California Trail Days
May 18-19
May will be a busy month at the California Trail Interpretive Center located at the junction of the infamous Hastings Cutoff and the California Trail eight miles west of Elko on I-80 at Hunter Exit 292. California Trail Days is a free annual event at the California Trail Interpretive Center that celebrates the people whose lives were impacted by the westward movement. Trail Days will take place May 18-19. The theme of this year’s event is Music. Los Californios will be performing lively traditional music of the pre-gold rush era. Vivian and Phil Williams, champion fiddle players, will be on hand to play tunes of the pioneer era. Also appearing at the wagon camp will be a hurdy gurdy player, a 19th century doctor, historic fire arm demonstrations, Dutch oven cooking, gold panning and more. On Saturday night there will be a free dance for the community. A good time will be had by all!

Visitors will be able to see the recently installed Great Basin murals showing the native perspective. Hike, accessible trails, walk through a wagon encampment and see a Shoshone village. Hear the words of the pioneers and learn of the successes of the Bidwell-Bartleson party and the events that lead to the Donner Party disaster. Come see the Elephant at the California Trail Interpretive Center where History Comes Alive.
youth workshops Mountain Man Mini Rendezvous - Learn about the mountain men who trapped in this area in the 1820s and 1830s. They were rugged individuals who traveled in groups while living off the land and living among the natives. Participants will take a hike on the Trail Center’s nature trails using a compass to guide their way as the early trappers did. In addition, kids will learn about journaling and see and feel pelts of animals trapped in the Humboldt Valley. See demonstrations on knife and hatchet throwing, fire starting and weapons of the early 1800s. Be a Pioneer Kid - What was it like to be a pioneer kid traveling along the California Trail in the 1840s & 1850s? For the most part, it was a fun six month long camping trip. Kids, then as now, were expected to help out with chores. Learn how to pack your family’s wagon, fetch water with a water yoke, do laundry the old fashioned way, pull a hand cart and pan for gold. Native Ways - Shoshones were living in the Humboldt Valley for thousands of years before the arrival of the whites in the 1820s. They lived on the land, moving seasonally and from food source to food source. Learn about native social dances, flint knapping, and native foods. Try some native youth games. In addition, kids will help with our ongoing project of building a Shoshone summer camp.

Recipe Notes…ganache sounds like a fancy, difficult thing, but super easy! A mixture of fine chocolate melted in hot cream with a little butter swirled in makes a ganache. Ganache pours nicely while warm, and hardens as it chills. With any leftovers, scoop balls of chilled ganache into truffly-sized morsels. Roll them in sugar, dust with cocoa powder, or dip them in coating chocolate.

You don’t have to be an expert baker to produce a beautiful cake that’s gorgeous to the eye and palate. In recent years, cupcakes and cake balls have garnered all of the attention to the point where a layered cake is now novel and new again!
Start with a good recipe…the right recipe determines how easy it will be to decorate, how well it keeps, and, of course, how good it tastes. Most grocery store boxed cake mixes tend to yield a fragile, dry cake with a chemical taste.
Use top notch ingredients…There are so few ingredients in a cake that the quality of each item will make a difference in the flavor and outcome. Use fresh leaveners (baking soda, baking powder), fresh eggs, excellent butter, quality chocolate, and the best pure vanilla you can afford.
Prep the pan properly…A great looking cake depends on its successful removal from the pan. Prep the pan in two steps:
Choose a batter pan…Equip yourself with quality cake baking pans that are light in color and sturdily constructed. A good baking pan will not bend or warp when exposed to heat, and will have a rim that’s easy to grip with oven mitts. Get creative with cake baking pans—try ramekins, oven safe stoneware, and other unique shapes.

1. Generously butter the bottom sides of the cake pan. (or use a tasteless oil such as, canola oil).
3. For white cakes use flour for dusting, for chocolate cakes, use cocoa powder.
2. Dust the pan with flour so that it coats all the surfaces; tap out any excess flour.
4. Sift the dry ingredients together. This step removes lumps and distributes dry ingredients evenly.
Mix the batter according to the recipe… The cake’s texture is formed at the batter stage.
5. Mix until evenly combined, but no more. Strain the batter to remove lumps instead of stirring. Too much stirring will deflate the air bubbles already formed in the batter. 6. Fill the cake pans half to two-thirds full depending the recipe. Place in a pre-heated oven on racks that have been previously leveled. Bake the Cake…Close the door, set the timer, and do not open the oven to peek at the cake. A quick peek at the wrong time can prove disastrous for a cake. An open oven door can quickly drop the oven’s temperature 25-50 degrees. This temperature drop stops the expansion of the batter’s air bubbles and can deflate the cake if the structure has not yet been baked in.
Test for doneness…At the end of baking, test the cake for doneness. The center of the cake should spring back when touched lightly with a fingertip. Or insert a toothpick or bamboo skewer in the center; it should come out cleanly, or with only a few crumbs. If the toothpick is wet with batter, the cake needs to bake longer; test again in another 5-10 minutes.
Cool the cake…Fresh out of the oven, a cake can be quite fragile. Cool the cake in stages. With the right recipe and proper pan preparation, the cake should fallout easily and intact.
7. Allow the pan to cool on top of a cooling rack for 10-20 minutes, or until the pan is comfortable to handle without a hot pad. 8. Run the blade of an offset spatula or the back of a thin knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the sides of the cake. Invert the cake on the cooling rack and tap lightly on the bottom until the cake drops out of the pan. 9. Continue allowing the cake to cool until it reaches room temperature, then chill for an hour prior to frosting.

The combination of flavors in this cake are out of this world! Yellow cakes are usually not a favorite of ours, but this hot milk cake recipe has changed our minds. The cake has just a hint of caramel taste while being very moist. A wisp of fresh lemon graces the vanilla buttercream base while a simple lemon syrup and lemon curd filling provide some zing between the layers. The cake handled well and assembled easily.

– the cake, simple syrup, filling, and buttercream frosting – you may wish to tackle it in stages. Make the cake, syrup and filling one day, and the buttercream the next. We had our best luck with this cake when we used cake flour, (a low gluten, bleached flour), measured the flour by weight, and reduced the baking powder by one half.
The Miette bakery presents 6-inch cakes – sounds small, but given the richness of the cake, a 6-inch cake serves 8 people easily!
5. Pipe a ring of frosting around the edge of the cake. This will contain any filling being used and prevent the layers from sliding around.
6. Apply any filling being used; spreading it evenly within the ring of frosting. Apply a layer of frosting on top of the filling. Apply the next layer and repeat.
Frosting the cake… Ice your celebration cake in three stages; the crumb coat, the final coat, and the embellishments.
7. Brush away any crumbs with a dry pastry brush. Along the sides and top of the cake, apply a thin layer of frosting. Known as the “crumb coat,” this thin coating captures any loose crumbs in the frosting and creates an optimal surface for a clean second coat of frosting. Chill the cake after applying the crumb coat and allow it to become firm.

One cake is split into three layers and reassembled with frosting layers. Fresh raspberries are used to flavor the buttercream to delicious perfection. 8. For the final frosting layer, start with a generous amount of frosting in the center top of the cake, begin pushing and smoothing the frosting into an even layer on top. Use the excess frosting pushed to the edges to begin coating the sides of the cake. Smooth the frosting around the sides to cover the cake completely.
9. Using a pastry bag filled with frosting ad various tips, pipe frosting in decorative swags, stars, leaves, and petals, or simple swirls with a knife or the back of a spoon.

Place a coupler in the tip of the bag to provide a firm structure for the decorating tips. A coupling ring screws onto the assembly to keep it all intact.

2. Scoop a large dollop of frosting from the mixing bowl into the bag. Some find that standing the bag upright in a tall drinking glass assists in the process. Do not overfill the bag or it will become too difficult to squeeze.

Eggs, eggs and more eggs. It has been a little over 6 months now that our family has started the “Backyard Chicken Project” and I am happy to say that the four hens we have are healthy and as far as I can tell happy. The great thing about this project is that hens actually do make great pets and are relatively easy to keep. Our biggest concern is mostly predators and hope that that will never be an issue, which I am sure at one point one might slip by. On a more positive and happy note, my two daughters just adore them, have adopted them and have created what seems like a daily ritual now. They go out “hunt” for eggs (It’s Easter every day at our house!), play with them, run after them and usually get about 3 to 4 eggs a day right now. Some odd days we will only get 2, but for the most part we average 3. Now to the really good stuff, the eggs! It is something else to be able to get an egg that is still actually warm, it was laid that recently, and be able to cook it up. The eggs are really pretty, the flavor and composition is exactly what you would expect from a farm egg and the best thing is I know what they eat, I know what they do and I clean the coop myself.
That is the interesting thing, I had no clue… chickens eat anything… and like any pet, they actually do have favorites… My hens don’t like celery, they love raisins, go crazy for bread, like melon if it is off the rind. It is fun to see what they will and will not eat. Strangely enough, no chocolate and avocados are a big NO. It will actually kill them. Like I said over all it was worth getting them, they have become a part of the family and they are finally pulling their weight around here! Lol! Now I do have one word of caution, or a reality check… if your sole motivation is to save money, I would say that first you have to compare what is comparable. Don’t just look at 18 generic eggs at the store for two bucks and think you can save money. You are raising hens and feeding them good real food, that will be a different egg so you are looking at real organic free range eggs. That is one side, I still don’t think you will be saving money in the short term. Maybe down the road pennies on the dollar at best. The real benefit is your families’ health, a great life lesson for your kids and having a bit of control over what you actually eat. Also something to consider, our hens didn’t start laying eggs till they were about 5 ½ months, but like I said it has been a fun little journey for the whole family. All in all we are very happy we did it, and enjoy breakfast and eggs all week long. They are such a great ingredient to add to your diet. As a cook I have always been amazed that this little egg can be cooked and transformed in so many different ways. Custard, hard meringues, soft meringue tarts, deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs, scrambled, baking… thickening of some sauces… the list is just amazing.

Thinking outside the box is a widely used metaphor meaning to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new prospective. I thought it would be fun to bring you drinks that are consumed in a slightly unconventional manner. New Age Vino Bianco is fun to drink. This wine is slightly effervescent, fresh, and full of flavor. New Age is from Mendoza, Argentina and comes from Bodega Valentin Bianchi, one of Argentina’s oldest wineries, founded in 1928, by Valentin Bianchi. Valentin Edwardo Bianchi, thirdgeneration winery owner, was given the nickname “Tincho” as a boy, a term of affection, loosely translated, means “Young Valentin.” (His grandfather was “older Valentin”). When “Tincho” first added the lime and the rocks to New Age, a new cocktail was born. The Tincho quickly became popular in restaurants, bars and nightclubs in Buenos Aires. This Argentinian tradition has caught on in the United States.
Ob s c u r e b e e r s are fun and fascinating. Wells and Young Brewing Company was founded in Bedford, UK in 1875 by Charles Wells, a retired Merchant Marine. The life of a Merchant Marine was a lonely one so Charles purchased a brewery and 32 pubs. The brewery still uses techniques that Charles Wells put in place over 100 years ago. They brew many different styles of beers. Young’s Double Chocolate Stout is an award

winning brew with many medals over the years. This stout is decadent and luxurious without delivering an overly sweet taste. The Lindeman family have been brewing and farming since 1811, in Vlezenbeek, Brussels. Lambics are their specialty and are the only beers fermented via wild, airborne yeast. No yeast is added by brewers. Lambics come only from the Senne River Valley, near Brussels, a region about 15 by 75 miles in size. Long before hops were common in most beers, various fruit and vegetables were used to season beers. The acidity of Lambic style beers blend perfectly with raspberries creating Lindeman’s Framboise. Lindeman’s Framboise has a magnificent aroma of raspberries. The palate tastes of a raspberry explosion with undertones of fruity acidity. The finish is sparkling and clean. When these two beers come together, they create a wonderful liquid delight. The aromatic beauty of Lindeman’s Framboise infuses in beautiful harmony with Young’s Double Chocolate Stout. Both of these beers are wonderful by themselves, but when combined, be prepared to swoon! The recipe is an easy one; mix 4 parts Young’s Double Chocolate Stout to 1 part Lindeman’s Framboise and enjoy! In 209 BC, The Roman Legions conquered the city of Quart Hadas. The Legions discovered a wonderful, exquisite liqueur made from local fruits and herbs. The legend states that Romans became superstitious of the liqueur and banned it from being produced. However, the locals continued to make it in secret. Little by little, this liqueur became popular in the Roman Society. They called the elixer “Liqueur Mirabilis” which means marvelous liqueur. The Roman’s even exported to other Mediterranean Cities within the Roman Empire.

My two daughters have a weakness… and I usually indulge them, it is: Hot Chocolate. We have tried several brands from Hershey’s syrup to high end chocolate like Silly Cow Farms… they love it all. Right now we mix it up the normal way and they love it, so why change something that works right? Why add more money to something that doesn’t need to change. One day we came across the Keurig Milk Frother. Oh my… if we thought they loved hot cocoa before we were mistaken. This little frother doesn’t look like much, it comes on a stand, has a little shuttle with a lid that has a little stem. If you ask me the whole things does seem fairly flimsy and for $100 I wouldn’t expect more. I have read a lot of people that have had it break quickly on them, but we have been using ours for about a month now and it still works. I would hope so really. But who knows at this point.

The principle is easy and this is what kids love about it… it is a simple touch button, you basically poor the milk to the line, close the lid put the little shuttle on it’s dedicated stand and press the button. A couple of seconds later you have perfectly frothed milk. We stir in chocolate and VOILA! So is it cool? Yes. Does it do what it is supposed to? Perfectly. Is it going to last forever,( like I said seems flimsy)? I sure hope so, but I do have my doubts. Do you really really need it? Well hrm that’s a tough one, my chocoholics here do, my wife likes it on her coffee too. So I guess. Could I have spent $95 in a better way? For sure. So I am going to give it one Thumbs up, just for the price and for the fact that right now I just don’t know if it will last. The price seems high for something that might break in a couple of months. Time will tell. Till then I know it will be used daily and I have 3 happy ladies at home.

Spring weather is fickle. The day may start out clear and sunny and before you know it, snow is falling. Be sure to pack extra layers of clothing, including socks. Is there anything worse than cold, wet feet? Heading up into the mountains? You’ll most likely encounter snow. And where there is snow in the mountains, avalanches are always a risk. Check your local avalanche forecast before heading out. In a word, spring hiking is wet. Rivers may be low in the morning, but can be high by afternoon and roads are muddy. Snow is melting and rain is often falling. Be wary of wet surfaces, stream crossings and muddy roads. Be especially wary of rising waters and flash floods. Warm spring days and spring storms can cause very sudden rises in water levels. Pitch your tent well above the highwater mark even if it means a longer walk to the stream, or a slightly less impressive view. If you’re in a campground with designated sites, be sure to think through grabbing that sweet riverfront site. Just because they’re designated, doesn’t mean they’re safe for spring time camping.

Speaking of wet, remember the old adage, “cotton kills.” While it’s great to have a cotton t-shirt or sweatshirt to slip on after the hike, wet cotton clothes rob the body of heat and take a long time to dry out. Be sure to wear synthetic clothes appropriate for the sport and conditions you’re experiencing. If you’re a paddler, don’t forget that if the air temperature and water temperature aren’t more than 100 when added together, hypothermia is a real concern if you get wet. Probably best to wait for a sunny day, or at the least, be sure to bring some dry clothes and fire starter in your dry bag should you go for a swim. Joints, muscles, and lungs may have also been hibernating over the winter along with the bears. Don’t start out on a 20 miles trail run if you haven’t been running in months. Be sure to warm up slowly and stretch when you’re done. This goes for peak-bagging, paddling, biking, or any other sport. Work up to longer outings so you don’t injure yourself and miss the rest of the summer. Check out your gear. Remember that last camp out of the season? The one where the fuel nearly ran out, it rained the morning you broke camp, and you discovered a hole in your sleeping pad. Well, if you’re like most of us, the fuel canister is likely still empty, the tent likely reeks of mildew, and the pad is still punctured. Spend an evening examining, cleaning, and fixing your gear before you head into the wild with a broken tent pole or busted stove. If you’re bringing kids or a newbie, this is especially important. Speaking of kids and newbies, start easy early in the season. Maybe the three night backpack you’ve been dreaming of all winter isn’t the best early season trip for your new sweetie. Start with something easier and adopt a positive attitude. Remember, you want this person to like camping, hiking, paddling, trail running, or whatever. Share your experiences and expertise! If you see someone who looks in over their head, who is obviously exhausted, or who is setting up camp in an obvious flood zone when thunderstorms are in the forecast, politely suggest they take a rest, share some of your water, or find a safer place to camp. You don’t have to be a know it all to help someone out.

Chasing the Snow off the Mountains S pring W ildflower H unting in E lko C ounty
By the Ides of March, the Ruby Mountains are often blanketed in a snowy reminder of the winter just past. But in many lower mountain ranges, and in our vast expanses of rangelands and foothills, native wild lands have already slowly, but surely begun the spring awakening. This begins the start of Elko County’s wildflower season which will continue strongly through summer to its wind down in late August. In late May the “bloom will be on” as wildflower lovers are want to say, so grab a pack, a willing dog or two and head out to explore a wonderfully diverse landscape. The Nevada Natural Heritage Program website ( http://heritage.nv.gov) records 314 named mountain ranges, separated by valleys or basins. Scattered throughout these valleys and bordering foothills are a portion of the trees, shrubs, and wildflowers that make up the 2,800 native species of flowering plants found in Nevada. This incredible diversity gives Nevada a ranking of 10th most botanically diverse state in the nation. Just as the true nature of the oceans is only revealed by diving beneath the surface, the same must be said of our own “sagebrush sea.” Whether bluegreen waves of water or shrubs, both seemingly supporting just a scattering of life, these waves are but masks and invitations to enter and explore ecosystems resplendent in life, color, and diversity. Exploring our sagebrush “sea” in the spring is an adventure that can be tailored to just about anyone. Some of our early spring displays can be reached by travelling primarily on state roadways. The Adobe Range just north of Elko has several excellent spring wildflower spots. Also too, Mary’s Mountain off of Interstate 80 near Carlin yields many great finds. In late May, the hills, valleys, and meadows east of Wildhorse Reservoir are wonderfully representative of the richness of our native flora. If the roads are dry enough for a little off-highway travel, then exploration choices are virtually limitless.

When scouting for a good spring wildflower spot, look for south-facing hillsides. It is there you will find wild onions, spring parsleys, and daggerpods pushing up through the warming, and probably rocky hilltops. Other slopes, perhaps clinging to snow patches will yield violet buttercups in full bloom with violets, phlox, balsamroots, and paintbrushes following behind. In lower creek-side areas, sagebrush buttercups will give a bright yellow greeting, soon to be followed by blue violets, prairie stars, death camas, and wonderfully flowering golden currants. As the season progresses, meadows will display paintbrushes, purple-eyed grass, elephant heads, iris, and mules ears while hill tops will flower with buckwheat, bitter root, and hedgehog cactus. Stay on the lookout for sego lilies, rosy pussytoes, and all of our remarkable wild onions and lupine. If time allows for repeated adventures, you will discover that your eyes begin to recognize more and more shapes and colors. You will find that it is not uncommon to see a dozen or more different wildflowers all on the same excursion. On a day such as this, it would be a good time to consider that every plant you see around you has a name and a story. Take for example one of the earliest wildflowers, “violet buttercup,” better referred to by its botanical name Ranunculus andersonii. The common name denotes that it is a violet-tinged member of the buttercup genus and buttercup family. The botanical name of this species is a two-part name denoting its genus (Ranunculus) and specific epithet “andersonii.” Ranunculus derives from Latin and means “little frog,” a reference to many members of the genus growing in wet, marshy habitats. Andersonii honors Dr. Charles Lewis Anderson, a 19th century surgeon and botanist who collected extensively in Nevada. Violet buttercup was first collected in Nevada in 1902 by L.N. Goodding and collected in Elko County in 1941 by A.H. Holmgren. Photographs of this species and many others can be found on the CALPHOTOS website http://Calphotos.berkeley.edu/flora/ . As you set out for what I hope are many great adventures, please show your appreciation of this wonderful landscape by being a good neighbor and a good steward of the land. Ask permission as needed when wishing to access private property and close all gates! Memories of your trip are best recorded on film, and not by bringing home wildflower cuttings. In these times of ravaging fires, we need all of our native flowers maturing to set seed so that future generations might continue to enjoy and respect this landscape that we call home.

As it is with any design, the best starting point is to have the intent/purpose of the container garden in mind prior to shopping for a DIY container and plants, for plants to fill a container you all ready have, or for an all ready assembled container garden from the nursery.
examples of intent/purpose for your container garden. • Screening: Don’t underestimate the value of vinyl lattice panels since they’re easy to install and maintain and can be left up through the changing seasons. A formal design could include mirror, vertical plantings on each end. Another screening tactic is the use of short walls to divide areas. They can be topped with windowbox style containers using medium height plants down the center edged with slightly trailing varieties. • Wide steps can be flanked on both sides with mirrored plantings while narrow steps only need a set on either side. A deck or patio area with steps can also be an opportunity to include a threesome of pots. Threesome designs usually have a large, medium, and smaller pot with at least one of the same plant variety and color in each pot to provide continuity.

• Table top containers are often bowl-shaped with varieties that bubble rather than being tall or vigorous trailing varieties. Bubbles are easier for guests to chat without view obstruction. •G rowing vegetables and herbs in containers has lots of advantages over in ground planting, but there are some guidelines to follow. Tomato plants get big and have equally big root systems, so they need big, 20”+ pots to thrive. Peppers, though smaller, also benefit from the space for roots to thrive. Flowers and vegetables that need pollination are a natural and beautiful combination. Most herbs flower, so they provide for all the senses.
Size, color, shape, and what the container is made from, all affect the ease of maintenance along with the number of and varieties that will be the best. • Plastic containers are inexpensive, durable, light-
weight and available in an array of shapes, colors, and sizes. Wood and pottery both look great, but otherwise, have limited attributes; consider using an insert or liner. Large containers, 20”+, hold more water and will need to be watered less frequently. Though costly to fill initially, keep in mind that a quality container mix can be left in the pot and re-used for several years. Whichever type of container you choose, all containers need to have drainage for excess water to escape.
• Pot colors affect the color of the flowers and foliage used. Dark green foliage stands out visually when planted in a light colored pot, likewise white and pastels are more dramatic when planted in pots with dark shades. There will be color combinations you find yourself drawn to and those you avoid, this is strictly a personal preference, but one to be aware of. • Tall, narrow pots look best with tall, narrow plants towards the back or center framed by a ring of fillers or in a threesome pattern that flows from top to bottom. Pots with equal height-to-depth, look great with upright, medium height plants. Pots that are bowlshaped, look good with plants that bubble rather than vigorous trailers. While container garden plants can be closely spaced, each will need some space for the root system to grow.
Choosing the right plants for your container garden. • Plants with similar light, soil, and water requirements are a starting point. Shopping with a list of possibilities from our website Availability List or with a picture from a magazine or catalog that appeals to you are also ways to increase your chances of finding the right plants. Whether using annuals or perennials, bloom and foliage colors are by personal preference, but your choices should be guided by the container attributes mentioned earlier. • The number of plants you’ll need is a simple math solution determined by the size of the container garden and the size(s) of the pots your choices are growing in. Though the plants can be planted fairly close together, remember that the plants, especially those that grow vigorously, will need room around each root ball for optimal growth.

Use of a light, porous, quality potting mix formulated for growing plants in containers to increase root development. • Quality mix has two major components: Peatmoss, to absorb and release water and nutrients, and Perlite, to evenly distribute water from top to bottom and provide needed oxygen to the roots. Amendments may include: Compost, finely chopped bark, or coir, all intended to increase the tilth and structure of the potting mix. Additives may include: Soil Moist polymer gels that absorb and release water and nutrients, Osmocote polycarbonate prills filled with a small amount of watersoluble fertilizer, Roots mycorrhizal fungi that produce root-filaments that increase absorption of water and nutrients.
Planting your container garden. • Acclimate plants coming out of the greenhouse prior to planting so they are conditioned to better handle high and low temperatures, windy conditions, and a change in light conditions. One week is optimal, but even a few days/nights out will make a difference. Continue to water the plants and reduce fertilizer which promotes tender, new growth. • We use a pot in place method on all container gardens that leave the greenhouse: Remove the plants from their pots and set the plants aside. Put enough mix in the bottom of your container so that the tops of the empty pots, that will soon be set inside the container, are just below, not level with, the top of the container. Add more mix and firmly fill in around the empty pots (now is a good time to topdress with slow-release fertilizer). One pot at a time, gently rock the pot back and forth then lift it out. Now place the root ball, intact, into the space created by lifting out the empty pot. Gently press in on the corners and “water in”.
Maintaining a container garden. • Always be prepared to cover newly planted container gardens should the weather take an unexpected turn for the worst. A light bed sheet works best for a light frost. Such measures can also be taken if deer tend to move in on your gardens through the night. • By keeping the potting mix evenly moist from top to bottom, you’ll have the best assurance that your plants will not wilt due to lack of water or rot due to too much. Plants need fertilizer. Whether provided as a slowrelease fertilizer topdressing, via water-soluble fertilizer applied with every third watering, or as compost tea, all plants benefit from replacing nutrients on a regular schedule through the growing season.

How do you sleep? Curled up in a ball? On your back? On your stomach? The position in which you sleep is sometimes a major factor in how well you sleep.
We all sleep better on our side or our back. Take snoring for example. Usually, snoring occurs when you sleep on your back. It happens because the soft palate, uvula, tongue, tonsils and/or muscles in the back of your throat rub against each other and vibrate. So, when your spouse yells at you to roll over, this is good advice because you usually don’t snore when you are lying on your side! Raising the head of your bed four inches, by placing a wedge under your mattress, can help too. Recent studies indicate that sleep position may also affect blood pressure. Researchers found that a shift in sleep position from back to stomach actually lowered systolic blood pressure. This may be helpful for a handful of people with cardiovascular issues, however, sleeping on your back or side is much better for your spine, especially your neck. Every new mother is cautioned about her newborn’s sleeping position, with good reason. Babies who fall asleep on their stomachs seem to be at greater risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The American Academy of Pediatrics affirmed this in a statement released in 1992, recommending that all healthy infants be placed on their backs to sleep. MAY 2013 | everythingelko.com

While the news media focused on the “fiscal cliff”, there was little mention of the tax reform that this act created. The Good News? Federal tax credits related to home improvements would be immediately instituted –not just for 2013 but retroactively for 2012. Home improvements that provide energy savings are alive and well and were available for you to claim on your upcoming 2012 tax return. ( If you’ve already filed you may ask your accountant about filing an amended return.) If you didn't make any energyefficient improvements to your home in 2012—such as buying Energy Star appliances or maybe installing new insulation—you have through the end of 2013 to do so and then claim on your 2013 tax return.

Window Coverings: The surprising thing about these federal tax credits is that certain products that you might not automatically associate with energy savings qualify for an energy credit. For example, window covering manufacturer Hunter Douglas offers a specific kind of blind that the federal government recognizes as "insulation." According to Hunter Douglas this is likely because "Opaque Duette Architella shades can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 40 percent in winter and reduce solar heat gain through windows by up to 80 percent in summer." So where does that leave you? Well, you could conceivably buy and install these Duette Architella honeycomb shades, and, come tax time, include the receipt from your purchase—plus the Manufacturer's Certification Statement—in order to file for the tax credit for energy savings on your return. London Broil with Cherry-Balsamic Sauce INGREDIENTS: 1/3 C. dry red wine 1/4 C. balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp. cherry preserves 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. salt Freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 1/2 lbs. London broil, trimmed* 3 tbsp. finely chopped shallot 1 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil 2 tsp. butter 1. Whisk wine, vinegar, cherry preserves, garlic, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Place meat in a shallow glass dish. Pour the marinade over the meat and turn to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator, turning several times, for at least 20 mins. or up to 8 hrs. 2. Remove the meat from the marinade. Pour the marinade into a small saucepan; add shallot and set aside. Brush a ridged grill pan* or heavy skillet with oil; heat over medium-high heat. Add the meat and cook for 10 to 12 mins. per side for medium-rare, depending on thickness, or until it reaches desired doneness. (It may appear that the meat is burning but don't worry, it will form a pleasant crust.) Transfer the meat to a cutting board; let rest for 5 mins. 3. While the meat is cooking, bring the marinade to a boil; cook over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes, or until it is reduced to about 1/2 cup. Remove from the heat; add butter and whisk until melted. 4. Slice the meat thinly against the grain. Add any juices on the cutting board to the sauce. Serve the meat with the sauce. TIPS Make Ahead Tip: Marinate the meat for up to 8 hours. Ingredient note: London broil is a thicker cut of steak that benefits from the tenderizing effects of a marinade. Tip: A ridged grill pan is great for indoor grilling, but you can use the broiler or, if weather permits, cook the steak on an outdoor grill. The chewy cherry brownie 1 1/2 C. Sugar 3/4 C. Butter 2 Eggs 1 tsp. Vanilla 1 1/2 C. Flour 1 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder 1/2 C. Chopped Maraschino Cherries Pour into a greased 8x8 baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let brownies cool to room temperature. Then frost!
oh so yummy frosting Heat in a saucepan over medium heat 1 C. Milk and 5 Tbsp. of flour. Whisk continuously until thick and set aside to cool. Once at room temperature add 1 tsp. of maraschino cherry juice to add flavor and color. In a mixer blend 1 C. butter with 1 C. granulated sugar. Once other mixture is cooled add to the butter/ sugar mixture and mix until whipped! For more color you could add food coloring. Frost brownies. Once the frosting has set, drizzle melted chocolate on top and garnish with a cherry! Enjoy!

Crafting: Pass or Fail Summer Bucket List
The month of May is the perfect time to get a head start on making a list of things that you want to get to in those three short months, June, July, and August. It seems like every time summer is over and the kids are heading back to school I am saying the same old thing "we didn't do enough this summer"! Well I have no more excuses because Pinterest came to my rescue and they call this a "Summer Bucket List".
DIY
Find any size bucket, add some scrapbook paper and modge podge to decorate it. Hand each family member a specific color of pre-cut paper and have them write their activities on them. Clip onto bucket with clothes pins. As you finish an activity on your list, simply toss the paper inside the bucket. I give this craft an A.
Mother's Day Vase Next is a Mother's Day craft. I'm practically cheating on this one because all you do is find a Free Printables for Mother's Day site and attach to candies, flowers, soda bottles and such. Washi tape is all the rage these days, (it is a patterned tape) but unfortunately I could not locate any, so I improvised and used ribbon to dress up a plain vase. Easy A+
Tye Dying
Everyone knows what a mess tye dying t-shirts can be. It is also a lengthily process. We can thank Pinterest again for helping us skip some of those steps. So how about Tye Dying with Sharpies? Take a plain white tee and lay it over a cup and wrap with a rubber band. Make a few marks from the center of the circle outward and repeat in different colors. Take a dropper full of rubbing alcohol and drop into the center of the circle and work you way out. Remove and repeat. Let alcohol dry and then press with an Iron, last step is to wash. Also, we got a little bonus because we had used a couple of white rubber bands and THEY are now tye dyed as well!!!! Two crafts in one, therefore another A+. Contributed by Shippy Chic
