THORPE HALL GOLF CLUB

T

ucked away in the far south east corner of Essex lies one of the countries most famous members golf clubs. It opened in 1907 and is a parkland course measuring only 6,242 yards, but is subject to links course weather conditions due to its proximity to the Thames Estuary, which is only a hundred yards away from its southern most holes. Maybe that is why it boasts so many illustrious golfing members. It was the home to possibly England’s most famous amateur golfer Sir Michael Bonallack who represented the club over the world’s best known golf courses for 30 years. His achievements both on and off the course are legendary, and are displayed prominently in the members lounge. After his successes on the golf course, Sir Michael served as secretary of The Royal and Ancient, the governing body of European Golf from 1983 -99. Following his 16 years as secretary he was succeeded by another Thorpe Hall man Peter Dawson, who occupied the position for another 16 years, retiring in 2015. Sir Michael’s wife and sister were and are still members, both of whom represented England in the Ladies amateur ranks. Moving on to today, Thorpe Hall is the only club in England that boasts two of its members

competing at the highest levels of the game. Richie McEvoy and Matt Southgate both play on the European Tour and are products of the clubs cadet section. Richie is the current Porsche German Open champion and Matt is the first of the clubs professionals to play in the US Open, he also qualified to play in final Race to Dubai tournaments in 2017 and 2018. Both are well into this year’s campaign. Following in their footsteps the club’s ladies section have Darcy Sverdloff starting her career on the ladies professional circuit and young Millie Penfold who last year was in the East Anglia England under 14 squad, she has now moved up to the under 18’s. She was also the cover girl for the 2017 England Golf Annual Review Magazine. So the club marches on with about 600 golfing members and a further 350 social members who can take advantage of all the facilities the club offers, as well as its vibrant social scene. A weekly event is a café style Annie’s Music night when some of Europe’s best known musicians entertain members and guests. Visit www.thorpehallgc.co.uk for more information. -8-

MAGIC IN THE SUN FOR SAM

T

he magical, warming effect of sunshine saw a large field turn out to compete in the Playgolf Colchester February Medal. Receptive greens saw accurate approach play rewarded. But, with the greens in fine fettle, displaying good roll, coupled with some difficult pin positions, accurate putting was required. Sam Southernwood (13) carded nett 69 to win division one, carding 10 pars. Second and third was a three-way countback, with Mehendra Gurung (15) carding the best back nine to take second place from Martin Kilbey (13) in third and Ron Gilzean (15) out of the podium places in fourth. Miguel Ruiz (22) earned a two-shot cut, winning division two with nett 65. Second and third needed countback to decide between second placed Mark Rolfe (22) and third placed Lee Whitten (17) after both carded nett 67.

BRITISH JUNIOR GOLF TOUR aylands Golf Club in Essex will host arguably the most hotly contested event on M the British Junior Golf Tour (BJGT) calendar,

when 120 players tee it up for the IMG Academy Junior World Championships qualifier at the end of March. The winners from every division, ranging from ages 6 & Under up to 15-18, will form the 2019 BJGT Team that will travel to San Diego, California, in July, for this year's tournament. With the 7-8 and 9-10 divisions having been settled already, at Cambridge Meridian GC at the end of 2018, and the youngest age group having their qualifier on the 10th March at Oak Park GC in Surrey, this leaves the 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18 age groups to battle it out in Essex. Saturday 30th March sees the 11-12 Boys plus the 11-12 and 13-14 Girls take to the fairways, while the 13-14 Boys and 15-18 Boys & Girls play the following day, on Sunday 31st March. As always, the event is expected to be a very close affair, with some of the best juniors from around the UK competing for the chance to take on over

1200 players from around the globe in the largest and most prestigious junior golf event in the world. As with all British Junior Golf Tour events, the various divisions all play yardages that suit their ages, meaning that they will all need to go low if they are to progress and then challenge in America. We firmly believe that this is how junior golf should be played: making level par the score to aim at, regardless of how old you are! As the only official qualifying organisation in the UK, the British Junior Golf Tour has been taking players out to the US for the past 13 years, providing incredible experiences for many players over the years. The event was formerly the Callaway Junior World Championship, back when Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els all played, and won, so there is a rich history of quality players gaining valuable experience of competing at the highest level in junior golf. You can view the history and past results of the Junior World Championships at www.juniorworldgolf.com.

