Edward Weston (1886 – 1958) Edward Henry Weston was a 20th century American photographer. He has been called “one of the most innovative and influential American photographers…” and “one of the masters of 20th century photography.” Over the course of his 40 year career, Weston photographed an increasingly expansive set of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, nudes, portraits, genre scenes and even whimsical parodies. Weston developed a quintessentially American, and specially Californian, approach to modern photography. In 1937, he was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship. Weston was born in Highland Park, Illinois and moved to California when he was 21. In 1911, Weston opened “The Little Studio” in Tropico, CA. His sister later asked him why he opened his studio in Tropico rather than in the nearby metropolis of Los Angeles, and he replied, “Sis, I’m going to make my name so famous that it won’t matter
where I live.” Weston lived up to his word, winning prizes in national competitions, publishing several photographs and writing articles for magazines such as Photo-Era and American Photography. Weston knew he wanted to be a photographer from an early age. Initially, his work was typical of the soft focus pictorialism that was popular at the time. Within a few years, however, he abandoned that style and went on to be one of the foremost champions of highly detailed photographic images. In 1947, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and he stopped photographing soon thereafter. He spent the remaining ten years of his life overseeing the printing of more than 1,000 of his most famous images. Donated by Earl and Genevieve Frantzen, the Northeastern Nevada Museum is honored to have a number of Weston’s portfolio works on permanent display.
Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) Ansel Easton Adams was an American photographer and environmentalist, best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West, especially in Yosemite National Park. Adams began playing piano at age 12 and, although he ultimately gave up music for photography, the piano brought substance, discipline and structure to his frustrating and erratic youth. Moreover, the careful training and exacting craft required of a musician profoundly informed his visual artistry. His first photographs were published in 1921 and Best’s Studio began selling his Yosemite prints the following year. His early photos already showed careful composition and sensitivity to tonal balance. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those to whom he taught the system. The Zone System forever changed the art of photography.

Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham, which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art’s department of photography. In the course of his 60-year career, he received numerous titles, accolades, and honors. Most notably, in 1989, Jimmy Carter awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Adams died at the age of 82 from cardiovascular disease. John Szarkowsi states in the introduction to Ansel Adams: Classic Images, “The love that Americans poured out for the work and person of Ansel Adams during his old age, and that they have continued to express with undiminished enthusiasm since his death, is an extraordinary phenomenon, perhaps even unparalleled in our country’s response to a visual artist.” Today, Ansel Adams is still known as the most famous American photographer of all time. The museum owns a rare collection of Ansel Adams’ Portfolio One photographs, also donated by Earl and Genevieve Frantzen.

Directions 1. Heat a saute pan over medium high heat. Combine 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of oil. Season Top Sirloin with a pinch of salt and pepper on each side. When the oil and butter blend begin to foam add the steak. Sear the meat by cooking it for about 3 minutes on each side. Remove and set aside on a serving plate. (Cook longer for Well Done) 2. Add to saute pan, the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Add shallot, and loosen the brown bits on the bottom of the pan. Add mushroom and cook for about 2 minutes, then add flour and combine thoroughly. Add marsala wine and reduce by half. Add Beef Broth and parsley. Heat until sauce consistency and add salt and pepper to taste. Top steak with sauce and enjoy with your favorite side dish.

We hope you’re already enjoying the grill this summer and find yourself rediscovering a few of your favorite recipes. But, are you ready to add new techniques and recipes to your grilling repertoire? We’ve found a few great chicken recipes ready for your grate - they’re keepers!
Choose a good bird – try a whole bird
Which bird is best for grilling?
We’ve become so accustomed to buying and cooking pre-cut chicken parts, that choosing and preparing a whole chicken may be a bit puzzling. There are many good reasons, however, to choose a whole chicken more often:
For grilling, choose a “broiler” or “fryer.” These terms refer to chickens that are about 7 weeks old weighting 2.5-4.5 pounds. You’ll find them more tender and an easy size to manage on the grill. This is one situation where bigger is not necessarily better.
1: W hole chickens are much less expensive than chicken parts – often half the cost.
2: L ight and dark meat portions offer wonderful differences in flavor.
3: C hicken cooked with the skin on tends to retain moisture better.

