What’s a ‘T’ or two between friends anyway? So, probably the most laid back shoot in the history of EVER just happened at Space De Beauvoir Studios, London. Every Model Mag and legendary photographer ALAN STRUTT met rock band THE STRUTS. We talk music, behaviour, soft hands and wild animals. An average day at the office for us obvs. Part of the role of being a rock star is in the ‘to camera’ end of the business. And these guys rocked it. Slick, professional, fun and chilled. In fact, you guys could seriously give some models a run for their money. Rounded off with a swift one at the local and this is what we call, a pretty good job.

fans and see some familiar friendly faces too over the summer. How are you?

Luke: Not too bad actually! Been busy but great.

We are good thanks for asking Jed. So, tell us where did the band name come from?

Adam: I’m buzzing and wanting to play more and more and more and more and more. Geth: We love festival season, everyone’s always up for a good time. And we get to travel all over and meet cool people. Jed: We've been lucky enough to meet lots of new 16

Adam: Our manager Joe, right?

Adam: Overwhelming, exciting and just plain crazy! Keith Richards shook my hand and wished me a good show and I’ve not washed it since!

Geth: Yeah, when Luke was strutting around. Jed: At rehearsals I think it was. No brainer really. You've recently played alongside bands such as The Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath. How did that feel? Luke: It’s a huge honour for us. When I hear news like

Geth: Incredible. Such an honour to share the stage with bands that we’ve grown up listening to. They’ve inspired generations. Jed: Pretty overwhelming. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have these opportunities but Every Model Magazine

we're concentrating on our own career - if we can have anything close to the success these bands have achieved, we'll be pretty pleased. I spent the whole Stones gig grinning like a small child at Disneyland. Who inspires you as a band and individually?

ee I would

love to tour the USA on horseback.

What is the most bizarre request each of you have received from a fan? Luke: Can I keep these cats?

Luke: Our influences range from lots of groups. Pop and rock. It’s hard to say. Adam: I think bands like Supergrass and Queen inspire us as a band, but individually, players inspire me more than bands, such as Lindsey Buckingham, Hendrix, Keith Richards, Tim Pierce & Angus Young. Geth: We’re inspired by 60s and 70s music and fashion, as you can probably tell. We like to take all the influences in, and put our own twist on things. I get inspired by sitting back and putting my record player on, and listening to my favourite albums from start to finish. Jed: Music predominantly from the 60s / 70s plus more contemporary acts involved in the Britpop movement and indie pop acts of the last decade. Anybody with a creative mind that is unafraid to put their work on the line for public judgement is pretty inspirational, whether that's music, art or writing. 18

Guilty pleasure? Luke: I feel no guilt in something that gives me pleasure. Adam: None! Geth: Homes under the Hammer. Jed: What Geth!? Mine’s puns and s**t dad jokes.

Adam: Can I smell your hair? Geth: I’ve not had anything weird yet - it’s usually me doing the weird requests. Jed: A girl found my dad on twitter and asked for his permission to marry me haha. Most awkward 'on stage' moment?

Ultimate music venue you would like to play in? Luke: A venue filled with wild animals. Adam: Villa Park! UP THE VILLA! Geth: Playing the Millennium Stadium would mean a lot to me. I’ve also always dreamt of walking out on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

Luke: I was quite drunk on stage back in the good old days. I thought I could lift my leg up and over the mic stand. Needless to Jed: The Emirates, The stadium say I tried it and I was suddenly of the mighty Arsenal FC. looking at the ceiling. Jed: Trying to speak Welsh in Wales and being met Jed: Japan and Australia. with blank Welsh faces. Hopefully both in the same trip.

Favourite food. Luke: I enjoy all spicy foods. Adam: Anything Asian and veggie. Geth: Nandos. Jed: The list is endless. But bacon scores very highly. Favourite instrument.

Geth: Being able to tell everyone I’m a drummer in a rock and roll band.. That’s pretty cool. Jed: Being able to play good music, explore new countries and meet awesome people every week. What are your future plans?

Luke: My voice of course

never called her back. Adam: I guess this means the stupidest thing I’ve done and I’ve done a lot, but not that i can share Ha Ha. Geth: I have a tendency to get really drunk after shows (especially in France) and throw things about in hotel receptions, hallways and our rooms. I’m no Keith Moon yet, but I’m getting there.

Luke: Keep on trucking! Adam: Guitar. Geth: Kazoo. Jed: Guitar. You can't play bass around a camp fire. If you could be photographed with any model - who would it be?

Adam: As long as I can feed myself and put a roof above my head for playing music then i’m a happy man. Geth: To keep touring, and take our music around the world.

Jed: To tour our debut Luke: Naomi Campbell in a album as much as possible. Beauty and the Beast scenario. What’s the most Geth: Cara Delevigne - I dreamt ‘rock star’ thing that about this last night actually. you’ve ever done? Jed: Cara Delavigne seems like a laugh, but my knowledge is pretty limited (sorry!) What rocks in your world? Luke: Alan partridge! He’s immense. Adam: Writing and recording music.

Luke: I had sex once with my own hand once. And

Jed: Supporting the Stones one weekend and watching football with my nan the next. And finally... Tell us your name, what instrument you play and individually which member of the band are you? We want to know who is the cheeky one, sexy one ... (The choice is yours) I am Luke and I only sing unfortunately but I play a bit of everything. Not very well but enough to write. In terms of who’s the sexy one I will leave that up to you. Cheeky or sexy one? Neither of them. I’m Adam Slack, I play guitar and attempt to sing. Thanking you. After interviewing a number of beautiful ladies on a particularly hot day in Wales back in June, Editor Ruthie D when greeted with, “I’m a giraffe” found herself in the midst of what would not ordinarily be considered an average day at the office. Despite being

completely unaware that the girl in front of her had Asperger’s Syndrome, or was an amazingly talented musician, she was already captivated by what in all actuality is, a truly genuine and inspirational young lady. Read our exclusive interview with Lauren Lovejoy.

