Nevada Discovery Ride Samantha Szesciorka
Tales from the Trail In conjunction with the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the Northeastern Nevada Museum is featuring series of films and presentations in the museum theater. At 5:00 pm on February 4 (Saturday), enjoy the special program Nevada Discovery Ride with Samantha Szesciorka. Last year, Samantha set out on an epic equestrian adventure. For nearly three months and more than 1,100 miles she traveled around northern Nevada with her adopted mustang Sage and her dog Bella. The trio trekked through some of the state’s most remote places—exploring historic trails, battling wild weather, and getting up close with wildlife. Discover the adventures and challenges they encountered along the way in this thrilling presentation! Samantha will share incredible photographs from their
journey and share tales from the trail that highlight some of the hidden beauty of the Silver State. Samantha is a member of the Long Riders Guild, an international association of equestrian explorers. This is her second long distance journey on horseback; she completed a nearly 500 mile ride across Nevada in 2013. Samantha is currently planning her next equestrian adventure. You can learn more at www.NevadaDiscoveryRide.com. The Northeastern Nevada Museum is located at 1515 Idaho Street in Elko. Regular public hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday. For more information, please call (775) 738-3418 or email director@museumelko.org.

FEEL THE BRRRR! The Elko Special Olympics Polar Plunge is right-around-the-corner and the weather is PERFECT!!! If you are looking for a chance to be brave, dress-up in a costume, be part of a team, win incentives and door prizes and support a great cause then join us at the Polar Plunge. Courageous supporters of Elko Special Olympics are already busy getting their costumes ready and getting contributions to support Elko’s special-needs athletes. And…we need your help!! You can still sign-up or captain a team to plunge in the Elko Swimming Pool on February 11th. It’s EASY!!! Go to www.sonv.org to sign up or contribute to your favorite team. See our web-site for the incentives you can get for taking the plunge. The entire event is FUN and you can tell everyone you braved the icy waters to support Special Olympics. Elko’s Special Olympic athletes could not train and complete without your help and contributions. Our biggest fundraiser, the ELKO’S SPECIAL OLYMPICS POLAR PLUNGE is February 11, 2017 from 11am to 2pm at the City of Elko Swimming Pool. Last year’s Polar Plunge was a success in every way possible and we are looking to exceed those contribution totals. We had
a warm Elko winter’s day, cold water, lots of fun, costume contests and the support from our community that always inspires. We had teams from the mines, area schools, businesses, law enforcement, families and health-care providers taking the plunge. There were more than 90 “plungers” last year and your community raised an incredible $21,832 for Elko’s athletes. It is their courage to brave the cold water and your generosity that allows our athletes the proudly represent Elko as they give their all in athletic competition. Please join us at the City of Elko Swimming Pool on February 11, 2017 for a fun and inspiring event. If you are not a “cold water warrior”, you can register as a “chicken” and you can raise funds for Elko’s Special Olympic athletes without getting wet. Win win!!! Www.sonv.org has all of the information you need to learn more about the Polar Plunge, register to take the plunge, form a team and solicit contributions. Go to the web-page and select “fund raising” at the top of the page. SEE YOU THERE!!!