JUNIOR TIME AT COLCHESTER GOLF CLUB

ollowing on from the previous years' successful junior group coaching lessons, Joint Head Professional at Colchester Golf Club, Chris Cutchie, is running another series starting in the spring. Every Sunday morning there will be two age groups covering five year olds through to eleven year olds and they will work through all aspects of the game over the duration of the course. The lessons will utilize the new facilities at the Club's 36 acre academy course, practice area and driving range. “Juniors are the way forward for Colchester Golf Club” said Jim Wilkinson the Club Captain, he went on “Over the years we have developed some fantastic young golfers who have represented the Club at all levels, gone on to county honours and a good number have entered the Professional ranks.” Cutchie, who will head up the courses, like Mark Baker the Club’s other professional are both local boys who started their golf as juniors at the Club and developed through the club system.

T

Both are keen to give every opportunity to local girls and boys every chance to take this the first step into a game for life.

These courses are open to all. Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity or would like more information should contact either the office or Chris Cutchie on 01206 853 396 or through professional@colchestergolfclub.com or @cgcproshop.

FEBRUARY FAMILY DAY

welve Golfers braved high winds and freezing temperatures to play in a family day arranged by Sarah Bennett PGA Fellow Head Professional at Three Rivers Golf Club. The “Festive” day was rescheduled due to Sarah’s recent surgery, however so much was the anticipation her young players knew exactly how long Sarah had been away. The format was family foursomes played from a specifically shortened course with an equal split of girls and boys which is encouraging.

“I am seeing an increase in the number of girls who are entering the sport which is encouraging, it is key to deliver coaching and playing opportunities which cover key areas of the child’s development to maintain their interest within golf. I am unsure who was more nervous the parents or the juniors.” The day was won by Jamie and Nigel who were paired with a new player to Sarah’s group and his Grandad but as a result of Sarah’s day they will now start playing together on the course. Sarah is heavily involved with the Junior section at Three Rivers with her popular Saturday junior group coaching and events an attraction to the new and intermediate golfer. She is only one of two PGA Professionals who have the Junior Golf L2 TPI Certification which she upskills on a regular basis. If you are interested in joining Sarah on her Saturday junior group please contact E: sarahbennettgolf@gmail.com M: 07719 617 349 or visit www.sarahbennettgolf.co.uk

WERE YOU AND YOUR GOLF CLUB MADE FOR EACH OTHER?

W

ith spring quickly approaching, golfers around the region are beginning to think about their goals for the season. These wellintentioned targets may include playing more, joining a club, cutting your handicap or improving your swing, but how many have decided to invest in some custom-fitted clubs? Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, home to two Championship golf courses and host venue to PGA European Tour events, is pleased to be offering free custom fitting as a new service for golfers ready for the 2019 season. Keen to dispel common misconceptions associated with custom fitting, Randall Daniels, Retail Manager at the Golf Shop at Stoke by Nayland and a certified Custom Fitter, explains: “A lot of people think custom fitting is too expensive or is only for professionals, but that’s not the case at all. We fit a full range of golfers, from absolute beginners to PGA Pros, as every single golfer can benefit from a custom fitted set of clubs. Plus, our custom fitting service is free of charge – you simply pay for the clubs! “When you buy a club from the rack, which isn’t specifically designed for your height, grip and

swing, then your body has to adapt to correct any problems, creating an uncomfortable swing that affects your ability to improve your game. Custom fitted drivers for example have been shown to increase ball speed, reduce spin rate and increase distance significantly.” Randall and his team employ traditional methods and state-of-the-art technology to design the perfect club for each individual in a process that takes just under an hour. Golfers are required to fill in a short questionnaire and provide a few measurements before their swing is studied using the on-site Foresight GC Quad Golf Simulator and a number of tools that monitor everything from face angle, launch angle, spin rate and ball speed. The team will then use all this information to design a club that will be tailor-made by a manufacturer such as Ping, Titleist, Calloway, Cobra and Mizuno. To find out more or to book a custom fit with Randall please contact the Golf Shop at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa by calling 01206 265806 or email proshop@stokebynayland.com. The Golf Shop is open 7 days a week from 7am – 7pm. - 20 -

GOLF IS STILL NOT A GAME OF PERFECT O

ne of the best books I have read on golf is a book by Bob Rotella called ‘Golf is not a game of perfect’. It is a great title and it reminds us that the nature of golf is that it is a game of misses, managing bad situations and recovering from your bad shots. With modern technology and equipment we can easily be lured into that we can make it perfect and not miss shots. As coaches what we often are trying to do is improve a players bad shots so they aren’t too bad. It is interesting to see that Rory Mcilroy is working with Brad Faxon on his putting and he worked with Bob Rotella for many years himself. Maybe he is reminding him that he needs to play the game and not try to be perfect. He has had a great start to the year and it will be interesting to see how he plays this year.

understand where those destructive shots come from. ENJOY THE CHALLENGE OF THE DAY –

When you are out on the course you need to accept the bad shots and then move on and do the best you can to recover. It is easy to get down but do your best to enjoy the challenge of the next shot. It is ok to hit bad shots just not two in a row.