“Being an

ambassador is all about putting your heart into helping people and wanting to make a difference.” Our Editor met you at the final of Miss Universe GB. What did you think of her? When I first went in the room I couldn't look at her. She made me nervous! I had an urge to stick my tongue out at her. I’m not sure why. How did you feel about Ruthie asking you to be interviewed by EM Magazine (and did you stick your tongue out at her)? I was really surprised when she asked me as I wasn't expecting it all. It is an honour and at the magazine shoot I wanted to talk to her for hours. And yes I did stick my tongue out. But only because I now know she is not scary at all. Tell us about your experience at Miss Universe GB. My experience being a Miss Universe GB finalist has been a very interesting journey. Involved with the contest this year was the 22

Strong Bones Charity which raises funds for children with arthritis, brittle bone disease. For me raising money and awareness was actually the most important part of being in the Miss Universe GB final. Being an ambassador is all about putting your heart into helping people and wanting to make a difference. I believe creating awareness is just as important as raising money, if not more so. Some of these children won't see their next birthday so just by spending time with them means a great deal. I have recently been asked to be an ambassador for Strong Bones which I am very happy and honoured to be. I have since built a very close relationship with Junior Ambassador, Myles Sketchley who has a bone condition. He is happy to be working alongside me so that makes me happy too. The fashion side of Miss Universe involving the catwalk was interesting as I have never done that before. It has really boosted my confidence though. I do love fashion and have done since I was a child. I was very into make-up, dressing up and walking around the South of France wearing a Dior head scarf and big brown shades. In my head I was 18 when actually I was 12. I have always had an old soul in a younger body. We had an empowerment day which where we had to chop a piece of wood in half with our hands. I was the only one in the class who couldn't do it which didn't make me feel all that good. But I ended up breaking it with my foot which ultimately

taught me that there is more than one way to break through. I came home with the Miss Congeniality and Miss Not In Vain titles which is exactly what I wanted to achieve. I feel I was part of the competition for all the right reasons think of it all as an honour to be involved.

do you think having this condition helped or hindered your involvement in a beauty pageant?

I am very sensitive to certain sounds for example, when people eat if I am not in a public place I have to wear ear plugs or head phones. It sends me crazy How old are you now and I get very upset. I am also and when were you very sensitive to certain smells, first diagnosed with taste and light. I also have OCD Asperger’s Syndrome? (obsessive compulsive disorder) behaviour too, which is I am 25 years old now and I common in Asperger’s. I collect was diagnosed with Asparagus material, rip it apart and scatter (which is what I call it) it in different rooms in the syndrome at 14 years old but house. I feel I have to have this my mother didn't tell me until material with me everywhere I was 17. She said that due to I go so I can touch it. the fact I was so badly bullied I also say it how it is and and depressed throughout my sometimes I don't think school life she didn't want me before I speak. I struggled a to feel even more upset or feel lot when I used to work with I had a label. I now understand customers. Someone would where my mum was coming buy something and I might from but sometimes I do believe say things like “You're a goat if I had known I may have been and I can picture you in a field able to control some of my smoking grass.” To me this is problems. But then I think to how I see things sometimes. myself now that I am who I am I believe having Asperger’s and there's nothing wrong with actually helped me being being different. I have a wild involved as I wanted to show imagination and sometimes people that just because you struggle with every day life have a condition you're still the and understanding peoples same as anyone else and are emotions. I just have to work entitled to do what you want. that little bit harder than some I wanted to inspire others so but I know I can achieve my I went into it knowing that I dreams. Well I'm here right now would either be understood or being interviewed by Every not, but show that we all need Model Magazine owned by an to be ourselves regardless. “Singing is the only thing I feel in control of.

want to do the same. How to you find being photographed? I love being photographed especially when it is with some one I feel comfortable with. I love doing all different styles of photography so I can portray different looks. It's something to look back on in years to come when I am an old lady in a rocking chair eating cheese by the fire. You are also a very talented singer. We know that because we've heard you. Tell us about music in your life. Thank you! When I was very young I experienced terrible bullying. I decided to sing in a school play 'Moon River' not really knowing how it would go but I had a huge passionate feeling to just do it. Anyway I did and it was the best choice I’ve ever made because singing on that stage in front of the whole school was like a whole release of energy. It is the only thing I felt in control of. I still feel that nobody can get to me when I am singing. Ever since that day I decided to carry on pursuing my singing. I was singing classical music but then a few years ago I recorded my Photograph by Jeff Gottlieb, Los Angeles

first ever track called 'Broken' which was based on the bad times in my life. I am told I have a very deep soul voice so when I sing now I do Blues Jazz songs. I'm like a cat on stage, completely different to how I am in person.

“Some people

find that I see people as animals, odd.” You told Ruthie when you first met her that you are a Giraffe. She told you she is a Panther. Tell us a bit about that. I see people as animals and always have done. I am a Giraffe as I feel it in my soul. When I put lip gloss on my mouth moves in a giraffe way. I often get my legs in a tangle too. When I saw Ruthie I knew straight away she was a Panther. She hops everywhere around rooms, she pounces and also purrs a lot. She is very tall and slender and she sleeps in a tree. Although just recently she lost her tail so she has found it very difficult to balance her life and work. But she is doing very well now. She just needs to take it easy.

