7th Heaven for Diana V

ice Captain Diana Harris had a Hole in one on the 7th hole on the Gainsborough course at Stoke by Nayland. Using her favourite 7 wood, it was a lovely shot, one bounce and in the hole! She was playing a friendly game with two New Members who she was merrily relaying a story of a lady who had got a hole in one with her in a previous competition on that hole, not aware that she was about to do the same!

COLCHESTER

I

nto May and the very warm patch we had in late April has transformed most courses.

There is still some catching up to do and plenty of long rough! However we have seen a major pick up in shoe purchases (no point buying a new pair if the mud is going to ruin them!). Ball sales have also gone through the roof. Partly I think due to the long rough but also some specials we have on balls at the moment. These are proving very popular. Coloured balls are definitely taking a bigger share of the market with Srixon, Volvik, Titleist and Wilson all doing some great colours! Over these 2 pages you will see some offers but also a bit more information on what's in store. Please visit as you won't be disappointed and we'll give you the best service possible to ensure you go leave with the right product suitable for your game.

Essex Schools Team Winners 2018 – Barking Abbey School.

Essex Schools Hold First Team Championships E

ssex Schools Golf Association held their first team event at Theydon Bois Golf Club on the 17th April. 12 teams of three players took part in 18 holes of Stableford competition with the two best scores to count. The weather had been poor the week before and the course although wet had been prepared at length by the greenkeepers. The individual scores reflected the fact that nobody found the course easy although one result was exceptional, Ellis DeStefano of Barking Abbey School had 44pts, the next being Josh Coleman of Colchester VI Form College with 35pts. King John B team was represented by 3 girls, well done to them on beating their boys team! It was an excellent beginning and we hope that there will be many more teams in future years. Thanks you to Theydon Bois for making us so welcome and asking us to return next year.

Lily May Wins Scottish Title to Secure Curtis Cup Place E

ssex teenage international Lily May Humphreys shot four-under par 68 in the final round to win by a stroke from Scotland’s Chloe Goadby. It’s Humphreys’ sixth title in the last 10 months and it marks a welcome return to top form for the 16-year-old, who is also the English women’s amateur champion. “It’s great to have my game under control again. I think this is my biggest win, beating an international field.” The 16-year-old was five-under and one shot off the lead going in to the final round. She finished on nine-under par after a superb closing four-under 68 in the breezy conditions, helped by a hat-trick of birdies from the seventh, with

two further birdies at 12 and 13 ultimately proving decisive. Goadby, in the group in front, just couldn’t reel Humphreys in, and her bogey at the par-3 17th saw her slip two shots behind. A birdie at the last for her own 68 put pressure on Humphreys but the Stoke by Nayland player held on for glory. Defending champion Linn Grant from Sweden finished third on seven under par – with the Swedes taking the team title by a shot over Scotland. England’s Bel Wardle (Prestbury) took fifth place on four-under. The 18-year-old has already won the Portuguese amateur this season, adding it to 2017 wins in the English women’s and girls’ open championships.

The Mayor of Brentwood Attends the Official Opening of the Clubhouse at Bentley Golf Club.

I

t was a day of celebration when 160 Golfers turned out to celebrate the official opening of their recently refurbished Clubhouse. On hand to oversee the Grand Opening of the Clubhouse at Bentley Golf Club was the Mayor of Brentwood Will Russell. The day commenced with a fun game of golf, with five players in each team. The Mayor a keen Golfer got the proceedings underway. Despite the rainy weather conditions some teams came in with some outstanding scores. The winning team was Jack Davis, Ron Hadley, Tony Hadley, Stuart Curran and Paul Moisey with a score of 132 points. Team captain Stuart Curran said it was a great team game and the atmosphere in the Clubhouse afterwards was amazing. It was good to see so many Golfers enjoying themselves. David Scott, Chairman of Bentley Golf Holdings PLC and Jim Mahoney, Chairman of Bentley Golf Club Ltd were full of praise for the Architects, the Builders and the Interior Designers who had the vision to deliver a new Clubhouse with a modern and practical look. The development which took six months to achieve saw the footprint of the Club extended, disabled toilets installed, refurbishment throughout

including a new bar as well as the replacement of all soft furnishings. Outside the Patio was extended allowing for individuals to sit and view more of the Golf Course. To compliment the Course and the Clubhouse, the Pro Shop also received a much needed makeover. The Mayor, Will Russell said that the refurbishment of the Clubhouse would benefit the community as a whole and was pleased that Members, Families and Friends would be able to enjoy the facilities for a number of years to come. Mark Gallop, Managing Club Secretary said today, was an overwhelming success with an additional 50 family and friends attending the evening celebrations. Today was also about thanking all of the Members and Staff for their patience whilst undergoing our Club’s refurbishment. While phase one has come to a close we will continue to invest in the Golf Course and the Clubhouse with the aim of becoming one of the top Golf Clubs in the County. Anyone interested in finding out more or joining Bentley Golf Club can contact Mark Gallop on 01277 373179 or email secretary@bentleygolfclub.com

Southwold Golf Club Festival of Golf Week 11th to 19th August 2018

O

ne of East Anglia’s oldest golf courses, Southwold Golf Club, is gearing up to celebrate this gem of a course on the Suffolk coast in August this year. A variety of Club events for members as well as Open and Invitational competitions for visitors and members will take place over the week. The week commences with the showcase event, a Pro-Am on Saturday 11th August. This will attract professionals from across the region playing in a team of four alongside three amateur golfers. The week will also include a Ladies Invitational, Seniors Pairs Open, Gents Team Open, a Mixed Open and a Club Team event involving all sections of the Club, culminating in the Men’s Club Championship on the final Sunday. A variety of social events are planned to run alongside the competitions. Established in 1884 this delightful 9 hole course is situated on the Common in

Southwold, on land bequeathed to the town by William Godyll in the sixteenth century for “sport and recreation.” The course has magnificent views across the marshes and down to the harbour and the North Sea. Accuracy off the tee and approach shots is essential, particularly when the wind blows, making this a good test of a golfers’ ability. Many visitors comment on the excellence of the greens and the overall friendliness of the Club. The Club are keen to involve local businesses, making this a community event, and a number of sponsors, including Adnams and Sizewell EDF have already pledged their support. Details of the Open and Invitational events have been circulated to all clubs in the region and can also be found on Empire Golf. For more information please contact the Club Manager, Gareth Jones, on 01502 723234 or email mail@southwoldgolfclub.co.uk.

