Putt a Poppy

P

utt a poppy this November with these limited edition Titleist balls and help honour all those who have suffered or died in war, whilst showing your support for The Royal British Legion and their important work. The balls themselves are firm favourite Titleist Pro V1s, which promise ‘more short game spin and control with an even softer feel, penetrating trajectory for exceptional distance, and longlasting durability’ Most importantly you’ll leave the course with added feel good factor, whether you’ve carded

your best round or had a stinker, thanks to the fact all profits raised from the balls’ sale go directly to The Royal British Legion and their important work providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families. Available from The Royal British Legion’s online shop The Poppy Shop, www.poppyshop.org.uk, from just £14.99.

The Royal British Legion’s work is encapsulated in its motto: Live On – to the memory of the fallen and the future of the living. The Legion is the nation's biggest Armed Forces charity providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present and their, families. It is the national custodian of Remembrance and safeguards the Military Covenant between the nation and its Armed Forces. It is well known for the annual Poppy Appeal, and its emblem the red poppy. www.britishlegion.org.uk

ith a pretty good September weather wise (some heavy rain but limited) our sales of summer clothing have continued on and left us with a limited selection (now all 30% off or more). At last an accurate launch monitor that can show you exactly how your current clubs perform against the new technology. Clubs from Callaway, Cobra, Lynx, Ping, Taylormade, Titleist, Srixon and Wilson can be compared to find the most suitable ones for you. Whether your looking for more length, greater accuracy, higher launch, shaft suitability for your swing or filling those missing wedge gaps, Skytrak and the team at Nevada Bobs Colchester can help. All the information is projected on a 42 inch TV screen so you can see exactly what is happening in real time and 3D! Suitable for Woods, Hybrids, Irons and Wedges (right and left handed).

For the men Underarmour is leading the way but both Ping and Callaway are not far behind. With plenty of colours, different weights of tops for layering pieces, the choice is endless. Once again this has lead us to have our best September for over 13 years! I know it probably a dirty word but now’s time to think about ‘Christmas’ gifts as with all sizes in stock the selection will never be better. Finally on the opposite page we have featured the new range of Cleveland clubs. Having been out of the UK market (other than wedges) for some time they have now come back with some stunning product which has shown some excellent results on our in store tracking system. Log in to the website address attached for more details or call in and compare you clubs against this very exciting new product! -6-

Kennedy Clinches Crown at East Anglian Open

L

loyd Kennedy (Woolston Manor) won his first Order of Merit title thanks to a superb display in the East Anglian Open. Kennedy, 32, followed an opening 67 with a course record-equalling 64 to finish 11-under-par at The Rayleigh Club. The PGA Trainee, who held a full card for the European Tour in 2012, triumphed by an emphatic four-shot margin from Ian Campbell (Cheshunt Park). Runner-up Campbell was two shots clear of third-placed Chris Grant (Garon Park) after rounds of 67 and 68. He gave himself a host of chances on the back nine, converting three for birdie on his way to his best finish in an Order of Merit event since winning at Aldwickbury Park in May, 2016.

Mark Reaches Double Milestone

L

eading Essex Golf Coach Mark Sharman is celebrating a double milestone, 40 years since he gave his first golf lesson and the 21st Year of his association with Stock Brook in Billericay. “It’s hard to believe it was 40 years ago that I gave my first Lesson at Dartford Golf Club and shortly after I moved to Thorpe Hall as Head Assistant where I began to develop my Coaching and golf game. Even more unbelievable is that I began my association with Stock Brook 21 years ago and have had the privilege to witness it grow, develop and establish itself as a leading venue for an array of activities as well as golf ”.

During this time Mark has coached National, County and Club Champions and is still one of the few Coaches to have had Tour Players win on the USPGA Tour, European, European Challenge and Seniors Tour under his guidance. But still believes his best Coaching achievement is helping general golfers improve and to have 80% of beginners on the course by their 5th lesson. After more than 20 years travelling on Tour he decided to commit to Coaching locally full time so he could be around his family more and watch his children grow up. Which his done ever since with what some might view as a very different golf lesson based on a holistic approach “I will use whatever it takes to help the golfer to learn how to play better, I agree with Richard Bandler (co founder of NLP)” there is too much education and not enough learning””. As for the future “I currently love and plan to continue helping golfers clear up the myths and illusions that golf presents and permeates while helping them learn to play golf and take great pleasure watching those who commit to my advice, albeit being what some might consider unconventional and incorrect, continue to improve and enjoy their game” For further information contact Mark on 07788 591340 or e-mail mark@quantumgolf.co.uk -8-

Portelli Shoots a New Course Record as Juniors Steal the Show at the 2017 Saffron Walden Charity Pro Am

Charlie Carter, Glen Portelli Professional, Alex Sparrow, Jacob Gamble and Club Captain Gary Bonner.

T

he Saffron Walden Golf Club Charity Pro Am, now in its 5th year has developed into one of the best supported events in the Easter Region PGA calendar. This year’s event was supported by 20 local businesses and saw a field of 47 professionals and 141 amateurs take part. First prize in the professional category was won by Glen Portelli representing Old Fold Manor Golf Club with a new course record of 65, seven under par. No surprise that his team of Saffron Walden juniors, Jacob Gamble, Charlie Carter and Alex Sparrow won the team prize with a creditable score of 21 under par. As usual the course was in immaculate condition once again confirming its position as the no 1 course in the Cambridgeshire area. Since it’s re introduction 5 years ago the SWGC Pro Am has raised in excess of £40,000 for various local charities. This year the charity pro am will have raised in excess of £8,000 for the Captains nominated Charity Blue Smile, a Cambridge based organization providing specialist therapists who work with vulnerable children and their families in schools: this targeted early intervention can prevent more serious mental illness developing as children reach adolescence.

act the faster the clubhead is moving through impact the greater the ball speed (nb accepting all other areas being efficient ie path angle of decent or rise etc) the greater the distance. However I still hear golfers trying to go slower. This can only reduce the clubhead speed and the resulting shorter shots. In my observation many golfers underachieve not because of accuracy but the lack of distance the ball is flying. Over the winter issues when the serious golf is over for the season it would be a great idea to try to train more clubhead speed into your swing. This first article in the serious is one of my favourite practice and warm up drills. The swish drill. Quite simply grip the club upside down so that you are holding the shaft just above the clubhead as I am doing in the picture. Now swing and you should be able to hear a swishing sound as the club passes through the air. As you practice this each day you will be able to train yourself to make this swishing noise louder, and the optimum point of loudness is shown in the yellow box in the picture. Good luck and have fun Gary - 14 -

ithout doubt professional players are hitting the ball further in recent years but, in my opinion, this is actually hurting many club golfers as it has made their belief of how far they personally hit the ball is unrealistic.

