L
ily May Humphries, the super-talented 15year-old member of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, has wowed the judges of the 2018 England Golf Awards with her 7 incredible international tournament wins over the past 12 months, and earned her title as winner of their Rising Star Award. The announcement was made last night at the glittering England Golf Awards Dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. The young Essex golfer had been recognised alongside some of the biggest names in the game – including Race to Dubai and European Tour winner, Tommy Fleetwood, and European
2017 ACHIEVEMENTS FOR LILY MAY:
amateur champion, The Open silver medallist and Walker Cup player, Alfie Plant, as well as the England Women’s Team who won the European Team Championship for the 2nd year running. The award has been selected by the judging panel from a record-breaking entry which shines the spotlight on fantastic achievements in golf in England by volunteers, coaches, clubs and counties. Lily May was thrilled to receive the award; ‘It’s been an incredible year and to be recognised in this way is very special. I’ve had such amazing support from my family and the coaching team at Stoke by Nayland and I really hope I can continue my good form through 2018. I was thrilled to win in my first event in the US in Florida last December and if seleceted I can’t wait to go back to the USA this year with the Curtis Cup team.’ Her coach Roly Hitchcock, Head Pro at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, stated: ‘Lily May’s progress this year is indicative of the hard work and dedication she has shown. Twinned with her natural ability, I am sure Lily May can build on her success of 2017 and I am delighted her achievements have been recognised in this way’ She was also a finalist in the Performance of the Year awards alongside the eventual winner of the award Tommy Fleetwood, 2017 Race to Dubai title holder, as well as two European Tour victories; England women’s team; winners of the European team championship for the second year in a row; Alfie Plant of Sundridge Park Golf Club, Kent; European amateur champion, silver medallist at The Open and a Walker Cup player. England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink said: “We were thrilled by the number and quality of nominations we received and delighted that so many people are helping us to tell golf ’s great stories to the wider community. www.stokebynayland.com

Charity Golf Day EDITOR Paul Haddow
Our Golf Day is once again at the beautiful Thorndon Park Golf Club. Thorndon is the No 1 golf course in Essex and is presently undergoing a major face-lift with some bunkers being repositioned and redone, and thinning of the trees on the course to provide more light and air.

By May the results of all the work will have created an even nicer course. Over the past 30 years, by organising an Annual Charity Golf Day, The Rotary Club of Brentwood (registered charity no 1061479) has raised over £100,000 in aid of many charities. This year the main charity we are supporting is the charity SNAP. SNAP (Special Needs And Parents) is a registered charity that helps Essex families with children and young people who have any special need or disability. Come and join us on Friday, May 25th. This is your chance to enjoy playing at Thorndon Park Golf Club in Teams of 4.

Dogged Start to Lizzie’s Year!
Lizzie Johnson drive-in.
A
chant of “Who Let the Dogs Out – Woof, Woof ” went up as Newton Green’s new ladies’ captain sent her drive-in tee shot 133 yards down the first fairway. Lizzie Johnson has a pet, a Flat Coated Retriever she walks when not striding the fairways of her golf club. In a morning themed round of Pets Are Us, many of her fellow members wore animal costumes, and vice-captain Cate Fraser appeared as cartoon character Deputy Dog. In very cold and bitter weather, 50 ladies showed dogged determination as they set out on a 10-hole Delaney scramble competition, which had been preceded by Lizzie witnessing retiring captain Rebecca Evans putting out on the 18th green to complete her season. Competition winners: 35 Gwyneth Ferriera, Sue Thurgate, Carol Durston and Elizabeth Underwood, 35.5 Pam Guilbert, Sally Cade, Jill Symon and Maggie Manby. -8-

