Everman High School October 2015 Volume 1, Issue 7

Adopt a Shelter Dog Month At this very moment, there are millions of unclaimed and therefore homeless animals on the streets in and animal shelters. These animals have often faced abuse, neglect, and have now been abandoned. While an animal shelter’s purpose is to provide these animals love and care, there are far too many to house in their already cramped quarters. They simply cannot keep all the animals that they rescue. Unfortunately, the animals that fail to get adopted are often put down. Not to mention, some of the smaller shelters can get low on supplies very easily.

The animal shelter in our community is understaffed and is greatly in need of donations. They get more and more animals everyday, and they simply do not have the means to take care of all of them. Since you have to be 18 years old to volunteer at the shelter, we decided to help them in another way. On Thursday, October 22, several members of Everman High School’s Key Club took part in a service project to benefit the Everman Animal Shelter and made dog toys out of old t-shirts. The clubbers stayed for nearly 2 hours and made 60 beautiful toys. These will be donated to Everman Animal Shelter.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF The United Nations Children’s Fund, or as it better known, UNICEF, is a program dedicated to assisting children and mothers in developing countries. One of the major causes UNICEF supports is ridding the world of Neonatal Tetanus. Neonatal Tetanus is a painful disease that affects newborn babies and typically kills them within days of being born. However, neonatal tetanus is highly preventable and UNICEF sponsors several different projects to help raise money and awareness to combat this issue. One of these such projects is Trick or Treat for UNICEF. On Thursday, October 22, twelve Everman High School Key Clubbers went out and participated in Trick or Treat for UNICEF after our club meeting. They initially went to Chick-Fil-A to socialize with one another before braving the impending weather. They went to a neighborhood in Burleson and went door to door asking for donations. Rain was pouring from the time we began, to the time we finally stopped. Everyone was getting soaked by the rain, and while they could have abandoned the project and gone home, they all chose to stay and continue gathering money for UNICEF. When they finally gave in to the elements, they had been able to gather $94 in donations. Everyone had a the time of their life!

A Word From … Johanna Rodriguez

Hey Clubbers! I feel like I am growing with Key Club. Since I joined, I have become more comfortable speaking and interacting with people than I have ever been. I have met so many interesting people and have become a more active member by attending divisional events that are set up by our Lt. Gov. Vanessa Castañeda. I honestly feel like we are all one club! How many can say that? Not many! I hope that I can help our club reach to the TOP! I am looking forward to everything we are planning to do in November and December, and I challenge you to get involved in as many events as possible. I’ve had so many unique experiences with Key Club and Division 1S, and I can’t wait to write the next chapter of this wonderful story.

Briana Vu

Hey Guys! Can I just say that so far this year has been AMAZING? We’re only 2 months into the school year, and we have already done so much as a club. We have had socials, service projects, and everything in between. I can’t wait for what we do next! I think we all want this year to be great. The majority of the officers and I are graduating in June, and since this is our last year, I think we personally need to make the 2015/2016 Key Club Year the best it can be! However, it takes the entire club to achieve that and we are off to a great start! I am sure we will do bigger and better things as the year progresses. 