Source: PGA Tour Website

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE KEY FACTORS BEHIND A PLAYERS INCREASE IN DISTANCE: Firstly, if you look at the modern professional player the vast majority are athletes. They train as athletes and look after their bodies as a top athlete should. They have fitness and nutritional trainers who advise on programs exclusive to their development. Not only does this add strength and flexibility it can also enhance the longevity of a players career (but not in all cases!!). Secondly, technology - launch monitors allow players and equipment to be fine tuned to get the optimum performance from every club in their bag. Not only are monitors excellent measuring tools they can also point the player, fitter and coach in the direction where optimum can be achieved. Thirdly, equipment - technology does move on and a professional player can certainly take advantage of this. Although many will play a more traditional iron, new driver technology can certainly add yardage. Note: this is to do with the internal weighting on many of the new drivers, faces on the latest drivers do not have a greater ‘spring’ effect than older drivers. Shafts have certainly moved on. Shaft measuring and quality control has never been

better, couple this with better materials and manufacturing techniques and the application of transferring energy from player to ball is far more efficient. At this point it would be unfair not to mention the golf ball, manufacturing is such that even the ball can be easily modified to suit an individual player. Many top Professional players have an entourage that follow them around, they are becoming like fine tuned machines with a specialist in every area of their game to try and gain an advantage on the rest of the field.

Is this good for golf? As a spectator sport I think it makes it far more exciting, as a participation sport club golfers need to keep their feet on the ground. If you think you can turn up on a Saturday morning after a few pints and a curry the night before and hit the ball as far as Dustin Johnson think again!

GET OUT OF THE BUNKERS! B

unkers are an area which many players quickly ruin a good round. If you could get out of a greenisde bunker in 1 most players would save themselves a number of shots very quickly. You don't have to be brilliant out of the bunkers but if most players to get up into the hole in 3 shots there would be a lot less card wrecking holes. The good news is there are just a few fundamentals you need to master.

ON COURSE GOLF CONSULTATION

Is your Golf on the course different to the Driving Range? If you would like to improve your game on the course, I am offering a 4 hole or 9 hole on a course session to a make a real difference to your scores. We can see what is happening where it counts and make a plan to improve your game. Cost is £40 for a 5 hole session and £55 for a 9 hole session. Please get in contact to book your consultation.

• Use the bounce – If you play the shot with a square face the difference between playing it with an open face is huge. Playing bunkers shot with an open face allows you to use the bounce which is your best friend out of the sand. It will allow you to get out of lots of different sands and those inevitable bad lies. • Hit the Sand & Hold the finish – Once you have opened the club and are using the bounce. The next thing to focus on is just hitting the sand a few inchs behind the ball and then moving through to a good finish.

• Have a bunker lesson – Bunkers just require a few key ideas where many people only have lessons on their long game.. A few sessions to ensure you have these key fundamentals will save you a lot of frustration and card wrecking holes. - 18 -

LCS Autumn Meeting September 2017 Chelmsford Golf Club

O

n a lovely mid September day, 68 ladies from 31 clubs across the county travelled to Chelmsford Golf Club to play in the Society of Essex Lady Captains last event of the season. The Autumn Meeting started a little later than normal but all the ladies got off the tee within the hour to enjoy the warm sunshine. The course was in superb condition but the undulating greens proved difficult for some. As usual, the prizes in the 4BBB competition were fiercely contested with many of the prizes decided on count back. Out of the 16 prizes (8 pairs) 15 different clubs across the county were represented. The day finished with a delicious meal which included a very delightful but indulgent trio of deserts. Our grateful thanks are extended to Pat Vincent, Lady President of Chelmsford Golf Club, who stood in for the Lady Captain as she was unavailable. Thanks also to Chelmsford Golf Club for hosting the event and to Bridget Logan for helping with the results of the competition. Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society) and

Pat Vincent (Lady President of Chelmsford Golf Club) brought the meeting to a close by presenting the prizes. In 3rd place with 38 points ocb were Pat Kettle (Colchester) & Maggie Stevenson (formerly North Weald), 2nd place also on 38 points were Penny Lipscomb (The Warren)& Jenny Frost (Forrester Park). In 1st place and winners of the Bradban Cup were Karen Charles (Colne Valley) & Jenny Hartnett (Crondon Park). Thank you to all our members for supporting the Society this year. We are in the process of finalising our programme of events for 2018. Dates and venues for next season will be posted on our website as soon as they are finalised. Notice of our AGM and applications for membership, meetings and friendly matches will be sent in the post to all current members and 2018 Lady Captains by the end of January. All information and forms will also be available on our website www.essexladycaptains.wordpress.com in early February.

What Helped Jack Nicklaus and Others to Hole Putts and Score Well?

I

n my last article I wrote about how Jack said “No matter your scoring goals, you can attain them faster by improving your putting”. Well, this month I want to focus on what helped Jack putt as well as he did and other factors that helped him and others. Firstly, one of the biggest things that helped “The Golden Bear” was what he thought before each putt. This was "I never missed a putt in my head". What makes that statement important was he used his mind over the matter of getting the ball into the hole. The power of the mind can be the difference between making a shot or situation great or potentially disastrous. This was shown at The Open this year with Jordan Speith who took a bad shot and turned it into something positive. I also saw this in The English Amateur Final when Todd Clements went from 5UP to A/S and then proceeded to play 6 holes in 5 Under and then win 2/1! Tiger Woods was another who could do amazing things, Severiano Ballesteros was a magician and could see things others couldn’t and also Annika Sorenstam who could just make things happen. What sets

all these players apart and countless others through Golf ’s History is the will and desire to get the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots. They didn’t allow fear or anxiety to cloud their judgement and had the clarity of thought to score well and low. When it comes to Putting it is whether we allow fear of missing the Putt or the fact we want to hole it. We all have a choice and it's making that choice between having success or failure in whatever form. Jack only saw the positive in what he was doing on the greens and due to his mindset his success was a prolific winner of Major Championships. For the many, it’s getting your handicap down, scoring your best round, winning a competition to get your name on the clubs board or just feeling good about yourself in what you are achieving. Our minds can be the difference and having a Total Strategy to Putting can help ourselves to think differently and be more assertive in getting the ball in the hole, by believing we will hole the Putt.

The 5p worth it’s weight in T

here are many specific areas which combine to produce an effective hold on the club, the technical components such as the positioning of the hands I know is well documented. I would still estimate about 75% of golfers could do with a refresher on this important area. This month in the Essex Golfer I would like to provide you with a very simple and inexpensive drill which reminds you of one in particular pressure point when adopting the hold. As indicated by the image below the “fleshy” part of the right thumb (right handed golfer) ideally should exert gentle pressure on the thumb of the left hand.

The 5p is gently placed on the left thumb ensuring the right hands covers it and remains in tact during your swing! Hit a few shots with the coin in position then a few shots without.

Gold

This one pressure point will help both hands to work in unison during the swing with maximum support of the club upon completion of the backswing. The feeling of passive hands works particularly well when executing any short game shots where clubface control is at a premium. The beauty of this drill is it can be carried out indoors without swinging a golf club which with the cooler temperatures approaching fast is the ideal Sarah Bennett practice for your winter MOT. - 24 -

Colchester’s Moy Cup

J

ulian Munson took charge in Colchester Golf Club’s Moy Cup last weekend. Playing off his eleven handicap Munson returned a score of plus five in this major boarded competition.

