T R A RO C K Celebrating the Human Spirit of People Past From the northernmost wildlife refuge to the southern tip of creosote bush country, the special exhibit Nevada Rock Art is itself a testimonial to better than two decades of exploring and experiencing the Silver State’s diverse landscape. Peter Goin has produced a stunning series of eighteen images illustrating petroglyphs and pictographs. These photographs are themselves artifacts of fieldwork conducted on the back roads, valleys, drainages, and mountain ridges of Nevada. The show debuted on May 24 and is scheduled to run through August 30 in the Halleck Bar Gallery at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko. Goin is a professor of Art (Photography/Videography) at the University of Nevada (Reno). He received a BA in Political Science from Hamline University (Saint Paul, Minnesota) and a MA and MFA in Photography from the University of Iowa (Iowa City). His photographs have been exhibited in more than fifty museums nationally and internationally. In addition, he was the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Fellowships. At the turn of the new century, Goin was awarded the Governor’s Millennium Award for Excellence in the Arts. Among his many works as an author is one specifically tied to this exhibit: Nevada Rock Art (2009), published by Black Rock Institute Press.
The Northeastern Nevada Museum is located at 1515 Idaho St in Elko. Regular public hours are 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Tuesday - Saturday, and 1:005:00 pm on Sunday. For more information, please call (775) 738-3418 or email director@museumelko.org. W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

Fresh Red Raspberry Crostata Makes 8-10 servings
Both sweet and tangy sensations burst on the scene when fresh raspberries hit the taste buds. This crostata is just one of many perfect ways to enjoy raspberry season. It features a simple crust with just a hint of sweetness included. Serve this crostata with a scoop of your very best vanilla bean ice cream. PÂTE BRISÉE CRUST INGREDIENTS: 2-1/2 C all-purpose flour 1 T sugar 1-1/2 t Kosher salt 1 C unsalted butter (2 sticks), well chilled 4-6 T ice water
CRUST TOPPING: 1 egg for egg wash 1 T coarse sugar for crust topping RASPBERRY FILLING: 5 C fresh, red raspberries 3 T sugar 1 T cornstarch DIRECTIONS: The crust may be mixed by hand or with a food processor. MIXING WITH A FOOD PROCESSOR:
1b. PLACE the flour, sugar, and salt in the bowl of the food processor. PULSE a few times to evenly distribute the sugar and salt. 2b. CUT the butter into 1/2-inch cubes. Use a little of the flour mixture to keep the butter pieces from sticking together. CHILL the cut butter cubes for 15 minutes.

3b. PREPARE the ice water by filling a small bowl with ice cubes and adding water. STIR until the water is well-chilled. 4b. PLACE the butter cubes in the food processor with the flour mixture. PULSE 4-5 times to cut the butter into the flour. The flour-butter mixture will be coarse with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining. (Resist the urge to keep pulsing.) 5b. ADD 2 tablespoons of the ice water by sprinkling on top of the flour and butter mixture. PULSE 2-3 times. CONTINUE adding ice water by the tablespoon pulsing after each addition until a rough dough is formed. Test the dough by pinching together – if it holds together, enough water has been added. If it crumbles apart, add another tablespoon of water. (Avoid adding too much water or pulsing too much.) 6a. REMOVE the dough from the work bowl gathering it into a rough ball. FLATTEN the dough ball into a disk about a half-inch in thickness and wrap in plastic wrap.
FORMING THE CROSTATA:
7. CHILL the wrapped dough disk for an hour or overnight. 8. REMOVE the dough from the refrigerator when ready to bake the crostata and let set for 10 minutes on the countertop while mixing the filling. 9. BLEND the cornstarch and sugar, then sprinkle over the raspberries. Gently toss the fruit to distribute the mixture. Set aside while finishing crust prep. 9. ROLL the dough on a lightly floured surface into a 16-inch rough circle with about a 1/8- to 3/16-inch thickness. 10. TRANSFER the rolled dough to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. The sides of the dough may temporarily drape over the edges. 11. PLACE the prepared raspberry filling in the center of the crust circle and spread into an even layer leaving a 2 to 2-1/2 inch perimeter of crust free. 12. FOLD the edges of the crust over the filling. 13. BEAT an egg with 1 teaspoon of water in a small bowl. BRUSH the egg wash on the crust’s surfaces. SPRINKLE with coarse sugar. CHILL the crostata in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes while the oven preheats. 14. BAKE the crostata in a 400° oven for 20-25 minutes, checking after 15 minutes. The crust will develop a lovely golden brown color and the filling will be bubbling and slightly thickened. The filling will continue to thicken as is cools. 15. SERVE warm or cooled to room temperature with a side of vanilla bean ice cream, or sweetened whipped cream.

