Ladies European Tour Event at Stoke By Nayland
L
ydia Hall completed a wire to wire victory in the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland but there were a few unplanned diversions en route. Not least the sudden-death play-off with France’s Ines Escudier following a two shot swing on the par three final hole on the Gainsborough course at the Suffolk resort. Escudier, who began the day four shots behind Hall, birdied it for a six-under par round of 66 and complete the tournament’s 54-holes in nineunder. Hall, by contrast, bogeyed it. Back up the 18th tee the pair went but it was the 29-year-old PGA Assistant from Wales who appeared least fazed by the drama and ended up winning the 5,000 euro first prize. “The win was down to my putting again,” said Hall, who recently spent time in Abu Dhabi concentrating on honing that side of her game and making a couple of changes. “I’m playing a lot better now that I’ve sorted it out. I must say, though, the tense finish wasn’t in my plans. Ines made me work hard for my win – so did the three girls immediately behind us.” That trio comprising Scotland’s Michele Thomson, Emma Nilsson of Sweden, and Spain’s Luna Sobron finished two shots behind Hall and Escudier on seven-under to win €1650 apiece.
As in previous years, a popular Pro Am preceded the 3 day championship and finished with a gala dinner and prize giving. The event this year was won by the celebrity “Media team” with a score of 85. The team included BBC TV Look East presenters, Stewart White and Tom Williams, Tamara Unwin, one of the family owners at Stoke by Nayland, and their professional, Meghan MacLaren who is leading the LETAS rankings and is assured a place in the main tour next season. Anyone wishing to play in the Pro Am next year may like to put a “save the date” note in their diaries for Wednesday 12th September 2018!

Ingrebourne Links Opens North 9-Holes
I
ngrebourne Links Golf & Country Club have recently opened their first 9-holes to much acclaim from members and their guests. Construction at the 350 acre site, located just outside Rainham, started back in 2010 and, once completed, will boast 27-holes of ‘links’ style golf. Course Architect, Alan Walker, hit the opening shot off the 1st tee. Thereafter, members followed over the weekend in a number of pre-organised ‘taster flights’. Commenting on the opening, Dominic Eagle, General Manager, says: “We’ve been delighted with the feedback we’ve received from members, who unanimously agree that it’s a fantastic 9-holes and can’t wait until the remaining 18-holes are opened over the next two years. It’s been very much a ‘soft’ opening aimed exclusively at our current 200 golf members. We really want to protect the course because it’s something quite special that deserves to be
respected in this way.” Many courses profess to offer ‘inland links’ style golf, but it doesn’t take long to realize that Ingrebourne Links has gone that extra distance in creating a very authentic, traditional course experience. The whispy grass in the rough, deep rivetted bunkers and undulating fairways recreate the origins of the game perfectly. All that’s missing really is the sea! Preceding the courses, the clubhouse was completed in the summer and opened its doors to members for the first time on 1st July. The striking design is matched by the outstanding facilities including state-of-the-art gym, fitness studios, luxurious locker rooms and banqueting suite able to accommodate up to 250 guests. Both golf and health club membership is still available, with a range of options to suit every individual. Call 01708 201301 for more details or visit www.ingrebournelinks.com. -4-

H
i Essex Golfers ... Now that the clocks have gone back and we now have those darker evenings the Golf Season has now entered Winter, which can be rather down heartening. Well what do you do? Review your year and look at how you played. See what parts of your game were good or great and other parts that let you down. The importance of this is paramount, as we all work very hard and we want to use our Golf as an outlet of enjoyment and fun, but also feel competitive regardless of handicap.
On a different note, I have started running an area on The European Junior Golf Tour, which involves The South East and Anglia. The Tour is to encourage Junior golfers to play on various courses in a friendly but competitive atmosphere, covering all ages from 5 up to 17/18 year old Juniors. The Tour is all year round and the next event is at Stock Brook Country Club on Sunday 19th November. There is a Super Six pitch and putt for beginners and also young aspiring golfers, who will also play 9 holes on The Manor Course. The older established golfers will play 18 holes on The Stock and Brook 9’s as an individual and can also play in a Fun Adult/Junior as well. This will incorporate players having the opportunity to earn a place on The Race To Spain held every October in The Costa Del Sol. So if you are interested please contact me on 07888 828 760 or wozthegolfpro1@gmail.com
Breakdown them into segments like this; • Putting • Chipping • Bunker Shots • Pitching • Fairway shots (Irons and Woods) • Par 3 first shots • Drives on Par 4’s and 5’s Why start with putting? Well, it’s important to look at your game backwards. There could be a great reason why you didn't putt well, as the cause could be caused by other aspects of your game putting pressure on you holing putts. Looking at the game of Golf backwards gets you to see it the opposite to how we play. We can always blame I didn’t score well because of my Putting, but is their a reason? By simply going through these
checkpoints we can see our issues and then get some help on improving those parts, whilst not neglecting our good parts.
Happy Golfing, -8-