Our kitchen is where we spend most our time cooking and eating and it’s also a space where we like to entertain guests. If you find your kitchen is too small do to any of these, then it’s time to update and expand or rearrange. Renovations can be extensive or very simple, but if your space isn’t working then it is time to change it up.
No one likes to clean, if anyone tells you otherwise run in the opposite direction, because they are crazy. Cleaning your kitchen doesn’t have to be such a hassle. In today’s market, there are so many new options for kitchen finishes and appliances that are easier to clean and even keep clean.
3
4
Outdated appliances: This is an easy one to detect, but a hard to justify. For most, if your appliances work efficiently and look fine you’re happy. Most people don’t see changing appliances can really update the look, storage and functionality in your kitchen. Appliances that are ten years old or older could be considered outdated with how far technology has come.
Lack of counter space: Counter space is an underrated commodity in homes today. Counterspace is key to any kitchen whether you are using it for prepping, storage space, or somewhere to put the snacks for that special party. Improving your storage inside the cabinets you have, can help give you the space needed. Pullouts and dividers are just a few that can be installed into any cabinet to help get organized.
6
Not enough light:
7
Thinking of selling your home:
We aren’t in the stone ages anymore, so stop cooking in your no lighted kitchen as if we were. Under cabinet lighting can be an easy fix to making your space feel new and fresh. Darkness makes the space feel small and gloomy, brightening up your space will make it feel larger.
If you are thinking of selling your home with a kitchen that belongs in the 1970’s, think twice. Investing money into your home, whether its new or just some simple fixes, it will pay off for you in the long run. By investing money into your kitchen, you will see a greater return on the sale of your home, allowing you to use that equity to invest in your next home.
Make your house a home again by upgrading your outdated place, giving yourself the space to entertain again and enjoy those moments with friends and family.
5
Stained, scratched or cracked flooring: Nowadays, the options out there for flooring seems limitless and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Choosing a floor that suits your lifestyle, is the key. Some may prefer hardwood, tile, or laminate. It all depends on you.
Give yourself the space to keep clean and organized, and add those finishes that make your space unique and special to you. Make your kitchen the room in your house that you can be proud of. When you gather in your kitchen, your invited guests will come and leave as family.

Principles
behind the ideal protein weight loss method The body has three sources of energy from which it draws to meet its metabolic needs. Carbohydrates, Muscle, and fat. Chronologically, the body will first draw on its carbohydrate reserve before turning to muscle and fat. During the weight loss phases of the protocol, we limit carbohydrate intake to encourge the body to turn to its fat and muscle components for energy. By eating high biological protein foods, the protocol helps to support muscle mass and teaches dieters how to develop smarter eating habits and lifestylke choices so they can maintain a stable weight after weight loss is achieved.

Ventless Fireplaces: What You Need to Know

Ventless fireplaces provide a convenient, low-cost alternative to traditional fireplace options, but they aren’t trouble-free. Ventless fireplaces, which don’t include a flue or chimney, have been sold in the U.S. since 1980. They’re powered by natural gas, propane, alcohol-based gels, or electricity. Although less expensive and easier to install than a traditional fireplace, the gas and propane options do have some risks since there’s no chimney to expel their gases to the outside. Modern ventless fireplace models are strictly regulated by federal agencies and standards groups for safe operation in your home. But the debate about their safety does continue. In fact, Massachusetts and California, as well as Canada and other countries, have outlawed gas and propane ventless fireplaces.

Types of Ventless Fireplaces
Ventless fireplaces are typically freestanding units that don’t require a flue or chimney to exhaust combustion air to the outdoors, making them relatively easy to install in any room. Those fueled by natural gas or propane can be positioned anywhere that a supply line can be installed — usually against a wall or inside an existing masonry fireplace. The latest models also feature

automatic ignition, a function that eliminates the need for an outside electrical circuit to spark the pilot light — a handy feature should the electricity ever go out. Gel-fueled units are even more versatile, as they’re completely self-contained (not tethered to a supply line) and light with a match. Electric units need only a 120-volt outlet nearby, and a dedicated circuit isn’t necessary.
Installation & Maintenance
Ventless fireplaces that are connected to a gas or propane line require professional installation by a gas or plumbing contractor, and shouldn’t have a heating capacity that exceeds the appropriate room size recommended by the manufacturer. Despite their relative ease of installation, and regardless of fuel source, ventless fireplaces aren’t a turn-them-on-and-forget option. All
units require at least annual cleaning of the log set and other exposed components, while gas and propane products should also have their oxygen and carbon monoxide monitors checked and adjusted annually for optimum performance.
Costs
Gas- or propane-connected ventless fireplaces usually include a factory-finished enclosure and/or mantle. With professional installation, they cost $2,000 to $6,000. Installation may not require a building permit, but check with your local building department to confirm if there are any regulations or limits on the use of a ventless fireplace. Gel-powered ventless fireplaces generally cost less, $300 to $700, and don’t require professional installation and associated costs. You’ll need to assemble some of the unit, including putting the factory-supplied logs in front of the gel canisters. The fuel comes in
Regardless, ventless fireplaces of any kind and size are nearly 100% efficient, as very little of the heat they emit escapes the room. By contrast, an openfaced, wood-burning fireplace with a chimney may lose 85% or more of its heat output through the flue. 26