Making Great Crusts Rustic Pies, Like Crostatas and Galettes, feature a lower ratio of filling to crust than in a classic, deep dish, summer fruit pie. With the crust playing a greater role, it better taste good! CROSTATA OR GALETTE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Both terms refer to a rustic version of pastries made with a free-form crust. The term “crostata,” is the Italian version, while “galette” is a French description covering a broad range of flat, round pastries. Shortcrusts may have varied quantities of flour, fat and liquid, but all follow a similar technique when mixing and preparing. Butter is cut coarsely into the dry ingredients and liquid added to bind the mix together. TIP: Keep things chilled from start to finish. Use well-chilled butter at the start. Chill the dough after mixing, before rolling out. The crust may also benefit from a stint in the refrigerator after the pastry is assembled, just prior to baking.
Summer Peach-Almond Galettes Makes 4 individual servings
Sweet, ripe peaches are nearly synonymous with summer! These amazing fruits develop their sweet flavor and tangy taste on petite trees over several months – a test of patience amply rewarded when picking time arrives! This recipe makes four individual galettes, or one larger rustic pie. The crust is sweeter and richer than a typical pie crust – we think you’ll love it! PÂTE SUCRÉE CRUST INGREDIENTS: 3 C all-purpose flour 1 C sugar 2 t Kosher salt 1 C unsalted butter (2 sticks), well chilled 2 egg yolks 1 t pure vanilla extract 1/2 t almond extract 4-6 T heavy cream
CRUST TOPPING: 2 T flour 2 T sugar 2 T butter 2 T sliced almonds 2 T heavy cream, for brushing on crust 1 T coarse sugar for crust topping

Use a little of the flour mixture to keep from sticking together. CHILL the cut butter cubes for 15 minutes. 3a. PLACE the butter cubes in the flour mixture. Using a simple pastry blender, cut the butter and flour mixture together until a coarse texture is reached with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining. 4a. ADD 2 T of the heavy cream by sprinkling on top of the flour and butter mixture. With a fork, gently toss the mixture. CONTINUE adding cream 1 T at a time tossing after each addition until a rough ball of dough forms. 6a. FLATTEN the dough ball into a 1/2-inch disk and wrap in plastic wrap.
FORMING THE GALETTES:
7. CHILL the wrapped dough for an hour or overnight. 8. REMOVE the dough from the refrigerator when ready to bake the galettes and let set for 10 minutes on the countertop while the filling is mixed. 9. STIR the cornstarch and sugar together, then sprinkle over the fresh peach slices. Gently toss the fruit to distribute the cornstarch/sugar mixture. Set aside while finishing crust preparation. 10. ROLL out one disk of dough into a 8-inch circle, about 3/16-inch in thickness, on a lightly floured surface. Repeat with the remaining three dough pieces. Leave the edges rough or use a plate to cut a neat circle. 11. TRANSFER the rolled dough to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. The sides of the dough may temporarily drape over the edges. 12. PLACE the prepared peach slices in the center of the crust circle arranging the wedges evenly. Leave a 1- to 1-1/2 inch perimeter of crust free of filling. 13. FOLD the edges of the crust over the filling pleating or overlapping as you go. 14. MIX equal parts of flour, sugar and butter (2 T each) together until combined and a crumbly texture is formed. SPRINKLE the crumb mixture and sliced almonds over the exposed fruit.
The crust in these galettes is a Pate Sucree (Paht sue-cray). Also part of the shortcrust pastry family. It’s a rich crust with egg yolks and more sugar added compared to a standard pie crust. In our version, we’ve also added vanilla and almond extracts for additional flavor. The result is a crust that tastes like a delicious shortbread cookie.
Choose peaches that have been tree-ripened if possible. Judge a peach’s ripeness, not by any red blush on the skin, but by the background color of the peach. If a green color dominates, it may have been picked too early, and while it may soften, it will never develop that delicious sweetness that define great summer peaches. Peaches have two seed varieties – the pits may “cling” or be “freestone,” with the former posing a more difficult removal. Peel peaches with a paring knife, or by cutting a small “X” on the bottom, blanching for 30 seconds, plunging into ice water, then peeling.
Preparing Fresh Fruit Fillings
When beautiful fresh fruit is on hand, not much else is needed for creating a delicious pastry filling. In each of the recipes in this newsletter, only a bit of sugar and cornstarch is added. These additions accomplish two key tasks: SUGAR: Adding sugar not only sweetens the fruit slightly, it also promotes the release of juices and softening of the fruit. Thickened juices form the filling encasing the berries in a natural glaze.
15. BRUSH the crust’s surfaces with heavy cream. SPRINKLE with coarse sugar. CHILL the galettes in the refrigerator for 10 minutes while the oven preheats.
THICKENER: The released juices benefit from a little added thickening agent to keep the liquid surrounding the berries instead of running away. A tablespoon of one of these common thickener works just the magic needed:
16. BAKE the galettes in a 400° oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling bubbly and slightly thickened.
CORNSTARCH | TAPIOCA ARROWROOT | FLOUR
17. SERVE with a side of vanilla bean ice cream, or sweetened whipped cream.