Some people find that I categorise people as animals odd but other Asperger’s sufferers use categories too, such as age, gender, race, religion and so on. It’s just a less usual way of seeing people but it is intuitive for me. We know you have an exciting few months ahead of you musically, what can you tell us about that? Yes a lot has just recently happened with my music. I have worked very hard for four years now and have found who I am as an artist. I auditioned for this years X Factor in front of Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Mel B and Louis Walsh. It was a very successful audition as I got 4 yeses from the panel. Performing at the SSE Arena in front of an audience of 10,000 people was amazing. I have also recently met some very famous established song writers so I will be working with different people and putting an album together. I am really excited about that. I think I know who I am as an artist and a jazz, blues, soul style is completely me. You will obviously need to watch the X Factor this year to find out more about my journey there.

Who inspires you?

“People with Asperger’s tend

“Forget to be either your label very highly and don't intelligent, give up as creative or life's too both.” short.”

Audrey Hepburn inspires me as she has helped and saved so many peoples lives and never put herself first. I love it when famous people like to make a difference. Ruthie inspires me too because she also has a passion for helping people who suffer with OCD and Asperger’s and she understands me and not many people do. What would you say to other people with Asperger’s Syndrome about your achievements? It doesn't matter what condition you have you have just as much chance as every one else to achieve what you want to. You just need the right love and support around you. I have achieved a lot just recently and the reason why is because I don't hide the fact I have Asperger’s. I am honest and get on with what I want to do. People respect me for that because it shows determination. There is always going to be someone out there worse off than you and even that person can do what they desire to do in life. So forget your label and don't give up as life's too short! How would you describe Asperger’s to people who don't know anything about it? I would describe it as we see the world in a different way. People with Asperger’s are either very highly intelligent or very

creative or both. Sometimes we need things explaining to us in a different way in order for us to understand and sometimes we struggle to understand peoples emotions and we are also very sensitive to sounds and certain smells. We just need to work that little bit extra though it and some people may not notice we have Asperger’s. I have managed to control a lot of the things I have struggled with in life and found ways to cope with situations. Coping is all anyone can do with any condition. But to cope and get to enjoy life, that is success.

*Taken from NHS.co.uk in August 2014

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects social interaction, communication, interests and behaviour. It includes Asperger syndrome and childhood autism. Some people also use the term autism spectrum condition or ‘neurodiverse’ (as opposed to people without autism being ‘neurotypical’). In the UK, it’s estimated that about one in every 100 people has ASD. There is no ‘cure’ for ASD, but a wide range of treatments – including education and behaviour support – can help people with the condition. Helpful links www.autism.org.uk www.nhs.co.uk

CWS So Bobby, tell us a bit about your background. BH I was born in Portsmouth but have lived in London for past eleven years, I went to Springfield School and Highbury College. My hobbies include being a huge fan of football, rugby , UFC, CWS What made you interested in stunt work? How and when and why did you get started? Was it for the fun and excitement? The money? Pure kicks? BH My background is gymnastics. I started gym when I was four and stopped competing for Great Britain when I was seventeen then at nineteen I started live stunt and high diving shows around the world before I got my big break in 2008 on Quantum of

Solace stunt doubling Daniel Craig. It was a dream come true and I have not looked back since. I feel very blessed. I love the adrenalin rush I get from my job and every day is different.

was here that I got to do my first two 100ft high falls which really was the icing on the cake.

CWS What amazing jobs have you been on recently?

BH Getting to work and meeting some incredible people. Once it’s on film it’s on film forever and it's really nice to know in years to come I can look back on my work and show my future kids and grandkids. And I am lucky enough to be earning a living doing what I love.

BH Every job is amazing. I have been lucky enough to work on so many such as; The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall Quantum of Solace, Thor 2 Avengers 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Inception and Harry Potter.

“I double for Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Craig and have also for David Beckham.” CWS What’s been your favourite job to date? BH Fave job to date has to be The Dark Knight Rises just everything about the job the director, the incredible cast, the locations the fact that I was stunt doubling Batman. The stunt team and stunt coordinator were amazing. It was just incredible and it

CWS What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

CWS What famous actors have you been the stunt double for in the past? BH Again very lucky... Daniel Craig, Ryan Reynolds Jake Gyllenhaal, Cristian Bale Chris Hemsworth, Channing Tatum and Chris Evans. I am in Chris Hemsworth’s contract so I now do all his movies with him, we have a great relationship in and outside of work. He is amazing to work with. I have also doubled for David Beckham, Steven Gerrard in Adidas commercials and Fernando Torres in Pepsi commercials. CWS What advice would you give to people trying to get into stunt work? What should they train or study for? BH My advice would be to only take this on as a career Every Model Magazine

path if your absolutely sure it’s what you want to do as it’s not for the faint hearted. It’s tough, very tough but rewarding as well. Work hard, get all your qualifications and it does help if you have a solid background in something physical. CWS What training do you put yourself through to stay fit and healthy and how do you prepare for a new role?

work. Do you fancy acting at all? BH I don't want to push my luck, (haha). I am in such a very lucky and great position already. And working so much and being focused on this doesn't really give me time to think but maybe one day second unit action directing I hope. We shall see.

“The training

and prep is a job in itself before

the stunts even come into it.”

BH That really depends on the actor I’m doing stunts for. Hemsworth is the hardest as it’s training twice a day eating six meals a day as he is huge! When we do the Thor stuff it’s very hard work. The training and prep is a job in itself before the stunts even come into it! I generally try and stay in real good shape so I can either put bulk on fairly quick or lose it as required.

CWS Would you change anything in your life or the way you have led it? BH I don't think I’d change a thing. If I did maybe I wouldn't be where I am today.