Have Your Best Season Ever! W
ith the 2018 golf season about to start, why not make it your most success one ever! Perhaps you may think, ‘Easier said than done’, but with a few good quality questions that you can ask of yourself, there is absolutely no reason why this year could be your best year ever! Firstly what is success to you? Clearly that’s a question that will differ for many people, however, how would YOU define success? Examples could be playing regularly to your handicap? Reducing your handicap? Winning a tournament or simply gaining more enjoyment from the game!
Next, look at your whole golfing environment and consider how you can improve it? Areas to be considered could include the following; Technique - with your PGA Professional look at your swing right through to your short game and identify areas to improve. Focus more on your pitching wedge distance and closer. Perhaps even strive to become better at those ‘half shots’ when we feel we are ‘in-between clubs’? You will save more shots in this area and significant improvement can come very quickly. Equipment - make sure your gear fits you! Ensure you have only clubs in the bag that you hit consistently well. Lofted fairway clubs such as 7 woods and hybrids will make your second shots far more successful. Organised - plan your season. Look at the competition dates, society days, golf trips etc. and get them in the diary. Those playing in teams, try to factor-in practice rounds at courses you are not
familiar with. Mind-Set - when playing golf this is the most important factor! All the preparation is done, it’s time to deliver! If you have followed The Mind Zone in the Essex Golfer or have attended Mind Zone sessions you will have some useful tools to help your performance. Examples being; the ReSet Six, the Three Phases (pre-shot, shot and postshot), Focus & Attention and the Shot Process. In order to perform consistently it is essential that you have a process/routine for your golf shot. This must be trusted and used for each and every shot you play from a drive to a 3ft putt. It is possible that you may hit a less than perfect shot on the course… and if so, it is also key is not to ‘sway’ from your process. Trust your process as that is where you need it the most and watch those poor shots diminish and those great shots become far more regular. Develop your ‘process’ with your PGA Professional or with us at The Mind Zone. Working on these areas is a sure way to improve your golf this year. Although an old cliche it’s one of the best… ‘You must play one shot at a time and focus your attention on only that’. Society today is so fast paced and results oriented it’s hard to ‘stay in the moment’ and focus on what you are doing - bad news for playing good golf! When on the course try to ‘get lost in the process’ of your shot, thinking constructive thoughts rather than thinking about the result. We never add up the score during the round, but simply go through the process… once you are in the moment of enjoying good golf, you’ll find that the scores actually take care of themselves. So follow these steps, being organised and prepared will lead to a calmer, quieter mind allowing you to play your best golf yet! Wishing you an enjoyable and successful 2018 and please drop us a line telling us of your success. If you’d like more information on what The Mind Zone can do for your game or indeed your Club, simply get in contact with us now, via our website.

DEVELOP YOUR GAME ON THE COURSE W
e all know we have to practice to get rid of the winter rust. Off course hitting shots on the range is part of doing that but don’t neglect getting on the course to sharpen up the game as well. Please respect the course and ensure you are not holding anyone up. The reason you have to is that golf is a game of variability where no two shots are the same, so we have to learn to deal with that if we are to make the best our our rounds. Also, if you think of it golf is probably the only sport where we train in a different environment, the range, to where we play so it makes sense to do some training out on the course. Here are some ideas. n Play a few holes instead of heading to the range - You can get out for 4 holes or 9 holes if you can. n Play best ball - This is a great game to learn to deal with different situations. The rules are you can hit another shot if you it a bad one. If you do try to learn from it and make a few adjustments. You will identify some shots you have trouble with and learn what adjsutments you need to make. n Put yourself in some funny spots - We all like to think we willl hit it straight everytime but in reality we will face a lot of differnent situations. Get imaginitive and have fun trying out some different shots. - 12 -

Bentley Golf Club Refurbishment on Track B
entley Golf Club is on track to achieve one of its key building milestones. Building work continues to progress well with the major fittings to the Lounge area completed. The Lounge with its extended footprint is now open to Bentley Golfers and the community as a whole for functions. Along with the Lounge the main Restrooms have had a major makeover. Bentley will shortly be taking delivery of a suite of new furniture giving it a modern look and feel. Roy Manning House Director said the changes have been eye catching and we have noticed an increase in our current members using the facilities.
We have also taken the opportunity to refurbish the pro Shop. Mark Gallop Club Secretary said ‘One advantage of a being a members club is that we can invest the money we make straight back into our facilities, very soon Bentley will have a Clubhouse that will naturally sit alongside a fantastic Golf Course. We have already seen an increase in our membership since the building work started and look forward to seeing more of our current members enjoying the club and hopefully welcoming a few more new Members’ Anyone interested in finding out more or joining Bentley Golf Club can contact Mark Gallop on 01277 373179 or Email secretary@bentleygolfclub.com
Work is now focused on the upgrade to the Spike Bar which over the years was looking tired and dated. The Spike Bar will undergo a complete refurbishment and will be carried out to the same high standard as the Lounge. In conjunction with the internal work there has been substantial work carried out on the creation of a new Patio area. - 14 -