Plus-One Junior Habebul Lifts Newton Title
Habebul Islam (second from right) with other prize winners.
H
abebul Islam became the latest in a distinguished line of young players to become the holder of the Newton Green Junior Open title. The 16-year-old from Ipswich, who now plays off plus-one, took the scratch prize as he recorded a two over par 71. Islam, who is now being home taught to give him time to develop his game further, was one shot ahead of Callum Hensby (Stoke-byNayland), who plays off three, with a 72. This was the same score as the current Suffolk junior match play champion, Newton’s Harvey Watts, now off two. A considerable headache for the organisers was the number of players misunderstanding how to score according to the rules of golf, which necessitated at least one possible disqualification being referred by telephone to England Golf. There were 12 juniors playing off single figures. The only girl in the division, Fioana Stokes (Haverhill), playing off seven, won the nett prize with 69, beating Hensby on count back. Watts was third. Higher handicappers played in Stableford divisions, with Henry Meadows, of Bury St Edmunds winning division one, and Newton’s Nathan Willett, winning the 20-plus handicap division two. The Haverhill duo of Stokes and James Iron
won the Aldous team cup, with Eloise Aldous, the Suffolk girls’ junior organiser, presenting the trophy on behalf of her family. The winners also receive a free year’s membership at Newton. Newton men’s captain Gareth Evans presented the rest of the awards in a day organised by club professional Tim Cooper. Results: Scratch championship, 71 Habebul Islam (Ipswich), 72 (ocb) Callum Hensby (Stokeby-Nayland), 72 Harvey Watts (Newton). Division 1, 36 (ocb) Henry Meadows (Bury St Edmunds), 36 Isaac Thoombs (Stoke-byNayland), 35 Georgina Parker (Bury St Edmunds). Division 2, 38 (ocb) Nathan Willett, 38 Callum Hughes (Fynn Valley), 30 Natham Thompson (Stoke-by-Nayland).

Load the wrist hinge C
ontinuing with my series on hitting the ball further, one of the biggest factors is how you are able to lever the club. Simply put it at the angles you can create between the left arm and the shaft of the club. To start to load the lever system, ideally you want to hinge the wrists fully at the top of the backswing. In the picture you can see me doing this. If you look closely I have placed a tee peg in the end of the grip. To help my awareness of the hinge I am attempting to point this tee peg directly away from the target. This helps the hinge. If you can improve your wrist hinge it will give you more potential energy moving into the downswing. Have fun Gary

How Many Clubs Do You Carry? F
or many carrying fourteen clubs is the norm, in fact if they carried less they may possibly feel they are giving something away to the rest of the field. But how many clubs do you actually use? With winter fast approaching and trolley bans just around the corner maybe it’s time to reflect on the last couple of rounds to see what clubs were useful and what clubs were simply along for the ride.
A FEW PHRASES I HEAR FAR TOO OFTEN:
“When I get it right it’s a great club” “I really like my 3 iron, it’s great for hitting under trees” “I never use my lob wedge, it goes too high” If any of the above apply to any club in your bag then the best place for it is in the garage. Sad thing is there are loads of these statements that I see as ‘red flags’ when I look at or discuss someone’s golf bag. If there is a club you rarely use don’t carry it, if there is a club that has a low success rate don’t carry it because you either need to replace it with something that does the job or you don’t need it in the first place. Ok, so the rule clearly states fourteen clubs but that is the maximum number not the required number. Many golf clubs have an annual two clubs and
putter (or something similar) and for many their score does not change, all that happened was that there were less decisions to make. I honestly think many golfers could play just as well or even better with around eight to ten clubs, that’s all they need to play well and it would be so much easier. Unfortunately golf is a game where it is easy to follow trends and think that if Professionals carry certain clubs so should you … don’t forget if you carry it you need to practice with it. So, how about this winter dropping a wedge, maybe a hybrid or fairway wood and only carry either all the odd or evened numbered irons and see what happens, you may be surprised at the result.

WINTER IS COMING!
W
inter is on its way and its always a downer for us golfers. Playing in your waterproofs and in the cold can have its good points but it is much easier to play in a shirt. But, what can you do to make the best of the winter months and improve your game for next year.
WINTER GOLF PLAN CONSULTATION
Are you wanting to improve your game this winter? If you would like to make next year your best season I invite you to a an initial 2 hour consultation to see where your game is and make a bespoke plan of improvement.. Cost is £50 for the 2 hour session. Please get in contact with Matt on 07808 003 619 to book your consultation...
• Start getting ready for next season now If you want to improve your game for next year, why not start now so you can hit the ground running when next season starts. Reflect on what you did well and what you need to improve on. • Winter is good time to improve your technique - You don't want to be thinking about your swing too much when you are playing alot. Take some time to evaluate your technique and ball flight. What are your strengths and what needs some work. Sit down with your coach and have a discussion to get their feedback. • Improve your fitness - Being flexible and stable are only going to help you play better. Tour players will use the winter off season to really focus on their fitness. Try pilates as a great way to improve your flexibility, stability and posture which can really help your swing and game.

ctober saw the Drive In of our new Lady Captain, Sharon Warrington. Sharon is a former ski instructor having previously lived in Switzerland so this formed the theme for the day with the Captain and members attending the event being dressed appropriately. A number of members from the Men’s section joined in the day and separate competitions were held for the ladies and the men, with 37 ladies playing a 9 hole reverse waltz format in teams of 3 and the men a 4 ball competition over 18 holes counting the best 2 scores in each team. The result of the ladies competition were:Winners: 38 points (on countback) Elaine Atkin, Mary Frake, Angie Smith. Nearest the pin on 3rd (over water) Mary Frake.