CWS Has this job changed your life? BH It has totally changed my life. It's allowed me to see so much of the world, to have a great life with nice things and be in a position to be very proud of what I've achieved. CWS What are your long term plans for the future with stunt Every Model Magazine

We take a look at some of the best products on the market. Keep clean, healthy and brighten up your look with our chosen 3 of the best... This flight-size air-spray is perfect for travellers, killing 99.9% of bacteria, turning your ‘unbearoplane’ into an aeroplane. It complies with cabin luggage guidelines and could see an end to the bugs that passengers pick up en route to their holidays. One of the most common travelling difficulties is keeping surfaces hygienic and free from bacteria. According to recent research by Auburn University in Alabama, some of the most harmful and resilient bacteria on airplanes are germs that live on chair upholstery, tray table and on the metal buttons that move your seat or flush the toilet. Spraying hands with Aquaint and using it to wipe trays and clean buttons will eliminate bacteria,. Models on the move are constantly changing cities and countries and it becomes more difficult to keep clean, while being in different environments. With Aquaint, you are able to sanitise hands and skin effectively . We think no model or MUA 36

Bola Lafe, founder of Aquaint said, “Aquaint is a harmless, natural and highly effective spray a sort of shower in a bottle - that is essential for travellers. Aeroplanes are notoriously problematic places for hygiene and we all worry about cleanliness while travelling – be it on a plane, train or any form of public transport.” You can easily spray your skin, hands and surroundings without annoying fellow passengers as it’s virtually odourless and does not leave any residues. Aquaint comes in two sizes - a pocket-sized air-ready 50ml spray (RRP £2.49) and a suitcase or backpack-ready long-lasting 500ml spray bottle that can be used for the whole trip (RRP £4.99).It is available from all major Boots stores, and online from stockists including Ocado. com, Amazon.co.uk, and direct from Aquaint-uk.com.

This incredible serum is priced at £79 and available exclusively from www.mitoq.com You might flinch at the price a little but trust us when we say a little goes a long way. tunning curvy model Imme talks exclusively to Every Model Magazine about her career, size, fashion and future. Represented by Hughes Models this bright young lady is an inspiration.

Redhead

talks to EM Mag How old are you now and when did modelling become a profession you were aware of? I'm 24 and I believe I got to know about modelling when I was about 16. I don't think it was such a big thing then as it is now. Where are you from and I understand you are planning a move to the UK? Are you looking forward to that? I'm from the Netherlands, and yes, I will be moving to the UK this September. I will be doing an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, looking forward to it very much! I've always loved the UK so can't wait to actually live there. Maybe I might not even move back afterwards.. We'll see about that. How did you first get into modelling and would it be your first career choice? I got into it through an online girls' forum. There was a 'modelling topic' where girls posted pictures and talked about the subject. A photographer sent me a private message and asked me whether I would like to do a photoshoot with her and I said

yes. I was seventeen then but in the pictures I look about fourteen. I wasn't sure about what I was doing at all and it really showed. Afterwards I was scouted by a few agencies through social media. So I picked one and everything started. It would never be my first career move, I've always wanted to write so it was more of a very interesting and exciting opportunity. I'm very creative so I was glad I could enjoy another way to express myself. Moreover, I wasn't exactly a fashion size when I began and so I had to lose a lot of weight and I wouldn't wish that upon any 17-year-old. What is your view on plus size models on the catwalk? They belong on the catwalk as much as any model does. What does 'plus size' mean to you? It both has negative and positive connotations to me. I love the fact that women of bigger body types are finally acknowledged in fashion. On the other hand, I don't consider myself necessarily a 'plus size' model and often feel a bit guilty I'm labelled that way in the modelling industry, because I don't look like a 'plus size' human being. I know it's a term used for models who are bigger than Every Model Magazine

straight size (another odd term) models, but if we would just lose all these terms and go by clothing size to hire models, I think the industry would be a better place. I love webshops or magazines just showing different kinds of models in different kinds of shapes, modelling clothes that can be bought in different sizes. If you're a good model, you're a good model. How do you feel about the negativity around underweight people and the suggestion that being a model may encourage that? This is always a very difficult question because I know so many people affected by weight issues in their day-to-day life, but then again, they are all models themselves. So yes, I think it's definitely a big problem in the modelling industry. Girls going to extremes to look thin in places I hadn't even heard of, just because they are to look a certain way to earn big money. Sure, there are lots of girls who are naturally slender and are perfect models for that, but there's a big percentage of girls who have to work (too) hard to maintain their size 2 bodies and I don't think that's a good thing. I haven't really felt like the modelling industry affects anyone else than people who are actually working in it though. I feel like we are pressured by the media and western culture to look a certain way, yes. There are big companies wanting us to feel bad so they can sell us more clothes, jewellery, anti-ageing cream, make-up, diet pills, etc. I really wish for women 40

to ignore advertisements and commercials more and to start feeling better about themselves, because we're all getting brainwashed. The negativity around underweight people also comes from the up coming plus size industry and the marketing that's done around it. People see curvier bodies in magazines and think it's okay to be vicious towards people who have a skinnier body type. I wish everyone would just accept that every body is different,

and that, as long as we're healthy, we're all okay. No more skinny against curvy wars! If you could achieve one ambition in your life what would it be and why? I would like to write and publish a novel. That has been my dream since childhood. I am a very chaotic and impatient person so it will probably the most difficult thing I ever do, but hopefully it

What advice can you offer other people considering a modelling career?