C

olchester Playgolf’s ladies staged their eighth annual mini-Solheim Cup competition, with the Lady Captain's team pitted up against the Vice-Captain's team. The matchplay format consisted of two singles matches, two foursomes and two four ball better ball. The ViceCaptain’s team recorded an emphatic win, which started when they took all of the first three matches, leaving no way back for the Captain’s side which fought valiantly to take 1 1/2 points out the final three matches to lose 4.5 to 1.5. The winning team consisted of Liz Schultz, Jeanette Shea, Lynne Southgate, Susan Wotton, Paula Smith,Vice Captain Pauline Jordan, Linda Smith, Jan Blackmore, Sally Pettitt and Pauline Coxon.

One of the oldest competitions in the club the Moy Cup, first played for 107 years ago, is played in a bogey format. Munson started with a birdie, which he then repeated on the eleventh and the fourteenth. He played startling golf, and without finishing doubles on the seventeenth and eighteenth where the pressure may well have told he could have been arrested. Daniel Harness (14) on plus 3 just crept ahead of Stephen Bozier (11) taking second and third, after a countback. Robert Svensson (15) returning plus two took fourth spot. Whilst on plus one came a phalanx of seven golfers lead by Barry Haley (12) followed by Joe Jackson (11), Andrew Jones (22), Shaun Holmes (10), Patrick Logan (15), Stuart Fisher (12), John Redden (7). - 25 -

Where is Your Focus?

W

hen faced with a narrow route to your target your ‘attention’ must be focused in a 'useful' place to increase your chances of success. I remember some twenty years ago, in the early stages of my professional PGA career, arriving on the 1st tee on the Duchess Course at Woburn looking down the hole and thinking WOW! … All I could see were very tall pine trees. A few moments later I spotted a narrow strip of green grass stretching between the pines that I was supposed to land my ball on! Although I didn’t realise at the time it was at that moment a significant part of the ‘Pre-Shot Routine’ I use and coach today was born.

This article focuses on the ‘aim’ part of the routine.

After initially only seeing pine trees when on the tee I made a conscious decision to look at the perfectly mown fairway. Have you noticed, even in general life, all too often we focus our attention on the hazards or the ‘things that may go wrong’ rather than what ‘could’ go right? The fairway, however, still looked very narrow! I then looked straight ahead as far as I could see on my intended aim line. In the distance I saw ... Yes a pine tree! But this one had a different shaped top to the one's next to it. Then holding my club up in front of me with it pointing to the tree (watch Justin Rose’s routine), I picked a spot on the ground in front of my golf ball on the line of the tree. Once I had addressed the ball I looked back at the tree in the far distance and that was ‘all’ I could see. ‘A Tunnel Vision’ to my target. Any thoughts of a narrow fairway lined with pines had gone which allowed me to commit to the shot instead of trying to ‘steer’ a shot into play. It worked! Summary; Focus your ‘attention’ on a target in the distance when aiming. This simple addition to your pre-shot routine will take your attention away from places you don’t want your ball to go and place your attention on a line you ‘do’ want your ball to go! This also works great when needing to clear hazards such as water!!

Waltz at Playgolf

P

laygolf’s Lady Captain, Maureen Dale, invited all members to join the Ladies’ Section for a fun day of golf. The format for the day was teams of three doing the 1,2,3 - 1,2,3 Playgolf Waltz Stableford. The format uses the best score at the first hole, the best two scores at the second hole and all three at the third continuing through 18 holes. There were also four Power Play holes, where players could opt to play to a difficult pin position for double points on that hole. A fantastic 94 points gave a runaway victory to the team consisting of Lynne Southgate, Ruth Amoss and Paula Smith. Roz Cole, Sue Patrick and Arthur Ramm were second and third spot went to Gina Macmillan, Jeff Coles and William Elder with 86 points. The best front and back 9 prizes went to Ann Longman, Judith Peeling and Lucy Sadler (42) and Geoff Tredgett, David Field and Jan Da Costa (56) respectively. Other prizes were awarded to Jeanette Shea, nearest the pin at the

third hole, Terry Skornia, nearest the pin at the 14th and Pip Sanderson for producing the straightest drive at the ninth. The halfway house served refreshments and homemade goodies to provide a welcome respite for the players. A Grand Raffle, Beat the Pro at the 16th and halfway house donations raised an amazing £620 for SENSE, the charity for deafblind children which is Maureen’s chosen charity for 2017.

First Step Golf Day Raises £13,850

T

he First Step Golf Day, in association with Frontier Voice & Data Ltd, raised over £13,850 for the charity based in Hornchurch, on Friday 8th September at Theydon Bois Golf Club. Over 80 players were welcomed for breakfast, 18 holes and a host of fundraising activities throughout the day. Due to the weather conditions, play was unfortunately suspended with only a few teams left on the course.

After dinner, golfers and evening guests enjoyed an entertaining speech by PGA Master Professional Gary Alliss. Presentations were awarded to the winning team from Frontier Voice & Data Ltd, led by Managing Director Peter Southgate and to the Individual

Winner Michael Green. Nolan Braterman, Business Development Director at Frontier; “We at Frontier were highly delighted to sponsor this year’s First Step golf day for the 4th consecutive year. It was a perfect day all round especially as we were able to raise a record amount for this wonderful charity”. Mark Halls, CEO of First Step; “There are so many people to thank – all our sponsors including Frontier Voice & Data, Roomes Furniture and Interiors and McDonald’s Romford, the whole team at Theydon Bois Golf Club, the volunteers who helped on the day and the golfers for their commitment despite the weather! First Step is reliant on fundraising and donations to support pre-school children with special needs and/or disabilities, and their families. Events like this give us the opportunity to meet new supporters, raise funds and awareness. We mark our 30th anniversary in 2018 and hope to encourage anyone interested in working with the charity to contact us on 01708 556355” To sign up for news of future First Step events visit firststep.org.uk or follow them on Twitter.

The format was a greensome/stableford and the standard of golf was exceptional. Bob and Dan would like to thank everyone who gave up their time to play golf and to all those who helped make it another successful fund-raising event. This year for the first-time evening entertainment was provided by Nat Augustin, who will be returning next year to provide another evening of music. Keith is The Winner

From left, Richard Withnall (John Thorogood Scratch Trophy), Mike Sutton (Victory Cup), Keith Newnham (Braiswick Cup) and Mike Morley (Braiswick Plate).

K

eith Newnham is the 2017 winner of Colchester Golf Golf Club Braiswick Cup. Played in September, this final is the culmination of a summer’s knockout matches. In a tight match going down to the last, it was the 17th where the match was decided. After never being far apart through 16 holes they stood on the 17th tee all square. Wright’s drive was long and down the middle with Newnham some way behind. Newnham put his ball on the back of the green with Wright some way to the right. Then it happened, nature intervened and the heavens opened. Newnham secured his par but Wright over judged his putt in the now deluge of

rain and with puddles forming on the green he ran his ball by the hole, then missed the one back. He was one down. Newnham played safe down the last with Wright chasing but a concession gave Newnham victory in an excellent and very tight final. Mike Sutton and Brendan Booth played in the final of the Victory Cup which also had a turning point. This time it was the 14th. Booth inexplicably had a six, which allowed Sutton to square the match. With a shot Sutton claimed the 15th followed quickly with a win on the 16th. A half on the 17th secured the Cup for Sutton.

