This is the third Event Point published in English. Our aim is to promote Portugal as a Meetings Industry destination to the international community. Here you will be invited to get to know the potential of this country, the venues, the PCOs, the DMCs and all the other necessary services, people and novelties that made it possible for Portugal to occupy the 9th position as the most popular European meetings destination on the ICCA ranking. In the pages of this magazine you will read reports, opinions and news which will give you a perhaps surprising image of the destination - well beyond the sun and sea cliché. We at Event Point believe in the qualities of Portugal as a destination – although we are aware that perfection does not exist. We challenge you to take this journey with us, a journey of discovery within the country that, over 500 years ago, gave birth to and propelled the process of globalisation.

ICCA IBERIAN CHAPTER
ICCA IS FLYING HIGH! The ICCA Iberian Chapter Annual Meeting (2 to 4 April) in wonderful Girona was memorable. This year our meeting beat all recorded participation with 78 attendees, the highest number ever. This proves the importance of the Iberian Chapter, its activities, and encourage us to continue successfully in future actions and events.
The Iberian Chapter is in shape and very active. This is also proved by the fact that three ICCA European Client/Supplier Workshops are held in three Iberian cities: Lisboa in 2013 - Lisboa Congress Centre; Seville in 2014 - FIBES - Seville Conference & Exhibition Centre and San Sebastian in 2015 - Kursaal Congress Center. This event is always a good opportunity to network. All the participants chat and discuss with other colleagues, meet new ones, share ideas and experiences, new ways of collaboration, new communication and marketing opportunities, as well as new business opportunities… and much more! Another benefit is the educational programme that focused the theme: “Developing new markets” and allowed the discussion and new insights on: . some of the changes that impact the sector; . experience on the challenges of working in an emerging market, its risks and gains; . the WTO´s most recent statistics on the growth of tourism worldwide, and the opportunities that this creates for the meetings industry; . the importance of social media, trends and strategies;

. the value of certain formats of meetings and presentations; . the discussion with three companies/clients on how each one makes decisions about events they organize and / or supports, and how to evaluate the results. It is also important to highlight the third Iberian Client/Supplier Workshop, that brought 10 clients (decision makers of events) to Girona, as an excellent business facilitator model with a good return on investment. The result was very positive and for that reason, instead of organizing it every 2 years, we are doing it again in 2015. On the 2nd April was the world Autism Awareness Day and we associated our CSR activities to this cause. We choose the color blue for this event – the official color of Autism – and developed several activities, over 3 days, to raise awareness to the disease and revenues for the Foundation Mas Casedevall, dedicated to welcoming and working with autistics, with the selling of painted bags and t-shirts made by the participants. The Iberian Chapter, which has Reed as the main sponsor, now has 61 members and this year we welcomed 4 new associates - Baluarte - Auditorium and Congress Centre Pamplona, Costa del Sol Convention Bureau Malaga, TAP Portugal and World Trade Center Barcelona. We believe this number will keep on growing over the next year. Of the many activities envisaged for the next year, we highlight some that are rapidly approaching: the ICCA Iberian database, almost operational, that provides members with information on Associations, Congresses and Leads of both countries; and the Business Exchange, which will take place during IMEX Frankfurt, with two other ICCA Chapters: the North American and UK & Ireland, fostering more business opportunities.
In 2015, we invite you all to the Algarve - the host destination for the next ICCA Iberian Chapter Annual Meeting and General Assembly. The expectations are high! W W W . E V E N T P O I N T. C O M . P T