Locally source your chickens Seek out local sources for your chickens. Local farmers are often the best sources for fresh, naturally-raised chickens. Local sourcing also means your chicken has used the minimum amount of resources in getting to your table. Your purchases support the local food economy helping to ensure the future availability of local food.
When is it done? An average 4-pound chicken will roast in mediumhigh heat, (350-375 F) in about an hour. The best way to check for doneness is with an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest portion of the chicken between the thigh and the breast; it should register 165F. A thermometer allows the chicken to be at its best – neither raw and undercooked, or dry and overcooked. Or, check that when the chicken’s thickest portion is pierced, the juices run clear. Another indication of doneness, though less definitive, is if the leg of the bird moves easily when wiggled about. We call it “shaking hands with the bird!”
Check the label All chickens at your grocer are inspected, though the assignment of “grades” by a processor is voluntary. When raising chickens, no hormones are ever allowed according to law. Antibiotics are allowed, but not near the time of processing. During processing, chickens are cooled either by air, or in cold water. If cooled in water, some of that water is retained in the chicken inflating the purchase weight. Also, be wary of birds that have been “improved” with a brine solution. While brine solutions help make meat tender, they are a hidden source of sodium, and, again, may significantly inflate the purchase weight and cost.
Beer-Can Chicken – Make it a meal This method of grilling chicken uses indirect heat over a medium-high grill, it’s the rough equivalent of roasting a whole chicken in a 350-375 F oven. These grilling conditions are perfect for throwing some whole potatoes on the grill at the same time and rounding out the meal. Wash the potatoes well, pierce them with a knife to provide an escape route for steam, and wrap well in aluminum foil. Rotate the potatoes a couple of times during the grilling process. The potatoes should be done at the same time as the chicken. While the chicken is resting….Add some vegetables to the grill. The whole chicken, like
most grilled meats, benefits from 5-10 minutes of resting prior to carving. Use this time to your advantage and place thick sliced chunks of seasonal vegetables on the hot grill in a grill wok or on a grill mat.
Vertical Roasting The real culinary term for roasting chicken with a beer can is vertical roasting. This technique offers an infusion of moisture into the roasting process that helps to keep the cooked chicken moist. Prep the bird with a good dry rub of your choice reaching under the skin with some of the spices and/or butter. As great as a can might be, we prefer a vertical roaster specifically designed for the task; they have several advantages while being inexpensive to acquire. Most vertical roasters feature a drip pan that keeps flame-ups to a minimum, a container that can hold cider, wine, or other liquids, and a more tailored and secure structure for the chicken to “sit” upon. With a vertical roaster, greater stability and versatility are added to the process whether grilling or oven-roasting a bird. We probably don’t need to say this, but use a vertical roaster or only beverages in cans; do not use glass bottles on the grill or in the oven for this task.
Beer-Can Chicken 2-4 Servings
Spice rub (optional), store-bought or use the Ultimate Dry Rub (below) 1 chicken, 3- to 4-lb. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 12-oz. can of beer, half full SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: A foil baking pan (for drip pan) Prepare grill for indirect heat with drip pan, building a medium-low fire in a charcoal grill or heating a gas grill to medium. Beer-Can Chicken continued Apply your favorite spice rub, if desired, under and on the skin of the chicken. Season with salt and pepper. Place the chicken on an open beer can so that the can is inside the cavity. Place upright on grill. Grill, covered, over drip pan until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165°F, 45 minutes to 1 hour).
Variations on a Theme: Beer-Can Chicken
The Ultimate Dry Rub Makes 1/3 cup
Spanish
Make a big batch of this tasty all-purpose rub (it’ll keep for up to 3 months) and it will pay you back in smoky dividends all summer long.
Rub a mixture of extra-virgin olive oil, minced garlic, and smoked paprika (use the Spanish version, Pimentón de La Vera), under the skin, in the chicken’s cavity, and all over the outside of the bird. Then tuck paper-thin slices of Spanish chorizo sausage under the skin.
Creole Add hot pepper sauce and a few rosemary and thyme sprigs to the half-full beer can. Then rub the bird all over with a blend of melted butter, Creole seasoning, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce (don’t forget the inside).
Asian Make a mixture of toasted sesame oil, reducedsodium soy sauce, honey, minced ginger, garlic, Chinese five-spice powder and crushed red pepper flakes; rub all over the chicken. Once the bird is done cooking, sprinkle with chopped scallions and cilantro. Serve with hoisin sauce.
2 tsp. whole black peppercorns 2 tsp. yellow mustard seeds 1 tsp. cumin seeds 3 Tbsp. paprika 2 Tbsp. brown sugar 2 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. celery seeds 1 tsp. garlic powder 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper Stir peppercorns, mustard seeds, and cumin seeds in a small dry skillet over medium heat until toasted, about 2 minutes. Let cool. Put into a spice mill with remaining ingredients and pulse until finely ground.