Unlucky Colchester

C

olchester Golf Club lost on the fourth extra hole in the county final of the Youth Shield Scratch Competition against Chelmsford GC, played at Colne Valley.

With three of the five matches going into extra holes, this was indeed a nail biting final, with the result on a knife-edge until the very last shot of the day. Playing in handicap order Cai James was out first against Arron Edwards-Hill. James would normally have had four shots from Edwards-Hill but off scratch, it was no surprise that he went down 3&2.

Dan Nicholls however, from being one down on the 14th fought his way back to win on the last hole, one up and evening up the scores. The next three matches were all halved on the 18th. Under the rules of this competition, each game must be finished, so they all went into extra holes. Harry Hills lost out to a birdie on the first extra hole playing against Bella Jay, so first blood to Chelmsford. Colchester’s Max Maynard got the better of James Holt after Holt carved his ball out of bounds on the second extra hole, match all square again. Meanwhile, Josh Coleman was some two holes in front having a battle royal with Nathan Parrish. They had halved the first three extra holes and with tension, mounting with each shot the boys were feeling the pressure. It was on the fourth extra hole that an opportunity appeared, which Parrish slipped through to take the game and the tie for Chelmsford. An excellent final, with both teams giving their all, the result falling against Colchester by the narrowest of narrow margins.

Turner Cup at Colchester

T

he Turner Cup Family Foursomes Trophy at Colchester Golf Club was donated by the Turner family in 1974. It is always a keenly contested family competition and this year was no different. Stephen Bozier and his 14-year-old daughter Romy scored a commendable 36 points, and their score was cemented with four pars on their back nine holes. This resulted in their score overhauling Husband and Wife pairing Mark and

Hayley Joel on countback. Dave and Sam Latta were in close attendance in third with a creditable 34 points. Speaking of the Turner family the mother and son pairing of Sarah and Duncan Turner recently contested the Jubilee Cup Mixed Knockout Final. They were winners in a closely fought contest against the husband and wife pairing of Stephen and Linda Freeman.

IS GOLF A SPORT? T

his is a massive discussion amongst golfers. How can golf be a sport when you see such unconditioned players playing so well? How can golfers play 18 holes but never set foot in the gym? Play 18 holes after a beer and a bacon roll? All of these questions support golf not being a sport, however, I feel very very differently‌ Just one swing, one strike of the ball is like picking up the heaviest weight you can pick up in the gym once (1 rep max), it creates the same strain, the same force and the same demand on the body. This will be repeated for a minimum of 70 times per game! This is going in the gym and lifting your 1 rep max 70 times ... and we wonder why golfers are always injured? So from my perspective golf is a very demanding sport. When looking at the swing itself; it takes flexibility, strength and power to get into those positions and perform a good swing ... if you do not have the flexibility, strength and power you will get injured as over time and LOTS of repetition (70+ per game!) the body will not be able to take the strain. The most common places of injury are back, knees and hips ... the most over used parts of the body to perform the golf swing when no muscle, stability and flexibility is surrounding them. To achieve body alignment to avoid injury and increase performance is one of the most simple fundamentals to work on, yet the most neglected ...

- 38 -

the clubs, the technique and practice seems to come first which essentially will always fall short without body condition. In my opinion, golf as a sport is one of the most demanding there is.The injuries over time can be long term and life changing therefore find yourself a good personal trainer specialising in flexibility, core strength, strength and functional training and start looking after your body.Your golf will improve but most importantly your body will thank you for it and fingers crossed be able to play a lot.

TRENDYGOLF Adds The Feminine Touch

T

RENDYGOLF is adding a feminine touch to golf fashion with the launch of a specific women’s style section. The UK’s number-one golf fashion e-tailer is putting ladies first with tips, advice and inspiration for the broad range of premium quality brands available as they seek to add a more personal experience to online shopping.

Troon International Releases New App and Website

T

roon International has launched a new tee time booking app, which will ensure the company continues to set the benchmark for standards and service across its portfolio of venues. The app will initially concentrate on offering opportunities to secure rounds at Troon International venues within the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and India, with plans to eventually encompass all 44 Troon International managed facilities across Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. The app, titled ‘Troon International’, will allow the golfer a quick and easy method for booking tee times and will help grow the reputation of Troon’s service quality and impact within key markets, offering a simplified process and an instant comparison across the different venues the company has to offer. In addition to the app, Troon International has also launched a new website at international.troonteetimes.com which offers easy functionality and allows golfers to book multiple rounds at Troon International courses in one basket. In order to plan their golfing itineraries, website users are able to filter Troon International managed golf courses by course name, location, nearby hotels and book play and stay packages. Each course includes a full description on the site, providing detailed information on the layout and local attractions that surround it, along with an extensive list of general amenities that each one offers, from the delivery of corporate events to the quality of practice facilities available. Further courses from within the Troon International portfolio will be added over time. www.troongolf.com

A dedicated landing page has been added to the website and a specific contact is now available to deal with product requests on fit, style and sizing. With an extra layer of expertise to help customers make their buying decisions for their golfing wardrobe, women can make purchases safe in the knowledge they will be making a more informed choice. Laura Barrow, women’s buyer at TRENDYGOLF, said: “We want to inspire subscribers to dress well so they feel good and play even better. Before joining TRENDYGOLF, I personally understood the struggle that comes with trying to find good quality, well-fitted, golf clothing while adding a feminine touch to the golf course. “It’s not as easy it as should be for women golfers, so we want to be approachable and offer some genuine advice and provide a few ideas.” Barrow, a single-figure handicapper who has been with the company for four years, believes TRENDYGOLF’s wide range of brands offers huge variety to cater for all styles as it embraces the modernisation of golf fashion. She said: “A lot of golfers can look a bit similar and women generally don’t usually want to wear what someone else is wearing. They want something different. “We have a broad mix of women golfers among our customers and people have different tastes. But our brands like J.Lindeberg, Puma and Nike have been pioneers in introducing tailored, feminine fits and bolder colour schemes to allow women golfers to express their individual personality on the course.” www.trendygolf.com/style - 40 -

The Jubilee Cup

Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

The 2017 Jubilee Cup has its Champions! Well done Stoke by Nayland G&CC!

D

efeating last years’ winners, Crondon Park, Stoke by Nayland successfully won to the top spot on 24th September, and playing at Canons Brook Golf Club. In equal measure, commiserations to Brian English’s runner ups, and a hardy well done to Richard Bland’s successful team shown above receiving their individual player trophies. Richard is seen below here (on left) and being presented by the Jubilee Cup Trophy from Phil Redhead, Chairman.

Commiserations therefore to the erstwhile 2016 winners Crondon Park who were only defeated 5.3 to 3.5 winning points, and in a game which (as usual) really could have gone anyway as we watched it unfold in the afternoon of the 24th. Committee members Neil Mitchell and myself were on site at Canons Brook to ensure

we keep players and visitors updated on scores by using our roving scoreboards on club buggies, and helped even more by this years’ innovation of committee walkie-talkies for the latest results – something that went down well and mentioned by both Captains in their after dinner speeches!