Allow the putter to lag on long putTs J

udging distance is a skill that we already possess, if we throw a ball to a target we can naturally get very close, we use our vision to tell us how hard to throw. But what is important is that as we throw we do not have rigid wrist, they are allowed to soften as we throw. When we putt which is not to dissimilar a skill we also want to have a soft loose hold on the putter, and as we swing allow a little lag on the shaft, you will find great results on judging distance.

The sequence of pictures shows me hitting a 40 foot put notice the angle at address between my left four arm and the shaft then in close up halfway down the downswing impact and beyond. Allowing a nice natural release of the club through the swing. Give it a try and good golfing.

Gary

PLANNING IS KEY TO SUCCESS I

n all walks of life whether it’s sport, business, or personal and family life you re always better off with a plan. Golf is certainly no different and whoever reads this it applies to us all. I recently had a gentleman who’s ‘golfing goal’ was to reach a# single figure handicap. When he first came to see me he played off of a 12 handicap and had been that handicap for a long while.Whilst I was interested in his technique and where that could help him improve I was also interested in his weekly golf diary and how he fitted in playing golf around work and family commitments. That’s not me being nosey that’s just a fact that if he only played once a week, didn’t practice to improve, played limited competitions and didn’t focus on the areas that was hindering his game he wouldn’t achieve his goal. If you think about it it s only three shots to find so it was a question of pinpointing those key areas. I devised a practice program for him and also a separate scorecard he filled in for me on the course to help him understand his game more. He did this in between our golf lessons and I’m pleased to say last week he text me to say he’d achieved his goal. Junior golfers in particular start with the dream of winning The Open or playing in the Ryder Cup / Solheim Cup etc. Some want to go to America for

college some stay at home but ultimately the ones who achieve their goals are the ones that have a plan in place and work hardest to achieve their dream. I have some lads now that want to be caddies so there has to be a plan in place on how to achieve this. My advice to you all would be to have a plan of how you re going to achieve your goal. Have plans of when you re going to compete, when you’re going to develop your technique to the standard required for your goal, when you re going to learn new shots to improve your scores, how much time you practice in the week taking into account school, other outside activities and time spent with friends. Sometimes this means making sacrifices but if that what it needs to achieve your goal that’s what you need to be prepared to do. I read an article on Lydia Ko 2 years ago which came out a year or so after she was taking the LPGA by storm and at 15 she was playing golf or practicing 35 hours per week. That’s an average of 5 hours a day so their must have been some huge sacrifices made by a few people not just the player herself. Also there must have been a PLAN! Ultimately it s no fluke that someone ends up being the best in their chosen profession and one things for sure there was a careful plan along the way that may have had to change slightly along route. So next time you have a golf lesson remember to make sure you know what your coach is asking of you and also make sure they know what you want to achieve so you can work together to achieve it. Good luck.

We had a fantastic turn out with 22 girls playing the 18 hole stableford competition and 32 beginners and improvers in the first Girls Golf Rocks event of 2018. Although the day was a bit cold and misty everyone had a good time, with some great scores in the stableford competition. The Beginners and Improvers started their day with icebreaker games and then moved on to some skills covering Putting, Chipping and Long game coached by Clacton’s PGA Professional Sam Teer. After lunch they either played a 4 hole Texas scramble or stayed in the warm to design their own golf bags and Polo Tops. All in all it was a great start to the new season.

This competition finally reached its climax with the Williams twins meeting Martin Halls and Danny Simmons in the final. With an original field of over 120, to get to the final after playing through the best and worst of the winter for both pairs is a massive achievement but to win this much coveted trophy for the third time is a unique and un-paralleled achievement. - 20 -

Wonderful Day at Playgolf

G

ood weather and course conditions were evident for the first Major of the Playgolf Colchester golfing Calendar, the AP Masters. The first of a series of sponsored events saw Paul Dafforn put on a superb day of golf and presentation of prizes, including a Masters-style “coveted” Green Jacket. The competition was set to individual medal play requiring four balls as there was such a large field. There were some superb scores returned with the receptive course conditions on offer. Lee Kidger (6) took the Green Jacket with a superb gross 74, which

consisted of 11 pars and two birdies, including a par three two. Jack Moutell (6) was second with his gross 76 including eight pars and a brace of par four birdies. Steve Loran (11) carded gross 77 to take third place with 11 pars, earning a shot handicap cut. Josh Stephenson (16) took top nett prize with a superb nett 64, earning a shot handicap cut. Malcom Corris (20) took second place with his nett 65, also earning a shot handicap cut. Bernard Martin was third on countback from Geoff Backhouse after both carded level-CSS nett 68. Par three, nearest the pin prizes went to Mick Farr, Darren Kerr and Simon Longman. There was a good number of members staying behind for the high-jinx presentation, with lots of laughter and positive cheering on, as event sponsor and birthday boy: Paul Dafforn, presented the prizes, with the final act being gross winner, Lee Kidger, being presented with the prestigious AP Masters Green Jacket. On reflection, the day was a resounding success with lots of fun had with many new members taking the opportunity to mix.

Coles and Beglan Win Curtain-Raiser

E

ssex golf ace Rob Coles began the new season as he finished 2017 – savouring success. Last year’s PGA East Region champion teamed up with his sponsor Grant Beglan to win the 20th renewal of the Searles PGA Spring Classic. The Maylands Golf and Country Club professional and nine-handicapper Beglan notched up 87 points to win the two-round competition by six from Chase Davis (Marriott Sprowston Manor Hotel) and his father Garry. The winning duo recorded 42 points in the opening day’s Stableford greensomes at King’s

Paul Searle, managing director of Searle’s Leisure Resort, hands over the trophy to amateur Grant Beglan (right) along with Rob Coles (left).

