Many of us grew up on vegetables that were boiled to death, salted, then garnished with a pat of butter. Steaming vegetables became all the rage at one point, a nutritional improvement in cooking method, but again, some potentially bland results. It’s time to reinvent our relationship with vegetables! With some experimentation and new ideas, delicious results can be found that can quickly become new mealtime favorites.

Tomatoes, Zucchini, Cucumbers are fruits, and rhubarb is a vegetable! Huh? Botanically speaking, fruits are those foods containing a seed(s), while vegetables are leaves, roots, or stems. Cooks take a more traditional, cultural approach to the topic, and apply a sweetness expectation to the fruit moniker.

1. Preheat oven to 475º. On a parchment-lined baking sheet, rub poblanos with 2 teaspoons oil. Roast until slightly blackened and softened, 15 to 20 minutes, turning once. Remove from oven. When cool enough to handle, remove skins with paper towels. Use a pairing knife to make a small slit in each chile, then carefully remove seeds (and discard), keeping stem end intact. 2. In a blender, combine chipotle, garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, and 3/4 cup water; season with pepper. Blend until smooth. Add cilantro, and pulse once to combine. 3. In a small saucepan, bring 2/3 cup water to a boil. Add quinoa; return to a boil. Stir once, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook until quinoa is tender but still chewy and has absorbed all liquid, about 15 minutes. Fluff with a fork.
Dry the vegetables with a towel, or by air-drying on the countertop. For leafy greens, a salad spinner works magic in removing excess water.
4. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high. Add mushrooms and 1/2 teaspoon salt, season with pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are tender, about 5 minutes. Add corn and beans, and cook, stirring, until heated through, about 2 minutes. Stir in 1/2 cup cheese and the quinoa. 5. Spread chipotle mixture evenly in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Stuff peppers with filling, dividing evenly, and arrange in dish, dot with remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake until golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool in pan 10 minutes before serving. Per Serving: 324 calories, 3.2 g saturated fat; 4.6 g unsaturated fat; 12.6 mg

Use a melon baller or small spoon to scrape the flesh, seeds, and juice from 6 of the tomatoes into a bowl. Repeat with the remaining 2 tomatoes, scraping pulp into a separate bowl.

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Prepare an ice-water bath. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Blanch chard until tender and bright green, about 2 minutes. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, transfer chard to the ice bath, let cool, then transfer to paper towels and pat dry. Reserve leaves, being careful not to tear them. Cut off stem, making a V shape about 1" up from bottom of leaf. Chop stems into 1/4" pieces. 2. Meanwhile, place quinoa and 2-1/4 cups broth in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, and stir once. Reduce heat; simmer (uncovered) until quinoa is tender and has absorbed all liquid, about 15 minutes. Transfer quinoa to a large bowl, keep in a warm place. 3. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high; add butter and oil. When hot, add shallots and carrots; cook, stirring, until shallots are translucent, about 1 min. Add mushroom caps, chard stems, and 1/2 tsp salt; season with pepper. Sauté until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally, about 8 min.
2 bunches Swiss chard (about 2 lbs), preferably red 1 cup quinoa 5 cups chicken or vegetable broth. 1 T unsalted butter 2 T extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing 2 shallots, finely chopped 2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 1/8-inch 1 lb cremini mushrooms, stems removed 1 lb fresh shitake mushrooms, stems removed Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper 2 T fresh marjoram leaves 2 T Marsala
4. Remove 1-1/2 cups mushroom mixture from pan; add to quinoa. Reserve remaining mushroom mixture. Coarsely chop 1 T marjoram; stir into quinoa. 5. Divide chard leaves into six portions. Form one portion into a 6-by-10-inch rectangle, overlapping leaves so there are no gaps. Place 1/2 cup quinoa mixture at a short end, then roll up a chard, enclosing sides. Brush lightly with oil; place in an 8-inch baking dish. Repeat, making 5 more rolls. Bake until heated through, 5 to 10 minutes. 6. Heat remaining mushroom mixture over mediumhigh. Add Marsala; cook, stirring, until most of the liquid has been absorbed. Add remaining 2 -3/4 cups broth; cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, about 6 minutes. Stir in remaining 1 tablespoon marjoram (or 1/ 2 teaspoon dried). 7. To serve, slice each chard roll in half; place in the center of a plate. Spoon the mushroom mixture around chard. Per Serving: 258 calories, 2.4 g saturated fat; 6.4 g unsaturated fat; 5 mg