He pretended to be Jordan Speith! Now by copying what he imagined to be viewing, the results suddenly changed. I got Paul to do this exercise by viewing around Jordan whilst he was imagining his Putting Stroke, then to imagine he was copying this action. The best thing to do is firstly do this exercise without a putter as you are focusing on movement, then introduce the Putter and then introduce the Picture of myself with Karl. In April last year, I had suspected Prostate Cancer, which fortunately was negative, so grew beard for Prostate Cancer Awareness in November and ball. O
ver the next few months I’m going to be writing some articles on junior golf and what I’ve learned in the last 25+ years through my own coaching experiences. I’ll share my views on a variety of topics such as coaching, competitions, practicing, time involved, mentoring, strength and conditioning, equipment and others that will hopefully help to guide you either as the parent or child to give you more success. It’s something I’m extremely passionate about and through my own experiences I know there’s many pathways you can take both good and bad.
JUNIOR PATHWAY T
he natural pathway for juniors once they’ve started is to join a club and represent that club then be part of the county set up. Then progress to the national regional areas, then hopefully play for their country, represent GB&I, turn pro, go on tour, win the Open, job done! If you believe that is the only way to succeed then please read on as this may be of interest to you. Through my own research in the last 25 years only half of the players that played in a Walker Cup side have played on tour! Think about it, there are so many factors that mean every pathway is different. When you start playing golf, your size, access to golf club, competition from other juniors, growth, finance, school, personal life, the list goes on. I turned pro at 17 which really was to young, my parents couldn’t afford the amateur competitions so we took the decision that I’d get a career behind me with the PGA. Whilst my dream didn’t materialise to play in the Ryder cup
I gained a career which I love. Two people that chose the same pathway are Ian Poulter and Simon Khan ... the decision was the right one! My point is that circumstance dictates the pathway so get sound advice and try and get a team behind you that will be part of the journey and understand your circumstance and goals so they can create the right pathway.Yes I have players that would love to play on tour but I also have players that want to go to college in America or also caddy on tour so it’s my job to help create the pathway. Some may even play golf as it helps them at work. That’s great as the game has many avenues and great values. One of the best feelings in coaching is to get the call from a parent or child to say what their child has achieved whether it’s they’ve qualified for the Ricoh Open championship as Charlotte Thompson did or winning the monthly medal.Whether they do well or not the proudest part is being there for them and being part of their pathway.

laygolf Seniors played a Stableford competition, run as a non-qualifier with a large amount of entries. Will Elder (13) took first place in division one with 34 points from Peter Saye (15) on 30 points and third Jeff Coles(16) on 29 points. Division two was won by newcomer Shaun Evans (24) with 33 points followed by Senior Captain, Steve Dale (24) in second on 32 points and Robert Few (25) in third on 31 points. Will Elder and Trevor Cocksedge received a sleeve of balls each for achieving par-three birdies.
ifficult weather conditions didn’t prevent a reasonably large number taking to the course in the Ladies February Stableford competition. Jeanette Shea took top spot on countback from Gina Macmillan in Division one with both carding 30 points. Linda Smith was just one point off the pace on 29 points. Division two also required countback to separate first and second places with Linda Marshall taking first place from and Pauline Jordan after each carded 25 points. Emma Rowe took third place, one adrift, on 24 points. The pairing of Ann Longman and Nicky Withycombe progressed to round two of the Daily Mail Foursomes after a very tough home match against Clacton’s Laura Forder and Kath Sinnot. Having to give away 10 shots the Playgolf team won the day at the 19th hole (drinking them under the table).