Baking Better-Looking Crusts
HOW DO THICKENERS WORK? Long starch molecules characterize each of the noted thickeners. The starch absorbs water as it is heated while also breaking apart. The short chains of water-logged starch form a web resulting in a thickened liquid. The process of thickening begins to occur at 140F, but to fully work its magic, it must reach the boiling point of 212F for a few minutes. During this process, it also loses any raw taste it may have had. When recipes note, “bake until the crust is golden brown and the filling bubbly,” it’s offering instruction regarding the thickener’s need to cook and coagulate.
TIP: To keep clumps of thickener from forming, mix the sugar and thickening powder together before sprinkling on the fruit. Toss with rinsed, well-drained, fresh fruit. Let the mixture set a few minutes so that the sugar and thickener dissolve and the fruit begins to release its juices.
TIP: Fruit pies, rustic or formal, are notorious for
bubbling over during baking. Avoid overfilling the crust, make sure there are no cracks in the crust, and seal the edges well. Despite your best efforts, juices may escape – that’s ok, don’t worry about it. But, do prepare for such an eventuality by lining the baking pan with parchment paper, or using a pan to catch any oven spills.

CREAM CHEESE CRUST INGREDIENTS: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon sugar 1-1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 8 oz. (1 pkg) cream cheese 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), well chilled
CRUST TOPPING: 2 egg whites, beaten 1 tablespoon coarse sugar for crust topping
BLUEBERRY FILLING:
Best Blueberry Hand Pies Makes 6-8 hand pies
One of our favorite ways to celebrate these little nutritional powerhouses is to place them in hand pies. The berries’ diminutive size fit neatly into petite packets. However, to match the blueberries’ magnificence, the crust needs to be just as wonderful. Our answer is a rich crust with a cream cheese base.
2 cups blueberries 3 T sugar 1 T cornstarch
Directions: MIXING BY HAND: 1. MIX the flour, sugar, and salt together in a large bowl with a whisk until evenly distributed.

