The artist Emily Silver spends as much time as possible in the Great Basin. That influence is reflected in her series of fourteen landscape watercolors that premiered on May 3 as a special exhibit at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko. Counterpane, as Silver has titled her show, will run through August 2 in the Barrick Gallery. The name was inspired by a line from the Robert Louis Stevenson poem “The Land of Counterpane” (1885). Formerly from Gardnerville, Nevada, Emily Silver now teaches Drawing, Design, and Watercolor at College of the Redwoods (Eureka, California). She received a BA in Visual Design from Stanford University and an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her exhibition history in Nevada includes solo shows at Saint Mary’s Art Center (Virginia City), McKinley Arts and Culture Center (Reno), Nevada State Library and Archives (Carson City), and Nevada State Legislature (Carson City). Silver was also part of a group exhibition at Oats Park Arts (Fallon). In his essay “Cartographer of Stone, Silence, and Dust” (2015), Shaun Griffin of the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) wrote of Emily Silver: “Whether the border of Las Vegas or the interior of the high desert, her painting represents the outline of our presence in this place.” He went on to say that she “paints like a poet: exactly. To do so she excavates the tensions of watercolor.” The Northeastern Nevada Museum is located at 1515 Idaho Street in Elko. Carrot Salad with Cumin

MAKES: 4 servings   TIME: 15 minutes

1-1/2 pounds carrots   Juice of 2 oranges  Juice of 1 lemon

Here's a simple salad in a typically North African style that features the sweetness of fresh oranges offset nicely by the tang of ground cumin, You can also combine carrot and celeriac, jicama, or sunchokes, using the same dressing.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon ground cumin, or more to taste    1. U se the julienne cutter of a food processor to cut the carrots into fine shreds, or cut into 1/8-inch-thick slices. 2. B lend the citrus juices, oil, salt and pepper, and cumin and pour the dressing over the carrots. Toss and serve.

This recipe makes four servings, but feel free to double it and enjoy it in a variety of ways. It keeps well refrigerated for several days and may be transformed into different presentations for lunch or supper. Here are a few of our takes on how to take this basic salad and go places with it!

Spicy no-mayo MAKES: 8 servings   coleslaw TIME: 30 minutes

1: Carrot, Currants + Quinoa Salad Combine 1 cup of the carrot salad with 2 cups of cooked quinoa. Add one-half cup of dried currants or raisins. Mix, and serve warm or cold with a few chopped pistachios on top. QUINOA, one of the healthiest grains around, is ready in just under 15 minutes. One cup of quinoa cooks into 2 cups of ready-to-eat grain. The four ingredients blend delightfully into a nutritionally complete entrée or attractive side dish.

2 T Dijon mustard, or to taste

2 T sherry vinegar, red wine vinegar, or freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 small clove garlic, minced

1 T minced fresh chile (optional)

2: Spring Rolls w/ Spicy Peanut Sauce

1/4 cup peanut or extra virgin olive oil

Layer 2 Tablespoons of carrot salad, bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts and cilantro leaves on softened rice paper wrappers. Fold and roll into neat cylinders. Serve fresh with a spicy peanut sauce or hoisinbased dip.

3: Chopped Salad Stacks With a tall-sided biscuit cutter serving as a form, layer the carrot salad with other shredded vegetables – jicama and chopped, fresh spinach are pictured here – tamp down each layer. When complete, carefully remove the form. Serve on individual plates atop a bed of greens.

1. W hisk the mustard, vinegar, garlic, and chile together in a small bowl. Add the oil a little at a time, whisking all the while. 2. C ombine the cabbage, peppers, and scallion and toss with the dressing. Season with salt and pepper and refrigerate until ready to serve. (It's best to let this rest for an hour before serving. Just before serving, toss with the parsley.

Drizzle with a super-easy dressing of 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon whole-grain mustard, and 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar.

1 to 1-1/2 pounds (about 3 medium) cucumbers  1/2 cup sour cream or yogurt

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice or white wine vinegar  Pinch cayenne

Salt and freshly ground black pepper  1/4 cup chopped fresh dill or parsley 1. If you're using really good cucumbers, just slice them and proceed to Step 3    2. I f you're using conventional supermarket cucumbers, peel them. Cut them in half lengthwise, then scoop out the seeds with a spoon. Slice, salt, and put in a colander; let drain (over a bowl or in the sink) for 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse, drain, and spin or pat dry. 3. C ombine the sour cream [or yogurt] and lemon juice, then whisk in the cayenne. When the cucumbers are ready, toss them with the dressing. Season with salt and pepper, garnish with the dill, and serve or refrigerate for up to an hour. Cucumber Salad with Tomatoes and Peppers. A mini chopped salad: Add 1/2 cup chopped tomato (seeded and salted to drain excess liquid) and 1/2 cup chopped red or yellow bell pepper to the cucumbers.

• 1 pound whole-wheat pizza dough

• Zest of 1 lemon

• 4 tomatoes, halved horizontally

• 4 T extra-virgin olive oil, divided

• 1/4 t salt

• 1 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano

• 12 oz boneless, skinless chicken breast • 1/4 cup thinly sliced garlic

• 6 cups chopped broccoli rabe

• 1/2 t crushed red pepper, to taste • 1/2 cup part-skin ricotta

• 1 T lemon juice

Preparation 1. P osition a rack in lowest position of oven; preheat to 425°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or coat with cooking spray. 2. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to about the size of the baking sheet; transfer to the prepared baking sheet. Bake until puffed and crisped on the bottom, 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, cut chicken in half lengthwise and then crosswise into thin strips. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until just starting to brown, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add the chicken, broccoli rabe (or broccolini or broccoli), lemon zest, crushed red pepper and salt; cook, stirring, until the chicken is just cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

• Freshly ground pepper, to taste

• 4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

Preparation 1. P reheat oven to 450° F. 2. P lace tomatoes cut-side up on a baking sheet. Top with Parmesan, oregano, salt and pepper. Drizzle with oil and bake until the tomatoes are tender, about 15 minutes.

4. When the crust is done, remove from the oven, flip it over and brush with the remaining 1 T oil. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken mixture to the crust and spread evenly. Combine ricotta and lemon juice and dollop all over the pizza. 5. Return the pizza to the oven until the crust is crispy on the bottom, 6 to 8 minutes more.

If desired, garnish with mint leaves and additional berries. Makes 9 servings. Make Ahead Tip: Prepare dessert as directed through Step 2. Cover and freeze for up to 1 week.

Of the 23 hummingbird species that have been seen in North America, only eight species travel considerably north of the Mexican border. In the Far West, seven species nest, four species nest in Canada, and only one species, the ruby-throated hummingbird, regularly nests in the eastern half of North America. There are six hummingbird species that breed in Nevada with four found in Northeastern Nevada. Hummingbirds are the smallest bird species in all of the bird families living in North America. The male bird of each species has a colorful gorget, which is the highly iridescent feathers around its throat and head which in bright lighting will appear to be metallic reds, pinks, purples and oranges. Their name is based on the fact that they can flap their wings about 80 times per second creating a humming noise. Their aerial acrobatics are unique in the bird world, being able to fly in any direction, even upside down and backwards. They also can hover flapping their wings in a figure eight pattern. The hummingbirdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feet are used for perching only. They are unable to hop or walk so they must rely on their agility in flight to access their food sources. Their specialized long and tapered bill is used to obtain nectar which composes from 75-90% of their diet. The rest of their diet is composed of insects which they capture in the air or glean off of plants. They need to eat up to three times their own body weight to survive. Females usually build their cup shaped nests in trees or shrubs from 10-90 feet high. They weave together twigs, plant fibers, lichen and bits of leave. They used spider silk as threads to hold their nests together and to attach them to branches. Hummingbird eggs are about the size of navy beans. Most females lay two eggs, which they incubate for 15-18 days. The juvenile birds will leave the nest (fledge) about 18 to 28 days after hatching. The BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD is very adaptable and found in a wide variety of habitats. They are common in urban areas with tall trees and flowering shrubs. They are also found in lowland deserts, forests and meadows, canyons and along rivers. Males have a thin throat band of purple (appears black in low light) bordering their black chin. White collar. Gray-green chest and belly. Black tail feathers.

BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD males have a rose to red gorget with a white chin and breast. This species prefers sub-alpine meadows, open pinyon-juniper woodlands, riparian and shrub habitats. Rarely seen in lower elevations. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD males have orange-rusty colors on their back and belly. Throat and chin have red-orange-gold iridescent feathers. Sometimes they have faint green forehead and shoulders. Reddish tail with black patches and white tips on the outer tail feathers. They are frequent visitors to nectar feeders during migration. They are most often seen during fall migration. They do not breed here. They are very vocal about protecting their territory and often seen and heard chasing other hummingbirds away.

CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS are the smallest breeding bird in North America. All other hummingbirds in our area have a solid gorget while this species has a streaky gorget. Male throats are streaked with white and purplish to red feathers that give it a whiskered effect. Gorget extends down the side of the neck. This species is found in coniferous forest in mountainous areas near springs with flowering plants in the understory. It can be found in urban areas at feeders during migration. The other hummingbirds found in Nevada are the Annaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hummingbird found along the Sierra Nevada Mountains and in Southern Nevada and the Costaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hummingbird found in Southern Nevada. The Elko County Art Club is a local non-profit organization that was first established in 1978 to promote and foster the visual arts in Elko and the surrounding areas. In addition to the club they have an art gallery at 407 Railroad Street in downtown Elko. The Gallery provides local artists with opportunities for exposure, growth, and the ability to connect with others in the community that appreciate, support and foster the arts. The ECAC Gallery features ongoing displays of artwork from its member artists as well as monthly exhibits from emerging and established non-member artists or Featured Guest Artists. Our gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 am to 5 pm. The public is welcome and encouraged to stop and shop their diverse collection of unique gifts and other fine art creations. You may know ECAC from one of its largest events and fundraisers, Elko Art in the Park. Hosted each year, hundreds of private crafters and vendors come from all over the area to sell their handmade goods and fine art. Another great program that ECAC runs and organizes is the Rotating Art Program. Local businesses, with wall space to spare, make a monetary donation to ECAC and get to display an original artwork throughout the year. Every quarter the art gets rotated to ensure artists get more exposure.

UNR Baseball and the Reigning Mountain West Player of the Year

Nevada’s D1 baseball team was going through quite the slump in the middle of April, getting swept by conference rival Fresno in a three game series. They also lost to Texas State, Sacramento State, and #9 Santa Barbara in consecutive games making their record move to 15-19 on the season. Honorable mentioned, two-way player, and reigning Mountain West player of the year Trenton Brooks, had this to say in regards to their losing streak before his game against Air Force on Saturday April 23rd. "Just recently this last weekend we obviously ran into a good team in Fresno, who had one dude who threw lower than 89 mph, so they have some arms. We played them well but it didn’t fall our way from a couple of moderate mistakes that we made. Then we played Santa Barbara, the #9 team in the country. We were winning the entire game until the bottom of the 8th inning. We made an error and they scored on it, and lost. We’re not far from breaking out of this losing streak we’re on. Baseball is such a momentum sport. When you win it’s easier to win; when you’re hitting well it’s easier to hit well. When you’re not it’s hard to pick it back up,” explained Brooks. Brooks continued, “all that matter’s is that we get hot at the right time. You probably saw that we won 41 games and didn’t even get an at-large bid into the regional last year. Based on

that we can go 10-and-40 this year but do really well in the Mountain West tournament and we make a regional. It’s really about who gets hot at the right time. Our coach was explaining this to us today, saying ‘you have to come on hot at the right time.’ And that’s what we’re working towards, getting a win today against Air Force and putting that momentum towards future games.” Brooks expresses his commitment to the program explaining how he and his teammates are listening to head coach, TJ Bruce, through this rough patch. Brooks’ optimism is clear throughout the interview expressing his confidence in his team heading into their next series against the Air Force Falcons. Brooks had this to say going into the series against Air Force. “They’re scrappy, very scrappy. This year currently they have their Friday guy who throws 94-95 mph. Then

their Saturday guy is a lefty who is 6’5, who throws 9495 mph as well. They’re just big ripped jacked dudes basically, and they probably have the best pitching staff in our conference.” But Air Force’s pitching staff wasn’t able to slow down the Wolf Pack on their route to get out of their slump. Nevada beat Air Force two out of three games in the series. Despite both teams finishing the series with 21 runs scored, Air Force did have 36 hits compared to Nevada’s 30 hits. Air Force also had more RBI (runs batted in) at 21 compared to Nevada’s 15. Nevada was able to skim past Air Force due to unearned runs. Brooks got the no-decision in his start on the mound in Sunday’s game against Air Force. He pitched 4 innings while giving up 7 hits and 3 runs. He also went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored twice in Sunday’s victory over

The Wolf Pack was able to carry this momentum going into their next game against UC Davis winning 4-to-5 in the bottom of the ninth inning due to an error. The final at-bat in the game was up to Brooks in the bottom of the ninth with runners in scoring position. Despite going 0-for-2 in his earlier at-bats in the game, Brooks was able to put the ball in play to the UC Davis’ second basemen who threw the ball off of second base resulting in the winning run coming home to score. Brooks finished the game 0-for-3 at the plate.

Brooks’ optimism is paying off. The Wolf Pack just finished a 3 game sweep over San Diego State increasing their overall record to 23-and-20, where Brooks went 7-for-9 with 5 RBI and 3 runs scored. We’re definitely starting to see the same player that won the Mountain West player of the year last year. Brooks had this to say about receiving the award a year earlier.

Brooks had this to say in regards to his performance following the game, “I knew that there was runners in scoring position: they’re gonna try and thumb me a little bit. Then I got down 0-2 and just tried to get a pitch I can handle. I saw the change-up well but was still out-front. I mean he threw it away and we won. It’s not what I envisioned, but it’s a win.” Despite going 5-for-18 in his four games against Air Force and UC Davis, Brooks explains that overcoming an early season injury has definitely put him back. “Well first I started off in the third inning of the first game. I dove for a ball and hyper-extended my elbow. It was a forearm, bicep, and tricep strain. I tried to play through that and it probably wasn’t the smartest thing. I tried to hit and I couldn’t swing. After the injury, next thing you know I’m like 6-for-50, which sucks. Not

It was an honor and I thought it was cool.” Now for the second season in a row Brooks is named to the top 24-watch list for two-way players in the nation and he is the only player from the Mountain West Conference to receive this honor. “ It’s an honor. It’s cool. I just saw that scrolling through my Twitter feed. But I try not to pay attention to that stuff. I just do whatever I can to help our team out right now,” said Brooks when asked about being on the top 24-watch list. Brooks doesn’t let the stress or attention of being on this list get to him. He repeatedly said in all interviews, “I just want to put my team in the best position to win,” expressing his love for his team.

The annual Lamoille Country Fair will give attendees the chance to experience the country charm of scenic Lamoille and wander among booths that bring unique handcrafted items from local and regional artists, as well as some out of state artists. These items will include original artwork, jewelry, dolls, furniture, stained glass, pottery, garden art, quilts, birdhouses, beadwork, metal art, soaps, and many other hand crafted items. The Fair is celebrating the 41st year of providing a day of shopping, visiting, relaxing, and a variety of food selections to entice ones desires. The food is so varied that everyone’s pallets will be tempted and delighted. The handcrafted offerings are unique and one of a kind. Come early and enjoy a refreshing Lamoille Women’s Club fresh made Lemonade and wander through the grove and then have a lunch from one of the many vendors and head to the tent area to eat and relax. NO admission is charged for this expanse of beauty and culinary delight. It is a longstanding and established custom to provide this event for no admission to the public. Bring your children as there are special events planned just for them. Our food vendors often cater to the many children and the Fair plans special rides and events for children as well as adults. In the past, ice cream cones and train rides have been particularly popular with the kids. Leave your pets at home as they are NOT allowed at this event. In years past the Lamoille Grove and the Lamoille Country Fair has entertained as many 10,000 Fair goers. This once-a-year event is a must. While visiting the Fair take a minute to get tickets for an opportunity to own the Lamoille Women’s Club Quilt, “RUBY STARS”, made by club member Joyce Kay and Quilted by Terry Bowers of Ruby Valley. Tickets are 1 for $1 or 6 for $5. The Lamoille Women’s Club will also be selling their cookbooks celebrating over 40 years of history and the Country Fair. Each cookbook is $15.

Parking is plentiful for the Country Fair. There is a parking lot on Country Lane and Lamoille Road, which is through Lamoille, across from O’Carroll’s. Turn left just after O’Carroll’s, continue on Country Lane about 200 hundred feet, past the Antique Store and right into the field. The handicap lot is on Country Lane a few feet and to the left. The Handicapped lot is clearly marked. Another parking option is in the center of Lamoille off of Primrose Lane to one’s right. Boy Scouts tend to both lots and are on site all day. Donations are accepted by the Boy Scouts. There is a Park N’ Ride option at Lamoille Canyon Road that includes a wagon service, pulled by old fashioned tractors, or a courtesy van is also available. The Lamoille Country Fair always provides a wonderful day everyone in the family. Food booths provide tacos, snow cones, drinks, pulled pork, roasted corn, popcorn and kettle corn. It has been a long established custom to provide this event at no admission fee for the public. The vendors and crafters provide an eclectic variety of wares and food for every individual. Many services are donated by our local businesses and the residents of Lamoille pitch in to make the day an event to remember. The Lamoille Women’s Club is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. All proceeds from this local event help the Lamoille Women’s Club provide scholarships for Spring Creek High School, Great Basin College, service projects for CADV, Veterans, and numerous donations to other worthy organization in the Elko - Lamoille area. Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get energy from food. T1D occurs in both children and adults and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is currently nothing you can do to prevent it. People with T1D must monitor their blood-sugar level 4-6 times per day, inject multiple times a day or receive insulin continuously through a pump, and carefully balance their insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes. Even with intensive disease management, a significant portion of their day is still spent with high or low blood-sugar levels, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation.

Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. People with T1D must take multiple injections of insulin daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump to stay alive. T1D occurs in both children and adults and lasts a lifetime. There is currently no cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disorder in which the body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively. T2D is usually diagnosed in adulthood, but many adolescents are now being diagnosed with it. T2D is controlled with healthy eating, sometimes pills and/or requires insulin injections.

Our Story Ashlynn was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 4. She has currently been living with the disease for 5 years. Type 1 Diabetes does not run in our families, so her diagnosis was a surprise to us, although many people diagnosed with Type 1 have no familial history. Before she was diagnosed, Ashlynn started demonstrating some of the common warning signs and symptoms of diabetes. She needed to use the bathroom frequently, was thirsty and hungry. We were out of town on vacation when Ashlynn was diagnosed with diabetes. We took her to the pediatrician where a simple finger stick test and urine test was completed and confirmed our suspicions. Typical blood glucose levels run from approximately 70-120 mg/dl. At diagnosis, Ashlynnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blood glucose level was 376. After diagnosis, we were sent directly to the hospital where we stayed for 2 days. During our stay we learned how to administer insulin shots, test blood glucose levels, and count carbohydrates to dose insulin. There was a great deal that we needed to learn to care for Ashlynn. We learned that there is no cure for diabetes, and so in order for Ashlynn to stay alive we would need to administer insulin and monitor her blood glucose levels closely.

- Difficult to heal recurrent infections (skin, urinary & genital tract) - Vision changes - Mood changes - Weight loss in a very short time - Impotency - Black skin around eyes and knuckles - Dry skin and/or mouth - Gum infection and/or disease - Bad breath

Know the Warning Signs/Symptoms of Diabetes Type 1 Diabetes is a life-threatening disease. If any of these signs or symptoms are being demonstrated, please talk to you medical care professional ASAP. Ashlynn currently wears an insulin pump that infuses insulin into her body 24 hours a day. It looks almost like a little IV. This site is changed every 2-3 days. She also wears a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that gives us updates on her blood glucose levels every 5 minutes. Ashlynn’s blood glucose levels are also checked by doing a finger prick on average of about 10 times a day and throughout the night. Her levels are checked and insulin is administered before she eats, she tests before, during and after exercising and at various other times as needed. Although Ashlynn has diabetes, she does not let it get her down! Ashlynn is just like every other 9 year old child, with the exception of being a little extra sweet and needing to put a little extra thought into caring for her blood glucose levels. Ashlynn loves to play all kinds of sports, she loves going to school and playing with her

friends. Ashlynn has the most positive attitude and lives her sweet life to the fullest, while making sure she takes care of her Diabetes. Ashlynn created a JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) walk team named Sweeties with Diabetes. Each year our team raises money and donates it to JDRF where the money is used to research treatment options and ultimately a cure. The walk occurs each Sept./Oct. in Reno, NV. Diabetes Facts and Myths Myth: T1D is caused by eating too much sugar or being obese.

Myth: People with diabetes can’t or shouldn’t eat sugar or sweets.

Fact: Sugar intake and obesity have nothing to do with the onset of T1D. While we still do not know exactly what triggers the onset of T1D, scientists believe that both genetic and environmental factors are involved.

Fact: While limiting sugar intake can be a part of a healthy diet, people with T1D can work sugars and sweets into their diets just like a person without T1D. Sometimes sugar is necessary. If a person’s blood-sugar level drops too much, sugar, often in the form of juice or glucose tables, is required to raise it and correct hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Myth: Only children are diagnosed with T1D. Fact: While children are the age group most frequently associated with T1D, formerly called “juvenile diabetes,” it is regularly diagnosed in teens, young adults and adults. You can develop T1D at any age. Myth: You can cure T1D by taking insulin.

Myth: Women with T1D shouldn’t get pregnant. Fact: Women with T1D regularly have healthy pregnancies and deliver healthy babies with planning and support.

Myth: T1D is contagious. Fact: T1D is not contagious. T1D does not spread from person to person, but families with a history of autoimmune diseases may have more than one family member with T1D. Myth: People with T1D will go blind. Fact: While some people with T1D have complications, many live with T1D for decades without any complications. Every person is different and some are more genetically predisposed to complications, but optimal control of blood sugar is proven to significantly lower the risk of complications. Myth: You can cure T1D with diet and exercise. Fact: There is no cure for T1D. Healthy eating and exercise can help people with T1D maintain better blood-glucose control, but there is no cure.

Wild Iris Yoga & Wellness Yoga for profit in a small community, like Elko, is a difficult proposition. That’s why a group of local yogis got together in early 2016 to form Wild Iris Yoga & Wellness Co-Op. It is cooperatively owned. The health, wellness and growth of members, the community, and our world are Wild Iris’s only goals. All monetary collection from classes, memberships, and workshops are used to maintain the co-op, pay the team, and re-invest in Wild Iris; after-which all money will be contributed to the betterment of our community or member scholarships. Yearly or quarterly memberships and monthly, daily and punch card passes are all available. Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice which originated in India. There is a broad variety of schools and practices. Among the most well-known types are Hatha yoga and Rāja yoga. There are several different varieties of both of these disciplines available in classes at Wild Iris for both kids and adults. Currently there are eleven classes available throughout the week by a staff of seven, certified yoga instructors. The wellness center at Wild Iris offers a variety of holistic healing techniques from several different wellness specialists. These include cranial sacral therapy, foot

zoning, aroma touch therapy, nutrition counseling, behavioral therapy and visceral manipulation. Other holistic healing practices are being added to the menu all the time. Wellness workshops and classes are also part of Wild Iris’s mission. A recent workshop called Spring Detox was offered to inform members how to thoughtfully control what comes in and out of their bodies. Instructors, Blake and Sarah Sue Myers, who own Journey Medicine, are part of Wild Iris’s wellness team. Future workshops will include meditation techniques, yoga nedra, mommy and me wellness, book club and more. Wild Iris is operated by a board of directors which over see business operations. The board has a goal to gift the community with yoga as well as contribute to positive energy and growth in Elko. They plan to take yoga on the road to schools, kids groups and senior care facilities. They are active in downtown community clean-up and promotion and are hoping to put together a free wellness directory for the entire area. These are just a few ideas that have been proposed by members so far. Any positive, inspired ideas to better the center or our community are always welcome.

Using his medical training as a Physician Assistant/Registered Sonographer, Troy scans the arteries of patients who want to know their TRUE RISK of heart/vascular disease. TRUE RISK is highlighted because unless you look at the arteries with an ultrasound beam, risk of disease is always a guess. LOCAL CANCER CENTER CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY BY GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITY In the year since Northeastern Nevada Radiation Oncology Center (NNROC) opened their doors, the staff has helped many patients to spend less time traveling to and from their cancer treatments. Brian Hulse says the patients who touch the staff the most are the ones who tell them that if the center in Elko did not exist, they would not have sought treatment for their cancer at all. “Those patients are the most humbling for us,” says Hulse, lead therapist and manager of the cancer center. “When we realize that these patients just could not have made the trip out of town for treatment, for financial or other reasons, we just want to work harder to get the word out: ‘We’re here. You don’t have to spend six weeks away from home. Let us help you.'”

WHAT’S REALLY CAUSING YOUR

Back Pain? When back pain happens to you, it’s a far cry from enjoyable. And while no one likes to

experience it, the pain itself is actually quite common. In fact, nearly every adult in the

world has experienced back pain at some

point during his or her life. But in many cases, back pain doesn’t actually begin in your back. So, where does it start? Take a look at a few options that could be responsible for your back pain.

Back pain often begins in other parts of the body. HIP MISALIGNMENT Do you ever feel like you’re taking uneven steps? Frequently carrying a heavy bag to one side, poor posture, and not wearing supportive shoes can all contribute to hip misalignment leading to low back pain. Misaligned hips often begin as a result of weak back, core or pelvis muscles and uneven shoe wear. Many even have one leg shorter causing structural problems for the spine. TEXT-NECK In today’s world, it seems that we’re all guilty of spending at least some amount of time each day looking down at our smart phones or tablets. Unfortunately, too much of this downward tilt can cause pain in your neck from over-stretching tissue and muscles, eventually leading to spinal misalignment. Back pain as a result of text-neck is a compensation reaction, with the real issue being the neck.

Teenagers and younger children face the highest risk for suffering from symptoms of text-neck. PROLONGED SITTING If you spend most of your day behind a desk, you could find yourself sitting for hours on end without much movement. Prolonged sitting compresses the spine and increases stress on the back, legs, arms and even neck. To combat back pain caused by long periods of sitting, set an alarm to remind yourself to get up and move every hour or better yet every 20 minutes. Choosing an ergonomic chair, keyboard, and mouse pad for your work space can also benefit your health.

Who should call?

Anyone who will be digging, excavating, drilling, trenching, grading, etc. is encouraged to call 811 BEFORE they dig. If you are a propane customer, please contact your local propane energy supplier in addition to 811.

How far in advance do I need to call? You are required to notify the utilities involved at least two to three working days in advance of your excavation project. What Questions will I be asked when I call? • Your name • Your address, including the county • Contact information (phone and email) • Dig site information • Start date and time • Has your excavation site been premarked • Premark method used • Type and nature of work to be done • Will excavation enter into street or sidewalk area • Were you required to get any permits How do I Premark my worksite? White is the only color identifier that is recognized for proposed excavation. When premarking your proposed worksite the use of white paint is the industry standard; however, other acceptable methods include white stakes, white flags, white whiskers, white chalk and even white baking flour.

Spring is in full swing and summer is just around the corner which means everyone is anxious to get started on all those outdoor improvements. This time of year means projects ranging from trenching in lines for a sprinkling system, putting in a fence, building a deck, planting a tree, or grading your property to get ready for landscaping. You feel like you’re ready to dig but first remember you need to do it safely. Have you ever considered what lies below the surface? Our communities are full of below ground infrastructure which makes modern life more enjoyable. So, what lies beneath? Propane gas lines, natural gas lines, electricity distribution, cable TV, telecommunication, power cables for traffic lights and street lights, storm drains, water mains, waste water pipes, and fiber optics. How do you know it is safe to dig? It’s easy! If you are going be digging, excavating, drilling, trenching, or grading you need to first call 811. 811 is a national three digit service number which can be called throughout the United States to notify utility service providers of your intent to dig. When you call 811, your call is routed to the regional notification center for your area. Then your information is communicated with the affected utility companies who serve you. It is important to note that not all propane suppliers are members of USA North, and therefore they may not be notified by 811. Make sure you contact your propane supplier directly regarding your plans to dig.

Who marks utility lines? When you submit a request to dig, USA North 811 will contact the utility members in the area of your dig. Once notified, the utility members will take care of marking their lines. Your local propane supplier will come out and mark your propane lines. When can I start digging? You can start your project once all utility providers have positively responded to your dig request. What colors will my utility providers use? Below is a list of colors utility providers will use to mark their underground lines at your proposed dig site: • White = Proposed Excavation • Red = Electric • Orange = Communication • Purple = Reclaimed Water/Irrigation • Pink = Temporary Survey • Yellow = Gas • Blue = Water • Green = Sewer/Storm Drain Remember, know what’s below. Newmont’s Carlin’s Underground Mine Rescue Team took the top honors at the 12th Annual Nevada Underground Mine Rescue contest, held in late March in Winnemucca, Nevada. Nine teams from around the western region competed in the event; Colorado School of Mines, Barrick Cortez, Barrick Goldstrike, Barrick Turquoise Ridge, Klondex Mines, Newmont Carlin, Hecla Limited, Solvay Chemicals, and South Dakota School of Mines. The competition was presented by the Nevada Mine Rescue Association in cooperation with the Nevada Mining Association and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Newmont’s Carlin Underground Mine

Rescue Team was the overall winner of the competition. Their first place wins in the Field, First Aid, and Team Trainer categories, and second place win in the Team Technician category led them to cinching the overall win. Congratulations to the Carlin Underground Mine Rescue Team on their victory, which is the fruit of a lot of intensive training and hard work! Also, thank you to all Newmont Mine Rescue and Emergency Response team members for their hard work and dedication to safety.

A lot of the kids have issues with anger, or other impulsive behaviors that the two counselors help them manage and overcome. “I have hope for these kids!” Cheryllyn said she wakes up every day ready to help them “I don’t want them to come back, and a lot of them don’t want to.”

Kristina said “Cheryllyn is amazing. She has made a career out of helping young kids who have lost their way and need help and support. She listens to EVERYONE and helps anyone who needs it. She is one of those people who would literally give the shirt off of her back! Cheryllyn is a mental health counselor at the Nevada Youth Training Center and has lived in Elko for 7 months! Cheryllyn has been a youth counselor for 5 years and when a position opened up at NYTC she leaped at the opportunity and applied. When Cheryllyn got news she got the job she packed up her things and left Las Vegas behind and made her way to Elko! Cheryllyn said that she has always wanted to help teens and was drawn to youth counseling. She wanted to help kids cope with life and teach them how to overcome their issues so when she went back to school she knew she wanted to become a youth counselor. She is very passionate about counseling troubled youth “It’s important to me to be an advocate for them. People see these kids and they automatically think they’re bad kids! But I tell them all the time that they aren’t bad kids, they are just kids who made some bad choices.” Cheryllyn and one other counselor split the three dorms at NYTC. They meet with each child to

“People are so friendly here! I love the openness, it’s not like in the city, and there are so many things to do here!” I asked Cheryllyn if she could share any advice or wisdom with our community what it would be, she said “Be kind to each other…a little kindness goes a long way!” There is nothing greater than encountering individuals that are completely passionate about what they do, Cheryllyn is without a doubt one of those individuals. It is crucial to have people like Cheryllyn counseling our youth and helping them change their lives for the better. These kids are at such a vulnerable age, and a vulnerable situation for that matter! Without the right people in your corner cheering you on it’s easy to revert back to poor behaviors. Granted, everyone does have a choice. But, imagine people telling you you’re bad or that you aren’t going to change, it wouldn’t exactly motivate one to do so.

It’s people like Cheryllyn that are the light for troubled youth, a beacon of hope. They are their sole supporter, their cheerleader…and it is Cheryllyn that makes a difference daily and gives these kids faith, strength to change and provides them with the tools necessary to be successful functioning members of society. Thank you Cheryllyn for being passionate about what you do, for choosing to make a difference and working with our troubled youth and being in their corner. What you do is not easy and isn’t always well received but knowing your purpose and pursuing it daily has not gone unnoticed. You are completely deserving of being one of our Good Neighbor and we are so lucky to have you as a part of our community. Congratulations! Summer time is almost upon us! Those lovely warm days, weekends spent at the lake or hiking with our families, and taking our best friends out for a good time exploring unknown destinations. We always pack water, ensure that we’re dressed appropriately, and prepare for unforeseen events, like heat exhaustion. For those of us that have had heat stroke, or heat exhaustion, we all know the unpleasant effects of this lapse of our better judgement. Unfortunately, our 4-legged friends experience this same horrible feeling that we humans do. An elevated body temperature of greater than 103° is considered hyperthermia, and body temperatures of 106° or greater, without previous clinical signs, are considered heat stroke. If the internal body temperature stays at this temperature, or climbs any higher, organ failure or even death are imminent, and your pet is now in a life threatening crisis. The most common way our pets are exposed to this crisis is by lack of their common sense, our neglect in providing them with an appropriate summer time habitat, and enforcing a limit to their activities. For our very excited, intensely active dogs, we can all agree that they just do not know when to stop. Short, controlled bouts 90

of energy are appropriate, as is making sure that our working/hunting dogs are appropriately trained, hydrated, and nutritionally capable of handling this sort of exposure before summer months. The older or out-of-shape pets of ours are perhaps the ones we need to worry most about. In addition to their heart already having to work hard, we are also asking them to oxygenate their blood, keep cool, and keep up at the same time. It is often in scenarios of long days spent alone in the back yard without shade, or afternoons in the elements that we can expect to see these patients slip into heat exhaustion. And just a reminder… NEVER leave your pet unattended in vehicle during our summer months. Just being left alone for 15 minutes in a vehicle can bring your pet’s internal temperature to hyperthermic levels, and become a stage of emergency. Clinical signs of heat exhaustion include shallow/rapid panting accompanied by rapid heartrate, trembling/ wobbly movements/collapse, vomiting, and dark red mucous membranes/ profuse drooling. The signs can be addressed immediately by you, during transport of your pet in for an urgent care exam. Pouring cool (not cold) water over the head, armpits, and

feet, or applying wet cloths to these areas, is an appropriate intervention on your part. Rubbing alcohol can be sprayed on the pads of all feet, as well as cool air blown over the patient while they are laying calmly. Only allow your pet to drink small amounts of cool water at intervals, and keep them quiet until they are breathing more calmly and their temperature has come down to 100-102°.

The internal impact of this prolonged elevation in temperature will be determined by your veterinarian. Most pets will likely recover quickly, if appropriate intervention occurs in time. Secondary effects of hyperthermia and heat stroke can be life threatening, and your pet can even be made more susceptible to subsequent episodes of heat stroke due to their already compromised thermoregulatory system.