Try these few ideas for your game TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOUR MISSES ARE AND WHY YOU MAKE THEM –

If you reflect on your shots that caused the most damage is there any pattern to them and do you understand why they happen. This is where a good coach is valuable in helping you to - 22 -

On this particular occasion it wasn’t the normal 3 English blokes messing about but more of a comparison of a newer model car against the older better version. It was blatantly clear that the ‘boys’ preferred the older version due to handling etc etc but it made me think about great golf clubs in the last ten years. When I think back it would be fair to say that pretty much every major manufacturer has made a truly great club within that timescale, not always the most ‘groundbreaking’ but a club that just ‘worked’. Looking back there are some unbelievable clubs that were so far ahead of the competition, some were popular and believe it or not some were actually a bit of a flop because a competitor ‘outmarketed’ them. For me that truly is a great shame but I’m positive the golf industry is not much different to many other industries ... it certainly seems to have similarities to the car industry. So, as I look back I can think of a couple of fantastic drivers, three awesome fairway woods and a handful of great hybrids. Same with irons as

well, in fact there are some irons from the 1980’s that I would happily put up against the latest (as long as the lofts were the same) and feel confident they would hold their own. Then we come to wedges and putters ... sometimes the originals are just perfect and you can’t improve on perfection, there are only so

many times you can ‘rehash’ the same design ... let’s face it, if walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then there’s a fair chance it’s a duck ... even if it does have a different coloured feather. However, please don’t think I am rubbishing new technology - there is some good stuff around, just don’t assume because it’s newer it’s always better. From a fitting perspective I find myself recommending both new and older models ... sometimes you just can’t beat the classics. - 24 -

L

evermore (Little Channels Golf Centre) will be the PGA in England (East) captain for 2019. Levermore, 39, will receive the blazer that marks his year in office at the region’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, February 13. The Essex PGA professional has long been one of the best players in the region, winning the Order of Merit for a fifth time last season. Levermore has a host of other feats to his name, including when he was an unbeaten member of Great Britain and Ireland’s victorious PGA Cup team at CordeValle in 2015. He also fired a hole-in-one at Wentworth in the 2013 BMW PGA Championship, in which he made the

halfway cut. PGA in England (East) regional manager Gordon Campbell said: “Not only is Jason much respected in the region, he is also much liked. “We are delighted that he has accepted the captaincy for 2019 and are sure he will do a fine job representing the region.” Levermore, who turned professional in 1999, is looking forward to his fulfilling the duties of his new role over the coming year. He said: “It is a privilege to have been asked as the region means a lot to me. “It is also an opportunity for me to give a little bit back to the region as I’ve played on it for pretty much the last 20 years. “If there’s an opportunity to make a difference then I will do. I’m only too happy to listen if any of my fellow PGA members have ideas that they believe could improve or help the region. “Hopefully, people see me as an approachable person and will be willing to come forward and speak to me as the year unfolds.” It is set to be a busy year for Levermore – the director of golf at Little Channels – as he has also taken on a committee role for the PGA in Essex.

DYNAMIC DECORATORS GIVE CATE A PAINT-JOB

ynamic decorators turned out in force to give Newton Green Golf Club’s new lady captain Cate Fraser a real paint-job send off. She had recently led a task force to decorate the ladies changing room, and the theme was carried through to her driving off ceremony on the first tee. Numerous members of the ladies section turned up in a motley assortment of overalls, enlivened with paint charts and various

decorating utensils. First, Cate watched retiring captain Lizzie Johnson putt out her season on the 18th green, before turning her attention to hitting her first ball of the campaign. Her initial attempt was sabotaged by a joke ball on the four-yard long spring, but when this was switched for a proper ball she drove down successfully the fairway.

