CITY OF ELKO SWIMMING POOL

Your Elko SPECIAL OLYMPIC ATHLETES just returned from the Nevada/Northern California regional bowling tournament with GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE METALS!!! 40 plus athletes represented our community with hardwork, compassion and good sportsmanship with each athlete coming home with at least one metal!! Your special-needs athletes are like any other athlete; they like to train, they like to compete and win or lose, they always try their best. The confidence and self-esteem they gain while competing carries over onto the playing field of life, helping to make them contributing members of our community. Your area Special Olympics volunteers and coaches know that Special Olympics is more than sports, it is “training for life”. Elko’s Special Olympic athletes could not train and complete without your help and contributions. Our biggest fundraiser is rapidly approaching. ELKO’S SPECIAL OLYMPICS POLAR PLUNGE IS FEBRUARY 11, 2017 at the City of Elko Swimming Pool. Last year’s Polar Plunge was a success in every way possible. We had a warm Elko winter’s day, cold water, lots of

fun, costume contests and the support from our community that always inspires. We had teams from the mines, area schools, businesses, law enforcement, families and health-care providers taking the plunge. There were more than 90 “plungers” last year and your community raised an incredible $21,832 for Elko’s athletes. It is their courage to brave the cold water and your generosity that allows our athletes the proudly represent Elko as they give their all in athletic competition. Please join us at the City of Elko Swimming Pool on February 11, 2017 for a fun and inspiring event. If you are not a “cold water warrior”, you can register as a “chicken” and you can raise funds for Elko’s Special Olympic athletes without getting wet. Win win!!! Www.sonv.org has all of the information you need to learn more about the Polar Plunge, register to take the plunge, form a team and solicit contributions. Go to the web-page and select “fund raising” at the top of the page. SEE YOU THERE!!!

Broadsides from the Black Rock Press

All of the broadsides featured in the traveling exhibit Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press were produced at the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada. Broadsides are created for numerous reasons, frequently to honor a visiting writer at a campus event. In recent years, for example, broadsides were printed for the Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writers Award. Those broadsides featured a quotation from the writings of Robert Laxalt, one of

Nevada’s most celebrated authors. The 34 framed broadsides in the exhibit utilize the letterpress process with handset type and relief plates. Words + Images will debut on December 9, 2016, in the Barrick Gallery at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko and is set to run through February 6, 2017. Since it was founded by Kenneth Carpenter more than forty years ago, Black Rock Press has been dedicated to the practice and

Ingredients:

FOR THE QUINOA STUFFING:

Ingredients:

FOR THE ROASTED ACORN SQUASH:

• Zest of ½ an orange

• 1 medium butternut squash

FOR THE CASHEW CREAM

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1/2 onion, chopped

• 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk

• 2 acorn squash, halved • Olive oil • Honey

• ¾ cup uncooked quinoa • ¼ cup fresh orange juice • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

• Kosher salt

• ½ teaspoon kosher salt

• Cinnamon

• ½ pear, chopped

• ½ cup dried cranberries • ¼ cup pecans, chopped

• 1 to 2 ounces goat chevre, crumbled

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 tablespoon hot Madras curry powder

• 4 cups reduced sodium vegetable stock • 1/4 cup loosely packed fresh cilantro,

• 1/3 cup cashews

• 1 tablespoon lime juice • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil

• 1 generous pinch sea salt

chopped (for garnish)

Preparation

Preparation

TO PREPARE THE ROASTED ACORN SQUASH 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Cut the tip and tail off of each acorn squash, and them length-wise. Scoop the seeds and innards out of each half.

1. Heat the oven to 400ºF. Cut the squash in half, length-wise, and scoop out the seeds. Place on a baking sheet, cut side down. Roast the squash for 30-40 minutes, or until it's very soft and the skin starts to bubble. Remove from the oven and let cool. Peel away the skin.

