Welcome to academic year 2022 2023!

It is with joy and excitement that we welcome everyone to this academic year! We are thrilled to have more new members of the Global Sevilla family for face-to-face learning. Although we are still in the tail end of the pandemic, everyone’s support and cooperation in following the health protocols will surely help to eradicate the Covid cases in our school, and the silver lining of adjusting back to onsite learning will be enjoyed by everyone again soon.

We are fortunate to have great teachers, staff, and supportive parents to ensure students' balance between education and character development. In addition, different community services, extra curricular activities, and mindfulness and well being programs will be strengthened to give better opportunities for the optimum development of students. May this year be a productive and meaningful learning journey as we bring to life this year’s theme “Educating Minds, Developing Hearts”.

In the past three years, Eunoia has never failed to surprise us with its outstanding editions. It serves as a tool to get a glimpse of our school’s events and achievements on an impressive and enjoyable platform. In this pursuit of excellence, it is with great pride that I congratulate the OSIS’ Journalistic Publication department for this excellent masterpiece about fashion. This edition will surely ignite readers’ creativity and consciousness on how they can present themselves in the most appropriate way for the occasion they are in.

As Donatella Versace says, “Fashion is about dreaming and making other people dream”.

On behalf of all teachers and staff, we wish you happiness and success as you mindfully embark upon the learning journey of this academic year.

Fashion is truly a magnificent aspect of art that allows us to take selfexpression to a whole new extent. Fashion not only reflects our personality, it reflects our mood, style, and overall, who we are as a person. Each and every one of us has our own fashion sense, and that’s what makes us unique.

Okay, moving past that cliché opening, I do moderately agree that someone’s fashion sense is able to reflect their personality. “Oh this person is wearing bright and flashy colors” chances are that person probably has a bubbly personality, or maybe not at all! Someone could be wearing dark colors and still have a bubbly personality, someone could be wearing extravagant clothing and still be shy to talk to people. So really, does our fashion sense reflect who we are as a person? Well the answer is: it often does!

We usually dress based on our style of interest, or or on how we feel at that time. That means a bigger portion of the clothes we wear do actually represent our mood and personality, except for the days where our mood might have shifted, or maybe the days where we just want a change in style and try out new looks.

Not only that, the way we interpret other people’s fashion sense also tells us a whole lot about ourselves. You see someone walking by and the first thing you notice is that they’re wearing head-to-toe designer clothingwhat is your first assumption of them? Are you going to judge them based on this? It’s undeniable that some people judge others based on what they wear, at least before they get to know one another. When meeting new people or simply seeing strangers pass by it’s common to judge them based on our preconceptions.

So what do you think about this topic of fashion? If it has drawn your interest, then this issue is perfect for you! In this issue we cover all sorts of interesting topics revolving around fashion, which will hopefully be enjoyed by all our readers.

Our Graduation Day was held to recognize the accomplishments of the Grade 10 and Grade 12 students, and also the Grade 9 students for their Ujian Sekolah rankings

During the bright afternoon of June 17th 2022, the graduation of the year 2021 2022 took place. We were graced with heartfelt speeches from Mr. Michael Thia, the school superintendent, as well as two student representatives, Caroline from Grade 12 and Elsey from Grade 10. First, we had our mindfulness session, then the singing of our school songs and National Anthem The first announcements were then made for the Grade 10 graduates, followed by the announcements for Grade 12 graduates.

Following that, awards much like ones on Recognition Day were given. Firstly, for Grade 10 students we had Ben Rui Avellino, who achieved highest in additional math and chemistry; Elsey Djaparily Chan, who achieved highest in mathematics and Chinese mandarin; Jason Fijiano, who achieved highest in Music; Lord Daemien Firston, who achieved highest in English as a second language, business studies, physical education, PPKn, and the Most Improved Student Award; Nareswari Maritza Bhanuwati, who achieved highest in first language english, biology, physics, economics, literature in english and arts and design; Kezia Adeline, who achieved the Student Leadership Award; and lastly, Valieza Susanto, who achieved highest in Bahasa Indonesia and the Model Student Award.

Next the awardees for Grade 12 were announced. We had Avansya Lukyana Putra, who achieved highest in english (IPS), economics (IPS), sociology (IPS), and chinese mandarin; Caroline Falisha Fitz Cherani, who achieved highest in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, bahasa Indonesia,PPKn, and the Model Student Award; Dinakara Hapsari Suharno, who achieved highest in english general paper and music; Izat Syauqan Rasyad, who achieved highest in economics, business, and Student Leadership Award. There were also Rizky Guntoro, who achieved highest in geography (IPS), history (IPS) and physical education; Salwa Sausan Zaini, who achieved highest in Mathematics (IPS) and ICT; and lastly, Sean Matthew Prayuda, who received the Most Improved Student Award.

