Epping Golfers Just Miss Out on National Title

A

husband-and-wife pairing of amateur golfers from Epping just missed out on a prestigious national title when they competed in the mixed pairs final of the 2016 Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo, in Marrakech. Train operator Leah Fitzgerald, 35, a 12handicapper, and husband and fellow Theydon Bois GC member Peter, 45, who plays off 10, won two of their matches at the Robert Trent Jones-designed PalmGolf Marrakech Palmeraie to finish third in the competition. But they still enjoyed the experience in Morocco, where they received complimentary return flights from Gatwick, courtesy of the event's partner British Airways; five nights’ luxury bed-and-breakfast accommodation in the five-star Palmeraie Palace; four rounds of championship golf; a welcome cocktail reception; and a gala dinner and prize presentation. Leah said: “It’s been a brilliant week: nice sunshine, nice country, great company. The feel of the sunshine has been amazing. We keep getting

texts about how bad the weather is at home. “We’ve also found time to visit the medina for some souvenir shopping - that was an experience.” Peter, a managing director, added: “It’s madness down in the square, enjoyable madness. You don't feel threatened at all, but it is madness, especially crossing the roads! We're dreading walking out of Gatwick as it will be slightly cooler that what we've been used to out here. “It’s a very good event, nothing's been left to chance, it's all run like clockwork. I'm sure we'll be entering again. Generally speaking our golf ’s been ok. We'll be looking to go two steps further next time round.” Four competitions culminated at the grand final, sponsored for a third year by the Moroccan National Tourist Office (MNTO): singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs. Each finalist played up to four qualifying rounds merely to reach the regional final, with the knockout rounds taking place between June and September, and the regional finals in October.

Night Golf at The Notleys Golf Club

Club Competition secretary Peter Watts geared up with head torch.

otleys Golf Club Captain Darran “Daz” Liversidge held his last social event at the club on a wintry (but clear) dark night, as a host of Notleys golfers took part in the annual Night Golf event. Using brightly glowing multi-coloured balls, a plethora of glow-sticks marking out the greens, flags and the holes, a

fantastic event was held on a specially designed “cross-country” nine hole course. Club Competition Secretary Peter Watts can be seen on the photos, geared up with his head torch. Echoes of laughter was all that could be heard (and not much could be seen, other than golf balls flying across the sky like tracer bullets) in this fun event, which also had the serious backing of supporting Daz’s chosen charity: “The CSS Charitable Trust” www.csspeople.co.uk/ourblog/view/css-charitable-trustguidelines-for-applicants. As well as individual prize giving for some quality and enjoyable golf, the night was won by Mark “Dave” Clements with 23 points, the members raised a further £500 for Daz’s charity, bringing his full total up to £4000 for the year. Daz, seen here at the prize giving, said, “Thank you to all who attended tonight, and everyone who has contributed over the past year! My last charity event as Captain of the Notleys Golf Club was a fantastic night golf way to round off the year”. Preparations for the 2018 event will now fall to incoming club Captain Dene I’Anson who will drive-in first week in April.

ith the weather being considerably better than the last 3 winters and the introduction of some really good performing product we have seen excellent sales in January and February. Thank you for the support. Now we are into March we are seeing longer days, all the Spring/Summer clothing in the store with their usual bright colours as well as lots other new products which for us and you should be really exciting!!

At last an accurate launch monitor that can show you exactly how your current clubs perform against the new technology. Clubs from Callaway, Cobra, Lynx, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, Srixon and Wilson can be compared to find the most suitable ones for you. Whether your looking for more length, greater accuracy, higher launch, shaft suitability for your swing or filling those missing wedge gaps, Skytrak and the team at Nevada Bobs Colchester can help. All the information is projected on a 42 inch TV screen so you can see exactly what is happening in real time and 3D! Suitable for Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges (right and left handed).

