Hinoki Treasure Bowls H

inoki only grow in a few places around the world: the East and West coasts of North America, Japan, and Taiwan. Taiwan is the southernmost of these three locations, and is the only subtropical country that can grow Hinoki. Hinoki are preferably grown in cool and humid environments. The monthly average temperature should fall between 5 to 20 degrees celsius, with 8 to 14 degrees celsius being the most ideal. For optimum growing, areas with a yearly rainfall between 2,500 and 4,500 centimeters are the most appropriate, with an average humidity of 80% or above. Places that can satisfy all three of the conditions mentioned above will be suitable for the growth of Hinoki. Areas that have a climate that is “cool, humid, with lots of rainfall are the rain belts of the central mountainous areas in Taiwan.

There are six to seven different species of Hinoki in the world, and the maximum height for Hinoki grown in Taiwan can be 60 meters, with an average height of 30 to 40 meters. The diameter of the tree trunk can grow up to 6 meters, and it will take about 120 to 130 years for the trunk’s diameter to grow to 50 centimeters. It will take approximately 90 years to get 1 cubic foot of timber volume. Unlike other plants that have changed their shape and physiological characteristics during the process of evolution, Hinoki have preserved many of the original characteristics that date from ancient times. They are an example of nature’s legacy that should be well treasured. Hinoki grown in Taiwan are known as the “King of the Forest”. They have withstood changes in environment, and have survived severe tests of nature and climate during hundreds of years of growth. Therefore, they are regarded as rare plants in today’s world. Being the pace of growth for Hinoki is extremely slow, the Hinoki handicraft products that we find in the market today are probably made of Hinoki woods that are over 1,000 years old. Slow growth and unique, rot-resistant properties combine to create a tremendous value and scarcity in Hinoki woods. Every individual piece of Hinoki wood has different veins, density, color, scent, and oil content. This is due to differences in their growing environments and altitudes, which effect different parts of the tree. This is also one of the reasons why Taiwan’s Hinoki are so fascinating.

Taiwan’s Hinoki are “living fossils” that have endured changes of environment and survived severe tests of nature and climate. They are the most primitive “aborigines” of Taiwan, as well as one of the four most precious woods in the world. Hinoki in Taiwan are regarded as a national treasure, and their value is compared to diamonds. Hinoki have absorbed the essence of the Earth and the Moon, allowing them to be regarded as the guardian god of the land. When we consider Hinoki under the context of Feng Shui or energy flow in our home or business, it has the effect of inviting wealth, creating a life of ease, warding off evil, and enhancing magnetic energies. Hinoki treasure bowls are welcomed by residents, politicians, and business people alike. Hinoki contain phytoncides that possess strong bactericidal strength, which have a positive effect in medical treatments. As people continually explore ways of keeping good health, they find forest baths are the most natural aromatherapy. In this respect, phytoncides contained in Hinoki are like “vitamins in the air.” According to medical reports, phytoncides can eliminate clinical symptoms both spiritually and physiologically. Phytoncides can also kill bacteria and dust mites in the air, which helps enable us to have a joyful body and mind. Wood sculpture is an art that may be experienced through the senses of sight, touch and smell. Both Hinoki woods and camphor woods, for example, can prominently spread the natural scent of wood, allowing for greater appreciation that creates a joyful body and spirit. Moreover, every piece of wood sculpture is unique. Sculptors use their imagination in creating works by observing the natural veins of the woods, as well as envisioning the final outcome of their wood sculpture. A good Hinoki wood sculpture is the combination of the conditions of the wood itself and the creative skills and thoughts of the sculptor.

Hinoki are one of the most precious tree species in the world, and are very limited in quantity. Since Hinoki are slow-growing trees, the Hinoki handicraft products that we find in the market nowadays should be made of Hinoki woods that are at least 1,000 years old. The main species of Hinoki that are grown in Taiwan is Chamaecyparis formosensis. The woods of Chamaecyparis formosensis are light-colored and red, with fine and solid quality; as well as bring scented and highly rot-resistant. They are grown in the mountainous areas of Taiwan that lie between an altitude of 1,700 to 3,000 meters. They are special products of Taiwan, and are regarded as “The Trees of God”, and also known as “Asia’s King of Trees”. Hinoki woods are highend materials used in construction and furniture manufacturing. Moreover, they have great medicinal values. Hinoki consist of phytoncide, therefore can disperse favorable scents that will last for 100 years. In Taiwan, treasure bowls are used to enhance and boost fortunes. Hinoki are the “King of the Forest”, as well as one of the four most precious woods in the world. Their lengthy and slow-growing times enable them to absorb the essence of the Earth and the Moon, and the natural elemental energies discharged from the universe. Every Hinoki treasure bowl has its unique life veins, phytoncide, cedrol, and scent. It can continuously absorb water, and preserve and complements the elemental energies in a space, as well as balancing the magnetic fields of spaces. Therefore, if we place the treasure bowl at the wealth area of our home or office, it will help to create fortune and strengthen elemental energies in the magnetic fields of that space, so as to achieve an ideal Feng Shui.

