Donations will be used to provide emergency services to the poor, including emergency food assistance, clothing, soup kitchen, showers, laundry, emergency homeless shelter (Samaritan House), stranded travelers’ aid, and employment assistance.

Under the new pledge program, individuals and families are being asked to make a $50.00 per year pledge, or a $100.00 per year pledge for businesses to join the “One Hand Helping Another” campaign to support the services F.I.S.H. provides.

F.I.S.H. was organized by local civic and religious leaders in 1989 to provide emergency services to the community when Elko County announced that all assistance to indigents would be terminated, with the exception of medical needs. This meant that impoverished persons in need of assistance within Elko County would have to rely

upon private charity. The services that F.I.S.H. provides have largely been funded by private donations, thrift store sales and some government grants.

Executive Director, Sherry Smith, Executive Director of F.I.S.H. reports that funding has always been tight, but this year with reductions in grant monies, slower thrift store sales, and increased level of service, F.I.S.H. is in desperate need of private donations to continue the level of services.

For those wishing to help in a bigger way, F.I.S.H. released a list of present needs that need funding, including:

$3,000 pledge to keep delivery trucks for the Food Bank and Thrift

Store running to transport goods.

$5,000 one-time pledge to re-roof the Samaritan House Emergency Shelter.

$5,000 one-time pledge to create a new driveway and realign the fencing to receive clothing and furniture donations at F.I.S.H.

“Friends in Service Helping programs strengthen our community in Elko County,” said Smith. “We do this by building relationships that empower people, encourages community service, and restore faith in our humanity and power to help lift one another.”

“By donating it will help provide a person or family in need with access to life changing essentials such as nutritious food, a place to shower or do laundry, a warm and safe place to go when times are in crisis.

Your donation will help the families, the women, the men, the children in Elko County that need a hand up on their journey back to self-sufficiency,” explained Smith.

F.I.S.H. will accept any donation, be it monthly, quarterly, annually or a one-time donation. All donations are tax deductible. In addition, the donation can be to a specific need or project at F.I.S.H. by specifying that on your donation.

Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in the Great Basin features photographs by Paula Morin depicting an uncommon view of the significance of the wild horse to this region. Mustangs conjure up an image of mythical proportions. Not only are they a reminder of our nation’s heritage, their role in the evolution and history of the American West is profound. There are 21 giclee prints produced from Morin’s original handpainted black and white photographs. The traveling exhibit debuted July 28 in the Barrick Gallery at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko and is slated to run through September 26.

The original photographs and narratives were made in 1999-2001, during which time Paula Morin photographed wild horse herds in their natural surroundings and recorded her discussions with people whose lives were most intimately connected to them. A synergy of image and word portrays the intricate relationship of wild horses to the culture and landscape of the Great Basin—from yesteryear to the present. Morin has also written a companion book to the exhibit that is available in the Museum Store: Honest Horses: Wild Horses in the Great Basin (2006), published by the University of Nevada Press.

Curated by Paula Morin and organized by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC), Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in the Great Basin is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative-Traveling Exhibition Program. It was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Nevada State Legislature.

The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

But the stars are aligned for renewed energies applied to packing your lunch. Yes, it’s the back to school time of year, but packing a great lunch is not just for kids anymore! Packing your lunch saves money, shifts nutrition for the better, and, in the end, saves time. A great lunch is the perfect respite in the middle of a busy day and offers that necessary refueling for the afternoon ahead. In this issue, we’ll offer a slew of tips for a better lunch and how to make it easy. We complete our Knives 101 discussion with Part 2. A review and three recipes from Tom Colicchio’s new book, ‘wichcraft brings fresh inspiration to sandwich-making and, therefore, lunch-making!

Save Time - Fast food really isn’t all that fast! By the time you drive or walk to the restaurant, wait in line, wait for your order and drive back, at least 10-15 minutes have passed. A great lunch can be packed at home in less than 10 minutes!

Use Less Packaging - Packing a lunch in reusable containers avoids fast food packaging and all of the waste that accompanies one quick meal.

Fight Boredom with Creativity and Variety - Lunch can be so much more than a peanut butter sandwich and a side of carrot and celery sticks!

• Incorporate more fruits and veggies in your lunch with grape tomatoes, cucumber sticks, berries, grapes, broccoli “trees,” or whatever’s in season.

