Danny Harwood (Matt’s Coach) was there with Matt’s Dad, Martin Whitaker to do the introductions and keep score. Matt, 7 years of age, played the hole 18 times and scored an impressive 65 (+11). Matthew had a great 2017 season, winning several events including the Wee Wonders Final at St. Andrews. Matt made it into the top 50 around the world and number 1 in the UK and because of these great achievements, Matt has qualified for several events around Europe and Danny Harwood wanted to him to play in as many events as possible. It was a very successful day and they managed to raise a great sum of which will help Matt play in as many events possible. Matt thoroughly enjoyed himself and his family were amazed by the support the Nazeing Golf Club members gave him. -4-

MIRACLE AT THE 14TH HOLE A pair of golfing friends defied odds of 17 million to one when they both hit their first ever holes in one - with consecutive shots. Terry Huggins and John Hill were playing in a doubles tournament at the leafy Langdon Hills Golf Club in Essex when they made golfing history. Mr Huggins, 61, was the first to bag the ace, sinking a 165-yard shot across the lake using his six iron on the picturesque 14th hole. The pair were confident it was a great shot but could not be certain the ball had gone into the cup. Mr Hill, 57, then picked a seven wood and hit it across the water with the ball bouncing twice before disappearing on the par three hole. Although hopeful of good outcomes, they could not be sure of their incredible feat until they walked round to the flag. The friends were left jumping around 'like school children' when they reached the green and were told by the golfers playing ahead of them that both balls had indeed gone in. Their incredible feat is calculated to have been about 17 million to one, with high street bookmaker William Hill saying they would not

even be willing to take on the wager with such a large potential payout. ‘When we realised what we'd done we were hugging each other. ‘I was happy to get a hole in one but didn't realise the odds. It didn’t sink in until we got back to the clubhouse and people were telling us what an achievement it was. ‘It’s not something we’re likely to ever manage again so it was great to have shared it with a lifelong mate who I've known for over forty years.’

JUNIOR TRIAL SESSIONS AT RIVENHALL THE BENEFITS OF GOLF FOR CHILDREN owadays, our children are floating around in virtual bubbles, spending an increasing N amount of time either watching screens or typing on them. An article by the BBC reported that children spend an average of six or more hours glued to a screen every day. Parents are forever looking for ways to get their children to play outdoors rather than on the computer. Afterschool activities are a good solution, as finding a hobby brings more than just a bit of fun to our children’s lives. In fact, 80% of parents believe scheduling in sports or other activities are good for their children’s development. Having a hobby and a focus outside of education makes children happier and healthier, through benefits such as increased creativity and self-confidence. A sport many parents encourage their children into is golf. We enjoy it as adults, so why can’t they enjoy it with us? The team at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre in Witham know how important children’s development and wellbeing is to parents. They are currently offering affordable trial sessions in an attempt to get more kids onto the course. HEALTHY HABITS Firstly, there are the obvious benefits of encouraging children to be outdoors and take in fresh air. This can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s mental health by reducing stress and encouraging happiness. Golf is also extremely good for physical health as it is a sport after all. It is estimated that the average person burns around 1,442 calories on a round of golf through the miles of walking and carrying clubs. This type of sport is good for children who don’t particularly enjoy exercise, as it offers a less intense work out.
CORRECT ETIQUETTE Golf demands a certain type of etiquette. It is a community that instils fundamental lessons into children, such as how to communicate with others. The respectful nature of the sport shows children how to control their emotions as if the ball flies into a bunker or a vial putt is missed, the game can become quite frustrating. However, these emotions must be curbed in order to remain composed on the course. LIFE LONG LESSONS Golf instils vital life lessons and values. It makes children take responsibility for their actions and performance. Although it is a competitive sport, players will be competing with themselves to improve their own game. Therefore, not only does this teach them to set goals, but it also shows that their shortcomings or failures cannot be blamed on someone or something else. The independence of golf also teaches children about truthfulness, even if it’s just about how many shots they have taken on a hole. TIME TOGETHER Golf is a very inclusive sport that can be played by people of any age, gender or ability. People from all different walks of life from all over the world can come together on a golf course, which teaches children about diversity and opens their eyes to a broader view of the world. Due to the fact anyone can play, golf provides an opportunity for you to spend time with your children doing something productive that you can all enjoy and learn from. BOYCE HILL GOLF CLUB ... TRADITIONS AND CHARM IN ABUNDANCE WITH A MODERN FEEL s Boyce Hill approaches it’s centenary, it is clear to see how the Club can be considered A a progressive club, whilst still very much embracing the traditions of a true members club. Over the past 5 years, the club has taken the key steps to understanding the challenges of the golf industry today and has tackled them head on. It’s Ladies Academy system that provides new ladies to the game a route of progression that enables them to learn the fundamentals of the game with an end goal of joining the full Ladies section. The Club has seen a number of “graduates” develop through the system and join the Ladies section on a full time basis. Much can be said for the Junior Academy, run by PGA Teaching Professional Michael Goodwin, who has taken the gospel of golf out to the local community and has given free taster sessions to schools and offers free tasters for children aged between 6-13years at Boyce Hill. The Club must be commended for openly advertising that it is a family club, and in an age where family time is at a premium, welcomes and encourages families to the Club to spend time together. Last year saw the Club host a Family Open Day attracting in excess of 175 locals in an effort to provide some insight and exposure to what Club life and Golf is all about.
The Club has planned it’s next Family Open Day for Saturday August 11th, equipment is provided and a series of fun golfing related events will be available for people to just “Have a go”. Following a significant investment in a recent extension, the Club has modernised it’s clubhouse and has created a fantastic “viewing gallery” where you can sit and enjoy the Club’s fine fayre overlooking incredible views of the golf course and surrounding area including Thundersley Glen. Graham Burroughs, one of Golfs longest serving Club Professionals, has seen a number of changes over his 42 years service. He has developed a strong reputation and his Professional Shop is a golfer’s dream with the variety of stock he has to offer. Known as the “Longest shortest course”, the James Braid course is testament to a true test of golf that any member will tell you the handicap travels well. From the most loyal of members with 68 years loyalty to the Club, or to it’s newest member, whoever you bump into here will always be a warm smile and welcome to greet you. CLARK GRABS VICTORY len Clark was hot out of the traps to grab victory in Colchester Golf Club coveted G County Standard Silver. On a day when low handicappers came to the fore in the testing medal event – filling the top four places – Clark, playing off six, fired two birdies in the first three holes on his way to a sizzling nett 68. But it was a close run thing with Richard Withnall (3), Roger Wright (4) and Dan Nicholls (3) all hot on his heels, just one shot back after nett 69s. Clark showed his class from the off with birdies at the second and third. Bogeys at the sixth and six brought him back to level par gross for the front nine but things looked to be slipping away after a dropped shot at 11 and a double at 12. A fine, birdie three at the long 15th steadied things but he had to survive a late wobble, with dropped shots at both the last two holes, before victory was assured. All three players in second place had significant tales of “what if ” - having got themselves into great positions.

