Tuscarora, Nevada: Once Home to the 2nd Largest Chinatown in the West
THE MUSEUM IS OPEN TUESDAY - SATURDAY FROM 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM AND ON SUNDAYS FROM 1:00 - 5:00 PM.
Shortly after gold was discovered in California, the news reached China. Gold seekers rushed to the west coast and many spilled over into what is now Elko County. Tuscarora, with an abundance of silver ore, became the destination for many Chinese immigrants. By 1871, Tuscarora was the biggest town in Elko County, the largest Chinatown in Nevada, the second largest Chinatown east of San Francisco, and one of the largest Chinese settlements in the USA. During Tuscarora’s most productive years, from 1870 to 1890, its mines produced $40,000,000 in silver. The town’s population was about four thousand people, split almost equally between whites and Chinese. In 1859, many Chinese immigrants moved to Tuscarora and, although prohibited from working in the mines at that time, were hired for a variety of jobs including building irrigation ditches for farming, restaurant cooks and workers, boarding house employees, and working in laundries. In 1863, plans begun for the building of the first transcontinental railroad in the American West. Hundreds of Chinese workers were hired; thousands of men worked

on the railroad and 90% were Chinese. They leveled roads, built roadbeds, cut down streets, built trestles and bridges, and dynamited mountains to create tunnels. Not only did the Chinese-Tuscarorans contribute heavily to the railroad, but their now large population began to operate opium dens, brothels and gambling houses. One of the classic legends of Tuscarora’s old Chinatown is about a miner who lost his gold in an Oriental gambling house and was determined to get it back. He filled a paper bag with pepper and sulfur, climbed onto the roof of the casino one cold night when the fire in the stove was blazing, and dropped the bag down the flue. A coughing pandemonium quickly broke out in the gambling house and everyone flew out the front door. While the gamblers attempted to breathe outside, the man broke into the rear door, holding his breath, and scooped up several thousand dollars in gold from the tables. Ironically, within a few days the covetous gambler lost all of the stolen gold back to the undefeatable Chinese gamblers.

In 1869, when the Central Pacific Railroad was completed, the Chinese laborers were left without jobs. Many went to Tuscarora’s old town to lease and work placer claims abandoned by white men for richer diggings. More industrious than the previous owners, they built access roads and dug water ditches. The Chinese became more efficient than the whites in placer mining primarily because they were willing to work harder and longer. By 1871, about eight hundred Chinese were working claims near Tuscarora. The mining camp soon claimed to have the second largest Chinatown in the west. Boom conditions drew more whites, however, and, by 1876, the Chinese had become a barely tolerated minority and were restricted to ghetto living conditions, relegated to being servants, cooks, launderers, woodchoppers, gamblers and teamsters. The Chinese, as did the whites, left Tuscarora when the ore gave out.

FREEZING A BETTER ICE CUBE Discussing how to freeze water seems to be a ridiculous notion. On its face. After all, who doesn’t know how to make an ice cube? However, there are ice cubes, and then there are ice cubes! Most ice cubes made from tap water become cloudy when frozen. This results from impurities in the water, and small gas bubbles captured in the ice. Here are our tips for freezing a better ice cube, one that is clearer in character.
1. Use distilled water. A product free from impurities. 2. Boil the water to force any gases to escape. 3. F reeze the water slowly. Longer freezing times allow more gases to escape. Insulate newly filled ice cube trays in larger containers and wrap a towel around it all to slow down the freezing process.

RASPBERRY LIME RICKEY
ORANGE SPARKLER
Sweet-tart raspberries are paired with fresh lime, and enjoyed in a glass generously filled with ice topped with sparkling water.
Remember orange creamsicles? Those wonderful frozen pops that had vanilla ice cream on a stick encased in a sweet orange shell? This drink recreates those flavors with fresh ingredients.
INGREDIENTS Makes 4, 16 oz drinks 12 oz Red Raspberries ( 1 C Fresh Pureed) 12 T Simple Syrup 1 C Fresh Lime Juice 1 Quart Seltzer Water 4 Key Limes & Ice DIRECTIONS Puree the fresh raspberries and strain into a large pitcher. Add the simple syrup, freshly squeezed lime juice, and stir. Pour the concentrated mixture into 4 glasses filled with ice. Top off each glass with seltzer water until full. With a long teaspoon, stir each glass gently. Squeeze two halves of a key lime into each glass. ADULT VERSION: Turn this drink into an adult beverage by adding Gin for Gin Rickey. Gin Rickey’s were served in the Great Gatsby where it was described, “We drink long, greedy swallows.”
INGREDIENTS Makes 4, 8 oz drinks 4 Oranges, juiced (about 2 cups) 2 Cups Seltzer water 1 Cup (or more) Vanilla Ice Cream DIRECTIONS Juice the oranges. Chill (or start with chilled oranges). Divide the juice equally into 4 soda fountain glasses. Add a ½ cup of seltzer water to each glass or enough to fill the glass ¾ full. Add a dollop of your best vanilla ice cream. Serve with straws and a spoon. ADULT VERSION: An orange sparkler becomes a little more special when a mimosa twist is added. Substitute champagne or a sparkling wine for the club soda.
SIMPLE SYRUP Key to many cool beverages is the sweetener must mixology references use “Simple Syrup” for Sweetening drinks. Simple Syrup is a mixture of granulated sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio. To dissolve the sugar and place it in suspension, heat the mixture gently until the sugar is completely dissolved. You’ll see the mixture change from cloudy to clear as the process completes. Cool and place the syrup in a bottle. We refrigerate our simple syrup, though others choose not to For maximum freshness, makes small batches that will be used in a reasonable amount of time. Occasionally a recipe may call for “rich simple syrup,” which has a 2:1 ratio of sugar to water. AUGUST 2015 | EVERYTHINGELKO.COM

PINA COLADA SLUSHIE
GREEN GOODNESS JUICE
The tropical regions know a little something about staying cool in heat. Local fruits mixed with ice provide cool comfort during afternoon heat. A Pina Colada is but one tropical favorite. Our version crushes ice along with the fruits transforming them into a refreshing slushie.
Juicing fruits and vegetables makes the most of fresh harvests. For many, juicing provides an easy way to incorporate more healthy nutrients into their diets. This green version uses only grapes and apples for a natural answer to sweetening.
INGREDIENTS Makes 6, 12 oz drinks 1 Pineapple (about 3 cups diced) 1 Can (15 oz) Cream of Coconut 2 Cups Ice Cubes (small-sized) DIRECTIONS Prepare the fresh pineapple by removing the top, bottom and outer skin. Cut the pineapple in quarters lengthwise. Cut away the tough inner core. Dice the remaining pineapple flesh. Place the pineapple, cream of coconut, and ice in a blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately. ADULT VERSION: Pina Coladas are best known as rum-based cocktails. It makes sense, pineapples, coconuts and rum are all local ingredients in the Caribbean regions. In fact, the pina colada is the official beverage of Puerto Rico. Add light or dark rum to this mixture for a cocktail version.
22
INGREDIENTS Makes 4, 8 oz drinks 1 Green Apple, Peeled, Cored, Diced 1 Cucumber, Peeled, Seeded, Diced 1 Cup Green Grapes 2 Stalks Celery, diced 2 Cups Packed Spinach Leaves Juice of one lemon Pinch of salt ½ Cup water DIRECTIONS Prepare the fruits and vegetables as noted. Place all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until smooth. Chill. ADULT VERSION: Move over Bloody Mary! The above combination of fruits and vegetables becomes a “Green Greta” when vodka is added. Not a bad “Hair of the dog” or brunch choice. Add melon liqueur for a sweeter cocktail.
SODASTREAM MACHINES
VITAMIX
Flavor your sparkling waters with SodaStream flavor syrups or your own mixtures. Sleek modern designs are featured with the SodaStream series of soda makers. Turn plain water into sparkling water in minutes with these machines that feature a CO2cartridge. No electricity needed. Special water bottle is designed to withstand the pressure of infusing the gas. The colder the water, the more fizz it accepts.
Vitamix machines are powerful kitchen tools with some serious power. They are several machines in one – a heavy-duty blender, a food processor, a grinder, and even a frozen drink maker.

BLACKBERRY SHRUB It’s a surprisingly delicious and refreshing taste. Shrubs are currently enjoying a renaissance. But what is a shrub? It’s a beverage that derives its flavor from fruity vinegar. Stemming from colonial times, sweetened, muddled fruits are fermented into vinegar, then used when mixing beverages. The term “drinking vinegars” is also used when talking about shrubs. Our version is really a pseudo-shrub. We’ve used a ready-made fruit vinegar in our concoction. It’s a different type of refreshment! INGREDIENTS Makes 4, 8 oz drinks ½ Cup Blackberries, divided 3-4 T Raspberry Balsamic Vinegar 8 T Simple Syrup 4 Cups Seltzer Water Mine for Muddling and Garnishing
DIRECTIONS Mash or puree half of the blackberries and strain. Mix 4 teaspoons of the blackberry puree with the vinegar and simple syrup, and stir. Add several sprigs of mint to each glass and muddle (crushing and bruising the leaves). Divide the concentrate into 4 glasses – about 3-4 T per glass. Fill the glasses with ice, and add seltzer water to fill. Stir each glass gently. Add the remaining whole blackberries and more mint sprigs as garnishes. ADULT VERSION: To turn this Blackberry Shrub into a cocktail, add vodka, gin, or rum. If you prefer a slightly sweeter cocktail, add a flavored liqueur such as Framboise to the glass.
JUICING MACHINES The “slow” is slow juicer means that it operates at lower revolutions per minute while extracting more juice faster than traditional juicers. The machines stays cool while optimizing the juice’s flavor and nutritional value. The Hurom Slow Juicer extracts more juice than most machines. It works like a mortar and pestle with masticating plates that crush, then press out the juices. It operates quietly while producing the maximum amount of juice from your fruits and vegetables. No sharp blades; built-in safety mechanisms.

EACH CORK FEATURES ONE OF THE 19 CRIMES PUNISHABLE BY TRANSPORTATION! Collect them all!!!! (It’s not a crime ;)
19 CRIMES
19 CRIMES CABERNET SAUVIGNON AND RED BLEND Dear Mr. President, The problem with overrun jails and detention facilities is not a dilemma that you are the first to wrangle. As it turns out, during the 18th century in England, bad boys (and maybe ladies) were alive and well and crowding the local institutions. In an effort to alleviate pressure at the seams, British lawmakers compiled a list of 19 crimes punishable by “transportation” rather than death. This meant that, should you be convicted of one of these crimes, you would face the consequence of boarding a rickety boat and setting sail to the English penal colony, today known as Australia. No kidding! Today we pay respect to England and their clever way of handling the overcrowding issue by raising a glass and toasting the leaders that said “enough is enough bad guys, there’s no room for you here and there’s no room for you on our streets! Happy Sailing!” (It may not have been exactly like that ;)

GREAT BASIN National Park
Looking for something different to do? Want to escape the heat of August? Consider visiting Great Basin National Park, an easy drive of 250 miles from Elko. Showcased by the 13,063 foot Wheeler Peak, the beautiful Lehman Caves, and 5,000 year old bristlecone pine trees there is something for everyone to enjoy. Start your trip by driving the 12 mile Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. The entire route is paved and allows you to gain 4,000 feet in elevation. As you drive the narrow, winding mountain road you will go through several ecological zones: at 7,000 feet the vegetation is dominated by sagebrush; 8,000 feet takes you to the pinyon juniper woodland zone; 8,500 feet brings you to the mountain mahogany; 9,000 is in forest of mixed conifers including white fir, Douglas fir and Ponderosa Pine; at mile 11 you reach 10,000 feet and the aspen forests. Be sure to stop at some of the scenic pullouts for photo opportunities.
The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive provides access to several hiking trails including the Osceola Ditch, the alpine lakes loop trail, and the bristlecone pine interpretive trail. The wheelchair accessible Sky Islands Forest trail begins at the Bristlecone parking lot located at the end of the drive. There are many other hiking trails located throughout the park. Guided tours are available daily into the Lehman Caves which were first protected as a National Monument in 1922, then in 1986 they were combined with the newly established National Park. Approximately 550 million years ago the Lehman Cave system began forming while it was still submerged in a warm, shallow ocean. The caves are decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, popcorn, and over 300 rare shield formations. If you time your trip for moonless nights you can take advantage of some of the darkest

night skies in the United States. There is minimal light pollution and when combined with low humidity and high elevation on clear nights you can observe thousands of stars. Astronomy programs are offered on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays through Labor Day. The park will have a Perseids Meteor Shower Watch Party on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 and an Astronomy Festival September 10-12, 2015.
Great Basin National Park has five developed campgrounds with vault toilets, picnic tables, tent pads and campfire grills. There are no hookups or leveled parking sites. Those wanting full hookups can stay at Whispering Elms Motel, Campground and RV Park in the town of Baker. For further information about the park visit: www.nps.gov/grba.

PET ADVICE COLUMN
Tis the Season for Parvo
Pet Personals
CONTRIBUTED BY KATRINA CUMMING, L.V.T.
It’s August and you’ve had your eye on a sweet little puppy since the day it was born in May. Now that sweet little thing is 8 weeks old and ready to go to its forever home. You’ve been planning all sorts of activities for you and your new found friend. Walks down by the river, afternoon picnics in the park, and trips to the pet store for, treats, toys, and accessories. Your Facebook and Instagram will be full of selfies of you and your puppy, and all of your friends will be over to visit and hold the new baby. A few weeks have gone by and your puppy is now 11 weeks old. You’ve been so busy enjoying your new puppy that you forgot to get them vaccinated and now they’re sick. Your puppy just isn’t acting themselves and not eating much of anything, and when it does eat, it’s vomiting it all back up. You immediately call your local veterinarian and tell them what is happening with your puppy and they suspect your puppy has Parvo and advise you to bring them in for testing and treatment right away. Parvovirus is a virus that infects the intestinal cells, bone marrow cells, and cells of the lymph system. Once the virus enters the body it seeks out the nearest rapidly dividing group of cells in the body. A couple of days after the virus has entered the body, so much virus has developed that it has been released into the blood stream and then seeks new organs to attack that contain other groups of cells such as the intestinal cells. When a puppy is born they are not able to make their own antibodies against infections. When a puppy drinks their mother’s milk they are ingesting colostrum which contains all of the antibodies that their mother is circulating through her own body. These antibodies are protective until they wear off in the first four months of a puppy’s life. Once these antibodies wear off, the puppy no longer has enough antibodies to protect them. If they are exposed to a large number of viral particles, they can become infected. Since parvovirus is not enveloped in fat the way most viruses are, it is especially hardy in the environment and often difficult to remove. This means that the virus is everywhere: on carpet, in your yard, in the park, etc. The virus is shed through the dog’s stool and only takes a small amount of infected stool to infect a non-immune dog. Some dogs can become infected and carry the virus for up to 7 days before showing any signs of illness. Puppies should be restricted from public outdoor areas until their vaccination series is complete around the age of 16 weeks. Any dog under the age of 2 that is unvaccinated can get the parvovirus. Once they begin to show signs of illness such as, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and not eating or drinking, you should seek immediate treatment for your puppy. Treatment is concentrated around supportive care. When the puppy is admitted to the hospital for treatment you should be prepared for a 5-7 day hospital stay and a rather high invoice. Since the parvovirus is such a toxic disease, intensive care is needed in order to rid the infection. There are a few “must haves” when it comes to treatment:

Veterinary Clinic
1. Fluid therapy to prevent dehydration from vast fluid loss (vomiting & diarrhea) 2. Antibiotics to kill the bacteria in the intestinal and GI tract 3. Nausea control for patient comfort 4. Blood Work to check blood cell count and protein levels 5. Up to a week of hospitalization Once your puppy is able to eat without any vomiting and diarrhea and seems to have a higher energy level, we can send them home. Your puppy can still shed the virus for up to 14 days after treatment, so you still should keep them confined to your home to prevent further contamination to other puppies. At this time, your puppy can begin their Distemper Parvo Vaccination series. Your puppy will need their vaccine every 3 weeks until they have received 4 vaccines total.
Elko Veterinary Clinic has treated 26 parvovirus cases since January 1, 2015. And 13 of those cases were admitted for treatment just from May 1 to July 15. The parvovirus is extremely prevalent in the Elko, Carlin, & Battle Mountain areas and we highly encourage vaccinating your puppies against the parvovirus. For more education on the virus you can visit our website at ElkoVet.com or give us a call at the clinic. We’d be happy to answer any questions you have. Exercise: A Mood Changer Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic
Kick up the cardio and boost your mood! Ask a daily runner why she runs and you’re likely to hear, “It makes me feel good.” Those of us who aren’t fond of exercise of any type might find this really hard to understand. How can something that makes you sweat and pant actually make you feel good?
Can Exercise Affect Your Mood? Simple answer – absolutely!

Let’s go back to our running example – some might say they run when they feel stressed out. Others might say they run after an argument with a spouse. Why do they say this? Because they feel different after a run. They may feel stronger, calmer or happier; many runners report that they experience a “runner’s high” that helps them to push past physical pain and limitations. It’s a known fact that exercise releases certain chemicals in the brain, including endorphins and dopamine, which affect mood. Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers – in fact endorphins are more powerful than morphine. They help an athlete to stay in the game and push past their pain after an injury.
The Benefits of Frequent Exercise Some scientists claim that endorphins improve immune system function and lower blood pressure. They also have anti-aging effects because they attack superoxides, molecules that threaten living tissue and are responsible for illness and aging. They can also reduce anxiety
and feelings of depression and raise selfesteem. Frequent exercise has a direct effect on endorphin release – the more you exercise, the more endorphins you produce each time you exercise! Exercise also raises dopamine levels in the brain. Low dopamine levels cause you to feel mentally foggy and sluggish. Dopamine levels increase in response to a low or moderate amount of exercise. Dopamine can also help you to get a good night’s sleep unless you engage in too strenuous a workout, then it has the opposite effect of causing sleeplessness.
Add Chiropractic Care for Optimal Wellness So aside from the major health benefits of exercise, including weight control and cardiovascular health, exercise also helps to boost your mood, increase pleasure and minimize pain. And when you add regular chiropractic care, adequate sleep and a healthy diet – you have all the makings of a lifestyle that supports optimal wellness and wellbeing!

Watermelon Rice Krispies 1. Make the inner red section first. Add red food coloring after melting butter and marshmallows, and before adding rice krispies. 2. Use a small round cake pan to form the red center and then place in a larger cake pan upside down. While it’s cooling, make the green rind. 3. Pull the small cake pan out leaving the red in the center and press the green around the edges. Place chocolate chunks on top (best to do this while the red is still warm so they adhere). 4. Let cool completely and then slice into wedges and bring to your next picnic!

BECOME A
FOSTER PARENT
Abused and neglected children who are removed from their families often need to live outside of their communities, away from everything familiar. In Nevada’s rural communities, many children, including teens and sibling groups, are in need of a safe and nurturing home. Foster parents provide a temporary home so these children can heal and feel supported. Foster parents can be single or married, male or female. They can be working, or a stay-at-home parent. They can also be retired with grown children. There are many types of care that may be more suitable for your home situation: • Emergency shelter care
• Short term and long term care
• Respite care
• Adoption
To learn more on how you can become a licensed foster parent with the State of Nevada, please call 1-888-423-2659, or go to www.dcfs.state.nv.us.

SHABONYA DUTTON’S GOOD NEIGHBOR FOR AUGUST 2015

Jackie said “She is disabled, blind in one eye. She has dialysis every other day but when she doesn’t have to go (to dialysis) she goes to Southside to volunteer and teach the children. The Teachers and kids love her. She makes the kids’ books. They call her Mrs. Grace. I admire her for finding the strength to help others.” Graciela has lived in Elko all her life and has a son that is 8 years old. I’d like to start with how unique of an individual Graciela truly is…she lost her left eye due to her retina detaching when her son was born and has been on dialysis for the past 5 years. If you’ve experienced the direct effects dialysis can have on those being treated it’s remarkable that Graciela accomplishes what she does daily. Not only can dialysis be painful but it causes patience to experience side effect such as fatigue, muscle cramps, nausea and many others; all of that and then you add the mental portion of it. That, the mental portion…that’s the part I found most interesting about Graciela. You don’t know what strong is until you have to be it. “I went from 20/20 vision to losing sight in one eye it was quite the change.” “There are days that I get down, but I have to overcome that for my son. I have to be positive.”

Graciela by no means wastes her free time. When she isn’t doing dialysis she spends her time volunteering at Southside Elementary working with the kids in the ALS program translating and assisting the teachers. Graciela said she realized the need for volunteers while helping with her sons Kindergarten class. Graciela was also an ALS student so it’s easy for her to relate to the kids and recalled how intimidating it could be when you don’t understand. Graciela has received a volunteer award two years in a row for going above and beyond. “People don’t realize it but these teachers can’t just leave the classroom to go do things.” Not only does Graciela excel at her role volunteering but she has handled the environment with absolute poise; “Kids would ask about my eye and I would tell them that I had a magic eye and Santa had to take it so he could see if they were good or bad. As they got older I would tell them the truth.” Aside from being a total super mom, it’s apparent how wise, caring and considerate Graciela is when it comes to those around her. I asked Graciela what she would want to share with others if she could, she said;
The beginning of a “savingful” relationship.

“Don’t judge a book by its cover. “Hi” goes a long way, and always treat others the way YOU want to be treated.” That statement resonated with me in a powerful way. I feel as though we tend to lose sight of such simple lessons.
dialysis. Have a great day.” I’m just glad my son couldn’t understand. He kept asking me if she was my friend or if I knew her“
Graciela told me a story about a trip to grab dinner that astounded me.
Graciela’s testament throughout the interview was simple and clear; be kind to others, don’t be quick to judge because you don’t know every persons story, and don’t waste a single day.
“I was getting pizza one day and the lady next to me was looking at my needle marks and then I hear her say, “You should be ashamed of yourself, that’s hurtful!” I looked around because in my head I know she isn’t talking to me. I finally put it together and just told her “I’m actually going through
Graciela, you are a wonderful role model to not only the children you work with but to all of those around you. You are strong and selfless and live by your word.
YOU ARE A GOOD NEIGHBOR AND SO MUCH MORE, THANK YOU.