TWO PORTUGUESE STREETS AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD So says “Condé Nast Traveler” and it’s not hard to believe. The magazine, in its Spanish edition, chose the “31 streets to visit before I die,” a tour that includes Rua Augusta in Lisbon, and the Rua Cais da Ribeira in Porto. The list includes several mythical places such as Gran Via (Madrid), Rambla
(Barcelona) or Ocean Drive (Miami). Rua Augusta is a major commercial artery of downtown Lisbon. It starts at the famous triumphal arch, one of the most iconic images of the capital, providing access to Praça do Comércio and ending in Rua do Rossio. Exclusively pedestrian, this street is often filled
with artisans and artists, which provides an enthusiastic atmosphere. Cais da Ribeira is one of the most typical sites in Porto. Keeping its medieval features, and with the Douro river as a background, the street is full of shops, restaurants and bars, and it is therefore a meeting point for tourists visiting the city.
THE BEST RESTAURANT IN EUROPE IS PORTUGUESE Largo do Paço is the name of the best restaurant in Europe, as considered by the users of the online restaurant guide The European 50 Best.com in 2013. It is located in Amarante, north of Portugal, in the boutique hotel Casa da Calçada and minutes away from the city of Porto and the Douro valley. This award-winning restaurant with one Michelin star was voted in third place in 2012, and in the latest vote
outstripped competitors such as Noma (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Osteria Francescana (Modena, Italy). Vitor Matos, the renowned chef, aims to highlight Portuguese gastronomy, with a varied selection of organic products, recreating the flavours of the region with his sophisticated touch and changing the menus seasonally to incorporate the freshest ingredients the local market
has to offer, thus obtaining a refined balance between contemporary and traditional cuisine. This vote takes place throughout the year. The European 50 Best.com intends to become the ultimate online restaurant guide, as it is their belief that the opinions of thousands of eager consumers with real experiences are essentially more accurate than the opinions of critics.

PORTO VOTED BEST EUROPEAN DESTINATION… Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, was voted Best European Destination 2014, after three weeks of online voting. Porto had already won this prestigious title in 2012, and now, two years later, the European citizens place this charming location on top of 19 other cities once more as their favourite place to go in Europe. An alluring combination between old and new, simultaneously historic and contemporary,
Porto invites and welcomes both first visitors and travellers already in love with the city. The city spreads along its many charms, offering the tourists its coastal esplanades, its architectures and monuments, its leisure and green spaces, its nightlife or its World Heritage city centre.
As European Best Destinations describes it, “Porto, the “Cidade Invicta” (unvanquished city) is history, is architecture, culture, gastronomy, trade, encounters and discoveries.”

FOCUS ON
AIM AND LEADING BRING IAPCO’S ANNUAL MEETING TO PORTUGAL The meeting is scheduled from 12 to 15 February 2015, in Lisbon, gathering close to 150 members of the International Association of Professional Congress Organisers (IAPCO). This association, which gathers Core PCO and PCO was responsible for 6500 congresses all over the world in 2012, involving 2.56 million participants and a turnover of EUR 4 150 million. In a press conference in Lisbon, Susanna Tocca (AIM Portugal) and João Paulo Oliveira (Leading) highlighted the visibility that the country achieves with this initiative, noting that other entities and regions may be present, to promote themselves. The programme includes several sessions with national and international speakers, and a set of other parallel activities, aiming to showcase the essence of the destination. In addition to the co-hosts, this event has the support of both the Convention Bureaux of Lisbon and Estoril, and the Epic Sana Hotel Lisboa.
IAPCO has also chosen to hold the annual Council & Task Force Meetings meeting simultaneously, from 10 to 12 February, possibly in Porto, and Meetings MasterClass, from 15 to 18 February, this being the first time that the three events occur in the same country. There are only two Portuguese members in IAPCO, namely AIM and Leading.