Indoor Putting Station
2
B
rrr! Its freezing outside, but I can still spend some time working on my putting indoors and here is a really good way to do it. Firstly, place two clubs parallel to each other slightly wider than the width of the putter head. Next place another club at the front, with the narrow part of the shaft at the end of the two clubs and lastly place a cushion against the wall at the end. This can be seen in picture one. Place the balls at the front of the station as I am doing in Picture 2 and roll them into the cushion. The object being that since you swing the putter up and down a straight line, you strike the ball slightly on the upswing which is necessary to clear the front club. What I like about this practice station is it provides you with lots of square lines so its easy to check your set up and ball position and as mentioned encourage an upward hit on the ball. Also furthermore, it overcomes the main problem of carpets in that they tend to roll much quicker than the greens so hitting into the cushion you only have to focus on your stroke. Hopefully, it warms up by next
1
month, and we can talk about the speed the ball ideally rolls into the hole. It’s not too late to join me at El Rompido in the spring 5th to the 12th of May give me a call on 07801 428 174 for more details. Great Start To The Year For Masud
A
rian Masud started his golfing year with a win at Colchester Golf Club Walk-On Stableford. Masud, one of Colchester many improving juniors, had obviously used the half-term break well and recorded a solid 36 points from his eight handicap and cleared the chasing pack by two points. With doubles at the ninth and thirteenth he could have easily improved his round, but he did finish with a birdie on the eighteenth, which is a feather in anyone’s cap at Colchester. Second spot went to another eight handicapper, Keith Jacobs, who returned a credible 34 on a course playing long after all the wet weather. Richard Hayes (12) was hard on his heels with a 33 and fourth spot went to Peter
Clarke (18) with 32 points. Behind the apparent inactivity at Colchester over the past few weeks, the knockout stages of the winter leagues have been beavering away. The competition is now in its semi-final stage. With three of the four semi-finalists know Martin Hall, and Danny Simmons are drawn against Lewis Barber and James Angel. Simon Rippingale and Mike Mays are the third known semi-finalists. Rippingale and Mays won the competition back in 1990 a feat, they are trying to repeat their opponents will be either Glenn Sibbons and Paul Jackson or Ben and Joe Williams, champions in 2015 and 2016, whose quarter-final will be played before the week is out.

anons Brook Golf Club are very proud of all their junior members and the latest young golfer to join the club in Harlow is no exception. Sophia Fullbrook who lives in St. Albans won the U12 European championships in 2017, at the event held in Scotland where over 630 children from 52 nations play in competitions across all ages. Sophia has followed her coach and new head golf professional James Blake to Canons Brook from Redbourn golf club in Hertfordshire, where James has been teaching Sophia since the age of five. James says “She is a great girl and an amazing golfer to work with. She is very competitive and focused when she plays and has lots of fun with her friends when at the golf club practicing. On
only the third time of her playing Canons Brook she nearly had a hole in one by hitting the flag from 140 yards away on our par 3, 7th hole.” If you have a child that would like to give golf a try, James runs group lessons on Saturdays at Canons Brook and evening lessons at Totally Golf store in Templefields, Harlow on their state of the art indoor golf simulators. GOLF TIPS FOR AROUND THE COURSE As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easy-to-understand. Thanks to the structure with sections from tee to green, golfers can find the information they need in an instant. A quick fix guide for eliminating mistakes makes the practical ring-bound water-repellent booklet the ideal accompaniment on the course.
The tips are based on many years of competition experience by leading golf professionals. We’d be willing to bet that “Golf Trouble Shots and Quick Fix Guide” will help you save a number of strokes on your next round.

