Every Model Magazine

o ref lect upon another year is inevitable as this one closes, but to remember some of the tragedy seen during 2015 is never so poignant than at Christmas time. Yes, we should focus on the positives and celebrate how lucky we are. But let us not forget those who have lost their lives, loved ones, futures, hopes and dreams. The acts of terror seen across the World this year is horrific. We send our love and thoughts out to all those affected. We have been significantly lucky this year in the wealth of love and support received from so many. A distinct feeling of camaraderie is tremendously rewarding when working as part of a team. EMG are a small group of dedicated professionals dotted around the world. By virtue of technology our humble but professional organisation is so proud to be able to operate on an International basis. With models found and trained by us here in the UK we are able to successfully place them in a number of countries thus extending their careers to the highest possible level. We have been somewhat dismayed at the lack of real knowledge many potential super stars seem to have however. I myself have seen some really high end potential models this year who are seemingly so uneducated about the reality of what is

expected of them that we simply cannot take them under our wings. This may possibly down to some media portrayal of the industry and bizarre thinking that everything genuine should in fact be FREE OF CHARGE! Sadly the scammers will continue to rip people off. People will carry on forking out extortionate amounts of money on dreadful photographs in the belief that they will be granted fame in return. People will still be put off by investing sensibly in what could be a potentially lucrative and immensely enjoyable career simply by confusing a scam with a genuine opportunity, education and career development. I have said this a million times, and I will say it again; in ANY career there is a level of ESSENTIAL investment in order to be successful. And by investment I do not exclusively mean financial. Effort, time, commitment and bloomin’ hard work are ALL elements required for true success. Would you consider a shop selling medical books to med students a scam? What about university fees? Text books, courses, qualifications, training; all of these things have a cost to them both in time and money. And you don’t expect someone else to

You have to work for success, no matter who you are! learn your craft for you do you? But for some ridiculous reason there is a believed MYTH that the modelling industry seems to be able to magically find fully competent self made models with a vast number of high end pictures for free! THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN! It doesn’t happen for any model or any agent. Whether an agent is prepared to pay for initial outlay of costs for a model is entirely up to them, but even if they do they will ALWAYS recoup their outlay from your first few modelling jobs. So whether you invest wisely yourself in order to have a higher chance of a professional agency signing, or you wait for luck to help you on your way, the outcome financially will be exactly the same. But if you wait too long you may simply find that your time has been and gone all because you didn’t do your homework properly! DO your research. DO read anything you are considering to do carefully and properly. DO NOT invest in a portfolio ANYWHERE with the belief this will be the only photoshoot you will need

to be successful. DO NOT believe anything without evidence. ASK questions. ASK an agent for examples of their models work. RESEARCH and LEARN your craft. You MUST be prepared to work hard. You MUST expect to invest in your career. You MUST NOT believe that because you are pretty that success will just happen for you. It WON’T. You have to work for success, no matter who you are! So anyway... rant over! But you get what I’m saying right? So moving on... inside I did th this edition we have is #sham !! bundles of seasonal eful goodies we would love you to try. Christmas gift ideas if you haven’t been ridiculously organised, bought and wrapped them before December (not that I would do anything quite so insane). We bring you the latest modelling news and views, beauty tips and insider secrets from our MUA and HMU columnists. So that all that remains for me to say is a huge thank you to our readers for your continued support. I wish you a very happy Christmas and very much look forward to seeing you all in 2016. So as another year draws to a close our panel have had the extremely difficult task of selecting our annual model search winner. This year has seen hundreds of entries across the genres. We have seen some amazing new talent and successfully signed and placed models across the world during 2015. Well done to everyone involved this year.

and the winner is

gracie-violet As most of our readers know we run an annual model search looking for new talent throughout the UK. This year we restructured our selection process in order to further expand opportunities we can offer to aspiring models. Last year our winner Frankie, an adult model now working within the curvy sector, we 10

Every Model Magazine

have successfully placed with agents in the UK, America, Germany and Australia. She is currently completing her university studies whilst preparing for what is set to be a very successful international modelling career. Throughout 2015 we have seen every genre of model from fashion, to curvy and mini models.

Within the child model sector we have found and successfully placed over ten children who are now professional working models. Whilst looking at our successful applicants this year and narrowing it down to a final five, Gracie immediately stood out as being a potential winner. At the age of just five years, she is clearly

a beautiful little girl. Flowing blonde locks, beyond incredible blue eyes and perfect porcelain skin. She has it all! But more importantly this little lady is a pure delight to be around. She is polite, happy and takes direction without question. If only everyone in the world were as easy to be around as GracieViolet, life would surely be so much easier. She is a credit to her parents and we are utterly thrilled to have her as part of the EMG team. Now officially signed as an elite model managed by EMM, Gracie has also secured an agency signing with top child model agent Bonnie & Betty. All prepped and ready to go, with council registration now complete she has already been selected for a casting at Warner Brothers. Congratulations Gracie-Violet! You are a true superstar and we can’t wait to watch you progress within your modelling career. Hair and Beauty Tips for Christmas The hair and beauty experts from Hairtrade.

com have listed their top ten tips for getting ready this Christmas season. If you’ve ever found yourself getting ready for the staff Christmas party in the office toilets then you’ll know the importance of being hair and beauty savvy in all areas. From carefully gluing on your false lashes to holding a steady nerve when drawing on your eyeliner, there’s a lot that goes in to looking great at Christmas. Fortunately, the hair and beauty experts from Hairtrade.com have listed their top ten tips for getting through the party season in style. Whether it’s tricks on how to achieve bouncy curls or how to perfect the perfect makeup, the list covers it all. There are also ideas on how to make your nails last as long as possible as well as reminders on things you may have forgotten like teeth whitening and fake tan. Hair and beauty expert Joanne Dodds says, “Christmas is a girl’s best friend as it creates an excuse for us to get dressed up and look great. From protecting your hair and skin from the cold to getting your lips ready for that all important mistletoe moment, everyone needs some beauty tips for winter. Our list sums up all the areas you need to think about this season and has some great tips on how to achieve the perfect Christmas look.” 16

Every Model Magazine

December is definitely the season to grab the charcoal eyeliner and some sparkly eyeshadow ready for the staff Christmas party. The key is to blend your chosen shades together with the softer colour in the corner and the darker shade going out.

Gel nails When you haven’t got a lot of time on your hands gel nails are definitely the way forward. Pick a wintery shade such as plum and do your nails yourself with an LED lamp. That way they’ll last from Christmas to New Year’s without a chip.

Exfoliate your lips Mistletoe, anyone? If you’re preparing to pucker up this Christmas then make sure you’ve been exfoliating your lips. Simply mix some honey and brown sugar together and rub it on your lips so you’ll have lipstick ready smackers in no time.

Eyelash extensions False eyelashes can be a lifesaver but when you’re trying to put them on in the staff toilets it can be a nightmare. Invest in some good quality lashes and make sure you have plenty of glue in your bag. Practice

at home so that when the time comes you’re an eyelash connoisseur.

Gradual fake tan In December it can be easy to forget about your legs which means they’re covered up and getting paler by the day. Gradual fake tan can be a lifesaver in Winter as it takes minimal effort and is streak-free.

Teeth whitening All those peppermint mochas and gingerbread lattes you’ve been drinking over Autumn might mean your teeth could do with a pick me up. Grab some whitening strips from the pharmacist and use sparingly to hide those stains.

Moisturise your skin Winter is harsh on your skin as the cold air-dries you out and can even cause problems like eczema and psoriasis to flair up. Make sure to drink even more water than before and moisturise every morning whilst your skin is still damp.

toasty inside. The change in temperature dries out your hair so start using moisturising conditioner and use a deep-condition hair mask to add an extra shine to your hair.

Contouring The art of contouring is no mean feat but get it right and your makeup will be party perfect. Christmas is the perfect time to give it a go as you can focus more on the highlighting aspect as a way of making your face glow along with the fairy lights.

Perfect hairstyle Every season has a different hairstyle trend but with Christmas you can’t go wrong with some big tousled curls. Heated rollers are an easy way of getting the look and they can be worn whilst your wrapping your Christmas presents – easy.

Hair care All hair types can suffer during Winter from the constant switching between cold outside to warm and Every Model Magazine

My Model

Diary Frankie Spooner Model

EMG model Frankie is now signed worldwide! I am back at University now in Newcastle studying for my final year and cannot believe how quickly the time has gone by. I will be so sad to leave as I almost feel like Newcastle is more my home than where I actually live, in Cambridge. When I do graduate I will be moving to London and hopefully pursuing my modelling career. As I will be in the city I will be available to go to more castings as commuting from Newcastle to London is not easy (or cheap!). That is one thing I won’t miss about Uni – the long and tedious train journeys. Although I may be coming up again next September for freshers week as I missed my last one this year. I was so disappointed to be missing out but what I did instead was much more exciting. I went to the Philippines to do a shoot with Avon! When I found out I got the job I couldn’t really absorb the information, it just seemed so surreal. When I did get my tickets through and boarded the plane though it was a different story, I felt so lucky and happy to be given this opportunity to see a different city and be travelling half way around the world! My flight stopped over in Dubai and unfortunately I missed my connecting flight 22

Every Model Magazine

which then led to a seventeen hour delay which wasn’t ideal, but I ended up seeing some of the sights so that made up for the long wait. When I arrived in the Philippines I met with the woman who was looking after me and she was lovely and very friendly. After a couple of days of being there I realised that the Philippino people are extremely friendly and accommodating which I was grateful for as I was quite nervous for the shoot but as soon as I arrived on set I was made to feel at ease completely. We shot for pretty much the whole day. Which meant that I was literally in my underwear all day as that is what we were shooting. It was so much fun, I enjoyed every minute and hope to shoot with the team over there again next year. Before the Philippines I was in Germany visiting my agency over there. Again, I was quite nervous as I had never been to Germany before and can’t speak German (although I did learn a few phrases from a very helpful taxi driver!) but when I arrived at the agency I met with Maggie who owns it and she was very friendly and gave me lots of advice about what to expect from the German clients. I had lots of castings over the 3 days I was

there and (typically!!) my phone started playing up which meant that my internet was too, and trying to find your way around a city you don’t know in a language you don’t speak with no google maps was definitely a learning experience! It just meant I had to be extra organised which is not bad thing, especially when turning up to castings late is not looked upon highly at all. Overall, I’ve had an amazing couple of months and hope to have opportunities like the ones I have had again soon. Every Model Magazine

Yes it’s that time of year again readers December… Firstly remember the change in weather. Cold harsh temperatures have a great impact on the skin. To avoid skin damage after your cleansing routine in the morning apply factor 30 to help combat dryness and add a layer of protection. Get in the Christmas spirit tis the season to be JOLLY after all, so smile, happy girls are the prettiest.

Ok let's get down to the nitty gritty. If you’re after a day time look with minimal makeup remember that pale and interesting is in this season! Fresh faced, light foundation, a little dust of setting powder (opt for translucent) with blush on top. Try out warm tones like apricot, peach and light cappuccino shades. Warm delicate tones embrace femininity. For those with deeper skin tones try the same shades with more intensity. DO NOT contour your face as it's very over powering. Keep it simple so it's effortless and remains classy and chic. For the eyes, light tones such as violet, lavender, cappuccino, sands, nudes and greys with a light application blending outwards. Always use less as you can always add to it. For a more intense look use the Browns slate grey black soft pencil from the inner to the outer corner of the eye. This doesn't have to be exact as by using small brush you can dust along the same line from the bottom upwards until any harsh block colouring fades. Lips can be bold! Use berry colours but if you find it too dark

add lighter shade or a little foundation on top. Allow yourself the freedom to experiment nobody knows your face as well as you do! So for the evening and maybe going out from work? NO NEED TO PANIC... just add more intense shades on top of your day makeup… Add lashes. Re-apply eyeliner top and bottom. Deeper more intense eyeshadow. Glitter gel on the eye lid. Shimmer powder on sides of face. Lip liner. Light bronzes on cheeks, forehead and under chin. Fix with a setting spray as it sets makeup so will last much longer. Products to try: Estée Lauder double wear foundation lasts up to 15 hours! Always ask for a colour match.

Have fun be you for who else can you be? Embrace your own power. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Danielle X Every Model Magazine

Be PREPARED

ns mea she t in t a wh kept i e sure Not , but I’v L. Ed x e O r L e h ! way any

words by EMG HMU

Brankica Drinic

So you have been booked for a shoot. Whether it is your first or fifth time, you are always expected to come prepared to get started so we have compiled a super quick beauty checklist of things you need to consider before you go. First impressions are lasting impressions after all, right?

it is easier to take away rather than add when it comes to your brows! I don’t think Cara would be very pleased if you turned up with one hair on your brows, do you?

HAIR

PRE SHOOT BEAUTY CHECKLIST

DO have clean, dry, combed through hair. DON’T try to style your hair before a job. There will always be a hair stylist in the team, so turning up with freshly washed and dried hair is ideal as it is ready for them to get their hands on. Coming to a shoot with hair looking like you should be in the cast of Hairspray is a definite red flag. It is often best to wash your hair the night before as literally washed hair can be a little slippery to work with. Find the right balance for you.

FACE

BODY

DO moisturise your skin to make it fresh and ready for makeup. DON’T turn up with a full face of makeup on. Makeup is for the artist to do, not you! After all, that is the reason they are there! Ensure you have cleansed your skin with a gentle cleanser followed by a toner and finally moisturising it. If you don’t have a cleanser and toner that is okay, simply moisturise your skin after washing it and you’re good to go.

teeth

Never forget your teeth! They are key to your overall look. Keep them regularly cleaned and make sure you don’t have any bits of food or lipgloss on them when you shouldn’t!

BROWS

DO wax/shave before the shoot. DON’T come with half a waxed leg. Photoshop may be a miracle for photographers but making their job easier is also your job, so turning up with freshly waxed/ shaved under arms and legs is essential. You can be expected to wear lingerie at a test shoot so make sure you get rid of unwanted hairs at least two days beforehand. Remember that if you decide to wax and have never done so before leave a few days gap just in case you develop a reaction or redness. most important of all is to get enough sleep and drink plenty of water to keep your skin and body healthy in prepararation for the shoot or job you have been cast for.

DO groom them. DON’T pluck your eyebrows to oblivion. Eye brows are important because they frame your face and the best thing to do is to let them grow into their own natural shape and groom them or if you cannot do it yourself go to a professional that you trust. The worst case scenario is that the makeup artist will grab some tweezers and sort out the stray hairs for you. Remember that

questions regarding a skin care routine and which products to use. Before applying your make-up, use a moisturiser on your cleansed skin that is designed for your skin type. If you are unsure of your skin type you could ask an assistant at a beauty counter or your beauty therapist. Apply it gently all over your face and neck, use your ring fingers to circle it around your eyes, this will help to stimulate the blood flow and make you to look awake. Use a primer before applying some foundation or BB cream.

Illuminating (cream or powder) helps to give a 'dewey' look to your skin. Apply it sparingly, in a C shape going from above your eyebrow and around to the top of your cheek bone. Set your foundation with a dusting of face powder, a translucent powder will suffice. This will help to absorb excess sebum. Lightly apply a bronzer with a large brush in circular motions. Apply it to areas that would normally tan in the sun (forehead, nose, upper cheeks). Lightly dust the apples of your cheeks with a blusher that suits your colouring. Eye-shadow can be done in three easy steps. Light, medium, and dark. Apply the light to the upper arch and into the crease of the eye, apply a little near to the tear duct to help the eye appear brighter. The medium shade needs applying into the crease of the eye and onto the lid. The dark will only need to be used lightly as this is for a 'day-time' look. Apply it into the crease on the far side of your eyes and over half of the lid (the mid to outer area). Using the same dark

eye-shadow apply it as an eye-liner using an angled eye-shadow brush. Apply it along the top of your eyelashes (avoid applying it near to your tear ducts as your eyes will appear darker and smaller) instead, apply it from the mid to outer area above your top and bottom eyelashes. To achieve beautiful curled lashes use a heated eyelash curler before applying mascara. Be careful not to use too much as clumped mascara is not a great look. Eyebrows should look natural. Definitely avoid the 'drawn-on' look. A light eyebrow pencil can be applied in the direction of the hair growth. Brush it through to ensure the pencil is blended well. A light shade of lipstick or lip gloss to compliment your colouring will give a 'finished-off' look to your daytime make-up. Lastly... Look in a mirror right before your casting and check that your face and teeth are ready (i.e., avoid a poppy seed bagel beforehand). Once you are happy with your look... ...Smile, be confident, and let your personality shine through. Every Model Magazine

We all want to look our best especially those of us who are in the modelling or arts industry where competition is fierce and our looks and image are pivotal in landing contracts. Not only should you look your best at castings and interviews but also industry events such as fashion shows and parties where you should use the opportunity to present yourself as best as you can and get to know other professionals in the industry. At these events you have more freedom with your choice of outfit, as opposed to a casting where you should wear simple fitted clothes to best show off your figure, so take the opportunity to flaunt your individuality. Style is a matter of personal taste and we should wear what we feel most comfortable in as it reflects our personality. However it’s important to keep in mind that there are different types of clothes, make-up and hairstyles that are best suited to you depending on your physical attributes such as facial traits, skin colour and body shape. This knowledge enables you to use it to your advantage. You don’t have to follow fashion trends that you don’t actually like or are not suited to you or don’t improve your appearance simply because top fashion houses and celebrities have decided that that particular fashion should be a trend. Dressing according to your body type is essential to look your best. The objective is to look balanced. Although our bodies are all unique, fashion experts tend to categorise

the female body shape into 6 groups: busty, apple-shaped, slender, hour-glass, pearshaped and petite. There are different styles and clothes that best flatter us depending on our shape by highlighting our more attractive features.

The Busty body This is where your upper body is broader than your hips. You have either a large bust or an athletic upper body with broad shoulders and a wide back and narrow hips and a smaller bottom. To make your figure appear more proportional and create an hourglass looking body, you should wear clothes that de-emphasise your upper body and accentuate your lower body especially your waist and hips. Choose clothes that add curves at your hips and create a defined waist. Showing off your legs is also a good idea as long as you do not wear something too short as doing so will contribute to making your upper body look broader. Go for outfits with either short or long sleeves and thick straps as they are flattering and offer good support when wearing tops, shirts and dresses. V or U necklines will make your bust look higher and A- line skirts or dresses will help balance your upper and lower body as they create an appearance of curves. Additionally, lower waistlines contribute in elongating your torso. It`s best to stay clear of strapless and spaghetti straps, detail on the bust such as frills and sequins and tight elastic fabrics through the torso. You Every Model Magazine

“Choose clothes that add curves at your hips and create a defined waist. may also find it beneficial to wear darker colours, which are more slimming, on your upper body and brighter colours or detail on your lower body.

The Apple body An apple body is defined as one where your upper and lower body are slim or proportional but you possess a larger belly. Don`t worry if you tend to put on weight around your mid-section. There are plenty of outfits that can help conceal a rounder stomach. You should select outfits that add curves to your lower body and create a defined waist. A- line skirts, especially high-waisted ones, and wrap dresses make a stylish day time outfit while empire-waisted dresses make a stunning evening look for women with apple bodies as they define the waistline above the midsection, are loose below the waistline so they conceal your belly and add curves to your bust and hips as your waist appears smaller in comparison. Highwaisted or belted tops have the same concealing effect 38

from wearing tops and dresses that are form fitting all over or flowy or unstructured around the waist such as empire-waist tops or dresses that do not justice to your slim waist.

The hour-glass body on your midsection as they draw attention to your bust and fit loosely around your stomach area. Avoid wearing outfits that accentuate your midsection such as ones with natural waistlines, fitted tops, high-waisted trousers and horizontal stripes around your stomach which will all make your midsection appear larger.

The slender body

If you have a slender body you possess a lean physique, a small bust and narrow hips. You should accentuate your thin waist, shoulders and legs and can create some curves at your bust and hips to display a more hour-glass figure. Go for strappy, short or long sleeved tops and shirts with ruffles or detail such as sequins which will add dimension to your bust and make your waist look smaller in comparison. A fitted jacket or blazer will draw attention to your thin waist and make your hips look larger. Additionally, boot-cut trousers or flared skirts are smart choices as they are fitted around the waist so will emphasise

your slim waist and the larger hems at the bottom will create an appearance of a shapely figure. High-waisted, fitted trousers also flatter your figure as they display your thin waist and make your legs look even longer. For a great feminine or evening look, select either short or long dresses with an asymmetric or sweetheart neckline which will create the appearance of a fuller bust, or fitted dresses or ones with a belt at the waistline and that flare out at your hips or long dresses with a slit which will add curves and show off your lean legs. Refrain

An hour-glass figure is characterised as one that is evenly proportioned with a full bust and hips and a narrow waist. To best flaunt your natural curves you should emphasise your small waist so go for outfits with natural waistlines, belted waists, form fitted tops, high-waisted trousers and wrap dresses. Opt for v-necklines and open neckline tops, shirts and dress which flatter a full chest. For a stylish day or evening look, body hugging outfits such as pencil skirts and form fitting dresses, either short or long, will show off your proportionally curvy body. For an evening gown, you should select a form fitting dress such as a mermaid styled dress or a body hugging dress with a slit which will add further in displaying your feminine figure. Stay clear of shapeless styles that conceal your small waist and natural curves such as tunics, baby doll dresses, oversized shirts, cardigans and dresses and empire-waist styles.

The pearshaped body A pear- shaped body is one where your bust and shoulders

are narrower than your hips while your waist is slim. To create a more balanced looking figure you should add volume to your upper body. Opt for outfits that accentuate your small waist, add volume to your bust and shoulders and draw attention away from your hips. That way your upper and lower body will appear more proportional. Go for form fitted tops and natural waistlines to emphasise your small waist and open, V and boat necklines or detail on the bust to broaden your shoulders and make your bust appear fuller. Opt for clothes with body clinging fabrics on your top half to draw attention to your bust, shoulders and waist and go for looser fabrics on your bottom half to deemphasise your hips. For a casual or daytime look, you could wear a tailored jacket which will draw attention to your shoulders and wide-leg trousers, as the wider hems

will make your hips look narrower, or an A-line skirt as it does not cling to your body. For a more formal or evening look go for dresses that are fitted all the way down to your waist and fall loosely or flare out below your waist. Pick dresses with a more open neckline or strapless dresses which will show off your bust and shoulders. Sweetheart necklines are also flattering as their curved shape helps to create the appearance of a fuller bust. Patterns and details such as ruffles or embellishment on your chest or shoulders will also contribute to adding volume. Refrain from wearing fitted skirts or trousers such as pencil skirts and skinny jeans, very short hem-lines and oversized or shapeless tops and jumpers.

The petite body If you are petite you are typically less than 5 foot 3 inches. There are several ways that you can dress to make yourself appear taller. Go for slim fitting tops, shirts and dresses with a V-neckline, vertical prints or pleating which will help to elongate your frame. Showing off your legs in a short skirt or dress, no longer than where the hemline ends above the knee, will also contribute to making you appear taller. Similarly, highwaisted skirts and trousers are beneficial in elongating your legs. For a formal or Every Model Magazine

evening event, go for a gown with an asymmetrical hemline or a slit. Avoid wearing full skirts and floor length gowns which can overwhelm a smaller frame. A pair of high heels will also help to elongate your legs whether you`re wearing a skirt, dress or trousers. A good trick to appear taller is wearing boot-cut trousers or jeans that are longer than your legs and wearing heels underneath which are concealed under the wide hems. When wearing a short skirt or dress, go for strapless heels that are similar to your skin colour, as opposed to colourful or printed high heel shoes with ankle straps, as this will give your legs the appearance of continuity. For the same reason, when wearing long trousers go for heels that are similar in colour to your trousers. Wearing strapless, skin colour heels when showing off your legs or heels similar in colour to your trousers not only flatters petite women and ladies with long torsos or shorter legs but all women who wish to make their legs look longer. If you are a model this is a great technique to use to elongate your legs and appear taller. At casting you should wear shoes similar in colour to your trousers, or similar in colour to 40

your skin tone if you will be showing off your body in a bikini or underwear. Moreover, this is an effective technique to employ when making new polaroids or introduction and runway videos with your agency. If you`ve been playing it safe all year round now is the time to get out of your comfort zone. Winter may be filled with cold and dark days, however it’s also the best time of year to be stylish so don’t let the postChristmas blues get to you. You can experiment with darker and festive make- up colours such as with dark lipsticks and shimmery eye shadow. You can also create chic looks by wearing boots, faux fur, printed scarves, leather gloves and accessorising with gothic and romantic styled jewellery, as opposed to hot summer days where clothing is minimal, and if you`ve put on a bit of weight during the year or the Christmas holidays you can hide it a lot more easily with elegant clothes. Remember to choose an outfit that flatters your figure and get creative! If you have any questions or would like to speak further feel free to contact me via my Instagram or personal Facebook:
