us, especially if you get angry or very frustrated. That doesn’t mean to say you shouldn’t care if it all goes wrong, but be aware of why we are playing this great game. As a Mind Factor Coach, the way you get people to play the game better, is to put structures in place and to always look at Golf from an open mind. The great Jack Nicklaus in a documentary about his 1975 Masters victory said this, I was having FUN. He didn’t know he was going to win as Johnny Miller and Tom Weiskopf were in contention with him, but in the heat of battle, he was enjoying himself. I really hope this article helps anyone who reads it and if you need any help, please feel free to contact me. Happy golfing,
SENIORS AT PLAYGOLF laygolf Colchester Seniors entertained Stock Brook P Manor in the third round of The John Day Trophy in the County Knock-out Competition, winning 6 games to 3 to progress to the fourth round. In another home match Playgolf Seniors had the pleasure of playing the Senior team from The Notleys in their annual friendly. Playgolf were early leaders and never relented to run out winners by 18 holes using the Hambro formula. - 38 -
THE STARS OF COLNE VALLEY aul Neale and Verity Rosewarne were the stars of Colne Valley Golf Club Captain’s Day as P 64 members competed in glorious sunshine for the men’s and ladies’ sections Captain's Cup. Club vice-captain Neale took the men's silverware with an excellent 39 points, despite his round beginning with a double bogey seven on the first. But this turned out to be the only one for his round. He made net pars for the next seven holes and a par on the ninth saw him grab his first threepointer of the day and an opening 18 points from the front nine. He started steady on the back nine, but five pars on the bounce from 14 pushed his back nine tally to 21 points. Current club champion Paul Davies claimed the runner-up spot two points adrift of the leader on 37. He started from the tenth and a steady 18 points for his first nine included a great birdie on the par-three 13th with the hole playing in excess of 200 yards. His second nine started off with a bang - a four-point haul from an eagle on the first. He grabbed his second birdie of the day on the ninth. Daniel Starr was third with 36 points. His round included six pars. The ladies Captain’s Cup was won by Verity Rosewarne who went out in 24 points for the front nine including pars on both the third and ninth. She managed 13 points for the inward nine including two three-pointers on 13th and 17th. Lyn White claimed the runners-up spot two points adrift on 35 and on countback from Lesley Knight. White’s round included an excellent 22 points on the back nine, amassed thanks to pars on 11

and 17, both yielding four points. Knight enjoyed a solid round with 17 points from the front nine and 18 from the inward holes. Nearest the pins were claimed by Lynn Anderson (third and 17th), Paul Neale (8th), Paul Davies (13th), Tom Murton and Penny Lang (7th in two). Club captain Andy Wilkinson and ladies captain Jan Eves thanked Tom Smith and his team for a course set up in splendid condition.

ver 80 ladies took part in the Society of Essex Lady Captains Meeting to celebrate O the Lady President’s 80th birthday at Forrester Park Golf Club in mid June. A shot gun start saw everyone on the course by 10.30, in drawn teams of 4 with 3 scores to count. The day started a little chilly but the sun soon came out and by the end of the round the temperature had soared. More ladies arrived in the afternoon and Lady President, Jan Collier, treated everyone to refreshments at the halfway hut. All the ladies enjoyed a delicious meal in the evening. No birthday would be complete without a birthday cake, and Jan was delighted with the golf themed 80 cake made by Paula Higgins. Jan announced that she would be standing down as President next year and that she had asked Dot Greaves (Forrester Park) to take over the reigns. All the team prizes were fiercely contested with all but one decided on count back: The top three teams all had 113 points: 3rd Lynda Dunbar (The Essex), Dot Greaves (Forrester Park), Lesley Aylmer (The Warren) & Lesley Sherer (Benton Hall). 2nd Glynis Oake (Orsett), Jan Nicholson (Benton Hall),Val Cummins (Forrester Park) & Joan Howroyd (Belfairs). Winners Hazel Argent (Thornton Park),
Carol Bell (Benton Hall), Angela Heyday (The Warren) & Betty Cox (Stoke by Nayland). The Lady President provided special prizes for Nearest the Line on 3 holes, won by Betty Cox (Stoke by Nayland), Jenny Luke (Mardyke Valley) & Ann Hemmings (Stoke by Nayland). Jan was presented with a birthday gift of a designer handbag and card signed by numerous members of the Society. Grateful thanks to Forrester Park Golf Club for hosting the special birthday event and to the present and many past Lady Captains of Forrester Park who helped Jan to celebrate her 80th birthday in style! A truly memorable day and all the positive feed back on the day and after the event was much appreciated.