What's started well this year? Well in woods and irons we have seen a fantastic reaction to the new Callaway Epic driver. While expensive we have seen some remarkable figures on our Skytrak machine for improving not only length but also dispersion (the ball keeping on it's line). Srixon irons have gone very well and sales of wedges have been very strong. We think the wedges increase is due to us using our Skytrak launch monitor for wedge gapping. This means you can come in, try different brands and once you decide which brand you prefer we can then get the right lofts and bounces to ensure the yardage spacing is correct. We've an offer on the next page to give you an added incentive to come in and try. The ladies section is now very full with it's clothing and over 25 different shoes to choose from. We are Footjoy's number 2 seller of their ladies shoes in the south east region of the country (behind Woburn GC).

Men's shoes are also fully stocked with the Skechers brand leading the way along with Callaway, Footjoy, Adidas, Nike and Underarmour. The Skechers styles and comfort are brilliant for the money. We are also keeping our 3 ball offers going this month on 2015/16 Srixon Z Stars as well as the buy one get one half price on Srixon white AD333 and Soft feel. Finally I must not leave out electric trolleys. Both Powakaddy and Motocaddy have a number of different models to suit all with the lithium battery now becoming the norm due to it's added benefits over the very dated lead acid battery. Come in for an overview and demonstration.

Phil

We look forward to seeing you.

Red Romantic Valentine’s Day at Newton Green T here was a sea of red when Rebecca Evans made a St Valentine’s Day captain’s drive-in appearance at Newton Green Golf Club. Also present to give a romantic send-off to her year in office was husband Gareth, who is due to become the club’s men’s captain in the near future. It will be the first time in the 110 year history of the club that a husband and wife will hold the captaincies in the same year. A third member of the family, Boris the dog – sporting a red scarf – was also present for Rebecca’s drive-off. Rebecca, with a handicap of 18, represents Suffolk Women on England Golf, and also runs marathons and other long-distance events. Her drive-off performance also set a new record for women’s golf at the club, as she hit her shot out-of-bounds! However, the competition to

predict the length of her drive did not go unrewarded.Vice-captain Lizzie Johnson had predicted the new captain’s wayward shot and took the prize for guessing the distance of Rebecca’s drive. Before teeing off, the new captain watched retiring captain Sally Cade putt out her season on the 18th hole.

Margaret is the Clear Winner in Colchester Golf Club’s Ladies Stableford

T

here was no doubting the winner in last week’s ladies stableford. Margaret Carter was seven points clear of second place with 32 points from the fourteen holes played. Missing out the four valley holes she got a regulation 10 points from the five holes played on the front nine but it was the back nine where she accelerated away from the rest of the field of forty-four ladies. With her 24 handicap she amassed 17 points after six holes, including a four for four on the 12th. Bogeys on the next two holes added another five points and a blob on the last hardly mattered. In second place was Daphne Bloomfield (31) who returned 25 points and in third spot was Beverley Parker (21) with 24 points. Fourth with 23 points was Marilyn Free (31) and there were six ladies all returning 22 points lead by Sara Cock (30) followed by Sharon Manby (30), Janet Tebbutt (25), Fiona Prentice (20), Pat Kettle (18) and Linda Freeman (19).

SHOT SAVING S

ince making a return to competitive golf now I am an old boy playing Senior Professional Golf it dawned on me how the best players manage their game doing a few simple things that enable them not to waste precious shots around the course. Over the next few editions of Essex Golfer I am going to help you save shots around the course by encouraging you to do a few very simple things. In this edition the simple task of marking your ball and how you do it can pay great dividends whilst putting. Picture 1 show exactly how I mark my ball a straight line using one of the many machines on the market today and a dot right in the centre.

and more holed putts. Try this simple idea and see how you get on. You can also join me at Pravets in Bulgaria 20 to 27 May for one of my overseas tuition holidays, full details on www.garypikegolf.com