After the announcement for the awardees we moved on to the rankings for Ujian Sekolah. Firstly the top 5 from grade 12 were given out: Caroline Falisha Fitz Cherani ranking first, Kyra Risanti Rusly second, Rizky Guntoro ranking third, Dinakara Hapsari Suharno ranking fourth, and Izat Syauqan Rasyad ranking fifth.

Last but not least, the top 10 students of Grade 9 who achieved highest in Ujian Sekolah were presented. Among them were Tanisha Richelle Claire who ranked first, Arthur Atimano Nursalim who ranked second, and Candice Christabel who ranked third

Recognition Day is an annual occasion where students are given awards for their academic hard work, perseverance and determination Students are recognized for other qualities like effort, improvement, and cooperation as well, which can increase self confidence, a sense of accomplishment, and generate respect among their peers Recognition Day is a chance for the teachers to recognize not only the academic achievements, but also the small improvements from the students when it comes to discipline issues, behavior and their study habits

Recognition Day was held at our school on Thursday, 15 June 2022, organized by our VP for international curriculum, Mr. Mark Ferdinand The event started with a mindfulness session that was led by Ms Natasha Fredlina Ginting, then we sang our school song and our National Anthem ‘Indonesia Raya’. This is followed by an inspirational speech from our dear principal, Mr Christopher Amargo Then the wonderful students who had done such amazing jobs the previous year received their rewards.

For the Students Leadership Award, we had Shane Natalie The from Grade 7, Celine Nathania Kiswanto from Grade 8, Arthur Atinamo Nursalim from Grade 9, and Darin Putra Bagaskara from Grade 11. For the most improved students awards, we had Nicole Vita Rahardja from Grade 7, Herfeld Dee from Grade 8, Ravi Hilmifuad Purnama from Grade 9, and Ravelin Roseline Hariyanto from Grade 11 Last but not least, we had the Model Student Award. Congratulations to Shane Natalie The from Grade 7, Celine Nathania Kiswanto from Grade 8, Arthur Atimano Nursalim from Grade 9, and Dulce Amor Santia from Grade 11 on getting this The remarkable event was closed off at 11.30AM with a speech by our vice principal for national curriculum, Mr Stanislaus Ola.

Joanne Andreas, a young fashion designer based in Surabaya, developed an interest in design and crafts at a very early age. Joanne often observed her mother, who is a fashion designer herself, and she began creating little crafts at the age of 4. She learned how to stitch by hand, make little dolls, and she enjoyed scrapbooking.

As she grew older, she took more of an interest in her mother’s drawings, and at the age of 8 she too started drawing and learned from her mother. As she learned more about it she’d become more and more intrigued. At this point in her life Joanne focused on illustrating clothing and human figures, and she learned how to sew utilizing a sewing machine. She then started to create clothing for kids and expressed her interest in being able to create what kids want to wear (as she herself was a kid). Joanne began to sell her designs along with accessories such as bandanas and hair clips. She started to learn about women figures, and created clothing for women at the age of 12.

Joanne admits that being born to a fashion designer, she was often accused of having her career handed to her by her mother. But in reality she had learned most of her skills through fashion school. Her mother was often a judge for various fashion competitions, not only in Surabaya but also in Jakarta and other countries. This made it difficult for her as whenever she joined a competition that had correlation with her mother, as she could not be chosen as the winner due to possible accusations being made that she had won because of her mother’s influence.

She recalled that her first achievement was when she became a judge for a modeling competition when she was in 4th grade. She had entered a lot of fashion show competitions, and won first place at Surabaya Fashion Parade 2013. Joanne mentioned that at the time she was not allowed to join the competition as it had a minimum age of 17 while she was only 12 years old. However, after reviewing her designs they had agreed to accept her into the competition. She had participated in a lot of runways at malls all around Surabaya, and would get interviews for magazines, newspapers, and sometimes even television.

Back then Joanne was heavily into makeup, and joined a course for it in order to fulfill her dream to be a makeup artist. As she went along the journey she realized that it wasn't her passion, although she still enjoyed working with makeup and would occasionally create makeup looks on her models for photoshoots. However, Joanne never gave up her interest in the fashion world.