2. Drizzle each half with about a tablespoon of olive oil, so that all of the flesh is lightly coated. Drizzle each half with about a tablespoon (or two) of honey. Sprinkle kosher salt and cinnamon over the squash. Place the acorn squash cut-side up on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until the squash is very tender when poked with a fork. TO PREPARE THE QUINOA STUFFING: 1. Rinse the quinoa well and soak it in a small pot for about 10 minutes. Drain the quinoa and add 1.5 cups of water to the pot. Bring the quinoa to a full boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and allow the quinoa to simmer until all of the water is absorbed, about 15 minutes. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together the orange zest, orange juice, olive oil, cinnamon, and salt. Once the quinoa is finished cooking, transfer it to a large bowl and pour the orange dressing over it. Add the remaining ingredients and mix everything together well.

2. Heat the olive oil in a soup pot. Add the onions and garlic; cook 4-5 minutes, until soft but not brown. Stir in the curry powder and cook one minute. Add the squash and vegetable stock. Cook 5-10 minutes, or until heated through. Transfer to a blender and blend until smooth. 3. Serve topped with cashew cream and chopped parsley. FOR THE CASHEW CREAM: Soak the cashews in 1 cup of water for at least 30 minutes. Drain. Add the soaked nuts, almond milk, lime juice, and oil to your blender; blend on high until smooth. Season to taste with salt.

3. Scoop desired amount of quinoa stuffing into each acorn squash and serve!

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flours, baking soda, powder, salt and all the spices; set aside. 2. In a separate bowl add the bananas and blend/process until smooth. Next add the pumpkin, applesauce and oil; process until smooth. Add the buttermilk, and blend. Add the brown and granulated sugar and blend until smooth. Add the eggs and blend. Add half the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture and gently fold to incorporate. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture. Very few lumps should remain. 3. Pour into your baking pans. Fill about 2/3 of the pan. Bake for 40-75 min. Start peeking at 45 min. Cool 20 min. in the pan and then turn them out to cool completely.

TO MAKE THE FROSTING: Beat cream cheese, butter, salt and cinnamon on medium speed until smooth, apprx. 2-3 min. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until smooth and creamy. Slowly pour the caramel into the frosting in gradual increments until the frosting is a spreadable consistency and achieves the maple flavor you desire. Frost cool loaves with an offset spatula.

MLB Free Agency

CO NTRIB U TE D BY ADRIAN BOWLES, RENO NEV.

That’s a wrap! The 2016 season has come to an end and the Chicago Cubs have won their first World Series Championship in 108 years. The curse is finally broken. But just like anything else it’s time to look ahead to what the future has to offer. The Cubs made big changes prior to the 2016 season acquiring Manager Joe Madden, veteran outfielder Jason Heyward, and veteran utility player Ben Zobrist; who eventually won the World Series MVP. Moves like these can make or break your upcoming season. But now is the time for General Managers to prepare for the 2017 season and there are a lot of big names on the free agency list this offseason. Lets take a look at some of the biggest names that are newly free agents. Lets start with the two biggest names that are on the free agency list this season, Yoenis Cespedes and Edwin Encarnacion. After opting out of his outrageous 75 million dollar contract, with two years and 47.5 million dollars left on his contract, Cespedes is on the hunt for a new team or more money. Cespedes slammed 48 homeruns in just 189 games with the New York Mets earning 27.5 million dollars in the 2016 season. Cespedes hit .280 with 31 homeruns, 86 RBI, with a .354 on base percentage leading his team in both home runs and RBI. Cespedes offers great defensive ability when he plays either of the corner outfield positions. The Mets have offered Cespedes a qualifying offer, which is the average of the highest 125 contracts in the MLB, 17.2 million dollars. The catch to the qualifying offers are, if a team makes a qualifying offer to a player and he still chooses to go play for another team, the new team he signs with is required to give the player’s old team their first draft pick in the upcoming draft. But after seeing how outrageous his last contract was no one expects Cespedes to take the 17.2 million when he earned 27.5 million last year and still performed up to par. Many teams are interested in his