2. CUT the butter and cream cheese into 1/2-inch cubes. Use a little of the flour mixture to keep the pieces from sticking together. CHILL the cubes for 15 minutes. 3. PLACE the butter and cream cheese cubes in the flour mixture. Using a simple pastry blender, cut the butter, cream cheese, and flour mixture together until a coarse texture is reached with some pea-sized pieces of butter and/or cream cheese remaining. 4. FORM the rough dough into a ball using your hands and a light touch. 5. FLATTEN the dough ball into a disk about a half-inch thick, and wrap in plastic wrap. FORMING THE HAND PIES: 6. CHILL the wrapped dough disk for an hour or overnight. 7. 11. BEAT the egg whites with 2 teaspoons of water, and BRUSH the egg white wash lightly on the perimeter of each bottom circle. 12. SPOON the prepared blueberries into the center of each bottom circle mounding them slightly. Leave about 1/2-inch of the crust clear for sealing. 13. STRETCH the top circles slightly to fit over the mounded blueberries. MATCH the edges of the top crust with the bottom crust pressing them together. CRIMP the edges with fork tines. 14. BRUSH the formed hand pies with the egg white wash. SPRINKLE lightly with sugar if desired. VENT the pies by cutting small slits on the top with the tip of a paring knife in a decorative design of your choosing. (We like a simple star with five small cuts placed in a radiating pattern.) 15. BAKE the hand pies in a 400° oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. 16. SERVE warm or cooled to room temperature.

Lamoille Canyon Nature Trail
- Contributed by Lois K. Ports for Bristlecone Audubon Society -
If you haven’t walked the Nature Trail in Lamoille Canyon yet, you are missing out on a great experience that is for everyone in the family. This is an easy hike of about one mile. The trail head is located half way up Lamoille Canyon on the right side of the road and is well posted. There is some parking alongside the road and the trail starts right off the road. Be sure to pick up the informational brochure which is available that corresponds to the numbered markers along the trial. There are also some trailside benches provided if you prefer to sit and enjoy the solitude. The trail winds its way through quaking aspen, chokecherry and golden currant and takes you down to the creek and then loops back up to your car. This montane woodland provides breeding habitat for many species of birds. As you walk listen for the songs of Audubon’s yellow-rumped Warbler, Western Tanager and Warbling Vireo. Many cavity nesting species utilize the aspen tree which is a soft wooded tree often excavated 36

by woodpeckers such as the Lewis’ Woodpecker and the Red-naped Sapsucker. In turn these cavities are then used by many other species including House Wren, Mountain Chickadee and Tree Swallows. You will also be able to see evidence of the resident population of beavers which use the aspens not only for food but also in the construction of their lodges and dams. Many species of wildflowers make the trail colorful and fragrant. In the deeply shaded areas you will find Western Columbine, Meadow rue, and Geranium growing abundantly. For the observant you can also find diminutive native orchid species mixed in the undergrowth. Along the creek are vibrant patches of Fireweed and Monkeyflower. The larger, showy white Bog-rein Orchid is also found in these areas. In the drier stretches of the trail you will encounter Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany and sagebrush. Flowers in this area include the Arrow-leaf Balsamroot, Indian Paintbrush and Larkspur.
This montane woodland provides breeding habitat for many species of birds.

The Bristlecone Audubon Chapter will be leading a hike along this trail on Saturday, July 16, 2016. We will meet at the trail head at 9:00 a.m. We will first take a leisurely walk along the trail as the leaders, Lois Ports and Ann Haglund help identify and provide some natural history of the birds and plants seen on the trail. After the hike we will proceed to the Terrace’s Picnic area ($5 parking fee required) for our lunch. After lunch, if people are interested we may also drive to Road’s End to check out the wildflowers at that elevation. Wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather (thundershowers are always possible in July), wear sunscreen and bug spray. Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water. Binoculars and cameras are optional. For more information or to arrange carpooling from Elko, contact Lois Ports at ports@frontiernet.net or 775-738-4270.

The Biggest Plays in the Little City
As spring semesters come to a close and summer finally starts to set in one can only expect baseball fields to be full with eager fans. Greater Nevada Field, home of the Triple
A Reno Aces, in the heart of Downtown Reno has seen everything from gymnasts to storm troopers, cows throwing first pitches to what seems like Peter O’Brien’s towering home runs each game. The Reno Aces have been on a hot streak winning six of their last eight games while scoring 74 runs compared to their opponent’s 43 runs. The Aces overall record is now 30 and 28 with a .517 win percentage, making them second in their division only trailing the Tacoma Rainiers that are 34 and 24 on the season with a .589 win percentage.