Lynn. Beglan rolled in a near 50-foot birdie putt on the final green and that was enough for a halfway tie at the top with the Davis combination. But Coles and Beglan surged clear on day two under a better ball format at Hunstanton. Their tally of 45 points was the highest of any partnership and meant that the former European Tour star’s first trip in 18 years to the everpopular Spring Classic was a winning one. Coles, 45, said: “I’m delighted. To win with Grant was lovely as we are good friends. Grant played really well. He didn’t miss a green with his irons.” Indeed Beglan’s accuracy with his approach play proved vital to the victory. The pair had made a strong start to their second round but midway through it their playing partners, the Davis duo, looked set to slash the gap at the top. Coles was in trouble at the par-five ninth, Beglan found a dune on the left with his second, while Chase Davis struck a tremendous 6-iron shot from 212 yards to six feet to set up an eagle opportunity that he would convert. But Beglan stepped up to unleash a telling blow of his own. Coles said: “Grant hit a great shot from the dune to about six inches and tapped in for birdie. I was looking like making bogey so that was a big moment, I felt. Then I made eagle from eight feet on the 15th and we birdied 16 and 17 so that got us through.”

Ivan Springs Into Action

T

he Playgolf Colchester course was presented in top condition for a busy weekend of competition, starting with the rearranged board-competition: The Spring Cup. The hand-cut and ironed greens were in superb form, with good pace on offer and some tricky pin positions, requiring accurate iron play or a sharp short-game. Ivan Southernwood (18) won the event, earning a two-shot handicap cut and his name on

the board again. Ivan’s superb round of nett 66 saw him take the win by two clear shots. His round of seven pars and a par four birdie gave him a two-shot cushion over second place Stephen Marr (23) who also earned a shot cut next time out. Marr’s three pars and well managed card saw him take second place by a shot from Matthew Clark. Clark completed the top three, also earning a shot cut to 15 with card highlights of eight pars. - 28 -

England and Todd Clements Dominate European Nations Championship with 20-Shot Win E

alongside Ireland’s Alex Neeson and Denmark’s Rasmus Neergard-Petersen. England Golf ’s Gareth Jenkins was team manager and paid tribute to the players’ scoring skills and the preparation masterminded by coach Graham Walker. “The team was just fabulous in the way they dominated,” he said. “We had two outstanding days of preparation. Graham has been here many times, he’s very experienced and knows how conditions can become very tricky. We had a very good strategy of hitting into zones and it was absolutely spot on. “The boys followed through and they played magnificently. They came into it really well prepared, able to control the ball flight and their short game was outstanding.”

ngland swept away the competition at the European Team Championship at Sotogrande, Spain, winning the trophy by 20 shots, while national champion Todd Clements took the individual title by five strokes.

The England team alongside Clements, of Braintree, Essex, was: joint runner-up Gian-Marco Petrozzi of Trentham, Staffordshire; Matthew Jordan of Royal Liverpool, Cheshire; and David Hague of Malton & Norton,Yorkshire. They staked their claim to the trophy with a blistering first day when their best three scores totalled seven-under par and they led by 11 shots. After that they were relentless in maintaining the pressure, despite the tricky, windy conditions. The team led by 21 at the halfway stage; by 15 after three rounds; then they underlined their domination in the final round with a team total of 10-under par. The finished on 11-under, while their closest challengers, Ireland, were nine-over. Denmark, in third place, were 16 over. Clements, the English amateur champion, was in contention for the individual prize throughout the championship, jockeying for position with Petrozzi over the opening two rounds. Clements opened up a three-shot lead after three round and, with a final round of 70, finished on five-under par. Petrozzi tied second on level par

Robert Few (25) carried on with his recent run of good form to record a very impressive net 64 to win by 4 shots. New senior member John Eade (21) also carded an under par score his net 68 taking second place. Tony Millington (23) took third place with his net 70. Competition sponsor: Trevor Cocksedge (13) took fifth place with the lowest gross score on the day with gross 84 (13 H/C) 71 nett. Golfstream Delivers Electric Dream with New Feature-packed Vision Trolley

G

olfstream, the Kent based trolley manufacturer and sole distributor of CaddyCell lithium batteries, have launched their most feature packed electric golf trolley to date. Addressing one of the key issues with electric trolleys – reading the screen in direct sunlight – the aptly named Vision golf trolley comes with a revolutionary new Caddy White display screen that can be read in even the brightest, most direct sunlight. Think e-Reader and you will get the idea. Add to this their simple, revolutionary one-click open and close mechanism and the Golfstream Vision becomes the easiest and simplest electric trolley to use in the world of golf. To compliment the new launch Golfstream have also launched a new web site and a slick new logo. The new fully-responsive site www.golfstream.co.uk – has been designed with the user-experience firmly in mind. With improved navigation and functionality, customers can easily access product information and video content across the full-range of digital devices. Derek Richford, Managing Director said “All golfers have battled to read the screens on their golf trolleys since they first came onto the scene, we felt it was about time that this most annoying issue was addressed. It doesn’t take a lot of sunlight to make reading the traditional black screens difficult to see due to intense reflection, but the Caddy White screen removes this issue no matter where golf is played in the world. It’s new, revolutionary and we believe will make using an electric trolley more convenient and enjoyable”. Derek continued “Seeing people struggling to open and close their machines at the boot of their car inspired us to design the Vision one touch mechanism, we believe it makes the Vision the easiest trolley to use in the world”. The new Vision electric trolley from Golfstream is packed with

premium performance features yet comes at the incredible price of just £449 inc VAT for the 18-hole lithium version. New features include: n patented one-touch, easy-fold mechanism that makes the Vision the simplest trolley to set up and fold away in the world n small fold down size making it one of the most compact trolleys in its class in the market today n magnetic latch that holds the trolley together in the folded position to make carrying and transporting the Vision hassle-free. n high-grip slick PU tyres that are five times more durable than normal tyres providing a supersmooth, cushioned ride for your clubs and valuables. n 200v whisper-quiet motor that will carry clubs with ease across all terrains. An 18-hole lithium CaddyCell LifePO4 battery, which is supplied as standard, sits in a sleek power platform that is conveniently designed to take all other popular brands of batteries. As with all Golfstream trolleys, the Vision holds your golf bag firmly in place by using the side arms, rather than balancing it on the central spine as most others do, avoiding unnecessary ‘bag wobble’ over bumpy ground. A non-clogging front wheel housing, combined with easily detachable main wheels, ensures that cleaning and servicing is also a simple task. The button on the handle enables the Vision to be programmed for left and right-handed use and provides access to a distance control function, with speed increments of 0.5, enabling the speed to be perfectly matched to a golfer’s walking pace. The main Caddy White screen can be personalised with a golfer’s details, whilst there is a ‘simplicity’ mode, also accessed through the button on the handle, for golfer’s who just want to get on with their game with the minimum of features. For complete customisation, the whole colour scheme can be quickly swapped to any one of five colours from Golfstream’s new accessory range available soon after Vision is launched. The Golfstream Vision, which comes with a twoyear parts and labour guarantee represents great value for money for golfers that demand total performance and reliability from their power trolley. STRUGGLING TO HIT YOUR 4 IRON? IT’S PROBABLY NOT YOUR FAULT! I