• ½ c. sugar
• 3 eggs
• 2½ c. flour
• ½ tsp. salt
• ¼ tsp. baking soda
• ¼ c. pecans
• 3 tbsp. butter
• 1¼ c. solid-packed pumpkin • 1/3 c. vegetable oil
• ½ tsp. vanilla extract
Preparation 1. Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly coat two 12-cup standard muffin tins with oil and set aside. 2. Mix the cream cheese, 1 egg, and 3 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl and set aside. Toss 5 tablespoons sugar, 1/2 cup flour, pecans, butter, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon together in a medium bowl and set aside. Combine the remaining sugar, flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and remaining cinnamon in a large bowl. 3. Lightly beat the remaining eggs, pumpkin, oil, and vanilla together in a medium bowl. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture, pour the pumpkin mixture into the well, and mix with a fork just until moistened. Evenly divide half of the batter among the muffin cups. Place two teaspoonfuls of cream cheese filling in the center of each cup and fill with the remaining batter.

Preparation 1. C ombine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground ginger, and cinnamon together in a large bowl. Remove 2 tablespoons of the flour mixture and toss with crystallized ginger in a small bowl. Set aside. 2. Whisk eggs, buttermilk, pumpkin, sugar, and vanilla in a medium bowl. Combine with flour mixture. Stir in butter and fold in reserved crystallized-ginger mixture. Do not overmix. 3. H eat a waffle iron and make waffles, using about 1/2 cup batter per each one. Keep warm in 200°F oven, if desired.
4. Sprinkle some of the pecan mixture over the top of each muffin and bake until golden and a tester, inserted into the muffin center, comes out clean -- 20 to 25 minutes. Cool on wire racks.

• 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour • 2 clove garlic
• 2 tsp. mustard seeds • 1½ tsp. Kosher salt • 1 tsp. cumin seeds
• ½ tsp. fresh-ground pepper • 1½ c. half-and-half
Preparation 1. Assemble the vegetables: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Butter a 1 1/2-quart casserole or baking dish and set aside. 2. Combine the bread crumbs, pumpkin seeds, butter, and half the thyme in a medium bowl, stir in the goat cheese, and set aside. Slice the pumpkin quarters into 1/8-inchthick pieces and repeat with the cauliflower quarters. 3. Combine flour, garlic, mustard seeds, salt, cumin seeds, pepper, and remaining thyme in a small bowl. Spread 1/3 of the pumpkin in the bottom of casserole and sprinkle with 2 teaspoons of the flour mixture. Repeat with 1/2 of the cauliflower and 2 teaspoons of flour. 4. Continue layering with the remaining pumpkin, cauliflower, and flour, finishing with pumpkin on top. Pour the half-and-half over the entire casserole, place on a baking sheet, and bake in the center of the oven for 30 minutes. 5. Sprinkle topping: After initial 30 minutes of baking, sprinkle bread-crumb mixture over casserole. Return it to oven and bake until golden and bubbly, about 30 more minutes. Serve hot.