Peter O’Brien of the Reno Aces has been putting on quite the performance in this eight game home stand going 17-for-35 with five home runs and 20 RBI. O’Brien currently has a batting average of .337 with 17 HRs and 52 RBI. He is currently 10th in the Pacific Coast League in batting average but is leading the league in homeruns and RBI’s. O’Brien was called up to the Major league affiliate the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this season but only had one at-bat that resulted in a strike out. But with numbers like O’Brien’s one
can’t expect him to be playing for the Aces much longer. Only three players in the MLB have more home runs than O’Brien; Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies and Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox who both have 18, and Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles, who has hit 19 already this season. David Ortiz is the only player in the MLB who has more RBI than O’Brien at 54. O’Brien’s .337 batting average also ties Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun for fifth in the MLB in batting average. Although there is a big difference in level of play between leagues (Triple A vs. MLB), Peter O’Brien is definitely becoming the hero in Reno. On June 1, O’Brien went 2-for-5 with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. Then 2 days later on June 3, he went 3-for-5 with 2 home runs. Then on June 4, he went 2-for-4 with another grand slam. The fans went crazy about him on June 4; the Reno Aces had Star Wars night where the players wore special Star Wars themed uniforms that were going to be auctioned off at the end of the game to support the Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. The bids for each jersey began at 100 dollars but each individual jersey had a ‘buy it’ now price of 500 dollars. Before any bids were placed, a fan stepped up and bought O’Brien’s game worn jersey for the price of 500 dollars. Then fans continued to ask specifically for his jersey all night.

But the Reno Aces aren’t the only team from the biggest little city to prove themselves recently. The University of Nevada, Reno’s Club baseball team won the NCBA (National Club Baseball Association) World Series on June 2. This is the first time in team history that they won the Club Baseball World Series. The club team has had a few great seasons in the past but 2016 brought their first World Series birth. The UNR club team finished their regular season going 17-4. Junior, Drew Andary led the nation in batting average at .635 while also leading the nation in home runs hitting 12 in just 21 games. Senior, Nick Kinsman also had a great season leading the nation in RBI at 57 and finished second in home runs behind Andary, hitting 11. Andary also finished second in RBI at 49.
Heading into the World Series Nevada was ranked fifth set to face off fourth ranked Florida State. Not only was Nevada able to hold off the higher ranked Seminoles, they continued to beat the #1 seed Pittsburgh in the next game. Nevada lost their next game to #3 Oregon putting them in the losers bracket to play #3 Oregon again based on tournament rules (Oregon lost their first game of the tournament). But this game Nevada blew out Oregon four to zero, clinching their spot in the World Series game against #2 East Carolina.

VACATION DESTINATION
O'ahu - FOCUS ON -
CONTRIBUTED BY SUE BRADFORD OF JOURNEYS AROUND THE WORLD
Are you planning a Hawaiian vacation anytime soon? Picking the right island for your Hawaiian vacation is very important. Here are some reasons why the island of O’ahu may be right for you. • You want to see the PEARL HARBOR MEMORIAL. The USS Arizona and the battleship Missouri are the most visited tourist attraction in Hawaii. It is one of those locations that you just must see while visiting here. If you are planning a visit these world famous monuments, then you must plan your tour ahead of time. They sell out in advance, so please be aware of that. This year will mark the 75th anniversary of the attack and tours will sell out even faster than normal.

• You plan on spending the day relaxing on and exploring the world famous WAIKIKI BEACH. Located on the southern shore of the island, Waikiki is a beachfront town outside of Honolulu. Filled with wonderful restaurants, great shopping and a very active nightlife, a stop here is a must for any Oahu vacation. Especially for you people watchers. • You want to HIKE to the top of Diamond Head. This is a fairly casual hike of about .75 miles and this trip should take you about 2 hours’ roundtrip. Once at the top of the trail, you will be able to see the entire leeward coast of O’ahu and the view is outstanding and well worth the hike. Take the time out of your busy schedule and take this hike, you will be happy you did. • You want to EXPLORE the islands north coast. This side of the island is not as full of tourists, but it is still well known for another reason. It is considered the surfing mecca of the world
and it holds many competitions throughout the year. There are many surf schools here that can teach you the ins and outs of surfing, something everyone should have a chance to experience. • You want to experience the POLYNESIAN CULTURAL CENTER AND LUAU. Spending the afternoon wandering through the 7 different villages and exploring all their cultures teaches you about the Polynesian way of life. Canoe paddling, spear throwing and Samoan cooking are just a few of the things you will learn about. Then as evening falls, settle in and enjoy an authentic luau and Polynesian show. A great way to end your day.
As always, if you have any questions about O’ahu or any other destination, please contact your local travel agent. We are here to help you plan your next great vacation.