She observed different eras of fashion and how they are constantly rotating over the years. One of her favorite eras is the Dior era, when women started to develop their own style. In the old days women’s choices of clothing were limited, but during the war women began to wear their husband’s uniforms as it was more practical. This was the first time women were allowed to wear pants, whereas before they were only allowed to wear ball gowns. Joanne expressed her liking for the Dior “New Look” and how it revolutionized the fashion industry.

Starting off with kids wear, Joanne then moved on to teenage wear, and eventually to women’s wear which is her current specialty and main focus (though she still dabbles in kids and teenage wear ever so often). Not just stopping with clothing, Joanne plans to explore more about designing shoes for her master’s degree, or take a short course to learn more about it. Joanne is currently enrolled in university, and has decided to pause her career in fashion design for a period of time to pursue her studies in Malaysia.

Produced by Walt Disney, this film tells the origin story of one of their iconic animated movie villains, Cruella de Vil (from the film ‘The 101 Dalmatians’). It not only highlights the origin of the villain, but also showcases fantastic and unique clothing designs.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) (PG-13)

Andrea Sachs, commonly known as Andy, is an aspiring journalist who recently graduated from Northwestern University. Andy gets a job as a junior personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, editor in chief of Runway magazine. Ironically, Andy is not fashionable at all, and has little knowledge about the fashion industry. So how does she survive in that world? Watch this entertaining and thought provoking film to find out!

The Great Gatsby (2013) (PG-13)

The Great Gatsby is a cinematic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel. It follows the life of millionaire Jay Gatsby and his neighbor Nick Carraway, who recounts his encounter with Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties. Fun fact: this movie had a great influence on the fashion industry.

NASA Artemis 1 Launch

On Monday, August 29th, 50 years after the end of the Apollo era, NASA's massive next generation rocket, Artemis, will launch its first test flight after spending the final full day of preparation at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA has selected September 2 and September 5 as backup launch dates in case the countdown clock is stopped for any reason.

Before an astronaut carrying mission is scheduled for 2024, the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will send an unmanned capsule, named Orion, on a test run around the moon for six weeks and back to assess the capabilities of both spacecrafts.

NASA reported that there were no indications of damage to the spacecraft or launch facilities, despite the fact that a storm on preceding Saturday resulted in lightning striking some of the launch site's lightning rods.

If the first two Artemis missions are successful, NASA hopes to send astronauts back to the moon as soon as 2025, but many analysts think that deadline will be pushed back a few years. The two person Apollo 17 landing crew in 1972 were the last humans to walk on the moon after 10 other astronauts on five earlier missions, beginning with Apollo 11 in 1969.

the death of queen elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II served as the monarch of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms for 70 years and 214 days. The queen passed away at the age of 96 on September 8 2022, 3:10pm, at Balmoral Castle, one year after her husband’s passing. She left behind 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

In 1952 Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne at the age of 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. She is the longest reigning monarch in British history. Her health began declining in early 2022, forcing her to miss multiple royal events. A royal reporter stated she had been having trouble walking and standing for long periods of time. While meeting members of the military at Windsor Castle in February, she said: 'As you can see, I can't move.'

Following his mother’s passing, King Charles III (formerly Charles, Prince of Wales) ascended to the throne. He released a statement about her death, and made his first public address on September 10th.

The state funeral of the Queen on September 19 was a public holiday in the UK and several Commonwealth countries, and was one of the most watched and attended public events the world has seen in modern times.

hurricane ian

On September 7th, Hurricane Ian hit Cuba as a Category 3 storm, knocking out the power grid of the entire island, and killing at least 2 people one of which died of electrocution trying to disconnect a turbine, and the other of a house collapsing. The hurricane caused heavy rainfall, and then ramped up to 125 mph as it continued its path towards Florida.

More than 2.5 million people in Florida were advised to evacuate. Hurricane Ian was now categorized as a Category 4 storm. It caused heavy rain, major floods, and had wind speeds of approximately 150 mph. Many neighborhoods in Florida were submerged underwater on 28th September, after the hurricane made landfall and large pieces of debris were seen floating down the streets of some towns.

Firefighters in Florida used jet skis to rescue people trapped in flood waters as the streets turned into rivers overnight. Yachts and boats were tossed around and piled on the shore in the aftermath of the hurricane, with at least 12 people confirmed dead. Local authorities advised people to avoid going out into the flooded roadways, a sentiment reiterated by the US President, Joe Biden.

