Gift of Emptiness A CLEAN NEVADA WIND
Gift of Emptiness is a collection 17 of works by artist Ginger Ware of Reno. The art for this special exhibit is based on Nevada landscapes. It premiered on October 6 in the Barrick Gallery at the Northeastern Nevada Museum in Elko and is scheduled to run through December 8. Ware creates oil paintings, monotypes, and drawings with ink, charcoal, and other media. Most recently she has been interested in oil, which she sees as “supremely versatile, tough, vibrant, and rich.” In Gift of Emptiness, Ware began her paintings from real places that she has visited. “Often we avoid emptiness— it smacks of poor planning, running out of something essential, or the unexpected loss of something we wanted to keep.” She has asked herself: “What would happen if I could
accept being at a loss, at my wit’s end, relieved of my (failed) strategic plans to come out on top? Something new could be blown in on a clean Nevada wind.” Ware holds a BA in English/Creative Writing from Wichita State University (Wichita, Kansas), a MFA in Fiction Writing from Columbia University (New York City, New York), and a BFA in Studio from School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois). In Nevada, her previous shows include Home Means Nevada, Artown Festival (Reno), Midtown Art Walk (Reno); Open Studios (Reno); Home and Away, Sparks Public Library (Sparks); Tahoe Chamber Music Society (Incline Village); and Arts Festival (Incline Village).

Turkey & Stuffing Turnovers (recipe & photo courtesy of afamilyfeast.com) INGREDIENTS 4 oz cold leftover cooked turkey, chopped 4 oz cold leftover stuffing, broken up 4 oz cold leftover turkey gravy 4 oz leftover cranberry sauce 1 17.2-oz box (2 ready-to-bake) Puff Pastry Sheets 1 egg DIRECTIONS Thaw puff pastry sheets per box instructions for 40 min. Preheat oven to 415 degrees. While pastry sheets are thawing, in a small bowl, mix turkey, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce. Mix just to incorporate the ingredients. Once dough is thawed, take each sheet and cut into four squares, for a total of eight squares. Divide filling between the eight
squares keeping the filling in a triangle to one side. One at a time, wet two sides around filling with a tiny dab of water with your finger. Lift the opposite unfilled corner and bring it to the filled corner to make a triangle over filling and pinch two corners together. Lift it up and cup it in your hand and gently pinch all sides closed. If the filling starts to squeeze out, push it back with a spoon or your finger. Repeat for all eight making sure they are tightly sealed and place on parchment lined sheet pan with tips slightly turned to each other making a “U” shape. Mix egg with a teaspoon of water and with a pastry brush; brush the tops of each turnover. Place pans in the oven and bake until browned and puffed, somewhere between 15-25 minutes depending on your oven – rotating the pans halfway through the baking to ensure even cooking.
Turkey, Cranberry, Brie Egg Rolls (recipe & photo courtesy of reciperunner.com) INGREDIENTS 8-10 egg roll wrappers 1 cup shredded turkey 1/8 teaspoon poultry seasoning (optional) Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup cranberry sauce 8-10 slices of brie cheese Cranberry Mustard Dipping Sauce: 1/2 cup cranberry sauce 1 tablespoon dijon mustard 1 tablespoon honey Salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS In a small bowl sprinkle the salt, pepper and poultry seasoning over the shredded turkey and stir together until it's evenly coated in the spices. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Fill each egg roll wrapper with approximately 1 tsp of the shredded turkey, 1-2 tsp of cranberry sauce and a slice of the brie. Brush water all around the edges of the egg roll wrapper, then tuck in the sides, and roll it up tightly like a burrito. Seal the end of the egg roll with a little more water then place it seam side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spray or brush the tops of the egg rolls with cooking spray or oil then place them on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until they start to turn golden brown. Cool the egg rolls on the baking sheet for a few minutes before serving with the cranberry mustard sauce. Cranberry Mustard Sauce: Add all of the ingredients for the dipping sauce to a blender and blend until smooth.

OWNY
AND THE D Y IR A H E H T
Woodpeckers are a member the family Picidae which have evolved to deal with chiseling wood, including "shock-absorber" head musculature, extremely long sticky tongues, and stiff tail feathers helping them perch upright on trees. Woodpeckers are an important part of the ecosystem. They help to control insect populations and they make nest cavities that are used by other species of birds and mammals who cannot excavate them on their own. Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers are commonly found in both Elko and Spring Creek. During the winter many people put out suet feeders which will attract both of these woodpeckers. They also like to feed on sunflower seeds. Since both have a similar black and white pattern they can be difficult to tell apart. Here are some ways to tell them apart:
SIZE:
Downy Woodpeckers are small, only about 6-7 inches in length (not much bigger than a house sparrow). Hairy Woodpeckers are similar in size to a robin (about 9-11 inches in length). Judging a bird’s size can be difficult but comparing the bird to nearby objects such as the size of a feeder or a branch can be helpful. There is no major difference in the size of the male and the female in either of these birds. So if you see two together that are obviously different sizes, then you have one of each species!
BILL SHAPE:
The Hairy Woodpecker’s bill is long and chisel-like. It is almost the same length as its head. The Downy’s bill is short and dainty. It is approximately 1/3 the length of the bird’s head.
COLOR PATTERN:
The Hairy typically has all white outer tail feathers but the Downy have spotted black and white tail feathers. The Downy has a hard to see black fleck extending onto the white of its shoulder but the Hairy has a more distinct comma shaped black mark extending from the shoulder up to the breast. In both species the males will have a red patch on the back of the head. On Hairy Woodpeckers this red patch is often split. Downy Woodpeckers have a larger white patch on the sides of the neck, most obvious when viewing the back of the bird.
36
NOVEMBER 2016
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
VOICE:
Both species have short, sharp calls. Birding by ear can be a challenge but can aid in tricky identifications. Many sites on the internet will provide recordings of their calls so that you can compare. The Downy’s ‘pik’ call is softer and descends in pitch at the end, while Hairy Woodpeckers have a louder, stronger ‘peek’ sound that stays on one pitch. Hairy woodpeckers also have a rattling or whinnying call.
BEHAVIOR:
Hairy woodpeckers are relatively skittish, shy birds that are less confident in open areas than the downy. Despite their smaller size the Downy is more curious and bolder.

West CO NTRIBUT ED BY ADRIAN BOWLES, RENO NEV.
This college football season definitely has had its twist and turns with only 11 teams remaining undefeated. In years prior the AP top 25 poll has consisted of mostly undefeated teams almost ensuring a oneloss team wouldn’t be able to make it to a BCS bowl game or now the College Football Playoffs. Now with only No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 11 Baylor, No. 15 Boise State, No. 20 West Virginia, and No. 24 Western Michigan remaining undefeated, this finally
gives the opportunity to many teams to rise above all and bask in the glory of their fallen foes. No. 5 Washington and No. 15 Boise State have quickly moved into first place in each of their conferences. Both teams still remain undefeated and have been making their opponents know who the top dogs are. Boise State is used to being No. 1 in the Mountain West, whereas Washington is finally getting the attention they deserve with Oregon, USC, and Arizona State not playing up to par.

Even though Boise State is in a non-power conference, they have had large success in the past in big games. The Broncos are 3-0 in Fiesta Bowl appearances and have a 68.75 win percentage in their bowl games. In the past two seasons Boise has defeated Arizona 38-30 in the Fiesta Bowl in 2014 and has defeated Northern Illinois 55-7 in the Poinsettia Bowl. The Big-12 was making a move to expand their conference with Boise State in the running to finally join a power-conference, but unfortunately for the Broncos that plan fell through quickly. It might’ve held them back in the long run, but the Broncos are putting together another great season to help bolster their resume.
their season facing the Louisiana- Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns where they won 45-10. None of those teams are in a power-conference so it doesn’t make that big of a statement when it comes to entering the AP Top 25. Thankfully for the Broncos, the Pac-12 always wants to put up a fight against Mountain West teams in hopes of an easy win. Washington State and Oregon State both fell to the Boise in September not only making Boise shine in the Mountain West but also giving them even more authority in playing teams in the powerconferences.
Boise State is 2-0 in conference play defeating Utah State 21-10 and beating New Mexico 49-10. The Broncos started off

Boise State is now No. 15 in the nation but only has conference games left on their schedule apart from their game against BYU on October 20th. Due to so few undefeated teams left Boise should be able to maintain in the AP Top 15 as long as they remain undefeated. BYU always tends to give the Broncos some trouble; but this year the Cougars are 3-3 and Boise will have home field advantage on the blue turf. Following the BYU game, arguably the Broncos’ hardest games of the year will all be away games starting off against Wyoming on October 29th, who is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Then on November 12th they will to travel to Hawaii who is currently in first place of the West Division in the Mountain West Conference. Hawaii is only 3-3 overall this season but is 2-0 in conference play. Then Boise State will be wrapping up their season playing at Air Force on November 25th. Air Force has a 4-1 overall record with a 1-1 record in
conference play. Air Force and BYU have held the Broncos back from a few undefeated years in the past, but hopefully the returning captains will be able to lead the way to their first undefeated season since 2009. Quarterback Brett Rypien and running back Jeremy McNichols have had tremendous seasons thus far leading the Broncos to 5-0. McNichols won the Mountain West offensive player of the week three times already this season for his performances against New Mexico, Utah State, and Oregon State. McNichols best game so far this season was against Oregon State on September 24th where he had 208 yards rushing on 28 attempts with three touchdowns and also had four receptions for 20 yards with another touchdown. McNichols has 9 total touchdowns, which is tied for the most with in the Mountain West Conference. In the past two seasons McNichols has the most rushing touchdowns in all of college football at 29. Brett Rypien, statistically, is the best quarterback in the Mountain West. Through five games Rypien has 1,415 passing yards with a 61.5% completion rate

and averages 9.1 yards per passing attempt. Rypien also has 11 touchdowns this season, which is the most by any quarterback in the conference. Rypien’s best game this season came on October 7th where his stats began to replicate that of a player on a video game. Rypien completed 21 of his 28 passes (75%) with 391 yards and 5 touchdowns. Rypien received offensive player of the week in the Mountain West following that performance. But will these two be able to lead their team to an undefeated season with hopes of a College Football Playoff spot or the chance to be in a BCS bowl game? Boise is predicted to play in the Cotton Bowl if they do go undefeated. Boise isn’t the only team who fears one loss could change their whole season. Boise’s former coach Chris Peterson, who made the Boise State brand what it is today, is having amazing success at Washington in a similar scenario of the 2006 season he had at Boise. In 2006 Coach Peterson led Boise State to their first undefeated season with a victory in their first BCS bowl game appearance defeating Oklahoma 43-42 in the Fiesta Bowl with the famous statue of liberty play to end the game in overtime. This season Peterson’s Huskies have had the largest margin of victory in all of college football. Washington beat Rutgers 48-13, Idaho 59-14, Portland State 413, Arizona 35-28, Stanford 44-6, and Oregon 7021 making the Huskies 6-0 on the season. Besides Washington, Washington State remains the only other team that is undefeated in conference play but still remains 3-2 on the season. Stanford was supposed to be the biggest challenge of the year for the Huskies but Stanford didn’t put up much of a fight. Being in a power-conference, Coach Peterson is almost guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff if the Huskies do remain undefeated. Washington still has to play No. 21 Utah on October 29th who are 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Then Washington is set to face off against Arizona State and Washington State to finish their season. Arizona State is 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Regardless if the Huskies finish the season undefeated they will still have to play in the Pac-12 championship game with the caliber of competition greatly above that in the Mountain West conference. But with starting quarterback Jake Browning in the Heisman watch, Peterson’s odds are looking good.
///
Jake Browning is currently third in the Heisman watch only generating more excitement as the season goes on. Coach Peterson is known for molding former Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore into the winning-est college quarterback of all time and is beginning to start a similar trend with Browning. Browning leads the Pac-12 in touchdowns with 23 in just his first six games this season with 1,418 yards. Browning has a pass completion rate of 72.2 % compared to his 63.3% completion rate last season. Last season Browning also threw 10 interceptions on the season compared to his two this year and he only had 16 touchdowns last season. He also has been named the Pac-12 offensive player of the week twice this season for his performances against Oregon and Stanford. Browning has definitely grown as a player in just one year. Not only is Peterson helping Browning improve on his personal game but the team as a whole looks like a fine tuned machine. Last year Washington finished 6-6 on the season and 4-5 in conference play. This including loses to Boise State, California, Oregon, Utah, Stanford, and Arizona State, which the Huskies still have to play California, Utah, and Arizona State this season. Will Coach Peterson be able to lead the Huskies to their first undefeated team since 1991? Both teams are only one loss away from watching their hopes and dreams dwindle away from them. But in a time where one loss is all you need to lose it all, it’s time to rise above the rest and bask in the glory of the fallen foes. Will the original BCS busters in Boise State be able to challenge yet another power-conference team in the Cotton Bowl to show that they can play in a more competitive conference? Will Coach Peterson finally be able to get his shot at the National Championship now that his is coaching in the Pac-12? The last two remaining undefeated teams in the west have a long road ahead of them before they get their shot to mark their own names into college football history.

1. Waimea Canyon, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” is a hiker’s paradise. This glorious gulch contains 3,000-foot tall cliffs with lush green foliage amidst red pops of color, sprinkled with waterfalls. Millions of years ago, volcanic activity as well as the Waimea River, helped carve out this mini canyon. Erosion and rainfall are among the factors that continue to chisel away at this mountainous beauty. But hey, maybe hiking isn’t for you. If that’s the case, there are many companies that offer helicopter tours and they are not to be missed. A highlight of any Kauai vacation is a helicopter tour of the Waimea Canyon. 2. The Na Pali Coast-The Nā Pali Coast State Park is a 6,175 acres’ Hawaiian state park located in the center of the rugged 16 miles along the northwest side of Kauai, the oldest inhabited Hawaiian

island. The na pali along the shoreline rise as much as 4,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean and is best seen by helicopter or by boat. There are also many hiking trails available here as well, including the most famous of them all, the Kalalau trail. The Kalalau Trail is an 11-mile trail that leads from Ke’e Beach to Kalalau Beach along the Na Pali Coast and it is well worth the effort, if you are up to it. This hike isn’t for the faint of heart. Make sure you do your research and your training before you head out. 3. Poipu Beach Park-Head to the South Shore of Kauai and you will see why the “Travel Channel” once named Poipu Beach America’s best beach. This is one of the most popular and safest beaches on the island, which makes it popular with locals and visitors alike. Plus, you have a good chance to see marine life here as well. The Humpback whales can be seen offshore between December-May. Hawaiian sea turtles swim these waters as well. But the beach is most famous for the endangered Monk Seal that lives here. Snorkeling is very good here as well, and you may even catch a glimpse of the Hawaiian state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaa(no, I’m not kidding. That’s its real name and it’s a real fish). With a wading pool for toddlers and young swimmers, it’s no wonder this beach is so popular. You can always contact your local travel agent for more information on this, or any other vacation destination that interests you. We are here to help you plan your perfect vacation.

THINK LOCAL FIRST THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!
Shop Local - Support local retailers and service providers by doing your holiday shopping with them. Remember that for every $100 you spend at a local business 2/3 stays here recirculating in our community supporting local jobs and reinvestment in our community. When $100 is spent with a non-local business only 1/3 stays here. Make a 10% Shift - Already a strong supporter of local businesses or ready to make a switch to locals? The smallest change in shopping behavior can make a huge difference. Make a goal of shifting at least 10% of your non-local purchases to a local business this holiday season. Eat Local Food - Just because the weather has cooled doesn’t mean there isn’t still a plethora of local food to enjoy for the holidays. A wide variety of fresh vegetables are still available along with meats, eggs, herbs, cheeses and milk, nuts, apple cider and locally produced wine, beer and liquor. Use Cash - Consider using cash when making holiday purchases at local businesses. Not only will using cash help ensure you’ll stick to your budget but can save local businesses thousands of dollars in processing fees. That means even more of your money will stay local. Give and Volunteer - Local non-profits contribute significantly to the quality of our community and can use all the help they can get during these challenging economic times. Consider a monetary gift or volunteer some time. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated and you’ll feel great for helping out. www.sustainableconnections.org

Lamoille Women's Club
Annual Fall Craft Festival November 12th & 13th
November 12th and 13th, the second weekend in November, the Elko Community will be treated to another great event by the Lamoille Women's Club. The Fall Craft Festival, organized by Martha Wallace and Elisabeth Moore is held at Spring Creek High School Gymnasium on Highway 227 (Lamoille Highway) which is less than 10 minutes from Elko proper. This fall/winter event is sponsored by the Lamoille Women’s Club, who volunteer their time and talents to improve the communities of Lamoille, Spring Creek and Elko. Proceeds for all their projects and events are reinvested in the community that includes scholarships for high school seniors and college students, Harbor House residents, Volunteer Fire Departments, 911 Fund, Hospice, The Elko County Fair, CADV, Lamoille Post Office and Church, and the Veterans. This year the Event Coordinators are excited to have a Gingerbread House Showcase at their Fall Craft Festival. The following Businesses have graciously agreed to make gingerbread houses to promote the Festival: The Red Lion Catering Dept, the Gold Dust, Tomatoes, the Hilton Garden Inn, the Senior Citizens Center (2), Donuts ‘N Mor, and Blue Iris Cakes. All these organizations are community minded and giving. The Vendors judge the Gingerbread Houses. Several of the Gingerbread Houses will be available for “silent auction”. This gives an opportunity to individuals and families to bid on a great gingerbread house of their choice to display in their home or business. The Fall Craft Festival opens the season of holiday bazaars and craft events for Christmas shoppers in the Spring Creek/Elko area. Take
time from your weekend and enjoy shopping in comfortable setting among the various booths available to find that special gift for that someone special. Well-made creative items for shoppers’ satisfaction will be available at this extravaganza. Local photography, stoneware, quilts, ceramics, Christmas Ornaments, homemade soaps, and soap dishes, handmade jewelry, and refurbished furniture. For the foodies there will be gourmet olives, garlic and many other spices packaged for gift giving, cakes, pies, and chocolate delights. Not to mention Scentsy candles, other Christmas items, Miche Bags, totes, cat trees, boutique clothing, and bamboo pillows and sheets. Shop and browse in a spacious room with entertainment, great crafters, friends, and members of the Lamoille Women’s Club. And, be sure to stop and purchase tickets for hourly drawings, upon entering the gymnasium. Soup and sandwiches will be available at the Festival, provided by Ruby Mountain Pizza. Before leaving, check your door ticket numbers and then view the fabulous gingerbread houses displayed on the stage. A big advantage to the Fall Craft Festival is the FREE close in parking. The LWC ladies will also be unveiling their new quilt, Berries and Blossoms. The 42nd edition of the Quilt will be awarded to the lucky person that purchases an opportunity ticket between now and the Lamoille Country Fair. This year’s quilt has been made by Joyce Kay, and quilted by Terry Bowers, of Ruby Valley. The ladies will be pleased to offer everyone the opportunity to purchase tickets for this gorgeous quilt. Get your tickets early. One does not need to be present to win the quilt.
For more information on the Fall Craft Festival and the Gingerbread House Showcase, Contact Martha Wallace at 775-340-6922, Elisabeth Moore at 775-934-7194 or visit the GFWC Lamoille Women’s Club website at http://www.lamoillewomansclub.org. We look forward to seeing you at the Fall Craft Festival, Spring Creek High School.

15 Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain Is it possible to celebrate the season without packing on pounds? You bet! We found 15 simple strategies for preventing holiday weight gain. Written by Alyssa Shaffer | Health.com

Beware the festive 15! Even if you have superhuman willpower, the holiday season is challenging for everyone. Staying on track can seem so daunting, you feel like swan-diving into the eggnog and sending your sensible routine into hibernation until the New Year. But, as we all know, excess pounds don't disappear along with the decorations. And nobody wants to start the new year in the hole, body-wise.
1. Weigh yourself twice a week That's often enough to make sure you stay on track, but not so often that you take all the fun out of holiday noshing, says Michael Dansinger, MD, an assistant professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. Step on the scale first thing in the morning when your stomach is empty.
2. Start your day with a bang Exercising in the morning can help ensure better behavior all day long, according to a study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. Using brain scans, researchers found that when women worked out in the a.m., they not only moved more the rest of the day, but they also responded less to pictures of tempting food compared with the days they didn't do a morning workout. The upshot: fewer cravings for highfat fare.
3. Be picky, picky, picky
8. Avoid morning-after food
Peruse the buffet before you load your plate to avoid foods you don't really want, suggests obesity expert Tim Church, MD, a professor at Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University. If, for instance, you could take or leave sushi but adore sliders, don't start with the tuna rolls hoping to be able to resist the two-bite burger. "If you pick the stuff you really want and have it in moderation," Dr. Church notes, "you'll stave off those cravings that can get you in trouble later on."
Have the night of your life, then send guests home with food-filled Tupperware. "It's the leftovers that do you in," says Lauren Slayton, RD, founder of Foodtrainers in New York City. Repeat after us: Out of sight, out of mind...
4. Just say no everywhere Willpower is like a muscle: Work it and you get stronger. What's key is to practice keeping yourself in check in non-food situations, too. "Whether you're driving in rush hour traffic or dealing with a temperamental kid, there are challenges that require self-control," Dr. Dansinger says. Succeed in not honking at that rude driver, he explains, and you'll be better able to resist dessert at the party.
9. Drum up some willpower Under the spell of that peppermint bark you coworker brought to the office? Before you succumb, try this simple trick: Place the thumb and fingers of one hand on your forehand, a half inch apart. Tap each finger one at a time, once per second, telling yourself, "Hold on." Wait 15-20 minutes (return phone calls, check email), and the craving will disappear, according to Tufts University Research. Sounds crazy, but it works.
5. Avoid banking calories Cutting back all day so you can indulge at an event that night only sets you up for a pig-out. Why? You're freaking starving! "It's easy to get out of control when you're faced with high-calorie choices," says Tanya Zuckerbrot, RD, author of The Miracle Carb Diet. Be sure to eat your three squares and a couple of snacks. Aim for lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean protein.
6. Concentrate your workouts So what if you can't get to your favorite yoga class or find time for the treadmill? "Even just 15 minutes can help you maintain your fitness level," Dr. Church says. For example, jumping rope for 15 minutes torches about 190 calories; a quick yoga sequence at home can help you stay flexible.
7. Don't swear off desserts But practice the three-bite rule to keep your sweet tooth in check. "You'll get that amazing first taste, a satisfying middle one, and then a lingering third bite," Zuckerbrot says.

10. Cut back on diet soda In fact, any bubbly beverage can lead to belly bloat, explains Zuckerbrot. "The carbon dioxide trapped in the bubbles of fizzy drinks causes a buildup of air, which can lead to gas.
11. Eat your H20 Instead of trying to down eight glasses of water (near impossible when you're busy), have a green salad with a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette and a few slices of avocado. "These water-rich foods help keep you hydrated, so that everything moves through your system faster," Zied says.
12. Brew up a pot of peppermint tea Research shows peppermint can help calm stomach muscles and reduce gas. Not a fan? Try chamomile, suggests Bonnie Taub-Dix, RD, author of Read It Before You Eat It.
13. Chew slowly We know: When your to-do list is never-ending, it's hard to make yourself downshift, even at mealtime.
But eating fast is a quick recipe for an expanded waistline. Here's why: "The more air you swallow, the more bloated you'll get," Taub-Dix notes.
14. Get plenty of potassium The nutrient counterbalances sodium, so you retain less water, Zuckerbrot explains. Our favorite potassium possibilities: bananas, papayas, kiwis, strawberries, and cantaloupe. Or serve up some asparagus or dandelion greens to get the bonus of a natural diuretic.
15. Keep calm and kick cravings Stressed by the sight of that holiday spread? Take deep breaths before you grab a plate. Research suggests that women who practice stress reduction techniques are able to prevent weight gain. Close your eyes and focus on your reaching for 30 seconds. Then reevaluate whether you really want to fill your plate; chances are you don't.

Eat to Beat
Inflammation Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic
Salads often incorporate several inflammation-fighting foods. What we put into our body doesn’t just reflect how we look on the outside, but how we feel on the inside. And for many patients who come to us seeking relief care initially, they don’t fully understand how poor nutrition can lead to body aches and inflammation.
So, what exactly does it mean to suffer from internal inflammation? When a substance that your body doesn’t want is introduced, your immune system begins to attack it, causing inflammation that can manifest itself in a number of ways including swollen and painful joints, decreased range of motion, stress and anxiety and fatigue among others. If we’re constantly putting food into our bodies that it doesn’t want, inflammation can become a gateway to chronic disease. But before we get to foods that can help your body stay healthy and away from inflammation, let’s take a look at foods that are known to promote it. Typically, these are foods we wouldn’t consider “healthy” like:

•
SODA
•
RED MEAT
•
SHORTENING, LARD OR MARGARINE
•

When you hear the word “cancer” a million questions run through your mind. “How am I going to pay for this?” shouldn’t be one of them. At Northeastern Nevada Radiation Oncology Center, we believe that patients should focus their energy on healing. That’s why we do everything we can to take the financial burden off of patients. We accept Medicare, Medicaid, VA Plans, and most commercial insurance plans. In fact, our patients only pay the in-network price, even if we are not participating in their insurance network. We never use collection agencies and we never turn away a patient for inability to pay. We’re committed to helping patients navigate the financial aspects of care – because money should never be a barrier to receiving exceptional cancer treatment.

PREPARING FOR WINTER
- STAY COZY AND CALM WHILE PREPARING FOR THE COLD CO NTRIB U TED B Y JULIE A. KRAUS, WEST ERN STAT ES P ROPANE
Since colder weather is just around the corner, it is important to prepare your home for the upcoming season. Winter can be a magical time of year if you prepare in advance. If you use propane, it is very important to make sure the path to your propane tank is free and clear of debris. Once the ground is covered with snow, it will be difficult to see what lies beneath; which could cause hazards for you and your propane provider’s employees and equipment.
Next, start off by checking your heating system and venting. If you use a propane or wood fireplace, be sure to have the chimney inspected and cleaned by a professional before the first frost. Check chimney draft to make sure the chimney will draw up the fire and smoke properly. Smoke should rise up the chimney and if it doesn't, you have an obstruction and need to call a professional to clean the chimney of creosote, ash and other possible debris. If it has been several years (or never!) since you had your fireplace chimney cleaned, you should have it done by a professional chimney sweep. Inspect the fire brick in the fireplace and if you see any open mortar joints have them repaired immediately! A fire can spread into the stud wall behind the masonry fire brick through open mortar joints. It is also important to have a professional perform a routine check of the heating system before cold weather arrives. This should include vacuuming the vents and other heating components. If your furnace has a filter, check to see if it needs replacing. It is recommended to replace furnace filters regularly, so keep extras handy. It is also very
important to remove all flammable material from the area surrounding your furnace. Check to see if your ceiling fan has a reverse switch, if so, blades should turn in a clockwise direction to push down heated air from the ceiling. This is especially helpful in rooms with high ceilings. It might even allow you to turn down your thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings. Keep drafts to a minimum this winter. If you have them, install storm windows and doors and don't overlook the basement. Add or replace worn weather stripping around the doors and windows and caulk any gaps. If doorstops are worn, replace them. If any pipes or ducts travel through an exterior wall, be sure to use caulking and weather-stripping around all entry points. These steps will block any potential entry points for cold air. If you haven’t already done so, install a smoke detector in each bedroom, hallways near bedrooms, at the top of stair wells and near kitchens. Buy extra smoke detector batteries and change them when daylight savings ends. If you do not have one, install carbon monoxide detectors near your furnace W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

and/or water heater. Buy a fire extinguisher or replace an extinguisher older than 10 years. If you are unsure if your fire extinguisher is good and up -to-date, contact a fire extinguisher professional and have your extinguisher inspected. In cases of extreme cold weather and snowfall, be prepared by having a battery back-up to protect your computer and sensitive electronic equipment. Store extra bottled water and non-perishable food supplies (including pet food, if you have a pet), blankets and a first-aid kit in a dry and easy-to-access location. Last but not least, you may want to prepare a comprehensive emergency kit for your home in case of emergency. Often neglected, the cooling system condensing unit outside of the home requires winterization. Use a hose to clean the fan blades and condensing coils of debris and dirt. Cover the condensing unit with a breathable waterproof cover. Left unprotected, the condensing unit can be damaged by wet leaves and debris that contribute to rusting and freezing of internal components. Drain the water from your outdoor faucets and garden hoses and arrange to have any in-ground sprinkler pipes blown out. Roll up the garden hoses and store them inside. Identify any "problem" pipes that are prone to freezing in the house and consider using heat tape to keep them warm during extremely cold weather. If the worst happens, ensure everyone in the family knows how to turn off the water at the source which will minimize leaking if a pipe bursts. To prepare yard equipment, drain gas from lawn mowers and oil any power tools. Make sure your snow removal equipment is in proper working order and replace worn rakes and snow shovels. If you follow these suggestions and act now it will help ensure that you and your family have a safe and stress free winter season.

If you haven’t already heard, natural pharmaceutical counterparts are blowing prescription drugs out of the water! Did you know that over 50% of the drugs in clinical use today contain natural products (and their derivatives and analogs)? These natural products are synthesized from plant compounds and bring up the question of why individuals suffering from illnesses are simply not provided with a prescription to eat these foods instead of given a chemical concoction of chemical pills with a component of said plant compounds.
Over 4 billion prescriptions in the United States and Canada make up more than 80% of the world’s prescription opioids. Even worse, between 1997 and 2012 these prescription opioids have increased in dosage by almost 500%! Drug overdose death rates in the US have more than tripled since 1990. In 2008, drug overdoses were the leading cause of death of more than 36,000 people, most of these caused by prescription drugs. Nearly 15,000 people die every year of overdoses involving prescription painkillers – but doctors continue to prescribe, leaving this problem largely unfixed. It is hard for some individuals to believe that plants have the power to heal and cure. Usually it is the case that people want a quick fix so that they do not have to give up their poor lifestyle and dietary habits. It is up to us to take responsibility for our own bodies and heal underlying health problems properly instead of bandaging them up with bandaids that keep falling off (and with wounds that fail to heal). Most of the drugs prescribed today are those for pain, high blood pressure, cholesterol reduction, antacids, antipsychotics, hypothyroidism, diabetes and antibiotics. If you knew that you could simply increase the consumption of the proper foods (with no side effects) in your diet to help heal your body naturally – would you? Make the commitment and get off prescription drugs for good! Ask your doctor or take responsibility for your own health and wellness and start to eat proper, while phasing out prescription medications that are quite possibly doing your body no good.

The Thankful Pumpkin Craft
I am always looking at my Pinterest Boards for some easy crafts. The other day I came across a VERY EASY pumpkin craft. I absolutely LOVE this craft because it is all about being thankful! I think we all have a LOT to be thankful for, and this is a GREAT way to give kids the opportunities to count their blessings :) MATERIALS NEEDED:

1. Cut out 8 pieces of orange contraction paper into 1" strips. You will also need to cut out 2 leaves and 2 skinny strips of green contraction paper for the vines. 2. Have kids write something they are thankful for on each strip of orange construction paper. Be sure to leave about a 1" space on the sides of the strip so the writing isn't covered up when stapled together. 3. Use a stapler or brads to attach the orange strips at the top and then at the bottom to form a pumpkin. 4. Add your leaves and green vines. I rolled up the green construction in a paper to help curl the vines.

Mason Jar
Fall Luminaries Craft
Festive and colorful right?! We love them with and without the candles in them. MATERIALS: •
Mason Jars (ours are from the Dollar store)
•
Mod Podge
•
Fall colored Tissue Paper ripped into pieces
•
Brown Construction paper
•
Paint Brush
•
Candle
These are so simple to create and the kids will enjoy doing it! 1. We started by painting one area at a time with Mod Podge. 2. When adding your tissue paper, I recommend having a wet paper towel or wipe handy because little hands can easily get the glue on them and it makes it had to attach the tissue paper with sticky hands. 3. We used scraps of brown construction paper to make our trees and attached them the same way as the tissue paper. The final step was to go over all the loose ends of tissue paper that were sticking up and put a top coat of Mod Podge over it all.

The Holiday Season Is Here,
Is Your Pet Overindulging?
’Tis the season for family gatherings, gift giving and food galore. Veterinarians know this is also the season for canine pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), a painful, potentially life-threatening condition most commonly caused by overindulgence in foods that are particularly rich or fatty. And what kitchen isn’t overflowing with such foods this time of year? What Is the Pancreas? The pancreas is a thin, boomerang-shaped, delicate-appearing organ that resides in the abdominal cavity, tucked up against the stomach and small intestine. Though the pancreas may be diminutive in appearance, its actions are mighty! It is the body’s source of insulin (necessary for controlling blood sugar levels) as well as digestive enzymes, which are necessary for proper absorption of nutrients. When pancreatitis is chronic or particularly severe, this little factory sometimes
permanently closes down, resulting in diabetes mellitus and/or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, requiring insulin injections and digestive enzyme replacement therapy, respectively. When a dog or cat eats, enzymes are released from the pancreas into the small intestine where they are activated for food digestion. Sometimes, for reasons we do not fully understand, these enzymes are activated within the pancreas itself, resulting in the inflammation and auto digestion of pancreas. Besides the eating rich or fatty foods, other known causes of pancreatitis include hormonal imbalances, inherited defects in fat metabolism and some medications. For some affected dogs, an underlying cause is never found. Symptoms associated with pancreatitis are variable but may include vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and decreased activity and appetite. How a Vet Diagnoses Pancreatitis Short of performing a pancreatic biopsy (a surgical procedure), diagnosing pancreatitis can be challenging, because noninvasive tests are fraught with false-negative and falseW W W. positive results. Veterinarians must rely on a combination of the following: • A history of dietary indiscretion, vomiting and lethargy. • Physical examination findings (particularly abdominal pain). • Characteristic complete blood cell count (CBC) and blood chemistry abnormalities. • A positive or elevated Spec cPL (canine pancreas-specific lipase) blood test. • Characteristic abnormalities found on an abdominal ultrasound. Treatment of Pancreatitis There is no cure for pancreatitis — much like a bruise, the inflammation must resolve on its own. Treatment consists of hospitalization for the administration of intravenous fluids, antibiotics to prevent secondary infection or abscess formation, and injectable medications to control vomiting, pain and stomach acid secretion. Affected dogs should ideally be monitored around the clock for the lifethreatening complications that sometimes accompany pancreatitis, such as kidney failure, heart rhythm abnormalities, respiratory distress and bleeding disorders. If your dog has pancreatitis, count on a minimum of two to three days of hospitalization. At-home treatment for pancreatitis typically involves feeding a low-fat or fat-free diet. This may be a life-long recommendation, particularly if your dog has been a repeat offender. Most dogs fully recover with appropriate therapy; however, some succumb to complications associated with pancreatitis.
Preventing Pancreatitis 1. When in doubt, check with your veterinarian before offering human food to your pet. This is especially true if your pet is on a special diet or has an existing medical condition. 2. If you feel you must give holiday foods, do so sparingly and only if well-tolerated by your dog’s gastrointestinal tract and waistline. Keep in mind that whether offered a teaspoon or a tablespoon of something delicious, most dogs will gulp it down in the same amount of time and reap the same psychological benefit. 3. Don’t offer tidbits from the table while you are eating. This is a setup for bad behavior. Offer the treat only after you’ve left the table. 4. Most importantly, if you shouldn’t be eating the food yourself (emphasis on shouldn’t), please don’t feed it to your dog! By all means, give your precious pup a bit of turkey breast but without the skin attached and unaccompanied by fat-laden sour cream mashed potatoes and gravy. Remember, most dogs are so darned excited about getting a treat, they don’t care what it is, only that they’re getting it! Some people dream of sugarplum fairies, a white Christmas and stress-free family gatherings. Here at Elko Veterinary Clinic we are dreaming of a holiday season in which not a single dog develops pancreatitis!
Wishing you and your four-legged family members a joyful and healthy holiday season. 88

It is a time for celebration! It is a time to remember, appreciate and announce the joy that adoption can bring to families. By creating forever families, adoption unites parents and children, links birth and adoptive relatives and builds friendships between fellow adoptive families. Help us celebrate adoption as a positive way to build families.
The Elko Community Improvement Council, led by District Judge Nancy Porter, invites all families, to join in the third annual Celebrating Families Through Adoption on Friday, November 18, 2016 from 4:30PM7:00PM at the Elko Indian Colony Gymnasium, (2250 Indian View Heights Dr). This event is sponsored by Premier Adoption Agency, Elko Band Council, Albertsons and CocaCola, and Good Blends. While we hope to bring awareness of adoption, we also hope to debunk the myths of adoption as well as draw attention to the many children in foster care who wait and hope for permanent families. Come and be a part of a funfilled evening of games, activities, food, refreshments and more! There are many faces to adoption. Adoptions can be open or closed, through private agencies, state foster care or even from other countries. Children of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are waiting for parents to make a
difference in their lives. To be a foster or adoptive parent, you do not have to be married, childless, under 40, or college educated. You do have to provide a loving and stable home. We believe there are families out there for every child. In the end, Adoption Month is about celebrating family – and the importance of every child to have the unconditional love and lifelong support that we hope family will bring. Adoption creates a different kind of family, and adding to your family through adoption or foster care can be the most rewarding gift you could ever give your family. With the staggering number of children in foster care in our community, the Elko Community Improvement Council would also like to take this opportunity to bring attention to the need for more foster families in Elko County. Many people consider foster parenting, but often, fear the unknowns of it. Foster parenting is a powerful way
to make a difference in the lives of children and help provide children and youth with a greater future. The children need you. Without local foster families, children are moved to other communities, taking them away from their connections - their family, their friends, their school, and their activities. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please call (775) 753-1300 for more information. For more information about domestic and international adoptions through Premier Adoption Agency please visit www.premieradoption.org or call (775) 376-5700.