THE LINE Firstly let’s take the straight line and obviously you are going to aim that line on the intended line of the putt Picture 2. Secondly now stand back from the ball a couple of paces and hold your putter as I am doing in Picture 3 over the line on-top of the ball. This will give you a very clear indication that you have lined the ball on the correct line you have chosen. Once I am over the ball it is a simple process of lining my putter, (I prefer putters with a clear straight line on-top,) with the line on the ball. Picture 4. THE DOT My attention now is only focussed on the dot on-top of the ball, on the backswing this helps me remain centred and stable and on the forward swing I hit through to the dot, not the back of the ball, this helps with a far more consistent strike

Matt Stables is Head Coach of Four Shots Lower Academy at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre and A PGA Advanced Professional. Our Aim is to improve your scores by 4 shots over the next 12 months by giving you some simple proven techniques on all parts of your game to make a real difference to your game. We will make a plan suited to you to and your current ability to improve your game and increase your confidence and fun you have on the course. www.MattStablesGolf.com

COULD YOU GO 4 SHOTS LOWER THIS YEAR? Shot 1- Chip your Ball Close T he idea of improving your game by 4 shots may be a big claim especially if your game has been at the same level for a while ... But, to break that down we aim to improve your game by saving you 1 shot in 4 different keys areas of your game. If you look at other sports, especially Team GB at the Olympics, they have had great sucess with the marginal gains approach ... So how does this apply to you? 1. Could you chip it closer? 2. Could you improve your course management? 3. Could you control the speed of your putts a bit better? 4. Could you improve your strike on the ball?

Keep 60% of your weight on the front foot Most people people struggle to make good contact on chip shots meaning your low point is before the ball. To control your low point one of the few key things you need to do is to keep 60% of you weight on your front foot. If the weight moves to the back foot at all it usually means a poor strike ...

HOW TO GET STARTED OR GET GOING AGAIN? BOOK A PLAYER ASSESSMENT

If you want to get started and go 4 four shots lower I invite you to an initial 60 minute Player Assessment at a discounted rate of ÂŁ25. During the assessment we will devise an improvement plan tailored to suit your individual requirements. By the end of your assessment you will understand which areas of your game you need to improve. Call 01376 510 222 to book yours.

I hope 4 shots lower doesn't sound like such a big claim to you now and you can see how getting a bit better in these key areas can save you some shots!

Masterclass A

s many of you would have seen from the past few issues of Essex Golfer, we held two Masterclasses in Essex during January and February. The results, to say the least, have been fantastic!

The vast majority of golfers realise that on the golf course, the mind can be your biggest enemy, continually asking less helpful questions of you; Will I hit that tree? What if it goes in the bunker? Every time I play this hole I stick it Out of Bounds! Just don’t top it off the tee! ... and then 30 seconds later walk away muttering ‘I knew I was going to do that’! Whilst your mind can be your biggest enemy, it can also be your greatest friend ... if you are in control of it! As Justin Rose famously said after the Ryder Cup success in Medinah, ‘In this game, you don’t have to be in total control of your golf ball, as long as you are in total control of your mind’! So with a great mix of PGA Professionals, Men, Ladies, Seniors and Cadets in attendance and with handicaps ranging from 36 to scratch, our days began. Here at The Mind Zone, we believe it is vitally important to not only present skills and techniques, but to ensure everything is made simple and user-friendly. The feedback we received, within a week of the Masterclass, demonstrates just how effective this can be.

Here’s some of the comments we have received so far:

Had the round of my life yesterday Lady member of Chelmsford Golf Club

Having read most of the books on the subject, I didn’t expect to learn a lot, if I am honest. I was wrong!

Barry Turner - Five Lakes Golf Club

I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone wanting to improve their golf! Liz Potter - Bentley Golf Club

Attending the day was great, Gary and David showed myself and a group of mixed ability golfers how important psychology is in the game! Sarah Smith - PGA Professional

We are currently planning more Mind Zone Masterclass Sessions, details of which can be found on our website www.themindzone.com or in future editions of Essex Golfer. Inspiring Performance.