Cilantro-Lime Chicken Thighs
Choosing Thighs Thighs are an underrated chicken part, (and in our opinion, wings are overrated). Thighs feature dark meat with a higher fat content and are considered to have more flavor. The higher fat content keeps the meat moist during and after grilling. Thighs tend to be less expensive cut of chicken – perfect for feeding a crowd.
Safe Handling of Chicken Like all raw meat and juices, chicken holds potential for foodbourne illnesses. Adequade cooking to 165F will kill any bacteria present. The real task when handling raw chicken arises from cross contamination. This means if other uncooked food encounters raw chicken or its juices, the spread and development of bacteria is possible.

The lastest controversy in food safety circles centers around the conundrum about whether or not to wash or rinse a chicken before cooking. Julia Child recommends rinsing the chicken and patting it dry, but current culinary and food safety advice recommends not washing the bird or parts. The washing process potentially distributes the offending bacteria around the sink and kitchen. Instead, remove the chicken from its packaging and place directly in the baking pan. If necessary, use a paper towel to wipe away any loose innards left on or in the bird.

Cilantro-Lime Chicken Thighs 8 Servings A combination of freshly squeezed lime and orange juice is the base of this bright and rusticfeeling dish. Look for limes with smooth skin that feel heavy for their size; both are good indicators that the limes are juicy. Serve the chicken on a large platter with the charred corn and scallions so guests can help themselves.
1 cup fresh lime juice 2/3 cup fresh orange juice 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 2 tsp. hot pepper sauce salt and freshly ground black pepper 16 large skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs 16 scallions, trimmed 8 ears of corn, husked Whisk both juices, cilantro, 1/2 cup oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, and hot pepper sauce in a medium bowl. Season marinade to taste with salt and pepper. Place chicken thighs in a large resealable plastic bag. Place scallions and corn in 1 or 2 extra-large resealable plastic bags. Divide marinade equally between bags; seal bags and turn chicken thighs and corn to coat. Chill chicken, corn, and scallions, turning bags occasionally, for 4 hours. Build a medium-low fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to medium. Brush grill grate with oil. Remove chicken and vegetables from marinade; discard marinade. Grill chicken, turning occasionally and rearranging on the grill for even cooking, until charred and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165°F, about 25 minutes. Grill scallions and corn until charred on all sides, about 6 minutes for scallions and 13 minutes for corn. Transfer chicken, scallions, and corn to a platter.

Chicken Under a Brick with Grilled Avocados and Chiles 6-8 Servings This straightforward preparation can serve as the foundation for any number of sauces or accompaniments, such as the fresh, colorful side dish featured below.
1 chicken, 3-1/2- to 4-lb. 1 Tbsp. kosher salt, more as needed 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp. finely grated lemon zest 3 Tbsp. fresh rosemary leaves Grilled Avocados and Chiles SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: A brick wrapped in foil or a cast-iron skillet wrapped in foil. Open the chicken and place on a work surface, skin side up. Using your palms, firmly press on the breastbone to flatten the breast. Season chicken all over with 1 Tbsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. black pepper, and cayenne. Place in a baking dish; rub with 1 Tbsp. oil, sprinkle with lemon zest, and scatter rosemary over. Let stand at room temperature for 1 hour. Build a medium-low fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to medium. Brush grill grate with oil Place chicken, skin side down, on grill and place a foil-wrapped brick or heavy skillet on top of the chicken to weigh it down. Cook until skin is crispy and golden brown, about 15 minutes. Using tongs, set brick aside. Turn chicken, cover grill, and cook for 10 more minutes. Continue cooking and turning chicken every 10 minutes, covering grill between turns, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 165°F, about 50 minutes total. Transfer to a cutting board; let chicken rest for 10 minutes (resting will make for juicier meat). Serve with Grilled Avocados and Chiles (below).