uring my residential golf tuition breaks at Penina in Portugal I spend a significant amount of time with my pupils on the putting green. We discuss technique, grips of varies types, reading greens and judging distance. But one of the most important things when trying to judge pace and distance it is your ability to transfer energy to the ball at impact consistently. This also goes for reading breaks, if the ball is leaving the putter at different speeds the ball will break different amounts for the same putt. Often this inconsistency is a product of re coiling the putter rather than completing the end of the swing and holding it there. Like many of my pupils in Portugal you may not even realise that it is happening. It might be
1
interesting to watch your playing partners and observe what happens to their putter after impact. Recoil is the sudden drag back of the putter during impact Picture 1 shows this. To stop it
3
happening try this simple drill with a couple of tee pegs set into the green a few inches in front of the ball Picture 2. Now hit some putts as I am doing but finishing the swing and holding it for 3 seconds over or against the two tee pegs. If you can master this simple skill you will start to consistently transfer energy and your ability to judge distance and read breaks will improve. If you would like to join me on one of my residential tuition breaks next spring just keep an eye on my golftravelservices.com web site for the dates.

STOKE TEAM REACH ENGLAND GOLF FINALS WEEK an Thompson, Del Pritchard, Bev Thompson Jo Little were entered to represent Stoke Ibyand Nayland Golf Club at the England Golf Team Championship Regional Qualifier at Mannings Heath Golf Club, West Sussex on Sunday 13th May 2018. The competition was open to teams of four, including at least one lady, and the format was best two stableford scores to count on each hole playing off 90% handicap. Mannings Heath proved to be a challenging course and after a nervy start, only scoring three points on the first hole, Team Stoke soon rallied to 42 points for the front nine. Some solid play from Ian and Jo saw them maintain their form on the back nine to achieve a total of 84 points and making them leaders in the clubhouse. Following the live leaderboard at home, Club President Lesley Garnett was nervously watching the remaining scores come in and although Team Stoke finished in third place to scores of 87 and 84 (on count back) this should be enough to see

Golfing Girl was simply a name but the conversion of ladies starting the sport through Sarah’s popular group lessons which she holds at her home club of Three Rivers is growing. “My aspiration is to provide the opportunity for ladies to try the game with my proven coaching record and Golfing Girl structure advancing to Jubilee Membership then advancing to the Kings Course. It is vital to allow new participants male or female the correct amount of time to progress to the next level, this is obviously different from player to player.” She has been asked to assist with the PGA National drive and has appeared in the PGA Profile Magazine, Sarah’s recent inclusion to the PGA East Regional Committee is something which she is excited to be involved in.
The National average is approximately two years from stating the game to membership, however this “membership”can take on a number of formats, so can be misleading if taken literally. “I hold numerous events all designed to make the new player feel at ease during their on-going journey which will include new found friends and fitness.” Continues Sarah. “Having just returned from a weekend away shows the popularity of Golfing Girl and the development of ladies golf. The most satisfying element about my role as a Coach are the text messages and the emails from my clients as after all golf is a recreational sport but we all want to improve whilst enjoying those precious hours on the course. If you would like to discuss about getting into the game or improving as a player please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do my best.” sarah@golfinggirl.co.uk, 07719 617349 or Twitter @GolfingGirlUk

Played on the Constable course the change to hot and still weather made for perfect golfing conditions. From the beginning it was SBN dominating and as the results came in the scores showed this. In the singles, all six players won their matches; Trevor Warren, Chris Williamson, Dean Brace, Neil Brooks, Michael Mclachlan and debutant Danny Goddard. This was followed in the three pairs matches with wins for Andrew Hately & Liam Worsdell, Paul Raison& Alan White and a draw in the final match for Nigel Howgego and Steve Evans. The final pair did well to half their match with a win on the 18th as they were 3 down at the turn. The fourth and final match of the group is away to Braintree where a win will take them through to the next stage.

