Being a

model on the

In July 2015, I, Maria, a 46 year old Operational Manager f rom Birmingham found myself posing for a photographer out in London’s famous Leicester S quare. I was conf ident, excited and unaware of my surroundings, simply enjoying ever y moment. ‘Thank you for making my job so easy Maria, said the young photographer from Poland. Do you know I actually believed I had done that very thing, made his job easy? How on earth did this happen? I had never done any modelling in my life and I certainly was no expert but here I was the wrong side of 40 with no concern at all for my age, living a dream. Now I’m not one for using the word coincidence lightly and I will not attach it to this experience. I was right where I was because of belief in myself and good old fashioned high esteem.

Your picture will reach the hearts of others if you start from the inside out. Now having said all of the above with great conviction there was a burning question within me. Why? Why am I here? I had no desire to go modelling at this stage of my life and in all honesty I didn’t think this was a dream of mine 30 years prior, or was it? When I was 16 years old I was so unaware, so as most folk do I went with the world. ‘Get a job in a bank, Maria; you’re good with numbers’ I would hear my parents say. They meant well for me but they too were conditioned to go with the world. If only I and my parents who by that time were in their forties had the insight, belief, and courage that I do today? If I had what I have today would I have become a model? I don’t know the answer to that question but I do believe I would have done what was meant for me and would have been the best version of whatever that was because I would have not only concentrated on my outsides, I would have looked to find my truth from the inside. So back to my question, what was being asked of me? I knew that the modelling world was calling me but for a different reason than the obvious one. If modelling had been for me and if I and my parents had the inside secret I would have been one hell of a model. Without it I may have done ok but I know I would never have reached my true potential. So I concluded I was being asked to reach out to you. If you are a young up-and-coming model or the parent of a model with a dream I urge you to start from the inside out. Your picture will reach the hearts of others if you start from the inside out. Seven years ago I embarked on this road less travelled and I have been having a ball and doing what was meant for me. Yes some things come with age but most of our truth and glories come from the inner voice within that just doesn’t get enough air time. Give that voice a say, it’s your birth right to reach your true potential. Be a model on the inside…………

makeup BAG

Using red lipstick to cover tattoos, mascara as shoe polish and primer as a make up remover are just some of the hidden talents of the cosmetics hiding in your make up bag. Online hair and beauty retailer Hair trade.com have looked into the alternative uses of common make up products. Other uses include how to use one make up product as another cosmetic, such as turning blusher into nail varnish, highlighter as a lip plumper and eye shadow as a brow definer.

For those who don’t want to shell out on new make up fads, the site suggests how to use products most women already have, such as an eye shadow as a highlighter or concealer as primer. Joanne Dodds from Hairtrade.com says “Make up is something we love to experiment with but some of the alternative uses we found came as a surprise to us. The best thing we’ve found out is that you can make your products stretch further than they already do. If you’re out and about and have forgotten your eyeliner, it’s so handy to know how you can make your eye shadow do exactly the same job. With new trends in make up coming round every few weeks, it’s good to know that the staples in your make up bag can be multi-tasking.” Red lipstick as tattoo cover up Trace your tattoo with red lipstick, fill it in then cover with concealer and powder. The red acts as a neutraliser to the ink and will cover it up.

Mascara as shoe polish Did you know your trusty mascara can act as shoe polish when you don’t have any to hand? Simply dab some onto kitchen roll and apply to black leather shoes to hide scuffs and marks. Petroleum jelly to set perfume Dabbing on petroleum jelly to your pulse points before spritzing perfume will make it last longer. The ointment is air and watertight so will seal in fragrance better than applying to dry skin. Foundation as cream blusher Cream blushers are having a moment on the catwalks at the moment but instead of investing in a new one, simply put some of your favourite powder blusher onto the back of your hand and mix with a little foundation. Apply the beautiful pale colour to the apples of your cheeks.

Argan oil for nails This miracle oil has been hailed a saviour for hair but it can also be used on your nails too. Apply to any dry cuticles in need of some tender loving care.

Hairspray as make up setter Many brands have created pricey make up setter sprays but a good quality hairspray will do just as good a job. Spray around 20cm away from your face after applying make up and once you’ve cooled down from any heated hair styling.

Matt eye shadow as eyebrow definer If you want to rock a power brow look but can’t afford yet another product, have a root through your old eye shadows and find one that suits your eyebrow colour. Make sure the powder is matt not shimmery and apply with an angled eye shadow brush for extra definition.

Concealer as eye shadow primer If you suffer from oily lids then eye shadows can slip away into creases easily. If you don’t want to buy yet another product, try dabbing your concealer onto your eyelids to act as a base to eye shadow.

Old mascara wand as root touch up tool Once you’ve finished with a mascara, keep the brush and put it through the dishwasher. Then when it comes touching up your roots, apply your hair dye with the brush. It will distribute the dye evenly and be more precise than what comes with the kit.

Eyeshadow as eye liner Dampen an angled eye shadow brush or cotton bud and use on eye shadow pallette. The water will intensify the pigments to give a strong bold line. Primer as make up remover Perfect for those sneezes when you’re applying mascara. Dot your primer onto a cotton bud to clear away any mistakes without smudging. Lipstick as blusher Apply lippy then blot with heel of hand and gently press onto your cheeks for a healthy glow!

Blush as nail varnish Simply scrape off a bit of your blusher onto a clear surface then mix with a clear nail varnish. You’ll have a lovely flattering tone that will compliment any outfit. Shimmery blushes will add a bit of sparkle to the polish too. Eye shadow as highlighter Most girls have a pearly shimmery eye shadow in their make up bag somewhere, put it to good use. Mix a tiny amount with your facial powder and place on cheekbones, t-zone and along the front of your nose. Highlighter as lip plumper Don’t shell out for expensive lip plumping products when you can create the illusion with highlighter. Apply your lipstick, then draw a small cross across the middle part of your lips and cupid’s bow with highlighter. Blend and blot for more fuller looking lips.

an interview held in the glamorous Beach Blanket Babylon, Notting Hill, London. I spoke with some of the other candidates and the reigning winner the beautiful Grace Levy. The girls were friendly, chatty and unsurprisingly nervous. They all looked different to each other; some girls were tall while others shorter and some ladies were thin and others curvier. It was nice to see that every girl there was beautiful in her own way and confident in her own skin. Before the interviews took place, the director, Paula Abbandonato, introduced herself. I was touched to hear that the organisation helps Strongbones Children`s Charitable Trust, which aids children

women, by being positive and strong role models, helping these organisations and by inspiring others to not be afraid to go after their dreams. I was also encouraged by the advice that Paula gave us all. She told us that every girl there had the potential to be the next Miss Universe Great Britain and to focus and work hard on being the best version of ourselves possible. Doing the best you can and not comparing yourself to others is advice that I always give young people, especially aspiring models, who feel pressured into looking a certain way. Critics love to say that modelling and pageantry is detrimental to people’s confidence and makes them feel constantly inadequate as they fail to attain an unrealistic body shape and face constant rejection. Comparing our looks or achievements to others is something we naturally and, often, subconsciously do to erroneously determine our worth. If your sense of worth comes from winning or thinking that you are better than others than you will be enslaved by the industry and society`s perception of beauty. Your sense of worth needs to come from within, from your own personal journey and not the prize. All the hard work you put in says more about you than anything else. We need to remember that we each have different personalities, skills, abilities and physical attributes and we must use all the unique qualities we have been blessed with and make the most of them in every opportunity we have. What impresses me the most about these

A

new social network for style that gives the millions of influencers posting their style and ‘outfit of the day’ posts the ability to make money from their passion for fashion. There have been 88 million posts shared using the #OOTD hashtag on Instagram, which works out as an #OOTD post every 2 seconds. On Twitter in the last year alone, 4 million tweets have been tagged with the hashtag. With millions of social media users sharing photos of their outfits and influencing the fashion buying choices of millions more, one entrepreneur has spotted a gap in the market – and created a way for influencers to make money from their passion for fashion. So the app is designed to give everyday social media users a way to monetise their influence. By posting outfit images on Stylezz, influencers can quickly and simply tag the items of clothing featured. Stylezz EM 24

features more than 1 million individual items from more than 100 of the world’s top high-street and designer brands, including Topshop, Yves Saint Laurent, All Saints & Reiss.

Stylezz has calculated that influencers with 50,000 to 250,000 followers can earn up to £26,000 a year and one with 250,000 or more can earn up to £156,000 annually, if they publish on average five posts a week. Stylezz is a streamlined platform for both social media users and followers, by allowing the influencer to socially market themselves to their fan-base, whilst simultaneously acting as a simple way for fans and followers to purchase the clothing worn by their favourite influencers. Every time a follower purchases tagged items, the

person who posted the outfit will earn a percentage of the sale from the brand, through Stylezz. Users can shop by cost, category, gender and by searching for an influencer, brand or retailer. By clicking on an influencer’s outfit, they are able to view each different item separately, select it and be automatically redirected to that brand or retailer’s checkout

page. Alternatively, the user can add items of clothing to a ‘wish list’ to purchase later on. The app aims to create a unique shopping experience for the public as well as a simple platform for social media

A Fashion social network has been launched allowing millions of influencers to monetise posts and #OOTDs influencers and bloggers to make money from their posts. Janny Kulah, founder of Stylezz, said, “The popularity of fashion influencers has soared in the past year, with tens of millions of people tagging social media posts with popular hashtags, but the majority of people are still struggling to monetise their sizeable follower bases. Stylezz is the answer, and is most easily described as the fashionable love child of Amazon and Instagram.

“We all know that social media users influence the buying habits of their followers – so why shouldn’t they earn from that influence? We also know from research we’ve done that many people like to buy the items they see on their favourite social media accounts and through Stylezz, we’ve created the perfect way for people to do both.” There have been 88 million posts shared using the #OOTD hashtag on Instagram in total, which equates to more than 20 million in the last year and 8

million with #outfitoftheday. On Twitter in the last year alone, 4 million tweets have been tagged with #OOTD. That’s nearly 300,000 in the last 30 days alone, or 10,000 every day on average. 280,000 tweets have used #outfitoftheday in the last year.

here are two types of people in this world - ‘the talkers’ and ‘the doers’- which one are you?

I’ve always been quite independent but in the last few years my confidence and independence has grown considerably. I realise now, whilst I cannot control my destiny, I can certainly help to shape it and by doing that I need to work hard to ensure I achieve my personal goals.

In my last column I spoke about life as a new Mum and coping with identity changes. A few months on, my identity is pretty solid now and I’m very content with where I am- still working on ditching the guilt that comes with being a working Mummy but I hear guilt comes with the job! The work-life balance is a struggle for us all for different reasons. Are we

spending enough time with our loved ones? Are we taking good enough care of ourselves? I have deleted what I’m about to write several times but am deciding to keep it in- I recently missed wishing one of my closest friends a Happy Birthday purely because I was so absorbed in the mania of life. Needless to say, I felt extremely bad. I have realised the people we choose to associate with has a massive impact on our lives. Consider the people in your circle and the support they give you. After giving birth to my daughter, I promised myself to never let negative energy surround me by choice. I have detoxed my life of anyone that I believe is detrimental to my existence and makes me question who I am and where I am heading. From doing so, I’m feeling stronger every day.

DOER words by Fay L Hill

For the sixth consecutive year, I organised the Miss London beauty pageant- the regional heat in association with Miss England and Miss World. In 2011 (with some persuasion from Ruthie Deane!) I took the competition over completely clueless about pageantry and what was in store. Needless to say, I loved it enough to keep going and every year, I love it a little more. When I signed the agreement to run this year’s event, I found myself justifying my decision to loved ones assuring them I could manage being a Mum, running a full-time business, and organising an event for one of the most coveted pageant titles. Admittedly I had a few breakdowns along the way but this was all forgotten when I totalled up the amount raised for charity by my finalist- just shy of £7,000- in one month. Over the years of being involved with Miss England I have met friends for life- one of them being the Editor of EM, Ruthie Deane, and my title holders, in particular Rissikat Bade and Amy Willerton. More than this, I have met the most incredible women

It’s not easy but nothing worth having ever is.

who inspire me to keep on running Miss London and offering the women of our most precious City a platform to stand up and be counted. This year I met some of my favourite finalists yet; firstly, my winner Whitney Martins who is already one of the most proactive ladies I have ever had the pleasure of working with and is going to go so, so far! Another lady, Kailey Willetts; she has lost a staggering five stone in eighteen months and is now promoting a healthy lifestyle, as well as working with gay charities to crush stigmas in communities. Alongside her was finalist, Nicola Tompkins; a serving Police Constable that was born with dyspraxia effecting everything from her speech to the way she walked. Despite being told she would have severe learning difficulties, I watched her with tears in my eyes as she so eloquently stood on stage infront of hundreds of people thanking her Mum and Dad for their support. She has achieved multiple levels of education creditation, including GCSEs and A-Levels, and is working to become

a Detective Inspector. Finally, Mollie Gallagher- our youngest finalist, yet she had a maturity far beyond her years. Mollie is establishing herself as a real figure head in the construction industry as she works to be one of the 1% of women to have qualified as a chartered surveyor by the time she turns 22. She is also a carer for her Mum. My ultimate discoveries though are two of the most incredible people I have ever met, Jade and Junior. Both patients of St Christophers Hospice (our chosen charity) Jade is eighteen and a victim of cancer. She gave the most humble, heartfelt speech as she explained to my finalists to stop getting caught up with the mundane, negativity of life and instead cherish every second. Initially Jade was reluctant to be involved in Miss London as she had preconceptions about pageantry and felt nervous to meet the ladies. By the end of it, she came to my final looking every inch the beauty queen, ditching her wig and rocking her new, pixie crop- she even presented our charity award on stage. Alongside Jade is Junior- an unsung hero who was aggressively suffocated after he bravely stepped in to rescue a stranger that was being attacked- he has been left brain damaged and paralysed. Through the help of our fundraising, over the year I have known Junior, he has come so far. He is now learning to walk again and is working with open-Universities as an inspirational speaker. Considering his Mum was told he wouldn’t even survive the night after he was left for dead, this isn’t a miracle but a complete example of what a true fighter and determination can achieve. Though I could never categorise myself in any where near the same league as these amazing people, I do share their passion for fight and determination to prove others wrong. At the end of Miss London I delivered a speech saying, as much as I just want my baby girl to be proud of me, I will be exceptionally proud if she becomes half of the lady that my finalists are. Completing Miss London proved to me that I can do what I want to do, if I just work that little harder than others are prepared to. It’s not easy but nothing worth having ever is. EM 28