ALL ABOUT GRIPS...
SOME BAD NEWS hey don’t last forever, in fact they don’t last that long at all. Of course this depends on T how much golf you play, if you play 2 or 3 times per week you will get about a year maximum before the performance drops quite dramatically. Once a week and you are looking at around 18 months. Without doubt the price of grips has increased over the last five or six years but grips are an incredibly important of the club. Ultimately it’s the bit we hang onto when we swing so that is obviously the part of the club that we feel the most. Worn grips demand an increased grip pressure to hold onto them which in turn is detrimental to your golf swing. Pressure in the hands and forearms reduce the natural movement of the club head through the ball. A little bit like tyres on your car, the more you drive the quicker you wear them out, grips form the only communication between you and the club, so it makes sense to have grips you can hold onto. I had a chap once who told me he was actually quite disappointed with his Callaway irons he bought about 15 years ago as he thought the grips would last longer. In truth you are looking at around 40 - 50 rounds of golf before the performance drops, less if you take practice into account. When choosing a grip don’t think the more expensive it is the longer it will last, this is not the case. Often colour can add cost to a grip without really bringing any performance benefit, it just looks nice! You also have different types of grip, rubber, cord, hybrid grip...the list goes on but again it’s an individual choice. Only thing I would maybe mention is if you have soft hands and like to practice I would go for a softer grip...a hard grip may make your hands sore. Also, fast swingers should not play soft grips, they can move around a lot in their hands and actually make the ball
deviate offline quite a bit on off centre strikes. Grip size is also an important consideration. For me measuring hand size is OK but I prefer to see how the hands look on the club...tension is key here, you want a grip size that reduces tension at address as much as possible. An example of this would be that if a golfer ‘measured’ for a standard size grip but a slightly larger grip helped reduce tension in the hands the bigger grip would make more sense to me. I would also suggest keeping the same type and size of grips on all of your clubs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with maybe having a different grip on your woods or wedges but for most the same works well. Also, there is nothing wrong with changing just the worn grips in the set, I’m sure for most the 7 iron gets more of a hammering than the 4 iron so no need to change them all every time, just the ones you use most. In a nutshell grips are an important but often overlooked aspect of a club. A fresh set of grips makes your clubs feel new again and although you may not instantly go out and shoot the lights out you know that you are giving yourself the best chance for a good score, at least from a grip perspective.

EXCITING DAY AT STOKE-BY-NAYLAND n Saturday the 9th of June, Stoke-byNayland Golf Club held their annual O charity day event to support the captains charity. This year the captain, Alan line, is supporting the Wooden Spoon, a rugby focussed charity to help transform the lives of disabled and disadvantaged children across the country. The stableford team event was for 2 scores to count on the first 6

holes, 3 scores to count on the middle 6 holes and all scores to count on the last 6 holes. In first place with 126 points was a team consisting of next year’s men’s captain, John Sandford, Keith
Hodgson, Ian Smith and Ian Collett. They beat the second place team on countback as they also had 126 points. This team was Guy Holland, Richard Middleton, Dan Martin & Nigel Howgego. It was an especially tight as the 3rd place team had only 1 point less on 125. During the round on the Gainsborough course, each team had the chance to pit their skills against Simon Dainty, one of the teaching pros at the club, on the 3rd par 3 to be inside his shot to win a prize. On the 18th par 3 a small floating green was set in the lake, 48 yards from the tee, for players to test their pitching skills into the hole. This was achieved by Chris “Stan” Guy early on it the day and no one else. On the putting green a long uphill putt was the challenge set and met by Paul Hever & Glenn Jackson. To cap it all, one of the ladies, Barbara jones, won the nearest the pin on the par 3 7th with a hole in one. Barbara jones hole in one.