Chipotle Sour Cream 1 container sour cream • 1 tsp. minced canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce • 2 tsp. fresh lime zest • 1 tbsp. fresh lime juice •
Preparation 1. Cook beef in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat 8 minutes or until beef crumbles and is no longer pink. Remove with a slotted spoon. Cook onion and next 2 ingredients in drippings for 7 minutes. Stir in chili powder and next 2 ingredients and cook 1 more minute. Stir in pumpkin and next 5 ingredients. 2. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low and simmer 20 to 25 minutes or until pumpkin is tender. Stir in cilantro and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with jalapeños and Chipotle Sour Cream. 3. Chipotle Sour Cream: Stir together sour cream, chipotle, lime zest, and lime juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Mountain Bluebird NEVADA’S STATE BIRD The Nevada State Legislature named the Mountain Bluebird as our state bird in 1967. (It is also the state bird of Idaho.) Unlike the Western Bluebird and the Eastern Bluebird our state bird has no orange coloration on its breast. The male has bright sky blue wings, back and tail with paler blue on its throat and breast. Underneath its tail and belly is white. The females are mostly a pale grey-brown with tinges of pale blue in its wings and tail. The legs, feet, bill and eyes are black. This is a small member of the thrush (robin) family usually about 6 to 7 inches in size. Mountain bluebirds will hover when foraging for food. They will also pounce from a perched position. Both male and female tend to hunch their shoulders and point their bill down when perched. Mountain Bluebirds eat mostly insects, especially during breeding season. caterpillars are their preferred food for nestlings. Spiders are also part of their diet. In winter, in addition to any insects still available they will eat small fruits and seeds such as juniper berries, elderberries, and currants. Mountain Bluebirds prefer the West’s wide-open spaces. They breed across western North America as far north as Alaska. They spend winters as far south as central Mexico. As long as there are trees that can provide nest cavities they will breed in habitats such as prairie, sagebrush stepped and even alpine tundra. Historically, the Mountain Bluebird depended for nest sites on forest tree cavities excavated by woodpeckers. This species will also use nest boxes. The female Mountain Bluebird picks its mate based on the location and quality of its nest site. It is important for the male to arrive on the breeding habitat early in order to take possession of prime cavities before competitors such as Tree Swallows can move in. Courting males sing near a nest cavity, flying back and forth between the cavity and a perch near the female. The female builds a cup shaped nest inside the cavity with no help from the male. The female lays between 5 and 8 pale blue eggs. The male Mountain Bluebird will feed the female while she is incubating and brooding the young. Incubations takes 13-17 days. The young are ready to leave the nest at about 17-23 days after hatching but will still be fed by the parents for up to another 3 to 4 weeks. Bluebirds can have up to two broods a year.

Every team needs it’s leader, but like every team, every crew needs its captain. That’s exactly what Andrew McCutchen represents not only for the Pirates but also for the city of Pittsburgh. McCutchen is a five time National League All-Star, along with winning the MVP in 2013. He also received the Gold Glove award in 2012 for best defensive Center Fielder in the National League (NL). McCutchen has won the Silver Slugger award for the best hitting Center Fielder in the NL from 2012-2015. Lastly in 2015 he won the Roberto Clemente award highlighting the player “who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individuals contributions to his team”. On and off the field, McCutchen proves what it takes to be a true leader. With McCutchen’s success, a whole new level of “swag” has been apparent with the whole team. The Pirates rarely “keep it cool” when scoring runs
or making great plays. They have been known to show off a little, but what else would you expect from pirates? However, this season hasn’t been as successful for McCutchen up to this point with a .252 AVG, 19 HRs, 58 RBI with an OBP of .330. His career stats are .293 AVG with 170 HRs and 616 RBI with an OBP of .382. He normally averages 21 HRs a season with 77 RBIs; so his home runs aren’t lacking very much but his RBIs are. Fortunately for McCutchen there is still one month left to play. Just like how every crew needs their Captain, every Captain needs his crew. Pittsburgh has been leading off with Josh Harrison who is very versatile defensively; he can play all of the infield positions as well as going to the outfield from time to time. This season Harrison has been limited to second base but he’s hitting .276 with 4 HRs and 55 RBI which isn’t

Next to McCutchen in the outfield are the “gentle giants”, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco. With the combination of Marte, Polanco, and McCutchen, not many baseballs are going to find the gaps in the outfield. This season has been a breakout year for Right Fielder Gregory Polanco, who is batting .266 with 21 HRs and 88 RBI. In the two seasons before 2016 he combined for 16 HRs and 85 RBIs. He’s definitely found his groove this season. Following Harrison and McCutchen in the lineup, Polanco is the right remedy to stack up runs.
Their team is full of silly characters that all fit together in a very unique way. These four players are always very fun to watch because most of the times they are producing runs and making it look fun. Then they have the dread-head John Jaso, and the international Shortstop Jung Ho Kang, along with versatile defensive man Sean Rodriguez who actually looks like a pirate with his rag over his head. They show boat and brag, but again what do you expect from Pirates?
In Left Field, Starling Marte hasn’t had as productive as a season as he would’ve liked only hitting 9 HRs with 46 RBI but he is batting .309. In