t I p e Ke e l p m i S A gym routine to some people can be very overwhelming, especially if you are a golfer as golf itself is a very time consuming sport. How do i fit in the gym? However, it does not have to be 2 hours 5 days a week to make a difference. Quality training over quantity of training is very important. This is where you must employ someone (a personal trainer) to write your gym programmes who can bespoke write them for you to fit into your time frame and your schedule to have optimal results. In my opinion, cardiovascular exercise i.e. running, bike, cross trainer etc for the everyday golfer is totally unnecessary, I feel its a waste of precious training time. Golfers walk round the course and for me this is enough cardio. If you were a pro I may add in some HIIT training but would never prioritise it. When designing programmes for golfers in my mind i ask “what functional carryover does this exercise have?” If it doesn't then its not in the programme ... riding a bike for an hour, to me, has absolutely no functional carryover. So, how do i keep it simple for my golfers? Golf

involves your body to work together, one side of the body aids the other side to produce an explosive movement, therefore, I design programmes that integrate the body and rarely would I isolate muscle groups unless I am training a very advanced athlete. Simply, if you improve the strength of your body as a whole working together your golf will improve. An example of an integrated exercise - an exercise that will get your body more efficient at working together is a one arm dynamic cable pull. I am attaching a YouTube link below for the exercise technique. Give 15 reps each side a go and repeat 3 times. Its a very demanding exercise that uses every single muscle group in the body, just like golf! https://youtu.be/RXdTUBqIiHs Determine your goal with a trainer and then “keep it simple”, progress slowly and do what fits into your life, unmaintainable will end with you giving up and finding training overwhelming! I love to hear from people so please let me know how you get on with the exercise above.

Graphite Iron Shafts

the good, the bad and the ugly THE BAD: Marketing. I think graphite iron shafts are marketed towards lady or senior golfers or any golfer looking for more swing speed. Not true, any golfer can play graphite but swing speed is found in playing the correct shaft for you, irrespective of material.

G

raphite has generally always been seen as ideal for ladies, seniors and junior golfers. But is graphite an option for players with faster swing speeds? A few years ago the answer was a definite no but this is no longer the case. Improvements in manufacturing and better materials means graphite is an option for any golfer regardless of strength and speed. Graphite offers a far greater range of weights, I currently have graphite iron shafts from 40g to 125g in 10g increments which is far more than steel could ever offer. So, graphite iron shafts - the good, the bad and the ugly!

LET’S START WITH THE UGLY: Cheap, poor quality graphite shafts. This type of product is really detrimental to a golfers performance. In fact in some cases this type of product is almost unplayable due to the fact that you need your iron shafts to be matched together as a set, poor quality equals inconsistency so essentially rather than having a set of irons you end up with a set of heads with different shafts in - even though they all look the same. Paint is a powerful thing, as many ‘budget’ shafts have very little graphite in them at all, fibreglass and resin are the main materials with only just enough graphite to be able to use the graphite name. When it comes to graphite shafts you really do get what you pay for.

THE GOOD: Graphite is great for elbow or wrist injuries as the material transfers hardly any vibration from impact to the golfer. Shaft weights (measured in grams) start at around 40 grams, ideal for any player who’s wrists are not very strong and struggles to support the club at the top of the swing - but here is the cool part, graphite shafts now come in weights up to 125 grams so no other shaft material offers a more varied weight range - they are actually heavier than many steel shafts! Graphite also gives you lots of options when custom building irons. In the past I have built irons with 50g shafts in the long irons, 60g shafts in the mid irons and 70g shafts in the short irons. This gave a higher flight in the longer clubs that transitioned to a stronger flight in the shorter irons. So, to summarise graphite should be an option for any player, in fact there is actually a lot more ‘technology’ in graphite over steel.Yes, they are a little more expensive but if that is the right shaft for you to play then don’t be concerned that graphite is only for certain ‘types’ of golfer.