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
W
hat a fantastic League phase of the Jubilee Cup 2018 that was! We now have our sixteen finalists, taken from the first and second teams of each League, who go through to the knock out phase and initially the “Round of 16”. I am expecting Essex Golfer out that first week in July, so you will have to keep a close eye on our website in the first two weeks of July to see progress in this phase – Round of 16 to be played by 15th July, so full update online I would expect by 18th July to determine our quarter finalists. Key site to look at therefore is our Road to the Final at www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/qsf_sheet_2018.html And as of the end of the League phase, this confirms the sixteen finalists and their Home/Away draw as below. Well done to these sixteen teams, however I 2018 JUBILEE CUP would first like to also say a MASSIVE thank you to WINNER all clubs who entered in 2018. The comments coming through on scorecards to the Committee have been second to none, and I myself have had the pleasure in playing in four matches with some wonderful players, and being made to feel very welcome when Away (and hopefully vice versa for our opponents). Jubilee Cup Some stats for you up to the Group stages – we Round of 16 confirmed have in 2018, had a total number of players participating this season so far of 1040. There are a total number of 3543 individual players who have participated in the past decade (since 2008), which is up over 500 from last year. In other words about half of all players who participated has not played in the Jubilee Cup before, which is an amazing impact to our region I feel. Round of 16 to be played by 15th July 2018

These are truly inspiring figures for this competition, and make us on the Committee very proud to be supporting Essex Golfers! To those Essex teams who are not progressing – thank you to your Captains and organisers for all your efforts in organising matches, and thank you to the participants for their spirited play - please do pass on our methods of communication (see below), so they can continue to participate in this year’s comp: See us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thejubileecup/ Follow us on Twitter: @jubilee_cup Our website is: www.jubileecup.com I also hate to say this to you, but yes, the 2019 competition entry form is already on our website for your to download, print, fill out and send back to me with entry cheque! It is off the home page or download direct from www.jubileecup.com/entryform2019.pdf So how did we finish in the crucial Round 4 matches? See below for complete results. Some impressive results in the final stages by Forrester Park and last years’ competition winners Stoke by Nayland. I was also personally on hand to witness Garon Park’s review of other crucial results coming in that secured their progression to the
Round of 16 - it was crucial that West Essex contend with South Essex which they did 6 & 3. Rob Burdett’s Garon team, already on a high from defeating Notleys 5 pts to 4 pts, were cheering in the club house when they found out that the West Essex result would enable them to get through to the Round of 16 as League runner up! As well as top level results for clubs, the Jubilee Cup website holds the full details of all 4BBB and Singles games if you wish to delve down to individual levels – I believe this is a unique facility within Essex! Singles Order of Merit: www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/playsing.htm There are an impressive 7 players from the League that have won all four of their matches - however Notleys’ members have forbad me from mentioning the top spot, so please see the next six spaces.Very little in this, and the Round of Sixteen will see many of these clubs (and players??) continuing their bid to become OoM singles champion! The doubles/pairs OoM has seen some change also since Round Three, with Notleys players being indisposed to play in round 4 mainly. Plus even with the great results below, with five 4BBB players with full League points, and a further six players just half a point behind them, I would be expecting a large amount of change following the round of 16 completion - many of these players’ clubs will not proceed, and hence some players on even 3 wins have a chance to elevate in this OOM. A massive well done to those below however who have had excellent League player experiences! 4BBB Order of Merit: www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/playdoub.htm The doubles/pairs OoM has seen some change also since Round Three, with Notleys players being indisposed to play in round 4 mainly. WHAT IS YOUR Flexibility Score have been helping golfers since 2007. One of most important assessments i carry out is Ithethe “rocabado scale.” This 9 point test will test someones systemic flexibility, not just muscle testing, this scale tests YOUR flexibility from a deep level ... your natural flexibility throughout the body. Why is it so important? The score you get will determine how hard I can push you, how much you need to stretch ... or how little ... not everyone needs to spend hours stretching! Someone who is HYPER mobile (very flexible) is as vulnerable to injury as someone who is HYPO mobile (very tight). Below is a link to a website that can help you take the test; www. primalhealth.co/the-9-pointflexibility-test/ 0-2 - Stretching NEEDS to be a big part of your routine. Re golf ... stretching pre comp is vital! I also recommend my golfers with a 0-2 result to stretch very warm … with lots of clothes on or in a sauna. The muscles when warm are like playdoh and are much more pliable. 3-5 - Stretching and mobilisations are still essential but a lot less that 0-2 people. Strengthening and stabilisation is just as important. 6-9 - This is hypermobile and stretching should be taken very seriously. Strengthening and building muscle through functional exercise is vital. Creating stability around lax
?
joints is essential. However, stretching or mobilisation is still needed but in more specific areas. With all of my clients i use this, golfer or not. Its really important your coach knows your flexibility score. It determines the rate in which you progress, the amount you need to stretch, your warm up/cool down routine and much more. Any questions re the rocabado scale or your flexibility score please drop me an email.