CHIPPING AND AN UNDERARM THROW! months article we discussed the low point it relates to chipping. For the second Ipartnandlastofhow developing your chipping we will move onto the next key idea.. A concept I have found really useful is that the chipping motion is just an under arm toss of the ball. If you did just toss a ball I am sure you would be good at it and find it fairly simple. This is pretty much the same motion we are trying to make when making a chipping stroke. So if you just tossed a ball notice how you move through the throw? How to you move? Do you make a similar motion when chipping? TRY THIS EXERCISE: n Get some balls and throw them at a target Build some awareness of what you instinctively do and how that compares to how you chip the ball. If you notice the chipping swing is different it may be a reason why you struggle with this shot. The chipping stroke is essentially a toss of the ball and if you can do that you will chip well providing you make the same type of motion with the club. Try this and see what you find out. Next month we will start to apply the concepts of low point and a throwing motion. - 28 -

THE
DISAPPOINTING TRUTH
o, every year another driver comes out and every year we are promised a few extra yards. S If you are thinking to yourself it’s all I ever talk about I apologise but some things need to be said. So, the truth of the matter is that there is only so much a driver can do on it’s own - it’s actually the quality of fit that makes the difference. As you can see from the image the biggest increase in distance in the last 20 years comes from top professionals. But in the 13 - 20 handicap bracket, which is pretty much the
average golf club member, the average player has only gained a measly 10 yards in 20 years - half a yard per year. Even a category one player has only gained 12 yards, so for all the hype it’s a disappointing truth. Please don’t think this is a study that I conducted, it’s from an official R&A study into driving distance. Finally, as a point of interest, London double decker buses are around 12 yards long so it’s a good comparison - for many their distance increase is not as long as a London bus.

FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR BRAINTREE GOLF CLUB raintree Golf Club, one of the oldest in Essex, is investing for the future with the aim B of being able to offer its members and visitors golf all year round. The fruits of this investment have already been witnessed this season as greens and tees remained playable over winter when other courses closed. Established in 1891 the club moved to its present site in the quiet village of Stisted in 1972 opening as an 18 hole parkland course. The trees planted by its members have matured and they shape and define the course layout giving a natural and challenging defence to its 6,200 yards. So driving accuracy is key as the fairways snake between trees, bunkers and water hazards. Following a comprehensive course report by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) the club has embarked on a three year programme to improve the quality and resilience of fairways, tees and greens. An extensive modernisation of machinery was instigated and in identifying improving drainage as a priority, over 5000 meters of new slit drainage was undertaken by Martin Guy Developments. Complementing this was the total decommissioning of the original irrigation system which was no longer fit for purpose. Rainbird, a new state of the art system was installed by Prime Irrigation which will more
effectively deliver water where and when it is needed and, being modular further sprinklers can be added if required. Importantly this new system will reduce the water dependency by upward of 40% and can be operated remotely from a mobile application. With a focus on improving the playing surface of the greens upward of 180 tonnes of sand were applied in the autumn. All greens have had a drill and fill process carried out by Ecosolve which involves coring with 310mm holes and filling with sand and Zeolite which improves the sub base and drainage of the greens and strengthens root growth. This work has dramatically improved the greens with members enjoying excellent conditions through what was a challenging winter period. A tee renovation plan has been implemented lengthening tired and over played tees and

returfing with top quality turfs. In addition to the large practice putting area the club benefits from three separate and distinct practice areas. Members have been fully supportive to the high levels of investment and volunteers willingly take part in monthly working parties undertaking tasks such as divot repair and weeding allowing green staff to concentrate on other important course management activities. With all the improvements taking place at Braintree members can now also enjoy the course all year round with the use of Buggies and Trolleys adding many more playing days during the year. Whilst course improvements are the priority, extensive refurbishment has also been undertaken in the clubhouse lounge, ladies and gentlemen’s changing rooms and internal and external lighting upgrades. An extended overflow car park has been constructed providing ample parking even on the busiest days. The continuing aim of Braintree Golf Club is for the members and visitors to enjoy a course playable all year round and which is complemented by facilities, friendly staff and services that deliver beyond expectations. To experience a genuine welcome and play this gem of a course in North Essex contact Craig Greason Club Secretary on 01371 346079 www.braintreegolfclub.co.uk
Todd Clements’ progression from teenage club rookie to English Amateur champion and England international is testament to Braintree’s successful youth policy. Having started his playing career at Colne Valley as an 11 year old, he joined Braintree three years later since when his progress has been nothing short of phenomenal. “The club’s junior support and bursary has played a massive part in my development through county and national level,” says Todd. “I owe the club a lot. It has been a major factor with its support along with that of club’s professional Richard Todd Clements. Wheeler. “Richard has been extremely influential in my development and has played a great part in what has happened to me. Also, the management and greens staff have played a big part along the way.” Todd also feels the quality and layout of the Stisted course has been another key factor in his successes. “The course has a lot to offer,” he says. “It is always a challenge with its narrow, strategic layout with little room for error. “The quality of the course and practice facilities have also been influential to me as well as to many other juniors who are benefiting from the club’s youth policy.” There may be another youngster who could follow in Todd’s footsteps on the Braintree golfing ladder to success and be recognised at the club as Todd has been. “Since I won the English the reception at the club has been overwhelming,” he adds. “Everyone has made me feel very special. I’ll always have my roots there no matter what I achieve.”

SHORT GAME
SUCCESS been running a number of short game Open clinics during the Spring in readiness for Ithehave late but final arrival of the Summer season. I would say the set-up position for the “finesse” or chip shot is one area which my clients have worked on with dramatic results. Naturally there are others areas which are required within this precise movement but this particular article focuses upon the one element. The contact point is the all important piece of the “jigsaw” a number of golfers I have been privileged to assist had initially set up to the ball with their sternum too far to the right of the ball at address. As you can see from image 1 the right shoulder as a result is below the left by a considerable margin. This is likely to cause some inconsistencies with the strike thus manifesting itself into potential distance control issues. I would recommend setting up feeling your sternum is “covering” the ball at address