• Avoid packing processed foods they’re generally more expensive, have questionable ingredients, are packaging intense, and often nutritionally suspect with high sodium and preservatives.

• Have a quick Plan B for those hurried mornings! A Plan B might include freezing several sandwiches ahead of time, or individual portions of previous suppers.

• What to drink? Skip sugary drinks. Pack a lime or lemon slice to dress up tap water.

Perhaps some herbal tea - hot or cold. You could even rediscover milk at lunch - we’re told we all need more calcium and Vitamin D. • Watching your calories? Packing your own lunch is a great start. Bring an open-faced sandwich and you’ve sliced the bread calories in half. Or, use a lettuce leaf for a sandwich wrapper.

• Explore bean spreads (hummus, refried beans), tapenades, guacamole, or cream cheese spreads with your own diced vegetable and fruit “mix-ins.”

• A layer of wilted greens sautéed in garlic is an easy solution for injecting leafy green vegetables into your sandwich.

• Make lunch kebabs of meat and cheese, veggies and fruits. You could even make some antipasto on a stick!

• Make your own trail mix - GORP - ‘Good Ole’ Raisins and Peanuts’ - or any combination of dried fruits, nuts, crunch, and sparkle (M & M’s?).

• Investigate some hearty salads - bean salads, meat salads, pasta salads, veggies with pesto.

• Apportion tomorrow’s lunch before serving tonight’s supper. You’ll avert the risk of there being no leftovers available after the meal.

• Change the types of bread used in sandwiches - rye, pumpernickel, oatmeal, baguette, sesame - there are scores of bread choices. Similarly, vary your choice of cheeses and meats.

• Enjoy packing a good sliced bread sandwich, but don’t forget about wraps, pita bread, bagels, rice cakes, crackers, English muffins, or croissants as sandwich foundations.

• Dress up leftover rice or pasta with nuts, herbs and a simple dressing of olive oil and a flavored vinegar. Add a few leftover vegetables, and it’s a complete meal.

• Make that apple more enticing - slices (drizzled with a little lemon juice to prevent browning) might be easier to handle at

lunchtime. Include vanilla yogurt for a quick dip, or a nut butter for smearing on the fruit.

Make it Easy You’re much more likely to establish a habit of packing lunch if you have a plan and the right set-up for food on the go! Set yourself up with appropriate lunch tools.

Thermoses - To keep hot foods hot, and cold foods cold, use a thermos.

This isn’t just a matter of having a pleasant food experience, it promotes food safety by keeping foods out of the temperature range that promotes bacterial growth. Beverage thermoses are typically tall and narrow, and often double as drinking mugs. Many styles with stainless steel, doublewalled construction are available. Previously, thermoses relied on glass inserts which had the nasty habit of breaking.

Wide-Mouthed Thermoses - Shaped differently, constructed similarly to other thermoses, these units are perfect for soups, stews, or your favorite chili.

The New Brown Bag - How do you carry your lunch? The brown paper sacks of our youth are largely gone. Today, it’s about insulation! Small coolers, insulated nylon bags, reusable canvas bags are all perfect for toting lunch, and keep food appealing and safe.

create your own with frozen water in zippered plastic bags. Freezing your sandwich or your lunch’s drink provides an additional source of coolness for your lunch pack.

Food Containers - Lunch can be one of the most intensive meals for generating waste. In the fast food world, Styrofoam® clamshells, cardboard packaging, drink containers and individual packaging of all types easily generates a mountain of trash. A modest investment in great food containers not only saves on trash, but creates a pleasant meal

Silverware - Pack the real stuff! It’s environfriendly and so much nicer to dine with than flimsy plastic versions that break when spearing a cherry tomato. If you’re cramped for space in your lunch pack, a “spork” might be your answer!

Tip #1: Freeze a loaf of sliced bread, then assemble several nut butter sandwiches at once. The nut butter spreads easily on the frozen slices. Smear the nut butter on both slices of bread placing any jelly in the middle to prevent any late morning sogginess.

Package and refreeze extra sandwiches for quick retrieval on a hurried morning.

Tip #4: Condiments transform plain into delicious. There are some great mustards that will shift the taste of your sandwich in some delightful ways. Experiment with different sauces, spreads, confits, and relishes.

Tip #2: Breakfast is often on the go as much as lunch is! The same hints for lunch success apply to breakfast as well. One batch of homemade muffins thrown in the freezer trumps any number of fast food breakfast choices.