have heard many times about how a golfer changed their irons and are now so much longer with the new ones. From a fitting perspective this can happen, if your original irons did not suit you well and the new ones do then it makes sense that they will perform better. From a technical perspective if your old irons were a few years old then the loft of the new irons will be significantly stronger or to put it another way your new 6 iron is really a 5 iron so of course it will go further. In my opinion this is a disease the golfer could well do without. Reason being is that all this does is create gaps in the shorter end of the bag, in the wedges, which are basically the scoring clubs. At the other end of the bag many golfers are dropping their 4 iron but from a cost perspective this does not really make a difference as you need to buy more wedges to plug the gaps at the other end. So the only real ‘winner’ in the bag is the mid-section as they go a bit further, longer clubs are harder to use due to the lack of loft and all of a sudden we have numerous wedges to choose from which can be confusing. I suppose at this point it makes sense to talk a little about good iron play ... what exactly is it? Well, for most it’s about side

ways dispersion (how much you miss to the right or left) but in reality short and long is just as important. In fact when you see a top player on their game they will pretty much hit the ball pin high (level with the pin) most of the time. If there is a failing with the newer irons I think it is in this department, funky face designs can be inconstant making distance control difficult ... yes you may hit the clubs further but it can be a lottery how far you hit them. It’s for this reason I have dropped or decided not to offer certain brands of irons, I don’t really want the ‘wow’ factor of distance in the fitting I want the consistency when the player gets to the course. So, to sum it up if you can’t hit your 4 iron anymore then it’s probably not your fault ... you’ve just been given a 3 iron with a 4 stamped on the bottom of it.

GET YOUR LOW POINT UNDER CONTROL FOR BETTER CHIPPING

I

t continues to astonish me that so many players struggle with their chipping. It should be a simple shot as it is very much like tossing a ball. The main issue seems to be with making a repeatable strike of the ball. Thin and fat chips generally result in some card wrecking scores, frustration and even players believing they have the yips. So why is this? There are a number of reasons but the first step to improving your chipping is to get control of the low point of the swing. If you can do this, you can start making better contact resulting in better distance control.

If you notice that the low point of the arc is behind the ball you can start to understand why this seemingly simple shot may be dishclout for a lot of golfers. If you can just focus on a few key things in the set-up and the motion you will start to get this under control. We will cover these key ideas in the next few months but in the meantime, really have a think about this low point idea.

TRY THIS EXERCISE: n Make some practice swings in front of the ball and note where your club strikes the ground To start to understand where your low point is, make some practice swings in front of the ball not thinking too much and start to pay attention to where the club strikes the ground. If you struggle with your chipping it will generally be behind the ball.

Is This Your Story? W

e all have our favourite sayings and doubtless you would have heard many commentators on TV coming out with these little gems! n n n n n n

Golf is a mind game, it’s all in the mind Stay in the present moment I can’t concentrate for a whole round Golf is a game of confidence I don’t play well in competitions Why can I play so well on the driving range but not on the course? n I miss those clutch putts n I have a ‘nemesis’ hole n I struggle to focus n I’m not enjoying my golf. If you are really honest with yourself, you can possibly relate to a number of the statements above. Most certainly you will have heard many people say this, especially after a less than average round! But does it have to be that way? What if you could change the narrative? This is exactly what we do at The Mind Zone. By using simple tools and techniques from the tour, you can learn to deal with your emotions on the golf course allowing you to perform at your best. Regardless of your golfing ability, how much more enjoyment could you get out of your round, if you were only 4 or 5 shots less?

Improve the way you think on the course by either attending a 1-day workshop or have The Mind Zone come to your golf club for an evening session. Over the past two years The Mind Zone has worked with hundreds of golfers from professionals to new players, ladies sections, elite players and club teams with some great results. If you have situations that affect your performance on the course let us know at The Mind Zone and we will endeavour to respond with ideas to help you. Follow us in the Essex Golfer this season and look on the website for details of workshops together with some hints and tips to help your game. We are also on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, so feel free to communicate. Everyone has the ability to improve their game, so what’s stopping you? Finally, if you are one of the golfers that has a great front nine, then fades on the back, contact us… we have a solution for you! Alternatively, you may have a poor front nine and then a storming back nine… again, contact us, we have a solution for you too! Come and discover how a simple golf tee can improve your putting tenfold! To validate our tools and techniques, we always ask for feedback from attendees, here’s some evidence that what we do WORKS!