This might sound weird but I almost never wear makeup and I think that does great things for my skin. I only wear a little mascara and lipstick when I go out or just feel like dolling up, but never use it daily. Also, I use a lot of sunscreen (even

Go into it with a slightly sceptical mind. Do your best, enjoy what you do, play around, but don't let harsh comments crush you because it's all about appearances and not about who you really are as a person. Let's talk about red hair. Our Editor loves to see a redhead in all genres of modelling. She thinks it's underrated and not seen enough. Would you agree with her? Yes! I totally agree! When I was still a fashion (or straight size) model, red hair was a positive thing, like an extra lovely trait photographers would book you for. I feel that in the plus size industry people are more careful and think the models have to look more 'normal', so red hair isn't something I see often. Which is a shame. What do you think is your strongest attribute? I want to say my butt, haha! I am on a mission to make

for morning workouts too. I usually have oatmeal for breakfast, with soy milk, raisins, cinnamon and blueberries or any other fruits. Then in the afternoon I'll eat sandwiches or salad or soup, and in the evening me and my boyfriend like experimenting with different vegetarian recipes. I think it's important to not be too hard on yourself if it comes to working out and eating healthily, as long as you feel energetic and happy. What frivolous possession would you find difficult to live without? I'm a big spender on clothes. I just love putting together new and creative outfits. I want to be that person who buys one great item per year but in fact I buy like three things a month. And then often after two years I don't even like most of it anymore, it's kind of horrible. Oh and also, it's not an item, but sushi. It's way too expensive but it's too yummy to refuse. Favourite lipstick colour? Coral. And dark purple.

Well I live in the Netherlands and people here mostly use their bicycle to travel places, so I bike around a lot. If I'm not on my bicycle, I walk. When I feel like it I do exercises like squats, lunges and crunches and I've recently come to realise that our stairs are good

“Winning the title of Miss ‘Nobody’ dilutes the valuable and real opportunities out there.”

Every Model Magazine

“The theory that the modelling industry is full of scammers can indeed overshadow those who are genuine and run a reputable business.”

I

’m constantly stumbling across modeling competitions - win the title of Miss ‘Nobody” (in fact I’ve actually given up counting the number of irrelevant beauty pageants being created) or win a modelling contract with a totally unknown agency that once had a model published in ZOO magazine 1999. It’s these unfortunate money-makers which have led to a complete dilution of not only the real contests out there, with valuable prizes and genuine stepping stones for a career, but moreover a cynicism for parents and potential competitors whom now foresee everything within the modelling industry as a scam. Think about it, if Tyra Banks were to scout you for her next cycle of America’s Next Top Model would you refuse on the basis it is a modeling competition or would you look at it the same as thousands, if not millions, of other young women have before as an incredible opportunity? The reality is, the actual crux of the competition promises the same as what we snub at

“If Tyra Banks this happen many times not just in modelling but were to scout across the showbiz industry. ‘One Direction’ has to be a you for her next fantastic example. I have met many ladies that want to be cycle of America’s models whom say, they can take the knocks this industry Next Top Model unleashes but the reality is, only a very small proportion would you refuse can. It’s that proportion that I guarantee will do well on the basis it because they listen, they have the right attitude and is a modelling they want to learn how to improve. Those who take competition?” things to heart or worse,

when reading the flyers of these other non-descript modelling contests. However, what it doesn’t offer and what is the key, is the incredible success of Tyra Banks and her vast knowledge of the modelling industry. It is this point, which lends itself to my argument for why I believe modelling competitions are a great stepping-stone for amateur models to launch a career. Modelling competitions organised by reputable professionals and with advantageous prizes such as a contract with a renowned modelling agency are definitely worthwhile opportunities to consider. I know myself from organising competitions how many new faces it introduces me to. They may not win the contest but we work together on other projects and I give them an introductory platform to the modelling industry. So, what should you consider before entering a modeling contest? In no particular order - who are the organisers? How valuable are the prizes? Great, you may receive a double page spread in a magazine but is it the style of modelling you want to do? After all, it’s pointless doing a topless photoshoot for a glamour magazine if you intend to be a fashion model. Does the competition require you to part with any money and if so, what for? The theory that the modelling industry is full of scammers can overshadow those of us

who are genuine and run a reputable business. In order to organise a competition, there are costs involved; how the organisers choose to recoup their costs can sometimes be reflected in entry fees, for example. The best thing to do if you’re not sure whether a financial obligation is justifiable is to seek advice from a professional or better still, ask the organisers outright. Trustworthy organisers will be transparent in explaining why and at what point you may be expected to part with money. Finally, something else to consider before entering competitions is, whilst it’s great to be keen and show enthusiasm, not to over dilute yourself. Be selective with the competitions you enter. It doesn’t look great on your CV if you have entered fifty contests and won none of them. The theory goes, those who place second in a contest either should have won or will generally do better than those who win. I have seen

become bitter and arrogant choosing to ignore the opinions of professionals are only ever doing themselves and their careers an injustice. As experts in the industry, we only want to help guide and develop your media personas but we also have to be realistic and tell you when the dream you havent isn’t destined to come true. Concluding on that note, for every dream, there is a passion and a journey to get there. Whilst some of us will naturally fulfill our dreams, others will try but never succeed. With modelling it relies heavily on two things, looks and personality. And whilst I snub at what I believe to be nonsense competitions, there is also the positive element, which for a short while can give a confidence boost to someone who may not otherwise get an opportunity to live out their fifteen minutes of fame, and moreover a career in modeling. On that note, I guess, providing it doesn’t cost them their life savings to be the next, ‘Miss X’, it’s not suchEvery a badModel thing Magazine after all.