I needed about 1/2 cup strawberries to make 1/4 cup puree.
• 5 oz. baby spinach
• 1/4 c. chopped parsley
• 1/2 c. grated Parmesan
Preparation:
Bring 12" sauté pan of water to a boil and generously season with salt. Prepare a rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper. Cook pasta according to al dente package directions. Remove ravioli using a slotted spoon and place in a single layer on the sheet pan. Discard water. Place the pan over medium heat. Add olive oil, butter, and garlic; sauté until butter begins to bubble, about 1 minute. Add red pepper flakes, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper; stir with a rubber spatula. Add half the ravioli and stir gently until well coated; immediately add balance of ravioli and repeat. Flip the ravioli gently as needed to prevent them from sticking. Cook ravioli until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Toss in spinach gently. Garnish with parsley and grated cheese. Serve immediately.

Winter vs Spring
ROBINS The American Robin (Turdus migratorius), or robin, is one of the most familiar and widely distributed songbirds in North America. Some sources say the American robin ranks behind only the redwinged blackbird as the most abundant land bird in North America. It is equally at home in city parks and gardens, rural farms, woodland edges, and subalpine meadows. In late summer and continuing on up until the breeding season begins in spring, robins form nomadic flocks that roost together at night and feed together by day. The robin winters from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast. Some robins remain in the same area year-round, or migrate short distances in the spring and fall. Often the robins you see in winter come from their northern breeding grounds, which may be over 300 miles away.
CONTRIBUTED BY LOIS PORTS FOR THE BRISTLECONE AUDUBON CHAPTER
In our area the winter robins will travel around in mixed flocks containing robins and cedar waxwings. Most of our breeding robins will have migrated further south and will not return until the weather warms in the spring. During the winter robins feed on berries and fruit that remain on trees from the previous summer and fall. These flocks will move into a neighborhood and strip the trees of fruit before moving into the next area where fruit can be found. Based on casual observations over the years, local birders have noticed that our wintering robins often have a much darker, brighter breast color than our paler breeding birds. Depending on the weather, our breeding robins will return in late February and March. It is one of the earliest bird species to lay eggs, beginning to breed shortly after returning to its summer range from its winter range. An American Robin can produce three successful broods in one year. On average, though, only 40 percent of nests successfully produce young. Only 25 percent of those fledged young survive to November. From that point on, about half of the robins alive in any year will make it to the next. Despite the fact that a lucky robin can live to be 14 years old, the entire population turns over on average every six years.

Big Moves FOR THE MARINERS & INDIANS
CONTRIBUTED BY ADRIAN BOWLES RENO, NEV
E A R LY T H I S O F F - S E A S O N the Seattle Mariners seemed liked they were in the races to acquire some of the big bats on the market to help build their lineup by acquiring a corner outfielder and a first basemen. Yet the Mariners didn’t rush to go out and offer a huge contract to anyone and relied on the trade market to acquire their missing pieces. On Friday January 6, the Mariners completed a trade for the 32-yearold versatile outfielder Jarrod Dyson in exchange for pitcher Nathan Karns, who is 29 years of age. Dyson is a 6-year veteran who batted .278 with 1 homerun, 25 RBI, with an OBP of .340 last season. Karns only has three years of experience and finished the 2016 season with a 6-2 win-loss record while posting a 5.15 ERA and 101 strikeouts in only 94.1 innings pitched. Both players had good seasons but it’s what Dyson offers on the base paths and in the field that really interest the Mariners.
DYSON IS SUCCESSFUL 84.8% ON HIS AT TEMPTS TO STEAL DURING THAT TIME. Dyson has recorded on average at least 25 stolen bases in the past 5 seasons. Since 2012 Dyson has stolen a total of 156 bases, which is tied for 6th most in the league with outfielder Ben Revere. Last season the Mariners as a team only stole a total of 56 bases, that marked is 24th in the league. Dyson will be able to help make that number jump quickly. Dyson will most likely play primarily as Leonys Martin’s backup in center field for the Mariners. Martin posted a .247 batting average with 15 homeruns, 47 RBI, and an OBP of .306. Martin’s offensive numbers definitely are better than Dyson’s and Martin