Are AREyou YOU
Target TARGET Focused?
FOCUSED? T
he understanding of “coaching” has evolved of the years and it is becoming more recognised to improve your performance on the course greater playability input is required instead of relying solely on numbers from using the latest technology. Technology has its place; however, it can never replace the “playability” required which can only be coached through a variety channels which the client can relate. I have made it my goal to seek out top industry leaders in this department which is an on-going fascinating journey. As a former Ladies European Tour Player and plus 4 hcp amateur golfer I can certainly appreciate the pressure situations faced on and off the course, providing coping strategies to my clients. I know players can focus on too many technical thoughts during a round of golf instead of visualising or focusing upon the shot in hand or the TARGET. Here is one simple addition to incorporate to you game which I am sure a number of you reading this may omit. This is more likely to occur on specific shots particularly a pressurised or unfamiliar situation.
TARGET FOCUSED … The longer we stand over the ball generally the more technical and negative thoughts pass through our minds e.g. Don’t hit it Out of bounds! so, let’s engage with the key object “The Target” interrupting those damaging thoughts. Don’t become like a statue at address allow for fluidity and movement in the body for example a slight knee flex or a waggle take a look at the target a few times prior to taking your shot if you can practice visualisation then this is the time to press the play button. We have all heard the saying “paralysis by analysis” play the game and enjoy the natural movements and don’t play golf Sarah Bennett by numbers.

Golf is Not Boring for the Golfing Girls
A
few days ago an on line survey revealed golf as the most boring sport ... ahead of chess and cricket to name a few. Sarah Bennett PGA Fellow Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Golf Club and England U18 Regional boys and girls Head Coach set up Golfing Girls some 9 years ago to encourage ladies to try the game. The growth of such has shown a figure of 40% of the Ladies membership which has been developed through her unique ideas over the years. “As long as the ladies continue within their quest, either as a recreational player or someone who strives to compete, I am happy.” Sarah encourages Women to commence the game but also to continue to play through a variety of structured coaching sessions. She has seen and encouraged her junior Golfing Girls and women to enter County Events as a progression. “I am delighted to see 4 Golfing Girl juniors ready to play in the County Girls Autumn meeting, they met through attending Golfing Girl sessions” It just so happened Sarah was asked to complete a live interview for BBC Essex on the very subject where 11 of her Golfing Girls were in attendance. It was certainly a different interview live from the course, providing the opportunity for ladies who Sarah coaches to explain to the BBC Essex listeners why the love of golf is there. “It was a case of avoiding the greenstaff who were cutting fairways and leaf blowing!” “We all know the social benefits exists in golf but the longevity, fitness and challenge of the game were cited by the Golfing Girls in addition to the network of friends built up over the years as to their primary reasons.”
The interview ended with very Happy Golfing Girls yelling down the phone to Ronnie and a few thousand listeners “Golf is not boring” I must apologise for being so loud ... Why not come and try golf for yourself? sarah@golfinggirl.co.uk or she can be contacted via Mobile: 07719 617 349 where she coaches both Members and non in a group or 1-2-1 format.