Report from Woodbridge Pro-Am

he PGA in Essex returned to the Suffolk course for its first Pro-Am of 2017 and the full field indicated the popularity of the venue. The weather was dry but a cold wind made scoring difficult and this was shown in the number of Professionals scoring under par. The clear winner was Craig Housden from Channels Golf Club with an excellent round of 68 and enough to win by 2 shots from Matt King from Rayleigh Golf Range making one of his rare

appearances in an Essex Pro-Am. In third place on 2 over 72 was Brett Taylor which was enough to edge him ahead in the Essex Order of Merit. The team event went down to the last team on the course and Matt Stables from Rivenhall took the spoils with his team scoring 85 points to win by 1 point from Craig Housden’s team. Newly appointed Essex Captain Chris Cutchie from Colchester Golf Club took third place with his team scoring 82 points.

From Inside the Greenkeepers Shed T

hankfully we are at the back end of winter now which hasn’t been a cold and harsh one however it has been if not more difficult with the mild weather we had in November and December which resulted in severe outbreaks of disease particularly evident on greens and tees. The mild overnight temperatures created the perfect environment for high levels of disease pressure on the putting greens, pathogenic fungi are active in great numbers at this time of year and your Course Manager is constantly watching for signs of Fusarium which attacks all grasses but can have a devastating effect on annual meadow grass (Poa Annua) which is found on most greens. To try and combat this greenstaff will try to keep moisture off the greens via dew brushing first thing in the morning or spray a dew dispersant onto to the grass and allow as much air to flow across and light onto the surfaces as possible. Spring and autumn maintenance is centred around reducing built up organic matter and this is where the spores of the pathogenic fungi reside. If your Course Manager does notice disease developing he has to make a quick decision whether to apply a fungicide and preventing a full blown disease outbreak, it is not a decision he will take lightly as each application cost a great deal of money and budgets are still tight for maintenance across many courses. The mild temperatures have meant greater numbers of golfers on the course however this creates additional wet & worn traffic areas where the grass isn’t growing and unable to recover. Golfers may find roped off areas annoying but the greenstaff at your course are only doing it to protect vulnerable areas from wear and compaction, likewise when the decision is made to take off buggies its purely to protect the course from unnecessary wear and tear. March traditionally sees the start of spring renovations though some clubs may wait till April as they see quicker recovery with higher soil temperatures. We all appreciate that golfers do not like it when the greenkeepers punch lots of holes

into the greens and then cover them with sand making them all bumpy and slow however it is very much a case of short term pain for long term gain when the main competitions begin. Most Course Managers will hollow tine the greens to remove thatch which has accumulated over winter and then fill these holes with sand. So what is thatch and why is it a greenkeepers worst enemy? Thatch is dead fiborous roots from the grass plant that builds up near the rootzone surface. Just as humans shed skin and hair over a lifetime a grass plant will see some older leaves and roots die in what plant scientists call senescence. Thatch acts like a sponge holding water and leaves a surface soft and prone to marking under foot, it is also a nasty breeding ground for grass plant pathogens that can result in fungal disease across the grass sward, therefore good cultural practice is to keep thatch levels below 10% in the top 25mm of rootzone. To keep thatch and organic matter below 10% greenstaff core the greens to remove this thatch and replace it with clean sand which helps surface drainage and is resistant to compaction, it also helps to provide firmer greens. Also at the same time some overseeding may take place, here your greenkeepers are trying to increase the amount of finer grasses in the greens which are far more sustainable and provide a smoother surface. For a short period of time the greenkeepers will raise the height of cut on the greens mowers to give every chance for the seedlings to mature, cutting may periodically be replaced by rolling and this is to help give those seeds every chance of developing otherwise overseeding would be wasting money. Every Course Manager will be working hard to get the greens back to normal playing conditions however we can not control mother nature and this is where we hope winter doesn’t prolong into the early spring months as does you the golfer. MYSTICAL MYTHS I

have been writing a series of articles in Lady Golfer Magazine based on the many “myths” or “chinese whispers” which can easily spread around the clubhouse. This month I would like to cover one I often hear relating to the address position ...