Basque wineS As we welcome our dancing, wood chopping, bread making friends into the Elko community for the 52nd Annual Basque Festival it seems only appropriate to suggest some of regions tastiest wines to compliment the cultural cuisine. Basque wines, grown in three different DO’s, Designation of Origins, of the northeastern corner of Spain are known for their perseverance against the phylloxera plague of the 19th Century. Wine makers did everything within their power to maintain production during this time and it paid off. Txakoli (pronounced Chok-oh-lee) is one of two prominent categories of wine produced here, it is a style of wine complimentary to the fishing industry and many of the traditional Basque dishes. White Txakoli is the most common variety, although there are small productions of Red and Rose. In 2001, less than one thousand cases of Txakoli were imported

With round bodies, prominent ears, no visible tail and weighing just 5 ounces, American pikas (Ochotona princeps ) are certainly cute. They are the smallest members of the rabbit family (seven to eight inches long) and despite their cuddly appearance they have to be extremely tough. Pikas survive their entire lives in alpine terrain, the windswept land above the tree line where temperatures rarely get above freezing. They are an ice age relic that is facing an uncertain future. They can die when exposed to continual temperatures as mild as 80 degrees F. In order to survive the heat of summer, they descend into the cool rock piles at the base of mountain slopes. As global temperatures rise they are abandoning lower-elevation talus slopes and are migrating higher into the mountains. The fear is that they will eventually have nowhere to go to escape the heat of summer. In the Great Basin, pikas already are disappearing. According to National Park Service biologist Erik Beever, pikas have recently disappeared from 8 of 25 mountainous locations where they were documented in the early 1900s. The finding represents ‘one of the first contemporary examples of a North American mammal exhibiting a rapid shift in distribution due to climate.’ There are 36 subspecies of Ochotona princeps, one of them being the Ruby Mountain Pika (Ochotona princeps nevadensis). Colonies of this subspecies can be found in the talus slopes in Lamoille Canyon in areas such as Island Lake and Lamoille Lake.
Pikas eat hay, grass, leaves, flowers, bark, roots, and fruit. Like rabbits and hares, pikas eat their own soft, vitamin B–rich droppings to help digest the cellulose they consume. Pika do not hibernate during winter so they spend the summer months gathering grasses and wildflowers to store in “haypiles” for use during the winter. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They have been known to make over 100 foraging trips in a single day. They lay the collected plants out in the sun where the sun’s heat dries the plants so they do not get moldy. The plants are then stored in the pika’s den for use in the winter. When forced underground due to high summer temperatures they are able to gather less food for the coming winter. American pikas are often heard before they are seen. Pikas help protect themselves by living in colonies. They live near other pikas but are very territorial over their den and its surrounding area. They make territorial calls to defend the boundaries between each pika neighbor. But if threatened by predators, pikas work as a team, making repeated, high-pitched calls to warn each other. a look back in memorial January 9, 2001 started off like any other day. Folks rose from sleep while others were just bedding down for their rest. The city greeted the new day with renewed hope and a sense of adventure. Neighbors said hello to neighbors, children concentrated on enjoying winter break, businesses opened their doors. It was like any other day. But it wasn’t like any other day. Thomas Scott, an Elkoan for many years and underground miner, was just 30 years old when he was lost in a tragic accident. Tom was not only a loving husband and father, he was also an active member of the community. He left a wife, son, and many friends asking why. In the wake of the tragedy, we are all reminded there are many things out of our control. The one thing we can do is love those around us, be kind to strangers, and celebrate life. For fifteen years a group of surviving family members, friends and volunteers has been doing just that; celebrating life, all the while making a difference in the lives of people in northeastern Nevada. Whether supporting other community service non-profits, helping young adults pursue their dreams of a college education or supporting the growth and participation of children through a junior golf program, the citizens who assist and support the annual Thomas Scott Memorial Golf Tournament are the very definition of volunteers. The Thomas Scott Foundation has raised funds for individuals and other organizations that demonstrate its mission statement, “To further academic and athletic opportunities for the youth of Elko County.” Proceeds from this event have helped support a diverse spectrum of people in an effort to make the communities in northeastern Nevada better. The number of individuals and non-profit organizations the TSF has helped is many with its donation now exceeding over $125,000 since its inception. The Thomas Scott Foundation continues to contribute to Great Basin College by means of a memorial scholarship to students in an effort to help these young adults become more effective citizens through higher education. These students represent the future leaders of our community, state, and nation and the foundation feels that investing in