England Golf Partners Topgolf to Grow the Game E
ngland Golf has announced its partnership with global sports entertainment leader Topgolf in a bid to grow the game of golf. The two organisations plan to work together and learn from each other to attract more people into golf, to improve the image of the game and to make the sport more inclusive and accessible. The partnership will also be an opportunity to swap information, test new ideas and to learn from each other. The Topgolf formula has proved hugely successful and aims to put the fun into the golf range experience. With target games for all – golfers and non-golfers alike – and a good time which includes music, food and drink, Topgolf attracted an average of just over 30,000 daily visits globally in 2017. Abbie Lench, England Golf ’s Head of Club Support, commented: “We’ve got a lot to learn
from Topgolf about introducing people to golf by providing what the customers want and giving them a great experience. “That knowledge will help us to give even better support to our clubs and supplement our advice on understanding the market and creating centres which are customer friendly.” Claire Kendrick, Head of Marketing at Topgolf UK said: “We are thrilled to be teaming up with such a prestigious group as England Golf and to work together to make the game more accessible for everyone. As a brand, Topgolf is constantly looking for ways to grow the game of golf and to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get involved.” Topgolf has three centres in England, at Chigwell in Essex, Watford in Hertfordshire and Addlestone, Surrey.

THE WAR ON DISTANCE A Ground Or Air Offensive?
S
o another year and another offering of equipment based solely around distance. Can this years driver go 15 yards further than last years? I don’t think so, in fact I worked it out the other day that if I had hit the ball 15 yards further year on year for all the years I have played golf my average drive would now be 645 yards – not bad! If you look at mainstream golf equipment there is a reason that golfers are drawn to certain brands, distance (marketing) and quite often the Professional Players that play that brand. But, professional endorsement does not come cheap so in reality it’s the club golfer that is paying the big bucks to a player who is ultimately going to persuade you to buy more product – nut’s really. So, in my opinion the golf industry runs most of the time on a golfer’s inefficiency – the reason you can always hit the ball that bit further is that very seldom does a golfer ‘max out’ what they have. This is not always just technique related, it can be ball flight or the club itself but as an example if your golf course has elevated tees you may be better of hitting the ball a little lower to get a flatter landing angle, in turn giving you more roll. This leads on to an interesting point – a golf shot has two elements ... carry and roll. Time in the air and time on the ground is balanced to optimise distance. So, your ball flight needs to suit
the golf course you play and your swing type. Obviously, most golfers will play at different courses from time to time but generally we have one course where we play our competition golf or visit more often, it would make sense to optimise our game for where we play most. If you punch into Google ‘How to hit my driver further’ somewhere in there you will find ‘High Launch, Low Spin’ but for many golfers this is unrealistic due to their swing type. If you want to find the Google culprits look on driving ranges, they will be the ones leaning back as far back as they can and throwing themselves backwards every drive they hit ... not the best idea to be honest. So, here’s a thought: Swing type = Driver type = Optimum ball flight = Maximum distance With this on mind I will holding a seminar on 20th March that will look into this exact subject in more detail. I will discuss swing types, drivers and shafts and the red flags to look for in your own game so you can get more distance. I am also delighted to announce that European Tour Professional Robert Coles will be joining my team this year and will be sharing some insights on how you can play your best golf. Tickets are £10 and are available through my website: www.leeportergolf.com.