Match Report
SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY & THE COLTS CHAMPIONSHIP Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Friday 25th May 2018 he Thorpe Hall Golf Course was in exceptional condition T and was a much talked about topic throughout the day, as players were impressed with the fast running greens, with the rough left relatively long to punish any wayward shot. The morning’s play was impressive with six of the field breaking par. Three players were tied on rounds of 69, -2. Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred), Joshua Cardy (The Warren) & Harry Robson (Orsett) all enjoyed a oneshot lead over lunch. The three players that had posted scores of 70, -1, were Estuary Trophy Winner Jay Beisser (Basildon), Keating Trophy Winner (Jordan Slater) & Luke King (Thorpe Hall), making a great start by shooting 6 under his handicap. The Colts Championship for Under 21’s is run in conjunction with The Sir Michael Bonallack and this year the halfway lead was held by two of the three on morning rounds of 69, Harry Robson and Jack Dyer. In the afternoon, Luke King struggled to match his morning form but still carded a respectable 78 for a 148 finish, well done Luke, great effort. Jay Beisser matched his morning round by managing another round of 70, -1, finishing on 140 (-2) for the championship. Joshua Cardy also had a 70, making a total of 139. Thanks to his 69 in the morning round the 3 under par total was sufficient to ensure 3rd place on his own. Jordan Slater only managed 1 birdie in the afternoon, however a pair of eagles on the back nine meant he finished on an improved round of 68 and lowest round of the day. I’m sure he will be disappointed with two blemishes on his card which meant he would miss out on the trophy this year but a valiant effort all the same. So, the stage was clear for Jack Dyer, recently returned from college in Florida, Jack managed a 68, 3 under par round to win the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy by one shot from Jordan Slater. Not only that, Jack also picked up the Colts Championship Trophy over his nearest competitor in the field Harry Robson on 144 (+2). In his winner’s speech Jack showed his maturity when referring to Will Turner, a keen junior golfer and former Cadet Captain at Thorpe Hall Golf Club who was also involved with the Junior county teams. Will was a great character who sadly died in a car - 49 -