them now means we all reap the benefits later. An investment in our future cannot begin too early in life and that is why the TSF has contributed to both the Spring Creek and Ruby View golf courses’ Junior Golf Programs. TSF volunteers have helped raise more than $30,000 to assist children participating in these programs that they might not otherwise be able to afford. The donations are used for equipment and other resources associated with the programs. The programs use golf as a teaching tool for sportsmanship, the role of citizenship and the camaraderie that comes with athletic endeavors. By taking the time to nurture young people and make a positive influence on their lives now, we cultivate proactive citizens and the next generation of volunteers. Funds generated through the generosity of volunteers and those participating in the tournaments have helped other organizations as well. Donations over the years from the TSM have benefited the efforts of the Silver Stage Players, Elko & Spring Creek Boys Little League, Elko County Girls Softball & Elko Jr. Football, the Cinderella Scholarship Pageant, among many others. Join our TSF family in celebrating our 15th birthday by attending the Thomas Scott Memorial Golf Tournament, Saturday July 18, at the Ruby View Golf Course. Registration begins at 6:30 am with an 8 am “shotgun” start. Cost is $40 per person and includes a barbeque-style lunch. Cart and green fees are not included. Credit cards will be accepted the day of the tournament only, cart and green fees not applicable. Tournament proceeds benefit the Thomas Scott Memorial Fund helping support organizations that demonstrate the TSF’s mission statement, “To further academic and athletic opportunities for the youth of Elko County.” The Thomas Scott Foundation will continue to conduct its golf tournament well into the future. It has a long-term commitment to supporting the Ruby View Junior Golf Program and other deserving organizations. The tournament volunteers wish nothing less than to make a difference in the lives of fellow citizens of northeastern Nevada and to make the communities in Elko County better through the process all while remember the tournament’s namesake.

“Something wicked this way comes!” Help the Silver Stage Players celebrate Season 2015 with the third installment of the Bard in the Yard series, Bard in the Yard 3 – Beyond the Veil. This unique production features excerpts from the works of William Shakespeare performed in the intimate outdoor setting of the Duncan LittleCreek Gallery backyard. Conceived by director Frank L. Sawyer in 2011, the Bard in the Yard project explores common themes in Shakespeare’s plays. Join us on a journey of the macabre and the mischievous, the weird and the whimsical as we explore what lies beyond the tapestry of human knowledge and existence. Is there more to life than just us? How can we possibly predict what will happen when the worlds of the supernatural and humankind intersect? Performances are July 16-18, and 22-25 beginning at 7 PM in the backyard of the Duncan LittleCreek Gallery located at 518 Commercial Street in Elko Nevada. The show includes passages from Hamlet, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, and Macbeth. Tickets are only $7 and are available at the door. Alright… it’s time for some real talk here. Summer in Northeastern Nevada has found us, and as history ALWAYS repeats itself, so have all of the latest diets…the best weightloss programs…the newest technology to help you reach your goal (FitBit-ers…I mean YOU!)…and not to mention, the most grueling/intense/sweat-inducing regimens to help you tone down and firm up. And don’t get me wrong, all of these are great, and there are many options available to find one that fits each of us uniquely. But…did you know that there is also the same emphasis in veterinary medicine on your pet’s physical appearance and health?! The 21st century has been revolutionized by the huge advances in human medicine, which in turn intensely influences the field of veterinary medicine as well. A huge part of what veterinary professionals do in daily exams is not only assessing your pet’s teeth, eyes, ears, etc. We also take into account your pet’s age and breeding, and how those numbers dictate their body score. Just as the case is in people, the extra pounds your pet is toting to the beach increases the workload of the heart and lungs, as well as the musculoskeletal structure of your pet. Diabetes, congestive heart failure, joint injuries, arthritis, and shortened life span are all potential issues that our voluptuous companions could experience sooner than later. Now, understand me here. The call to arms is not an intense regimen of daily 5-mile walks, and only veggie/water diets. That extra 5 minutes every day of tossing the ball, or playing in the sprinklers, or chasing the stuffed mouse around the house does WONDERS in a small way. Feeding ONLY their food, and cutting back on the
Greenies/jerky treats/your dinner leftovers, is also just that little bit that goes a long way. Substitute the jerky treats you give to your food motivated companion with carrot sticks, or snap peas. Try to portion their food according to the weight and age requirements on the food bag, and set aside a small amount every day to use as the treats. And, just as you will hear human conversation flow both ways… “Oh, you only just started!”, or, “Muscle weighs more than flabby fat!”, or (my personal favorite), “Go by how you feel, not by how you THINK you should feel.” Your pet is not going to miraculously drop those unnecessary pounds. They will gradually lose the weight, and you will start to notice the reappearance of that cute little waistline, or the slight feeling of the ribs and backbone when you’re giving them some quality TLC. Compare the new Fluffy to the old Fluffy, and let the new, energetic outlook on life do the talking for you. Don’t lose heart… not all of us can look like Marilyn Monroe on a Cali beach…not even your pet! Katrina Cumming is homegrown and raised in Northeastern Nevada. She received her A.A.S in Veterinary Technology from the College of Southern Idaho, and practices as a licensed veterinary technician at the Elko Veterinary Clinic. They are both on our campus fulltime and be able to provide care for all of our residents.

