ABBACADABRA – The Music of ABBA & “Mamma Mia!” Contributed by Smokey McBryde

The fun music and memories of the ABBA 70’s music is coming back to town. How often does an international production show swing through Elko? A show that has appeared worldwide in countries like Italy, Greece, England and recently Guatemala? A performance selling out in cities like New York, Miami, Las Vegas, St. Maarten, Seattle and Lake Tahoe? Not only that… but if you have lived in Elko during the last 30 years, you may even remember a couple of the cast members…

Lesley Green, Fred Sampson (Back), Gary Raffanelli & Sandy Selby

27 years ago, Elko was a different place. The population was 9000, the mining boom was just starting, Bob Pepin was considering opening a 2nd McDonalds, the casino industry was king and the town was popping. On any particular night there was live entertainment at any number of casinos. Stockman’s would host “The Lelands”, the Commercial Hotel would have “Williams & Ree”, “The Mugglestons” and “The Matys Brothers”. The top drawing act at the newly built Red Lion was “Gary Raffanelli & Sandy Selby”. It has taken 27 years, but “Gary & Sandy” are back… BIG TIME!! Yes, it seems that all things go in circles, and anyone in Elko who remembers the late 70’s and early 80’s will remember “Gary & Sandy”. They were a mainstay in Nevada showrooms for 30 years. The economy reinvented a new course for Gary Raffanelli. In 1991, he invented Slam Grand Pianos and began building custom pianos for acts like Madonna, Alicia Keys, Disney, Little Richard, Tom Petty, and just sent one to Kid Rock last December. That mini industry led him to producing shows, and when asked to come up with a new show for Harrah’s Entertainment in 2002,

The Real ABBA

The trick was to find three other people who looked, he accepted the challenge. Gary brought 3 ideas to the table, all impressive. He got up to leave and when sang and played like the original members. Gary has an uncanny resemblance to Benny Andersson, he opened the door, one executive said, “You got keyboardist and founding member of ABBA. Sandy anything else?” He did not, but didn’t want Harrah’s Selby’s voice and stage presence was to know that. He drove his car to the a natural for blonde original singer, meeting with an ABBA CD playing, Agnetha Faltskog. Two nationwide and without hesitation, Gary “Had I known 30 searches produced Lesley Green, bluffed the idea that he was already who portrays Anna-Frid (Frida) working on a “secret project”… years ago that all Lyngstad, the brunette. “Get ready for a night of laughing, singing, dancing, touching emotion, and a surprise ending that people will be talking about months after the show leaves” says Gary. “If you can name 3 ABBA hits, you will probably remember all 20 performed in the show. We tried to bring the show to the Elko two years ago, but finally found a time slot that worked out for our routing and for Don Newman at the Convention Center. We have even approached one of Elko’s local music school’s to participate in the event for one number. “ You will hear all the hits, “Dancing Queen”, “Fernando”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Mamma Mia!”, and more. If you don’t know the history behind ABBA, the two girls and two guys were actually married, and subsequently divorced before the group ended in 1982. “We portray the show as if they got together AFTER they divorced, and perform in that character, which is hysterical.” Gary tells. There will be a full band backing the show. Made up of Kent Gochnour on drums, Jon Esler, multiinstrumentalist, Haley Bond sings backup, Dave Clark on bass, and Levi Maddox, a well known internet singer/ songwriter who opens the show as an actor.

NOTE: Try to be in your seat by 7:30 PM to catch the full video pre-show!! This is a one night event. Friday, June 28th is the day to mark on your calendar. Showtime is 8 PM. If necessary, a 2nd earlier show may be scheduled. There are “Golden Circle” VIP tickets which include front premier seating, a CD, photo, and a private “Meet & Greet” before the show. Tickets range from $19 to $49.

stay Hydrated and Healthy Contributed by Mandi Ratliff of Cucina Fresca

Change up the liquid portion of your diet for the better, and immerse yourself in the simple pleasures of freshly made juices. Add the invigorating sensation of carbonation to the mix, and prepare to discover a new "favorite" way to stay hydrated.

