It’s funny how something as simple as a teddy bear can brighten almost any child’s day. These stuffed pieces of sewn fabric may not seem like much, but to a child that might not have very much, teddy bears are the greatest things in the world. They become even more special when they are a gift from a special person.

Key Club knows this and on November 7, Everman High School’s Key Club, along with Division 1 South Key Clubs, spent an afternoon at Ridgmar Mall making bears for underprivileged children. The teddy bears will be given out on December 11 during an event sponsored by Beautiful Feet Ministries. Hundreds of children and families have Christmas gifts delivered to their doorsteps by Key Clubbers! Key Club members attending will have the opportunity to pick which child gets their bear. After the service project, members all went out to eat at Olive Garden. (Photos by Mr. Castaneda)

CANNED FOOD DRIVE
The number of people in the United States who cannot afford to sustain their families is staggering. In the Everman Community there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of people who are having financial problems, and many times they do not know where their next meal is coming from. They often rely on food banks to obtain food because they simply cannot afford to buy it themselves. In order to combat hunger in our community, The Everman High School Key Club wanted to help organize a food drive. The Everman Key Club decided to partner with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and together we organized a school wide canned food drive. We collected cans from students and teachers over a period of two weeks and the amount of donations received was outstanding! Three days before the drive ended we only had 300 cans donated. Two days later, we had collected over 1000 canned goods that would go a long way to assist the Everman Community right before Thanksgiving! The food was donated to our PB&J partners Everman United Methodist Church, which is across the street from the school. The cans will be distributed to community members who are in need.

A Word From … Karina Gutierrez Hello Beautiful People! There is something that I want to tell y'all from the bottom of my heart, “Thank You!” Thank you for all that you have done for this club. Everyone's contribution and hard work is very important. Without each of your contributions, we would not be a Key Club, so thank you! My term as your Vice-President is quickly coming to an end. I have enjoyed being your VP. It has allowed me to meet new people and improve my social and communication skills. I wish I could hold this position for much longer. However, come January, we will begin the process of nominating a new group of officers. It makes me a little teary eyed to think that this is my last year, both in high school and in Key Club, but I know that the club is in good hands. I know that you will continue to grow what we have started. I can't begin to explain how proud I am to be a part of this club. Our club has nearly doubled in size, and we have been very involved in our school and community. This couldn't have been done without the efforts of our Advisor, Mr. Castañeda, our Board Members, and last but certainly not least, our club members. We have some very amazing service projects planned for December, so please remember to check the calendar and volunteer.
Alfredo Tenorio Hello Key Clubbers, it's your Senior Representative again and I just wanted to say that you guys are doing an amazing job. We've done so much good the past few months that I can't begin to express enough gratitude for that. We have done so much good this year: Can Food Drive, Build-A-Bear, Dog Toys for the Everman Animal Shelter, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, and many other amazing projects have benefitted many communities around us, as well as our own. Key Club has helped me realize that not only can I make a difference in this society we live in, but that I have succeeded in helping make that difference. Better yet, Key Club has changed me by helping me see that we are all leaders. Sure you might not feel that you are a leader, but a leader is someone who has a heart for service and is willing to make a difference in our society.