Š TRIS TAN JO NES
ere’s the story of Charlotte Thompson over the few months since she won her place back on the Ladies European Tour by securing a top 5 finish on the Ladies European Tour Access Series last season. When Charlotte secured her card for the Ladies European Tour she was full of excitement and looking forward to the challenge ahead. At the start of 2018 Charlotte was pleased to announce her new attatchment for the fore coming future at Stoke by Nayland golf hotel and spa, the place she will call her golfing home. With this sorted her attentions were then directed to planning the start of the year with maybe some warm weather training. When the 2018 LET schedule was released it revealed that the first few tournaments were being played in Australia from Mid January to early March with also the opportunity to join the Australian Ladies Tour and play in some extra pro ams through this time. All the entrants have to fund their own flights, accommodation and costs for the tour and it looked at one stage that this would prohibit her from taking place. Thankfully Martin Weaire of Associated Security Solutions kindly offered to help with her flights and some expenses for the trip, in return for some future appearances at their corporate golf days. With the flights, some expenses and clothing sorted (thank you to Swing Out Sister Ladies Golf Clothing) Charlotte was booked and ready to head over to make the long trip to the other side of the world.
© T RISTA N JO NES
Charlotte started the first tournament a little rocky as expected after not competing since October, but worked hard on her game and the specific areas that showed up that needed improving. In the ActewAGL Canberra Classic Charlotte made the cut and finished T34 which meant she picked up some points and gained a spot on the Order of Merit. With confidence ever rising the next tournament was the Australian Ladies Classic Bonville in Coffs Harbour and this time the performance was even stronger. A beautiful and challenging golf course was ahead of Charlotte this week, the course was known as Australias Augusta. With extremely grainy greens, tree lined fairways and narrow misses. Charlotte played two solid rounds to make the cut on 2 over in 32nd place. Ready to try and make her way up the leaderboard over the weekend. In the third round she posted a 2 under par which pulled her score to level par overall and into T13th place. The final round draw was announced and Charlotte was excited, if not a little nervous, to find that her three ball was made up of none other than Dame Laura Davis (her idol) and Caroline Hedwall (who has represented Europe in the Solheim Cup three times). She powered through the last day refusing to let nerves get to her and was one under coming into the last hole, then eagled the par 5 18th to finish on 3 under for the day and -3 total overall, which put her in a wonderful T9th place. An experience and memory Charlotte will never forget. This is her first top 10 finish on the Ladies European Tour and has moved her up in 35th place on the Order of Merit at this early
stage of the season. The next challenge will be the last of the events on the LET in Australia The NSW Women’s Open in Coffs Harbour, let’s hope it’s onwards and upwards from here. Charlotte is very grateful to Martin as this has given her a great start to her 2018 season and a boost in confidence playing alongside some of the golfing greats. She is still looking for sponsorship for future events in the 2018 season.

GOLF ETIQUETTE Some people may be asking, “Why would I need a book about correct conduct? I know how to behave myself.” Although integrity and fairness are an excellent basis, good manners alone are not enough in golf. A certain amount of specific knowledge is essential, especially in the light of the dangers involved in sport. Furthermore, golf also involves social conventions that are not based directly on accepted behaviour patterns. The etiquette is just as important as the rules of play and it ensures that all players can enjoy their game as much as possible.
This book does not claim to cover every single issue but it does contain everything you need to know in order to be welcomed at virtually every course in the world. However, please bear in mind that the etiquette may very slightly from club to club. Therefore find out about the Local Rules in advance, follow all the instructions and heed the information on the notice boards. You will then be a welcome guest and playing partner on any course – irrespective of your ability level.

COUNT T
his article was prompted by a recent visit to a driving range which is blessed both with pros and cons. However, the biggest disadvantage of range work is the ease of hitting a large quantity of balls with no specific consequence or pressurised outcome. You may have heard of the “Golden Shot” when practicing this refers to the ball at which you finish your practice session. This shot is linked to providing you with the confidence for either your next range session or for your next game with your friends. My question to you is “Did that last shot really mean something?” the background image is one I see quite often at a range. - 38 -
Has the player ran out of time, or has the frustration set in that the player has left the range in disgust? these could be two explanations. However, I think one more likely reason is the “Golden shot” which was the previous ball hit ... I strongly believe the balls which really count are the last three in this instance, so set your self a real pressurised challenge such as a narrow target re-creating a certain tee shot which causes problems at your home course. If you cool down using the last few balls with wedges select a distance marker which maybe an uncommonly practiced yardage such as 40 or 60 yards placing pressure to play the distance. “Let’s become comfortable by playing the uncomfortable shots” Happy Golfing Everyone. he PGA in Essex returned to the excellent Suffolk course for its first Pro-Am of 2018 and the full field indicated the popularity of the venue. The weather was damp with a very cold wind making scoring difficult and this was shown in the number of Professionals scoring under par. The clear winner was Lloyd Kennedy from Chelmsford Golf Club with an excellent round of 68 and enough to win by 2 shots from Jason Levermore from Little Channels. In third place on 2 over 72 was Craig Housden also from Little Channels. The team event was won for the third consecutive year by Matt Stables and his team who recorded an exceptional score of 84 stableford points. The teams with Lloyd Kennedy and Craig Housden both scored 79 points with Kennedy’s team winning on countback.
he PGA in Essex made its regular trip to Orsett Golf Club for the annual better ball competition. The event has 3 categories comprising two professionals, two amateurs and a professional with an amateur. Despite wintry temperatures and persistent rain, the course was presented, as always, in an excellent condition and this was reflected in the scores. The overall winners, and winners of the professional and amateur category were David Hawkins from Wanstead Golf Club and his amateur partner Kishen Velani, former Essex cricketer. Their score of 44 points was sufficient to win by 3 points from Steve Cipa of South Essex Golf Centre and Eddie Martin and also Nick and John Moncur. The professional pairing competition was won by Jason Levermore from Little Channels and Andy Pestell from Chelmsford Golf Club with 42 points. This was a 2 point win over the pairings of Mark Talbott and Joe Ellis from Thorpe Hall Golf Club and Michael Vandenberg and Fred Harrington from Rochford Golf Club.