We lose about

8 cups of water

each day with normal daily activities

Staying Hydrated? Our bodies are approximately 60% water. After oxygen to breathe, we need water more than food in order to stay alive and functioning well. Our liquid personality is responsible for blood flow, staying cool, smooth motions, and staying in physiological balance. We lose about 8 cups of water each day with normal daily activities, and need to regularly replenish this daily loss just to stay alive. Even mild dehydration can slow us down, or cause our bodies to operate less optimally. Given that water is such a basic need, it’s no wonder that humans have been exploring liquid refreshment for ages.

Carbonation Chemistry Sparkling bubbles have intrigued us for centuries. Tiny bubbles tickle our tongues and appetites whether from natural geological sources, brewed yeast versions, or mechanically infused gases.

Our bodies are approximately

60% water

19

JUNE 2013 | everythingelko.com

Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is dissolved in liquid and kept under pressure. When the pressure is released, the carbon dioxide gas is freed in a stream of tiny bubbles eager to escape. Some of the carbon dioxide gas reacts with water (H2O) to form carbonic acid (H2CO3). This weakly acidic formulation further tantalizes our palate and makes the tiny bubbles even more desirable.

Soda or Pop? The process for mechanically infusing bubbles into liquid and capturing the effervescence in a bottle dates back to 1772. Since then, a booming industry has arisen. Today, carbonated beverages comprise a large portion of the $40 billion nonalcoholic beverage industry. Soda trends and fads through the years have become immortalized as cultural icons – Grape NeHi, Orange Crush, and A&W Root Beer. Whether you call these fizzy drinks “soda” or “pop,” depends upon where you live:

Sparkling Watermelon Soda

Watermelon is so sweet and juicy that it is practically a beverage right off the vine. A bit of added water makes it truly quaffable. Watermelon Is lower in sugar than other melons (6.2 percent, as opposed to the 7.8 percent of cantaloupe and 8.6 percent of honeydew), but it is also very low in sodium (1 percent, as opposed to the 16 percent of cantaloupe and 18 percent of honeydew), which means it can be bland when juiced. A little bit of sea salt takes care of that. A glass of watermelon juice tastes sweet but has only 60 calories.

Watermelon Juice – Enough for 4 servings
1/4 –1/2 seedless watermelon (about 4-1/2 pounds)
1/2 cup water
1/2 teaspoon coarse sea salt Cut the rind from the watermelon and chop the flesh into small pieces, trapping any juices that flow out. Combine the chopped watermelon flesh, collected juices, and water in a blender or food processor. Process until pureed. Set a strainer over a large bowl and pass the pureed melon through the strainer, stirring the loose puree gently as it strains to get as much liquid through as possible without forcing any solids into the strained liquid. Discard the solids, and stir the salt into the watermelon liquid. Note: Because watermelon juice is so naturally watery, it cannot be diluted with seltzer into a sparkling beverage. It must be carbonated in a soda siphon. To Carbonate with a Siphon – 4 servings
1 batch watermelon juice

in the siphon in a refrigerator for up to 5 days. Disperse as desired into tall glasses filled with ice, and serve. Garnish with more sea salt, if desired. Pour the juice into a 1-quart soda siphon. Charge with CO2 according to the manufacturer’s directions. Siphon-charged sodas can be stored JUNE 2013 | everythingelko.com

Nothing says summer like watermelon! It’s a thirst quencher with it’s high water content and pleasing flavor. Adding some sparkle to the juice turns the bright pink elixir into something even more special and refreshing. Low in calories, naturally colorful, it’s a healthy, alternative beverage that more than satisfies any thirst with its freshness and summer flavor.

Make it a granita! Serve this soda extremely cold for maximum pleasure. Chill the watermelon in the refrigerator or in a tub of ice prior to juicing. Or, chill the juice well prior to enjoying, and serve over a generous helping of ice. Add sugar to your watermelon soda and freeze it in an ice cream maker for an enjoyable granita on a hot summer’s day. The added sugar prevents the juice from getting too hard once frozen. Or, freeze the strained watermelon juice as ice cubes for use with the Sparkling Watermelon Soda, or with a contrasting beverage such as lemonade. Home carbonation systems bring fizz to water, juice, or whatever your beverage might be. Earlier home systems were limited in size, and lacked capability for delivering adequate fizz. Today’s home soda makers are designed for daily use and efficiently infuse bubbles in an easy, no-hassle way.

so good...