There will be a very slight natural “tilt” as the right hand is lower on the handle (right handed golfer) we do not want the shoulders aiming too far left in what we call an open position. Check your set up position next time you are near a mirror so you can relate the visual change with a different feel and let’s chip with confidence. BRILLIANT DAY AT FORRESTER PARK GOLF CLUB rganised by Ernie Free and his team of helpers from Colchester Rotary Club, this O was the second charity day they have run here at Forrester Park Golf Club following from the success of last year’s in aid of Holidays for Heroes Jersey, a fantastic organization that provides free holidays to Jersey for those in the Armed Forces who were injured during their service. The day was a great success with everyone arriving and filling up on coffee and bacon sandwiches before 72 golfers heading out onto the course for a fun 18 holes – there were lots of fabulous prizes up for grabs for the winning teams as well as nearest the pin competitions for the Men and the Ladies; including fancy luggage, plenty of alcohol and vouchers to a number of courses. There was also a special charity hole on the 13th which was £5 to enter and if your ball reached the green you got a sleeve of balls! The weather was very kind, with the sun shining through most of the day and no rain in sight! After the round, the golfers, joined by the helpers as well a few other guests headed upstairs to our beautiful Forrester Suite for a delicious two course meal which was a two meat carvery followed by scrumptious bakewell tart. After this the winners were announced and the raffle was
drawn. In the end they managed to raise an incredible £2060 for Holidays for Heroes! After both the success of this year and last year, we are looking to make this an annual event and hopefully raise as much money as possible for this fantastic cause. Massive thanks goes to Ernie and Marilyn who were instrumental in the whole days success, as well as the hard work of the volunteer helpers as well as all the generous golfers who took part and donated to the charity!

PLAYGOLF’S CLUB CHAMPION JACK
J
ack Moutell (5) had a great weekend, taking control and plotting his way to victory in the 2018 Playgolf Colchester Club Championship. Moutell’s first round saw him take control with a four-shot lead by carding a solid round of gross 73. This included; five pars and a solid four birdies. This was followed up with a second round 79 (9-pars, 9-bogies) to increase his lead and return the lowest gross total of 152. Moutell deserved the title being the only player to card back-to-back sub-80 rounds. The superb weather complimented the excellent course presentation, where the rough was grown up to give superb definition and the greens were hand-cut and ironed to give them additional roll, bringing the undulating topography and tricky pins in to play. This made both days very tough and mentally gruelling, with any wayward shots punished with difficult recovery shots. Jack Blackman (8) took the runner up spot on countback from Conor Garvey (8) in third place after both players carded matching rounds of 77
and 81 (158) with Blackman’s final back nine taking the runner up spot.

T
he Spring Meeting at Maylands at the end of April, where 88 past and present Lady Captains were expected to play, was unfortunately cancelled due to potentially dangerous weather conditions. The Society of Essex Lady Captains AGM was therefore rearranged for mid May before the 1st Summer Meeting at Langdon Hills. Thankfully on this occasion the weather was much improved though the wind did blow which kept the scores of the 4BBB competition down. It was a small meeting by the society’s standards with only 40 ladies playing on the day. Nevertheless, it proved to be a great day finished off with a delicious carvery meal which warmed everyone up after the chilly winds. Our thanks to Langdon Hills
for hosting the event and to Lady Captain Alison Payne and her ladies for helping us to make it a great success. In 4th place with 36 points ocb were Sandra Goff (Crondon Park) & Lesley Sherer (Benton Hall), 3rd also on 36 points were Lynne Southgate (The Burstead) & Margaret Attwood (The Essex). 2nd place went to Maggie Stevenson (formerly North Weald) and Carol Berry (Garon Park). In 1st place and winners of the Froom Cup were Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) and Margaret Dearmer (Langdon Hills who had to play at last minute). Pennie Lipscomb received the cup on behalf of herself and Margaret from Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society) & Alison Payne (Lady Captain Langdon Hills).
T
he Society of Essex Lady Captains have had 2 Friendly matches so far this season. The first, with the Essex Men’s Captains at Orsett played as a mixed team event. The winning team was Pennie Lipscomb, Jeanette Oakes, J Watson & J Oakes. Nearest the pin Ladies Hilary Adams, Gents Bob Morris. The Society also hosted a team of Past Lady Captains from Cambs & Hunts at Theydon Bois. It was a close match but some of the Cambs & Hunts ladies found the tight fairways and ever present trees a little difficult which meant Essex edged out on top 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Thanks to Orsett and Theydon Bois Golf clubs for hosting these matches. - 40 -

BOYCE HILL JUNIOR ACADEMY
O
ver the past few years, PGA Teaching Professional Michael Goodwin has undertaken a tremendous amount of work in building Boyce Hill’s future stars from his Junior Academy.
that will enable the golfer to advance from beginner to playing the main course and as above an option to join the junior section. Parents are most welcome to come along and watch the progress of their child in the Club’s newly constructed “viewing gallery”, where upon they can enjoy something to eat or drink whilst watching the lesson take place every Saturday. For further details or for any questions relating to Academy tuition, Michael can be contacted at Boyce Hill Golf Club on 01268 752565. He will be running a series of Golf Camps through out the summer holiday period.
He offers free taster sessions for boys and girls aged between 6 & 14 in a bid to get more juniors involved in the sport. The aim is that a number of children will take up the sport and become one of Boyce Hill’s ever growing junior academy as well as enriching the Club’s junior section. Michael is taking his tuition out to the local schools in the area in an effort to increase participation and awareness about the game. Any participant can be provided with the necessary equipment and will learn golf technique, rules and etiquette for the game. The Academy programme offers a structure - 44 -