The final also saw the completion of the Order of Merit. Whilst Semi and actual Finalist players clearly have the edge in potentially accumulating more match - 42 -

points, this was by no means a certainly. From a singles perspective, the pretty solid performance of Crondon’s Steve Chettleburgh in earlier rounds saw off any newcomers, despite him being beaten in his match by Dean Brace. What is even more laudable about this, is that Steve was in hospital the week before and was potentially to miss the final due to heart trouble/attack! – Steve would like to thanks Mrs Chettleburgh for letting him play.

For the Pairs OoM, the Essex G&CC player Brian Geer only very narrowly missed out on the top spot with a six out of six match wins, but was pipped to the post by a further win in his last match for SBNs Luke Bennett - who secured his final point (and therefore the OOM) with playing partner Liam Worsdell, following a classy shot out of the 16th hole greenside bunker, and to win 3&2 against Crondon’s Andy Simmonds and Craig Coy.

Full Singles listings can be seen at www.jubileecup.com/matches2017/playsin g.htm with runner up Mark Chaplin receiving his trophy here below from Neil.

Full Pairs listing can be seen at www.jubileecup.com/matches2017/playdo ub.htm and ultimate winner Luke Bennett (on left) can be seen here receiving his trophy from Neil Mitchell, Jubilee Committee member (on right).

And then Singles OoM winner Steve “Chets” Chettleburgh also receiving his trophy.

There are a large number of thanks required for the prep to the final and semi-finals. We had excellent support from Semi Final venues Colne Valley and Crondon Park - our absolute thanks to those clubs and their members in allowing us and the competitors access to the course, and the excellent efforts of the catering and green staff. Similarly to our Final venue Canons Brook Golf Club - not only a really well presented course for us, but brilliantly supported by Sandra Langton and Joanne in the office in helping us organise the day, and a further mention of the catering which started with a wonderful tiger bread baguette bacon roll, and finished with wonderful pie!. Also, a very special shout out to Canons Brook Club Captain Steve Cox who stayed with us all day to welcome opponents to his club in the morning, and to applaud them at the presentation event in the evening. Girls’ Golf is Rocking at Bridgestone Challenge Essex ambassadors Charley Hatley,Ysobel Lush and Sophie Wheel with Jack Senior.

G

irls’ golf has been rocking at the Bridgestone Challenge at Luton Hoo where teams of ambassadors from Bedfordshire and Essex showed off their skills. Girls Golf Rocks is the successful project run by England Golf and the Golf Foundation which encourages girls to take up the sport. It’s supported by ambassadors from county girls’ squads who help the newcomers and show them it’s a fun, friendly game. This time it was the turn of the ambassadors to have fun and to demonstrate their skills in the pro-am which preceded this week’s Challenge Tour event. Ysobel Lush, Sophie Wheeler and Charley Hatley from Essex teamed up with professional Jack Senior, while Bedfordshire’s Chanel Fontaine-Geary, Imogen Morton-King and Estelle Klausner were partnered by Richard Finch. Sophie, 15, gave a great demonstration of girl power when she won the long drive competition with her 232-yard tee shot on the first hole. The five-handicapper is a past winner of the Abraham Trophy, for England’s most improved girl golfer, and, with Ysobel, was one of the first ambassadors when Girls Golf Rocks started in Essex three years ago. “I’ve always loved it,” said 16-year-old Ysobel, who wants to be a PE teacher and who has helped the project collect three awards and was

individually Essex golfer of the year in 2016. Charley, 17, an ambassador for two years, loved the pro-am experience. “It’s been really good to play this course, which I might never be able to play again, and to play with a Tour player. It’s pretty amazing!” Their professional, Jack Senior is well versed in women’s golf, thanks to his girlfriend Bethany Garton, who has been Lancashire champion. Afterwards he said of his team: “The girls all played good, they were impressive – and they enjoyed it. That’s the big thing, if you don’t enjoy it, there’s no point doing it.” The Bedfordshire ambassadors made a similar impression on Richard Finch, a two-time winner on the European Tour. He commented: “They were very good. They hit some amazing shots and the way they behaved on the golf course was first class.” The girls picked up tips. Estelle, 14, was shown how to improve her putting stroke to reduce her 20 handicap, while ten-handicapper Chanel, 12, was advised not to rush her swing. Imogen, 16, who was runner-up in the PING women’s fourball betterball Grand Final the day before, enjoyed the sense of occasion she experienced over the two days. The 11-handicapper commented: “These big events give you a look at what really championships are like and you are treated more as a professional than an amateur.”

Playgolf Colchester Club Championship Report 2017

T

he 2017 Playgolf Colchester Club Championship was played over the bank holiday weekend, with excellent course conditions and lightening quick greens catching some of the field out. With the half-way hut fullystocked and manned by volunteers, mainly from the ladies’ section, the weekend was a great success, and an excellent showcase for the club. Day one is always about keeping in touch with the leaders and not making compound mistakes. Conor Garvey (8) did just this, managing his game well, to lead with gross 77, followed by Lee Kidger (5) with gross 78 and Elias Fantousi (14), Jack Blackman (9) and Jack Moutell (5) all carding gross 79.

of 74, to earn the title of club champion in great style. His final hole par closed the door on his closest competitors, all the braver as he had full knowledge that a bogey would force a playoff with Moutell and anything more would see him let the title slip. His feat was witnessed by an excited crowd surrounding the final hole. Gale’s superb final round effort saw him total 154 to take the title by a single shot from Jack Moutell on 155. Third place went to Jack Blackman on countback from Lee Kidger with both carding 157. Round two nett prizes went to Graham Adye who carded an outstanding nett 65 from Ken Todd (20) on countback from Steve Johnson (10) after both carded nett 66. Overall Nett winners were Graham Adye, who totalled a nett score of eight under handicap for the weekend to total 132. Ken Todd took second place from Steve Johnson on countback when both totalled 138.

Clacton Ladies Rule

The day one nett leaders were Elias Fantousi (14) with nett 65, Stephen Allen (12) on countback from Graham Adye (17) after both carded nett 68. Day two got underway, lead out by the nonqualifiers stableford shield, which saw Miguel Ruiz winning the competition, earning a shot handicap cut by carding an outstanding 40 points. Danny Lowther was second on 39 points with Mark Rolfe in third on 37 points. Many of those making the day one cut, started day two with the knowledge that one good round could see them in the mix. Tom Gale (7) showed great skill and determination to work his way past a three-shot deficit to clinch the title from a resurgent Jack Moutell, who had surged up the leader board to put himself in the driver’s seat with two holes to go. Gale’s superior ball-striking saw him record a level par back-nine, gross total

M

assive congratulations to Faye Trigg, the current Essex Ladies Champion & Katy Yates, the current Essex Girls Champion, who have now gone on to win the Munro Foursomes competition on Monday 11th September at Stockbrook Manor. The final was between Clacton-on-Sea GC and Chelmsford GC. The players representing Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club were Katy Yates (left) and Faye Trigg (right), it was an exciting final was on the cards, and the players did not disappoint with some excellent golf played by both teams. Well done girls, we are all so proud of you.