Tip #3: Salads are a great lunch solution.

Assemble the salad, but do not apply the salad dressing - it will wilt the greens and cause some vegetables to lose their crispness.

Transport the salad dressing in a separate container with a great seal to prevent leaking.

Small glass jars (baby food jars, caper jars) with screw-on lids work well while also repurposing an existing container.

Tip #5: Reconsider your yogurt choices. Read the label on the yogurt - many have a high caloric and high sugar value. While foil lids have greatly reduced yogurt packaging waste, individual portions are still packaging intensive.

Better yet, buy larger containers and pack a daily portion for your lunch with fresh fruit mixed in. Cube blocks of cheese instead of high-priced, individually-wrapped cheesesticks.

Tip #6: Mornings are hectic - pack lunch the night before. Freeze individual portions of previous meals ahead of time and have them ready to pull from the freezer.

Preheat a sandwich press according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Place 2 slices of cheese on each of 4 slices of bread. Follow with a generous amount of onions and the other 2 slices of cheese. Close the sandwiches and place in the sandwich press (no need to butter the press or the bread). Close the lid and apply slight pressure. Cook without disturbing for 5-8 minutes. Open the press and check for color and temperature; the cheese should be melted and the bread golden. If the bread is sticking to the press, allow it to cook for a bit longer and it will unstick itself.

Roasted Onions 4 T extra-virgin olive oil 4 medium yellow onions, sliced 2 T chopped fresh oregano salt and pepper In a skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and onions and stir vigorously to avoid scorching. Ingredients

• chocolate chips

• old fashioned oats

• vanilla extract

• freshly ground flax seed

• toasted coconut • peanut butter

• honey (or agave nectar) • chia seeds (optional)

Preparation Once the mixture is combined, pop it in the fridge for 10-20 minutes so that it will harden slightly. This will help make it easier to roll it into balls. Then once the mixture has cooled slightly, shape it however you please!

Different (or no) chocolate: you can also substitute in any other kinds of chips (butterscotch, milk chocolate, white chocolate, cinnamon chips, etc.). Or if you are vegan, I recommend cacao nibs. Or if you don’t dig chocolate, you can leave this part out all together.

Different nut butter: If you are allergic to peanuts, feel free to substitute in any other kinds of nut butter, like almond butter, sunflower seed butter, cashew butter, or others.

Different sweetener: I really prefer honey in this recipe. But agave also works and is vegan, and some readers have had success with alternative sweeteners too.

Ingredients: ENCHILADA SAUCE: • 1 T grapeseed oil • 1/2 large white onion, diced • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 (15-oz) can tomato sauce • 1 chipotle pepper in adobo (canned), chopped, plus 1 t adobo sauce • 1/2 cup water or vegetable broth • 1 T maple syrup, • sea salt and black pepper, to taste

KALE SALAD: • 6-7 cups chopped fresh kale leaves • 1 T Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 6-8 slices cooked bacon, chopped • 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese • 1/2 cup dried cranberries • 1/2 cup toasted chopped pecans • 1 batch Red Wine Shallot Vinaigrette

RED WINE SHALLOT VINAIGRETTE:

• 1/4 cup Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2 T red wine vinegar • 1-2 t honey, to taste • 1 t Dijon mustard

• pinch of salt & fresh ground black pepper

• 1 small shallot, peeled and finely-

chopped

Preparation 1. Toss all ingredients together until combined.

2. S erve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 8 hours before serving.

VINAIGRETTE Whisk the olive oil, red wine vinegar, honey, mustard, salt and pepper together in a mixing bowl until completely combined. (Or you can toss everything in a mason jar and give it a good shake.) Stir in the shallot until combined. Taste, and season with extra salt and/or pepper and/ or honey, if needed.

Ingredients: ENCHILADA FILLING: • 1 T grapeseed oil • 1/2 large white onion, diced • 1 poblano pepper, seeds removed, diced • sea salt and black pepper, to taste • 1 (15-oz) can vegetarian refried beans • 8 white or yellow corn tortillas • optional toppings: lime juice, diced red onion, sliced avocado, chopped fresh cilantro

Preparation TO MAKE THE ENCHILADA SAUCE: 1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the oil, onion, and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until soft and translucent, 4-5 min.

2. Add the tomato sauce, chipotle pepper, adobo sauce, maple syrup, and water. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 min, covered.