40

Dexter Fowler, hoopjargon.com

ability he brings to the field but who is going to afford Cespedes’ price he is asking for, he did just opt out of a contract that was going to pay him 23.75 million over the next two years. Edwin Encarnacion has also been offered a qualifying offer to return to play for the Toronto Blue Jays. Encarnacion earned about 7.2 million dollars in 2016 batting .263 with 42 homeruns, 127 RBI, with an on base percentage of .357. Despite making less money than Cespedes, Encarnacion’s numbers are much more productive. The qualifying offer from the Blue Jays at 17.2 million must look pretty good when it’s 10 million dollars above his last contract. But according to his agent, Paul Kinzer, Encarnacion is looking for a 5-year contract where his is making around 25 million dollars annually. That is a lot of money for a designated hitter and first baseman, but his defensive ability at first definitely stood out this season making him an attractive player for National League teams as well. Encarnacion carried the Blue Jays offensively leading the team in home runs and RBIs. We’ll see if the Jays will be able to offer a contract big enough for him. The Blue Jays also lost All-Star outfielder Jose Bautista to free agency this season. So how will Toronto be able to hold one or two of their best players who are both in search of big contracts? Being ranked #1 and #2 best free agents in the offseason means a lot of teams won’t be able to afford them. Thankfully this year’s free agency list has a lot of position players to compare them to. There aren’t many infielders that play to the capacity that Encarnacion does but the market does have some options available. Another hardhitting first basemen who is available is 35 year-old Mike

Edwin Encarnacion, sportsonearth.com

Napoli of the Cleveland Indians. Napoli hit .239 with a career high 34 homeruns, 101 RBI, and 194 strikeouts in 2016. In his 11-year career Napoli has made it to the post season in eight of those seasons; so his teams normally find a way to win games. The Cleveland Indians did not offer Napoli the qualifying offer now letting other teams make offers to him. Last season the Indians signed Napoli to a one-year 7 million dollar deal where he eventually made about 10 million dollars with bonuses. Following Napoli’s most productive year, why wouldn’t the Tribe want to sign him for an extra 10 million? Having Napoli’s power-bat in the lineup took a lot of added pressure off of their utility player Carlos Santana who also hit 34 home runs. After watching how well their team played together throughout the season it will be interesting to see how the Indians further pursue Mike Napoli, if they choose to do so at all. Among other infield free agents the Dodger have lost both veteran second baseman Chase Utley and third basemen Justin Turner. Finishing his age 37 season, Utley batted .252 with 14 homeruns and 58 RBI with the best season he’s had since leaving the Phillies in 2014. Utley earned around 7 million dollars in 2016. But going into his age 38 season how much more does Utley have left in the tank? The Dodgers did not offer a qualifying offer to Utley but they did offer one to Justin Turner, but seems unlikely that he’ll take the offer. Turner finished the 2016 season batting .275 with 27 homeruns and 90 RBI making him the most attractive third baseman on the market, which leads to the reason why he didn’t take the qualifying offer. Turner is looking for a big payday after only making 2.5 million dollars in 2016 while being one of the National League’s best third basemen.

supplying another great bat that can play anywhere on the lineup card. Despite not having as great of defensive ability Jose Bautista is also a free agent. Bautista normally patrols in right field with his great arm but doesn’t have the speed to cover that much ground. But where Bautista’s defense is lacking his offense definitely is not, Bautista batted .234 this past season with 22 homeruns and 69 RBI. Bautista as hit a whopping 262 home runs since 2009 for the Blue Jays. He doesn’t only supply his ability on the field; the energy he’s brought into Blue Jays games is undeniable. Adding a veteran player like Bautista to any team might be able to fire up the rest of the players who are there. Two other outfield veterans who have always been a threat at the plate who are now free agents are Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles and Matt Holiday of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mark Trumbo led the American League in homeruns smacking 47 in 2016, along with driving in 108 RBI and batting .256. Trumbo has been known for his power since the Angels drafted him in 2004, but no one knew he would continue to hit at least 30 home runs season after season. After only making 9.15 million dollars in 2016 the Orioles have offered Trumbo the qualifying offer to stay with the team. With his production in Baltimore and receiving 8 million dollars more it could be possible that we see Trumbo in an Orioles uniform again next season. Where Trumbo might likely remain with the same team the situation with Matt Holiday is very different. Holiday didn’t have a bad year in 2016 batting .246 with 20 home runs and 62 RBI, but the Cardinals are looking to revamp their team with younger players. Randal Grichuk came along having an amazing third