‘It’s said that your mental attitude is just as important as your technique in golf. The Mind Zone is a course that tackles that in an entertaining, informative and thought provoking manner. I already use the hints and techniques suggested and would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone wanting to improve their golf. It doesn’t matter what your handicap is either, the course I attended had a complete range of playing handicaps.’ ‘Hi Gary & David, a quick note, just to say ‘Thank You’ for a well presented topic. As my wife booked it without my knowledge, and as I have most of the books on the subject, I didn’t expect to learn a lot, if I am honest. I was wrong! You have made me very aware of what I am doing during games with regards to my thoughts. Just to prove how much it helped, I played both my games last week 3 and 4 under my handicap. All I have to do now is build on it!’ ‘Attending the session was great, Gary & David showed myself and a group how important psychology is in the game of golf. The amount of golfers who play the 1st hole great, stand on the 2nd and go on to take three to get out the green side bunker, losing all concentration and confidence. The Mind Zone workshop can fix this, they have great techniques to help maintain your attention enabling you to have a calm mind, however you are playing.’ The Mind Zone was created to give golf enthusiasts, whether they are professionals, amateurs, club or society golfers or just simply playing for fun... the EDGE! David Tingey, is a PGA Pro of over 20 years and uses these techniques in his teaching and Gary Boyes, a single-figure amateur golfer, has a huge fascination of all things ‘mind’ related! great start to the year was had at The Notleys Golf Club the friendly club with a great future. Not only have we seen an influx of new members seeking to benefit from the excellent rates and the improvements on the course, but we also continued the brilliant support of our membership with two excellent new captains - Club Captain Rick Vince and Seniors Captain Malcolm Shead. Outgoing Club Captain Dene I’Anson gave praise to the support of the club and its members during his 17/18 tenures, and to the thousands of pounds raised for his chosen charity Little Havens Hospice www.havenshospices.org.uk/little-havenshospice Our Captains putted out on the 18th green, which set us up well for the new Captain’s drive and Texas Scramble competition. The latter actually being won by team members for second time running. Returning winner Dan Finch is shown below holding the hallowed Jock Brown trophy, in memory of one of our most popular members’ grandfather. Dan said, he was, “Proud to be part of two great teams and win the legendary Jock Brown trophy back to back 2017 & 2018” and is further shown here with team mates and new Captains. From left to right: Seniors Captain Malcolm “Steady” Shead, members Nigel Hollis and Ian Hayden, Dan Finch, and on far right, 2018/19 Notleys Club Captain Rick Vince. Rick and Malcolm would like to thank all those who supported on the day and generously donated, even when not playing, and we all collectively look forward to our future special events like the charity Fancy dress event, Night Golf and Presentation Curry Nights.

GOLF TIPS FOR AROUND THE COURSE As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easy-to-understand. Essex Seniors Team Championship

Stoke by Nayland Win a Thriller at Braintree

T

he Stoke by Nayland Seniors Team travelled to Braintree expecting a tough match in the first round of the Essex Seniors Team Championship. They were to be proved correct! This competition involves 11 games of singles matchplay, with each game being worth one point. All the matches were evenly balanced with not many shots being given or received. Given the recent wet weather, the course was in good condition and played its full length off the medal tees. Many of the matches swung one way then the other. Arguably the performance of the day came from Gerald Collins, who at one stage was close to going 5 down to Robert Barrell but he clawed his way back and won the last 4 holes to win 2 up. With 10 of the 11 matches completed and the overall match score standing at 5 -5, all eyes turned to John Williams from Stoke and Kevin

Stoke by Nayland team and their caddies before the match against Braintree.

Smith from Braintree. John had held a slender one hole lead for much of the back nine and came to the 18th with that lead intact. Kevin was unable to win the hole and take the match to a nail biting play-off, John winning the hole and his match 2 up. The overall score was 6 – 5 win for Stoke. The match was played in an excellent spirit and was enjoyed by all.

Titleist Supports Juniors as Official Golf Ball Partner to The Golf Foundation

A

s a long-term supporter of the charity, which encourages young people from all backgrounds and abilities to ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in the game, Titleist will provide golf balls to be used in major promotional and fundraising activities, as well as during development programmes at golf clubs, driving ranges, community projects and schools across the country (for example, a pack of three Titleist golf balls will be given to the 1,500 youngsters taking part in the GolfSixes League this year).

The Golf Foundation offers first golf experiences to children in schools and communities and then seeks to provide playing opportunities at local golf clubs and “Skills for Life, a healthy life, and a game for life.” The

HSBC Golf Roots programme reaches 500,000 youngsters every year with the goal of helping 50,000 to enjoy golf at a golf club, creating 15,000 additional regular golfers annually. As well as providing its industry-leading golf balls for Foundation activities, Titleist has also helped the Golf Foundation team to inspire the next generation of players.Young stars of the future have been introduced to Titleist and FJ Brand Ambassadors such as Rafa Cabrera Bello, Matthew Southgate, Paul Dunne and Andrew ‘Beef ’ Johnston, during recent Open Championships. During Open Championship week, Titleist has also provided eight Scotty Cameron putters to winners of a putting challenge in the ‘R&A Swing Zone’; last year attracting nearly 4,000 entrants, of which an estimated 70% were children. Brendon Pyle, Chief Executive of the Golf Foundation, said: “The team at Titleist has great vision for the sport and clearly recognises that the need to attract new young players is paramount for the future. We are thrilled that Titleist wishes to continue its support of this charity. “Through this partnership, our team can present Titleist golf balls bearing the Golf Foundation logo to young players, volunteers and the many different types of people and organisations we might work with, so this remains a great association for us which we appreciate fully.” www.titleist.co.uk

Sara and Claire Take the Honours S ara Cock and Claire Hebden were the winners in Colchester Golf Club first ladies competition able to be played this year. After nearly four months of weather restricted playing time the qualifying competition for the ladies MacKenzie Foursomes provided a strong field for the eight pairs that go into the knockout stages. Cock and Hebden belying their 30 handicaps returned a score of nett 80 on a course with no run on the ball making it play very long. Philippa Deman and Heather Dennis playing off 15, half their combined handicaps, mirrored their score, loosing out in the countback. Third spot was taken by Alison Clare and Janet Austin (22½) just half a shot behind them with Maureen Devenish and Hayley Joel (20½) in fourth on 81½. Other qualifiers were Beverley Parker and Pip Macauley, Cathy Burchell and Julie Dicks, Katie Johnson and Bridgett Whitworth and Hannah Butcher and Daphne Bloomfield.

Claire Hebden and Sara Cock lead qualifiers in the MacKenzie Foursomes.

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

A

t time of writing this update (26/04), the Round Two matches are well under way and should largely be complete by the time this edition of the great Essex Golfer magazine drops on your doormat. A good proportion of clubs have managed to get both their games in, and so making very good inroads into their League positions. Clubs like Burnham on Crouch, Stapleford Abbotts and Forrester have played and won both of their matches so are positioned well as leaders of their Divisions (with 4 points), and Braintree are not far behind with 3 League points. But there is still a long way to go, and the clubs noted above can easily be overcome by other clubs in the League – with our competition condition that the winner and runner up of each Division goes through to the knock-out phase, it is not absolutely necessary to win all your matches. For all matches, your Jubilee organiser/Captains are most welcome to be using our NEW online scorecard facility for submitting results to the Committee – to access, and for help in completing, please go to www.jubileecup.com/scorex/ Especial note goes to the Wanstead Golf Club team who overcame West Essex at home by winning all but a single half point in Round One – 8.5 to 0.5 pts. Likewise, in Round 2, some solid looking results from West Essex against Canons Brook, and Langdon Hills against Maldon – however, if my experience with this competition has shown me well, the numbers of the results often belie the closeness of how things could have finished up. The Jubilee Cup website holds the full details of all 4BBB and Singles games if you wish to delve down to individual levels. Follow this link www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/draw2.htm to see the full results of Round Two which will have completed as you read this by 8th May. RESISTANCE VS CARDIO I