accident in 2015. Jack made reference to ‘everyone being lucky to be there, playing golf, on such a lovely day, on such a lovely course, not everyone still has that privilege.’ He received a warm round of applause and afterwards after congratulating him on not only a fine day’s golf, but also a very fitting speech, he replied, ‘He has been on my mind all day, I had to say something’. Congratulations Jack on a fine performance in every way! Thank you to Thorpe Hall Golf Club, their staff and the members for giving up their course for the day, and for their impeccable hospitality. County Match
MIDDLESEX v ESSEX Northwood Golf Club – Sunday 27th May 2018 ust a week after the successful defence of the Eastern Counties Foursomes title at Skegness saw the first away match J of the league campaign for the Essex County side at Northwood Golf Club against Middlesex. With 3 changes to the team which defeated BB&O in the first League match, in came Jordan Slater, Brandon Meads and reigning Essex Amateur Champion Curtis Knipes. Quite a formidable side with a combined plus 12 handicap. Jordan and Michael Gilbert went out number one after their excellent performance last week with 3 other strong pairings following. However, the early stages were dominated by the home side on a tight, tricky but wonderfully prepared Northwood course. After 4 holes Middx were ahead in 3 of the matches with only Ricky Lee and Will Percival showing a narrow 1 hole advantage. The slow start by Essex was not to continue, as slowly Essex recovered in all but match 2 with Middx top pairing James Ellis and Tommy King inflicting a 4&3 defeat on Arron Edwards-Hill and Callum Pipe. The other 3 matches all went down to the final hole with Jordan & Michael and Ricky & Will getting points by the slenderest of margins. The final game ended in a deserved half with never more than one hole in it throughout. So, a very narrow 2 ½ to 1 ½ advantage to Essex at lunch which could quite easily have been the other way round. Jordan Slater led the side out for the afternoon singles and soon

showed he was the right choice at number 1. After 9 holes he was 4 up against Middlesex leadoff man Tommy King and quickly gained his point with 5 holes to spare. His foursomes partner Michael Gilbert quickly followed with our second point of the afternoon after a 6&4 win over James Ellis Games 2 and 3 demonstrated the home sides fighting spirit with wins over Brandon and Callum, however the last four matches all showed convincing wins for the Essex side. Singles won by 6 points to 2 and an overall victory by 8 ½ to 3 ½ . Our thanks to hosts Middlesex, also Northwood Golf club and its members for some excellent hospitality on an immaculately prepared course. Phil Hulse County Team Manager

T
he 2018 South East Junior Championship event was weather affected this year, with torrential rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon reducing the event to 18 holes from the planned 36-hole competition. The overall competition over a challenging Moor Park course also incorporates an under 16 category. Essex boys featured prominently in the results, with Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) taking 2nd place in the overall championship and Harry Moncur (Abridge) finishing 4th. In the under 16’s event, Rory Bennet (Hainault Forest) finished in a creditable joint 3rd place.

FALDO WEDGE Canons Brook Golf Club – Thursday 31st May 2018
anons Brook Golf Club hosted The Faldo Wedge this year with a maximum entry of 144 Juniors from all around the County. The weather forecast threatened storms so klaxons were at C the ready, however, the morning players set out on time on a very well presented course which proved to be a good test of golf for all players The Faldo Wedge consists of morning and afternoon start times. Teams consist of three juniors representing their Club, with all three scores to count from 18 holes of stableford format. The mornings play saw some great golf, with Chigwell Golf Club taking the lunch time lead with a team total of 109 points consisting of Harry Ioannou (38pts), Thomas Atkinson (37pts) & Maura Burns-Zaragoza (34pts). Next best were Playgolf Colchester & Bentley on 106 points and Langdon Hills a further point back on 105. The afternoon saw a continuation of good scoring, which meant it would be a long tense wait for Chigwell. The first tee time of the afternoon consisted of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club’s Sam Nixon (39pts), Harry English (39pts) & Max Toombs (33pts) who managed a leader board topping 111 points. This meant Chigwell slipped to second place but still with plenty of teams to come in. Thorpe Hall Golf Club’s A & B Teams were next in with their Team B managing to match the leading score of 111 points with a team of girls, Millie May-Penfold (41pts), Abbie Webb (40pts) & Emily Dixon (30pts) just losing out to Stoke by Nayland on Countback. However, Millie MayPenfold’s 41 points was enough to pip Ciara Rushmer (Langdon Hills) on countback for the best individual girl’s score. Congratulations to both girls on excellent performances, a well-deserved handicap reduction will be in store. The day, however, belonged to Thorpe Hall A, consisting - 52 -

of last years winners, Ali-Abbas Haji, Luke King & Max Webb. The team managed to achieve a four point victory with 115 points. The big score coming from Ali-Abbas with 46 points, which was best individual boys score on the day. Luke managed 35 points and Max followed it up with 34. Not only have Thorpe Hall successfully defended the title they won last year, but they did it with the same team. Congratulations to all three boys. Thorpe Hall will now be representing Essex in the National Junior Club Championship later in the year, we wish the team all the very best of luck for the event in August. Fortunately the day was not interrupted as we managed to avoid all the storms crossing the south east region from the near continent. Our thanks to all the Junior Organisers that do so much for junior golf in the county and to Canons Brook Golf Club for hosting the event and making everyone so welcome.