3. Transfer the sauce to a blender and blend well. Adjust the seasonings as needed. Set aside.

TO MAKE THE ENCHILADA FILLING: 1. Rinse the skillet and place over medium heat to prepare the filling. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. Once the skillet is hot, add the oil, onion and poblano pepper. Season with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Cook until the onion is translucent and the pepper has a bit of color, about 3-4 min. Add the refried beans and stir/mash to combine. Add 1/3 cup of the enchilada sauce for extra flavor. Adjust the seasonings as needed. Remove from the heat and set aside.

3. Wrap the tortillas in a damp paper or cloth towel and microwave to warm for 30 sec.

4. Pour a bit of sauce into the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Spread to coat. Fill tortillas with a modest amount of filling then roll up the tortilla. Place the seam-side down at one end of the dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the top of the enchiladas in a stripe down the middle.

5. Bake at 350°F for 15-20 min, or until warmed through.

Top with desired toppings and serve.

•2 handfuls fresh baby spinach •1 cup frozen pineapple chunks •1 /2 cup coconut water •1 /2 cup almond milk (or plain Greek yogurt**) •1 T chia seeds • 1 banana, peeled and sliced

Preparation 1. Add all ingredients to a blender. Pulse until smooth.

2. Serve immediately, sprinkled with extra chia seeds on top, if desired.

(If the smoothie is too thick, you can add in more coconut water to thin it out.

If the summer heat is getting you down, go up into the mountains not only to beat the heat but to enjoy a spectacular wildflower display.

The Ruby Mountains and the East Humboldt range have the richest subalpine and alpine flora in the Great Basin.

Subalpine is defined as being situated on the higher slopes of mountains just below the timberline. Here the trees thin out compared to the montane forest found in lower elevations. The best way to tell if you are in the subalpine is by the plants. Aspen trees from the montane forests disappear and you get scattered large pine trees.

The terrain becomes very rocky and steep. Trees at the upper limits of the subalpine zone often become krummholz, stunted and twisted with much of the growth being horizontal due to the frequent high winds. Snow cover protects some of these trees during the winter, but branches above the snow cover are usually destroyed by blowing ice crystals. A good location to see krummholz trees is along the trail going

over Liberty Pass. Alpine tundra does not contain trees because it is at altitudes where it is too cold and windy to support their growth. A good place to see this type of vegetation is above Island Lake or at Liberty Pass.

Wildflowers in these zones must survive through very cold, windy, snow packed winters and they need to grow quickly in the short summers. Most plants in these zones are low to the ground to help them stay out of the wind. In the extreme alpine zone plants are frequently only 1 to 2 inches tall. Artic willow, the diminutive Watson’s Daisy and King’s Buckwheat are some examples of short statured plants. Alpine Shooting Star can vary in height depending on the elevation and habitat. Many high elevation plants grow in a cushion or thick mat which allows the

wind to fly smoothly over the plant. The thick mats formed by plants such as Moss Pink also absorb and retain heat. Plants like Weak-stemmed Stonecrop have thick, waxy leaves which are less likely to be torn or damaged by winds and also help retain moisture. The Mountain Bog Gentian closes it flowers when summer storms move through.

The American League (1,483) has 176 home runs more than the National League (1,307). The American League’s designated hitter (DH) can be blamed for that one. Baltimore’s home runs have helped them secure first place in the AL East leading the Boston Red Sox by 4 games. The Orioles have 5 players who have 10 or more homers; Chris Davis (21), Jonathan Schoop (13), Manny Machado (18), Adam Jones (16), and Mark Trumbo (23) totaling 91 of the Orioles 127 homeruns. Talk about an explosive starting lineup.

Although the Blue Jays are second in homeruns they are currently in third place in the AL East trailing the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. The Blue Jays also have five players with 10 or more home runs; Troy Tulowitzki (13), Josh Donaldson (20), Michael Saunders (15), Jose Bautista (12), and Edwin Encarnacion (22) totaling 82 of the teams 120 homeruns. Despite the Toronto’s offense being electric, their 4439 record isn’t quite enough to catch the Orioles 47-33 record.

Unlike Baltimore leading their division through their home runs, the San Francisco Giants are leading their division but only have 69 home runs. The Washington Nationals are tied for first with the most players with more than 10 home runs at six players; Wilson Ramos (12), Ryan Zimmerman Danny Espinosa (11), Daniel Murphy (14), Danny Espinosa (16), Jason Werth (10), and Bryce Harper (Washingtonpost.com) (16). The Nationals have a total of 108 home runs this season and these six players make up for 79 of those. The Nationals are first in the NL East leading the New York Mets by 5 games. But the Mets aren’t far behind offensively. The Mets have a total of 104 home runs while they have five players with 10 or more homeruns; Neil Walker (15), Asdrubal Cabrera (10), Michael Conforto (10), Yoenis Cespedes (20), and Curtis Granderson (13).

Although the Seattle Mariners are in third place in the league in home runs at 122, they are currently in third place in their division trailing the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. The Mariners also have a League leading six players with more than 10 home runs; Adam Lind (12), Robinson Cano (19), Kyle Seager (16), Leonys Martin (11), Nelson Cruz (21), and Dae-Ho Lee (11). GOLDEN BALLS FAIRY TALES

Once Upon a Time If you are lucky enough to be old enough to remember, but not so old you’ve forgotten, there was a television cartoon called The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show (1959 to 1964); one feature from the show was called “Fractured Fairy Tales.” These were my favorite and quite possibly the muse behind my humor. You can find the Fractured Fairy Tales on youtube.com.

You can follow parts of me here and in more depth on my Blog where you will experience Alice in the Wonderland of Investing, Adult fairy tales, and … Well heck, let’s get these golden balls swinging.

Once upon a time … People could not read and when they traveled they spoke in strange tongues. Out of this came symbols or pictures that represented what a person or shop keeper specialized in. True enough, a black smith was fairly easy to find but what of a baker or butcher.

If you needed to trade your wares or hawk your belongings (hawk is a term we’ll discuss at a later date) for a short period of time in exchange for some leaf or script, what would you look for?

Let’s see now, not only can people not read, but their word for something like money is different than the word or picture used by someone in a neighboring town. Who says leaf or script anymore, for Pete’s sake? Needing something

borrowed or something blue, something old or something new, head to the three golden balls.

That’s right; wherever you saw three hanging balls, it was a place to hawk an item for money.

But wait, there’s more!

While the symbol has been around so long it is even in ancient paintings and drawings, it’s still a place that holds mystery and taboo in modern civilization. It’s true the three balls have a rich untold history from there time on the temple steps during Christ’s visit, to ownership by the Catholic Church, to bars and taverns in the new America, to Jews during the depression (now that’s a fun tale - getting Jewed.) Have you been to a pawn shop? Have you at least watched an episode of Pawn Stars? (A fractured fairy tale for sure.) Pawn Stars popularity has both helped and hurt the industry.

Do yourself a favor and just once, just once, go to a local pawn shop or two. If the broker is friendly and knowledgeable enough, you’ll learn something. Even if they are not, just look around; and yup, you can learn something under those big golden balls. You can see new but mostly used items for sale. NO, you do not get to see any of the items currently held in pawn because that would be a violation of Federal law. Yes, pawnshops are regulated on 13 Federal

levels before adding firearms, precious metals, and gems to the mix and even more regulations on the state’s and local levels. You do get the opportunity to purchase items that were once used as collateral for loans or sold outright. The items in a pawnshop are varied from town to town and shop to shop. I personally know this because I have had three in three different states.

A pawnshop in cities like Reno have different items than a place like Salt Lake City. The rural area of Casa Grande, Arizona, has different items than Elko, Nevada, and they differ from the bigger cities. You’ll notice the items are those that make up the workforce and types of tourists of the area. In turn, the items for sale are also determined by the knowledge of the broker.

That’s right, it isn’t Pawn Stars in Vegas where an expert is available after a commercial break to just swing by and appraise something. Your pawn broker has to know scads about the items they are lending on and selling.

Gadzooks! What is scads? Is that anything like a shit ton? Back when I first started in the business, 1989, I made reference books from newspaper sales ads and paid good money for blue books on everything from china to guns to guitars. Teaching an employee how to value an item was tough then. Now, using the internet for reference material, finding an employee with math skills and common sense, and teaching them marketing basics, it seems to be harder than it was in 1989. Then there is the art of the “sell” to make the sale.

I was in CalRanch the other day and some lady was trying to haggle down the price on two brand new Kids’ saddles. For cripes sake, they were brand spanking new and it’s a mass quantity store on items that hadn’t been used or marred. I have tried the “NO BARGUING” approach in my store. I lost more customers and sales than we made. I can say we do our best to price items fair but for some if they can’t get it for half price with you paying them to take it then they still aren’t happy.

I had a young upstart come close to me whipping him not too long ago. He felt he knew marketing and economics ‘cause he gradimmated from that thar college. (Even I have a Master’s degree and I know it doesn’t make me “S-M-R-T” smart.) He made me an offer he felt was right and fair on a firearm.

I told him I would entertain an offer not an insult. I hope I can explain this to my readers because this “twit still on a tit” did not have a clue. He said, (as an example) “I know you paid $1.00 for this and you have it priced at $1.50. I heard you will take 10% Off items if I pay with cash. I have been in your shop before and you paid the tax because I was a repeat customer. I know you only need 20% on an item because that’s all other stores need to mark things up to make business work. So, I’ll give you 30¢ so you have a little extra.”

Now, if you know math and you know me, then you know that my three swinging golden balls did NOT remain Disney with my response to his “offer.” He learned that this pawnbroker does not tolerate stupidity; nor did I have the inclination to teach him economics.

It’s a fairy tale world for sure.

So if you thought the Golden Balls were a marketing technique, no and yes. Hashtagging my balls (##goldenballs), yes, is marketing; especially for those millennials who think offering me thirty cents for something I paid a dollar is being kind enough to make me rich. Not knowing the history behind the balls, is not a bad thing, but being afraid to experience the great finds in a pawnshop well ... they’ll be swinging ... just a swinging till you feel the love down to your toes ... yup, who knows how your fairy tale will be when you stop by the three golden balls and experience once upon a time.

Your child should have a check-up with an orthodontist at the first recognition of the existence of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age 7.

This is the time the permanent front teeth are erupting. While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orthodontic problems can benefit from earlier treatment. If it appears that your child will need treatment at some point, your orthodontist can advise you about the best time to begin.

If early treatment is indicated it can give your orthodontist the chance to: guide jaw growth, lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct harmful oral habits, improve appearance and self-esteem, guide permanent teeth in to a more favorable position, and improve the way lips meet. These are the signs of a bite thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not right: early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty in chewing or biting, breathing through the mouth, thumb or finger sucking, crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth, jaws that are too far forward or back, biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth, protruding teeth, upper and lower teeth that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t meet or meet in an abnormal way, an unbalanced facial appearance, and grinding or clenching of the teeth. Well-aligned teeth look good and feel good. They contribute to good dental health, and improve the ability to speak, chew and bite. Improved self image and confidence in children can also occur.

Oral Surgeons are health care professionals who perform surgery on the teeth and jaws. Why is their role so important in providing good oral health for children? One of the most common procedures they perform is the removal of third molars or wisdom teeth. After the age of approximately 14 the wisdom teeth have developed enough to be removed. The oral surgeon can determine the possibility of whether these teeth will erupt normally or remain unerupted resulting in a partial of full impaction. The reasons for removal are the possibility of pain, repeated infection of soft tissue behind the lower last tooth, cysts(fluid-filled sacs), tumors, damage to nearby teeth, gum disease, and extensive tooth decay. Studies have also found the presence of an impacted or unerupted third molar significantly increases the likelihood of a lower jaw fracture which can be a concern for very active children participating in various sports.

If your child has completed orthodontic treatment the presence of wisdom teeth may contribute to some relapse of the alignment of the teeth over time. Studies have shown that removing wisdom teeth early reduces the risks of complications. This is because the roots are not fully formed so less tooth structure has to be removed. Bone density is less so less force is needed for removal, thus less traumatic. Recovery time is shortened with a decrease in discomfort. So set up an evaluation with your oral surgeon to discuss when is the best time to have the wisdom teeth removed.

General Dentists should be seen when you or your child feel they have grown too old to see the pediatric dentist. Schedule every six months for cleanings and exams to maintain good oral health and that beautiful smile for the rest of their lives.

HOW STRESS CONTRIBUTES TO BACK PAIN Did you know that stress is a leading cause of illness?

HOW DOES

CANNABIS WORK?

We are constantly hearing about how cannabis works for this ailment and works for that condition but how is that possible?

Nevada allows for 9 conditions: AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, PTSD, cachexia, persistent muscle spasms, seizures, severe nausea, and severe pain. How can one plant help all those conditions?