Mr. Lim Tjin Ik, a first-generation fabric manufacturer, formed his own textile company along with his brother in 1999. Before that, his brother had split up from his business partner due to the economic downturn in 1997, then he and his brother decided to form a new company that was fully owned by their family. The previous company was one of those that experienced hard conditions during the economic downturn. And although they are running a textile business, they never received any formal education in textiles. His company today specializes in fabrics for knitting.

In 1998, the situation was chaotic. There were riots at that time, but they still managed to run the business very well, all because of African buyers and the exchange rate. African buyers bought finished goods and the exchange rate got higher (1$=17k). At the end of 1998, they finished liquidating the company successfully. In the knitting industry, they would mostly sell their products directly to the garment house, fashion house or confection house. Although the company could directly sell their products to all their targets, the trading house could sell the product to all its targets. As a result, their main buyers were the trading houses.

The whole process of production starts with the fiber. There are 3 main fibers in the world. The first one is cotton, the second is polyester and the third one is viscose/rayon. Cotton is made from cotton tree fiber, polyester is produced from the petrochemical industry and viscose are man made fibers made from pulp (paper porridge).

From fibers, yarn is made in the spinning mill. And it is then knitted to become raw fabric. After that, it will go into textile processing which consists of dyeing (coloring) the fabric, heating, and softening the fabric to stabilize it. Finally, it will go to the garment process to make clothes.

Mr Lim's company is now facing the same struggles as other textile businesses, such as illegal imports, smuggling and scamming. Several years ago, people would import used clothes, as usually in more developed countries people would use their clothes for a maximum of 2 years, unlike in Indonesia where lots of people will keep their clothes for a long time (at least 5 years).

As you probably know, China is the biggest garment manufacturer in the world, While the biggest factory in Indonesia produces 350 tons per day, in China 350 tons per day is considered small. But in Indonesia, we have a unique strong point since Indonesia is the biggest market for Moslem wear, which accounts for about 70% of garments sold in Indonesia.

Issues that need to be addressed after the pandemic include the fact that the supply chains are not as smooth as before because of the slower freight flow from country to country, and that many factories are closed. The prices of raw materials now are also very high compared to before the pandemic. For example, one bale of cotton yarn used to cost 8.5 million RP, but now the price is 15 million RP per bale. Prices of chemicals for dyeing have also increased by up to 150 per cent. Therefore, the supply and demand situation is not working well, since the supply is limited.

Textile companies in the past were also often considered polluting industries. All parts from upstream to downstream (from the cotton field to fabric manufacturing) were causing pollution, especially for the dyeing. For the last 25 years, there has been a movement toward sustainability to support the environment and the Earth’s greenery. In 2018, Indonesia launched environmental laws that industries would have to follow, so in the future, sustainability for the Indonesian textile industry will hopefully become better.

The Roaring 20s

The Great Gatsby Era was known for its flapper style and pearls, feathers and tassels. Casual suits and free flowing, non fitting dresses were a staple It was about glitz and glamor, but with simple silhouettes The real element to its extravagance wasn’t the shape but rather the details and luxurious materials. Coco Chanel had a huge influence by giving women a chance of individuality by breaking free from restrictive corsets and instead opted for looser flowing silhouettes.

The Swinging 60s

According to singer Madeline Bell, “Music played a huge role in the fashion of the 60s, especially in London. Carnaby Street was where young people from around the world came to shop and be part of ‘Swinging London’. Peace and love were wanted.” That’s why the peace symbol was greatly worn. The 60s also had very big sci fi and hippy elements to their looks along with floral patterns. Staple pieces include wide legged or bell bottoms, stiletto heels, platform shoes, flared jumpsuits and anything big like the buttons on blazers, hairdos, and eye makeup (just like how Priscilla Presley did it).

The Groovy 70s

The 70s were not far different from the 60s but had a more retro look to it. They opted for a warmer color palette like burnt orange and yellow. It was known as the disco era with big afros and jumpsuits.

These ladies were 3 of the most influential and iconic figures of the y2k era. It was all about low rise and BLING everything. One of the things that really stood out was the prominence of the Juicy Couture velour tracksuits that took over fashion looks with a storm

Many industries have seen significant advancements due to the introduction and application of technology. The fashion industry has not been immune. This technological advancement has enabled the fashion industry to expand. Fashion brands can now highlight their fashion trends to a larger audience, thanks to advances in technology. Technology benefits not only brands, but also consumers. Fashion items have become more accessible, and the process has become more convenient.

Back in the day, designers used to produce similar designs without much understanding. However, with the introduction of app design, it has become uncommon for designs to be comparable or exact.