DESTINATIONS DO MATTER…BY JOVE... HE’S GOT IT!
I attend a lot of congresses and trade shows. I speak at even more of them. Constantly we discuss destinations, how to choose them, why we choose them and of course the difference that destination choice makes on the outcomes and objectives of meetings and events. Then of course there is the fact that I both buy and sell destinations to clients so I get to analyse the arguments from both sides.
OPINION
Selecting the right destination for your event is critical, it is without a doubt your insurance policy, and should be decided on its business merits and founded on a business rationale. When the decision is being made by an association it becomes even more important. The right decision will protect the association, contribute to the reduction of costs, mitigate risk and fulfill all stakeholder expectations. And when the destination is not only appealing, accessible and affordable, your delegate numbers will be guaranteed to increase. And as Congress Organizers we are only too well aware that successful management of a conference ultimately depends on the positive feedback received from all stakeholders, whether they are organizing committees, delegates, exhibitors, sponsors, accompanying persons or speakers So of course when I became the Secretary General of my own destination’s Ambassador Club, it was time to really think about what my destination could truly offer the world of meetings and its many complexities and requirements. It was time to discover whether my destination could really walk the talk. Do we have a united, strong local supplier chain? Do our local politicians truly understand the value of the Meetings Industry and all its potential? Do we truly have a competitive game plan in place? Yes, the destination ticks all the boxes as regards infrastructure and breathtaking landscapes. Flanked by the Atlantic Ocean at its feet, and the mountains covered in lush greenery and topped by palaces and convents of ages-gone-by proudly lording it over the modern-day sprawling summer houses. But beauty in itself does not win the race and we are fortunate enough to have the amazing professionals who turn ideas into reality, productive business
9
solutions and ROI-delivering projects. However, no matter what the private sector does, we all know only too well that without the support of the local government leaders a lot falls by the wayside. But we also have a local government with a vision and this is our safety net. Cascais has a vision, to become the best place to live for a day or for a lifetime! Now what promise could be better than that? To be the most welcoming destination, no matter how long you stay, is not only ambitious but also a guarantee that Cascais will be the perfect stage for any event...and a home from home for all. All those who come to Cascais and the Estoril Coast, arrive as strangers but leave as friends. It has always been that way. It explains why so many of those noble families or refugees from tyranny during World War II who came here hoping to journey on by sea to other continents, opted in the end to remain here and today, their descendants are an integral part of Cascais. It explains why we have a Museum called “In Memory of Exile”. When you arrive in Cascais it feels familiar, welcoming, and comfortable. You just fit. You easily make friends, adapt to the rhythm, and intuitively know how to orient yourself. Cascais feels like a village but has the comfort of a city. It is cosmopolitan and modern but safe and people-friendly. It has five star hotels, a fabulous state-of-the-art congress centre but also shops that bake bread, dressmakers, cobblers and fishermen, the Michelin star restaurant and the local tavern. You immediately have a local café, a local bar, a local bakery, a local shop...in the space of 24 hours...you are a local yourself. Cascais is very human in a modern world. Cascais is the very essence of what a meeting or event itself should be. I often say that I do not organize events; I work with the knowledge economy.
After every event no matter what sector, or field or theme is being discussed, the world always gets a little better. If it is music, people are happier, if it is medical, then medicine advances, if it is science then the world develops just a little more... Cascais offers the stage for that possibility to occur by its mere nature. Cascais has the potential to become a knowledge hub, a meeting point of cultures, an axis of knowledge exchange a catalyst for local solutions to global problems.
The singular appeal of Cascais goes beyond its proximity to the capital city. It captivates with history, charm and elegance. It is also both soulful and affordable and there is no better place to enjoy old-world glamour — but at a commoner’s price. We have in the past been really bad marketers…we have failed to understand the value of what our destination truly has to offer and so we have not been able to transmit it clearly to others. We have failed to pass on the message that Cascais is the perfect networking destination. This week as I sat back and listened to the Deputy Mayor of Cascais, Miguel Pinto Luz, describe the strategy for the future as regards the destination, the business plan and the ambition of making it the place to be...I thought thank God somebody has finally understood the message and I felt the same excitement as Professor Higgins1, as he suddenly realized that all his work had not been in vain...he’s got it, by Jove he’s got it!
1. Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins is a character in Pygmalion, a play by George Bernard Shaw who makes a bet that he can train a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party by teaching her to assume a habits of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech.