There are many articles written on the most ideal postural position, which this is not. As a Plane Truth Certified Instructor I do not have a specific preference but my selection is based upon the clients swing faults presented during their lesson to improve their ball striking. As coaches we have a duty of care, to ensure the longevity of our clients playing with pain free golfing enjoyment. Image 1 demonstrates a posture with the “bottom” stuck out creating what I call a ski slope effect. This position over a prolonged period of time can cause back issues and from a golfing perspective reduces the ability to make an efficient backswing movement. An easier way to think about the posture irrespective of the degree of forward flexion is to

1

Too much lower back arch.

E: SarahBennettGolf@GMail.com

“tilt the hips” or “bend from the hips” this will negate the degree of lower back or lumbar curvature. Image 2 shows a more “neutral” looking spine with less pressure exerted on the lumbar region and beyond. It is sometimes difficult to see the degree of lumbar curvature during the winter months due to the layers of clothing! So check your postural position wearing a t-shirt which is easily identifiable by the player looking in a mirror or a static photo. Learn to be kind to your back and your golf freeing ourselves from pain and tension. Happy Golfing Sarah

O

n Tuesday 2nd February, an Ambassador and Patron of J’s Hospice, Andrea, was invited to collect a cheque for £3,300, the proceeds of the Burnham on Crouch Golf Club Captain’s Charity for 2016. The cheque was presented by last year’s club Captain Roger Miles and Lady Captain Jane Hull and also present were this year's Club Captain David Elphinstone and Lady Captain, Mel Lewis, along with several lady members. Andrea spoke movingly on behalf of J’s, and read a letter from a grateful family, to highlight the work done by J’s for the patient, who is aged between 18 and 40, and their families. J’s Hospice is based in Chelmsford. Andrea then presented a

Certificate of thanks, which states that the sum raised is able to provide care for a day. Jane and Roger thanked all members for their generosity last year, in enabling this to happen.

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Pheasant Plucker Golf Society’s Captain Alf Smith presented a cheque to the value of £2472.00 to Mussara Gray who is Community Fundraiser for the Alzheimers Society covering Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. The Pheasant Pluckers have been in existence since 1990 and meet every Wednesday throughout the summer months – their principle is that they enjoy their golf and each other’s company and are aware of

the needs of others and raise funds for their Captain's nominated charity - pictured to the left of Mussara is Richard Borstel who is Captain for 2017 - Richard will be raising funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind.BGF was established in 2011 by five of the UK’s largest banks – Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Royal Bank of Scotland and Standard Chartered – with a £2.5 billion fund to invest in businesses with the potential for high growth.

Ballards Gore - Sunday 12th February

A

freezing cold day in Costa del Essex was the setting for February’s Jäger event. Zero temporary greens and only 1 tee matt in sight – very impressive, considered it snowed and hammered it down the day/night before. The breakfast was on point and the service was possibly the best of the year so far! Ballards Gore was great. To the golf – We were live on Instagram for the first tee, it was nearest the pin - the fame got to absolutely everyone as only 2 people hit the target and one was a daisy cutter from Dan Pow who ended up with the prize. - 44 -

Our president Kiki(19) took home the gold, once again being branded the super bandit with 41 points, but some cracking performances by Taz(25) 39 pts, Ricky T (26) 37pts and Bubble(15) trying to stay under the radar with 37pts – all of course being cut to shreds. Funnies from the day – the only man to ever hit a shot backwards, Charlie Mac with the 2yard hybrid. Phillis turned up sober for once, however didn't stop moaning all day and Dave Parris hitting a PGA ball so hard it cracked in half and then a worm came out ... seriously ... we have a photo.

THE NEW PRESIDENT

Roger Walmsley (2017 – 2018 County President) & Jay Beisser (2017 County Captain).

