This is the second Event Point published in English. Our aim is to promote Portugal as a Meetings Industry destination to the international community. Here you will be invited to get to know the potential of this country, the venues, the PCOs, the DMCs and all the other necessary services, people and novelties that made it possible for Portugal to occupy the 9th position as the most popular European meetings destination on the ICCA ranking. In the pages of this magazine you will read reports, opinions and news which will give you a perhaps surprising image of the destination - well beyond the sun and sea cliché. We at Event Point believe in the qualities of Portugal as a destination – although we are aware that perfection does not exist. We challenge you to take this first journey with us, a journey of discovery within the country that, over 500 years ago, gave birth to and propelled the process of globalisation.

NEW BOARD The Iberian Chapter of ICCA (International Congress and Conventions Association), elected a new board, last May, for the period 2013-2015. This new board chaired by Alexandra Toregão, of the Lisbon Congress Centre joins Maria del Mar Carnero of Fibes-Sevilla as Co-Chair, Maria José Alves of the Estoril Convention Bureau and Sonia Serracarbassa of Catalunya Convention Bureau as board members, while the Secretariat lies in the hands of Carmen Aguirregomezcorta The new board has decided to increase the Chapter visibility by stepping up its presence and becoming more pro-active in the meetings industry. Among other goals it is considering expanding its links with other groups in the sector. The new Board has defined its strategy for the next two years most notably: . Improving the collaboration with official authorities, as well as with institutional entities relevant for ICCA. . Improving alliances with key players in the Meeting Industry and collaborating with national associations and universities. . Developing and exploring the new emerging markets and Spanish and Portuguese speaking markets are also in goal of the Iberian Chapter . Improving information and databases, adapted to the Iberian reality . Improving marketing and communication with other chapters and foreseeing the organization of new events. . Organizing events of Corporative Social Responsibility to improve team spirit among their members and benefit local communities and the image of the Iberian Chapter. Bound to these main goals all the Iberian Chapter actions are linked and promote the advantages of belonging to an association that, like ICCA, is a key to competing successfully in the international conference market, thanks to the

usefulness of its data base and its international relevance. With 900 members, in 86 countries, on five continents ICCA has been active since 1963 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

THE ANNUAL IBERIAN CHAPTER MEETING WILL BE IN GIRONA IN 2014 Girona has been elected to hold the next ICCA Iberian Chapter Annual Meeting, from 2 to 4 April 2014. The bid was presented by the Girona Congress Centre along with the city Convention Bureau at the previous annual meeting, held in the Azores last April. A city steeped in history, with an excellent geographical location and a reference convention center, makes it an ideal destination for MICE sector. Girona is one of the most distinctive cities in Catalonia. This is clear to see in the prestigious accolades garnered by the city, such as the one obtained from the American travel guide Frommer’s, which includes Girona in its TOPTEN tourist destinations to visit in 2012. It is only 37 minutes from Barcelona on the High Speed train and extremely well connected to the rest of Spain and Europe. Girona, the provincial capital, is situated between the sea and the mountains, offering a wonderfully contrasting landscape. The Costa Brava, just 30 minutes away from the city, is scattered with authentic fishing towns. With its great culinary dynamism, the province of Girona is one of the most important gastronomic areas in the world, boasting almost 20 Michelin stars. El Celler de Can Roca, the best restaurant of the world (nominated by the Restaurant’s magazine), is located in the city and has three Michelin Stars. Come to Girona for the ICCA annual meeting for a great networking time and share your experience in a fantastic opportunity with other Meeting Industry professionals. W W W . E V E N T P O I N T. DIOGO ASSIS EVENTS BY TLC . CEO

PORTUGAL - THE HIDDEN SPOT IN EUROPE FOR INVESTMENT I am extremely enthusiastic about the recent news that this government has appointed a focus group to study and present the case to reduce corporate taxes thus attracting more investment into our country.

OPINION

If the different parties can agree on this, and we can demonstrate we have the ability to move to action, with a focused implementation and communication plan, then we will start seeing a significant increase in foreign investment into Portugal. I have been advocating this fundamental change, as I believe Portugal is a perfect hub to host investment from international organizations and SMEs. We have more successful stories such as Volkswagen group with the Auto Europa plant in Palmela. Talking of automotive you even see more and more TV adverts shot in Portugal too, room for growth with our creative industries. It is always very rewarding to have conversations with entrepreneurs and executives from other countries that have started their business in Portugal or work here for an organization. They speak highly of Portugal and share the great experience of moving their lives here. They talk about the great weather, food, wine, shopping, nightlife, incredible beaches; surf, sailing, golf, history and heritage; art and culture; and last but not least, about us the Portuguese whose warmth is felt. Apart from the natural resources we have now a country with less bureaucracy, allowing a company to be set up in just one hour and start trading immediately. Where labour is concerned, it’s starting to become more flexible and competitive with others. We are also a country where finding talent is not a problem!

Compared to other European countries Portugal is recognised as a value for money destination for goods, services, labour and real estate. Our country is also strategically and geographically well located being the bridge between the Americas and Europe. This is not lost on investors and we can expect to see growth here as a result. It is the west coast of Europe with the beautiful Atlantic Ocean that defines the limits. Next stop the USA. In fact, if we look at it from the outside, why are we not a main hub for large, medium and small organizations, from different sectors, to invest and have their offices, their plants and their growing plans? With our history of great discoverers we can also inspire companies to find new routes and think out of the box to achieve better results. Communication to the world about our “unique selling points” needs to become more efficient and this is the point where, over the years, we have not yet found the right combination. We should first focus on communicating Portugal and not the regions or the products; that comes second. Also Portugal has still to be positioned as a first tier destination rather than a “low cost” destination.

7

Word of mouth is doing a good job, 89% of people that visit Portugal say they had a great experience and want to come back according to recent statistics published by the Tourism authorities. They become ambassadors of Portugal within their friends, family and colleagues. Let’s capitalise on it. We need to demonstrate we are a country with the right building blocks for investment, checking external reference points against our internal compass and build a proper communication plan around it. Portugal is also enjoying a growing position within the ICCA (International Congress and Conventions Association) rankings for top destinations to host some of the largest congresses and events in the world and a good example of that is the Rotary convention that brought around 27,000 people to Lisbon last June or the Diabetes Association congress with 18,000 last year. It is also time to position Portugal as a luxury travel destination.

Getting an attractive and efficient fiscal system into place is a good start but we are in a global race today and no longer an island, which means we cannot be complacent or be too slow to change.

INTERVIE W

You started your own company, what made you take a step back and work for other companies? Opening and closing my own company within the space of nine months was an incredible learning experience. It was very difficult at the time, but today I can clearly see that I opened up a events agency with a basic knowledge of events management only. I could organise events but I had no idea of how to attract clients or grow the business. This was the reason I chose to go back into education and take a masters’ degree in Conference and Events Management. I took the degree part-time for two year and while doing so I made sure that I gained knowledge of all other aspects of the industry. I also went on a mission to build a large network of professional contacts. My network is very valuable and it has played a massive role my career development

FROM MUSIC TO EVENT MANAGEMENT He is Portuguese, but has lived in the United Kingdom for many years. In this second edition of the Event Point International we went to meet Miguel Neves, from IMEX and to get to know him better. How does a musician become an event manager? Can you tell us what made you change your life and pursue a new career? I see many similarities between running events and playing a concert or producing an album. Once I got a glimpse of what the meetings industry was, I found that it gave me the same energy as being on stage or working

in the studio. The music industry in Portugal is also quite small with limited international appeal, so the international meetings industry presented a much bigger opportunity career wise. I still love music and I always will but I much prefer to have a career in the meetings industry, it’s a very exciting industry to be a part of.

You are now working at IMEX. How do you describe your work and does it fulfill your expectations? I feel really fortunate to be working for such a respected company as IMEX. Before joining I participated in three editions of IMEX in Frankfurt, so I experienced the trade show and I got a glimpse of the company behind it. Just like many others in the industry I was impressed and when I had the chance to take a job at IMEX I knew that this was something I would enjoy. My role at IMEX is very interesting as I deal with education at the trade show and also the IMEX-MPI-MCI Future Leaders Forums, the student focused events that take place all around the world, held in conjunction with key industry events. I also manage all of the IMEX Group’s social media presence, a new task for me but one that is always challenging me and keeps me my toes. I find all aspects of my role very interesting and if there were more hours in the day I would surely take one even more roles. In short, yes this role fulfils my expectations and at times goes far beyond my expectations.

INTERVIE W

You have a special interest in social media. In your opinion, how is social media shaping the meetings industry? In an industry that is all about people and personal experiences, social media is simply a new form of technology that is designed to do the equivalent of meetings and events in the digital realm. I am a strong believer in social media enhancing the live event experience and not replacing face to face experiences. Social media is keeping people in touch, no matter where they are in the world, in very friendly manner. Social media also gives the individual user, whether an event organiser or participant, a platform to share their story and experiences using text, photos or videos. It really is a marriage made in heaven and as technology becomes more invisible and easily accessible to all, I can see that social media will become more and more an integral part of the meetings industry. You work for a company specialised in exhibitions. How do you see the future of exhibitions? How can they be more efficient in a world dominated by technology? Just as I feel that social media will increasingly play a part in all events, this also applies to exhibitions. At the core of exhibitions is face to face interaction and the desire to do business in a human way, by creating and maintaining trust based relationships. I don’t believe that any online communication can replace this, but instead it can streamline the exhibition experience and make it more efficient and complete. I foresee exhibitions using more and more technology, especially mobile and social technology, to add more value to all participants. Exhibitors can maximise their spending and amplify their marketing messages and buyers or visitors can make their time at trade shows more efficient and share their experience with their network instantly. All stakeholders can definitely benefit from a better use of technology at trade shows.

9

As a Portuguese citizen working abroad what kind of characteristics do you have professionally that are very much Portuguese? I believe that all Portuguese people have qualities that can very helpful for a career in the meetings industry. I think Portuguese people have an international view of the world, a welcoming demeanor and are hospitable by nature. We are also very adaptable to our surrounding environment and we are willing to dedicate ourselves to a cause or a career without reservations. Our history of the discoveries shows this and this is something we are very proud of. Perhaps one of the best things about being Portuguese is the way that we don’t panic very easily when faced with a problem and can quickly focus on finding a solution. This quality is very important in managing events, when we are under pressure and have time restrictions all team members must be willing to do what it takes to get a job done. I think this comes naturally to Portuguese people and this is something that has been very useful to me throughout my career. How do you see the Portuguese meetings industry nowadays? I see the Portuguese meetings industry as a rapidly maturing industry with a variety of established companies and a growing, dedicated and ambitions work force. Most of the industry focuses on incoming business and there is a large crossover with the leisure tourism industry. In the near future and as the economy recovers, I expect that we will see a significant growth in the internal and outgoing markets. As the global industry also matures, I would like to see Portugal in the forefront of understanding the knowledge transfer that can be facilitated by the meetings industry. This will also lead to a strong understanding of the motivating factors for the creation of new meetings and events. The Portuguese industry already has and is constantly developing the

facilities, resources and know how to host events. The next step for the Portuguese industry is to go beyond hosting events and towards being a pro-active supporter of the core issues and topics behind each event.

FLASH QUESTIONS Favourite city in Portugal? There so many, but it has to be Lisbon as it always manages to surprise me. Best place in Portugal to go on holiday? Lagos and the surrounding area. Best place to have an event? Porto. A fantastic city in a small geographical area with great professionals and a superb service level. Event location = Alfândega do Porto. Favourite Portuguese food? Arroz de Marisco. (There are so many though…) Favourite wine? A hearty red wine from the Alentejo region. Esporão Reserva would do just fine. Football Club? Benfica (but I support all Portuguese clubs in any UEFA competition and the Portuguese national team above all). What do you miss the most from Portugal? My family

LISBOA CONGRESS CENTRE HOSTS THE ICCA SECTOR VENUES EUROPEAN CLIENT/SUPPLIER BUSINESS WORKSHOP From 5 to 6 September Lisboa Congress Centre welcomed 14 ICCA member representatives of European venues and their accompanying clients. The participants were attending the annual ICCA Sector Venues European Client/Supplier Business Workshop. The workshop enables ICCA member venue representatives to meet face-to-face with decision makers or influencers (such as Board members, Event Directors, Chief Executive Officers) of European association meetings to discuss the possibility of hosting one of their future meetings. Each participating ICCA venue member set up their table and then met with each client for a 15 minute discussion about the possibility of hosting one of their future conferences. The clients were fully prepared bringing addition information about their conference such as bidding guidelines, names and

addresses of their national counterparts. Following the workshop discussions participants were given the opportunity to continue their conversations over lunch which was held in the Lisboa Congress Centre overlooking the Tagus river. After lunch the participants were given a tour of the centre before the

venue representatives went into the debriefing session and the clients into the “Clients Forum”. The feedback from the members was very positive, according to ICCA, they enjoyed the informal atmosphere of the workshop and were very happy with the quality of the clients and how prepared they were. For Alexandra Torégão, Marketing Manager of the Lisbon Congress Centre, the workshop was “extremely positive”. “We were able to show facilities in a lighter manner, providing an overview of the environment, the capabilities, the framework within the city to the major deciders of European events”, she pointed out. It was also an opportunity for networking, for and exchange of experiences among all conference centres. The destination also benefited from the initiative. “The social programme helped to show the great quality offered by the city in terms of events”. The manager also underscored the contribution made by all the sponsors. They were: Abreu, Lisbon Convention Bureau, Top Atlântico, Pestana Palace, Leading and Silva Carvalho.

Alexandra Torégão, who is also the president of the Iberian Chapter of ICCA, was doubly pleased with the event, since it was also an opportunity for members of the Chapter, and several were present, to show directly all their capabilities. The next edition of the event will be held in Seville, at FIBES, also a member of the Iberian Chapter of the ICCA.

LISBON HOSTS THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION Thirty thousand people were in Lisbon for the Rotary International Convention, one of the largest and most important events held in Portugal. The opening and closing ceremonies were in the hands of the Portuguese events agency that has been awarded most distinctions: Desafio Global Ativism. To ensure some of the most important moments of the Rotary International Convention, Desafio Global (DG) assembled a team of 200 people. It included ten senior managers and a wide range of specialists, “we fetched from other companies, because we believed they were the best in each area”, from

the lighting to the structures, from the video to the contents, or the rigging. An event where every day there were “complex things to manage”, in the words of Joana Prata, Marina Lebernegg and Pedro Rodrigues, of DG. Freeman is the US agency that co-ordinates all the Rotarians’

international conventions, no matter where they take place, and therefore, in conjunction with Rotary International, it decided to assign this work to Desafio Global, following a selection from among agencies of several countries. “We had the clear advantage among all those competing, that of being the one that had, by far, organised more events at MEO Arena”, acknowledges Joana Prata, “though we did not hold back from designing a very bold and scenically stunning project,” she warrants. All told, the management team created by Desafio Global dedicated two months almost exclusively to this project. “We got ourselves ready to give the customer the best Rotary convention ever held, to sleep very little, to respond quickly and efficiently at all times and to be attentive to the habits and schedules of American culture ...”, lists Joana Prata. “We had a most trustworthy team, greatly focused, in which we all felt that we were representing our country”, Marina Lebernegg points out. THE HOISTING OF THE FL AGS

GRE ATEST LESSON

For most Rotarians, this will have been one of the most enthralling moments of the entire Convention, when some 200 flags of the countries represented were raised from the floor and hoisted into the sky of the MEO Arena and there suspended at a height of ten metres and an inclination of 30°, so they could be seen as they were unfurled. “The briefing said only that all flags would be placed one by one, and would remain in place throughout the convention”, recalls Marina Lebernegg. “What we did was unique, very emotional – several people cried – and consisted of recreating, to a certain extent, the flag-hoisting ceremony. Furthermore, it also solved a scenic problem for us, because when, one of the screens of the main stage was raised, it left a completely empty space that came to be filled by this frieze of flags”.

This event, says Pedro Rodrigues, “demonstrated our ability to apply to special events the know-how acquired in corporate events, such as the Aga Khan project, organised in the meantime”.

PORTUGUESE TOUCH There were several very Portuguese touches marking this Rotary International convention. Right at the outset the olive tree, a real one, prominently featured on the main stage, the symbol of peace. Notes of the ‘fado’, both at the opening and at the closing ceremonies, and several Portuguese speakers.

P UB

THE OPINION OF LUÍS MIGUEL DUARTE, PRESIDENT OF THE HOST COMMITTEE A Rotary International Convention is always a unique event, regardless of the city around the world where it is held, both for its size, compared with other similar events, and for the diversity of cultures present. The ability to amaze and to create an atmosphere of joy in sharing the friendship of the participating Rotarians is always a challenge. And Desafio Global was able to outperform expectations, producing an opening ceremony that will be remembered by all, at which the flags of the 204 countries where there are Rotary clubs were hoisted from the stage to the ceiling of the MEO Arena.

Desafio Global demonstrated that it was able to produce any event, no matter what, for the quality and dedication of its professionals, which happily includes those of the other companies that co-operated with us, such as Normex and MEO Arena, and the operational personnel of the AIP Congress Centre.

The unanimous appraisal of all participants who contacted us could not be more rewarding: one of the best conventions ever!

PORTUGUESE FIRMS HEADING TOWARDS INTERNATIONALISATION WITH THE SUPPORT OF EDP To encourage the internationalisation of Portuguese companies and to generate partnerships and new business opportunities for its suppliers, the EDP Group organised two roadshows, one in China and one in Brazil. In Beijing 45 Portuguese and 49 Chinese companies attended, as did 42 Portuguese and 40 Brazilian firms in São Paulo. The initiative is called “edpartners”, and aims to deepen the relationship between EDP, the leading company in the energy sector in Portugal, and its suppliers. We chatted with Paul Campos Costa, EDP Brand manager.

OUTGOING

Why choose Brazil and China? The choice of these two markets was due to their growth potential, as well as to the Group’s local relations in both countries. The aim is that our suppliers take advantage of EDP’s special relations in these markets to open up a window of opportunity for business and new partnerships. Who organised each of these roadshows? In Brazil the event was organized by EDP with the support of EDP Brazil and in China we had the support of China Three Gorges. The entire development and co-ordination of the events were conducted by the local teams, in close conjunction with EDP in Portugal. The team work was very interesting from a logistical standpoint, constituting a constant challenge, especially with regard to deadlines and time zones. It was also a veritable challenge as far as the working and logistics of each country were concerned (from agreements with hotels to transportation, delivery schedules, etc.). In China the cultural differences were successfully overcome, with due regard for the fundamental codes, habits and ways of being, quite different from those to which we are accustomed.

15

Did you make use of Portuguese or local companies to organise these events? The event was conceived and organised by the EDP teams but, in both countries, we worked with local suppliers, from hotels and catering to production and materials. Will there be other such meetings? Are new roadshows planned? These roadshows are part of the “edpartners” programme that seeks to enhance the partnership between the EDP Group and its suppliers. This programme began in 2012 with the award of prizes to suppliers that were most outstanding in various aspects, and there will be another one next year. However, over the next few months, there will be an assessment of the results of roadshows in conjunction with the participants to determine the possible organisation of similar initiatives in the future.

THE VERY PORTUGUESE VINHO VERDE

This wine is unique in the world not produced anywhere else. It is light, fresh, a low alcoholic level (less calories), fruity and thus ideal to accompany light meals: salads, fish, seafood, white meats, snacks, sushi, among others. It also works very well as an aperitif and can be drunk with any meal. Vinho Verde is produced in the Demarcated Region of Vinho Verde, and is located in northeast Portugal. The territory has been demarcated for over one hundred years and encompasses nine sub regions: Amarante, Ave,

Baião, Basto, Cávado, Lima, Monção and Melgaço, Paiva, and Sousa. In order to get to know everything about this wine and the region which produces it a Vinho Verde Route was created and which includes tours to

some of the historic cities of Portugal. This initiative was born out of a partnership between estates, restaurants, accommodation and touristic animation companies so as to create a veritable experience around the wine itself.

ADVERTORIAL

THE CASCAIS & LISBON COAST AMBASSADOR’S CLUB: BEYOND MEETINGS!

More than an Ambassador’s Programme set out from the very start 1 year ago with high expectations and huge ambition. From the start the idea was to go beyond a traditional programme but rather to bring together the concept of a programme, the benefits of industry knowledge in developing and strengthening associations themselves and knowledge sharing through peer-to-peer education… and also attract meetings and events to the destination. Ambitious of course but as time has proven, a great recipe and truly successful.

ADVERTORIAL

Linda Pereira, the Secretary General of the Club, says “this proved a veritable win-win situation. The Ambassadors were eager to join and support the destination in return for support, education and having a wealth of industry knowledge at their fingertips. Today we educate each other and support each other’s growth. As local meetings industry community contribute to the professionalization and development of our Association Ambassadors, so too do they support the industry and commit passionately to being involved and going beyond the call to attract, influence and source potential meetings for the region.” Today the Club boasts 127 Ambassadors in a Country where associativism is not a tradition and provides education, organises four annual events and provides a whole range of association management and support services through its meetings industry support network. “The Cascais & Lisbon Coast Ambassador’s Club has become a go to place for everything from technical questions, to legality issues, to taxation advice to recommendations etc” says Pereira proudly. Of course we greatly benefitted from hosting Damian Hutt’s Association Congress which was a great eye-opener for local and national associations as to what was going on in their world, but also united the industry behind the idea and strengthened resolve to go further than the usual ambassador programme. Today we are proud that other destinations are visiting us and attending our events to understand the concept behind the Club and the passion that our members have been demonstrating everywhere they go, as well as how we go about sharing risk in these trouble times and thus helping to make our Association executives’ lives much easier. We have recently established our first

19

Board of Directors which includes representation from a wide range of sectors and ages. This will become the orienting body as we move forward and inspire other s to join and become active within the industry and receive support in return. For the first time we are actually now witnessing potential ambassadors approaching the Club to offer their expertise and asking how they can be involved thus inverting the often lengthy, tedious and time-consuming efforts of trying to convince them to join or to get involved. “We are of course extremely privileged in this destination in that we have a very knowledgeable Mayor and his team who have stepped up and supported the founding the Club because they understand the benefits it brings to the destination beyond direct financial impact to knowledge, innovation and vitalization of a variety of sectors”, Pereira explains. “It is through this newly established informal partnership between the meetings industry suppliers, the association experts, the association executives and the policy makers that the destination has positioned itself as one of the best meetings destination in Europe. A place it rightly deserves”. Linda Pereira, originally from the UK is passionate about Cascais and Lisbon. “This is a never-ending love affair, and when you know that you truly have a great destination and one of the most professional meetings industry you really want to and must shout about it. I cannot envision living anywhere else and it is both an honour and a pleasure that I can, through voluntary service contribute to sharing this place and the opportunities and benefits of bringing a meeting here. Being the Secretary General of this Ambassador’s Club allows me to inspire my members and colleagues with the same passion that I have. I know that they feel the same way”.

The next event to be held by the Cascais & Lisbon Coast Ambassador’s Club is the Awards Gala in December and already the secretariat has been inundated with possible candidates. The Club attributes 5 awards, most innovative bid, meeting with the most important legacy, and ambassador of the year, meeting industry personality of the year (supplier side) and an award for the Club’s greatest supporter throughout the previous year. And as 2014 approaches, the now famous line fits like a glove… the The Cascais & Lisbon Coast Ambassador’s Club is fired up and ready to go!

PEDRAS SALGADAS SPA & NATURE PARK WITH FACILITIES FOR EVENTS Pedras Salgadas spa & nature park, located in the northern region of the country, was inaugurated last July. Lying within a national heritage area over a century old, the restoration of this park called for an investment of 20 million euros. Also restored was the old Casino building, which means that northern Portugal has acquired a new space for events, conferences and private parties for up to 300 people. In addition to the Main Hall, there are three breakout rooms with capacity for 20 people. The facility has no audio-visual equipment, so the event organiser will have to deal with the matter. The catering is provided by the

Vidago Palace Hotel under the baton of Chef Rui Paula. Inside the park there is also a tourist complex, built in harmony with nature, comprising 12 timber and slate eco-houses consisting of three modules. The buildings, located with a 20-hectare wooded area at an altitude of over 580 metres, include the spa which now houses the new Thermal Spa, refurbished by architect Siza Vieira. Operating throughout the year, it offers a multitude of services, equipment and functions, including spa beauty treatments, sauna, Turkish bath, Jacuzzi and Vichy shower, in the 14 rooms available. THE ROTA VICENTINA TO GET TO KNOW THE SOUTHWEST COAST OF PORTUGAL Joint action between private and public tourism-related entities led to the birth of the Rota Vicentina, a hiker’s trail along the southwest coast of Portugal. The route is the result of a careful selection of rural and coastal ways leading through a well preserved landscape with its natural and environmental

values, its culture and its traditions. Altogether there are 350 km for hiking along a fully-signposted route. There are two tracks, the Historical Way and the Fishermen’s Trail. The first involves 12 stages over a distance of 230 km, passing through the main towns and villages in the region. Fishermen’s

Trail runs along the cliffs, in permanent contact with the sea. It is the most physically demanding, including four stages and five supplementary circuits, over a total of 120 km. For pleasure or during a gap between business meetings, we leave this as our suggestion.

T YMR: SOCIAL NET WORK FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND PROMOTION OF EVENTS MADE IN PORTUGAL Preliminary point: tymr is a social network. It allows you to discover events anywhere in the world and at the same time offers solutions to the organisers, particularly in terms of ticketing and event promotion. By working in an organic way, like any social network, it lets you create a channel of communication between promoters and their target audience, giving them the opportunity to interact. On the other hand, it allows you to increase the visibility of an event without any great effort – both financial and timewise – by the organiser. “tymr has an intelligent recommendation system, promoting events for its users, in keeping with their history of events, social profile, tastes and interests,” says Nuno Seixas. The aim, roughly speaking, is to increase the effectiveness and profitability of events. “Above all, we want organisers see us as a business partner” one of the managers points out. The most basic solution allows you to promote an event for free and to get statistics, but the company charges one euro for every ticket sold. Premium solutions include

the online merchandising store and segmented polls. Livestream is another service for the organiser. “Distance is no longer an obstacle to participation in a workshop or a conference. With this solution, regardless of the location, anyone with an Internet connection can attend the event. This solution allows organisers to sell more tickets and reach a wider audience”. Foreign consumers, too, can buy tickets through tymr for events taking place both in Portugal and also all over the world.

“We have a catalogue of more than 30,000 events spread throughout the world. Anyone, regardless of the geographical area where you are, can buy tickets through tymr, available in five different international currencies. At this time we only have payment by PayPal, but we are working on the implementation of other solutions such as payment by ATM reference or mobile phone”, says Nuno Seixas.

The company’s plans in the coming years involve internationalisation in markets such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, Dubai and Angola, Mozambique and other Portuguese-speaking countries. The question that must be asked! What does tymr mean?, the reader will ask... Times You Make Real. www.tymr.com

“WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT ASSOCIATIONS” CPL Meetings & Events has a track record of 30 years in the Meetings Industry and has organised meetings and events in over 83 different destinations. An impressive calling card indeed! In addition to the services it provides, what the client finds and permeates this company is an absolute dedication and commitment to the sector. “We are also committed to education for the industry and the establishment of international standards worldwide. This gives us an unparalleled insight into how the markets work internationally. What we provide is know-how and expertise. In addition to all the required services we also have in-house expertise on market and business development, a dedicated sponsorship and fundraising department, education & professional development, expertise in public affairs, marketing & communications including a social media strategy and implementation which can help build brands and raise awareness of the association, a legal department as well as creative & IT services”, stresses Linda Pereira, from CPL Meetings & Events. “Our longstanding expertise enables us to offer a wide range of services from strategy, creativity and execution in association management (AMC), to Congress and Exhibition (PCO), live communication, meetings, events and incentives as well as performance development programmes”, she says.

Everything is tailor-made. “We are passionate about associations and truly commit to fulfilling their ambitions”, adds Linda Pereira. CPL Meetings & Events believes in global alliances and local supplier knowledge as the key to delivering results that truly benefit clients. These local partners are carefully selected to reflect the mission and values of the company. CPL Meetings & Events is justly proud of its “rate of repeat business which is very unusual for the market, with some clients having worked with us for over 19 years”, but Linda Pereira is also well aware that the business of the past is dead. “A PCO is expected to partner, share the risk, create the budget, raise the funding, etc. We have moved on from suppliers to business partners. CPL Meetings & Events has not found this to be a novelty as that is the way we have always viewed the profession. We were just ahead of our time.” When she looks at Portugal as a destination, Linda Pereira likes to remind everyone that the country “is more

than its beauty and its gastronomy and its great hotels. Portugal has some of the best universities in the world, some of the greatest scientists, the most innovative creative professions, some of the smartest companies... what is there not to like?” Linda Pereira was appointed as Coordinator of the Masters Degree in Cultural Tourism at the Instituto de Novas Profissões. A recognition of her commitment to promoting Portuguese Culture, Heritage and Knowledge Economy. This year she was voted Personality of the Year 2012 in Portugal and at the time of print, she will be travelling to the USA to receive the “Golden Mouse Award Global Marketing Leader”.