How Did Dustin Johnson Not Win The WGC? Y
ou’d have thought the World Number 1 player, with a 6 shot lead, going into the Final Round of the WGC - HSBC Champions would be making a space in the trophy cabinet for a third WGC title THIS year?! Not so ... and I actually called it before the final round was underway! Now, here at The Mind Zone, we have huge respect for Dustin Johnson and what he has achieved in the game, let’s be honest, us mortals dream of hitting a 350 yard plus drive down the fairway! ... but there was something in DJ’s post round interview that made me consider … he’s overthink-ing the situation. Johnson, when being interviewed talked about the fact he wasn’t happy with his putter, so he had a new one made, handed to him twenty minutes or so before his tee time, he hit a few putts on the practice green before his third round and decided he would go with the new putter. His indecisiveness over the equipment he was using, I believe, was an unnecessary distraction during his final round. When asked what his tactics would be in the final round and whether he had to worry about his fellow competitors, DJ responded with ‘I’m not worried what they are doing, I have enough to worry about in my own game’. Now, what on earth did he have to worry about? He was going into the last 18 holes with a six shot lead, had played very well to attain that lead over the previous three days, had already won two WGC events in the past year and was world number ONE! A bogey on the 1st and 2nd hole will have done nothing for DJ’s confidence, although even with just 9 holes remaining, he still held onto a 3 shot lead. Afterwards he said ‘I just couldn’t get any-thing going today and no putts would drop’. I’m sure we have all had a similar round on occasion, but if we could limit those days to a
minimum, how much better would that be? How much better could it be? Justin Rose, on the other hand, simply followed his process throughout the final round, starting the final round 8 shots back from Dustin Johnson. Even after carding three birdies and three bogies to finish the front 9 at level par, surely it was a big ask to go on and win it, especially since he was 6 shots back with 9 holes to play? Rose just kept taking each shot in turn, playing his own game and remaining calm. When he reached the 18th tee, he knew even a bogey 6 would be enough.
When you watch Justin Rose play (now currently 6th in the World Rankings) you’ll notice he rarely gets agitated. He remains calm, in his own process and if you cast your mind back to the play-off in the Masters against Sergio, he was very methodical, despite eventually losing out that time to the Spaniard. We all, of course, want to win golf tournaments, society days, and even the Saturday morning swindle, but have you noticed on those days when everything comes good, how relaxed and calm you felt? To find out more about how YOU can start being even more successful, come along to The Mind Zone - Play Your Best Golf session being held at The Bentley Golf Club, Brentwood, Essex on Monday 20th November 2017 at 7.00pm. THE WINTER BLUES W
inter for most golfers bring the blues. Off season, golf courses unplayable, unpleasant weather conditions and missing their hobby/sport. There is a very good way of avoiding or improving these winter blues by hitting the gym! Exercise releases endorphins, a hormone that makes you happy! Also the gym can keep you very busy whilst there is less golf going on. I am a huge advocate of golfers throwing themselves into the gym in the late autumn and winter as this is the only time in the golfing calendar is empty and there is real time to make progress in areas such as posture, core, stability, strength and for me, most importantly, flexibility. A question i am asked frequently by golfers is
“what do I do in the gym?” That question to me is an absolutely minefield! Every golfer is different and needs to use the gym in different ways. I would absolutely recommend flexibility to be the number 1 goal. A whole spring/summer playing copious amounts of golf leaves golfers muscles tight and generally out of balance. Once some flexibility or balance has been achieved I would then say the core/posture needs attention, into strength and then finally into power right in time for the golfing season to start all over again! I have written a mini flexibility programme for you all to get you started in the gym below, next month I will cover core/posture and give you a mini programme to follow to start you off there too.
FLEXIBILTY Below is an example and a very basic start to balancing the body and achieving flexibility. STRETCH 1. Hamstrings 2. Spinal Rotation
DURATION 1 minute 1 minute
LYING HAMSTRING STRETCH Lie on you back with one leg bent and one straight. Loop a belt or towel around the foot of the straight leg. Use your arms to pull the leg up until a stretch is felt behind the knee – keeping the leg straight. This should be firm, but not painful. Be sure to relax your neck and shoulders, and keep breathing as you do this stretch. Corrective streching ... 1 minute holds. SPINAL ROTATION Lie on your back and bring knees up toward your chest so your body is positioned as if you’re sitting in a chair.Your knees and hips should be bent at 90-degree angles. Now, place the palms of your hands flat on the floor. Bring your knees down to the right side. Lift your left hip up but keep your shoulders touching the floor. Repeat both sides. ALWAYS stretch the tight side x 2, for example, if your right side hurts more to stretch, stretch it 2 x rather than 1 x on the left. You are aiming to balance the body, not keep the flexibility issues the same, so always make sure you are stretching the tighter side more than the not so tight side. Any questions regarding flexibility please ask ... I am more than happy to help and look out for my next article next month to start learning how to strengthen your core/posture. - 30 -

Great Display by Colchester Juniors
Colchester Golf Club’s Royal British Legion Junior team - Cai James, Charley Hatley, Dan Nicholls and Max Maynard.
C
olchester Golf Club juniors reached the final stages of the Royal British Legion Challenge played at the neutral course of Staverton Park played over last weekend. They eased through the semi-final against Weymouth by four holes. In the final against a team from Bondhay it was obvious that it was going to be tough, as Colchester’s first pairing of Cai James and Dan Nicholls both playing off three were giving 29 shots to their opponents. Colchester took an early
lead but lost by four holes. They lost out to two nett eagles and seven nett birdies. It was a closer result in the second pairing where Charley Hatley and Max Maynard lost by just the one hole. An achievement considering that they were giving 26 shots and watched three nett eagles and several nett birdies sink before their eyes. The end result however was an excellent accomplishment in this nationwide competition.

Bernard and Sylvia Simpson took over the junior section at Benton Hall over nine years ago and when they started there were just three members. Junior Participation Booming at The School of Golf
Young members of The School of Golf.
T
wo years ago Jack Cole and Matthew Mahoney launched The School of Golf with the sole aim of providing a junior coaching programme that would keep children engaged, excited and grow a love for golf. In the companies infancy the boys worked closely alongside Little Channels directors and devised an 8 level junior coaching programme which they call the ‘development programme’, and they see the early support and guidance provided by management as a big factor in their growth: “The directors at Little Channels have always been our biggest supporters, helped us finalise our programme and continue to encourage us whenever we have new ideas and initiatives. In the early stages they gave us the time to build our business and establish ourselves within the junior coaching sector, from which we are very grateful”. As children progress through the 8 level coaching programme they receive different colour hats to show what level they are currently working
towards. Within each level there are both technical and on course skills that children have to complete, and once these skills are performed appropriately coaches then tick them off within the development programme workbook. The beauty of the programme is that children are allowed to progress at their own speed, can see for themselves how well they are developing, and get the social aspect of golf through group learning. The development programme at Little Channels has significantly grown with over 85 juniors attending weekly structured coaching programmes. This running alongside the schools coaching the company provides means The School of Golf coach close to 175 children each week!! During 2017 the company have taken on new venues across Essex, most recently in April at the Belvedere golf range and The Notleys golf club. “We have been at the above facilities since April and are now beginning to see an influx of children join our coaching programmes. It shows the flexibility the development programme has to be able to deliver it at a variety of different facilities and we are delighted to offer our services at both the Belvedere and Notleys to run seamlessly alongside our continued work at Little Channels and Belfairs Park”.
- 38 -
To help grow the business further the company has two registered assistant professionals (Josh Lewis & Ashdon Brown) who currently assist and shadow the delivery of school and group junior coaching, with the view in the future to take on schools and sessions themselves as they progress through their foundation degrees. Highlights of 2017 for ‘The School of Golf ’: • Erin Earl winning most improved girl golfer in Essex • Callum Chamberlain qualifying for the UK Kids European championships in Scotland (2018) • Dominic Hoskin winning Benton Hall junior club championship • 25 Essex golf union representatives from under 12- under 16 age groups