The winning amateur pair were Malcolm Prior from Thorndon Park Golf Club and Colin Reynolds from Burnham on Crouch Golf Club.

Magnificent Romford
A
proud day for Romford Golf Club on Sunday 25th February 2018, last year’s Captain Michael Miles had the privilege of handing over his charity donations from his captaincy year (2017). Pictured left Sue Ellis from London air ambulance, Michael Miles our Captain of 2017, right Laura Stock from Cancer Research UK. The incredible sum of £14,500 was raised by the members of Romford Golf Club for Michael’s two charities, Cancer Research UK and London Air Ambulance and both charities received £7,250 each. London Air Ambulance
stated “This money raised could potentially save three peoples lives, which is just magnificent and made us at RGC feel extremely proud to have been some help. Each year the newly appointed Captain of Romford Golf Club selects a charity of their choice, this year our Captain John Fuller will be raising money for DT38 Foundation. Dylan Tombides a West Ham player who sadly passed away from testicular cancer. We started this charity off by holding a golf day for our members yesterday too and raised an impressive £700 which is a good start to this years charity”.

uring his year in office, last year’s Five Lakes Golf Club Senior’s Captain, Mick Phillis, nominated The Starlight Children’s Foundation as his Charity. The Charity grants the wishes of seriously and terminally ill children with the aim of lightening their lives at a sad time. These wishes range from being a Princess or a Fireman for the day, to swimming with dolphins, and visiting Mickey Mouse. Starlight has recently arranged for a little Essex boy to meet his favourite American football team, The Seattle Seahawks in Seattle and to be part of their match day at the Century Link Field. With raffles, auctions and a Charity Golf Day at Five Lakes Golf Club, the Section raised a total of

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER

Arron Edwards-Hill Heads to Asia B
orn a few days before the millennium, Arron started playing golf in Scotland at the age of 6 with the “Wee Wonders” and “US Kids Golf ” golf programs. Eventually the family moved to Maldon in Essex and Arron joined Chelmsford GC. In 2014 Arron was selected for Essex Golf Union elite coaching and in 2015 England Golf regional coaching. From the age of 14 Arron has represented the county at each age group and now is a member of the Essex men’s team having turned 18 at the end of last year. In 2015 Arron played a number of England school qualifiers, being the U16 & U18 winner in the Essex competition, runner up in the regional competition and the runner up in the national finals. The reward was a place in the England U18 team to play at Troon against Scotland in September 2015. In 2016 he also represented England Schools against Wales and played in the Faldo series Grand Final at Stoke-by-Nayland. In early 2017 Arron was the runner up in the Essex Amateur Championship as well as winning the Clifford’s trophy at Warley Park, the U18 2017 Faldo Series at Old Ford Manor GC, the South East Group individual at Woodbridge and the Essex Boys Championship at Langdon Hills GC. This great form set up a win in the North of England Open Amateur Youth Golf Championship in early August with rounds of 71, 66 & 66. These are the MacGill Challenge Trophy and The Fairweather Salver (under 18) which Arron is pictured holding at Middlesbrough GC. From here he played in the Romford Trophy in early September securing another win with - 48 -