hear on a very regular basis from golfers that they should be doing more cardio and I see too many golfers in the gym on the cross trainer, rower and treadmill for hours on end. For me this is a complete waste of precious training time and practice time! Most golfers are getting a fair bit of cardio from the actual golf course and when they are not 20 minutes of interval training 2 times a week is sufficient for fitness and stamina. The rest of the gym time should be spent in the weights/mat area room developing postural endurance, core and strength and stability into power. Resistance work coupled with flexibility, posture and core work builds a strong, stable unit to play golf, in turn producing a much better golfer. No resistance training and just cardio in my experience produces a very injury prone sportsman with weak muscles and a pretty exhausted

body. There is a place for cardio ... high intensity interval training, in the form of sprints or interval training on the rower, stepper, cross trainer. When resistance training try to stick to big functional movement patterns for optimal functional carryover. For example, squat, lunge, push, pull and twist. Include all these movements and you will see your golf improve tremendously. Change your cardio to interval training ... try rowing 2 minutes moderate pace/level then 1 minute as hard and fast as you can go and repeat pattern for 20 minutes max. It’s the perfect time to hit the gym and start practicing your functional movement patterns and interval training with the weather so bad, seek out a good personal trainer and get going!

Cheshunt Salver 2018

ESSEX U18/16 v HERTFORDSHIRE U18/16 Essendon Country Club, Hertfordshire – Tuesday 3rd April 2018

I

Callum Newton.

magine if you will the wettest golf course you have ever played and make it just a little wetter for that was the condition under foot at Essendon on 3 April. All credit must go to the Essendon Club for making any golf possible albeit on forward tees, but with no temporary greens. In any other circumstances the course would most certainly have been closed. It was with some good fortune that throughout only one brief if heavy shower added further inconvenience to the day’s competition and as can be seen from the result sheet this was a very close affair with eight matches going to the 18th green. At lunch after the morning foursomes Essex held a narrow one point advantage over the hosts, to which they added a further point on completion of the afternoon singles. Player of the day was the Essex Captain Callum Newton whose 8-7 disposal of his opponent was nothing less than comprehensive. Although Essex emerged as winners of this year’s Cheshunt Salver by 10 to 8 the truth is that the match was even closer than that. Our thanks go to Chris James and his Hertfordshire colleagues for running the day so smoothly and particularly to Essendon Country Club for making the course available and playable. Match Report

ESSEX AMATEURS v ESSEX PROFESSIONALS Frinton Golf Club – Thursday 5th April 2018

A

fter several days of heavy rain prior to this match, all the courses in Essex were effectively closed with waterlogged greens and fairways. Frinton being no exception even up to the day before the game was due to take place. Fortunately the rain abated and with great efforts from Frinton head Green keeper Sam Cook and his team the course was presented in a surprisingly good playing condition with all the pins on the greens and all tees in play. Both sides had their stars on display with the likes of England amateur Champion Todd Clements, ex European tour players Lloyd Kennedy and Robbie Coles amongst others. The top match of Clements and Taylor Carter against PGA Order of Merit winner Jason Levermore and Andy Pestell set the tone of the morning in a very close match with the amateur pair coming out with a 2 hole win and with County Captain Andy May with Will Boniface victorious over PGA captain Mark Talbott and Joe Ellis, the Ams had a 2 nil lead. This was not to last however as the Tour experience of Kennedy and Coles was evident in their 4&3 win over Ricky Lee and Ben Tobin and with a win and half in the other two games, the match was finely poised at 2 ½ points each at Lunch. The afternoon singles were very much nip and tuck for the first 5 games with the Pro’s edging this 3 to 2 . Fine wins for Levermore, Talbott and Kennedy. However, the back end of the field showed the talent of the current crop of Essex Amateurs with the Pro’s only taking another half point out of the 5 available. Special mention to Jamie Richards in coming back from 4 down with 5 to play in beating Essex Golf Union’s own James Gurry down the 18th. Afternoon score of 6 ½ to 3 ½ in favour of the Amateurs and an overall victory of 9pts to 6. Tremendous thanks to Frinton Golf Club members for allowing the use of their course yet again and special mention to Peter Taggart and his catering team, Sam Cook and past Club Captain David Joshua for their hospitality and enthusiasm. espite the wet start to the year, Maylands were able to present their course in a fantastic condition for the match versus the Bedfordshire U16 team. There were lots of comments regarding the great condition the greens were in given the fact that we had had such a huge amount of rainfall over the weeks leading up to the match. U16 Team Maylands Go The match was played in great spirits as always, with Bedfordshire lf Club ESSEX v BE DFORDSHI RE taking the lunch time lead by a point, 2½ to Essex’s 1½ from the Bedfordshire Foursomes play. Essex’s Second pairing Charlie Dodds and Beau Essex Brunning managed a 2&1 win whilst Harry Wood and Alex Maplesden managed a half in the third match to prevent a 3-1 deficit going into the afternoon singles. A hot start by Essex saw the first four matches bring home a point Bedfordshire to make the score 5½ to 2½ now in favour of Essex. Teddy Papple Essex won 3 & 1, Lewis Wright won 4 & 3 and both Charlie Dodds and Harry Wood managed 2 & 1 victories. The next two matches went to Bedfordshire which meant the overall match was now potentially on the next match in. Thomas Vass clinched it with a 2UP victory meaning Max Toombs half at the tail end of the field was sufficient to win 7 – 5 in total and a fantastic singles display following a slow Bedfordshir e morning start. Essex Thank you to Maylands golf club for hosting the match, as always their hospitality was impeccable and thank you to Bedfordshire U16 team for playing a well fought match in such great spirit. Frinton Golf Club – 14th April Qualifier 21st & 22nd April Matchplay Finals