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
irst things first, at time of writing, yes I am leading the singles Order of Merit – literally by one winning hole difference away from Bob Patel from Top Meadow. John Innes from The Notleys will F be very happy to note this fact, but it remains to be seen if I can continue the form in our final League match Away to Garon Park in June. See below for details of current standings, and take a look at our website on 18-19th June to see the results of our final match. More importantly, to all club captains or Jubilee organisers I really want to promote the use of our new online form for submitting results card. Please take a look and check out how easy it is! You can access the form off our main Homepage, and a direct link is here www.jubileecup.com/scorex/ - having personally used this for a recent Notleys GC match to help our captain, Rick Vince, out I can confirm that the League standings for Division E, the Order of Merit charts and all key club information was updated within hours of submission, and completed same day of submission. Please do use, as not only does it help us out as a Committee (there are only 4 of us) but for you and the other clubs, and all our readers, you get an almost instantaneous feed uploaded to the web! To really sign-post how friendly our competition is, I wanted to forward on a note from the Nazeing Jubilee Cup Captain Ted Langer – Ted had an issue in arranging his Home match against Blakes and in the spirit of the competition, he agreed with his opponents to actually play on their Home turf! Nazeing therefore actually defeated their opponents Away, and was also clear that he “would like to go on record to say that we are extremely grateful to Bob Hewes (Blakes JC Captain), the Club, and their staff for being able to cater for the match, not only were they Div A Abridge 5.0 v 4.0 Mardyke Valley gracious hosts and looked after us very well, every Div A Essex (The) 7.0 v 2.0 Royal Epping Forest match was played in great spirit.” Truly the spirit Div A Top Meadow GC 7.5 v 1.5 Burstead (The) Div B Ballards Gore 3.5 v 5.5 Playgolf Colchester we strive for in the Jubilee Cup. Singles Order of Merit: www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/playsing.htm Whilst the below charts only the Top 10 singles players, it Is amazing to note that there are actually 13 players who have played and won their three league matches in the 2018 Jubilee Cup – with only the hole difference of their games setting them apart. Still plenty to play for! As such Peter Cowie from Clacton, Eric Howlett from Five Lakes, and Malcolm McIntrye from Top Meadow warrant a mention also. Well done so far! No 1

EVER WONDERED HOW YOU REACH A POINT AND YOUR SCORES LEVEL OUT? YOU’RE PROBABLY LOOKING AT THE WRONG THINGS TO IMPROVE
TRY THIS SIMPLE TIP
A
s the weather is now improving, the evenings drawing out nicely and the competition golf at your respective clubs starting I wanted to give you all something simple to think about on how to improve your skill levels on the course and enjoy the evening sun. In golf our club handicap is our marker of our golfing ability and something we all strive to lower but is it a true reflection of our all round game especially as golf courses vary so much in distance and par.
for boys and girls there being a handicap limit but hopefully this very simple change will help you enjoy this wonderful game. In America they have just introduced a system called the longleaf tee system which you can check out for yourselves on their website www.longleafteesystem.com this system has been founded by the US kids golf foundation and American golf course architects association and basically the golf course is designed with
Junior golf in particular can place to much emphasis on handicap and this as I have seen many times can cause children to give up the game. I totally get in the national championships
numerous tee boxes for you to play from according to how far you hit the ball. If you look at the picture the system shows you a measured golf course to play relative to how far - 48 -
you hit the ball. The par 3,4,&5 holes should all range between certain distances to give you a total distance of your course. Based on your distance you hit the ball this measured course you should play to par. I think it’s great as it really highlights the good and bad areas in your game and there’s so many different games you can play this way to improve. For instance whilst in America recently for the PGA show we tried it and also there was an interview on the golf channel where the great Jack Nicklaus stated that he plays from forward tees now so he gets to hit the same club to the green as Dustin Johnson or Rory Mcilroy would ... simple, genius and fun and if it’s good enough for Jack it’s certainly good enough for me! Think about it you can now create a course of you’re own to suit your own needs. Simple, effective and fun. We generally have 3 teeing areas in this country but you can make your own. I have a few juniors that I encourage to play off of the red tees some from the yellow tees and some from white tees depending on the distance they hit the ball or a combination of the 3. This also depends on what they want their career to be as I encourage some of the girls to play either from the yellow or white tees as this gives them yardage’s of courses on both the LET and LPGA tours respectively. This gives me and more importantly their parents a way of judging where their golfing ability is and what their skill levels are in each department of the game. It also gives some of the younger juniors who are constantly hitting 3 shots to the green on a par 4 a chance to make some birdies and also to learn to deal with the mental side of breaking par. When Tiger woods was a junior he and his dad had what they called “Tiger par” and although Rory McIlroy as I found out was encouraged to play from the white tees when he was a youngster Hollywood golf club only measures 6000 yards from the white tees and is par 70 so it still represented a chance to score. Try it as it gives you a chance to literally measure where your game is and where the improvements are you need to make to lower your scores. If you play 9 holes during the week play from different tees you’ll see your golf course from a totally different perspective and also use all different clubs in your bag. You’ll be surprised how fun it is and what you learn about your game.

GLUTE STRENGTH AND WHY ITS SO IMPORTANT very single golfer I come across has a poor set of glutes or more so a poor movement E pattern in the posterior chain (back of the body). If you do not know what the "glutes" are it's your butt muscles. The glutes not only stabilise the body (back and pelvis) but are key in producing power. Therefore, in golf, the glutes are absolutely vital! If I come across someone with back pain I would always check the glutes. Sometimes they are not firing, sometimes they are so tight they have “switched off or the movement pattern has got a little mixed up and something else is doing its job for it ... the back! The glutes are reasonably easy to strengthen if you know how ... below are some exercises to get you started, you will need to couple this with some stretching and mobilisations but this will get you started:
THE CLAM: Lying on your side, legs at 45 degrees and keeping the heels together. Lift the top leg, almost like opening a book or a clam shell. 60 secs each side and perform every day.
THE GLUTE BRIDGE: Lay on your back, knees bent and lift from the glutes into a bridge position. Pay attention to the glutes and concentrate on them doing the work. Hold for 60 secs and repeat daily. The exercises above are very basic and aim to fire the glutes and get them working. Seek a good personal trainer preferably qualified in golf biomechanics to help you further the glutes. Try and make the above 2 exercises part of your daily routine and let me know how you get on! - 50 -