stole 24 bases in the 2016 season. Dyson does make a great backup for Martin but we can also see Dyson helping the corner outfielders Mitch Haniger and Ben Gamel with the recent departure of Seth Smith. Also having both Dyson and Martin in the outfield at the same time will make it even harder for fly balls to drop between them.
The Mariners starting lineup could end up looking something like this if they choose to play both Martin and Dyson simultaneously. 1. Jarrod Dyson OF 2. Jean Segura SS 3. Robison Cano 2B 4. Nelson Cruz DH 5. Kyle Seager 3B 6. Mike Zunino C 7. Valencia/Vogelbach 1B 8. Leonys Martin OF 9. Gamel/Haniger OF
Putting speed and defense in the outfield and a strong offense in the infield with one of the leagues best DH’s in Nelson Cruz, this lineup looks set to be a top contender in the AL West. The Mariners also completed a trade with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire 30 yearold starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo for 34 year-old outfielder Seth Smith. Gallardo had a rough season in 2016 struggling with

edwin encarnacion, cleveland.com
injuries and it was his least productive year in the majors in his 9-year career. Gallardo finished the season with a win-loss record of 6-8 with a 5.42 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 118 innings pitched. The Mariners are hoping Gallardo will resemble the pre-2016 pitcher who averaged a win-loss record of 10-8 with an ERA of 3.79 and averaged around 143 strikeouts a season. During his 7 years with the Milwaukee Brewers and his one season with the Texas Rangers the man was outstanding. Despite the injuries that held back Gallardo a lot in 2016, he was also playing in on of the most offensive happy ballparks in the league in Camden Yards. Last year was only one of two seasons Gallardo has had where he gave up more hits than his total innings pitched. He also did this in Texas, another hitter-happy park, but his ERA and his winloss record were much better finishing 1311 with a 3.42 ERA in Texas compared to his 6-8 record with a 5.42 ERA in Baltimore. The Mariners are hoping Gallardo will return to his playing days he had with the Rangers or better as the fourth potential starter.
The Mariners starting rotation could end up looking like this heading into the 2017 season 1. Felix Hernandez 2. Hisashi Iwakuma 3. James Paxton 4. Yovani Gallardo 5. Ariel Miranda/Chris Heston

Acquiring Jean Segura in the beginning of the off-season and now Gallardo and Dyson, General Manager Jerry Dipoto is planning to win the division. Unlike the Mariners where they are hoping to reach a playoff berth, the Cleveland Indians had to make moves in order to stay as the World Series contender they were in 2016. After losing Mike Napoli to his one-year contract, the Indians had to make moves to acquire another bat to help their DH Carlos Santana and make up for the injured Michael Brantley. Many people thought the Indians would resign Napoli after the production he had in 2016 but that idea went away quickly as the winter weeks dragged on. Acquiring Napoli soon became further and further away from the conversation as the second best free agent decided he didn’t want to return to his former team in Edwin Encarnacion.

On January 5, 2017 the Cleveland Indians signed Edwin Encarnacion to a 3-year deal worth $60 million dollars. There is also a club option for 2020 worth $25 million if the Indians choose to exercise it, and if they don’t Encarnacion will gain an extra $5 million just for the Indians deciding they don’t want him. Encarnacion’s contract marks the highest contract the Indians have ever given another player passing Travis Hafner’s 3-year $57 million deal and Nick Swisher’s 4-year $56 million dollar deal.