Outfield free agents have bigger names to offer. World Series Champion center fielder Dexter Fowler is now a free agent after opting out of his contract to remain with the Chicago Cubs. Fowler batted .276 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI in 2016. Last season Fowler nearly signed with the Baltimore Orioles but backed out late to join the Cubs on their road to victory. Fowler can play any of the outfield positions with phenomenal ability while also

season batting .240 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI. Grichuk is now 25 compared to Holiday’s 36 years of age. The Cardinals didn’t make Holiday a qualifying offer while stating Grichuk will be the new starter in left field. Holiday only started 85 games for the Cardinals in left field, imagine if he had much more playing time, his stats could be very different. Holiday may not have the speed or defensive ability that he once had, but he offers still a productive bat in the lineup for a cheaper price. After reaching the biggest deal in club history at 120 million in 2010, Holiday earned 17 million dollars last season. But after not receiving a qualifying offer, one can imagine that his new contract won’t be as magnificent as his last. Finally, pitching is lacking the most in this 2016 free agent market although two of the leagues best closers are available, Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen. Where Jansen received a qualifying offer from the Dodgers, Chapman didn’t from the Cubs. Jansen posted a 1.83 ERA with 47 saves and 104 strikeouts in only 68.2 innings pitched. Jansen’s numbers were outstanding. Much like Jansen, Chapman posted a 1.55 ERA with 36 saves and 90 strikeouts in only 58 innings pitched. Both players’ stats are very similar and both pitchers bring high heat. Chapman is known as the fastest person to ever throw a baseball touching 105 MPH and Jansen is known to hit the 102 MPH mark from time to time. Both pitchers also made about 8 million dollars last season yet Jansen is the only to receive the qualifying offer. Both are on the hunt for mega deals this offseason though. With how productive Jansen has been, a contract for him shouldn’t be very different than Chapman’s.

- 27TH ANNUAL -

Elko Christmas Bird Count Prior to the turn of the century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas "Side Hunt": They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won. Conservation was in its beginning stages around the turn of the 20th century, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank Chapman, an early officer in the then budding Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition-a "Christmas Bird Census"-that would count birds in the holidays rather than hunt them. So began the Christmas Bird Count. Thanks to the inspiration of Frank M. Chapman and the enthusiasm of twenty-seven dedicated birders, twenty-five Christmas Bird Counts were held that day. The locations ranged from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific Grove, California with most counts in or near the population centers of northeastern North America. Those original 27 Christmas Bird Counters tallied around 90 species on all the counts combined. This year marks the 117th Christmas Bird Count. Each December, birders interesting in participating in the CBC can sign up and join in through the Audubon website. From December 14 through January 5 each year tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas brave snow, wind, or rain, and take part in the effort. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action. The data collected by observers over the past century allow researchers, conservation biologists, and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey, it provides a picture of how the continent's bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years.