n Sunday 22 April The Warren Golf Club hosted the Essex under 18 team to contest the Mike Thirkettle Trophy. This is an annual event that gives both sides a chance to test their foursomes and singles match-play skills in preparation for the coming season. Whilst the 4½ – ½ score after the morning foursomes gave the Essex team a clear numerical advantage the truth is that the matches were very much closer than that score suggests as the afternoon singles were to prove. Essex lead man Curtis Knipes fell to an unusual defeat to an in-form County Colts player Josh Cardy, which reversed the result from the morning foursomes. Throughout the afternoon singles neither side established a clear advantage as the matches ebbed and flowed with the ultimate outcome of a 5-5 stalemate being just about right. Courtesy of their morning advantage in the foursomes the Essex u18 team emerged as winners by 9½ to 5½ and regained the Mike Thirkettle Trophy. Our thanks go to Mike Thirkettle and The Warren Golf Club for hosting this match and providing some much-needed breakfast and lunchtime catering. Mike Thirkettle is pictured with the Under 18 team. ESSEX v MIDDLESEX Thorndon Park Golf Club – Tuesday 8th May 2018 he County Seniors first match of the season was at Home at Thorndon Park against Middlesex, although a very small County (in the number of Clubs they have) we have found in the past they T can be extremely competitive. When we arrived at Thorndon Park it looked magnificent in the Spring sunshine and with the old Mansion looking down as if it were overseeing proceedings. Essex were fielding a near full strength squad and were confident of a good win to start the year off. We stationed ourselves behind the 7th green and as the matches came through we appeared to be narrowly up in most matches and well ahead in a couple, as the matches filtered through the short 12th Essex were still ahead in most, but Middlesex had gained some momentum as the matches were getting closer with one or two narrowly in their favour. Moving to the 16th green to see the matches coming down the closing stretch, we arrived there to find Steve Rooney had already won with 4 holes to go and two games had already gone through, we chased Ian Moore up the 17th and were rewarded with a win at the 17th. THE 2018 ESTUARY TROPHY
T
he Inaugural playing of the Estuary Trophy competition took place in early May, 36 holes at Orsett on 4th May followed by 36 holes at Boyce Hill on 10th May. This 72 hole event is a Men’s World Amateur Golf Ranking event, one of only three events in Essex which hold that status. The first 36 holes at Orsett were played in conjunction with the Threadgill Trophy, and the high standard of golf was set in the morning round with six players breaking par. The most notable being former County Captain, Jay Beisser (Basildon), who shot a remarkable 7 under par 65. His closest challenger was Shay McQueen (Chelmsford) with three under par 69. In the afternoon the high standard was maintained with Jamie Richards (Abridge) recording the best return, a five under par 67. At the halfway point Jay Beisser was leading with a 135 total, followed by Shay McQueen on 142 and then Ben Humphrey (Chelmsford), Keating Trophy winner Jordan Slater (Harwich & Dovercourt), and Jamie Richards all on one under par total of 143. The competition then moved on to Boyce Hill, where the second two rounds were played along Play off players. side the Boyce Hill Challenge Bowl. Our halfway leader struggled to a 75 in the morning round, leaving the door open for the rest of the field to close the gap. Shay McQueen produced another steady round with a 69 to close in one shot behind Jay, with Jamie Richards and Jordan Slater also gaining ground with scores of 70. The best score in the third round was recorded by Jack Brown (Chelmsford) with a 66, closely followed by Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill) with a 67. In the final round Shay McQueen recorded his third round of 69 in the competition to set the target of 280. He was not in the Clubhouse long before being joined on 280 by Jamie Richards who returned the best final round score of 67. In the final group to finish Jay Beisser carded a score of 70 to also finish on 280. A three way play-off would be required to establish the first name to go on the Estuary Trophy. So the three players headed to the 18th tee, a 160 yard par 3, with a large gathering of onlookers waiting around the green and Clubhouse area creating a great atmosphere. All three players hit the green, but with a difficult pin position no-one could feel a safe two putt was in hand. The tension increased as all three players faced lengthy putts for their 3, Shay and Jay holed their attempts, but unfortunately Jamie was unable to follow them in and so dropped out of the play-off. Having returned to the 18th tee Shay hit his tee shot to within 10 feet of the hole, with Jay’s reply finishing 3 foot from the pin. Shay missed his tricky putt and had to settle for a 3 and watch Jay hole his birdie putt to win the play-off. A great finish to the event. Our thanks to both Orsett GC and Boyce Hill GC for the joint hosting of this event, and to Jay Beisser our first winner of the Trophy. Winner – Jay Beisser.