On 2nd February at the Essex Golf Union AGM, held at Upminster Golf Club, Roger Walmsley was elected as the new President for 2017 and 2018. Roger commenced his golfing career in Essex joining Ilford Golf Club in 1951. In 1959 he began his long association with the County Union, taking on the role of Secretary of the Essex Under 25’s team. He continued with the County in various roles such as course assessor and category 1 handicaps advisor. During this time he managed to improve his own play, reducing his handicap to 1 and playing for the Essex County side on a few occasions. From 1975 to 1989 he was working abroad in the USA, but continued his interest in golf and during this period was introduced to the “slope” system. Having returned to Essex he joined Upminster Golf Club and after taking early retirement he rejoined the Essex Golf Union in 1998. He worked with the under 18’s who during this time won the National Under 18’s Team Championship. He later went on to spend some time in the role of “Regional Manager” for England Golf and was fortunate to see the likes of Oliver Fisher,Tom Lewis,Tommy Fleetwood, Danny Brooks and Eddy Pepperell come through the ranks as young England players. - 45 -

All-New Cleveland Golf Wedge Analyser for ShortGame Perfection

F

ocused on Where Scoring Matters for more than 35 years, Cleveland Golf, the global leaders in wedge innovation are dedicated to creating game-changing products that help golfers shoot lower scores and get more enjoyment out of the game. This relentless pursuit of perfection has seen Cleveland Golf continue to maintain its position as a true innovator in short-game performance over the years, with its latest Cleveland Golf ‘Wedge Analyser’ showcasing a whole new way to get fit for wedges.

Having mustered over 350 Tour victories since 1989, Cleveland Golf understand that getting custom- fit for the correct short-game specifications is paramount to shooting the lowest scores possible. Cleveland Golf also understand that in the past, custom fitting has been regarded a time-consuming process. However with the all-new Wedge Analyser powered by Swingbyte, time consuming fitting processes will no longer be an issue. Using the Wedge Analyser, golfers are now able to get custom-fit for the precise wedge bounce and sole grind that suit their game, in as little as two golf swings. Cleveland Golf ’s expert R&D team have incorporated some of their most advanced, highperformance technologies into the Wedge Analyser, including the ability to capture every aspect of a golfers swing using a Swingbyte 2 sensor. The intuitive system, most importantly, focuses on the delivery of the club to the ball just before impact. Using key metrics such as attack angle and shaft lean at impact, the Wedge Analyser then recommends the optimal bounce and sole grind configuration for various turf conditions. Fully integrated software also includes database information on pitching wedge lofts to help determine the correct lofts throughout a wedge set for consistency in gapping. Available in-stores around the UK & Ireland from March 1st, The Wedge Analyser offers ease and convenience in abundance, plus the adage that you can now be fit for a wedge in any location. Custom fitting no longer has to take place on a golf course or driving range. It also works differently and proves more beneficial than using a launch monitor. The focus is solely on the club itself, measuring the delivery of the wedge right at impact (before it interacts with the ground). Dean Cracknell, UK Marketing Manager of Srixon/Cleveland Golf commented on the necessity of being fitted using the Wedge Analyser: “All golfers know that getting custom fitted correctly for the right wedges is one of the most important decisions a golfer can make. The Wedge Analyser is an unbelievably simple piece of equipment to use that offers precise results that will in-turn, help golfers improve in the most important area of the game.Visiting your local Cleveland Golf stockist and getting fitted correctly using the Wedge Analsyer will become a nobrainer.” Cleveland Golf and their on-tour ambassador’s including Graeme McDowell, Shane Lowry and Hideki Matsuyama understand that to score better from 125 yards and in, you need to be custom fitted correctly. With the Wedge Analyser this process has just become a lot more precise and convenient for everyone involved. - 50 -