When I competed for the title of Miss Every Model Magazine I was not only excited about the prospect of winning a place in the final of Miss England but also to represent a magazine whose objective is to help young aspiring models in a turbulent and competitive industry. people as I have had years of international experience. I can give advice on modelling work such as portfolio building, photographic and runway, and the importance of health and fitness. I look forward to sharing all that I believe will be helpful to EM readers and the kind of advice that I wish I'd had when I was starting out. To be honest when I first got the news that I was to be in the Miss England final, I knew I would have a lot of work to do but I truly did not realise how much preparing I would have to do in such a short time frame of just 10 days. However, I was excited to take on this exciting challenge. During the countdown I was rushing to get my outfits and looks together. There are several rounds in the Miss England competition Unfortunately, one of them, the beach beauty round had already taken place before I received the news so I was not put forward for this which was unfortunate as I have had a lot of experience modelling beachwear and lingerie. Since I am already a model I felt confident in the modelesque and halo hair rounds although my images were the last to be seen which probably left me at a disadvantage. The editor of Every Model Magazine and I were also trying to organise press interviews while I was creating my talent video which I had such little time to work on. On the same day, I was interviewed by the Brighton based newspaper,

“I feel that I have grown as a model, public speaker and most importantly a young person that wants to make a positive difference. The Argos, who published a wonderful article about me. I would have liked to have more time to raise money for Beauty with a Purpose, which helps charities worldwide, as it is one of the most important features of the Miss England and Miss World Organisations. However, I did not have enough time to organise events or run marathons, which would have been a wonderful way to encourage people to help raise money for charity while getting involved with sports and the community. We were asked to bring a gift that would be auctioned off to raise funds for Charity. I`m so glad that I managed to organise a signed football autographed by Andrei Frascarelli. When I arrived at the host hotel I was photographed by paparazzi with the gift. After lunch in the large

dining room I started to get to know the other girls. It was great fun being together, chatting excitedly about what these few days held in store for us. I was excited to get started with boot camp. Although this fitness test was a challenge, we encouraged each other to keep going and despite the fact that we were competing for one place, it felt more like we were a team. On the second day we took part in the Mr World show. We woke up very early to rehearse with the guys. I was slightly tired but the sun was shining brightly through our huge window and as soon as I saw the amazing view I felt renewed. When rehearsals began I had a lot of fun on stage, dancing with the girls and Mr World contestants. It was wonderful meeting and talking to the guys and it was nice to learn about their different cultures and inspiring to hear about all the work that they had put into the competition. I thought that the Mr World show was organised very well to test the guys on several key attributes, such as social awareness, fitness and perseverance, talent and public speaking, all of which contribute to a well rounded person. After the winner was announced, I congratulated all the contestants and then we began rehearsing for our own final show that was to take place the following evening. energy and couldn't wait to get started. We rehearsed in the morning and after lunch we got ready for the final show. We had a lot of fun socialising while helping each other with our hair and make- up. We got changed into our eco-outfits and before I knew it the time had come for our pre-interview and parade in front of the VIP guests attending the event. After being introduced by reigning Mr England Jordan Williams, I walked along the red carpet in my ecooutfit which was inspired by the Ascot races. From my mother`s old dress I created an outfit. I sewed parts of my grandmother`s table cloth and shower curtain onto it and felt it was not only eco friendly, but something cute that I would wear again. I was very happy and excited to be there and I couldn`t wait to come out on stage and show my creation. We then quickly dressed into our evening gowns. Again, I could hear everyone cheering for the girls as they walked out on stage and I was excited to be in front of the audience. The three days of rehearsals and events for Miss England were enjoyable and rewarding despite the hard work and little sleep. I feel that I have grown as a model, public speaker and most importantly a young person that wants to make a positive difference. The Miss England competition has several elements to it such as having to self promote yourself and the 'beauty with a purpose' charity project which contributes to making you more socially aware and caring towards others and your surroundings. If you have a dream then put all your heart and soul into turning it into a reality and never let anyone try and stop you. With love, hard work and perseverance it is impossible to not succeed. It has taken me a while to discover which are the good the bad and the ugly products available on the market and to those who knock it I say to you that the best tan is a safe tan and for me that is a fake tan. body thank you very much! As a makeup artist this for me a very real problem I see often! So just to add - A face moisturiser with SPF is an absolute essential. Products I have tried and tested for this edition include my favourite fake tan, XenTan Ultra Dark. This is by far the best product I have ever used. A makeup artist told me about this it when I was running for a TV production company. I went out and bought it straight awayand I have been using it ever since. It leaves a gorgeous deep colour and if applied with the Xen-Tan mitt leaves you completely streak free. It lasts for a week and comes off nicely without you looking like you have a skin eating disease. It has a strange odour but nothing unpleasant best applied over night and washed off the next day. The Xen-Tan Ultra Dark product has a RRP of £39.99 and is available from www.xen-tan.co.uk. ‘Quick colour Rimmel sun shimmer’ in medium. This comes in at an RRP of just £6.99 and is availble from Boots, Amazon and a number of high street and online retailers. This product provides a great instant tan. It instantly gives you colour and a slight shimmer. It also comes in a matt option but I find the shimmer is great to give you a sun kissed glow. It is messy and be extremely careful if you are wearing white as it

isn't waterproof so a drop of rain can leave you patchy and streaky. Do not apply with your hands or it will leave you looking like you have been digging in the garden which is a total no no! If you do get it on your hands tooth paste is a great fake tan remover! My final absolute gem of a tan product is ‘Tough Stuff’ by Marissa Carter- This is a wonder product for the fake

MYTHS “How can you charge that? Why should I pay for it? I’ve always been told NEVER to pay for anything.” Should you provide everything for free or risk being accused of being a rogue trader? “No matter which way you look at it, there are, always have been and always will be some costs involved in starting a career in the business.”