Callaway Introduces Tour – Driven Products For The Better Player
C
allaway, the #1 Selling Iron company, has announced the launch of two new iron models for the better player; the new Apex MB and X Forged. Both these two iron ranges have already been getting significant usage on Tour and, from January 26th 2018, they will be made available in stores across Europe to professional and amateur golfers.
Apex MB Irons Quickly becoming Callaway’s most popular iron on Tour (including being the #1 Iron model at the recent Italian Open), the new Apex MB is a true muscle-back blade with classic, compact shaping and style, a traditional, slightly thinner top line, and a beautiful bright chrome finish.
The world’s best players have been heavily involved in the development of Apex MB, and they already feature in many Callaway Staff Professional bags, including Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Nicolas Colsaerts, Haydn Porteous, David Horsey, Thomas Detry and Alvaro Quiros. Callaway engineers have paid particular attention to CG positioning in the Apex MB to create a ball flight preferred by Tour players, whilst retaining more traditional lofts that align to the needs of the better golfer who is in-tune with distance gapping and consistency. Each iron, forged from a single piece of 1025 Carbon Steel, is engineered for a remarkably soft feel, with the exact craftsmanship and precision that can only be achieved through Callaway’s premium Triple Net Forging process that allows for a more aggressive and precise ‘V’ shaped groove pattern, to deliver consistent control and shot-shaping, for pin-point accuracy. “Creating a club with the shortest blade length, smallest head and thinnest sole of any irons in the current Callaway range, Apex MB are unashamedly designed for the type of player that looks for maximum workability and has very specific needs from how the club interacts with the turf,” added Luke. X Forged Irons With a clean and classic look at address, the new X Forged Irons are engineered for high performance and exceptional feel from a precise Triple Net Forging process. This single piece, cavity back iron features Tour configured soles, CG progression for precision shot-making and accuracy, with just the right amount of forgiveness and a classic finish. X Forged also features a similar precise and aggressive ‘20V’ shaped groove pattern seen in the Apex MB, made possible through the forging process, promoting high levels of control and spin out of any playing conditions, whilst retaining the clean and classic look at address, inspired by some of Callaway’s most popular forged irons. Compared to the Apex MB, X Forged is more forgiving with a slightly longer blade and slightly larger head size, to instil confidence in both Tour players and accomplished amateurs. www.callawaygolf.com

TPT Golf™ Sets a New Standard in Graphite Shafts
World #1 Joins Hublot to Introduce New Big Bang Unico Golf Watch
T
he Swiss watchmaker has joined forces with world #1 Golfer, Dustin Johnson, to unveil a watch that is dedicated to the ultimate precision sport – golf. Hublot has designed, developed, manufactured and assembled a module to equip its new UNICO movement, which has been specifically created for golf. The MHUB1580 movement allows golfers to seamlessly calculate their score whilst on course. Hublot’s mechanical golf watch features aperture displays and is ultra-lightweight, providing true sports performance. “The Big Bang Unico Golf has a contemporary design and is easy to use. It has digital displays and is very light – less than 100 grams on the wrist. It has everything that I want from a golf watch and is the perfect fit,” says Dustin Johnson, Hublot Ambassador, Major Champion and World #1
S
Hublot carried out real-life testing by inviting its friends to measure the length of their drives against those of Dustin Johnson on a simulator. Quite a challenge, as the world’s #1 golfer pushes Trackman technology to the limit with his extraordinary distance! The case of the Big Bang Unico Golf is carved from Texalium®, an innovative material exclusive to Hublot, that is an amalgamation of carbon fiber and aluminum. This unique composite gives the watch its lightness; it weights precisely 97.93 grams! The Big Bang Unico Golf has the look of a chronograph and has been conceived as a chronograph. • Its movement features return-to-zero heart piece cams that ensure the counting mechanism is robust and reliable. • The putter-shaped pusher at 2 o’clock activates the mechanism for displaying the number of strokes taken and counts the strokes per hole. • The pusher at 4 o’clock allows the wearer to move on to the next hole by resetting the stroke counter to zero. • The counter at 6 o’clock displays the total number of strokes played and is simultaneously updated. • The pusher at 8 o’clock is shaped like a tee. This resets the mechanism and sets the counters to zero at the end of the round. www.hublot.com
wiss-based TPT Golf™ announced a new range of graphite golf shafts that debuted during the 2017 PGA Merchandise Show. Using ‘Thin Ply Technology’ (TPT) carbon fiber materials and a patented manufacturing process developed by its parent company, North Thin Ply Technology SARL, TPT Golf™ is setting new standards in shaft performance. The patent-pending manufacturing process enables golf shafts to be made with exceptionally accurate fiber placement in a highly uniform way around the shaft. This method creates a spineless shaft and overcomes the inconsistencies sometimes seen in shafts produced by the more-traditional table rolling methods. TPT shafts provide exceptional feel, leading to tighter shot dispersion, low spin and increased distance. TPT Golf has a team of dedicated experts who are working on building shafts for Tour players. Biomechanical specialist Jean-Jacques Rivet has been instrumental in developing this new range and validating performance. He has also been a huge influence in developing a custom shaft-fitting process that allows the company to offer fully customized shafts. Leading golf coach David Leadbetter has also provided strong technical support during the range development, and has entered into a partnership with TPT Golf™ to establish a shaft-fitting network linked to the David Leadbetter Academies around the world. “In a sport where feel is everything, TPT shafts offer a unique level of feel to golfers,” says Leadbetter. “This is the most technically advanced shaft for distance and direction, and even makes your bad shots better.” TPT can now provide the best-performing products for Tour pros and amateurs alike, bringing a consistent and precise product into the shaft marketplace. The range of TPT Golf™ shafts has been designed to make the fitting process as simple as possible. There are models to suit players with any swing speed. www.tptgolf.com