rounds of 65 and 69. Arron is pictured with this trophy below. In the autumn Arron travelled to Gloria GC Belek, Turkey to play in the men’s M.V.K Turkish Amateur Open; securing 2nd place with rounds of 73, 71, 69, & 69. Then onto the 21st Faldo Grand Final at Al Ain Dubai on the 27th of November where he was 1st in the U18’s category with rounds of 68, 70, & 67 and 3rd Place Overall. Arron is now playing off a playing handicap of +3 and is looking forward to the 12th Asia Faldo Series Grand Final (having qualified in Abu Dhabi) in Vietnam at Da Nang, Laguna Lăng Co Golf Club on the 1st to 3rd March 2018. Arron says of the future: “I will continue to move forward with various competitions at home and abroad until the end of this year. My aim is to play competitions where I can gain World Amateur Ranking Points to help take my golf career onto another level. I am currently ranked at 1187 position. I will work on any weak points I think I may have and continue to strengthen my good points. My future ambitions are to stay focused, be realistic, take on board any help that may be offered, work hard at my game, focusing on my fitness and health as an athlete and enjoy the process of hopefully becoming a pro golfer sometime in the future.” The Essex Golf Union wish Arron every success in the future.

Essex Golf Union Website O
ver the winter period we have been trying to find time to update our website content and improve the overall experience for the user. Regardless of the amount of resources and time we have now reached a stage that we feel is an improvement on where we were last year. A Quick Look: The website is now presented slightly differently with far more submenus being available than ever before. This hopefully means that you will never be more than 2 or 3 clicks from what you are looking for. We have introduced two separate ‘News’ pages which focuses on County News and Information for Clubs, these two locations are accessed through the home menu page under ‘News’. We now also have implemented an archive section to the ‘Results’ page, making past competitions since working with Intelligent Golf available to view as well research data from each individual championship. These pages will become heavily used we suspect as the season unfolds.
The menu heading ‘Juniors’ hosts everything relating to Junior Golf in Essex, from Junior Opens and The Under 14 Community Golf Tour to the Coaching Nominations, Parental Consent Form and the Junior Inter Club Youth Shield Competition. Our website offers the opportunity to enter competitions, view draws and results, download useful information for use at your club and even download useful forms and documents from the ‘Forms’ page. Our County Handbook will be available in the next few weeks and our website is fast becoming the place to get it. Although we have distributed approximately 600 handbooks in recent years to all of our clubs, it would appear that a growing percentage are now downloading the document straight from our website. For all those with smart phones surely appreciate the convenient way in which we can download something from online to me available offline. This is

exactly why our handbook is fast becoming the most visited page on our website found under the ‘Information’ menu. We hope you enjoy getting familiar with our newly structured website and find it easier to use than ever before. It is host to some very useful information for everyone that plays golf in Essex, our Competitors, Team Managers, Junior Organisers delegates and the Clubs themselves. This is just another step in working to support our clubs and their members.

he continued pursuit of breakthrough technology and performance by Titleist golf ball engineers has resulted in the all-new Titleist Tour Soft golf balls, available in golf shops across the UK & Ireland, from February 1st. For golfers demanding improved feel, the invention of Titleist Tour Soft – the softest-feeling golf ball in its category – delivers an allround better performance. New Titleist Tour Soft Technology and Performance: Category-leading soft feel, commanding distance, and excellent short game performance. n The largest Titleist core ever produces categoryleading soft feel and high ball speed for commanding distance. In developing Tour Soft’s core, the Titleist Golf Ball R&D and Operations teams were challenged to surpass previously accepted core size limitations in order to produce a golf ball that feels better and is longer or just as long as the competition. n A new ultra-thin 4CE grafted cover made with TCU Process Technology generates advanced short game control. The LENNY is the bodywarmer version with 3-layer construction in two colour options. The LARRY full-zip Interface-1 ™ jacket in two colour choices combines a soft Polyamide fabric with premium PrimaLoft® padding, matched with a water repellent finish; while the LOGAN full-zip body warmer with a chest pocket provides excellent protection from the elements with similar PrimaLoft® padding in Navy or Black. www.galvingreen.com