WHAT IS
MEDICAL
MARIJUANA? CONTRIBUTED BY TIFFANIE HUFFMAN, GREEN ACRES CONSULTING-OWNER
In 2000 Nevada residents voted in favor of allowing medical marijuana but it was not sold legally (in dispensaries) until 15 years later. Although Nevada will vote in November on recreational marijuana, many don't understand the differences between medical and recreational. And despite the Federal government classifying marijuana as a schedule I drug with no medical properties, we are finding more and more about the potential benefits of cannabis. Cannabis contains many cannabinoids with the most widely know THC and CBD coming in as a close second. Thanks to the comedies of Cheech and Chong, we know that THC causes you to be happy, hungry, and sleepy but recently the pain relieving properties are coming more to light. Some patients are finding that cannabis is working better than high dose opiate prescription pain killers. You may have heard or read about the parents giving their children CBD oil to control seizures. If you have never watched one of those videos, they

are not for the faint of heart. It is extremely hard for me, as a parent, to sit and watch those children shake uncontrollably until that small dose of tarlike substance is given and the shaking stops. But it is important because for many of these children, it is the only that is keeping them alive. And, it shows that you do not have to smoke cannabis to reap the benefits. Besides rolling a joint, you can get cannabis in your system by vaping, tinctures, topicals, edibles, and even suppositories and some methods have little to no psychoactive effects. A topical salve infused with cannabis is a great way to get arthritic pain relief with absolutely no "high". Many patients have also had success with adding in essential oils. To go along with the different ways to get your dose of cannabis, it can be broken down into different types. Indica, sativa, and hybrids. Indicas have more pain relieving, relaxing effects and can be good for those that need help sleeping. Sativas are more stimulating and are seen as the focusing strains. Hybrids have been working well for patients with severe nausea. Strains come with unique names such as the more widely known

Day after day many people are able to enjoy a quality of life that was nearly impossible with modern pharmaceuticals. This beautiful plant is gaining the momentum to surpass its pre-prohibition distinction as one of the most widely accepted remedies and helping those with what were previously noted as untreatable ailments. American Made ENERGY SOURCE
CO NTRIBU TED B Y JULIE A. KRAUS, WEST ERN STAT ES P ROPANE
As we celebrate our Independence during the month of July, we are reminded of all the things that make America great. Among the many things we should be thankful for, the most important is our families. As we reflect on our independence, we should think of propane. Propane is a diversified energy which has allowed us to be independent for many years. Propane allows many people the opportunity to live outside of city limits. Propane gives us the ability to live just about anywhere we want while still being able to enjoy a warm home, provide a hot shower after a long day, cook a delicious meal for our families and even generate power in the event of an electrical power outage.
This efficient and reliable American Made energy source gives us endless options for exploring this great nation of ours. So while you are enjoying time outdoors with family and friends this July, please keep in mind these propane barbeque safety tips. • Always follow manufactures instructions which came with your propane grill • Keep grill outdoors in a well ventilated space • Keep grill clean by removing grease or fat build up from grill and trays below the grill
• It is important to place your grill in a safe location -K eep your grill at least five feet from your house or deck railing -D o not use under eaves or overhanging branches