Advantages of Home Carbonation 1. No lugging of heavy soda bottles from the store. 2. No storage space for bottles of soda required. 3. No empty bottles to return or recycle. 4. Less expensive. 5. How sweet it is – is up to you!

How they

work

Home soda makers operate mechanically - electricity needed. A special water bottle, designed to withstand pressure, screws tightly onto the soda maker. A CO2 cartridge fits in the back of the unit. By pressing and releasing a lever, the CO2 gas is forced, under pressure into the liquid. Tightly capped, the CO2 gas stays dissolved in the liquid until opened. The colder the water, the greater the fizz it accepts.

Fizz your favorite flavors

classic Simple Syrup A natural base for many homemade beverages, simple syrup may be made and kept refrigerated for up to 2 months. Bring equal parts water and sugar to a boil and stir as the sugar dissolves. Cool and refrigerate. Use as needed for iced tea, lemonade, or other beverages.

Add fizzy water to your own base concoction, or use prepared concentrated flavor bases to make your own soda. Another advantage of homemade sodas and fresh juices is the ability to regulate the amount of sweetness in your drinks. The natural sugars of fruit alone often provide enough sweetness for a very tasty, and refreshing drink. Should your beverage require a dose of sweetener, you get to choose what type of sweetener, and just how much to use. Natural sweeteners such as honey or agave syrup, add a hint of flavor along with their sweetness. Herbal sweeteners such as stevia, pack a powerful punch of “sweet in just a few drops, in fact 300 times the sweetness of sugar!

Cookbook Review Homemade Soda, 200 Recipes for Making and Using by Andrew Schloss. Copyright 2011. Published by Storey Publishing, North Adams, MA.

Cantaloupe Clementine Soda Melon and Citrus pair up in this clever soda mixture. The cantaloupe dominates the flavor profile, while the citrus adds brightness and tang. The naturally bright orange color captured our eyes and palate all at once. We used an entire melon for our batch and kept the concentrate in the refrigerator for the next day. Try it with honeydew melon & fresh lime juice!

Cantaloupe is one of the most fragrant of melons, harboring a musky, sweaty redolence beneath its light and sweet floral top notes. Its mammalian nuance makes cantaloupe a grateful candidate for a splash of citrus; suddenly light shines into the darkest corners of its fragrance, and it comes out smelling like a, well, cantaloupe.

Cantaloupe Clementine Juice – Enough for 1 serving

1 cup fresh cantaloupe chunks
1/2 cup freshly squeezed Clementine juice (or tangerine or orange)
Pinch of sea salt

Combine the cantaloupe, Clementine juice, and salt in a blender or food

processor, and puree. Set a strainer over a large bowl and pass the puree through the strainer, stirring the loose puree gently as it strains to get as much liquid through without forcing any solids into the strained liquid. Discard the solids.

Alternatively, juice 1-1/2 cups of cantaloupe chunks in a juice extractor, and mix the juice with the Clementine juice and salt.

To Mix with Seltzer – 1 serving

1 batch cantaloupe clementine juice
1 cup seltzer

Pour the juice into a tall glass. Add the seltzer and stir just until blended. Add ice and serve.

Join the Juicing Train!

Read the labels: You’ll want to make your own!

With admonitions to eat more fruit and vegetables coming from every direction, actually getting your daily quota of 5 servings of vegetables and 3 servings of fruit ay be a challenge. Juicing fruits and veggies makes achieving this nutritional target easier to accomplish.

Breville Juice Fountain Blend more health-filled fruits and vegetables into your family’s diet. This Breville juicer is a powerful kitchen tool with some serious power. Utilizes centrifugal force to extract juice from all kinds of fruit and vegetables. Features an extrawide feed tube that accepts larger pieces and minimizes preparation. The pulp container is large in capacity and easily cleaned. Includes instructions and recipes.

Omega Juicers Omega has a long-standing reputation in the juicing arena. They feature juicers that operate with centrifugal or masticating mechanisms. Each juicer is designed for heavy duty juicing while maximizing the highest yield from your produce. The Omega 4000 model operates through centrifugal action extracting 20-30% more juice than other juicers. Holds a 15 year warranty.

What passes as “juice” in the grocery store aisle is often sugar water and not much fruit or vegetable. Even the more expensive 100% juices are primarily apple or grape juice from concentrate with splashes of other fruit added for color and marketing pizzazz.

Keep it

fresh!