Essex v Norfolk v Suffolk

SEG U16 COUNTIES LEAGUE MATCH Diss Golf Club – Saturday 19th August 2017

T

he third and final of this year’s SEG U16 league matches between Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk was played at Diss Golf Club in Suffolk on Saturday 19th August. Conditions for golf were good but tricky it being warm and dry with a fresh wind blowing across the golf course making for some very challenging holes. The course which can only be described as a mixture of semi inland links and downs with gorse was in very good condition with exceptionally difficult, undulating greens and slick putting surfaces. The format was the established 8 x 3 way match play with two results from each 3 ball. All teams arrived in good time for the 1pm first tee time however Norfolk were unfortunately a man down due to a late illness related withdrawal therefor they conceded the first match to Essex and Suffolk. As in previous matches Norfolk competed well but were no match through the side for the Essex team who again ran out comfortable winners. Suffolk as expected were a different matter providing strong competition, all but one match could have gone either way late into the back 9 holes, eventually Essex triumphed in 3 of the first 4 matches all by slender margins. Joe Whiting had already completed an emphatic victory in game 6 which left it to debutant Carter Rowe to close out game 7 which he duly did giving us the 5 points required for victory and qualification to the regional finals. Final match scores; Essex 6.5 – Norfolk 1.5 Suffolk 3 – Essex 5 Our thanks go to Diss for hosting the match and for their outstanding hospitality, to Club Pro Nigel Taylor for all of his help and to our fellow officials from Suffolk and Norfolk. 6<'$ $?%7O%/$ 63)%,(N $K)2"( +"')L%+ :Z%&:'U P" 33% ;2 7Q 7YW>TWA> ?$ 1"2()3

VETERANS TROPHY Burnham on Crouch Golf Club – 22nd August 2017

T

he 2017 competition was hosted by Burnham-onCrouch Golf Club. The weather was fine with bursts of bright sunshine but at times a cool breeze was looking to play havoc with exposed parts of the course. The course was in excellent condition with a field of 63 players enjoying the competition. There are two trophies presented at this over 55’s event, the main one for the overall winner, The Veterans Trophy, and the second for the best score returned by a player who is over 70 years of age, the Over 70’s Salver. The scoring was tough as the winds caught a number of players out midway into their round. 35 points was best in for some time, Colin Brett (The Rayleigh Club) & Donald McGilvray (Thorndon Park) both managing to pip the rest of the field. Donald just beating Colin on Countback to secure third place. Paul Neale (Colne Valley) returned a respectable 37 points Mike Sutton (Colchester), Roger Walmsley (EGU President) after just 17 on the way out which and John Sutton (Brentwood). inluded a no score on the par 4, 3rd hole and also later in his round on the 12th. Despite the twelfth, he managed 20 points for his back nine, which secured him 2nd place in the over 55’s event. A steady round from Mike Sutton (Colchester), saw points on all of his 18 holes, with only three holes where he scored just the one point. This meant, by picking up three points on 6 of his remaining holes he managed to return with an impressive score of 39 points, winning the Championship by two points from Paul Neale. In the over 70’s event, John Sutton (Brentwood) took the Over 70’s Salver as he returned with a score of 33points. John took this year's title on countback from Richard Taylor (Five Lakes) who also managed 33 points. Our thanks to The Burnham on Crouch Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and wellprepared course, and to their Men’s Captain David Elphinstone, who presented all the prizes following the evening meal along with our President, Roger Walmsley. - 48 -

County Match

ESSEX v BEDFORDSHIRE Chelmsford Golf Club – Sunday 3rd September 2017

T

he final league match of the season saw Essex at home against Bedfordshire. Only a win would see us top the North section of the league and progress to the league final in October. Whilst Beds were at the bottom of the league group this didn’t do justice to the quality of the players in the side and they had put Top; Michael Gilbert,Todd Clements,Will Percival, Brandon Meads, Phil Hulse and up spirited opposition in Bob Ward. Bottom; Ali Plumb, Arron Edwards-Hill, Jay Beisser (Captain),Taylor Carter their previous games. So and Andy May. we had no intention of viewing this as a foregone conclusion and selected probably our strongest county side of the season which included current English Amateur Champion Todd Clements for the first time this year in a league match in addition to 3 home Chelmsford players in Brandon Meads, Arron Edwards-Hill and Ali Plumb. The morning foursomes reflected our strength and after 9 holes we were up in 3 games and all square in the other, albeit by slender margins. This dominance was maintained on the back 9 and lunch arrived with Essex leading 3 ½ to ½ . The afternoon singles demonstrated the desire to win by Essex with the 3 points required to win the tie arriving in quick style. First past the post was Arron with a fine 6&4 win over Paul Kenna closely followed by Taylor’s 5&4 win over Dan Jones and County Captain Jay Beisser beating Ryan Craig 2&1. Todd Clements leading off. The remaining matches were all pretty close with only Will Percival losing his game to a birdie on the last hole against Beds number one Scott Armitage. So, a fantastic win which sees Essex win the league from BB&O with a superior games won record and takes us to the final against Surrey at Farleigh Golf Club on October 8th. Special mention again to our hosts Chelmsford Golf Club for the magnificent condition of the course and the hospitality given to ourselves and guests Bedfordshire. SENIORS RETAIN SOUTHERN COUNTIES FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP

O

n a fine late September day Denham Golf Club played host to the Southern Counties Foursomes Championship. Essex had won through to this final by virtue of their winning the South Eastern Group Qualifing Competition and also in the final were Sussex who had won the Southern Group, Wiltshire the South Western Group and Cambridgeshire the East Anglian Group. The Essex team were anxious to give a good account of them-selves in defence of the title they won last year. The morning matches saw us with our noses in front with a convincing 4 wins and only one loss. Our main threat appeared to be from Sussex who had 3 wins. - 50 -

Essex County News email: office@essexgolfunion.org

The afternoon started well and after 9 we were up in 4 games and only down in one. As the day wore on Sussex were having some large wins and finally Jeff Mathewson and Glynn Williams were walking up the 18th having won 4 and 3. Then Kevin Saunders and Geoff King turned in with a 3 and 1 victory, Next to appear was Steve Rooney and mark Whitten who had lost their match to Sussex. Thing were tense at this stage for if Sussex had won all their matches they could steal our title. The tension was eased somewhat when Michael Partridge and new recruit to the side Martin Lewis appeared having won 4 and 3. At this stage Chris Aukett and Mark Lazarus were going up 18 all square, a superb chip in and a safe putt and they had won 1 up The title was ours with 8 wins on the day. Second was Sussex with 6 ½ wins. Third Cambridgeshire with 4 wins. Fourth Wiltshire with 1 ½ wins. Team: Chris Aukett, Boyce Hill. Mark Lazarus, Romford. Steve Rooney, Orsett. Mark Whitten, Orsett. Kevin Saunders, Thorndon Park. Geoff King, West Essex. Jeff Matthewson, Bentley. Glynn Williams, Crondon Park. Michael Partridge, Thorndon Park. Martin Lewis, Thorndon Park.