In the past five seasons Encarnacion has hit 193 homeruns and has 550 RBI. Everyone knew the Indians needed to get another bat to help Santana, Kipnis, and Lindor, but they just got the best hitter on the market. He may not have been the number one free agent in the off-season due to his defensive ability but now splitting time with Santana seems like the perfect fit for him since Santana has quite the bat as well.
The Indians starting lineup in 2017 could potentially look something like 1. Carlos Santana 1B 2. Jason Kipnis 2B 3. Francisco Lindor SS 4. Edwin Encarnacion DH 5. Jose Ramirez 3B 6. Michael Brantley OF (If healthy) 7. Tyler Naquin OF 8. Lonnie Chisenhall OF 9. Yan Gomes C
Both the Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians have made moves that make each look like the top contender in their divisions. The Mariners show the sacrifices it takes to trade away players to gain Dyson, Gallardo, and Segura, to become a dominant team in the west compared to the Indians where they can cash out on one bat to make their team even better. Both are different approaches, but it’ll be interesting to see how these two teams will face the 2017 season in hopes of having a playoff berth or returning to the World Series.

cancun TROPICAL VA C AT I O N CONTRIBUTED BY SUE BRADFORD OF JOURNEYS AROUND THE WORLD
When people talk about Cancun, they tend to generalize the area. It’s very important to know exactly where in Cancun you are talking about. This month we are going to be focusing on the Hotel Zone of Cancun.

Looking for a great tropical location for a little rest & relaxation (and a whole lot of fun for the entire family)? Then maybe the Cancun hotel zone is the right destination for you. The Hotel zone is a very short ride from the airport in Cancun. Once you clear customs and find your transfer, you will be at your resort in no time at all. This close proximity to the airport makes the Cancun Hotel zone a great choice for a short 4 or 5 night stay. This area is located on a Peninsula, surrounded by the Mexican Caribbean Sea and the Nichupte Lagoon, which allows for some pretty amazing ocean views from your rooms balcony. The Hotel zone is a very urban area, and most resorts here are high rise buildings. The resorts are situated very close together here as well, so if long walks on the beach, palm trees and privacy are what you are after, this is not the area for you. But if you are looking for somewhere that has an amazing nightlife, wonderful food and great shopping, then the Hotel Zone could be the right choice for you.
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
Take a night away from your resort and check out the action on the Avenida Kukulkan. The night clubs here are hopping, and it’s easy to arrange a VIP tour to check them out. Have some dinner first at Carlos & Charlie’s and then hit the town. Some options for you to visit are Coco Bongo, The City Nightclub or Mandala Disco. If dancing isn’t your thing, then make sure you come down here during the day and do your shopping. The La Isla Shopping Village has excellent shops offering a variety of options. Prada, Louis Vuitton, Coach and more. I’m sure you will find some great treasures to take
These are just a few reasons why the Hotel Zone of Cancun maybe the right place for you. Contact me today with any questions you may have about this area, or any other. I am here to help you plan your
home. Plus, there are many great restaurant options here, some even located right on the water. Don’t forget to check out all the amazing watersports that this area has to offer. Parasailing, surf school, catamaran cruises and snorkeling are all available close by. You name it and it’s more than likely available here. Maybe just sitting on the beach, under your umbrella with a cold drink is what you are after, and that’s fine too. You can do as much or as little as you like. The choice is up to you.

Lisa and her family volunteer to help many organizations in Spring Creek and Elko including 4H and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Elko. As the current board chair for the Club, which she has served on for many years, she raises tens of thousands of dollars to help ensure the youth, especially those who need the Club most reach their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. She gives selflessly to those she has never met to ensure they have opportunities and we’re inspired by all that she does with no expectation for anything in return. Very rarely do you find people with such a large heart which she has passed down to her children Macey and Sidney Reed.” Lisa moved from Colorado to Elko after she graduated High school. Her parents moved to Elko so her father could do some ranching. Lisa would visit every summer to work as a summer student

and attended UNR where she met the love of her life Jake Reed “The water guy”. Jake grew up in Elko and Lisa said “Of all the people I could have met on that huge Reno campus it was him, it was like it was meant to be and I was meant to live in Elko.” Lisa and Jake have been married for 16 years. Lisa is a CPA (Certified public accountant) and has owned her own accounting practice for over 12 years specializing in QuickBooks consulting and tax and small business accounting. I asked Lisa what motivates her to devote so much of her personal time to all of the organizations she does and she said, “I see the greater good in the outcome of it all. I see the need for 4-H and for Boy’s and Girl’s club. It’s like a second home to some kids. These clubs make a huge impact and there is such a huge need for them.” Lisa said what these groups provide for our youth continue to feed her passion to volunteer. Lisa is one of those individuals that is always there to lend a helping hand. Whether it be soccer, clogging,