MULLIS TROPHY
In Partnership with
Colchester Golf Club – Sunday 1st October 2017
Winner with Mike Hart (EGU IPP), Cedric Mullis (Sponsor) and S Ness (Colchester GC Captain).
T
he Mullis Trophy was first played for in 1931, and is traditionally the final competition of the season. As 36 teams representing 28 Clubs set off to play 18 holes in a fourball better ball stableford format, the weather was overcast with the occasional shower but at no time during the day were they serious enough to prevent play. The course was in super condition despite the usual course maintenance that takes place this time of year across the country. Green fairways and lush greens made a beautiful setting for our competitors to do battle. One of the first scores returned was a fantastic 44 points from Crondon Park pair, Bill Beard & Roger Clover who dove tailed fantastically well pretty much sharing the course equally with Bill featuring on 10 holes and Roger stepping in for the remaining 8 holes. 23 points on the outward nine and a mere 21 returning home made a tough target with most of the field to return. There were some great scores to come, numerous scores in the fourty points and upwards bracket, which included a group of four teams on 40, three more on 41 and another three pairs on 42 by the end of the day. The groups that managed to return with 42 points were Upminster’s Martin Ramsey & Steve Taylor, Malvern Taylor & Brian Dinning of Ballards Gore and the strongest back nine duo of Gary & Joe Munday of The Rayleigh Club resulted in winning third place overall on Countback. In second place were Langdon Hills’ representatives Duncan Grover & Stephen Milligan, one shot back from the winning score with 43 points. A fantastic effort coming late in the day, to scare the leaders and knock a few prize winners down the leader board. The long-time returned pair of Bill and Roger looked relieved as the final groups returned without topping the board, the hour and a half wait was worth it, as their 44 points managed to maintain 1st place resulting in the Crondon Park pair lifting the Mullis Trophy. Their speech was a humble gesture and an appreciative one that illustrated how happy they were to have held on to win. Our Sponsor representative, Mr Cedric Mullis spoke to the room expressing his thanks to everyone involved and his grandfather's passion for golf. We thank Mr Mullis for attending and all of the hard work and efforts Mullis & Peake have offered the Essex Golf Union in Sponsoring this event. Our thanks go to Colchester Golf Club for their Runners up. excellent hospitality and beautifully presented course. - 45 -

ESSEX v BB&O v SUSSEX SEG U16 Regional Final
Essendon Golf Club – Sunday 1st October 2017
T
he final of this year’s SEG U16 league was played between Essex, BB&O and Sussex on the new course at Essendon Golf Club in Hertfordshire on Sunday 1st October. Conditions were fortunately dry and reasonably mild with a fresh wind blowing which strengthened during the day, and the course was wet from overnight rain which made for some very challenging holes. The predominantly park land course was in excellent condition with water and penal rough on many holes plus slick putting surfaces which held a well struck shot presenting a true ball strikers test. The format was 9 holes foursomes in the morning followed by 18 holes singles in the afternoon, all in the established three-way match play format, 2 points for a win and 1 for a half. The four morning foursomes matches got under way at 08.00, all being very close affairs through their restricted 9 hole format. At their conclusion things were looking promising for Essex having beaten Sussex 3-1 and being a single point down to BB&O 1.5-2.5. When the afternoon matches got underway it soon became evident that the strength of the opposition had not been truly shown in the morning foursomes. Despite all of our efforts and some battling performances notably from Harvey Sullivan, Will Dove and Harvey Payne we were defeated 7-1 by both Sussex and the eventual winners BB&O. Although a disappointing conclusion Essex still finished third in the SE of England in what was the inaugural year of the competition, which on reflection is a good achievement and has provided the boys with a valuable learning experience. ESSEX v SURREY County Final Match
Farleigh Golf Club – Sunday 8th October 2017
T
he England Golf South East Group County League final took place at Farleigh Golf Club in the heart of Surrey on a lovely clear autumn morning. The two protagonists being Essex (winners of the North section) and Surrey (winners of the South) The first match of the morning foursomes set the standard which seemed prevalent throughout the day with birdie putt after birdie putt being holed on the excellent undulating greens, unfortunately for Andy May and Ali Plumb the majority of these were by the highly rated number one pairing of Surrey captain and plus 4 handicapper David Corben and his young partner Harry - 46 -