Dr. De Guzman brings in a wealth of medical experience being board certified in Internal Medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine) since 2001 and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. De Guzman is originally from the Philippines where he finished his medical degree from the University of Santo Thomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. He then completed an Internal Medicine residency program at Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons/Harlem Hospital Center in New York, NY and had the advantage of a one year fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, MO. Dr. De Guzman is not new to the Elko medical community, having worked in the Carlin and Elko community health centers, and at Vitality Center and the local hospital. Dr. De Guzman has had the privilege of mentoring medical students and Internal Medicine residents as he is Assistant

A Winter’s Tale Nevada has been suffering for at least three weeks with a roaring heat wave and I must admit that I -- like you, I’m sure -have done my share of serious carping about it. But this week, I am dropping my usual cynical veneer and asking you to look on the bright side. Because there is one. BECAUSE IT ISN’T WINTER. Perhaps the following little tale will remind you of why, right now, you should cease your infernal complaining about the heat and be reminded anew just how lucky you are: Remember that time back in February when you highcentered the truck on that big ol’ berm of snow out there in the middle of nowhere and you had to get out in subfreezing conditions and attempt to dislodge the rig? And then the wind roared up to gale force and whipped drifting snow against your face and down inside your coat and you couldn’t budge the truck even an inch because it was pretty much dug into the berm? So then you got back in the truck and turned on the heater fullblast to thaw yourself out, except you noticed a really bad burning-rubber smell and you suddenly figured out that the fanbelt was going -- and fast? So then you swore really, really loud and cows started wandering over to see what the deal was? So then you figured you’d better use the cell phone and call for some assistance and you suddenly got a very clear picture of your cell phone lying there on the little stand right there next to the door so there would be no way you could forget it? And you forgot it? And so then you got out of the truck again and stared into the faces of the cows for awhile, as if seeking some sort of bovine solution to your dilemma? And they were no help at all? So then you yelled “@#$%!” to nobody in particular and you began figuring out the distance back to the main road because it was becoming pretty obvious that unless you got out of there real soon it could be a problem because it was starting to get dark? And then all those slate-gray clouds rolled in and it started to snow? And how the snow was pretty light at first, but then got extremely heavy to the point where you couldn’t see the cows anymore so you had to get back in the truck and you turned on the heater but all you got was that burning-rubber smell again? And so then you said “@#$%!” again and banged the dashboard and hurt your hand really, really bad? And so then the snow subsided a little bit to the point you realized the sun had set and you figured you’d better get out and hoof it and you estimated it was only a mile or so back to the main road and so then you took off and it almost immediately got pitch-dark and you
heard coyotes baying in the distance so you decided maybe you ought to just stay with the truck but when you turned around to go back you twisted your ankle and you had to sort of just gingerly limp back and when you grabbed the door handle of the truck you suddenly realized that when you hit your hand on the dashboard you might have just gone and broken the sucker? And so then you got back into the truck and started figuring out which hurt more, your hand or your ankle? And you decided it was your ankle because you reached down and it had swelled up to the approximate circumference of a loaf of French bread? And so then you just sort of disgustedly laid back in the seat and listened to the coyotes and then you saw the area gradually light up and you realized that those were headlights coming and you thought “Yes!” and happily banged your hand on the dashboard and you said “@#$%!” again and now you were completely positive that you had broken it for sure and you hopped out of the truck to flag down the oncoming vehicle and you landed on the foot attached to the monstrous, throbbing ankle which probably now was pretty much broken as well? And you waved down the vehicle and the driver stopped and said he would be happy to give you a ride into town and you were so relieved and happy and you hopped (painfully) into the passenger seat and everything went really well until about two minutes into the trip when the driver began telling you the story of Jesus and how Elvis was Jesus’s messenger on earth and if you play “Jailhouse Rock” backwards there are subliminal messages about Salvation? And then you got home and your spouse was mad at you even though you were cold and injured because you had failed to buy milk and -- more importantly -- beer? A little ol’ heat wave doesn’t seem so bad now, does it? As the King might say, compared to the chill of February, July’s just a hunka burnin’ love.