Match Report
ESSEX COUNTY TEAM v BB&O Chelmsford Golf Club – Sunday 13th May 2018
unday 13th May saw our first League match of the season at our home venue of Chelmsford Golf Club. The visitors, BB&O were our main rivals in 2017 having dropped our only league S points in a 6 - 6 draw at Frilford Heath. Our superior game wins just pipping BB&O to the title. This was going to be no pushover, especially as on paper some of our top players were not available. The course was looking immaculate and after some overnight rain the sun shone bright during the whole of the match. Chelmsford members Arron Edwards-Hill and Michael Gilbert led off and quickly showed our opposition we were in the right mood with 3&2 win over their top pairing of Ollie Huggins and George Bayliss. This form continued and by lunch, despite some excellent golf from the BB&O pairings, all the games had gone our way with a convincing 4 - 0 whitewash. This fine form continued into the afternoon singles with wins for Arron Edwards-Hill, Michael Gilbert, Ricky Lee, Callum Pipe (Callum was 7 under par in winning his game 5&4 ), Will Percival and Jamie Richards. We ran out winners by 6.5 to 1.5 in the afternoon singles. Match score, a very convincing 10.5 to 1.5 win to Essex. A very satisfying victory coming down to some excellent putting on Chelmsford's undulating greens. This bodes well for the rest of the campaign. Next match will be an opportunity for BB&O to extract revenge in the Eastern Counties Foursomes at Seacroft Golf Club in Skegness on 19/20th May where we will be defending the title we won last year against eight other Counties. Our thanks to Chelmsford for their usual immaculate hospitality and for their members allowing us the use of the well prepared course, and also to Stuart Gilbert for managing the team on this occasion. U18 Inter counties League
ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE v BB&O Lambourne Golf Club – Sunday 13 May 2018
O
n a splendid course and matching weather the U18 Inter Counties League county opened its Under 18 Inter-counties team Essex v Herts v BB&O league season at Lambourne in Berkshire against Hertfordshire and the home team Bucks, Berks & Oxfordshire. To call this a tough opener would be something of an understatement as both opposition teams benefited from the inclusion of age group England International squad members. The difficulty of the Essex task was compounded by the absence of two key squad members, but in adversity comes opportunity, which Harry Moncur grabbed with both hands for it was he who emerged from his encounter undefeated with two wins and a couple of eagles to boot. Captain Callum Newton dealt admirably with his Hertfordshire opponent but BB&O England man Conor Gough, a past Reid Trophy and Douglas Johns Trophy winner, arriving fresh from his recent win at the Fairhaven Trophy proved to be a much sterner challenge and for once Callum fell short losing narrowly 2&1. The most tightly contested encounter of the day involved Harrison Linney who with his opponents Harrison Arnold and England man Max Hopkins knocked in seventeen birdies and two eagles between them. Great to watch, but so disappointing when you hole out with a birdie only to see your opponent pitch in from thirty yards for an eagle as young Linney did. When the scores were finally added up Hertfordshire narrowly headed BB&O by half a point with Essex unusually trailing some way behind. So, it was a bad day at the office but sometimes that’s just the way it is and you have to take it on the chin and say well played to the opponents. As always our thanks go to our hosts BB&O and in particular Lambourne GC for the use of their facilities and splendid catering. EASTERN COUNTIES FOURSOMES Seacroft Golf Club, Skegness, Lincolnshire – Sat/Sun 19th and 20th May 2018
Team: Jamie Richards and Curtis Knipes (Abridge), Michael Gilbert Shay McQueen and Brandon Meads (Chelmsford), Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill), Will Percival (Orsett), Callum Pipe (Braintree), Ben & Josh Tobin (Basildon), Jordan Slater (Harwich & Dovercourt).
annual tournament comprises 9 Counties competing over 4 rounds of foursomes in teams of players (5 two balls) with each county playing all the others. TAshis10defending champions, Essex were obviously highly fancied. However, with 6 team members missing from last year’s side, (4 of them playing in the Irish Amateur Championship at Royal County Down and our County Captain Andy May deciding that this would be an ideal weekend to get married!!) our own expectations were somewhat of a cautious nature. New players brought into the squad this year were Shay McQueen, Jordan Slater, Ben and Josh Tobin and Ricky Lee. Our first match on Saturday morning saw us drawn against Norfolk and BB&O whom we had soundly beaten in the league only 6 days earlier at home club Chelmsford. They were out for revenge and fielded a much stronger team on paper than ours. A tough session on the demanding links at Seacroft with hard slick greens ended 2 ½ all with BB&O and 3/2 winners against Norfolk with two wins each for new guys Ben Tobin and Ricky Lee and the same for Jordan Slater and Michael Gilbert and 1 ½ pts for old hands Will Percival and Callum Pipe, a 5 ½ point haul out of 10 which under the circumstances was a satisfactory start. We made some changes to the pairings in the afternoon session, and these changes paid dividends with only one loss all afternoon we ran out with 3 ½ points from the Leicestershire game and 4 from Cambridgeshire, giving a total for the first day of 13 points leaving us in second place, one point behind BB&O. The scene was set for a fascinating second day. Sunday morning on another fine and breezy day brought Essex, Bedfordshire and Suffolk together. The lads played some majestic golf, beating Bedfordshire 4:1 and Suffolk 3:2. Another 7 points in the - 56 -

With 4 points in the bag from the first four matches the final pairing of Brandon Meads and Shay McQueen came to the 18th hole dormy one up in both games, it was looking like a 6-point haul for the afternoon which would give us a good chance to secure the trophy. The last hole was a tough par 3 into a strong breeze and a loss of hole to both opponents resulted in just two halves giving us a 5-point haul which we felt would not be enough to win left a group of audibly disappointed Essex players and officials cursing that last hole. Euphoria returned when we learned that BB&O could also only manage 5 points from their endeavours which gave Essex victory by a slender one point. Back to back winners of this trophy for the first time and only our 4th win in the 64 years history of the event. REPORT FROM THE ESSEX OPEN Thorpe Hall Golf Club – 10th/11th May 2018 And so to the main event, the 36 hole 98th Essex Open which was closely fought as always and the result uncertain until the last players had completed their second rounds. The morning round saw joint leaders on 4 under par, Robert Coles and Brett Taylor who had returned from injury following a car crash to make his 2018 debut on the circuit. 2 shots behind at the half way stage were Lloyd Kennedy from Chelmsford Golf Club and amateur Ben Tobin from Basildon Golf Club. There were a number of players on level par, including Dulcie Sverdloff and current Essex PGA Captain Mark Talbott, both from the host club, Thorpe Hall Golf Club.
Jason Levermore with his winning team of Mike Partridge, Mike Duley and John Meyer with PGA Captain Mark Talbott.
espite a cold wind, Thorpe Hall Golf Club was bathed in sunshine for most of the D two day event and the course was presented beautifully by the green staff. The Pro-Am was played in two halves with a morning flight followed by an afternoon flight. At the end of the morning’s play the lead was held in the team event by Australian new-comer Aaron Cox with his team from Elsenham Golf club with a score of 83 points. However, in the afternoon, that score was overtaken several times until the team prize eventually went to the team with Jason Levermore from Little Channels who recorded an amazing score of 91 points. This was enough for a convincing win from the joint runners up, the team from Colchester with Chris Cutchie and the Burnham on Crouch team who were playing with Professional Mark Stokes. In the individual Professional event, there were again joint runners up with Jason Levermore and Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club returning 1 under par score of 70 losing out by a shot to last year’s Essex PGA Captain Chris Cutchie who took the top prize with a 2 under Chris Cutchie with par score of 69. Mark Talbott.
Essex Open champion 2018 Brett Taylor with Mark Talbott.
A biting wind gradually blew up in the afternoon and scores generally were higher than the morning although Sam Teer from Clacton Golf Club defied the odds to record an excellent score of 4 under par 67 which proved to be the best score in the afternoon. This shot him up the leader board to eventually finish tied 4th with
- 58 -
amateurs Jay Beisser and Ben Tobin who was just unable to continue his quest for the title. However, Jay and Ben shared the prize for the best amateur scores. The lead for the title of Essex Open Champion 2018 fluctuated during the afternoon between the two morning leaders Coles and Taylor with Dulcie Sverdloff trying to improve her score and threaten the outright lead. The title finally went to Brett Taylor who shot a fine 2 under par 69 which was enough to take the title by 2 shots from Robert Coles and by a further 2 shots from Dulcie Sverdloff. This was a remarkable win by Taylor who was unable to play until very recently due to the car accident and yet held his nerve and his swing together to prevail. The event was sponsored by Ambulance Transfers Ltd and the Essex PGA are grateful for their significant assistance.
THE 2017/18 PORSCHE ORDER OF MERIT
he Essex Open was the last event in this season’s Order of Merit, sponsored by Porsche T East London and Porsche Colchester. The top 3 places going into the Essex Open were very close with Jason Levermore, Robert Coles and Lloyd Kennedy only being separated by a few points. Despite Coles finishing second in the Open and collecting 12 points, Levermore secured the Order of Merit title by picking up 6 points for finishing joint 4th Professional and the 6 points received was sufficient for him to take the title by a narrow 2 point margin. The Essex PGA are again grateful to Porsche for their continued sponsorship of the Order of Merit.