THE ADDED VALUE OF DESTINATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES
In recent years it seems that Destination Management Companies (DMCs) are having a difficult time. The effect of the last recession has had its toll on DMC services. Intermediary services are often left out to spare some money by trying to operate directly using the Internet, etc.
OPINION
“It´s all on the Internet”, we hear our potential clients saying, no DMC will be needed, moreover many international hotel chains are globally present and offers a whole lot of additional services to their Meeting and Incentive clients. The hotels nowadays often suggest offsite catering and transfer services, as the competition is tough and margins are down – this gives the hotels a a good way to earn additional revenue...
So what is the ADDED VALUE in using a Destination Management Company (DMC) when times are difficult and spending budgets are slim?
A DMC has to be a consultant, knowing all the latest places and people, opening to its clients the whole range of options available in the destination that an outsider never would know of. IT STARTS WITH THE VENUE FINDING The perfect venue is crucial for the success of an event; be it a hotel, a historical Palace or a modern open space building. All of this can obviously be found on the Internet, but can you always trust what is up there and is it up to date? Would you not rather have a real person to advise and help you? Would you not feel much safer dealing with your own local expert?
11
A DMC would also know about rental conditions, heating /air-conditioning system, options for lighting and sound and what is best used in terms of catering, decoration or entertainment in the chosen location. Access to places, parking facilities, security, it all needs to be considered. To find out the best solution in the target location is usually a much quicker and easier process having a local DMC present, which in the end will save the client stress and time!
A DMC adds creativity to locally available ser vices or helps you to find the local solution for your most creative ideas, solutions that mostly are not on the Internet but unique and tailor-made, especially when you want to give a local colour to your teambuilding or personalise your sightseeing programme.
CAN A DMC THEN OFFER YOU THE BEST PRICES ON THE MARKET?? Through research one always finds out the reason of price differences and it often has to do with the service itself that is the same at first glance but after analysis is not. A DMC always has a better experience of which supplier to choose for which service and optimizing the value for money ratio for its clients. Having said this, when choosing your local DMC, do some research and be sure that you are working with a partner that really provides added value for you.
DMCs should have best local knowledge and therefore continuously train their staff in order to become local experts and know all the latest changes, updates and innovations in their area.
LOGISTICS OPTIMIZATION
DMCS SHOULD BE FINANCIALLY SOUND AND HAVE A TRACK RECORD OF REFERENCES
No doubt a DMC and its local staff are of great help by defining or changing transfer routes according to traffic situation and local events occurring. DMCs usually also have good contacts with local authorities and the Police, which turn out to be useful in many different and often crucial situations.
It’s easy to offer advice but to have a good reputation in the market takes time and dedication and exceptional service year after year. A good DMC will have a strong purchasing power, many times much better than an independent client and hence the DMC will get its client the best value for money. W W W . E V E N T P O I N T. C O M . P T

OPINION . T HE A DDE D VA L UE OF DE S T IN AT ION M A N A GE ME N T S E R V IC E S , B Y S U S A NN A T O C C A
The DMC team should act as a local extended arm to your team rather than a supplier and should have reputation in the area through references from important hotels or tourism authorities. The DMC team works very closely with its clients and therefore empathy and good personal relationships are crucial for the success of a jointly organised event. (Choose someone you like!)
THE CORRECT PRICING Nowadays DMCs are often confused with tourist boards and the other way round.
Destination Management services are not free!
A DMC NEEDS WELL TRAINED MULTILINGUAL STAFF TO PROVIDE EXCELLENT SERVICE. A Tourist board never has enough staff to be able to deliver the many hours of consulting and assistance needed to deliver a first class event, while a DMC will never be able to deliver extended services, site inspections or assistance during an event for free. It seems so obvious “there are no free lunches” but our DMC everyday life unfortunately shows a different side of the coin. Often we get a completely elaborated request that has already been negotiated by the client, who in the middle of the project suddenly wants us to take over, but without paying
Convention bureaux and Hotels should know their place and opt to build a team with the DMCs to get important events to a destination rather than to try to get them just on their own. anything for the service! A DMC has to charge for its services as any other service provider does, be it a lawyer or a dentist, according to the type of event hours used, extend of complicity etc. In most cases the simplest and cheapest way for the client is a mark up quotation where we pass on our supplier net rates to our clients including our mark up. With a changing market however also some creativity in this field is needed. Good DMCs nowadays have learned to quote in advance for the hours they will need before, during and after the event to fulfil all of the client’s needs. According to client’s wishes we quote our handling fee on services in percentage or as a lump sum and some of us quote per days and hours we invest on an account which seems more convenient but turns out to be the most expensive solution in many cases for the client. I believe the most important thing is to build a relationship of trust with our clients in order for them to realise how many hours we work and how we make their life easier through our local expertise, so that they feel comfortable to pay for the added value service a professional DMC expert delivers. On the other hand the stake holders of one destination need to work as a team to promote the destination and to take advantage of their different USPs and strength.
Finally DMCs should value their own work and charge the client the right amount from the beginning for their consultancy, services and proposals. This would eventually save a lot of time spent answering “clients” who are just “fishing” or just need to have a certain number of bids to compare a quote! Standards are getting better, best practice is being used and industry bodies are getting stronger and better organised. The future and survival of DMCs would need some radical changes. We need to also educate our clients that our service has a value – nobody flinches when you pay for a lawyer or a dentist, so why is the price always an issue when it comes to DMC expertise? Maybe the European industry bodies and the local industry bodies should set some standards and minimum fees for services? Also establish rules on how to be a certified DMC, to avoid some competitors trying their luck and offering bad service for little money. As the old saying goes “when you pay peanuts, you get monkeys”. If the industry bodies, together with the industry came up with a plan with a standard minimum mark up to really make the proposals about service while guaranteeing that the proposals would be won because of creativity, personal relationships, etc. not because some competitors just slashed the price to win the business while destroying the reputation of the market.

“WHAT DO I LOVE ABOUT PORTUGAL?”: ONE SENTENCE… 500 WORDS
“What do I love about Portugal?” is a question that I get asked over and over again, and to which I give a different answer over and over again.
OPINION
As a Travel and Food Blogger, who spends his time visiting foreign countries, tasting all kinds of different cuisine and listening to people saying what makes their own country the greatest, I need to be very creative when it is my turn to say what I love about Portugal. What I have written below is the answer I gave, when asked this very question at a recent Travel conference. So, I was asked to speak about Portugal and what I love more about it…Well… This is what I could come up with… I love to dream that I was once a great Portuguese Discoverer and that the whole world was under my command, to think that my sailing ship is still moored outside waiting for me, to know that Portugal is neither part of Spain nor a province of Spain, to wake up to 300 days of bright sunlight and think that I will have an espresso and a Nata pastry for breakfast, to get out of bed and put my comfy slippers on
15
(the ones that my grandmother handmade for me), to go to the window and say hello to the baker who has just delivered a bag of fresh bread to the neighbour, to hear some Fado by Amália on the radio and sing out loud “É uma casa Portuguesa com certeza”, to look at an Azulejo panel and think that Fernão Mendes Pinto was the first European to make contact with the Japan, to read a poem by Pessoa and think that “normal” is such an overrated word, to walk down the wooden stairs of an XVIII century building in Lisbon knowing that once upon a time the Earls and Dukes made the same journey every morning, to admire the unique patterns of the Portuguese Calçada boardwalks, to meet the old-timers for a quick Ginginha, to read the football newspaper and argue with the old-timers over a couple more Ginginhas, to wonder which fish I am going to eat for lunch, to discard that thought and reckon that I will have Bacalhau instead, to walk the streets of Alfama and realizing that this is where real Lisboners live, to think that it was the Portuguese who introduced chillies to India, thus enabling the Indians to invent curry, to look at the red corrugated roof tops of the inland Portuguese villages and think that they resemble the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, to know that half of the Europeans wear shoes made in Portugal, to say hello to the Mayor and tell him that he needs to fix the leaking fire hydrant in my street, to
know that the Portuguese are known for being able to resolve any complicated situation using the simplest and cheapest of methods possible, to hear the sounds of the bells and the screeching yellow trams, to kiss the sunshine of the southern planes every time I drink red wine of the Alentejo, to know that we are the only country in the world that catches bulls by their snouts and by their horns, to remind myself how cheap and cheerful Green Wine (Vinho Verde) really is, to explain to an Englishman that it was a Portuguese Queen by the name of Catherine of Braganza that introduced the noble art of tea drinking to the British, to know that Portugal has more seashore than inland borders with Spain, to go for dinner at a Tasca and have a seafood dinner with wine for under 10 Euros, to speak Insha’Allah as did the Moors or to use Latin just to make my case stronger, that onion, garlic and olive oil are present in almost every Portuguese dish, to cry when I hear the melancholic tunes of late night Fado and think that there is no translation for the word “Saudade”, to open a bottle of the finest Irish or Scottish whiskeys anywhere in the world and knowing that the cork on the top is Portuguese, to know that in the summer I can eat fish cooked on charcoal in the street every day, to go to bed knowing that I can do all this tomorrow all over again… And again…

NO FEAR!
Garrett McNamara is an American professional big wave surfer known for breaking the world record for largest wave ever surfed which he achieved at Nazaré, Portugal. We interviewed him. How did you become a professional surfer? By chance, I was getting ready to graduate high school and had no idea what I was going to do with my life. My sponsor entered me into the Triple Crown of Surfing and I ended up winning a little money, technically making me a pro surfer. Does your work fulfill your expectations? I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life! It is my passion and what I live for. Only very rarely does it feel like a job. What would you be if you weren’t a surfer? I have no idea! :) When I was younger I wanted to be an architectural engineer. Can you describe to us your first contact with Portugal and Nazaré in particularly? My first contact was when Dino [Casimiro] emailed me a picture of Nazaré and then Pedro [Pisco] invited me to come and see the waves. As soon as I got there I saw the biggest waves I have ever seen! How do you deal with fear on a daily basis?
Fear is created. It only exists if you are living in the past or worried about the future. If you are in the present moment fear does not exist.

How do you see Nazaré in terms of tourism, events, and travel incentives? In the summer they don’t need any help with tourism the place is packed. In the winter it has the biggest waves in the world. It is the only place where anyone can stand on the cliff and be so close to such a phenomenon. They can truly feel the power and energy. Aside from that it is a picturesque cliff with an old fort and lighthouse! As a foreign citizen working regularly in Portugal, what kind of characteristics do you appreciate in the Portuguese people?
The people in Portugal have so much love and hospitality. They take a little while to feel you out but once they know your intentions are pure they will give you the shirt off their back.

IPATIMUP, CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE 25 years at the forefront of scientific research.
REPORT
19
JOSÉ CARLOS MACHADO
2011 broke all records for scientific output: 186 articles in indexed international publications. Statistics for this year show that, due mostly to Ipatimup’s contribution, the University of Porto was the one with the largest number of mentions on both gastric and thyroid cancer worldwide. Ipatimup (Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology at the University of Porto) came to life following an event. A group of pathologists at Faculdade de Medicina and Hospital de São João brought to fruition the XII European Congress of Pathology (XII ECP) held in Porto. It was September 1989 and the congress was such an unprecedented success due to everyone’s involvement that it generated a profit of $300,000. This sum was then invested in creating Ipatimup. From then on, the institute has been responsible for 22 meetings covering different aspects of both Oncology and Oncobiology, as well as numerous other events. One year after its inception, Ipatimup launched its Master’s in Oncobiology. One has stood out from the very beginning – Manuel Sobrinho Simões, one of the most prominent scientists in Portugal, and still today the main personality in this centre of excellence. Porto Cancer Meeting, one of the main annual conferences organized by Ipatimup, was first held in 1992 at Hotel Solverde Espinho. These initiatives were organized from Faculdade de Medicina and Hospital de São João, as Ipatimup’s facilities were only first opened in 1996, seven years after the institute’s creation. During Porto 2001 – European Capital of Culture, the Centre played an important role in the event, organizing a lecture series, one of which given by Professor Sydney Brenner, who would later win the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2002.
Since 2009 Ipatimup has been experiencing budget cuts due to the financial crisis. Nevertheless, statistics prove the institute’s excellence: 138 PhDs, 245 internships for doctors and scientists; 1 750 articles; 32 938 citations, 120 institute group or individual awards, 18 patents and prototypes; 3 spin-off companies. In February 2013, Ipatimup joins ASPIC (the Portuguese Association for Cancer Research) in a partnership that combines all the Portuguese research in this field. PORTUGAL: APPEALING TO MEDIUM SIZED SCIENTIFIC EVENTS Context: problems exist, particularly related to air routes that make Portugal a more peripheral country. However, it holds numerous events, especially medium-sized meetings. “The weather is great, hotels are inexpensive and the cultural component is attractive”, comments José Carlos Machado, vice-president of IPATIMUP. He believes that Lisbon is the best prepared city, especially in terms of venues, but it still cannot compete with cities like Vienna or Barcelona. On the other hand, it is not difficult to attract scientists to the country. “They are curious about Portugal”, admits José Carlos Machado. Among the main reasons for choosing Portugal to host an event, he points out four: “the weather, the price, the cultural component and hospitality.” W W W . E V E N T P O I N T. C O M . P T

INDUSTRIAL TOURISM
Industrial Tourism is a growing tourism product to be taken into account. And also a good incentive or parallel programme to an event or a conference. Other regions already have industrial tourism projects, but the municipality of São João da Madeira, in the centre of Portugal, was the first to go deeper into this universe. Here are some examples.

SÃO JOÃO DA MADEIRA We have it around us somewhere, but it is something that many of us no longer use very often: the pencil. Perhaps due to this rare use, nowadays there is only one factory in Portugal producing pencils, and that is Viarco. This company, with more than a century, has managed to adapt to changing times. It kept some traditional features, but at the same time invested in marketing and in innovative products, like Dumm, the worst pencil in the world, because it does not write, or , in a different tone, pencils with codes for colour-blind people. Viarco is one of the companies included in the industrial tourism circuit in São João da Madeira. But there are other industries to visit in various businesses, such as Heliotextil - Etiquetas e Passamanarias SA, which produces labels, tapes and elastic for various sectors; Cortadoria, that deals with hides; Helsar and Everest, both linked to footwear production; and Fepsa, that works with felt for hats. In addition to factories, these routes include the Museu da Chapelaria (with its vast collection of hats) and future Núcleo do Design do Calçado (showcasing the shoe industry in the region), museums, technical and creative spaces dedicated to these two major industries that highlight S. João da Madeira. Soon, other industries will join:
Bulhosas (labels), Flexipol (synthetic foams for mattresses); Flexitex (fabrics for mattresses) and Molaflex (mattresses). The routes through the Industrial Heritage of S. João da Madeira began in January 2012 with the purpose of promoting the industry tourism dimension of the municipality, boosting economic and social development, and citizens´ quality of life. Since its opening, the included institutions have already received more than 44000 visitors.

WATCH HOW TO MAKE THE FAMOUS CORKS
LEARN HOW TO PAINT CROCKERY AND TILES
Did you know Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork? Novacortiça – Indústria Corticeira welcomes you into its factory for a journey of discovery of this important product in the Portuguese economy. During the visit, which lasts just over an hour, visitors are invited to take a closer look at the production of the corks that are then used in the world’s best sparkling wines. Besides the informative side, visitors can also watch the machines in action and see how the final product results. Novacortiça is based in São Brás de Alportel, Algarve.
Molde specializes in tableware and tiles. From Caldas da Rainha, in the centre of the country, its production is shared with the public, presenting the process of creating a piece of pottery. The visitors are accompanied by an expert guide. The company has created a pedestrian walkway placed on a higher level, so that the observation of all processes is done in a privileged manner. For those who wish to further immerse themselves in this regional culture, there is a painting workshop available. Imagine ending the day with a piece of pottery painted by you!
FISHERMEN ARE GUIDES ON NATURE WALKS IN ODEMIRA, BEJA In a project developed by the cooperative Taipa, a group of fishermen from Azenha do Mar was challenged to guide hikers through the Alentejo coast, in an attempt to make the former less dependent on fishing. Taipa is a cooperative association that works in the areas of solidarity and
development of Beja. They allow for the fishermen to share their knowledge of geography and history of the visited locations with the participants. Before starting the project, the fishermen had training - for example, in English and the hikes were prepared. Ivânia Guerreiro, from Taipa, explains
that this project, co-funded by the European Union, aims to “enhance the fisherman” and the fishing industry, and spreads from Azenha do Mar (bordering Algarve) and Aljezur, with its breathtaking viewpoint over Odeceixe beach.

NAVE DA ESTUFA FRIA HISTORIC EVENTS VENUE RENOVATED IN LISBON
At Estufa Fria, in Lisbon, you can find hundreds of different species of plants from the most diverse regions in the world, covering a large pleasant location with ponds, streams and statues. It is one of the most important green spaces in the city, visited every year by thousands of people. Nave da Estufa Fria is a part of this facility. It is a large building from the 50s and it was the scene of numerous events in the past, from festivals to concerts and receptions. Before 1974, the Lisbon City Council held free theatre plays for the people at this central city location. After that date, the theatre was shut down and the lounge area fitted. For several years, the Nave was disabled, but now it is the responsibility of Casa do MarquĂŞs, that operates in the catering and events business.
They have renewed the venue in order to host various events. Its 800 m2 are now ready to host parties, weddings, conferences, among others. www.casadomarques.pt/estufa-fria.html

SERRA DA ESTRELA CHEESE Serra da Estrela cheese, more commonly known as Serra cheese, is undoubtedly one of Portugal’s most renowned products. The father of all Portuguese sheep’s milk cheeses and one of the 7 Wonders of the Portuguese Gastronomy, Serra cheese is full of personality and charisma and has all the conditions to build a bright future for the gastronomic identity of Portugal.

own legislation, strict food safety standards and a specified region. Its manufacture is limited to Beira Alta and Beira Baixa regions. The manufacturing ritual remains intact, respecting the same tradition of hundreds of years ago. The shepherds leave early in the morning, to return only in the evening. Their wives and daughters make the cheese according to techniques learnt from their ancestors. The shepherd carefully chooses the pasture for his sheep, knowing that certain herbs give the milk a bad taste and this is the very essence of his task. Every day the shepherd milks the sheep at nightfall, after which his wife prepares the milk to make the cheese, which should always come from the same milking. The milk is curdled and then put into a cheese mould and manually pressed to extract all the serum for no less than 30 days, in drying rooms under controlled temperature and humidity. Depending on its maturation, the cheese becomes buttery or thicker. It acquires a unique, smooth and exquisite aroma and taste.
CHALLENGE
Its history tells us that the introduction of sheep’s milk cheese in the Iberian Peninsula is Roman heritage. D. Dinis, known as the Farmer King (reigning from 1279 to 1325), founded the first cheese market in the Middle Ages in Celorico da Beira. Produced in winter, particularly between November and March, it was once said that its success depended on the temperature of the hands of the women who produced it in the cold granite typical houses of the region. Today a DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) product, it has its
With such devotion and tradition, we handed the Serra cheese to CARM (Casa Agrícola Roboredo Madeira), which offered as a complement to such a prestigious cheese a no less prestigious wine, a Douro red wine, a CARM 2011, 100% Touriga Nacional with primary aromas of black cherries and berries, ideal to savour with cheese. But that was not all… we placed this precious product in the hands of chef Vitor Adão, from Casa Samaiões Hotel, a young promise of Portuguese cuisine who recently won the Gold Medal in the “Gastronomia com Vinho do Porto” competition and to whom we issued a challenge. We asked him to surprise us with a noble and unique use of Serra cheese. The result is a sublime dessert, full of tradition and exceptional Portuguese flavours (rice pudding, Abade de Priscos pudding, Serra cheese crisp and Serra cheese skewer )... Divine and certainly also worthy of historical record. W W W . E V E N T P O I N T. C O M . P T

AZORES
WHERE TIME HAS A SLOWER PACE There’s a place in Portugal where time surely goes by more slowly. Hours are over 60 minutes long and one minute is longer than usual. Sometimes, time even stops when we look at Pico, always vigilant and hypnotising, Lagoa do Fogo, dramatic and stunning, or the islet of Vila Franca, magical and modest. Can you imagine holding events or incentives in a paradise like Azores?

SÃO MIGUEL It might not be easy to get here. You will probably have to take two or more flights (depending on the island), but the best things in life require some effort. If National Geographic considered the Azores Islands as the second best in the World (and recently as one of the top ten destinations for summer holidays), it is because it is worth it . The archipelago consists of three groups of islands: the Western group (Flores and Corvo), the Central group (Faial, Graciosa, Pico, Sao Jorge and Terceira) and the Eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria ). The main islands equipped for events and incentives are São Miguel, Terceira and Faial, including small and medium sized events. The structures are modern and in harmony with the rich natural landscape. Imagine a workday complemented with diving, or whale watching, or a trip to one of the several golf courses on the archipelago. For dinner, the traditional stew “Cozido das Furnas”, prepared in the spectacular natural hot springs.
It is the largest island in Azores and the main destination for big events. It offers varied accommodation and congress centres, namely Teatro Micaelense - Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Ponta Delgada with 735 seats, or Coliseu Micaelense, which seats nearly 1,300 people.
The Pavilhão das Portas do Mar, the most recent of venues, has four thousand square meters and can accommodate 3,000 people. Other options are mostly in hotels. It has tourist animation companies, DMCs and travel agencies, as well as other services for events.

TERCEIRA Part of the central group, Terceira has two venues of greater capacity. In Angra do Heroismo and close to the World Heritage historical centre, there is the Centro Cultural e de Congressos. In Praia da Vitória, there is the recently renewed Auditório Ramo Grande, for events up to 400 people.
FAIAL In the city of Horta, the main venue is Teatro Faialense, with a movie theatre room with 300 seats and a small auditorium with a capacity for 73 people. The local hotels complete the offer in terms of space. But there is an unexpected suggestion for meetings on the island: the auditorium of the Centro de Interpretação do Vulcão dos Capelinhos. This centre first opened in 2008 and is built underground to preserve the landscape. In it, you can know more about the origin and evolution of the Capelinhos volcano, which went into underwater eruption on 27 September 1957 and was active for 13 months.
ACTIVITIES There are countless alternatives. Hiking (Pico Island offers one of the eight best trails in the world), whale watching, golf, diving, geotourism, cycling / mountain biking, canyoning, bird watching, surfing, fishing, kayaking, paragliding, horseback riding, etc. There are specialised operators for all these activities and a Convention Bureau to help you prepare an event or incentive.