COLOR & EMOTION

We have created the simple concept of a personal ID. The personal ID does not represent citizens of a country, but they are rather the number codes that derive precisely from the year, month, day, hour and minute of our births, and take into account the longitude and latitude of the birth place, as well as the true solar time. There are a total of nine numbers. The numbers 0 and 5 are repetitive. These two numbers are our main elemental attributes. Through these nine numbers, we can balance the five elemental energies that we need. The same IDs are also attached to all products. Therefore, you can buy the products to match with your elemental requirements.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE? DO OUR LIVES HAVE A MISSION OR PURPOSE? THESE ARE QUESTIONS THAT WE ALL SEEK ANSWERS TO.

The Zeus Sensor book is based on the ancient Chinese astrology system of Zi Wei Dou Shu. Its main component is the Life Chart, akin to a road map and/or weather forecast combined that helps you to discover virtually everything you need to know about yourself. The information is derived from over 100 points in the celestial sky known as stars and their locations during your exact moment of birth. As a result, the Zeus Sensor is a complex and detailed system of interpretation that allows us to view the blueprint of our lives by accurately describing our past, present, and future.

An Essay by Roy E. Colbert, Architect

T

he essence of architecture is the creative vision that results from combining art, science, technology and the construction process for the benefit of human beings. Louis Kahn observed it is the thoughtful making of space. Each design program is unique. Every site has its unique characteristics. “Architecture is a very special functional art; it confines space so we can dwell in it, creates the framework around our lives.1 We humans inhabit, interact, live and work in what can be described as positive interior spaces.

The negative spaces between buildings tend towards movement and circulation. As a corollary, it is the just as significant that these negative spaces between buildings are perceived as just as useful as the positive interior spaces, and possibly even more important.

ARCHI TALK

The successful project recognizes and embraces the observable patterns of our human activities. In doing so, our movements are organized by the architect with the objective of becoming memorable. Successful architecture clarifies these activities, elements and forces that act with and upon what is built. It is the journey that architecture must both accommodate and celebrate. The elements of earth, wood, fire, water, and metal that serve as considerations are as much transcendentally non-architectural as they are real forces. This is the genesis of authenticity.

Architecture today struggles with the contradictions of the impact of modern technology and the fragmentation and disintegration of what we perceive as historical allusion. Authenticity actually builds upon the work and lessons of history. When offering a view of the creative artist, Socrates offered a clear message that authenticity is the artist’s perception towards being faithful to his inner self, and not conforming to the external values of others or some economic viability. This sets architecture free to employ its own authenticity of expression that embraces the currently available scientific and technical advancements, the economic parameters, as well as cultural traditions. It can be concluded that not only is this the obligatory motive of architecture, it is liberating.

The function of the architect is to provide what life does not ‌ 2

Notwithstanding how many projects are developed and completed very little is actually new. This becomes observable regardless of how much emphasis is placed on innovation, invention, novelty, or extreme design concept. While authenticity in architecture of the past may be celebrated by critics and historians, it has to be acknowledged that it was created using the most current materials and methods at that time. Well, things have changed. Architects will continue to have greater and more sophisticated tools, materials and methods of construction. What has remained is the architect’s command to alter our perception of our environment. Our perception as we experience a building or place is a phenomenon of human behavior. We are influenced by our responses to tactile and sensory cues, by space, light, textures, and colors. All too often copying some recognizable historical style that is pasted to the surface of structural framing, or some contemporary high rise place-less building, leaves us with an uncomfortable emptiness. Authenticity in architecture further demands telling a story behind what is designed and created. To be authentic, the design must stand for something. Authenticity in architecture in fact will maximize the science and technology of today with the search to extend a design solution beyond mere imitation. Authenticity begins with the program presented to the architect. It follows with an examination of the location, the surrounding context of the neighborhood, the specific site with its constraints, and the politics of the zoning laws. Since architecture is mandesigned, man-built, man-used and man-appreciated, authenticity further derives from the emphasis to include the scale, composition, unity, proportion, rhythm, sequences, intended function (utility), character and honesty.3 Clients are presenting design programs that extend the boundaries by incorporating enhanced and sophisticated technologies. This extends to the use of materials in unexpected situations; thus reinforcing the dynamics of continuous change, and of progressive advancements. Authenticity in architecture by its nature anticipates and incorporates flexibility for future, yet to be defined, improvisations.