Plowman-Ollington. A 4&3 win to Surrey. Match number two saw our own birdie blitz with Will Percival and Callum Pipe winning our only point of the morning on the last hole of another quality match. Unfortunately in the last two games Surrey were again in control on the greens and ran out 2&1 winners in both. Lunchtime score 3-1 to Surrey and a steep hill to climb for our lads in the afternoon singles. First match out in the afternoon Ali Plumb. saw Arron paired with David Corben. ! ! Despite some sparkling shot making and being 1 up at the ! !! ! ! ! ! ! ! E ! ! turn Arron finally bowed to David’s red hot putting by 3&2, both players well under par at the end. This was followed by Callum’s loss to Harry 5&3 in another birdie laden game. Score now 5-2 to Surrey. With Surrey just needing another 1.5 points things did not look good for Essex at this stage. However in the true fighting spirit that we have seen all year Essex came back with wins from Will Percival, Jay Beisser, Curtis Knipes and Brandon Meads to level the score at 5 all. ! Brandon in the process having an amazing 11 birdies in his 3&2 win ! ! ! ! E ! over ! playing partner David Primrose, who himself was 7 under at the finish! Truly remarkable golf. So with scores tied and just Andy May and Ali Plumb left out on the course the atmosphere was tense. Andy May. With! Andy 2 down against the talented Will Dugdale playing 16 he needed to win to stand a chance of winning his match. However ! E ! ! despite an excellent approach it was! Will who almost holed his second shot leaving a gimme birdie and Andy needing to hole his putt to take ! ! ! ! it to the next hole. His putt narrowly slipped by and it was 6-5 Surrey. A valiant effort. So a win from last man Ali was needed to square the match and share the Daily Telegraph Salver. This however was not destined to be and with Ali lipping out for birdie on 16, his opponent was dormy 2 up with the half point needed for a Surrey victory. Ali’s match ending Captain Jay Beisser. 2&1 to Surrey anchor Kieran Lovelock. ! Final match score 7-5 to surrey in a truly marvellous match played in the finest of spirits between two excellent sides. Our thanks to all the England Golf Officials, Farleigh Golf Club, our supporters and caddies for making this such a memorable occasion. Thanks also to all the work and support of the Essex officials and clubs in what has been a memorable year. Hopefully! we can go one better in 2018. PHIL HULSE County Team Manager - 47 -

BENTLEY GOLF CLUB v CRONDON PARK Leslie Wood Plate Final
Stock Brook Manor Golf Club – Sunday 8th October 2017
T
he final of the 2017 Leslie Wood Plate was hosted by Stock Brook Manor Golf Club on 8th October, and was contested by Crondon Park and Bentley Golf Clubs. Both teams started confidently in very pleasant autumnal weather, on a suitably challenging golf course. The Bentley struck first with a comfortable win for Pete Weller in match 2, and after some close early exchanges the momentum quickly started to move in their favour. A half for Callum Nicholls in the lead match was followed by narrow wins for Mick Sandle, Team Captain Nathan Summers, and Mike Toft, leaving them tantalisingly close to overall victory. Brian Holdgate finally won his hard fought match against Sam Little 2&1 to give Bentley an unassailable lead with 5.5 points. The remaining matches were then called in and declared halved. Essex Golf Union Immediate Past President, Mike Hart, presented the medals to the players and Plate Trophy to Bentley Team Captain Nathan Summers, congratulating all the players on reaching the final, and thanking Stock Brook Manor for hosting this event. - 48 -

THE ESSEX v THE WARREN Thorton Cup Plate Competition Final
Crondon Park Golf Club – Sunday 8th October 2017
T
he 2017 Thornton Cup Plate Final was played at Crondon Park on 8th October between The Warren and The Essex Golf Clubs. A lovely autumn day greeted both teams for the 2017 final on a well prepared Crondon Park course. As the matches progressed through the first 9 holes there was little to split the two teams, The Essex just slightly edging some closely fought matches and The Warren holding more significant leads in two matches in the latter half of the draw. First blood went to The Essex with wins for Mike Dixon and Team Captain Jamie Lowe in matches 2 and 3, but this was closely followed by a first point for The Warren, as Sam Kinnane won 2&1 in the lead match. In an evenly fought final both teams kept picking up wins until we reached 4 – 4 with the last two matches out on the final few holes. Dave Ransley chipped in on the 17th to close his match out with a 3&1 victory for the Warren, with the one remaining match now going down the 18th all square. The large following of supporters excitedly watched on as Naithan Tucker scored the final decisive point for The Warren by winning the 18th. The final score being The Warren 6, The Essex 4. Essex Golf Union Immediate Past President, Mike Hart, presented the medals to the players and Plate Trophy to The Warren, congratulating all the players for the quality of their golf, and thanking Crondon Park for once again hosting this final. - 49 -