T

he Essex Golf Union’s first Championship of the season saw 78 competitors play 36 holes of golf over a very challenging and well-presented Frinton Golf Course, despite the wet weather of recent weeks. Only 16 places were on offer for the Matchplay Finals that took place on the 21st & 22nd April also hosted by Frinton. The 78 competitors were fortunate to find Frinton in an unusually calm state for the Qualifying stage of the competition. The flag sticks remained relatively still for most of the day, with the wind lifting a little in the afternoon which made for some tricky club choices after the morning’s play. The morning of qualifying saw 6 players break par, Barry Medcalf (The Rayleigh Club) was lowest and led at the half way stage with a three under par 68. Just one back on 69 were William Percival (Orsett), Joe Tatam (Brentwood) and last year’s winner, Jay Beisser (Basildon). On one under par 70 at lunch were Ricky Lee (Boyce Hill) & Brandon Meads (Chelmsford). The afternoon was reported to be slightly tougher Seven of the as the wind showed signs of increasing but certainly Qualifiers with not to Frinton’s usual standards. Despite the stiff Frintons Captain. breeze, there were another six scores under par. The three players that made back to back par breaking rounds finished 1st 2nd and 3rd overall respectively, Jay Beisser, Ricky Lee & Joe Tatam. A great display of golf so early in the season. The top 16 places were filled with players 3 over par or better for the 36 holes. Nick Tedder-Ward (Clacton) managed a 70 (-1) in the afternoon to finish 8th overall on 144 (+2). Also breaking par in the afternoon was Jordan Slater (Harwich & Dovercourt), Jordan was 4 over in the morning but managed to shoot a 70 (-1) in the afternoon to grab the 11th spot in the finals. On the weekend of 21st and 22nd April the qualifiers were set to take part in the knockout phase of the competition, with the feeling that Summer had come at last after a long cold and wet few weeks. Following the mornings play the Quarter finals again

had displays of top quality golf. Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) had a great 5 & 3 victory over Ricky Lee, and Jordan Slater beat Joe Tatam 3 & 2 in the top half of the draw. Then William Percival managed a 1 Up victory over Callum Pipe (Braintree) in a close match, which left Jay Beisser’s 4 & 3 victory over Nick TedderWard to conclude the semi-final line up. In the Sunday morning semi-finals Jordan Slater managed a win over Michael Gilbert 2 & 1 to book his place in the final. Meanwhile Jay Beisser was several under par when he closed out his match against William Percival 6 & 4. The two finalists took to the first tee on the Sunday afternoon both with a great chance to win the title, Jay attempting to defend the Keating Trophy and Jordan trying to win his first. Jordan made a good start and went 2 Up through 3 holes. Jay won the 6th with a par but Jordan immediately hit back with a birdie at the 7th. Jay Finalists with Brian Collins (EGU birdied the 9th to get it back to just 1 hole at the turn and then President Elect). also won the 11th to take the match back to all square with just 7 holes left to play. A trio of threes from Jordan through holes 12, 13 and 14 saw Jordan gain a two-up lead, as Jay failed to hole his birdie attempts at each hole. Jordan then closed out the match with a birdie on the 17th to win 3 & 1. Jordan looked thrilled to win The Keating Trophy, congratulations Jordan on a fantastic performance and well done Jay, having made a valiant attempt to defend the title he won last year. Our thanks go to Frinton Golf Club for hosting a fantastic championship at a time when a lot of courses would have struggled to allow play to take place on the first weekend. Well done to your green keeping staff for making the course available and presenting the course in such a great way. We next head to Thorpe Hall Golf Club on the 25th May for Jordan Slater being presented with the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy and Colts Championship. the Trophy.

hot Scope Technologies has released a new firmware update with enhanced features to improve the V2 watch, which combines its industry-leading automatic performance tracking with advanced GPS technology. V2 will now provide golfers with dynamic front and back distances to bunkers and water hazards in addition to its existing front, middle and back of the green GPS distances. In addition to the improved GPS technology, Shot Scope has relaunched the Performance Dashboard as part of the update, which allows golfers to review their automatically tracked performance data on an interactive and immersive platform. Shot Scope’s Performance Dashboard features great statistics such as your “Never up, Never in” putting percentage and the breakdown of your short-game shots which make it into the “red zone”, enhancing functionality to help golfers understand their weaknesses. New Advanced Penalty Identification allows golfers to classify a penalty on their watch during the round, reducing time spent editing scores post-round. Users can also flag a provisional shot, which starts a fiveminute timer to search for a lost ball. “We listened closely to our V1 users and refining our Performance Dashboard to provide more in-depth performance analytics is a crucial aspect of helping golfers to understand their performance and achieve their goals.” The Shot Scope V2 watch is available instore and online at www.shotscope.com

Eastons Annual Manor of Groves Visit O

ur 2018 Tour finally got going only a month later then usual but what a day it was with some glorious weather which made a massive change to how it has been lately. The day started with everyone meeting in the Clubhouse for 10:30am to sit down for an excellent full English breakfast. We had 18 of our member attending this one which is a pretty good turnout for the first one of 2018. The first tee off was 11:30 so some of our member’s used it wisely to get some last minute practising in either on the putting green or in the practise net. Thankfully we were allowed to use trolleys and buggies which was a relieve for some of our older member’s, the course was very wet in some area’s after the recent downpour’s of rain which made the long holes seem even longer than usual and was hard going on the soft terrain which did result in some low score’s overall. However Bertie Napier came in 3rd with 30 points playing off 26. Nando Braz pinched second with 35 points playing off 26. James Loeber took top spot scoring 36 points playing off 12 to win the day and also took possession of The Phil Myhill Memorial tankard which was named in honour of one of members who tragically passed away a few years ago, as well as the proud possessor of a huge Sombrero that is new this year which our overall winner of last year Nigel brought back from Mexico it will be passed to each winner of the day each month. No doubt a proper bandit will win it soon! The Phil Myhill Tankard is usually played for in March ahead of the annual prize giving event which would have been at Forrester Park but due to the crazy weather we experienced in March it was cancelled & has been rescheduled for November. Prizes for the day comp’s are awarded at the end of the round before anyone has to depart if they are not attending the dinner afterwards. We hold longest drive and nearest pin comp’s each month and those winner’s on the day were:-

Longest drive was won by Nigel Mason and nearest the pin was won by John Loeber. After a little lubricating and banter we headed to our annual dinner and drinks bonanza which is held each year at – The New Mexico restaurant in Sawbridgeworth, as always it was another great evening with great company and some terrific food, the presentation of prizes for last year are given out before deserts and too much liquid is consumed. A massive thank you goes to Nando and his team at the New Mexico for having us again. 2018 has started with a good one and looking forward to our next round in May at The Cannon’s Brook in Harlow, we have not played there before, so we are really looking to another new course.