Match Report
ESSEX AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Upminster Golf Club – Sat/Sun 9th & 10th June 2018 his year the competition took place at Upminster Golf Club. The first day’s play brought some great golf as well as T fantastic weather. A strong field of 78 players with the highest handicapper in the field at just 4.5. Despite the weather and the strength of the field, the scores suggested the course was not playing as easy as first suspected. This was attributable to the speed of the greens, they were running smoothly at 11 on the stimp-meter. The strategically positioned pin locations made it essential to plan your approach shots, with the better scorers on the day leaving their ball on the low side of the hole. One player that didn’t appear to have any difficulty navigating his way round the course was defending champion Curtis Knipes (Abridge) who managed 7 birdies and just one dropped shot for a new amateur course record of 63. Curtis, who missed a few other birdie opportunities on his way to completing his opening round finished 4 shots clear of the Curtis Knipes field, with Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) who managed a Abridge very good 2 under par 67, and Callum Pipe (Braintree) & Joe Golf Club. Tatam (Brentwood) who both had one under par 68s leading the chasing pack. The players headed out for the afternoon rounds all competing to be placed in the top 42 by the end of the day to qualify for the final day on the Sunday. Curtis Knipes’ lead fell to a margin of just one shot after Harry Butler managed a 2 under par round of 67 whilst the best Curtis could manage was a 3 over par 72. Joe Tatam’s afternoon round of 71 saw him remain towards the top of the leaderboard, and Callum Pipe was tied in 3rd position with Jack Dyer on a total of 137, just two shots off the lead. The top 42 and ties qualified for the Sunday, but early morning phone calls informing the Essex Golf Union of injuries and withdrawals meant a few of the field were missing, including one of the leading contenders, Jack Dyer, who had been hit with a bout of food poisoning overnight. With the pin positions in slightly more accessible locations on the Sunday it was expected that it would be a low day for scoring. Only four of the field managed to 3rd place Arron Edwards-Hill, Winner Curtis Knipes break par in the morning, Ben Tobin and Harry Butler 2nd place. - 54 -

(Basildon) and Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford) with the low score of the day, a 4 under par 65, and two of the final group, 2nd place Harry Butler and leader Curtis Knipes. This meant that Curtis now held a 2-shot cushion going into the final round over Harry Butler, closely followed by Callum Pipe. The competition heated up as a number of players felt they could close in on Curtis in the afternoon. Arron Edwards-Hill being one of them, a round of 68, 1 under par saw Arron climb to tied 3rd by the end of the tournament. This tied with Callum Pipe who returned a 71, 2 over par, his Curtis Knipes being presented the Jubilee highest round of the competition. So, the stage was Trophy by Upminster GC Captain, Lee Shaw. set for the battle between Curtis and Harry as they approached the 72nd hole. The difference was still just two shots, Curtis on -5 and Harry on -3 for the Championship. Harry, in attempting to attack the pin bunkered his tee shot, so could only manage to bogey the par 3, leaving the stage for Curtis to make a regulation par to become Essex Champion golfer again. A large gallery had surrounded the 18th to watch Curtis hole the putt to successfully defend his title. After Curtis holed out there were some warm embraces between the three-ball of Callum, Harry and Curtis which showed the spirit in which the tournament was played. The applause continued as the trio walked from the 18th green to record their scores. Another solid performance over the weekend from Jordan Slater saw him record another top ten finish, which has propelled him up to the top of the 2018 Order of Merit standings as the players head for the 2018 Team next Order of Merit event, The Cliffords Curtis Knipes holds The Trophy, at Stock Brook Essex Amateur Trophy. Manor in July. Upminster Golf Club were excellent hosts of this year’s championship with fantastic food and impeccable greens, reports from the players suggested they were very impressed with the condition of the course and many said they were looking forward to returning in September to play in the Upminster Trophies. Our thanks go to Upminster Golf Club and their members, staff and volunteers that made the day such Curtis Knipes being presented the Essex a success. We also congratulate Curtis on a fantastic Amateur Championship Trophy by Lee Shaw, Upminster GC Captain. victory. - 55 -

