Trick or Charity! This year several Clubbers decided to forgo their traditional trick or treating and instead went to Burleson to ask for donations to benefit United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). UNICEF is a leading humanitarian and development agency working globally for the rights of every child. Child rights begin with safe shelter, nutrition, protection from disaster and conflict and traverse the life cycle: prenatal care for healthy births, clean water and sanitation, health care and education. UNICEF provided Clubbers the “little orange boxes” that detail the cause. Our clubbers went door to door, simply asking for donations. Even the smallest of donations can soon add up and save a life. Our club collected over $200 in donations that will go towards

Dog-tober! October is Adopt-A-Shelter Dog Month and the Everman High School Key Club came together to make dog toys for the Everman Animal Shelter.
Here are a few staggering statistics published by the ASPCA. There are about 13,600 community animal shelters nationwide that are independent which means there is no national organization monitoring these shelters. Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats). Families adopt approximately 2.7 million shelter animals each year. Of the dogs entering shelters, approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who came in as strays are returned to their owners. About twice as many animals enter shelters as strays compared to the number that are relinquished by their owners. Even though dog toys may seem to be an insignificant gesture, animal shelter volunteers say that keeping the dogs happy and cared for is always their number one priority. They understand that the donated dog toys go a long way in helping the dogs cope while they wait to be adopted by their forever family. Rather than simply going out and buying dog toys, our club members repurposed their old t-shirts instead. After much tearing, cutting, and braiding, the end result was over 50 homemade dog toys. These doggy-do-gooders received service hours in return for their toy creations. All the clubbers involved said the had “poodles of fun! Everman students may not be real bulldogs, but they are always down to help their four-legged friends!

Principal Appreciation! A principal’s job is not always a cheerful one. He/she has to do a lot of tasks behind the desk that many times go unnoticed. They are responsible for running the school and maintaining the educational environment. We celebrate our very special servant leaders in October. We take time to realize that they are the back bones of our school, and by extension, the back bone of Key Club itself. To celebrate, the EHS Key Club Board surprised our administrators with a our show of appreciation and support.
Our lead principal, Dr. Melvin Bedford even got a mini surprise party! Kalkidan Alemu, Manuel Quintana, and I hid in the teacher’s lounge and waited for Dr. Bedford to arrive so we could surprise him with a cake. He was taken aback and enjoyed it immensely. He was very happy that Key Club took it upon themselves to celebrate Principal Appreciation Day. Our Board decided that we wanted to celebrate all of our school administrators. We divided up each of the grade level principals and planned a special thank you for each of them. Our hats go off to Mr. Herman Norris, Mr. John Kershner, Mrs. Tamika Dees, and Mrs. Kimberly Little for everything they do to support our learning and safety. Another day, another happy person at the hands of Key Club! ~Ysela Rodriguez~

Words of Wisdom from your Editor... Wow, I can barely believe that the 2nd six weeks of school has already passed. It feels like just yesterday it was September 1st and I was in my first ever Key Club meeting. Now, it’s nearly the end of the first semester! Already, even in the short time I have been a part of Key Club, I can feel the impact that it is having on my life. I find myself jumping at the chance to volunteer, and I often notice myself taking a leadership role any time the opportunity presents itself. I feel more confident in myself now, and I am positive Key Club has been a big part of that transition. I am somewhat of an antisocial person who usually keeps to herself, but because of Key Club, I have more friends now. Merlyn, Hannia, Kalkidan, and honestly everyone on the Board are now people I consider my friends. They make me laugh and smile on days that I just want to stay home and curl up in a ball on my bed. My hope is that Key Club has been having the same effect on others as it has had on me. Remember Clubbers, everyone in Key Club is always here for you whenever you need us. Just ask for help and you will get it. November is about to begin and what a better way to remind you all that we are family. Key Club is just one big happy family who will accept you for who you are. And on that note, I hope you have a good November! ~Ysela Rodriguez~