Lifesaving treatments for cardiac conditions are now available right here at home. When it comes to the heart, minutes matter. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, the first 30 minutes after a heart attack symptom are the most critical and life-saving. With drives in excess of 190 minutes to Reno or Salt Lake City, don’t put your heart at risk. The Heart Center at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital now provides comprehensive interventional procedures that can help save lives in emergencies and help prevent heart damage. It’s not always easy getting everyone, including ourselves, motivated to exercise and eat well. We have come up with some fun tips to help engage the whole family and create some wonderful habits and relationships this summer!
1. Family fitness challenges Nothing motivates people quite like a reward or some friendly competition. Agree on a prize that everyone in the family would be eager to “win” and choose an amount of time for the challenge. You could start with a week or a month…up to you. Then ask each family member to come up with a fitness task, like 10 pushups or 15 jumping jacks for everyone to aim to do each day. Also include a serving of vegetables and/or water. As a family create a chart to keep track of everyone’s progress. At the end of the given time period, tally the accomplishments and determine who walks away with the family fitness award.
2. Cooking Challenges If the kids are old enough have them help plan and cook a healthy dinner. Have them make the grocery list and prepare the food as well. The challenge could even be in trying a new vegetable each time and finding creative ways to prepare and enjoy!
3. Ditch the car and do some walking/biking. Whether it’s getting to the park, lunch date or running errands, choose to walk or bike!
4. Plan a Family Play Date Book a block of time, starting once per week on your calendar during which all members of the family are available. Alternate the activity each week by letting a family member choose the type of exercise they want everyone to try. It could range from swimming at the pool, hikes to bike rides, basketball/football games, dancing - there are limitless activities for the whole family to experience. And who knows, one or two might just stick and become something your family really enjoys doing all the time!
5. Daily doses Take a few minutes every morning for a family stretch, walk/bike/jog or some time after dinner for a family walk. A morning wakeup routine is a great way to get the day going. And a walk after dinner is a much better way to wind down from the day than parking ourselves in front of the television. This could also include water bottles filled with the amount of water each person should drink throughout the day (half the body weight of the individual in ounces per day. (So a 120 lb. individual should consume at least 60 oz. of water per day.)

6. Family Olympics Create a day of obstacle courses, relay races, playing tag, Red Rover, H.O.R.S.E, hideand-seek, long jumps, get the whole family outside and finish the day with a healthy BBQ and lots of funny memories to discuss. This could be done weekly!
7. Spontaneous Fun Find ways to add in extras such as doing push-ups during commercial breaks, sit-ups while checking Facebook‌you get the idea! You know your family and where all these little extras could be added in.
The most important thing is to make it fun and make sure there are rewards. As adults we usually can feel and see the rewards of exercise and eating healthy with how we feel and how we look. Kids are not going to necessarily see rewards the same way‌so maybe its a new pair of sneakers once they reach a goal or a new football or bike. Just spending time as a family will be reward enough for everyone and creating healthy habits will benefit everyone!

Karlie said, “I want to nominate my great great aunt Edith Richard's. She's lived in Elko almost her whole life, she's 85 and she has done a lot while living here. She donates to the Catholic Church and the animal shelter and has to the schools and other little fund raisers. She's is the most giving person I know. She never gets the credit for it but she doesn't ever care. She's a good soul. “
Edith is very passionate about animals, and one of her favorite places to donate is to the Elko County Animal Shelter. When I say Edith is passionate about furry four legged creatures it is not to be taken lightly. Throughout Edith’s home are cute animal knick knacks further emphasizing her love for animals. Edith spent 30 years with the Animal Relief Foundation and described to me that they had saved so many
“Saving an animal won’t change the world, but for that animal the world changes forever.” Edith and her family had moved from mining camp to mining camp when she was younger. Her parents separated and later, Edith’s mother remarried. Edith, her Mother, Step Father and Brother Jack all relocated to Elko in 1939 when she was in 3rd grade and she has been here since! Edith is from Elko High schools Graduating class of 1948! I asked Edith what things were like when she was growing up in Elko and she said “Things weren’t like they are now.”

animals she couldn’t account for how many cats and dogs they were able to find forever homes for. Sadly Edith’s very own four legged companion Jenny passed away this last year. Edith has also been very generous to Elko’s Catholic Church and for many years would take communion to those who were unable to attend church. Edith also worked at the Nevada Youth Training Center for 13 years.
There is no greater gift than the gift of a second chance.
Edith thank you for being so generous to our community and for spending your years fighting for our four legged companions and giving them the chance they so deserve! There is no greater gift than the gift of a second chance. Your kindness and compassion is so greatly appreciated and you are so deserving of being our Good Neighbor! So for our readers, on behalf of Edith, if you are in a position to adopt PLEASE go down to The Elko Animal Shelter and help one of the shelters occupants find a FUR-ever home today!
If you know someone who deserves to be nominated for our Good neighbor please visits Shabonya Dutton’s Facebook page and message us your nominee’s information! You can also email kelsie.creamer.k9f0@statefarm. com or stop by our office at 1794 Idaho St. and fill out a ballot.