Galvin Green Premium Shirts Get Sunshine Boost alvin Green, the leading brand of high performance G golf clothing, has seen a surge in orders for its high-end polo shirts on the back of rising temperatures and recent European Tour wins for two brand ambassadors. Shirt sales from the premium VENTIL8™ PLUS Cool Layer range worn by South African Open champion Chris Paisley and China Open champion Alexander Björk to win maiden Tour titles since January, have risen by XX% on the same period last year. The latest collection includes seven different styles and up to eight colourway options in sizes ranging from S-3XL. Demand for both the classy MARLON (Black with four colour trim options) and MAYER (six striped versions featuring up to four colourways) styles in particular have grown in recent weeks since sunshine arrived in the UK for the first time this year. They have a RRP of £85. These styles offer an extremely high level of breathability, exceptional moisture wicking properties and UPF 20+ protection. They are made from an exclusive blend of 97% polyester wicking fibre and 3% elastane that Galvin Green has found to be the perfect mix for maximum performance and comfort, without the need to iron. The Official Supplier of Weatherwear to the 2018 European Ryder Cup Team is delighted to see more of its comprehensive apparel range proving so popular. “These stand out polo shirts are really flying and we are taking on more orders by the day as the weather improves for golfers to play more often,” said Greg Pearce, Managing Director of Galvin Green UK & Ireland. www.galvingreen.com
announces details and a UK arrival date for its follow-up fairway product, the 3-Wood. Already in play on the PGA TOUR Champions in the hands of John Daly, Rocco Mediate, Mark Calcavecchia and others, the new 3-Wood is available to buy in the UK from June 2018. Prepare to send your best-ever fairway wood shots soaring to the heart of the green with the Vertical Groove 3-Wood, unveiled by double Major-winner and Vertical Groove Golf brand ambassador John Daly at the 2018 PGA Merchandise Show in January 2018. With superb turf interaction the 180cc Vertical Groove 3-Wood features a confidence-inspiring shallow face which gets the ball aloft easily and creates amazing hang-time, with the same distinctive sound and feel which drew praise for the Vertical Groove Driver. 17 scoring lines run vertically on the clubface, instead of the traditional horizontal orientation. This patented Vertical Groove Technology is proven to reduce spin at impact, forcing tighter dispersion and leading to straighter ball flight and greater distance. The technology’s effectiveness was proven by the performance of the Vertical Groove Driver in its first season on the PGA TOUR Champions in 2017, ending the year with two victories and ranked #1 in Driving Distance and #2 in Driving Accuracy, and prompting the Company to expand its product line. The Vertical Groove 3-Wood also incorporates 8g tungsten sole weights which are positioned according to the loft of the club. In the 14-degree Tour model, the weight is positioned forward to provide a flatter, more penetrating ball flight. The 15-degree model places the weight at the rear of the sole, helping golfers to launch the ball higher and providing more stability after offcentre strikes. The sole weight also is available in 3- to 12-gram custom options to match individual players’ fitting preferences. A variable-thickness cupface design, featuring a special 455 maraging steel alloy which enables the Vertical Groove 3-Wood to achieve USGA limits for face flexure, wraps the clubface around the crown and sole, adjoined to a 17-4 steel body. The 43-inch Vertical Groove 3-Wood is currently available as a Right Hand model, supplied with the premium-grade, Tour-proven Aldila NV®2KV shaft in the following flexes: Green 45g L (Ladies), Green 50g A (Senior), Blue 60g R (Regular), Blue 70g S (Stiff) and Blue 70g X (X-Stiff). Alternative shaft options from Fujikura, Mitsubishi and Aldila are also available. The Vertical Groove 3-Wood is equipped with Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips in standard, midsize and oversize models. Additional Vertical Groove Fairway Woods, including a 5-Wood and a Hybrid, are currently undergoing extensive testing for launch later in 2018. www.verticalgroove.co.uk

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before.