Winner James Loeber with runner up’s Barry Simkins (left) who finished 3rd and Malcolm Gomez (right) who finished 2nd.

IS YOUR MIND GETTING IN THE WAY OF YOUR GOLF?

L

et’s go back nearly a year ago and listen to Sergio Garcia at The Masters after his victory. He had got into a mindset that made him feel he would never win a Major Golf Championship, but a year or two before that amazing victory, he started to realise he could win one of the Big 4. So think about this! Sergio was teeing it up in either The Masters, US Open, Open Championship or USPGA believing he would not Win that Tournament! Sounds crazy doesn't it that one of the Worlds best players mentally thinks that he cannot Win against guys he can beat in a Regular Tour event! Just think about this for a moment and I bet that every single person reading this has had a thought that they will miss a short putt, thin a chip, shank a pitch shot, leave the ball in the bunker, drive the ball out of bounds etc etc. So mentally we are going to create what inevitably is going to happen or do an action to prevent it, which in turn makes us play a poor shot. What should we do? Mentally we need to prepare ourselves to believe that we will play a good shot and create the correct processes, but we also do require reasonable technique. It's an understanding that we require to feel we can allow our technique to just work, because we know it can and mentally picture the shot and believe in its outcome. We can't have one without the other. They work as a team! Focus your attention on what you want from your golf and for each shot that you play. This places attention and focus on what you want rather than what you don't want. If you are struggling mentally, I can now help those processes in developing a better understanding to help work with your technique. By changing your mindset like Sergio, success in whatever form is only around the corner. This April we saw Patrick Reed use his Mindset that we see in The Ryder Cup to Win The Masters and saw the week before when Mr

Ryder Cup himself Ian Poulter Won to secure a place at Augusta. Just proves how the Mind can make a player play differently depending on the circumstances ie to either play great or get overwhelmed by the situation. Congratulations to Todd Clements Winning Euro Nations Individual and being part of the Winning England Team as well. A Great Double!

The Mind Factor #YOURGOLFCHALLENGE If you are interested I will be running a Mind Factor evening #YOURGOLFCHALLENGE at The Essex Golf and Country Club on Wednesday 9th May from 7pm till 9pm with Karl Morris Performance Coach who has worked with Six Major Winners, including Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen. evening and one lucky winner will receive a gift from Karl and will get their entry refunded. A £1 from your entry will go to Prostate Cancer UK, so please make the event as not only will you be helping yourself, you will be helping many others as well.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE MASTERS?

E

ach year for the first week in April practically every golfer sits mesmerised by the beauty and tranquillity of Augusta National, waiting in anticipation for the action to unfold revealing the numerous twists and turns for which the event is famous. This year did not fail to disappoint … the brilliant run of Jordan Spieth who incidentally has

been coached by his childhood coach since starting the game, just fell short. Rickie Fowler’s silky smooth putting stroke a close runner up to the unflappable brilliance of Patrick Reed. It was during one of my Junior Saturday Coaching classes I decided to talk about the Masters namely the ever popular 2017 winner Sergio Garcia.

My fantastic group of young girls and boys aged between 5-9 years asked and answered questions associated with the Tournament in particular the notoriously awkward 12th hole which becomes a focal point every year come Sunday evening on the back 9. The topic of “pressure” was mentioned which I simplified to suit the young players in front of me. The fact Sergio was victorious last year added no weight to his 2018 campaign due to a score of 13 on the par 5 15th. This demonstrated to my young juniors coping with disappointment is part of the journey to continued success. The media sited the final round as the Rory and Reed showdown but as we know golf does not always work like that. I am sure we can all relate to a past event or match where the focus is on the favourite. Having many years of experience coaching young players starting the game through to Elite level, I am concerned with the “pressures” placed on results and the enormous publicity very often at a young age. It is interesting watching how this can be hugely detrimental with a drop off in performance and interest in the game in the teenage years and beyond. This is an area which fascinates me and one which I am keen to educate within my Junior sessions at an early age to limit the likelihood of this happening. Here are a few areas which our young golfers can learn from n We need “luck” to win events, Reed’s ball somehow clinging to the slippery slope on the par 5 13th avoiding the water hazard n Self Belief- Spieth’s amazing comeback “Anything is possible” n Resolve – Reed under enormous pressure n Expectation levels are hard to cope with at any level of player – Mcilroy was the firm favourite However the most satisfying word for me came from one of my 8 year olds, when he said “he learnt from my Coaching session “Perseverance” was important in golf. We have to accept some days even our game plans don’t work out as expected but keep trying whatever the situation. Coaching is not all about technical input but playing the game.

Charity Golf Day in Aid of Orchid (The Male Cancer Charity)

O

n Tuesday 10th April 14 golfers turned up at Little Channels Golf Club to raise funds for Orchid, the male cancer charity. The event was organised by David Crowe (a member of Crondon Park Golf Club) who is riding 100 miles this July in the Ride London-Surrey bike ride to raise funds for Orchid. David, who suffered from cancer when in his 30s, and is both a father and grandfather, was delighted that the golf day raised £225 for this excellent cause. The event was won by Judy Wybrow of Chelmsford Golf Club who scored an impressive 41 points with Jim Fuller (Stockbrook Manor) coming in second with 37 points.

The charity golf day took place during the tenth Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week which ran from the 9th-15th April 2018. This annual campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness of prostate, penile and testicular cancer and provide practical advice, support, and information on the detection, diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. If you would like to learn more about the work of Orchid please visit www.orchid-cancer.org.uk If you would like to sponsor David on his bike ride to raise funds for Orchid you can do so by visiting uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DavidCrowe55. Every donation makes a difference.

he AGM at Regiment Way Golf Club was well supported with the majority of the members turning up early for the presentation of the cheque to the Captain’s Charity for 2017/18. Essex Golfer is a very good way to reach out to your target audience. We have been delighted with the service and coverage received over the past 4 years.

BASI LDON GOLF COU RSE

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER
