appointment of their Captain and committee for the next 12 months. During the morning round, Stan Baker, a regular in the senior competitions, hit a high trajectory 9 iron from the tee on the par 3, 7th hole. Stan and his two playing colleagues watched all three of their balls role down the slope onto the green. On reaching the green they could only see 2 balls. Stan checked the hole and was delighted to see his ball nestling in the bottom of the cup. He was even more delighted to pick up the ÂŁ100 pot that the Epping Seniors keep for such achievements. Well done Stan, the Seniors are all looking forward your round at the bar.

NEW DAWN AT COLCHESTER
Captain Mike Withers (centre) opens the new practice range alongside John Peddelty (left) and Mick Lambert (right).
C
olchester Golf Club members can have no excuse for poor golf now, after the opening of a £30,000 brand new, all-weather practice range. The project is a significant investment to improve golfing facilities in the town, meaning golfers can work on their game throughout the year, come rain, hail or shine. Colchester’s board decided to invest in the eight-bay driving range to boost the club’s already impressive practice facilities after listening to suggestions from members. Work on the Huxley, all-weather range started in August and the range was officially opened on October 13 by Club Captain Mike Withers – watched by a host of club members. Withers said: “This is a major commitment by the club and one we should all be proud of. “The all-weather driving range is just the start. We plan to look at short-game areas next, with target greens being built, our aim being to give members, and would-be members, the first-class practice areas they deserve.” Colchester’s new bays are sited close to the club’s existing grass practice bays, a number of which are still available for members to practice on. The club also boasts a high-tech, indoor swing
studio, with lessons available from professionals Chris Cutchie and Mark Baker, a nine-hole Academy course and a further short-game practice ground. Some of the first to make use of the new driving bays were the club’s juniors, including members of the Youth team who won the Essex Scratch Shield last month – Colchester’s first success in the competition since 2001. Said Mike Withers, who was joined at the opening by Ipswich Town stalwarts Mick Lambert and John Peddelty: “The new driving bays are a much-needed improvement and will be a great benefit to members. They will also be an added attraction for golfers looking to join our club in the future. “After listening to member feedback from last year’s survey, this is just one of the many forwardthinking proposals developed through our evolving business plan, as part of a structured ongoing development of our club.” Anyone interested in joining Colchester Golf Club or taking up trial membership for just £150 for two months should contact the club office on 01206 853396 or email assistant@colchestergolfclub.com -8-

SHARP SHOOTERS NEW EVENT
S
harp Shooters Golf World Stansted, Rivenhall Oaks and Colne Valley each had a team of 12 high handicaps 36 or above, or non handicap junior golfers. they played 2 matches at each venue. This event is new to Essex and has proved to be a real success with all competitors playing from junior tees over 6 holes. Throughout the summer the points were close and the leaderboard changed after each match.
The final was held at Rivenhall Oaks by Professional Sam Vidler and the three teams played fantastically. SharpShooters Golf World Stansted took gold in the end, but all the teams and parents should be congratulated on not only their golf but their sportsmanship and team spirit. We are all really keen to get going with the next league ... watch this space!

AGM’S AT COLCHESTER GC
THIRD TIME LUCKY FOR NICKY
olchester Golf Club held its AGM’S last heydon Bois Golf Club Nicky George week where Jim Wilkinson was voted in as discovered the Midas touch on Crondon C T the Captain for 2019 with Tim Logan to act as his Park's slick greens to capture the Essex Ladies Vice-Captain for the year. Kevin Prince was voted in as the next Vet’sCaptain. At the Ladies’ AGM Maureen Devenish was voted in as the Ladies’ Captain and her position as an Officer of the Club and Ladies’ Captain was confirmed by a vote of the members. Her ViceCaptain for the year is Janet Austin.
Gold Division Match Play title last week. In a closely fought contest Nicky triumphed 2 and 1 against fellow finalist Maria Williams of Rochford Hundred.
Jim Wilkinson Colchester Golf Club's Captain for 2018-19.
Presentation of a cheque for £2455 to Zach Whitter of the St Helena Hospice from the outgoing Ladies' Captain Renate Clarke.
It proved to be third time lucky for Theydon stalwart Nicky who had suffered first round exits in the two previous years. Nicky, 52, revealed: “I have been playing inconsistently all year and I did not think it was going to be my day when I fired my first tee shot into a ditch. “But my putting touch returned on the greens and that was my saviour.” Nicky became the first Theydon Bois lady member to win the County's Gold Match Play title in the modern era. She added: “After losing in the first round twice in previous years I am thrilled to have won the Final and it helped enormously to have my friend Janna Pratt on my bag.”

W
ho said you have to stand parallel to the target line when putting, during the course of golf history some of the best putters did the opposite. Lee Trevino set up open ie stance pointing to the left. The great Bobby Lock the opposite set up closed ie stance line pointing to the right. Both of these players found their own square, the most comfortable way for them to move the putter up and down a reasonably straight line. To find your own square try this simple exercise that I am doing in Picture 1. Place two clubs on the ground pointing towards a hole with enough room in between them to swing the putter up and down.
Picture 2 start with your stance pointing to the left and try some swings, then keep moving round past parallel Picture 3 to closed pointing to the right. Somewhere on this spectrum you will find where you are most comfortable and where you can most easily move the putter back and forth on a reasonably straight line. Why not join me next spring at Penina in the Algarve at one of my coaching holidays details on garypikegolf.com

When Playing It Safe Can Actually Hurt Your Game … O
K, you will need to stay with me on this one and hopefully by the end you will understand what I mean … For a moment forget you own golf game, step back and let’s take a look at the golf equipment industry. For the purpose of this exercise let’s say a golfer wants to buy a new driver – so they walk into the store and are confronted by a selection of drivers that all look like they may do the job. There’s some nice colours, a few brands that are used by their favourite players and a few special deals to catch the golfer’s eye. Taking a closer look our golfer can see that actually quite a few of the shafts are the same..probably because it’s a very good shaft and is popular on the TV…maybe? So, pulling a few from the racks our golfer lines the selection of drivers up but then notices that actually the lengths of the clubs are very similar OK, that’s obviously the optimum length for that club to play at…maybe? How about loft, well 9.5˚, 10.5˚ & 12˚/13˚ seems popular, in fact not much else to choose from so must the perfect lofts for all golfers … maybe? How about the grip…our golfer would quite like to feel a few different grip sizes…oh, only one there – probably the best size for all golfers … maybe? So, in conclusion it boils down to the head being the biggest differentiator between the clubs, wow that’s got some work to do, three elements
to the golf club and only one that really shows a lot of difference. Before we go any further I am not trying to knock golf stores, it’s not their fault. It’s the industry itself – it does not like ‘outliers’ as these are difficult to cater for from a mass produced product perspective. A couple of examples are ladies left handed or clubs for a teenager are not easy to find (just for the record, in general, a 14 year old boy is not a good match for ladies clubs). So what happens? Well, the ‘outliers’ have to fit into what everybody else needs - bit like someone turning up at a wedding with trousers 4” too long and dragging on the floor as the store did not have the correct leg length - you would get them altered … right? In my opinion it’s all too ‘safe’, sticking to the masses and not thinking outside the box as to what people need. Many golfers spend fortunes on a membership, taking lessons, the ‘fancy’ clothing but then make uneducated decisions on what they are going to hit the ball with … “I don’t care what it is as long as it’s not pink” … yep, I’ve actually heard that. If you take one thing away from this article ask yourself the following question before changing your clubs: With all the variables of physique, swing and club delivery am I really part of the masses? Oh, and don’t forget you do not know what that criteria is.

Ufford Park Ryder Cup, guest of honour Mary Moore with winning team captain John Pope.
he Ufford Park Tuesday Club Seniors held their very own local version of the Ryder Cup on Friday the 5 October 2018. The guest of honour at the tournament was Mary Moore the granddaughter of the great Samuel Ryder, who founded the bi-annual competition between the USA and Europe in 1927. Ufford Park’s Ryder Cup was a friendly competition and featured a Suffolk Bred Team playing against a Rest of the World Team. The format of the competition followed the real Ryder Cup formats; Fourball, Foursomes and Singles. The competition was close fought and entertaining, with the 2016 champions, the Rest of the World Team taking the lead and winning the trophy as the Suffolk Bred Team came in from behind to draw level after the Singles competition. Hopefully 2020 will be the Suffolk Bred Team’s winning year.

DO YOU STRUGGLE WHEN PLAYING MEDAL COMPETITIONS.
STOP THE GIMME RIGHT NOW! hen playing medal play, you have to finish out every hole. When you miss that first 2 W footer, how does it make you feel? Numerous emotions rise up, anger, frustration or embarrassment to name a few. How does that then affect your performance? I often hear, golf is a mental game, it’s the 6 inches between your ears, is so often quoted. What could that really mean, you are mentally inept if you can’t put a round of golf together or that you are unable to control your motor skills What if your skill level is not as good as you believe. Could it be the regular format you play, just isn’t helping your on course performance, stableford being the usual and the aforementioned, GIMME could be large contributing factors. WHY DO WE PRACTICE? Whether it’s T Shot’s, pitching or knocking in that 3 footer, we practise to prove to our brain or subconscious we are accomplished in that skill,
therefore we can succeed when it matters. If you never practice finishing out then how good are you? Wishful thinking is not good grounds to base an opinion on. Help your friends, playing partner and opponent, by never giving another putt. If you find yourself upset at being asked to putt out, then you need to ask yourself why? In medal play, you get to see your true competitive ability level. I am not suggesting you should only play medal play, what I am saying is you need to understand why you struggle to get round when you play the medal format. Many people give up, get angry or feel so frustrated. My mission is to create a golfing environment to get the best out of your experience whilst on the course. If this makes sense and you would like to find out more by starting to understand the real game of golf, FINISH OUT EVERY PUTT. STOP GIMME’S and become a more accomplished player. - 26 -