“I expect all my models to have industry standard photographs to market them and won’t use anyone who has a snapshot. I am sick and tired of “Models often jump models who won’t to the conclusion ‘invest’ in their that an agency or career. Don’t research properly.” they have bills to pay?” Stephanie Grao, International Model, Kimberley Palmer of BMA Models Gap Presents Every Model Magazine Model Agency

Does that sound all too familiar? To us it does and to the many model agents, models and aspiring models here in the UK. OK, so back in 1998 new legislation was passed to attempt to protect innocent victims of scams in a variety of industries, including ours. Great idea. And in fairness it has served a huge purpose by keeping more people on their toes and everyone is now aware that charging a fee to simply join any form of recruitment agency, is illegal. Sadly, no amount of legislation, will ever deter the outright con artist from fleecing who they can, when they can. And irritatingly for many hard working agents and models the law has done what it often does, and swung the pendulum too far in the opposite direction. This in our opinion is largely down to the inability of some people to properly research the facts. So you get approached by a ‘model scout’. Fantastic! But when they call you up and ask you to book a £3K

Get Your FACTS Right! photo shoot with them, THEN you tell them to go and rip someone else off. But when they invite you to take part in some relevant training, or ask you to pay up to £150 to test with a photographer to build a starting out portfolio, do not automatically accuse them of being a scammer. Firstly, they are not doing anything wrong here, moreover you are for making assumptions. At the end of the day, would you work for free? Would you join an agency as a model and never expect to be paid for any work you did for them? No you would not. Some agents do have a budget to scout, sign and pay for everything to start a new model on their career path. But pretty much all of these agents recoup those costs against work a model does once they are established and out there earning. So no matter which way you look at it, there are, there always has been and always will be some costs involved in starting a career in the business. This is no different to any other career path. Media hype and heavily publicised negatives has unfortunately gone some way in trashing quite a lot of good whilst trying to combat the bad. A scenario we are all too familiar with in so many life aspects.

Let’s look at some typical comparisons. If you go to university for example, do they give you all your books for free? No. Or maybe as a training beautician is it possible to get your starting out kit from the ‘beautician fairy’ without investing in it? Obviously not. So why should modelling be any different?

“Before you jump to the conclusion that something is a scam, make sure you know what you’re talking about. Wrongful accusations could drain you of extortionate unnecessary amounts of money or it could also cost you your career if you accuse the wrong person of doing something when they haven’t.” So when an agent provides you with the opportunity of drawing resources from their contacts to gain you the lowest cost available on the market to start you out on your journey, this is not automatically some kind of scam. It just means

that different businesses have different ways of doing things, and indeed varying budgets. It doesn’t make them crooked. Everyone has to make a living and we all have costs to bear. That’s the way it is. Consider how offensive it would be for a business to be told they are running an organisation without integrity, when the reality is nothing more than a case of a lack of correct information. The problem for the offenders here of course is, once they make a comment like that, knowingly or not, they will automatically sustain a black mark. That’s human nature. How many people have you forgotten made that snipe, rude comment or insult about you during your life? Not many we imagine. Business maybe business, but it is still people that run them. The advice here is always to do your research and unless 100% sure about something, don’t voice your opinion. If you are not able to do that then we recommend being your own boss. Every job, every career and everything we do has good bits and bad bits. Ask questions by all means, but to accuse the innocent is by far the quickest way to fall. Plus it is simply bad manners. Like it or not, life includes barriers, conforming to rules and most of all, playing nice! Every Model Magazine

And the most While the world's sporting circus descended on Brazil to sample Sambas and step-overs, a different global spectacle was being held slightly closer to home. Minus security issues or worries over venues being ready on time, England played host to a different competition in the coastal resort of Torquay; it's International Conference Centre playing the role of Devon's answer to Stadium Maracana. England, and the wider UK has largely forgotten the beauty pageant. Once commanding an annual prime-time national TV slot, Miss World dominated the 70s and early 80s with big hair, bigger smiles and the never-ending refrain of "world peace". 21st Century Britain appears to have substituted its beauty queens with BGT, and pageants with Sandra Bullock parodies while relegating these competitions to late-night documentaries on Channel 4. If then, like me, you thought that this was the anachronistic

So it was here in dear old Blighty that forty-six young men came to quest for the title of the ‘World's Most Desirable Man’. The home nations were represented by Wales, Northern Ireland, and England's very own Jordan Williams. For the first time, we had a very realistic chance of winning something, without have to endure the unrealistic expectation normally reserved for our boys in Brazil. For nearly two weeks the lads spent time getting to know each other and promoting their countries, as well as the Torbay Tourist Board. They were of course Ambassadors for their countries as well as brand Morley and they behaved exceptionally. They competed individually and in teams in an attempt to win a fast-track to the final ten.

England beauty pageant. It seemed that the girls had been instructed to act in a seductive manner around their partners and that some had understandably found this uncomfortable. At best this was embarrassing; at worst, it was a display to the world wide viewership the bad old days of female objectivity and subservience is not only alive and well, but to be celebrated. The organisers and those associated would do well to recognise this inclusion for how it was perceived, or risk possible consignment to the same scrap-heap as other stereotypical prejudice. In the end it was business as usual for England. Plucky Jordan made the final top ten, acquitting himself admirably by finishing fourth overall, yet just didn't do enough to win the judges over. "These things are always objective", you tell

yourself. "They were obviously looking for a specific type of winner this year... These competitions are irrelevant". While these truisms provide comfort for those who fell short; those jealous of others' abilities - or even those who care not these competitions even exist - the fact is that they DO matter to some. Ask Mr Mexico and Mr Nigeria, who finished behind the eventual winner Mr Denmark if it matters. Of course it does. Beauty with a purpose The EM Magazine interview with 2014 winner of Miss England,

Carina Tyrrell

How does it feel to be Miss England 2014? It is extremely hard to put into words. I feel honoured to represent such a magnificent country. I feel a strong responsibility towards my country, to young women, to doctors, to my friends and family, and to the watching world. Yet I also feel extremely excited at the opportunities that this title has provided me with, to help others on a larger scale using my medical skills; raise awareness of key health issues; encourage women to be wellrounded and future leaders; and demonstrate that any individual can make a difference and help others from neighbours to the wider community. I have a lot of work ahead, as this title is not only for me, but mainly for the good that I hope to be able to do with the it. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me, and who has allowed this dream to come true. For such a life changing moment, it is an indescribable feeling. 64

“I have found that those who are supportive of the Miss England and Miss World pageants are well informed. Those who are not supportive often talk about the pageants as they were many years ago.