EFFECTIVE PRACTICE

have written a number of articles for publications Iincreasingly on effective practice as this topic is becoming appreciated to assist the transfer of new

skills to the course. There is a case for the type of practice which most golfers are familiar as long as the drills and skills are relevant and carried out with diligence. This type of practice is known as blocked which often consists of the use of one or two clubs which we hit at rapid speed with no real “on course similarity.” The question is can we replicate the shot consistency on the course particularly within a pressurised situation? I have been fortunate in my golfing career to have met and worked with some world leaders in the industry so the type of practice which is now evident is the variability of club selection, lie of the ball, shot selection with as near replication to an on course situation.

a number of reasons, some of which are out of our control. The results during a range session using the practice referred to as “blocked” will be more successful in the short term but the long term advantages of a varied practice will be evident. I personally like a mix of the two depending upon the skill level of the player, I can write from personal experience where much of my tour practice was blocked but hopefully I can pass on my knowledge and own experience to improve my clients game utilising their time effectively. I will provide ideas in next months edition to enhance your range sessions. Sarah Bennett

Course Improvements

The notoriously difficult 12th hole has undergone significant improvements throughout the winter. The hole has been played as a par 3 over recent months allowing for construction of a completely new teeing area and seeding of the fairway which suffered as a result of the hot dry summer we had. The fairway is looking vastly improved and the turf has been laid on the new tees which should be in use in early spring 150 yard marker plates (to the centre of the green) have been installed in the fairways recently, replacing the old marker posts which were 150 yards to the front of the green. n Saturday 9th February 2019 Romford Golf Club members past and present O attended the Golden Lion pub in Romford to

celebrate 125 years to the day at the exact time the club was formed. On this day back in 1894 several local dignitaries including MP’s and members of the Whitehall Golf Society met at the Golden Lion pub, Romford to agree and sign a document stating the terms and conditions and funds

and with their 35 points they put themselves two points clear of the chasing field in this the fifth round of the competition played at Thetford Golf Club. Michael Blakebrough (8) and Keith Newnham (6) were their nearest contenders with 33 points. The Lapham Trophy is played for by members over six courses during the winter months with the aggregate best three scores from the courses counting towards the trophy. With five of the rounds completed, Andrew Patrick’s three best scores give him 99 points, a one point lead from Mike Blakebrough and the previous leader Mike Carroll, both being on 98 points. There is then a gap to Andy Higgleton on 91 points and Chris Doyle on 89 followed by John Redden on 88 points. All is now to play for in the final round at Felixstowe Golf Club in March when a number of players who have two good rounds under their belt are not yet showing on the leader board but could, with a decent round, come good and sneak the trophy from under the noses of the present leading group.

needed to build the golf club one mile away at Gidea Park. A toast was raised at exactly 8pm when the original document was signed. The club has various celebrations planned throughout the year including a special club texas scramble on the day the course actually opened 12th May 1894 ... 125 years to the day. Swing the handle

A

s I am heading into my residential golf school season at Penina in Portugal, it always strikes me how consistency is so high on everyone’s priority list. It seems for many the holy grail of enjoying this great game we all fell in love with. The most important element of being consistent, is your ability to move your body the same each time, even though the clubs in our bag all look a little different, but whichever one we choose to use for a given shot the handle of the club is always in the same place, so it is irrelevant

how long shaft of the club is we only have to swing the handle around the body. Picture 1 shows how although the shafts of these three clubs, a driver, 8 iron and wedge. As you can see the handle is in the same place with all three clubs. Picture 2 shows the top of the backswing, Picture 3 impact and finally Picture 4 the finish. Start to focus your attention on the handle for a more consistent swing. Have fun golfing

GREENKEEPERS BLOG FROM ESSEX BIGGA

M

any of Essex’s finest greenkeepers headed up to North Yorkshire at the end of January for the British Turf Managers Exhibition (BTME) which attracts visitors from all over the world who wish to improve their skills and learn about new products which are used across many Golf Courses. The significantly-altered layout provided an opportunity for completely new ways of engaging with visitors and exhibitors. BIGGA Chief Executive Officer Jim Croxton said: “And just like that, BTME is over for another year. It’s been a vibrant, busy three days and I’m delighted to say that on the whole the changes we implemented for 2019 have paid off. BTME started on Sunday 20th January with the Continue to Learn program where a series of one day workshops gave greenkeepers the opportunity to learn more on topics varying from mechanics & machine maintenance, rebuilding and constructing new bunkers, using the latest technology to monitor the turf environment and understanding the maintenance and management of irrigation systems. BIGGA members take further education very seriously and all members are enrolled in Continuous Professional Development program; making the trip north were greenstaff from Thorndon Park, Romford GC, South Essex GC, Hainault GC, Orsett GC, Abridge GC and Stoke-by-Nayland GC On Tuesday, the opening day of the event, BIGGA had welcomed 3,400 people into the Harrogate Convention Centre, including exhibitors. This was followed by 3,967 visitors on Wednesday, including 1,609 new visitors, and a further 1,159, including 345 new visitors, on Thursday. Manufacturers and service providers exhibited a range of products used in managing and maintaining a golf course, the number and