There is a specific methodology to the CBC, and all participants must make arrangements to participate in advance with the circle compiler, but anyone can participate. Each count takes place in an established 15-mile wide diameter circle, and is organized by a count compiler. Count volunteers follow specified routes through a designated 15-mile (24-km) diameter circle, counting every bird they see or hear all day. The Elko Count Circle includes portions of Elko, Spring Creek, and South Fork. It's not just a species tally--all birds are counted all day, giving an indication of the total number of birds in the circle that day. If you are a beginning birder, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. If your home is within the boundaries of a CBC circle, then you can even report the birds that visit your feeder on count day as long as you have made prior arrangement with the count compiler. Come join the members of Bristlecone Audubon as they hold their 27th Elko Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Everyone is welcome and all levels of experience can participate, new birders will be partnered with experienced members. Observers meet at 7:30 a.m. at one of two locations, one in Elko and one in Spring Creek. Groups will go out on assigned routes which take an average of 4 to 6 hours to complete. At 4:30 p.m. all count information is turned in at the annual potluck dinner where the data is compiled and preliminary results can be announced. For more info contact: Lois K. Ports at 775-753-2569 or ports@frontiernet.net.

But it’s no easy task to create that effortless atmosphere of festive cheer. There are visitors dropping by in need of refreshments, the kids are in a permanent state of over-excitement, and on the big day itself an operation of military precision must be organized to ensure a delicious Christmas dinner arrives at the dining room table on time. It can seem like an impossible task to keep on top of everything, but worry not because help is at hand. Ruby Mountain Woodworking has put together the Christmas kitchen guide, with tips and information on everything you need to make your Christmas go perfectly.

Now's not the time for a major overhaul, but following several quick tips can increase kitchen efficiency and perhaps even lessen some of the stress of entertaining.

• Don't use it? Lose it. The holidays are a time of

giving, making it a good time to donate littleused items or duplicated items that are taking up space. Set aside any unused items for your favorite charity.

• Reclaim your counters. Temporarily store

bulky countertop items on a pantry shelf or out-of-the-way place. You'll free up counter space for meal prep and entertaining.

• Get party ready. Pull all holiday dishware

(permanent and disposable) onto your dining room table.

• Divide and conquer. Wash dishes and polish

utensils so table settings are ready to go.

• Cook up a place to bake. If you don't already

have a dedicated baking area in your kitchen, consider setting one up.

• Go with the flow. Traffic patterns through

kitchens can increase with holiday entertaining. If you don't mind sharing your kitchen, think about removing or re-arranging some furniture to add space or improve flow.

And lastly. Have fun. The holiday season is about family, friends and good Ol' Saint Nick.

Why Choose Ongoing

Chiropractic Care? “If I start chiropractic care, do I have to keep going forever?”

Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic Center

It’s a common myth associated with chiropractic care that is simply not true. While we’re happy to help our patients feel better by bringing them out of pain with chiropractic care, having to go forever isn’t the case. Even though a course of care varies for each person, one thing is true—we aim to make you a partner in your health. And while you don’t have to do anything, we have many patients who choose to see us on a regular basis. Have you ever wondered about maintenance care?

2. Improved Posture Let’s face it—a lot of us sit for most of our day or stare at some portable device. You might not notice immediate problems from over-sitting or looking down, but down the line your posture could suffer. When your posture is compromised, this can lead to other issues like sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain and more. Get ahead of these issues by opting for structural chiropractic care, reversing these habits before you develop a problem.

Here’s how it can benefit you.

3. Enhanced Wellness Many patients, after reaching what science constitutes “normal” can tell when they need an adjustment. We can do more than just bring you out of pain—we help our patients continue to live the life they desire without problems through health optimization. This doesn’t mean we need to see someone for an adjustment every day or even every week—sometimes, just a once to twice a month “tune up” can be ideal.