Metals in Authentic Architecture Centuries ago forged steel chains were embedded into the base around the circumference of hemispherical masonry domes to restrain the outward thrust forces. During the latter part of the 19th century lighter weight iron and steel beams, cables, columns and moment resisting connections made the need for massive supporting masonry obsolete. This lighter weight combined with a greater understanding of the loads acting on a building allowed for far greater spans. Each successive technology opened greater opportunities for architecture to tell an original and compelling story, while accommodating the intended purpose. The logic of what is called building science gives a project what the program needs, yet it is the magic of authenticity that breathes life into it, and makes it what it wants to be.

Metal, born of wood fueled fire and tempered with water, is expressed in architecture with elegant details. Structurally, steel components comprise a highly organized linear support system. Whether this system is either expressed as a visually exposed enhancement, or is hidden within the building envelope, steel simultaneously contains the design and fosters independently innovative and compelling narratives.

Valencia Opera House - architect Santiago Calatrava Today we see large scale exposed curved metal surfaces that are either pulled apart or drawn together to create unexpected opportunities that are integral to the magic of a successful design. The special character of metal may further act as sails in the wind or as shelters from the sun, wind and rain. Structural steel framing allows for the elimination of solid walls. As such, steel speaks of both strength and lightness. Steel encourages flexibility and change. Spaces within can be reconfigured as needs evolve. The methodology by which some areas are defined for permanence and others for transformation is organized in such a manner that order and meaning remain clear while transformative change can occur over time.

28

Home & Living Fall 2015

Another example is where metals are employed to filter light, reflect light, or possibly obscure light. For example, small scale, repetitive curved and warped metal ceiling shapes might manipulate direct natural light entering an interior gallery space. This light is then bounced and reflected so that it is transformed into indirect lighting. The resulting soft daylighting is gentle and comfortable. At close proximity metal handles, levers, handrails and guardrails are where we touch a building. Vertical metal screens and coiled steel “fabricsâ€? appear as semi-transparent spatial elements. These may also be horizontally suspended from above. Metal façade treatments offer a striking counterpoint to adjacent finish materials that imparts a dynamic vitality. Metal roofing is a uniformly protective cover of as many colors as desired. Steel stairways are elegant elements within the interior. Exterior steel stairways denote strength and security while adding a narrative of an intriguing psychological accessibility. Physically, the shapes associated with metal are smooth, sometimes round, or sometimes sharp edged. The intrinsic nature of metal allows for unencumbered expressions. Generally, details in metal are characterized by precision, crispness and uniformity; however, as in the case of older buildings, metal surfaces are often celebrated by the patina of age.

Metal components like the whole of architecture are made of pieces. It is of particular note that metal handles, levers, handrails and guardrails are where we touch a building. With that said, when designed well, fabricated to specific standards, and installed with attention to detail, metal in architecture is an example of authentic craftsmanship. Without question the techniques and processes are rooted in current culture. Metal, when used judiciously, is an honest ingredient within the clear expression, the character, of the overall design.

ARCHI TALK

Afterword by Scott E. Stankey Roy Colbert is both a friend and colleague of mine. Over the last 17 years, we have worked together and in many ways he has been a mentor to me while on my path through design and architecture and I can say he has offered much in his career to both the industry and community. As I continue my journey through the modern translation and evolution of Feng Shui, I am excited to see Roy embrace the ideas behind the study of the Five Element principles and Yin-Yang philosophies as I have. That being said I am honored to have him as a guest writer in Home & Living and hope to make a permanent place for him here in our periodical. This particular essay, “AUTHENTICITY IN ARCHITECTURE”, touched on something profound in how we, as human beings, understand the environment around us. This profound idea has impelled me to elaborate on the subject and draw a correlation in how different cultures process experience. The western way of thinking can be very different from the eastern way, and so it seems, from the casual observation. As I study the divergence and distinction of the eastern and western ways, I am coming to realize there may be more similarities, and only a separation in the way we translate the information our senses are confronted with. So, as Roy is western in his thoughts, his initial ideas will be presented from a western point of view. Those same ideas, however, I would argue are universal no matter your experience is eastern or western in its influence. As apparent in this essay “AUTHENTICITY IN ARCHITECTURE”, Roy’s training and intellectual maturity allows him to see beyond the visible surface and realize that the “essence” of good architecture and design shall not need explanation in its function, only a physical experience to understand its “authenticity”. This is a truth that brings both the western and eastern viewpoints together. This is Feng Shui. In architecture, authenticity is truthfulness to the origin of design, truthfulness to attributions, commitments, sincerity, and intentions. To expand on what Roy surmised, I would conclude the following: While a vernacular shelter of a thousand years ago is purely and unarguably authentic in its intent to provide basic refuge for his family, the architecture of today that employs current materials and methodology is proving no less authentic and pure in its vernacular. If done correctly, authenticity in architecture will direct the senses to experience the essence of the built environment. It is our responsibility as designers and architects to create spaces where its essence evokes a positive response that will help carry one's purpose in life in a positive direction.

LUCKY COLOR AND LIVING STYLE

We convert the elemental energies of the universe into numbers and colors, making it easier for us to manipulate them to bring about balance and harmony in our living and working environments. The art of Feng Shui can be interpreted as the science of identifying the activation of magnetic energy fields that interact at different times and in different locations. We believe that our environment is surrounded with different energy fields, which generate electricity in a continuum. They affect the development of our well-being. The strength of the signals transmitted by these different elemental energy fields will vary, just like the strength of the WIFI signal will also vary from place to place. This book enables us to determine the Body Source Code of a building, so that we can match its suitability with ours. It also uses the creation, complement, and trade-off relationship cycles of the Five Elements to interpret “Feng Shui.

ndividuals should make an effort to find some time in their busy schedules for mental and physical relaxation and rejuvenation. Patio areas around the exterior of a home offer an ideal environment for this purpose. One important aspect in planning for an outdoor area that has positive energy flow is the direction the home faces. There are some different factors that determine the facing direction, which is commonly misdiagnosed. It is the side of the house may include some of the following:

Once that is determined, the orientation distribution, or AC energy can be identified. AC energy is difficult to change without major construction. DC energy is represented by decor that can be added or subtracted easily to change the combined energy of a particular space. Feng shui is about using the moveable, above ground, DC energy to balance out the fixed, below ground, AC energy.

Definition: Yang Water represents the gateway to all roads, and the origin of all things. Water represents communication and socialization. When designing an outdoor patio area that is north facing, or in a northern area, water fountains and koi ponds would be excellent additions to enhance the water energy. This location is responsible for the money and career aspects of your life. You may want to consider adding a pool to draw out your patio’s communication energies.

Definition: Yin Metal represents flexibility. For example, gold can be melted into liquid. Metal is the only element that can be melted. Metal represents metallic items, and pointy, triangular or sharp objects. When designing an outdoor patio area that is ideal for number 4 personalities, it should be built facing the southeast or located in the southeast portion of a home. The number 4 is yin metal, whose opposite is wood; therefore the wood area of the southeast balances a yin metal personality. Wood energy DC items should be green, columnar, thin, and rectangular, such as bonsai trees, patio furniture, and movable plants. Metal energy DC items such as wind chimes, metallic furniture, and items that are pointy, triangular or sharp will balance out the wood and metal energies.

A number 7 personality trait is yang fire, whose opposite is water, hence, they utilize west facing metal energy melting it with fire energy to obtain the necessary water. Yang fire personalities are too hot for a northfacing patio. This combination creates combustion and equals poor energy flow. Photo by: Jesse Gardner

BOOMERANG BUYERS MYTH OR REALITY? Brought to you By Charles Bonsignore

Not to be confused with the “Boomerang Generation, also known as Millennials who moved back in with their parents after graduating college, boomerang buyers are those who were displaced by the recent housing crisis and are now returning to the housing marketplace. Many lost their homes to foreclosure or short sale in the aftermath of the 2007 housing crash, being forced to rent or cohabitate with relatives, friends and roommates. Unable to qualify for a home mortgage for at least four years after undergoing a distressed sale, according to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines, these buyers have sat idle and regrouped. Now that the four year waiting period to qualify for a home loan has passed for many, and the job market and economy have improved, it appears these buyers are getting off the sidelines and rejoining the home owner population.

According to the C.A.R. 2015 Survey of California Home Buyers, more than one in five home buyers experienced a distressed sale—12 percent went through a short sale and 10 percent lost their home to foreclosure. Most (79 percent) of those home buyers who went through a distressed sale experienced it after 2007, indicating these buyers are now returning to the housing market and purchasing homes again. Another indication that boomerang buyers are more reality than myth is reflected in the increased share of repeat buyers who were previously “underwater” on their homes. The percentage of repeat buyers who were underwater on their last home climbed to 23 percent in 2015 from four percent in 2014. While there are some signs indicating that boomerang buyers are not a myth, don’t pop the champagne just yet. The fact that buyers intend to keep their homes much longer could be a hindrance to future home sales. Home buyers in 2015 indicated they plan to keep their homes for an average of 20 years, more than double the 8.8 years they specified last year. This decline in home turnover could pose further problems for the already tight inventory in California.