scale would astound your local club golfer. Manufacturers of machinery both large and small, plant nutrition products, plant protection products, irrigation suppliers and contractors, course furniture, seed producers, commercial turf suppliers, specialist bunker lining, soil surfactants plus clothing and hand held tools were all on display at the exhibition. During the exhibition, BIGGA’s AGM took place and Leyland Golf Club’s Course Manager Scott Reeves took over the role of association chairman from Les Howkins MG. Scott is from Essex and will be sure to visit his home county whilst in this important role. Outstanding achievements within greenkeeping were also recognised during the Welcome Celebration on Tuesday 22nd January, hosted by BBC’s Naga Munchetty, where former Garon Park Assistant Greenkeeper Bill Whybrow picked up an award for best photograph taken whist working at Royal Bled Golf Course in Slovenia last summer.

The importance of BTME can not be underestimated as it allows greenkeepers to take back new ideas and products to their courses which will hopefully lead to an improvement in quality. One thing is for sure all Essex greenkeepers are hoping 2019 provides better weather than the previous year which was the toughest in living memory to keep grass healthy and alive. If you would like to know more about the work of greenkeeping teams around Essex you can follow us on twitter @essexbigga or on Facebook Essex Section Bigga.

A GAME OF CONSEQUENCE! G

olf is a unique sport, where every shot counts. Perhaps that’s what makes it so fascinating to us, in our pursuit to improve? When you think about it, that first tee shot is just as important as that final putt. That 200 yard drive (I’m being realistic here), is worth just as much as a tap in putt from 1 inch away, it still counts as one stroke.? So why do we start to feel more pressure towards the end of the round than we did at the 2nd or 3rd hole? I’ve heard many people say after a bogey or double-bogey early in the round, ’Oh well, plenty of holes to go yet’, however, if you had turned those holes into pars or just a bogey… perhaps you wouldn’t put pressure on yourself to have to birdie the last hole! Do we take as much care and give the shot the attention it deserves, when we realise we have a good score going and just need a decent finish on the 18th? So many times, I am sure you’ve witnessed, the nerves taking over the golf swing. For those old enough to remember The Open in 1970, when Doug Sanders had a relatively short putt to win the Championship, yet the ball missed the hole and he ended up in a play off (which he eventually lost). Clearly Sanders had putted well for the previous 71 holes to put himself in the position he found himself in. So whether you are playing in a Major Championship, a club competition, weekend swindle or a friendly four-ball, how much better would it be if you could control those nerves and treat every shot the same? This calls for a solid, workable routine, that you must develop and practise. Yes, thoughts will come into your head, and your mind will race forward and in it you will have already buried the putt, but a routine will soon put those thoughts into the correct place until it has become a reality. Every time you practise, ensure your practise

has a ‘consequence’. Hitting 80 balls on the range may develop your swing (or make permanent your faults! Yes, if you practise the wrong thing enough, you will become really good at doing that wrong thing)! On the range, hit targets with different clubs, changing on every shot. Clearly you don’t play golf by using the driver 30 times in a row. Take just one ball onto the putting green and play from every angle. Again, you don’t get the opportunity on the course to hit four putts on the same line. What I’m saying here is make your practise meaningful and with consequence. Smashing balls on a range or hitting the same putt on a practise green is so far removed from what you are faced with on the course, so why would you practise that? Finally a huge congratulations this month to Bentley Golf Club member and Mindzone advocate, Gary Rose who holed out on the 17th. I recall the first time Gary attended a Mind Zone session, and one of his first sentences to me was ‘I can’t chip’… well if you keep holing out, Gary, you won’t need to chip! Who knows, the next time you play golf, is it possible that you could get a hole in one? I always think that way. Until next month, I wish you the best of golfing! www.themind-zone.com

CENTER STRIKES An essential for quality golf.

H

itting the middle of the club face may seem an obvious essential but the majority of golfers generally struggle to find consistently. Center strike has a huge impact on the ball flight, missing the middle towards the edges causes the ball to fade (heel strike) or draw (toe strike) due to the gear effect caused by the irons twisting slightly during impact and the bulge and roll built in to the face of most drivers, 3 woods and hybrids. If you have swing characteristics that are heavily in favour of one shape of shot (draw or fade) and miss the middle of the face the gear effect will cause the normal flight to be either exaggerated or diminished depending on which part of the face your ball strikes at impact. I have a couple of drills to help you deliver the club more consistently and an easy way to check where your strike is on the club face. HOW TO FIND YOUR STRIKE PATTERN

All you need is a non permanent marker pen and a few balls. Mark a ball with a straight line and put it on the ground with the line vertical on the club side of the ball. Hit the shot and look at the mark left on the face. Repeat 2 or 3 times to see if its position stays somewhat consistent. You now will have your iron strike pattern, this can be repeated with your driver.