PET ADVICE COLUMN
Spay and Neuter:
Really is a Matter of Life and death Pet Personals
| Contributed by Elko Veterinary Clinic |
Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, are euthanized. The good news is that responsible pet owners can make a difference. By having your dog or cat sterilized, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens.
Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters, helps protect against some serious health problems, and may reduce many of the behavioral problems associated with the mating instinct. Veterinarians always recommend spaying and neutering pets, but many may not explain why it is so important. I hope to illustrate with two examples. These cases are very difficult and heartbreaking for veterinarians and their teams because the illness could have been avoided.
One example is a middle age to older female dog that has been sick for a few days and was brought to the clinic for vaginal discharge. She was not spayed and was otherwise healthy. She was diagnosed with a pyometra. This is a life threatening infection of the uterus which requires emergency surgery to remove the uterus. The surgery was too expensive for the family to afford so euthanasia was elected. The second example is another middle aged female dog who presented with vaginal discharge. She
90
J U LY 2 0 1 6
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
also had a pyometra. The family was able to afford surgery and during the preparation for surgery a large mammary gland mass was found. The mass was malignant and had already metastasized to the lungs. The dog recovered from surgery but the tumor was malignant and due to the masses in the chest she only lived another few months before the family elected euthanasia. Two dogs and two different situations. In both cases, pets’ lives ended and the bond with their family
it is never too late to prevent an unnecessary illness in your furry loved one. broken prematurely. Patients like these are not the only ones; this happens almost daily within the veterinary profession. The knowledge that we can save lives and help animals, but in some circumstances fail to achieve that goal, is gut wrenching. The worst part of these examples is that it all could have been avoided with a simple ovariohysterectomy years earlier. A spay or ovariohysterectomy is the surgical removal of a female animal’s reproductive organs so she cannot become pregnant. A neuter is the surgical removal of a male animals testicles. Removing a female dog or cat’s ovaries eliminates heat cycles and generally reduces the unwanted behavior that leads to some frustration for owners. Removing the testes from male dogs and cats reduces the breeding instinct, making them less inclined to roam and more content to stay at home. The procedure has no effect on a pet’s intelligence or ability to learn, play, work or hunt. Some pets tend to be better behaved following surgical removal of their ovaries or testes, making them more desirable companions. While both spaying and neutering are major surgical procedures, they are also the most common surgeries performed by veterinarians on cats and dogs. Like any surgical procedure, sterilization is associated with some anesthetic and surgical risk, but the overall incidence of complications is very low. Before the procedure, your pet is given a thorough physical examination to ensure that he/she is in good health. General anesthesia is administered to perform the surgery and medications are given to minimize pain. You will be asked to keep your pet calm and quiet for a few days after surgery as the incision begins to heal.
Benefits for you and your pet: • Spaying and neutering reduces or eliminates the odds of breast cancer and dangerous uterine infections in females and prostate problems and testicular cancer in males. • Decreases frustration for owners due to decrease in the natural urge to mate. Your companion will be less distracted, more easily trained, and a more contented member of your family. • Decrease in the animal's need to roam in search of a mate, decreasing the chances that your pet will become lost, get into fights with other animals or be hit by a car. • Eliminate messy heat cycles in females and attracting unwanted males. Irresponsible or accidental breeding contributes to dog attacks and bites. • Reduce spraying, wailing, marking territory, or making inappropriate sexual approaches toward people or objects. • The extra expense for food or veterinary care in the event of an unexpected litter of puppies or kittens. • Many communities offer lower licensing fees and other benefits for spayed or neutered companion animals. • Spaying and neutering helps reduce the number of strays and unwanted animals in a community. Stray animals get into garbage cans, scare people, cause car accidents, and damage property. Some stray animals kill or injure wildlife.
There are numerous benefits to getting your pet spayed or neutered and it is never too late to prevent an unnecessary illness in your furry loved one.