CAN PUTTER HEADS AND SHAFTS REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO YOUR PUTTING?
H
ello Golfers, I want to share with you some information that I am getting from my Quintic Ball Roll Launch Monitor. Just recently I have seen golfers of all standards testing out their Putting Strokes and Putters on this fabulous machinery. The results have been quite astounding, especially one young golfer off a plus handicap where the putter head was massively affecting path. By testing another putter the path dramatically improved. Without path, you could of assumed that face was an issue, but path was affecting the face and the Putter was affecting the path. This proving that the Putter is not correct for this player, the player mentioned is Brandon Meads. With other parameters such as Face Rotation and Twist, to do with the putter head, you can find that this head either suits or doesn’t suit the player. Hence, it may feel great and look great, but does it work great? The other notable point is the shaft. A lot of people would ask, ‘How can a shaft effect the swing at such a low speed?’ Well, just think this for a moment. The Putter length could be
between 2 and a half to 3 feet. However, a Driver length is just under 4 feet and everyone would agree that people need different flex, weight, torque etc. It is still basically a stick, but people believe a Putter is just a Putter, but it’s definitely not. On the Quintic, you can see if the shaft affects the Putter head from impact and on the follow through. This I see on a consistent basis. Impact with the ball will always cause a vibration. Not necessarily do Putters get fitted with the correct shaft for you and so at contact this can effect the result of the ball. Just remember this – The more stable the shaft for you, the more stable your putter will be at impact and follow through. Getting the correct head and shaft by buying off the rack will be fortunate. The only correct way to test if the Putter works for you, is to see the results using Quintic due to not only Putter but the result of the ball. If the head works well and the shaft is stable, you have an opportunity to Putt better and who wants that for their golf?

anet Tebutt claimed her top spot in a threeway tie at Colchester Golf Club Ladies Autumn Meeting. Twenty-six handicapper Tebutt had got the nod over Shelley Persent and Carol Irvine after the count back with her nineteen points on the back nine, including a nervous bogey three on the last, sneeking ahead of their eighteens. All three players had final scores of 38 points. Janet Tebutt with Ladies' Captain Renate Clark.

Trophy Day. The day sponsored by Quest Motors from Chelmsford had cash prizes on all par 3’s except the 17th where there was a £15k car for a hole in one. Peter Collins organiser said this was the second time we had such a competition, which involved a car, and cash prizes for a hole in one. Peter said “I had commented whilst playing wouldn’t it be great if someone got a hole in one today, only to find when I got into the clubhouse I heard the great news”. The Seniors Captain Brendan Osborne was also a happy man as George instead of the usual round of celebratory drinks promised a donation to Brendan’s charity’s of Motor Neurone Disease and St Luke’s Hospice. Brendan said this is generally an alternate option for any one getting a hole in one at Crondon Park GC so I’m very grateful. George said “I’m a happy man, but also congratulate the days winner Keith Nichols who won £100”. - 30 -

The Winter Blues inter for most golfers bring the blues. Off season, golf courses unplayable, unpleasant W weather conditions and missing their hobby/sport. There is a very good way of avoiding or improving these winter blues by hitting the gym. Exercise releases endorphins, a hormone that makes you happy! Also the gym can keep you very busy whilst there is less golf going on. I am a huge advocate of golfers throwing themselves into the gym in the late autumn and winter as this is the only time in the golfing calendar is empty and there is real time to make progress in areas such as posture, core, stability, strength and for me, most importantly, flexibility. A question I am asked frequently by golfers is “what do i do in the gym?” That question to me is an absolutely minefield. Every golfer is different and needs to use the gym in different ways. I would absolutely recommend flexibility to be the number 1 goal. A whole spring/summer playing copious amounts of golf leaves golfers muscles tight and generally out of balance. Once some flexibility or balance has been achieved I would then say the core/posture needs attention, into strength and then finally into power right in time for the golfing season to start all over again. I have written a mini flexibility programme for you all to get you started in the gym below, next month I will cover core/posture and give you a mini programme to follow to start you off there too. FLEXIBILTY Below is an example and a very basic start to balancing the body and achieving flexibility
STRETCH
DURATION
Hamstrings
1 minute
Spinal Rotation
1 minute
LYING HAMSTRING STRETCH
Lie on you back with one leg bent and one straight. Loop a belt or towel around the foot of the straight leg. Use your arms to pull the leg up until a stretch is felt behind the knee – keeping the leg straight. This should be firm, but not painful. Be sure to relax your neck and shoulders, and keep breathing as you do this stretch. Corrective streching ... 1 minute holds. SPINAL ROTATION
Lie on your back and bring knees up toward your chest so your body is positioned as if you’re sitting in a chair.Your knees and hips should be bent at 90-degree angles. Now, place the palms of your hands flat on the floor. Bring your knees down to the right side. Lift your left hip up but keep your shoulders touching the floor. repeat both sides. Always stretch the tight side x 2, for example, if your right side hurts more to stretch, stretch it 2 x rather than 1 x on the left. You are aiming to balance the body, not keep the flexibility issues the same, so always make sure you are stretching the tighter side more than the not so tight side. Any questions regarding flexibility please ask ... I am more than happy to help and look out for my next article next month to start learning how to strengthen your core/posture. - 32 -

PLAYGOLF NEWS
A
large field took part in the recent major competition, the sponsored GM Open held at Playgolf Colchester. The event saw some superb golf and more importantly, raised £550 for the Royal Association for Deaf People, one of seven charities being supported by Playgolf this year.
The winning team consisted of Sue Patrick, Judith Peeling, Liz Schultz, Paula Smith, Captain Pauline Jordan, Rosalind Scott, Sally Pettitt Jeanette Shea, Sue Wotton and Janet Sexton.
Sponsor Gavin Miklaucich (right) and Club Captain Rob Cornish recently presented a cheque for the charity money raised to Katie Girling-Weeks, Fundraising Manager for the RAD.
Jeanette Shea and Rosalind Scott turned up trumps for the Captains team, wining 2&1 to see off Linda Dundon and Carol Farrance. Final result saw the Captins team win four – two. Ann Longman was the winner in her category at the Essex County Seniors Open, held at Ballards Gore Golf Club.
LADIES The Playgolf ladies-section staged their ninth annual mini-Solheim Cup competition. The Lady Captain, Pauline Jordan picked a team to go up against a Vice Captain’s team representing Lucy Sadler. The matchplay format consisted of two singles two foursomes and two four balls. Jordan and Sadler led the way with the first point of the day going to Jordan. Each team won one singles match and one Foursomes leaving the 2 Four ball matches to decide the winners. Fourball number one went in favour of the Captain’s team leaving the last match to decide the day. After a very closely fought match,
Lucy Sadler and Paula Smith progressed to the final of the Yonek Tour Ladies’ Pairs Championship, where they very proudly took sixth place overall.

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
STOKE BY NAYLAND BECOME THE 2018 JUBILEE CUP CHAMPIONS!
Stoke by Nayland.
D
efeating Warley Park, Stoke by Nayland successfully won to the top spot on 24th September 2018, and playing at Crondon Park Golf Club. In equal measure, commiserations to the runner ups, and a hardy well done to Chris William’s successful team. Commiserations therefore to Warley Park who were only defeated 6.5 to 2.5 winning points, and in a game which (as usual) really could have gone anyway as we watched it unfold in the afternoon of the 24th . Seen on the left is Jubilee Cup Chairman on the left, and winning captain Chris Williams receiving the Jubilee Cup Trophy as returning champions in 2018. The final position for the “Road to Crondon Park” can be seen here www.jubileecup.com/matches2018/qsf_sheet_2018.html and the individual Results card showing the matches are shown below also. As always with our final matches, the score really does belie the actual performance of the teams on the day - as officials on the day Neil Mitchell & I, were on hand with our mobile live scoring systems keeping the teams updated. Generally it was fairly steady and equal during the early parts of the match, and only towards the end that SbN started to edge the games, and actually only one big score difference in the 7&6 win for Tim Dickens over Warley’s Dan Bussey. Likewise only a single halved match between - 36 -

ORDER OF MERIT
T
he final also saw the completion of the Order of Merit. Whilst Semi and actual Finalist players clearly have the edge in potentially accumulating more match points, this was by no means a certainty. From a singles perspective, the pretty solid performance of Woolston Manor’s Mazhar Iqbal in earlier rounds saw off any newcomers. We hope to have an image in future showing Maz and his trophy, courtesy of Woolston Captain Zulfi Ali in due course. Seen on the right is Stoke by Nayland’s Byron Long receiving his singles OOM Runner UP trophy from erstwhile Jubilee Chairman Colin Firth. Colin was our Guest of Honour at the Final dinner, thanks to his many years of service, and great to see him in good health following recent escapades! Byron was just half a point behind Maz, and with a better hole difference so turning his one loss even to a halve would have seen him topping the title. Will Stacey from Chigwell was also not very far behind either. Top 10 position for the singles OOM shown below: No 1 3 4 5 8 10 12 13 14 16

CRONDON’S LADIES NEW CAPTAIN
I
t was a good turn out to see the new Crondon Park’s Lady Captain, Amanda Mitchell, on a beautiful, sunny autumnal morning.
As the Amanda’s captain’s charity is Essex Search and Rescue, the theme for the day was “Where’s Wally” and the ladies were all dressed in red and white striped shirts, wearing little bobble hats and round dark rimmed glasses. All the “Wallies” watched as Nicky Iles putt out her year as Lady Captain. She almost holed the 40 foot putt she was given and that wasn't surprising after the form she has shown all summer. Amanda Mitchell (a.k.a. Wally 1) followed this up with a perfect drive off the first, which landed in the middle of the fairway, 153 yards from the tee raising £138 for the charity. Well done Amanda! All the members of Crondon wish Amanda all the best for her year as Lady Captain.
COLCHESTER GOLF CLUB’S JUNIOR OPEN
T
hirteen year old Colchester member Micah Blowers. recorded a nett 63 to win Colchester Golf Club’s Junior Open. There were fifty juniors from twenty two clubs competing on the day, with ten handicapper Blowers romping home three shots better than his nearest rival across all the age groups. Colne Valley’s Jules Hardy (20) was second to Blowers in both the overall nett competition and the U14 age group. Blowers’ handicap received an extra knock when he received an Exceptional Scoring
Reduction and he now plays off 7½. Best gross round of the day was secured by Charlie Dodds (3) from Stockbrook Manor who shot an impressive 71. Colchester juniors took second and third places with Josh Coleman (2) and newly appointed Junior Captain Dan Nicholls (1) both recording gross 72s. Played out on what turned out to be the last of the warm autumn days the Junior Open has now become an established feature on the local golfing calendar.
THE PHOENIX TROPHY
T
he Phoenix Trophy mixed competition has played for the last ten years. Since the fire at the club the Trophy ten years ago. Fifty two club members took part. The trophy was brought by the club captain and Lady captain Bob and Penny Paton at the time of the fire. 1st Jack Farenden – 39pts. 2nd Lynn Passmore – 38pts. With Andy Searles scoring a hole in one on the first. - 40 -