CAUSES OF POOR STRIKES

Obviously there are many faults that can cause a poor strike, but most of the obvious faults can be helped with the following fix: FAULT

Head or upper body movement which alters your height or distance from the original set up position is in my opinion the major cause of poor strikes. FIX

To alleviate this or start to minimise the movements use an alignment stick pushed in an old shaft with something like a tennis ball on top to stop the chance of injury. Set up so the tennis ball is close to your head and start to make slow swings keeping your upper body in its original posture/position. Move on to striking shots as you feel more comfortable, keep checking the impact location with the marked up balls. This is the type of drill I use with Professional Players on a daily basis, I have been lucky enough to spend a fair chunk of the winter in Australia (Bonville Golf Resort, great facilities and a big thank you!) working with some great players and I can promise you this is a quick way to make a big improvement.

Peter Osborne, Group Commercial Director at the resort said: “Stoke by Nayland offers two of the best and most iconic golf courses in the East of England, situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The resort has hosted many internationally televised PGA and European Tour golf events over the years and with this experience we are well placed to host the first event of this kind in the region. “Our inaugural Festival of Golf is a perfect opportunity for visitors to combine a British countryside holiday with golf at a renowned venue, and the three days will be packed full of fun and entertainment. "We hope that this event will grow, and that more people will take up golf as a result of their experience. During the festival, golfers can also raise funds for local charities by trying to hit golf balls into a hole anchored in one of our lakes! “The Festival is open to all levels of golfers, groups of friends, societies, couples and families of all ages and we aim for this to be the first of many such events in years to come.” For more information please visit www.stokebynayland.com/festival-of-golf-2019 or to book please call 01206 265827 or email reservations@stokebynayland.com.

Vicki Cumberworth has been in the fitness industry over 10 years, working with golfers since 2007 after completing a challenging course in California to become a golf Biomechanic. Vicki advises clients on how to improve their golf swing and eradicate faults through flexibility/core/posture while also working on strength and conditioning. Vicki can be contacted by email on vickipt@hotmail.co.uk or Tel 07921 075 212 web www.vickipt.com

WEIGHTS ARE NOT

SCARY! Weights will make you bulky? Weights will slow down your swing? Weights will decrease flexibility therefore affect your swing negatively?

WRONG!

esistance training when performed correctly and alongside a flexibility programme will R build stability, create strength and power in your

swing. Its when body building programmes are followed and non specific to golf programmes that a man especially can get a negative effect using weights. For me, core, posture and flexibility comes first with a golfer ... to then progress into resistance training ... it will always stay functional. Functional movement patterns that will have a good carryover to golf. For golfers i try to stick to pulls, pushes, twists, bends, squats and the lunge pattern. I use these functional movements to write my golfers programmes ... using good technique and

altering the technique slightly to have more carryover to golf. Building muscle is only good! Without muscle the golf swing is like firing a cannon from a canoe ... injury will happen. The golf swing is way more challenging than anyone makes out. I hear people slate golf as a “sport all the time BUT it is complex, challenging on the body and very technical! Weights will not only help you have more power behind the ball but it will protect you from injury long term also. Learn from an experienced coach, follow a programme and concentrate on the body being a machine ... everything needs to work together to create the end product! - 44 -