UNDER 14 REPORT
ollowing the pre Christmas sifting sessions at The Warren GC our coaches David Brooks and Chris Jenkins selected a total of 46 boys to take part in summer coaching, made up of 10 under 12yo, 18 under 13 and 18 under 14’s. There are three separate training groups identified as TSG1 which has five full days of coaching, whilst TS2-G1 and TS2-G2 have five half days each. At the recent team managers meeting called by David Brooks it was proposed to not allow players to use their mobile telephones during the session, but to put them in a safe place until break time, then allow players to check their phones before returning them to the safe place until the end of day. The thinking behind this is to get the boys to concentrate more on the session in hand. Our first get together was on the 5th March at Channels GC using 40 of the boys in an U14 v U13 match with the U12 split between the two sides. The format was singles match play off scratch, there were some interesting matches played over the 18 holes with 4 of them ending all square and the final result being an honourable draw Some parents response to emails is still not good, but we will persevere. Anyone have any ideas on how to improve it. Winter coaching at North Weald GC under the guidance of Coach Paul Sullivan went very well, with only 4 players in the group, sessions were very individual and all the boys appear to have benefitted from them. Our thanks to Paul.

arah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional and Head Teaching Professional delivered a Halloween Spooky Saturday special for the Three Rivers Saturday Junior golfers which she heads. The children were treated to an hour of “spooky fun and learning” with England Regional Coach Sarah Bennett. “It is important to be creative when coaching young players with limited technical input until a specific time within their development. The technicalities are subtly built into the activities as opposed to “instruction.” I have a mix of girls and
boys with themed events during the year which are all open to non- members of the club. The Junior group Coaching at Three Rivers with Sarah Bennett is open to children from 5-10 years of age regardless of experience with all equipment provided. The knowledge and expertise she has within the junior sector is growing annually aided by her Junior certification qualifications. I have four Golfing girl juniors who started with the Saturday group sessions who have now progressed to playing 6-9 holes joining in with the Essex Girls County Events. One of the young girls whom I have coached since the age of 5 is now playing on a regular basis joining in with the various County meetings throughout the year making numerous friends along the way. The top three players in the 2016/17 Porsche Order of Merit, Jason Levermore, James Scade and Brett Taylor had qualified for the final by winning the regional qualifier at Bush Hill Park in July. With the scores of Essex and Cheshire and North Wales level after two rounds of the PGA National course at The Belfry, the two lowest scorers, Jason Levermore from Essex and former European Tour player Phil Archer from Cheshire, were charged with making a second trip down the par-four first to settle the destiny of the trophy and ÂŁ4,000 first prize. With Levermore depositing his approach to no more than 10 feet from the flag and Archer landing his even closer, the odds appeared to favour the latter. But after Levermore rolled his putt home, Archer, a member of the triumphant Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team at Foxhills last month, missed his. The victory ensured Essex won the PGA in England and Wales Inter-County Championship for the first time and the county will be keen to defend the crown in 2018.

Report from Essex PGA Championships
A
fter the feast of scoring on the previous day in the Pro-Am, the weather made it slightly more difficult for the 36-hole Championship. The first round saw local Professional Lloyd Kennedy use his knowledge to set a stiff target of 4 under par 68 which was good enough for a 2 shot lead over Robert Coles. Jason Levermore came down to earth after his record breaking round in the ProAm and shot a 1 over par 73 leaving him with ground to make up in the afternoon. This he did by returning a 5 under par 67 to set a target of 4 under par for the 36 holes. Coles came in with a 2 under par round of 70 which meant that Kennedy needed to guard against any mistakes to lift the trophy for the second time. Another good round of 69 for Kennedy meant that the trophy was destined to stay at Woolston Manor for the next twelve months with a total score of 9 under par and a3 shot victory.
The Seniors trophy was shared by David Wood from Orsett Golf Club and Sean Carter from High Beach Golf Club both recording a 2-round total of 6 over par.

Levermore Shoots 11 Under Par!
Jason Levermore with winning team and Essex PGA Captain Chris Cutchie.
T
he PGA in Essex returned to Woolston Manor for the opening event of the new season and Jason Levermore ensured that the season opened with a bang! An incredible round of 11 under par 61 was enough to leave the rest of the field in his wake. Robert Coles, fresh from his PGA Cup winning team performance produced a very creditable 6 under par 66 but was left 5 shots behind the former PGA Cup player and Essex colleague Levermore. The Woolston Manor course had undergone
significant work during the summer but played exceptionally well as evidenced by the superb scoring. In joint 3rd place were local Professional Lloyd Kennedy and Steve Cipa who both recorded 4 under par 68. The team event not surprisingly was won by the team with Jason Levermore as they were 11 under par without adding any of the team scores. Their final score of 21 under par was enough to win by one shot from the local team with home Pro Kennedy.
T
The Better ball event was won by Chris Goddard from Romford Golf Club with his amateur partner Lawrence Kingsnorth with a better ball score of 8 under par 60. There was a five-way tie for second place which was eventually solved by various countbacks. The Professional competition was a close affair with Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club and Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club both returning 3 under par rounds of 65. In joint second place were James Scade and Mark Baker one shot behind. After the golf, Joe Crumpen’s son Ian spoke of his father’s pride in his association with the PGA and thanked everyone for their thoughts before presenting the prizes which he had kindly provided. The captain of Chelmsford Golf Club, Roger Scothern assisted with the prize giving as did Chris Cutchie, captain of the PGA in Essex.
Joe Crumpen Memorial Fourball
he PGA in Essex gathered in force at Chelmsford Golf Club to play a memorial fourball competition in honour of former starter and long- time loyal servant Joe Crumpen. The competition was played in glorious weather after early fog caused a brief delay and the scoring reflected the sunshine. There were two competitions, a better ball for Professional and amateur and the Professionals played for their own individual prize.