What made you enter the competition? When I was little, I remember wanting to be a Miss because of how happy and beautiful the girls looked. As I have become more aware and informed about what the competition is about, my reasons for wanting to be a Miss have changed. Looking at the Miss England website a year ago, the words 'not just a pretty face' caught my eye. I was interested by all the elements including raising money for the charity 'Beauty with a Purpose' for disadvantaged children around the world. Also applicants are required to demonstrate a talent, participate in a sports round run by the military as a bootcamp, the eco round where contestants make a dress out of recycled materials, the optional beach beauty and modelesque rounds and the brainy beauty round. I realised that being a Miss is about being well rounded and a role model. I believe

young women today are still in need of role models, just as I have my own. Many young women do not have their own voices and rights. I would like to encourage women to be confident in themselves, to be kind and charitable, to be independent yet collaborative, and to aspire to be future leaders. This is one of the reasons I wanted to be a Miss and entered the competition. As a student doctor I feel that I can do so much, but as Miss Cambridgeshire/Miss England/ Miss World, I feel that I can do so much more. It is shocking that in 2014 there is still so much suffering due to poor health and poverty, both in England and abroad. I want to make a difference to those who suffer every day and to those who are stricken by poverty and disease simply because of where they live or unfortunate circumstances. I want to combine my medical skills and the title of Miss England to help people on a much broader scale. What would you say to beauty pageant critics? Beauty pageants, such as Miss England and Miss World, have evolved considerably over the years. I believe there are still misunderstandings regarding the competition. It is not about looking for the most beautiful woman but looking for a young woman who is charitable, social, driven, independent yet collaborative,

and who is willing to take up a leadership role, represent her country/the world and who wants to make a positive difference with the title. It is a competition that empowers young women and encourages them to be well rounded and aspire to be role models. This year the Miss England contestants raised more than ÂŁ51,000 for the charity Beauty with a Purpose. I believe that encouraging young women to think of others and raise money for charity is fundamental in shaping the women of tomorrow. In addition, women are entitled to do as they wish within legislative boundaries. If a woman wishes to be judged on her looks, then she is entitled to wish that. If she wishes not to be judged on her looks, then she is also entitled to

wish that. I would like to think this is modern feminism. Have you found so far that any negativity has been UK based over and above other nations? If so, why do you think that is? I have found that those who are supportive of the Miss England and Miss World pageants are well informed. Those who are not supportive often talk about the pageants as they were many years ago. Times have changed and naturally beauty pageants have evolved. Everyone I have spoken to, from students, to doctors, patients, teachers, cleaners, researchers, bankers, the unemployed, etc., have been supportive when I have explained about the competition and the reasons why I am taking part. It is a great pity that such beauty pageants are still portrayed as derogatory to women by those who are either biased or not well informed. I would like to invite people to read around the competition and talk to the participants before making up their minds. It is a pity that the Miss England and Miss World competitions are no longer televised in the UK and I hope this will change before Miss World takes place this year in December in London. I would hope this will allow the public to appreciate what the competition is all about. I believe it is this misunderstanding that leads to the comments about the Every Model Magazine

I was invited to Bristol’s Green Week Ethical Fashion show. The clothes were all ethically sourced and made. Designer Kelly Lovell at We Do Re Do made my beautiful dress. I will be attending the Mauritian Open Air Festival in London on 3 August, which I am greatly looking forward to. I am looking forward to working with a variety of charities including raising money for Beauty with a Purpose, promoting and tackling health issues, attending different events, working with different photographers, meeting new people, and attending Miss World on 14 December in London. As you are training to be a doctor do you have an area of medicine you are looking at specialising in? And how are you planning on balancing your career and title over the next year? This is why I am interested in global and public health and organisations such as Oxfam, the Red Cross, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations. I would like to be at the forefront of helping people on a national, international and global scale. I have always been involved with a variety of health related projects and I am taking advantage of my year as Miss England to pursue these projects in more detail and raise awareness of key health issues. In this way I am maintaining my medical skills and you will still find me on the wards. And finally, we will be there to support you at the Miss World final in December. What can you

tell your fans and England about what you intend to do to try to secure the ultimate title of Miss World for our country and the amazing women within it? I am determined to work hard for our country and will represent the amazing women within it to the best of my ability in the Miss World final. I will ensure that my fitness level is at its full capacity, my beach body is at its best, and my talent at its top level. I will continue to raise money for the charity Beauty with a Purpose for disadvantaged children around the world. This naturally means a lot to me. The Miss World ethos of Beauty with a Purpose is in line with my own goals. I went into Miss England because I believed I could make a difference to those who are ill and suffering in our country. I am going into Miss World because I believe I can make a difference to those who are stricken by poverty and disease on a global scale. There is still so much to do to help relieve human suffering. I am devoting my life to help those in need and to do this on a global scale would be an immense privilege. There is nothing more rewarding in the world, than helping someone who needs you. Helping the world with the crown in one hand and my stethoscope in the other is my purpose. This is beauty, with a purpose.