TEED OFF! Sarah coaches at both Three Rivers Golf & Country Club & Stockbrook Manor Golf Club.
are I mention it but we may need to start thinking about some small adjustments to D our golfing schedule with winter round the
corner. By this I mean maybe set aside an extra day at the range working on the areas of our game which will help to elevate your game come Spring time. I am all for winter golf however instead of playing 18 holes when maybe the course conditions don’t necessarily allow, play 9 holes spending 20-30 minutes on the putting green. As you will know my philosophy of “simplistic but effective” is one which I aim for during my coaching delivery. I give my clients drills which can be carried out indoors so here is a putting drill which Michael Breed a former PGA’s National Teacher of the year uses and one which l believe helps to identify the rise angle during the putting stroke. The aim is to putt without disturbing the two strategically placed tee pegs. If the putter head is descending too sharply or too level the tee pegs will move with the goal being a slight rise prior to impact. I hope you enjoy this so no excuse Sarah Bennett putting on those dark evenings. - 42 -

2018 ORDER OF MERIT his year’s race to the Essex Golf Union’s Order of Merit was dominated by Colchester’s Jordan Slater. TFrom start to finish, following his win at Frinton Golf Club for the Keating Trophy, Jordan continued to feature on leader boards throughout the year which secured him the title. When it comes to Order of Merits it tends to reward the most consistent finisher. Jordan finished 2nd at Thorpe Hall in the Colts Championship and Sir Michael Bonnallack Trophy, just one shot behind the winner Jack Dyer. Finishing 7th at Upminster for the County Championship, 5th in The Cliffords Trophy at Stockbrook Manor, 6th in The Boyce Hill Scratch Challenge Bowl and tied 5th in The Threadgill Trophy. This meant that a win at Romford in September would have secured the title with one more counting event remaining at Upminster. Despite Jordan’s best efforts he lost the event on countback but as his nearest competitor, Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford) finished 7th, resulting in a sufficient points gap for Jordan to clinch the title. The Order of Merit Trophy was presented at Frilford Heath Golf Club, where Jordan was part of the victorious County Team, winning the South East Group Final against Hampshire, a fantastic finish to his season witnessed by his team mates and team manager Phil Hulse. Congratulations Jordan on a splendid season.

MULLIS TROPHY Ballards Gore Golf Club – Sunday 30th September 2018
Martin Lack and Andy Hanby being Presented the Mullis Trophy by Ballards Gore’s President Tom Kennedy.
he Mullis Trophy was first played for in 1931 and is traditionally the final competition of the TAsseason. 35 teams representing 28 Clubs set off to play 18 holes in a fourball better ball stableford format, the weather was bright but breezy with warm spells for most of the day. The course was in super condition despite the hot dry summer we have experienced throughout Essex this year. One of the first scores returned was a fantastic 43 points from Basildon Golf Club’s Dean Geeves & Jason Butler. The first group out off the tenth tee saw the duo make 5 three pointers and a four pointer on the 18th hole to go to the top of the leader board early on. Their lead lasted the best part of an hour until Brentwood Golf Club’s George Buckley & Eddie Gilbert returned with 44 points, 8 three pointers saw them take the lead with just a few groups left out on the course. Colchester Golf Club’s pairing of Martin Halls & Danny Simmons managed a very respectable 42 points which saw them on the cusp of the prizes, falling just one point short from original leaders Basildon, who had seen their lead fall away as the afternoon slowly concluded. As Phil Mickelson pulled his tee shot into the water at Paris National to guarantee Europe the Victory in the Ryder Cup, morale was high in the club house. No more so than for The Warren’s Andy Hanby & Martin Lack, the penultimate pairing out on the course returned an amazing score of 47 points. The pair actually dropped a shot making a one pointer on the 4th hole, this was however their only one. 8 three-point holes and a pair of four pointers on holes 5 and 10 meant the pairs 47 points was more than sufficient to win The Mullis Trophy by 3 points. Congratulations to The Warren’s Andy and Martin, who join the Club’s Norman Plum Team in Victory. A good year for the Warren Golf Club. Our thanks go to Ballards Gore Golf Club for their excellent hospitality, lovely after match meal and beautifully presented course. - 46 -

LESLIE WOOD PLATE The Rayleigh Club – Sunday 7th October 2018
O
n Sunday the 7th October Boyce Hill Golf Club played Maylands Golf Club in the final of the Leslie Wood Plate at The Rayleigh Club, near Hullbridge. A perfect day for golf greeted the players with bright blue skies and very little wind. The two leading players teed off at 10:30am with the other matches to follow. In the early stages it looked very tight with a few matches stuck at all square for some time. First out Reg Gardiner (Maylands) managed a win over Tony King (Boyce Hill), The next match reached the last hole when Mark Jennings (Maylands) also secured his point against Boyce Hill’s Alex Murley. The first two matches going in favour of Maylands. The next two matches meant it swung back into balance as Boyce Hill's Mark Hazel and Dom Lodge secured their matches against Maylands' Ricky Hever and Kevin Proud respectively. At two matches each, with the remaining four matches on the course, tension on both sides appeared to be growing as the result was in the balance. As it transpired it could hardly have been a closer finish. When Steve Smyth (Boyce Hill) beat Nigel Mitchell (Maylands) & Grant Beglan secured his point for Boyce Hill by beating Steve Ramsbottom the match looked in favour of Boyce Hill. However, Maylands' Gary Waite's 5&4 win over Chris Love and Danny Christmas' victory over Boyce Hill's Steve Perry meant the overall result was four matches each. The Plate competitions are concluded by the ‘Holes Up’ rule should they end in a tie. With Boyce Hill's team totaling 11 holes up and Maylands managing one more, with a difference of 12 holes up, Maylands just did enough to win this year’s Leslie Wood Plate. Both teams showed fantastic displays of respect and sportsmanship during the matches and later on during the prize giving. Congratulations to Maylands GC on winning the Final but a huge congratulations to both teams for their displays of great golf and integrity shown on and off the course. We would like to thank The Rayleigh Club for hosting the Leslie Wood Plate Final, their organisation and hospitality which helped the day go so smoothly.

Men’s County Team 2018
ESSEX v HAMPSHIRE Frilford Heath (Red Course) – Sunday 7th October 2018 Final of the SE Group League
fter winning the Northern Section of the South East Group League with a 100% record, the Essex County Team arrived at Frilford Heath Golf Club on a clear, cold Sunday October A morning, to take on the South section winners and last year's English County Champions Hampshire in the final match to decide the overall South East Champions and winners of the Daily Telegraph Salver. With last year’s narrow defeat to Surrey in this fixture still burning strong, the Essex lads were in no mood to allow a repeat. Hampshire, however would be a very tough nut to crack and a close match was envisaged. Just how close would unfold in a day of high drama. As winners of the Eastern Counties Foursomes for the last 2 years, Essex were in confident mood for the morning matches and sure enough all the early exchanges were in our favour. At the turn we were ahead in 3 games with just Callum and Jordan being one adrift. This they managed to turn around and by the 18th were lying dormy 1 up. Callum's tee shot on the 300 yds par 4 saw his 3 wood pin high just off the green making his opponent have no option but to have a crack with driver which he pulled out of bounds left. Game over and a great start for Essex. Game 2 saw Will and Ricky up against Hampshire’s top pairing Martin Young and Tom Robson. After being 1 up at the turn, the Hants pair won 3 of the next 4 holes with some sparkling golf leaving them 2 up standing on the 14th tee and in confident mood. Ricky and Will had other ideas and won the next 2 holes to square the game. A half was a fitting outcome in a superb game of foursomes and this was to prove crucial in the following struggle. With Curtis & Arron and Taylor & Ali having relatively comfortable wins in their games, lunch was taken with Essex having a commanding 3.5 to 0.5 lead and Hampshire visibly crestfallen. With temperatures warming and Frilford looking a picture, the afternoon singles got underway. It was clear that Hampshire were not for giving up easily as Hants number 1 Tom Robson started with 2 birdies and an eagle in the first four holes to hold a 2 up lead. This standard carried on and Tom ran out a 4&3 winner. In match 2 Will had a 1 hole lead at the turn against last year’s Hants Captain Martin Young but after losing 4 holes on the spin the second point was on the board for Hampshire. In the other games things were also not going the way of Essex. Apart from Callum and Essex Champion Curtis, who held comfortable leads after 10 holes and Ricky who was all square, all the - 48 -

other matches were with the opposition and tension was mounting. Sure enough Curtis and Callum secured their respective ESSEX HAMPSHIRE wins leaving Essex needing one more point to win the title. With Ricky standing on the 18th tee one up, the final point was in our grasp, but lady luck decided to intervene. With Ricky's iron safely down the middle it was clear that his opponent needed something special so he pulled out the driver. As in match 1 in the morning this was carved left into the car park with a provisional ball taken and the match looking in the bag for Essex. With an ominous looking dent in the roof of a Porsche it was clear the ball had gone OB. After a search however, the Hants ball was found some 50 yds over the green next to the practise putting green. After intervention by the England Rules Official, the ball was deemed in bounds by a couple of inches. All this time Ricky had been patiently waiting by his ball expecting the game to be conceded only SEG County League Champi to now face a 70 yds shot to the green. This he duly did ons 2018 - ESSEX leaving a near 20 ft putt for birdie. The Hants player, young Alex Talbot followed suit. Ricky to go first leaves his putt some 5 ft short and with Alex ! 2 putting for a very unlikely par this left Ricky with his short putt to win the title. Horseshoes are supposed to be ! lucky but with the green surrounded with spectators this one proved to be with Hampshire as the ball ! somehow stayed out. A half to both players and score 6/5 to Essex with only Taylor Carter left out on the course. Encouragingly for Essex he was one up with 2 to play. The 17th hole showed just what a talented side Hampshire are, with Sam Parsons making Birdie on 17 the match was all square playing the last. Both made the green in regulation and with Sam making a comfortable par, Taylor was left with a putt virtually identical to Ricky's to seal his match and win the trophy. The green was surrounded and a pin could be heard to drop as Taylor's putt rolled into the cup for the half point taking Essex to the title. What a match! County Captain Andy May thanked Frilford Heath Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and course preparation, also to the England South East Group Officials for their excellent organisation.

THORNTON CUP PLATE The Rayleigh Club – Sunday 7th October 2018
O
n Sunday the 7th October Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club played Brentwood Golf Club in the final of the Thornton Cup Plate at The Rayleigh Club, near Hullbridge. A perfect day for golf greeted the players with bright blue skies and very little wind. First out for Stoke by Nayland was Alex English who managed to halve his match against Charlie Luxford. The next 3 matches all went Brentwood's way making the score after the first 4 matches, 3.5 to 0.5, and with 5 of the next 6 matches all being in the balance Brentwood looked favourites. Callum Hemsby won his match 4 & 3 for Stoke by Nayland against Matt Toms, but with Sean McCrudden then winning his match for Brentwood on the seventeenth, they were nearly over the line. Matches 8 and 9 went to Stoke by Nayland, closing the gap to 1 point. Brentwood's Joe Tatam was one up on the 15th with the final match all square between Brentwood's Charlie Burke & Stoke by Nayland's Gerald Collins. Joe's opponent, Sam Wardle finished with a birdie two on the 17th and holed a twenty foot putt across the 18th green to turn his match around and to steal a point from Tatam. Well played Sam. What seemed unlikely an hour earlier, the match hinged on game ten being played by Gerald Collins and Charlie Burke. A pair of pars on the 17th meant the match was to go down to the very last hole in the very last match, a thrilling finish to the championship. Unfortunately, Charlie hit his drive into a hedge on the right side of the hole, Gerald having found the heart of the green with his second shot, forced Charlie into pulling something magical off to keep the dream alive for Brentwood. Charlie tried to make a 4 with his provisional ball by holing his wedge shot. A tall ask, despite his efforts and a last-ditch putt for a five Charlie reluctantly conceded to Gerald which meant Stoke by Nayland won 5.5 to 4.5 points overall. An exciting finish to a great match which was played in the best of spirits with both teams showing the upmost respect for each other. A match that was enjoyed by players, caddies and spectators. - 50 -

South Eastern Group Colts League Final 2018
ESSEX v KENT Dartford Golf Club – Sunday 14th October 2018
K
ent was the host county for this year’s final, so with our opponents being on home turf and with at least one of their team being a Dartford member, Essex knew the match was going to be a tight one. Nevertheless the Essex team were well prepared. Captain Will Percival & Cassidy Steffens (Orsett). Brandon Meads, Shay McQueen, Ben Humphrey, Oscar Yeomans & reserve Jack Brown (Chelmsford). Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park) and Jordan Slater (Colchester). The weather forecast for the day was of concern. Definite rain, some heavy, possibly thunder storms. Fortunately the morning foursomes were played under overcast skies, with showers for only the last few holes. Will & Oscar went out first winning on the 16th 3&2. Kent then had a 2&1 win on the 17th followed by an extremely strong win of 6&5 on the 13th, the Kent pair six under par with five holes to play. The last match was down to Brandon & Ben – they won 2up. Morning Foursomes 2 – 2. The rain had set in by the time the afternoon singles started. Though fortunately no thunder storms. After six holes Essex were up in three, all square in four and down in one. Brandon was playing at number one and went on to an excellent win of 6&5 against one of Kent’s players who had won by that score in the morning foursomes. Games were close. Oscar losing 4&3 and Jordan finishing birdie, birdie, to conclude his match all square. At this point the overall match was still level. On the 17th Will won 2&1 and Lukas lost 2&1. Match to date still all square. Then Ben won 4&3 – Essex in the lead. Cassidy lost on the 18th. Shay brought in the final win of 2&1. A tightly contested match as expected. ESSEX RETAIN INTER COUNTY TITLE he Essex team of Jason Levermore, James Scade and Brett Taylor retained the Inter County title T at the Belfry early in October and became the first county to win the title more than once. Last year it went to a play-off but in 2018 the result was much more clear cut with a 5 shot victory after the 36 hole competition. Day 1 saw Essex storm into a 7 shot lead with all three of the team scoring under par led by Jason Levermore with an excellent 5 under par score of 66. With the best two scores counting, Essex could afford to dispense with Brett Taylor’s 1 under score which most of the counties would have been delighted to keep. Instead James Scade’s 2 under par set the target which none of the others could get close to matching. On day 2 the weather was far more difficult for scoring and the first Essex player in was Brett Taylor with a creditable 2 over par which meant that a reasonable score from one of the other two
would seal the deal. Jason Levermore returned a fine level par round and that was sufficient to take the title by 5 shots. A remarkable win on a difficult course and the trophy was presented to the team by the Captain of the PGA of Great Britain.
ESSEX PGA CHAMPIONSHIPS SOUTH ESSEX GOLF CENTRE he 2018 Essex PGA championships and ProAm was held this year on the tough South T Essex layout and generously sponsored by SKCG Electricals. The Pro-Am saw a course record by Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club with a fine 6 under par score of 67 to win by 3 shots from Jason Levermore from Little Channels and Lloyd Kennedy from Chelmsford Golf Club. The team event was won by the team representing the sponsor and guided by Professional James Scade from Little Channels. An excellent score of 90 stableford points was enough to take the title by one shot from Jason Levermore receiving the trophy from Mark Talbott. the team lead by
Professional Sam Teer from Clacton Golf Club. James Gurry’s team was third another point behind. On the second day the PGA Championship result went down the last group off the golf course in the 36 hole event. After the first round several players were in contention and it was a very open event depending who held their nerve in the pressure of the second round. Andy Pestell from Chelmsford Golf Club added a 3 under par round of 70 to his morning round of 69 to set a tough target in the clubhouse. Essex PGA Captain Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club then came with an astonishing course record equalling 6 under par 67 to set a target of 9 under par with only a few groups left on the golf course. The last group included Jason Levermore who was 3 under par from the morning round and another 3 under with 7 holes to go in the afternoon. An amazing finish of 5 under par in the last 7 holes saw the course record broken again as Jason recorded an 8 under par score of 65 and took the title again by 2 shots.

THE WARREN BETTER BALL
he Essex PGA returned to The Warren after a EVERYWHERE gap of several years to play a better ball event T and the autumn weather showed the course off to YOU GO! its best. With Professionals being partnered by amateurs in a stableford format there was some really good scoring. In third place were Mark IT’S EASY WITH Talbott and his amateur partner losing on countback to Steve Cipa from South Essex Golf FREE DIGITAL Centre with his amateur partner Eddie Martin, both pairs scoring 43 points. The winning pair SUBSCRIPTION were Professional Lewis Godstchalk and his amateur partner shown above who produced an excellent score of 44 points.
COLNE VALLEY PRO-AM easonable weather greeted the 21 teams which contested the Colne Valley Pro-Am R although it deteriorated as the day progressed. This did nothing to hamper the good scoring on a very well presented golf course and the Professional event was won by Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club with a very solid 4 under par 66.This was enough to win by 1 shot from Jason Levermore from Little Channels and Lloyd Kennedy from Chelmsford Golf Club. The team event in the Pro-Am was shared by the same three players with their respective amateur partners although the order was slightly different. Jason’s team took first prize with an impressive stableford points score of 89; Robert’s team came in with 85 points to beat Lloyd’s team by 1 point.

WINTER GOLF… YOU HAVE TO LOVE IT! es, playing golf in the winter months is brilliant. What's not to like? The ball stops Y where you hit it instead of bouncing off into the rhubarb, the ball holds the green, it's easy to hit through the trees (no leaves), quieter courses, and best of all the crisp fresh air and the sound of the frost as you walk to the 1st tee!
To improve your performance on the golf course this winter understand how your golf ball will behave! Your golf ball will not travel in winter as it does in summer ... especially the summer we have just experienced! There are many reasons for this; • Air temperature • Golf ball temperature • Ground conditions, little bounce and roll • You have six layers of clothing on • The biggest one, air density! (There’s loads more moisture for the ball to get through).
So given all of these factors, to enjoy your golf even more this winter, do this ... 1. When driving, accept that your ball will not go as far from the tee as normal. 2.Take way more club when going for the green. 3. Accept what happens in the game of golf and enjoy yourself. Winter golf, it is what it is, accept temporary tees, accept temporary greens, accept mud and bad lies. Concentrate on what you can do and to perform it! We are fresh off the back of a really successful Mind Zone session, held for 60 club golfers, of various abilities, from 8 year olds to 86 years young! Everyone of them took a plethora of techniques and tips that they can put into instant practice, when next on the course. Our next Mind Zone Masterclass is on Friday 30th November, when you will have a chance to really improve your game, with the handicap that you currently have AND without having to change your swing or technique. See the Mind Zone website for full details. Check out The Mind Zone website for some top tips on how to play your best this winter! Next month The Mind Zone will be focusing on how to ‘practice perfect’ this winter. Until then, enjoy your golf.