The event was the final competition in the race to Essex’s Order of Merit, with three players leading the way in the final group, Jay Beisser from The Rayleigh Club, leading the way, 3 points ahead of Curtis Knipes of Abridge, with Curtis just 3 points ahead of Arron Edwards-Hill from Chelmsford. The morning was bright but brisk, with a cutting wind first thing. The course was in great condition but the early signs suggested scoring was not that easy, as there were some tricky pin positions and the wind was playing havoc on some of the tighter holes. Just two players broke par in the morning round, Will Percival from Orsett and Callum Newton, also representing Orsett. They both returned scores of 68 (-1) whilst the next best was 70 (+1) by Curtis Knipes. Beisser having started on the 10th, found himself 2 under par having started with a brace of birdies, only to follow it up with a par, then a 10 on a par four. Opening the door to the Championship as well as the OOM as his two playing partners who were chasing him down. He fought his way round to a 75 (+6). The afternoon round looked like it could present some exciting golf, with it all to play for. Curtis Knipes carded a one under par 68 in the afternoon, which could have been so much better as he double bogeyed the 17th to go back to level par for the afternoon and just 1 over for the tournament. The birdie on 18 meant he was on Level for the day and a score to be proud of in such tricky conditions. Arron Edwards-Hill managed just the one birdie in the afternoon and carded a 74 (+5). This was enough to guarantee he was not going to lift the OOM trophy this year, despite a fantastic season, we are sure it will not be long until Arron wins the Essex OOM. Harry Moncur (Abridge) managed a level par afternoon round to climb the board finishing in 5th position on his own with a +5 total for the day. Callum Newton couldn’t match his morning round of one under but did manage a very steady round of 71 (+2) to secure third place on his own for a one over total of 139. Meanwhile Jay Beisser was fighting hard to regain control of the OOM, carding 6 birdies and an eagle in his afternoon round. Unfortunately, a treble and two bogeys meant the best he could manage was a 66 (-3). The lowest round of the day and sufficient to finish in 4th position on 141 (+3) for the Championship, three shots behind Curtis Knipes. The consistency of Will Percival, following his one under 68 with a level par 69 in the afternoon was enough to pip Curtis, not only costing Curtis the Upminster Bowl but also denying him the Seasons OOM crown by just one point behind Jay Beisser. Unlucky Curtis, another talented youngster with time on his side, one another that will be an OOM contender in years to come. Congratulations Will Percival on a great performance and winning the Upminster Bowl. The Upminster Trophy was won by the 3rd time in a row, OOM Champion Jay Beisser. The Net Competition was won by youngster Matthew O’Connor (Abridge) with a fabulous 2 under par 136, which will see his handicap drop considerably. Great golf Matthew. Our thanks, as always to Upminster Golf Club, for their hospitality and we look forward to returning next year. - 52 -

THE ROMFORD TROPHY

A

bright and fresh September morning welcomed 59 competitors as they arrived at Romford Golf Club to compete for the Romford Trophy. The course looked to be in great shape considering the issues this year’s weather and Romford’s poor luck with machinery has caused. The greenkeeping team had no doubt worked extremely hard leading up to the event to present the course in such great condition. The condition of the course must have influenced the field as the good scores were being returned from both ends of the field. Eight competitors broke par in the morning with Alexander Woodward (Boyce Hill) & Jason Renton (Basildon) returning one under par scores of 70. One in front with scores of 69 were Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) & County Champion Curtis Knipes (Abridge). Daniel Nicholls (Colchester) returned ahead of that group by one shot, with a superbly put together round of 2 under par 68. Brandon Meads (Chelmsford) carded a morning score of 67 which was only good enough to secure second place going into lunch as the winner of the North of England Youths, Essex Boys Championship & the Cliffords Trophy continued his fantastic form by recording a 65 which included 5 birdies and an eagle with just one blemish on his card. The afternoon saw another seven scores better than the par of 71. Only three of the players in the morning managed to repeat the under-par form of the morning, despite some great efforts. William Percival (Orsett) returned a 3 under par score of 68 to finish on 139 (-3) for the day, beating Brandon Meads on Countback who couldn’t match his morning form by returning a 1 over par 72 in the afternoon. Jay Beisser continued his consistent form by improving on his morning’s 69 by one shot resulting in a total 137 (-5). County Champion Curtis Knipes returned a 67 (-4) in the afternoon securing second spot with a total of 136 (-6). Maintaining his winning ways this season was Arron Edwards-Hill, whose solid round of 69 (-2) was enough to secure a winning margin of two shots as he finished on 134 (-8) for the day. Congratulations Arron, a fantastic season so far. Daniel Nicholls’ performance was good enough to take second place in the net competition with a net 134. Jake Wells was a shot better with a net 133 (-9) which meant he wins the net competition this year after dropping just one shot over the whole day playing off a handicap of 5. Promising that both Jake and Daniel are both under 16 years of age and have undoubtedly bright futures in golf. Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks, as always to Romford Golf Club for hosting the event and their exceptional hospitality. We now await the conclusion of this year’s Order of Merit which concludes at Upminster Golf Club, where the top four in this event are also the top four in the running for the Order of Merit Trophy 2017. - 53 -

Thorpe Hall v The Warren

2017 LESLIE F WOOD CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Romford Golf Club – Sunday 3rd September

T

he morning foursomes commenced in cool conditions, which remained a challenge to the players all day as a steady breeze blew across the course. Though the sense of the occasion created a tense atmosphere around the first tee for the players of both The Warren and Thorpe Hall teams. All matches remained close during the first nine holes apart from the first match out, where the Warren pair made a solid start, and were 4 up at the turn. Leslie Wood Winners 2017 – The Warren. With slim leads being held by one side or the other in the remaining matches neither side held the upper hand. Two matches eventually concluded on the 17th green with one win for each team, and the first match out finished early in favour of The Warren. The other two matches both went down the 18th, again finally concluding with a win for each team, which meant that The Warren held a slender 3-2 lead at lunch. In the afternoon singles The Warren appeared to start the strongest building a lead in 4 of the first 5 matches out. Match 2 was the first to finish with a comfortable win to The Warren, but the top match was a close affair all the way round with the match eventually going down the 18th all square. Both players laid up short of the 18th green in two, from where Geoff Shakespear holed his 140-yard approach to give The Warren a valuable win. The sizeable support for both teams were being treated to some excellent matchplay golf by players from both teams. As matches continued to draw to a conclusion it was the team from The Warren who managed to edge ahead in enough matches for them to sense victory. In match 8 Rob Whiting finally closed out a hard fought encounter to give The Warren 8 points, and victory in a keenly contested final. The final was played in great spirit, both Clubs can be proud of the efforts of their teams. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Romford Golf Club for hosting the event and also the many spectators who came to enthusiastically support both teams. - 54 -

Theydon Bois v Thorndon Park

ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Chelmsford Golf Club –Wednesday 6th September

T

he 2017 Seniors Team Championship was played at Chelmsford Golf Club on 6th September between Theydon Bois and Thorndon Park Golf Clubs. The Chelmsford course was in excellent condition and reasonable weather for a late summer afternoon provided a good setting for an afternoon of exciting matchplay golf. Thorndon Park made a good start with Kevin Saunders playing excellent golf to build a steadily increasing lead, eventually culminating in a 6&5 win for Thordon Park. Two of the first four matches went to the 18th hole reflecting a very competitive final, but by the time the first seven matches had concluded Thorndon Park were left with a 5 - 2 lead. With 6 points needed to win the final Thorndon Park were tantalisingly close to victory and Theydon Bois needed to up their game. In match 8, Robin Bond from Theydon Bois held a healthy lead most of the way round, but Richard Collins fought back over the closing holes with some tidy golf. This match eventually went down the 18th where Robin got up and down from a greenside bunker to hold on for a 1 up victory. The lower order was producing exactly what Theydon Bois needed, and with wins in games 9 and 10, the match score stood at 5 – 5, with only the last match out on the course. Don McGilvray, Thorndon Park, held a 4 up lead through 14 holes which suggested the final would soon be settled in his favour, but his opponent, Dick       Turner, had other ideas. ESSEX FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP

T

he 2017 Essex Foursomes was hosted by Braintree Golf Club. The silver tankards which are presented to the winners, were provided to the Essex Golf Union by Mr G E Larman, a Past Captain of Rochford Hundred Golf Club and President of the EGU in 1932. This year a total of 45 teams took part from 33 Essex Clubs. A fantastic representation for what has maintained to be one of our most prestigious events of the calendar. The Weather did not disappoint, providing a warm September morning for the competitors. The course had undergone some extensive improvements just a week or two before the event, which included a new irrigation system installation for tees, greens and fairway watering. Despite this work, the course was in exceptional condition and the surfaces were among the best that our competitors had competed on all season. The early leaders in the morning were home players Callum Pipe & James Hedger (Braintree) who returned a great score of 68 (-2). Most of the field struggled with some breezy conditions, and until the penultimate group returned in from the course it didn’t look like anyone could improve on a three-shot difference that Callum Newton and Cassidy Steffens (Orsett) had managed. Their 71 (+1) looked like it was going to secure second place going in to the afternoon round. Then the pair of Ben Wyatt & Jay Beisser returned with a fantastic score of 65 (-5) which meant that there was a 6-shot difference between 1st and 3rd. In 4th position there were two pairings on 72 (+2), Dan Vaughan & Joe Green (Orsett) and Joshua Cardy & Joshua Read (Three Rivers) with a whole group on 73 (+3). As the wind got up for the afternoon round, the conditions proved slightly tougher with no pair breaking par, however it appeared to be about damage limitation, with the second-place pairing of Callum Pipe & James Hedger struggling the most from the leading 5 groups. They returned a score of 78 (+8) leaving them on 146 (+6) for their days work. A shot back on 147 (+7) were Joshua Read & Joshua Cardy after their afternoon round of 75. A further 4 pairings finished on 146 alongside the Braintree pairing, these included; Callum Newton & Cassidy Steffens (Orsett), Andrew Reynolds & Daniel Riley Bourne (The Essex), Jason Renton & Ben Tobin (Basildon) and last year’s winners David Abbott & Joe Dobbyn (Boyce Hill). With these five pairings, all sharing first place with just two groups to come in it was proving to be an exciting finish. Unfortunately for the ten players already in, the penultimate group were to upset the field once more. Dan Vaughan & Joe Green (Orsett) returned a score a shot better than their morning effort resulting in a 72+71 for 143 (+3) and guaranteeing second place by three shots. Their playing partners Ben and Jay couldn’t match their form of the morning’s 65 but did manage to equal Dan and Joe’s 71, resulting in a 3 shot Dan Vaughan and Joe Green. victory on 136 (-4) for the day. Basildon v Orsett

THORNTON CHALLENGE CUP FINAL 2017 Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Sunday 10th September

T

he 2017 final was played on 10th September between Basildon and the 2016 winners, Orsett, on a very well presented Thorpe Hall golf course. The morning foursomes commenced in cool but sunny autumnal conditions with little breeze to trouble the players. The teams were well known to each other and keen to make an early impression. Orsett made quick headway in the first match out in the morning, with Will Percival and Don Vidgeon building a comfortable 4 up lead at the halfway stage. The other matches were much closer at the turn, but the balance was slightly in favour of Orsett. As the morning started to draw to a close Orsett won the first two matches with comfortable wins. Match 3 had been a very close match until the middle of the back nine, but some good golf from the pairing of Mark Whitten and Cassidy Steffens gave Orsett a narrow lead which they held on to for an eventual 3&1 victory. Matches 4 and 5 went all the way to the 18th hole, in match 4 Josh and Ben Tobin held a 1up advantage on the 18th tee for Basildon. Ben drove his tee shot pin high on the par four hole, but nearly into the flower beds by the Clubhouse, Josh then played an excellent recovery pitch over trees to the back of the green and Ben holed from 35 feet for a birdie 3 to close out the match 2up. Match 5 was less adventurous with Orsett making a regulation four on the 18th for a 2up victory. Both teams headed for lunch with Orsett pleased with the morning outcome, holding a 4 – 1 lead. By the time the afternoon singles commenced the weather had taken a turn for the worse, a breeze had started to blow and this brought in some heavy showers throughout the afternoon. Basildon needed some early positive results in the singles to take back the momentum from Orsett. In match 1 Jason Renton delivered exactly what they needed, a 4&2 victory over Will Percival. The 100+ supporters were being treated to some excellent matchplay golf, and with Josh Tobin, Ben Tobin and Gary Fenner all delivering further Basildon victories, to two early victories for Orsett by Dan Vaughan and Callum Newton, the score looked much tighter at 6 – 5 to Orsett. Attention turned to the remaining four matches out on the course,    with Mike Kavanagh closing out his match with Mark Whitten on the 18th in favour of Basildon, news came from out on the course that Team Captain Steve Rooney had comfortably won match 10 for Orsett. The competition was heading towards a very tense finale with Orsett holding a slender lead within a point of victory. Match 8 went to the 16th tee with Don Vidgeon of Orsett now holding a 3 hole advantage, his par 3 on that hole was all that was required to make Orsett the 2017 champions. The final match result was 8½ – 6½ in Orsett’s favour. It was an excellent day of golf played between two teams who clearly had great respect for each other, our thanks to Thorpe Hall for hosting the match and to all the spectators for providing encouragement to both teams throughout the day. 

Boyce Hill v Woolston Manor

NORMAN PLUM TROPHY FINAL 2017 Colne Valley Golf Club – Sunday 17th September

T

he 2017 Norman Plum Trophy Final between Boyce Hill and Woolston Manor was played at Colne Valley Golf Club on a pleasant late summer’s day, the Essex Golf Union Finals Day on 17th September. All six matches were closely fought as they passed the half way mark, with neither team able to develop a strong position overall. The first match remained in the balance right to the finish on the final green, with both sides ending up having to be satisfied with a half point. In the next two matches the balance swayed towards Woolston Manor as they edged both matches, but Boyce Hill closed out match four in their favour to keep them in the hunt for the trophy. Neither side could take control of match five, but Boyce Hill Team Captain, Lindsay Rungasamy, and playing partner Laurie Scaniglia-Cooke drew the two teams level with a 3&2 victory. So, it all came down to the last match on the course heading up the 18th hole, and in front of a large crowd Boyce Hill closed out the match 1up, with the final putt of a very exciting contest. It was a great match for the large group of spectators from both Clubs to enjoy. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Colne Valley Golf Club for hosting the event and their excellent hospitality, and to the spectators who came from opposite ends of the County to support their teams. - 59 -