or horseback riding she is there to support her children and the organizations they are involved in and our great community. Lisa’s daughter was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, so don’t be surprised if you see Lisa taking on another non-profit adventure. “Elko is such a unique place, it is different than other city’s I’ve lived in. It’s amazing. When someone is in need in our community, we pull together. It motivates me and makes me constantly think ‘How can I make a change?’ Elko just brings that out of you.” Lisa, it is generous people like you that are constantly willing to volunteer that make Elko a better place. Without volunteers like you, wonderful programs like Boys and Girls club and 4-H could not continue on. What you do is priceless and makes the world of a difference to our youth. We are so grateful for all that you do and continue to take on! Thank you for never saying no, you are a magnificent Good Neighbor!

Our Pets are Sweet Enough Already:
The Dangers of Chocolate & Xylitol Contributed by Tessa Sustacha, DVM
Dogs are infamous for their less than discriminating taste in foods. With chocolate in particular they appear as powerless to resist as we are. The components of chocolate that make it toxic to dogs and cats are caffeine and theobromine, which fall into a class of drugs called methylxanthines. These are the same ingredients that make chocolate a stimulant to people. Dogs and cats simply are more sensitive to their effects. Where people might experience a feeling of alertness or jitters, dogs and cats experience signs ranging from vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, elevated heart rate, heart rhythm abnormalities and even death. In terms of toxicity, not all chocolates are created equal. Different forms of chocolate have different levels of theobromine with different corresponding risk of toxic effects. As a rule of thumb, the more bitter the chocolate, the more likely to cause a problem. Baker’s chocolate, cocoa powder and dark chocolate are the most potent and dangerous forms. Baker’s chocolate is approximately 7 times more toxic than milk chocolate. The effects are also related to a dog’s weight, so smaller dogs are more at risk. If your 70 pound Labrador eats a single Hershey’s kiss, you are probably ok. If your 5 pound Chihuahua eats a bar of dark chocolate,

it’s time to get the keys and head to the veterinary hospital. For anything in between, just call your veterinarian. Let them know how much chocolate and what kind so that they can determine if there is significant risk. The hallmark of treatment is decontamination of the stomach, and the earlier the treatment is initiated, the more effective. Most dogs will be made to vomit as soon as they arrive at the hospital. Further treatment depends on the amount ingested and if the animal is showing clinical signs of toxicity. Now that we have fully vilified chocolate, what about other candy? Xylitol, a common sugar substitute is also very toxic to our pets. Xylitol is a naturally occurring substance that is widely used as a sugar substitute. Chemically, it is a sugar alcohol that is commercially extracted from corn fibers, trees and vegetable material. It is used in sugarless gums, candies, mints, cough drops, baked goods, cough syrup, children’s vitamins and toothpastes. Make sure that these products are stored safely, out of the reach of pets. Do not share any food that may contain Xylitol with your pets. Only use pet toothpastes for pets never use human toothpastes. Xylitol is estimated to be 100 times more toxic than chocolate to pets.
This Valentine’s Day it may be tempting to buy something for your sweet furry friend but please make sure that the treat is dog or cat appropriate. Large boxes of chocolates and sweets may be perfect for us but can be very toxic to our pets.

If ingested by a pet, Xylitol mimics the effects of sugar and causes the body to release insulin. This causes the blood sugar levels in the body to plummet and can result severe hypoglycemia which causes collapse, seizures and death. The toxin can also have delayed effects on the liver and some patients can go into liver failure up to 48 hours later. In smaller dogs, as little as a single piece of gum can cause toxicity. Symptoms of Xylitol toxicity develop rapidly, usually within 15-30 minutes if consumption. Signs include: vomiting, weakness, depression/lethargy, trouble walking, tremors, seizures, and coma. Fast and aggressive treatment is critical to reverse any toxic effects and to prevent liver damage. Treatment includes sugar supplementation, IV fluids and liver protectants. So remember pet friendly treats only this Valentine’s Day! If you suspect that your pet may have ingested chocolate or any product that could contain Xylitol, call your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline (800-2136680) immediately! The earlier we treat the better chance of a good long term outcome.