MAJOR BRANDS WILL BE AT BRITISH GOLF SHOW

H

igh Wycombe, Bucks - Callaway, Cobra, The Belfry, Duca del Cosma, Zen Green Stage and Power Tee are some of the latest well-known brands to confirm their presence at this year’s inaugural British Golf Show. Working alongside golf retailer Custom Lab Golf, Callaway and Cobra will be offering visitors the chance to test their 2019 product ranges by bringing their Demo Day teams. And there will be a host of other demonstrations by golf brands at the highly interactive exhibition, which is co-located alongside the well-established 'Elite Events - London' combined lifestyle show. The British Golf Show offers free entry to golfers and their families, as well as free entry to the co-located Elite Events - London. Show organisers are promising a unique experience for all visitors. “Preparations are going well for our first golf show” said Alex Ayling, Managing Director of show organisers The Elite Luxury Events. “Although we have been running aviation and luxury lifestyle exhibitions and events for many years, this is our first step into the dedicated golf market. “We have a major point of difference from any previous golf show, in that it is co-located with The Elite Events - London, which features an amazing collection of vehicles, aircraft, helicopters and numerous other spectacular luxury lifestyle exhibits which guarantee a memorable day out right alongside our many golf attractions and exhibits.” Although the British Golf Show will feature a wide variety of golfing brands and products, there is a special focus on Golf Technology and Travel in the first year’s exhibition. Visitors will therefore see golf clubs, resorts and destinations exhibiting alongside the latest golfing tech such as distance measuring devices, launch monitors and simulators, training aids, powered trolleys, technical apparel and footwear and golfing apps. Special attractions at the British Golf Show include indoor hitting and indoor putting areas, plus a 300-yard Outdoor Driving Range on the airfield where Custom Lab Golf, Cobra, Callaway,Vertical Groove Golf, Eleven Golf and other equipment brands will demonstrate their 2019 ranges. Among other golf attractions will be the revolutionary Zen Green Stage, as used by Sky Sports Golf both in the studio and at live events

including The Ryder Cup, The Open Championship, The Masters and The U.S Open. The Green Stage will be set up for British Golf Show visitors to attempt to hole famous putts from Tour Golf history, including Graeme McDowell’s crucial 15-footer on the 16th at Celtic Manor in 2010, which set up Europe’s Ryder Cup victory. The British Golf Show’s unique location at Wycombe Air Park is another strong selling point, according to Alex Ayling. “Our show will feel very different to previous golf exhibitions” he said. “We are not hidden away inside a giant exhibition centre, or a sideshow at a golf tournament. Instead, the British Golf Show offers a fascinating free day out, away from the golf course, at an interesting airfield location. Furthermore, the event location enables us to deliver additional unique experiences for all to enjoy, offering much added value to our visitors".

combined with the Joe Crumpen Memorial Tournament as Chelmsford Golf Club was undergoing course work. The course was presented, as always, in an excellent condition and, together with the unseasonal spring like weather, produced some amazing scoring. Leading the way and taking the Joe Crumpen Memorial Trophy were the all Professional pair of Robert Coles and Darren Parker from Maylands Golf and Country Club. A better ball score of 45 points was helped in no small way by 7 birdies and an eagle from Coles but Parker made an important par at the 1st hole to set the ball rolling. There were three runners up in the all Professional competition, Jason Levermore and Chris Cutchie, Darren Turner and Daniel Gibbs and Jack Nicholls with partner Ben Wyatt, all with 42 points. The Professional and amateur category was won by Michael Vandenberg and Steve Farrell from Rochford Hundred Golf Club on countback from Steve Cipa from South Essex Golf Centre and amateur partner Glen Langenberg both pairs scoring 43 points. The winning amateur pair was Peter Cumberworth and Ron Ryall from Chelmsford

Golf Pride Launches New Contour Pro Putter Grip

olf Pride has expanded its range of Tour G SNSR putter grips with the launch of the new Contour Pro.

The new grip is offered in a pistol-shape in two oversized models for high levels of feel and feedback. It boasts the same soft, ultra-tuned rubber formulation as its predecessors, giving the grip an excellent feel and facilitating lighter grip pressure to encourage a smoother stroke. Proprietary Tour SNSR technology enhances feedback, affording better distance control on greens of all speeds. The new grip also features soft, rounded edges, and a pistol flare back to more naturally fit in the hands. The pistol shape includes a wide, paddle front for a consistent landing zone for the fingers, and a tapered profile for players who prefer the traditional, sculptured grip design. “The Tour SNSR has been our most popular putter grip family since its introduction two years ago,” said Bruce Miller, Product Manager, Golf Pride. “With the new Contour Pro, we took our most preferred shape on Tour and combined it with our oversize Tour SNSR technology. When it comes to putting, amateurs and professionals are on a more level playing field. The new Contour Pro offers those elite player-shape preferences that aid in consistent stroke and distance control.” Available in black/grey, and in 104cc and 140cc sizes, the Contour Pro will be available at retail in March. www.golfpride.com.