PowaKaddy Launches Stunning New Cart Bag Range for 2017

PING launches new Sigma G putter range

A

host of stunning new colours and designs have been added to PowaKaddy’s popular cart bag range for 2017, with all models available from March. Taking inspiration from new fashion trends from across the world, the game’s No.1 electric trolley brand has added several colours to its cart bag line-up, including Lime Green, Teal and Fuchsia. After a successful introduction to the market last year, the waterproof Dri Edition adds a third model to its stable, whilst the Premium, Deluxe and Lite bags all continue in the new range for 2017. “The response we’ve had from retail partners and consumers on our bags over the past year has been terrific and, after much research and development, we’re looking forward to introducing our most visuallystriking bag range to date,” said Marketing Manager Mei Tierney. “With four models in the new PowaKaddy range, and a wide range of colour options and styles, there’s a bag for every type of golfer.” Constructed from a 2000mm-coated waterproof fabric and weighing just 2.3kg, the new Dri Edition comes in White/Grey/Blue, Black/Yellow and White/Grey/Red options. Incorporating covered zip holders and heat-welded seams, golfers can be assured their equipment and belongings will stay completely dry during heavy rainfall. PowaKaddy has introduced three brand new stylings on its best-selling Premium cart bag: Black/Yellow, Black/Red and White/Lime. multi-piece face technology inspired by the soles of athletic shoes and advancements to PING’s patented True Roll Face Technology have led to significant improvements in feel and overall putting performance in the distinctive new PING Sigma G putter models. “The Sigma G putters represent an exciting new technology that continues our long-standing commitment to engineering putters that feel and look great but perform even better,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “The combination of the high-grade elastomer and fully machined aerospacegrade aluminium over the entire face delivers an amazing feel and sound. And with improved ball-speed consistency and forgiveness, golfers will make more putts than ever. We’re also introducing several new designs that offer a variety of looks to fit every golfer’s stroke and eye.” The Pebax elastomer, a material commonly used in the soles of athletic shoes for its elasticity properties, is a lightweight, high-energy return compound that delivers a uniquely soft yet responsive feel. The new True Roll Face Technology covers the entire face to provide confidence and full-face forgiveness. Precision milled from 6061 aerospace-grade aluminium, the new pattern varies in depth and pitch to improve performance and touch on putts of every length. In player testing, data showed an overwhelming preference for the feel and performance of the Sigma G models and the innovative face technology. Impact stability in every Sigma G model is increased as a result of the larger face insert cavities that allow weight savings to be re-distributed further towards the perimeter to increase the MOI. Optimally placed CG positions help reduce skid and initiate forward roll. The 16 options are finished in either Platinum or Black Nickel and feature a contrasting face tone to assist in setup and alignment consistency. A variety of blades, mid-mallets and mallets are available to fit any stroke type and preferred look and alignment style. Proven performers like the Anser, B60, Kushin, Darby, Shea H, D66, Tess and Piper 3 have been modernised and are joined by several new highperformance designs, including three versions of the Kinloch design, the Ketsch B and three extremely highMOI, alignment models: Tyne, Wolverine T and the counter-balanced Doon. Two options of the proprietary PING Pistol tapered grip are offered to fit a golfer’s preferred grip style. The PP60 (midsize, polygon shape) and PP62 (oversize, more rounded shape) are engineered to fit the contours of the golfer’s hands. The CB60 grip is standard on counterbalanced models.

is Back in Essex – and this year it’s going on tour.

E

ssex pioneered Girls Golf Rocks, now a national campaign to attract more girl golfers. Run by England Golf and the Golf Foundation, it encourages newcomers to have fun, learn a new sport and play alongside friends. This year, we will again break new ground by involving a series of five golf days run by Essex Ladies County Golf Association between April and October to encourage beginners and improvers to play more often. The Tour days will run alongside the successful formula of attracting new players by offering FREE taster sessions for girls, follow-up coaching courses with PGA professionals – and the all -important support of Ambassadors from the girls’ county squads. This year’s taster sessions will take place after school or at the weekend at 7 venues around the county between 18th and 23rd April. So, whether your daughter or grand-daughter has played a little, or never played, they will all be welcome. To book or for more information: Visit www.getintogolf.org/GGR

(click on Essex and search your preferred location) or contact the PGA Pro directly see contact information on the page opposite. Following the tasters, the girls will be invited to take part in a 6 week great value coaching course with PGA professionals at their GGR host club, when the Ambassadors will be on hand again to encourage the newcomers. All the girls taking part in the initial coaching course will receive a custom fitted US Kids 7-iron to help them start playing. Last year in Essex it was hugely successful with almost 70 girls attending the tasters and taking coaching courses.