VETERANS TROPHY Woolston Manor Golf Club – Tuesday 19th June 2018
T
he 2018 competition was hosted by Woolston Manor Golf Club. The weather was warm due to a humid climate with the occasional burst of bright sunshine. At times a cooling breeze was looking to play havoc on some exposed parts of the course which was in good condition with firm greens. A few late withdrawals reduced the field to 55 players teeing off in the competition.
Over 70’s Winner Martin Cooper accepts his prizes from Woolston Manor Captain Andrew HaywoodDunn and EGU President Elect, Brian Collins.
There are two trophies presented at this over 55’s event, the Veterans Trophy is for the overall winner, and the second piece of silverware is for the best score returned by a player who is over 70 years of age, the Over 70’s Salver. The scoring was tough due to the gusty winds and general conditions as the field played from the white tees which were said to make the course play its full length despite the hard ground conditions. 35 points returned by Alan Cable (Basildon) & Keith Avery (Three Rivers) led the way for a while until Graham Hammond (Basildon) carded a steady 36 points. Then Kevin Walker (Romford) returned with 37 points which stole the limelight for a short period until Ian Hall (Brentwood) managed to top the leader board with a great score of 38 points playing off of an 18 handicap. This was the best score on a day that saw the CSS rise to 74 from an SSS of 71, proving it was a tough day for scoring for the competitors. The Over 70’s Salver was won by a past winner of the Veterans Trophy, Martin Cooper (Chelmsford) with 29 points. Martin, having won the Veterans Trophy in 2008 was delighted to win the Over 70’s Salver ten years later in his year of Club Captaincy. Our thanks to Woolston Manor Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and well-prepared course, and to their Men’s Captain Andrew Haywood-Dunn, who presented all the prizes following the evening meal along with our President Elect, Brian Collins. - 58 -

With six players taking part Essex had two teams in the team event, eventually coming 2nd and 3rd, with 1st place going to host county BB&O. Congratulations to all the Essex players who were, as always, a credit to our County. Dave Edwards Colts Manager - 59 -
THE NOTLEYS CLOSES AN EXCELLENT YEAR
ecent weeks has seen Notleys Golf Club close off a brilliant year, and a great start to R another fantastic year as the friendly club with a great future! Firstly our postponed charity Fancy Dress golf match (after the March snows!) was a roaring success, with members taking to the course dressed as Super-heroes, Disco men, and also supporting our larger than life outgoing captain. Outgoing captain Dene “Beetlejuice” I’Anson, is seen here with his loyal Oompa Lumpas, and the knightly former captain Daz Liversidge – the Oompas left to right are Mark “Dave” Clements, Mark “Sofa” Fletcher, Graham “I hate golf ” Beale, Chris “CIO” Jordan, and Nigel “Hammered” Hollis. And finally, the Notleys GC members were very proud to welcome Charlotte from Little Havens Childrens Hospice which was Dene’s charity last year: www.havenshospices.org.uk/littlehavens-hospice Dene is seen on the right, with Charlotte from Little Havens, handing her a fantastic
contribution of over £3300 from the generous donations of members from his events during the year. Little Havens Children’s Hospice provides care for children who are life-limited, are life threatened or have palliative care needs. What this means is that the child has been diagnosed with a condition, meaning that their life may be shortened. Charlotte was very pleased and grateful, as these funds will go towards a fantastic cause from the continually generous members of Notleys Golf Club.

BASI LDON GOLF COU RSE
As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER
