“Save the Turtles” Division 1 South
Volume 1, Issue 6
Editors: Briana Vu and Merlyn Chavar-
Save the Turtles has, by far, been one of my favorite service projects that our club has been doing for some time now. This was a service project that we started last year and originally was a one-time event, but we started it back up this past month. It has been ongoing ever since then. It is similar to what we do with our PB&J Service Project that has been ongoing since we were chartered as an official club last year. Save the Turtles was a service project that our club first undertook on last April. It was a project that we were unsure about, due to the clubber who first presented the task. It took several months to get more information about the project and permission from the City of Everman. When we eventually managed to save a few turtles last April, we were pretty excited. This project takes place at Chamber’s Creek behind a Dollar General, which is located in front of Everman Joe C. Bean High School. Our task is to clean the creek and surrounding area as much as possible. Unfortunately, the creek is filled with a lot of trash, which is not good for the environment. Creatures, like turtles, live in the water, and they could die as a result of the objects that are in the creek. That is why as a club we decided, with the city’s permission, to clean up the creek last year. We managed to fill up several bags with the filth that was in and around the creek. We’ve had many wonderful members come down and help clean the creek every Friday, and sometimes we even go out on Thursday. There has been so much trash that has been picked up this past month by our club members that we are hopeful of having a beautiful and clean creek very soon. We understand that we still have a long way to go before the creek is in good condition. You cannot repair in a few weeks what the community has done to this creek for as long as I can remember. We are the only community group that has tried to make a difference with Chamber’s Creek. This project has helped me see that our club has evolved into a true service organization in the past year and makes me proud of our club. We would not be where we are if it were not for our wonderful clubbers.

Beautiful Feet - Street Reach Street Reach is a program that work s with the homeless population in Fort Worth. A report released exclusively to The Dallas Morning News Chronic says homelessness in Tarrant County increased by 60 percent since last year. The 2014 Point in Time Count counted 2,451 homeless people, an increase in 3 percent from 2013. The Everman High School Key Club had the opportunity to work with Beautiful Feet Ministries to minister and feed the homeless on the streets of inner city Fort Worth. You get to meet so many different people and each of them has a different story. There was this “cowboy” who caught my attention and amazed me more than I could have ever imagined. The “cowboys” real name was Hugh, and he introduced himself as a true cowboy. Isn’t that crazy? I could not understand why he saw himself as a true cowboy until I began to listen to his story. If you had seen Hugh that night, he might have scared you with his deep stare. If you looked into his blue eyes, you could see the anger and pain he had experienced in life. Everyone in my group asked Hugh if they could pray for him and ask God to keep him warm throughout the night. He resisted and told us, “I don’t want anyone praying for me; God has never been there for me, and I don’t know why you guys even bothered coming here tonight.” His words impacted me because it made me realize that he felt as if he had no one in the world that cared about him. I kneeled down next to his wheelchair and said, “I know you might feel like you have no one, but my club came here tonight to make a difference in someone’s life, and You are that lucky person.” Hugh started crying as he heard my words because he had never been told something like that. There are no words to describe the beautiful feeling I felt that night knowing Hugh had softened his heart. He started listening to us as we told him about God’s love, and he accepted the food we gave him. Before we left him that evening, Hugh told me that true cowboys were not supposed to cry, but tonight was a night like no other. Meeting Hugh was an amazing experience, and I will never forget it!

A Word From our Seniors... Division 1 South

Hi guys! I want to share some of my experiences as a charter member of this club and all the unforgettable memories that have happened the last two years. I want to start by saying congratulations to our seniors and key clubbers for their hard work and effort. It has been an honor to be a member of Key Club and serve my community. The service project with Beautiful Feet Ministries has impacted my life tremendously, it has taught me many life lessons. I will forever cherish all of the great life lessons that I
have learned. In addition, I want to end by giving thanks to our advisor, Mr. CastaĂąeda, who has been by our side as we grow as a club. I will miss the incredible time spent with you guys. Key club will forever be in my heart. Olban Alvarenga Galeas ~ Webmaster
Hello guys,
In less than a month, DCON will be taking place, and the following Monday will mark the end of a wonderful club year and the beginning of a new one. It will be a bittersweet moment for me because I will be saying goodbye to the organization I grew to love. At the same time, I am looking forward to what the new club year will bring. I served my club as the vice president for the majority of the year, and then I took over as the president, when our president resigned this month. Key Club provided a great opportunity for me to be able to be a part of something that I feel passionate about. However, none of this could have been done without the teamwork of all our clubbers. This organization is student led, which means that we, the students, will lead the club in the right direction. We are not the best Board that there is, but we try our best, and we always have the interest of our members in mind. We have grown and matured together and have helped each other become the best leaders possible. Being a part of an organization that is like a second family to me. Karina Gutierrez, President