1. Prevention When you visit our practice for ongoing chiropractic care, it can actually help you strengthen your problem area to help prevent an injury from reoccurring. Regular adjustments also keep your body balanced and in tune, allowing for better healing and correction of new spinal problems to avoid a relapse. Many continue to make objectified changes on X-Ray

SAFETY COLUMN

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY SAFE

CONT RIBUTE D B Y JULIE A. KR AUS, WEST ERN STAT E S PR O PANE

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PROPANE SAFETY AND WINTER STORMS As the thermometer goes down, preparation for winter weather is a must. If you use propane in your home, make sure that you and your family know and understand what needs to be done before, during, and after winter storms. Taking a few simple propanerelated safety precautions and discussing them with your family can help you all thoroughly enjoy the upcoming winter wonderland. It is important to make sure your propane tank, whether it is located above or below the ground, is marked properly by a flag, pole, or stake that is higher than the average snow cover depth for your location. By doing this it will increase the odds of it being seen by someone such as a snowplow operator and your propane delivery driver. It is also important to note that propane delivery trucks are very wide, please clear your driveway to a width of 12 feet to allow access. Don’t forget to clear a path to your propane tank so your delivery driver can easily make your propane delivery. It is important to have an adequate supply of propane in your tank during the winter months because winter storms may cause access to your property to be limited. It is recommended that you establish an automatic delivery schedule with your propane provider to avoid your tank running out of propane. Snow and ice can create serious problems for your home’s propane system by freezing and cracking

pipes, regulators, valves, or other types of propane equipment. Once the snow has fallen, make certain that the venting of ALL gas appliances and propane regulators remain clear of snow and ice. Should snow or ice cover a vent, bend or break the venting, gas fumes could become trapped in a home which could potentially cause carbon monoxide poisoning. When clearing the roof, avoid shoveling snow onto exposed piping around the propane regulator near the building or onto the propane tank and piping, as well as any meters or other piping that may be in use. In addition, all propane tanks should be kept free of any snow accumulation. Whenever possible, use a broom instead of a shovel in order to not damage your propane system components.

Make sure you know how and where to shut off the outdoor propane supply and indoor propane appliances and that all family members know what propane smells like and can detect its odor.

IF YOU SMELL PROPANE, TAKE THE RIGHT STEPS: 1. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. 2. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cellphones. 3. Get everyone away from the home or area where you suspect gas is leaking. 4. If safe to do so, close or shut off the main gas supply valve by turning it clockwise. 5. Call your propane provider immediately from a safe place to report the leak. If you cannot reach your propane provider, call 911 and do not return to the area until a propane provider, emergency responder, or qualified service technician gives the OK. 6. GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, your propane retailer must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance, these defectors provide an additional measure of safety and security for you and your family. And last but not least, create an emergency preparedness plan and review it regularly with your family in order to keep them safe during the upcoming winter season. For more information regarding winter storm preparedness or for questions during a winter storm, contact your propane provider or Western States Propane for information. Western States Propane has two convenient Nevada locations to serve you.

12TH ANNUAL ELKO REGIONAL

Interfaith Christmas Crèche Exhibit Highlighting Christmas Wreaths Christmas is a magical time of year with homes, business, city streets, and churches decked with decorations and reminders of the season. Many of those decorations that we enjoy have traditional symbolism associated with them. For some, this beautiful symbolism may get lost in the modern-day hustle and bustle of Christmas. Wreaths are one those traditional decorations which has symbolism the some may not be aware of. To remind of us of the symbolism, Christmas Wreaths will be featured at this year’s Annual Elko Regional Interfaith Christmas Crèche Exhibit.

In a 1988 New York Times article it states, “The evergreen wreath— its circular shape an emblem not only of perfection and unity but also of the warm, enduring sun— later became a Christian symbol for Christ’s suffering and ultimate triumph over death. It is believed that the holly wreath, with its sharp, pointed

The Christian symbolism of the wreath directs us to Jesus Christ, whose birth the Crèche Exhibit celebrates. leaves, first represented the crown of thorns worn by Christ on the cross, the little red berries symbolizing drops of blood. Later wreaths were formed from a variety of pines and firs, with evergreens embodying eternal life.” Years ago wreaths were decorated with four candles, three on the exterior and one in the middle. The middle candle was lit on Christmas Eve to symbolize the arrival of the Light of the World - Jesus Christ. This bit of tradition further makes the wreath a perfect addition to the Crèche Exhibit. Although wreaths will be featured, at the heart of the exhibit is the Nativity as recorded in the New Testament. Hundreds of nativities, depicting the Christmas story, from the exquisite and ornate, to the whimsical and simple will be on display. All of the displays come from members of the community. Along with the displays there will be live musical performance from local groups and individuals, children’s drawings, and, a short, live re-enactment and telling of the Christmas story repeated several times.

Twelve years ago the exhibit was started with, or initiated by, an extensive collection of Madonna and Child (or Mary and Baby Jesus) artwork. Over the years, portions of that collection have been displayed at the exhibit. The 10th Annual Exhibit, was the swan song for this collection and the last time that the entire collection was on display. This year, for those attending the exhibit, there will be the opportunity to receive one of the pieces of this collection. In partnership with Joshua Tree Shelter, the exhibit will be collecting gifts for the homeless, anything that will help them through the winter: hats, gloves, boots, thermals, sleeping bags, hand warmers, and food gift cards are some suggested items. Donations may be brought in anytime during the exhibit. The Exhibit opens Thursday, December 1 and runs through Sunday, December 4 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ North Fifth Street building (3001 N. Fifth St., Elko). Admission to the exhibit, which is open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day, is free.

They Call Me

Yuck Mouth! Dental disease in pets is preventable so don't turn your nose to your pet's bad breath! The odor might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet's teeth and gums but its internal organs as well. It is estimated that 75% of pets in the United States have some degree of dental disease. As the old adage goes, it’s less expensive to prevent disease than to treat disease! Periodontal disease is defined as infection and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. Periodontal disease is the most frequent disorders found in pets. It develops, as a result of buildup of bacterial plaque and the presence of calculus when no hygiene program is implemented. When periodontal disease is present, brushing your pets’ teeth is too late, and dental cleaning is required to get back on track. According to the American Association of Veterinary Dentistry, 80% of dogs and 70% cats (YES cats need dental care too) over the age three years old are affected by tartar build up. Caring for your pets’ teeth and gums is as important as caring for your own. Dogs and cats accumulate plaque five times faster than humans. The plaque buildup on just two teeth alone contains over 1 trillion bacteria. Imagine going five days without brushing your teeth!

Elko Veterinary Clinic would be happy to work with you to develop an oral home hygiene plan for your pet. This would include going over how to begin brushing your pet's teeth and many other options that are available. If you are considering brushing your pets teeth remember that pets require special toothpaste. NEVER use human toothpaste or baking soda as these products are harmful if swallowed. Special pet toothpastes rely on enzymatic rather than brushing action to work. Thus merely applying them to your pet's teeth will reduce tartar. Unsure if your pet is in need of dental care or has an issues? Lift the lip and take a look – if you notice tartar buildup, loose or missing teeth, bleeding from the gums, excessive drooling, or painful cheeks and teeth, it’s time to bring them in for an oral exam. Other signs of dental disease include bad breath known as halitosis, dropping food, or reluctance to eat or drink. Let our veterinary team at Elko Veterinary Clinic create

AM

a treatment plan (estimate) that will go over exactly what we do and how we can help you take care of your pets dental needs. We can provide an at-home care plan after the dental cleaning as well! Dental disease isn’t just bad for your pet’s teeth; the bacteria buildup can actually damage internal organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys. Pets often hide their medical problems, systemic diseases may go undetected without diagnostic testing. That is why we include preoperative blood screenings for all our dental patients. The health of your pet is our TOP priority and will dictate the treatments and medications needed to get their mouths back in tip-top shape.

It will also help prevent recurring bad breath and prolong the life of your pet's teeth by slowing gum and bone erosion. Ultimately, good oral hygiene will also prolong your pet's life by guarding against serious infection of the gums, liver, kidneys and/or heart thus optimizing our pet's health so they live longer lives.