Fresh juice retains many healthy enzymes and nutrients in their natural state compared with juices that have been heated and pasteurized. Juicing fruits and vegetables maximizes your fresh produce purchase – use carrots and their tops, beets and their greens, apples and their peels, even strawberries and their green tops! When fresh is not available, frozen fruits and vegetables are a good substitute; they are picked at the peak of harvest, and minimally processed. To reap full nutritional value, start with real food, fresh or frozen, and extract its juicy goodness. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables hold great amounts of nutrition.

1. Juice’s anti-oxidant components capture free radicals that float about in our bodies wreaking potential havoc and taxing our immune system. 2. The plant fiber provided in fresh juices is necessary for a healthy body, assists in slowing digestion, and offers a sensation of fullness. 3. The natural sweetness of fruits and vegetables satisfies without the density of refined sugary drinks. Juicing is a kitchen activity that once you try it, you will love it, and feel healthier for it. Fruits and vegetables are mostly water. Extracting juice from fruits and vegetables involves breaking down the cell walls, micro-sizing the plant’s particles, and isolating indigestible fiber.

Slow juicing Contrary to its name, slow juicing doesn’t take a long time, but rather the juicer operates at a lower revolutions per minute while extracting more juice faster than traditional juicers. This allows the machine and juice to stay cool during operation and retain the juice’s enzymatic qualities.

The HUROM® Slow Juicer extracts more juice than most machines. It works like a mortar and pestle with masticating plates that crush, then press out the juices. It operates quietly while producing the most juice from your fruits and vegetables, and even nuts! No sharp blades; built in safety mechanisms.

to Elko’s 593rd Transportation Company

Tears of joy were shed as Elko welcomed home a family of soldiers. On April 11, 2013 twelve Elko boys returned home after 319 days in Afghanistan.

27

JUNE 2013 | everythingelko.com

The 593rd Transportation Company was deployed to Afghanistan after spending a brief training period in Fort Hood, Texas. Their mission objective was to transport supplies, provide security for Afghan truck drivers and to transport military personnel. They were also responsible for assisting in the closing of FOBS (forward operation bases) in RC capital (the region surrounding the capitol of Afghanistan) around Kabul. The 593rd was comprised of soldiers from Elko, Battle Mountain, Ely, Reno, Las Vegas and every corner of Nevada. This was their first time in Afghanistan, but their first deployment was in Iraq in 2006. Now many of the young soldiers can proudly say they have served in both the Iraq and Afghanistan Campaigns. The feeling of love and pride was overwhelming when the soldiers walked through the gates of the Elko Airport terminal. They were greeted with hugs and tears as family members and friends welcomed them home. 319 days 7,656 hours, 459,360 minutes and 27, 561,600 seconds was the time period break down Sgt. Douglas Braithwaite spent away from the love of his life, Lola Stark and their kids Schelbi, Charlotte and Tyler. “Waiting isn’t easy, but when it’s for the one you love, it’s worth it,” said Lola about her time away from Doug.

A few misconceptions of the Afghan region are that it is desolate and vast desert with blazing temperatures like that of Iraq. The reality is that the temperature is very close to Elko and only varies about 10 degrees from daily temperatures here; it even snows during winter. There are mountains, hills, and even paved roads in the region they were deployed. There are some very big differences in Afghanistan compared to America. Some of the few that Sgt. Braithwaite mentioned are the fact that there are no traffic laws in Afghanistan. Driving was confusing to new soldiers that hadn’t been in a third world country yet and took some getting used to. They would start driving to American standards when suddenly cars would be in the same lane driving towards them and at a moments’ notice they would have to adjust. The people there believe so highly in fate, that they don’t look both ways

before crossing the street, they just simply walk across. With soldiers still training the police force and their government in shambles it seems to us a very radical place.

We here at Everything Elko are eternally grateful for all of our soldiers and the sacrifices they have made to protect America and our way of life. Our hats are off in appreciation for the time they had to spend away from home and their families amongst many other things. Soldiers from Reno, Las Vegas, Elko, Winnemucca and the other outlying communities-we salute you for your duty to god and your country and wish you the best with your family and friends. Thank you for your service!

TRUE BBQ. done ri g ht.

{

The beginning of the story goes like this.

Sprin g C r e e k’ s Bes t ke p t

Four years ago, while traveling to Salt Lake City Utah with a friend, I jokingly discussed what I thought was a void in the Elko’s areas restaurant industry, True BBQ. BBQ cooked over wood, with low temperatures over long periods of time. I never desired to operate my own restaurant as I knew the work that would be involved. But over the last 20 years I have been cooking for friends and family and really working on my culinary development. They always stated, “you should open your own restaurant.”

secre t!

But, through coaxing from close family, In February 2011, I retired from my steady job of 23 years and decided to pursue a new career as a Chef. I enrolled at the San Diego Culinary Institute and moved to San diego.

43

JUNE 2013 | everythingelko.com

{

During my culinary education, I took several factors into consideration and decided I wanted to cook and provide upscale culinary experiences to small groups of people in a intimate setting. This, combined with my love for the outdoors, I began looking for a Hunting and Fishing Lodge or Ranch, to complete my externship as required by the Culinary School.

As luck would have it, a previous student at the school was a sous chef at a ranch in Wyoming. I began to correspond with the previous student and then the Executive Chef of the ranch. And upon completing the courses at the school, I left San Diego and went to Saratoga Wyoming and started my externship at the Brush Creek Ranch, Lodge

and Spa. I remained at the ranch till the completion of the season, were I returned to Elko Nevada. Determined to put my new skills to work, I began steps to own and operate my own catering company. Primal Cut Catering was formed in November of 2011, but didn’t get its first job until January 2012. It was a small lunch, for four employee’s at Newmont’s main office. within two weeks I had a second job on the books and slowly the other jobs began trickling in. By April 2012, the catering company was really building momentum, and has continued to see success. In September 2012 it was decided the catering company needed a larger kitchen in which to operate as events continued and became larger. It was then, that PC Ranch BBQ really began to form. PC Ranch BBQ opened it’s doors on December 1st, 2012. Using Commercial Smokers, PC Ranch BBQ prepares it’s BBQ with real Hickory wood chunks and cooks the meats over a low heat for extended periods of time. This brings a unique flavor and tenderness to the Pull shoulder, Ribs, chicken and Tri-tip. Chef and owner Vinson Scott created most of the recipes used inside PC Ranch BBQ. The ideas behind most of the recipes was to use fresh ingredients and prepare as many of the menu items as possible right at the restaurant. PC Ranch BBQ Is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Come in and enjoy real BBQ with fresh salads, sides and Desserts.

This spring/summer lets mix things up, with new gorgeous colors! Guaranteed to have you turning heads at the pool! You can shave years off your appearance as simple as the color of your hair! The right shade of color can brighten your skin, emphasize your eyes and the wrong one can wash you out and actually add years to your face. It's about enhancing not extremes!

-BRUNETTES-

-BLONDES-

Who says blondes have more fun??

All the stereotypes aside, blondes

Try a beachy or sandy brown this summer, the shades of browns or blacks are NATURAL, just kicked up a notch!

can be very high maintenance Toners,Touch ups, and deep conditioning are a must! So make sure you commit fully before going into the blonde world!

Carmel peek a boos are a great way to liven it up or lots a highlights around the face. For you look at me BRUNETTES try adding a little cinnamon to your color for an extra kick!

This summers biggest trends for blondes are vanilla along with buttery and sandy but the most requested is "The just got off the beach sunkissed highlighted look"

-REDRed is having a moment right now in the world. Which means everyone is WANTING IT!! I've even jumped on this train! Skin tone is most important when considering to go red. If you are fair skinned try to stay on the lighter side of red like strawberry blonde! It has just enough pink in it to make your skin look amazing! Reds loose there luster faster then any other color, so when choosing your favorite shade wether it be those bright coppers, cherry bombs or the auburns make sure your shampooing is down to a few times a week, try a dry shampoo for in between days! It will save your color for a few extra weeks.

The benefits of Vinyl Siding: Contributed by Banner Construction Vinyl Siding reduces heating and cooling costs. I t can add an additional layer of exterior insulation of up to 1½” thickness that delivers outstanding R-value performance. inyl Siding has a durable weatherproof surface with secure V seams to repel the worst downpours, and the insulating layer “breathes” to resist water retention. Vinyl Siding is designed to stay securely fastened, with no tearing or rattling, even in extreme winds. The durable surface and contoured underlayment stand up strong to impact from wind-blown objects, pounding hailstorms and other elements. inyl Siding is extremely easy to maintain vs. paint. The highV performance finish beautifully resists scratching and abrasions from everyday wear and tear. The engineered vinyl surface is guaranteed to resist fading for a generation.

Toxic Bodies? Does the repeated use of deodorant expose you to hazardous chemicals? Find out! If you’re like many women – you wouldn’t even think of leaving your house without your “face” on - meaning skin lotions, cosmetics and anything else you might use to enhance your natural beauty. Are these products safe? According to some research, not only are cosmetics potentially toxic, but so are hair products, deodorants, and perfumes. In her book, Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry, Stacy Malkan reveals the extent of toxic chemicals in personal care products that millions use every day – chemicals that often don’t appear on any ingredient listing for the products. The result of our use of chemicals in our culture produces some disturbing findings:

• In 2004, scientists discovered pesticides in the blood of newborns

• In 2005, researchers found perchlorate, a substance used in rocket fuel, in human breast milk • Many people are testing positive for flame retardants, phthalates (oil-based softening agents and preservatives that can affect hormone function and have been linked to birth defects) and lead (contained in lipsticks) • In 2004, English researchers identified parabens in breast tumor samples. Parabens are found in the vast majority of deodorants, body sprays and skin creams. Because they are absorbed into the body, they are believed to produce an increased risk and incidence of breast cancer Health and beauty product manufacturers will argue that there are only small amounts of toxic chemicals in their products. This may be true if they were used once, but day after day, over time,

is quite a different story. And some countries don’t even require manufacturers of these products to list the ingredients! There are alternatives. Many people have stopped using a lot of personal care products. As with food, only those labeled, “certified organic,” can be considered safe to use. There is an online database that you can access to determine the toxicity of many of these products. You can also email or call manufacturers who don’t list their product ingredients and ask them for a list. There is a lot of money generated from the sale of these products, and a lot to be lost by those who use them without knowing the toxins they may contain.

raising awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient support. Relay brings people together from all walks of life with the common goal of eliminating cancer. No matter who you are, there’s a place for you at Relay.

Teams of people camp out at Elko High School and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event – because cancer never sleeps.

All survivors (anyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis) are invited to join us as our guests in the Survivor Lap, which opens the Relay For Life. Their strength and courage help the community see that cancer survivorship is real – that we are making progress in the battle against cancer.

Relay For Life brings the community together to raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from the disease. While you are raising much needed funds, you will also be

The Miss Elko County Scholarship Organization started as Miss Elko County Fair in 1921 and shares a birthday with the Miss America Pageant which began as a way to generate tourism in Atlantic City. For the last few years the Miss America Pageant had found a temporary home in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. The 2013-14 pageant will return to its home in Atlantic City on September 15 with the pageant televised on ABC. Elko may just have a hometown girl on that stage, first she must conquer the Miss Nevada Pageant on June 14 and 15 in Las Vegas and we know that she can do it!! Jovahnna Alexandria Anderson, Miss Elko County 2013. Jovahnna is the 23 year old daughter of Scott and Maria Anderson and younger sister to Aubree, a former MEC in 2007. She is a 2012 Magna cum laude graduate of the University of Arizona in Tucson with her degree in Music-Vocal Performance. Jovahnna has been singing since she

63

JUNE 2013 | everythingelko.com

could talk and she feels that singing has always been a gift that has blessed her with many life opportunities. Some of which include spending 3 weeks at the International Music School and Festival in Saarburg, Germany and performing at the Taos Opera Institute in Taos, New Mexico. In addition, she received 1st place at the prestigious Emilia Rieman opera competition in 2012 at the University of Arizona. Jovahnna will be continuing her education at the University of Denver, Lamont School of Music in the fall of 2013 in pursuit of her Masters Degree in Vocal Performance as a recipient of the Newman Fellowship Scholarshipthe highest scholarship offered by the University. Her platform is “Promoting the OPERAtunity of Classical Music” and as her platform Jovahnna recently held a recital in her hometown where she awarded an EHS music student, pursuing a career

in music a scholarship in her name. Each student presented their talent as a part of the audition process that included an essay about what music means to them. Jovahnna also received a declaration from Mayor Chris Johnson and the City of Elko declaring April 26, 2013, the day of her recital as Classical Music Day. Her favorite quote is “The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep.” ~ Robert Frost “The voice is a gorgeous, powerful instrument that sings every emotion of the heart. Without Opera, our world would be missing one of the most enduring and beautiful forms of art ever created.”-Jovahnna Alexandria Anderson, Miss Elko County 2013 The Miss Elko County’s Outstanding Teen program was implemented by Executive Director Tera Hooiman in 2011. The Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant is the little sister program to Miss America

and offers much of the same phases competition; that include: Interview, Talent, Activewear, Eveningwear and Scholastic Achievement. Elko crowned our 3rd Miss Elko County’s Outstanding Teen, Kaitlynn Pilkington in February and Kailtynn will represent Elko at the Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen Pageant this June in Las Vegas. Kaitlynn Pilkington, Miss Elko County’s Outstanding Teen 2013. Kaitlynn is the 15 year old daughter of Albert and Deborah Urrizaga and Dean Pilkington. She is the baby sister of Zoe, 21; Matt, 27; TJ, 18 and auntie to Tayleen, 4. Kaitlynn currently attends Spring Creek High School and as a Freshman she has received awards including Silver and Gold Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, multiple Citizenship awards and received the “Science Student of the Year Award” in Middle School. Kailtynn is also a Freshman cheerleader, Captain for football season and will return on the team as a Sophomore. She held offices of Treasurer, Historian and President of her 4-H club, Blazing Trails. Kailtynn’s platform is “Promoting Healthy Lifestyles for Cancer

Prevention” and she hosted a Family Fun Carnival where she partnered with the Elko Relay for Life and spoke about the importance of not only healthy eating, but the goal of having a healthy lifestyle that includes eating healthy and excercizing at least 30 minutes a day and refraining from smoking and drinking in moderation-if you are over the age of 21. Having lost her Grandmother to cancer and seeing her Grandfather go through chemotherapy, radiation and multiple surgeries makes Kaitlynn is a voice that can relate to students her age. She is someone they can confide in and talk about cancer related issues and she can also relate to adults and tell them how their lifestyle choices are, or could be negatively affecting their family. “As Miss Elko County’s Outstanding Teen I hope to encourage youth to become more educated about cancer and cancer prevention methods. I will succeed in this task by attending and participating in as many local events and cancer related fundraisers as possible.” –Kaitlynn Pilkington, Miss Elko County’s Outstanding Teen 2013

Her favorite quote is “When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry…Show that you have a million reasons to smile.” – Author Unknown In addition to the Miss (ages 17-24) and Teen (Ages 13-17) programs, the Miss Elko County Scholarship Organization also has the “Little Sister” program. It was implemented as a non-competitive opportunity for young girls to receive some fun pageant training from the MECSO Directors and contestants. The Little Sisters take part in appearances throughout the year and can even attend Miss Nevada as a Silver State Princess. Titleholders act as mentors for the “little” during her year of service. Baseball Wreath Summer is just around the corner and for some of you out there it means Baseball season. I found this

super cute baseball wreath on pinterest and thought I would give it a whirl. All you need is a wire hanger, 15 baseballs ( I used old beat up ones because I felt it gave it a vintage flare, but new baseballs would look great too), a drill, and some ribbon. Drill holes through baseballs and and feed wire through, tie the hanger together and add your ribbon. I gave this project an A because it really doesn't get any easier than this.

Teacher Gift Don't forget about those teachers on the last day of school. This pinterest project was also very simple. Just grab some crayons at the dollar store and wrap (hot glue) it around "anything", like a vase, an oatmeal canister, a can, etc… if the height of your item is too tall just wrap some ribbon around the excess to make up for that extra space. Then fill with candy, pencils, lotion, or even a plant. This project gets a B only because you may have a spot where a crayon won't fit just right due to the circumference of your canister, and therefore you might have to place it somewhere where that "spot" can be hidden.

Classmate Gift SCHOOL’S OUT, Yay!!!!!!!! An adorable way to say “enjoy your summer” to classmates is to put together these fantastic goodie bags. I found the the free printable on pinterest and then filled baggies with some smarties candies and a packet of Kool-Aid. Project grade is an A+++ because the printable is FREE and Kool-Aid packs and a bag of smarties are super affordable as well.

Happy Crafting!!!