Spearheading the Fall 19 collection, the brand’s Crown Crafted capsule, which is currently being worn on tour by Peter Millar ambassadors Lee Westwood, Brandt Snedeker and Branden Grace, and many others, features the finest luxury Italian yarns blended with cutting-edge technology and is offered in more tailored silhouettes that appeal to gentlemen seeking performance sportswear with a renewed and heightened sense of style. With the ability to perform in the most extreme weather conditions, Peter Millar continues to innovate in the outerwear category, with an array of technical layering garments, including reversible vests, fleeces, softshell jackets, full-zip hybrids, packable windbreakers and the ultimate 3-layer waterproof rain suit. The brand introduces a new collection of Natural Touch products that boast a unique blend of polyestertencel, which provides the perfect balance of performance, breathability and natural comfort. “The main inspiration behind the Fall 19 collection was the importance of developing luxurious layering pieces that our customers can wear on the golf course, but are also perfectly versed for travel and other leisure activities,” commented Mark Hilton, Peter Millar International Managing Director. “Our focus each and every season is innovation and our team are constantly researching and developing new proprietary fabrics that will provide our customers with optimal performance benefits – such as shape retention, comfort stretch, breathability and weather resistance. technology that adds temperature and altitude to an improved version of the brand’s patented slope technology to give golfers the most precise distances ever. The improved slope facility takes into account the most updated ball flight measurements, giving a much sharper angle of descent over the previous algorithm. Bushnell provides the only compensated ‘Play As’ distance that takes actual ball flight into account, whereas competitors use simple geometry, which is easy to calculate, but not nearly as accurate.

The Pro XE also features PinSeeker with Visual Jolt Technology, which sees a red ring flash on the viewfinder as the handset vibrates to give the golfer even greater feedback and confidence to know they have locked onto the flag. The Pro XE also boasts a magnetic mount that allows it to be safely secured to a cart or trolley without the need for an extra attachment. Offering seven-times magnification and capable of measuring up to 500 yards, the viewfinder features an enhanced ultra-bright backlight display to provide clear data output in the LCD, the Pro XE is fully waterproof and comes with a carry case that can be clipped on to a golf bag, or attached through a belt loop, plus a Velcro golf bag strap attachment. “The Pro XE sets a new standard in laser rangefinders,” said Andrew Grose, Bushnell Golf Managing Director. “From improved optics and longer ranging, to convenience features like Visual Jolt and BITE, Pro XE offers features that golfers at all skill levels can appreciate. Updating our proprietary slope algorithm and adding ‘elements’ brings unmatched precision to the rangefinder industry, making it the clear choice for Tour and elite amateur players.” www.bushnellgolf.com

ike most clubs the early part of the year brings a slowdown in golfing activity and events so the news from THGC is of our drive in’s. First up this year was the Ladies Captain Jan Soilleux who hit her ball straight down the middle.

The Committee wishes all teams the best of the weather and good matches, and would wish you all luck, but have a conflict of interest against those teams playing against Colchester GC, Crondon Park, The Notleys and Stock Brook Manor! Let us see who will join the winning 2018 team shown below, from Stoke by Nayland, in putting their name on the trophy for 2019 For all clubs please keep tracking our updates: See us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thejubileecup. Follow us on Twitter: @jubilee_cup The Jubilee Committee are always looking for volunteers to help us out – please contact myself or one of the Committee at the Contact details on our Homepage (top-right).

Two days later it was the turn of Cadet Captain Millie Penfold who showed why she has just joined the Eastern Region England under 18’s camp, her drive sailed two hundred and twenty yards up the 1st fairway.

Then the next day it was the turn of new Club Captain, Stewart Hayden in the guise of Elvis (he loves Las Vegas). Under the watchful eyes of ten past captains and a hundred or so members his drive landed at a respectable distance just off the fairway.

declared ground under repair and the competition was played off the yellow tees. Bernard Keyes with his 29 handicap won the Trophy with a matching 29 points. Improving Keith Pike (30) took second place scoring 28 points, beating Will Elder into third place on countback. Senior Captain, Stephen Peeling, was the only player to secure a sleeve of balls for his birdie on the par three 3rd hole.

ALAN AND DAN SPRINGING INTO ACTION

lan Sharrocks and Dan Nicholls made no mistakes in collecting the Turner Scratch A Foursomes at Colchester GC, played in what was mid-spring weather and with greens welcoming approach shots there could be no excuses in this the first men’s competitive golf in the Club’s season. Certainly Sharrocks and Nicholls needed no excuses as they did little wrong in their round. With bogeys on the third and fifth holes the pair turned just off the pace at two over par.

They then added a level par back nine, which included one bogey and one birdie, which completed their score card of two over par. This score gave them a two shot win over second placed James Angel and Lewis Barber who were four over par on 74 gross. Third place, also with a two shot gap was Glenn Clark and Steve Jennings on 76. In fourth spot were John Blackmore and Bill Eke returning a score of 77 gross and in fifth place were the Durrell twins, Matt and Tom.