It comes down to the recently discovered endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our bodies. Our bodies naturally produces and uses different cannabinoids. The number of cannabinoids in cannabis is not fully known, but many studies state about 70-80 different types although about only 10 primary ones.

Back to our bodies, we have receptors (CB1 and CB2) that certain cannabinoids fit into like a key. And these cannabinoids are found in other plants, not just cannabis. So, basically, our bodies need, use, and produce this. Just like anything else our body needs (water, oxygen, food) when we aren't getting what we it, things go wrong. Now I'm not saying everyone should go out and light up a joint. Every body is different and every condition requires different treatment.

Nevada requires all marijuana products to be tested by an independent lab to determine the concentration of THC and CBD (NRS 453A.368) in every product. This is greatly beneficial to anyone who is a medical marijuana patient to help understand what cannabinoid amounts they are getting to appropriately treat their condition. With every person being different, it is important to know exactly how your body is reacting to the levels and types of cannabinoids you are using.

Wildfires can be a scary and dangerous situation, follow these basic propane safety tips on how to keep your family safe during wildfire season.

Preparing in Advance Unfortunately our area is easily susceptible to wildfires, for this reason it is important to always be prepared for a possible fire situation. The area around your propane tank should be cleared of all combustible material such as firewood, leaves, brush, dried weeds and grass. A general guideline is to keep a minimum of a 10 foot radius around your propane tank clear of all previously stated combustible materials.

Safety steps to protect your propane tank:

-C ut the dry grass/weeds around the tank exposing the bare ground

If your home or business is in the path of a wildfire and you have been ordered to evacuate, there are important safety actions to take prior to leaving your home or business. These specific propane safety tips should be taken if time allows. Always follow fire evacuation orders given by authorities or safety personnel.

-U se grass/weed killer around the tank after cutting it down to the surface -S pread base material such as gravel around the tank to prevent vegetation re-growth -M ake sure your propane tank is properly installed on cement blocks or a cement pad - Review

Returning Home After a Wildfire If you did have to evacuate your home or business due to a wildfire, there are very important steps to be taken upon returning.

Even if your home or business sustained no fire damage your propane system still needs to be reactivated by your propane service provider, because the flow of propane was interrupted when the tank was turned off a full propane system leak test is required. Please consider these additional points when returning home: -If you smell propane, immediately leave the area. Do NOT attempt to inspect the area yourself! Call your propane service provider immediately from a safe location, if for some reason you are unable to reach your provider call 911.

-Do not open any propane valves, this includes; appliance valves, gas valves, propane tank service valves. To ensure your safety your propane system will need to be fully inspected for damage and re-activated by a certified propane technician.

Our office wanted to nominate Danny because he is truly an inspiration and hero to our community. Danny, a proud father of two was diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma lung cancer in July of 2015, and since has quite literally fought for his life. His story has touched our hearts and the hearts of many others. It has forced all those familiar with it to re-evaluate how they spend their days and make them appreciate just how precious each day given is. Friends and strangers have watched Danny battle bravely, taken inspiration and strength from his story and joined together in efforts to contribute to his cause.

Hero’s come in all shapes and sizes, our little town of Elko is just lucky enough to have Danny as one of our hometown heroes. Danny was awarded the Honorary Hero of Hope at Elko’s local Relay for Life and had a dedicated lap just for him. He is so amazed and grateful for all of the support

he has received from friends and strangers. He is actually a very shy and private guy.

Throughout his battle he has been nothing but positive in every way.

Knowing his days are limited he has had a fearless perspective on how he wishes to spend his final moments, invited friends and family to say their final good byes and marry the love of his life. A quick glimpse at this Facebook and you’re overwhelmed by all of the love and support left for him.

Cancer is not subtle, it is not gentle, it is a greedy and viscous thief. It takes and takes. Danny is special because he has beat cancer in his own way. Yes, cancer is a thief…but there are things Danny showed us cancer can never take away. Cancer can’t take away your heart, your compassion and it certainly can’t take away the impression left behind. Danny has touched the hearts of many and his fight will not be forgotten.

Danny’s life should be a testament to us all, let us not take a single day for granted, live and love fearlessly….because although it is said too often, we do not in fact know what day will be our last.

Thank you Danny for leaving a powerful legacy behind, may your story continue to inspire and comfort those that are in need.