pirates? The Pittsburgh Pirates best replicate their team name. You can’t play like Mets, or Giants, or Mariners, but Pittsburgh does play like pirates. Pittsburgh hasn’t won a World Series since 1979 and hasn’t made it past the first round of playoffs since 1992 when they won the NL Championship against Atlanta. In 2013 (McCutchen’s MVP year) they beat the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Wild Card game but then lost the in the next round to the St. Louis Cardinals. Then in 2014 and 2015 they lost in the NL Wild Card Game to the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago Cubs. Yes, the Pirates are in one of the hardest divisions in baseball (NL Central) where you have to play best team in baseball currently the Chicago Cubs; and the best home run hitting team in the league the St. Louis Cardinals. But didn’t the pirates always steal from bigger boats? Maybe it’s time the Pittsburgh Pirates steal some wins from their division rivals so they can raise the Jolly Roger.
Currently the Chicago Cubs are in first place in the NL Central with an 89-48 record making them 18 games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals who are 7164. Winning the division seems like a long shot now, especially since the Cubs don’t look like they will be slowing down anytime soon. Fortunately the Pirates are only 3.5 games behind in the NL Wild Card Race trailing the San Francisco Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the New York Mets. With 27 more games this season will Andrew McCutchen be able to lead his Pirates to clinch Wild Card birth to keep their playoff chances alive? Or will they continue to play like real pirates and fail in the end like we’ve seen time and time again?

This summer, I spray painted bottles to make vases, and this week I thought it might be fun to use a similar technique on mason jars to make Jack-O'-Lanterns. I'm so glad I gave it a try because they turned out to be something I can't wait to put out on the front porch!

Directions 1. B ring pot with oil to a very light simmer over low heat without boiling it. Stir in pumpkin spice. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Place pumpkin spice infused oil in a jar and infuse for a couple days. 2. Place wax chips into a pot, setting the temperature to medium-high heat. Adding 4 tablespoons of stearic acid to the wax is optional. This is not required; however, stearic acid makes the wax harder and more durable. 3. Let the wax cool for a few minutes. 4. Add wick to jar and use tape to keep it up straight. 5. A dd oil to mason jar and fill remainder of mason jar with wax then stir to combine wax and oil. Do not pull on the wick. 6. P lace in freezer for 15-20 minutes and enjoy!

Purchasing from local producers builds a stronger community by encouraging meaningful relationships between producer and consumer. Local food is at its peak freshness and quality. Sourcing local food encourages a whole unprocessed food diet making it a much healthier option for you and your family. Since Guerrilla Craft Eats’ opening in July 2015 we have been on a quest to provide as much local and organic food as possible on our menu. Everything is made in truck starting with whole foods. We have forged some amazing relationships with local producers. Our chicken is pasture raised by Sue Kennedy at Kennedy Ranch in Lamoille. Dan and Diana Van Norman of Van Norman Ranches in Tuscarora raise the Wagyu/Angus beef that provides the foundation for our well known Guerrilla Burger. We are also pleased to announce that we recently found regional pork out of Silver Springs. We will be featuring Lahontan Valley Farms pork starting this month. Currently, our bread is baked by Franco in Sparks. We would love to find an Elko based bakery to work with for a hyperlocal option. Whatever we cannot source either locally or regionally, we do our utmost to make sure that it is organically grown and/or produced. Spirits, Ghosts and Things that go bump in the night.
Samhain, All Hallows Eve, All Saints Eve, Alls Soul Day, and Hallowed End are just a few names most of us may recognize as the very popular celebration of Halloween. It is believed that the veil between the spirit world and the living is so thin on that night allowing souls of the dead, spirits, or fairies to be invited to join in the lively celebrations for the end of Summer welcoming the beginning of Winter. For some this time is used to pay respect to our loved ones, including pets, who are no longer with us, for others it is a time for dressing up as your favorite character, getting candy, and doing a little mischief which we will not mention OR give you any ideas. Spirits/Ghost have been seen and talked about all through history and no one can really say if some of the encounters were small ones and maybe embellished a bit to make a good story such as the Washington Irvings 1820 classic, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or The Amityville Horror. Now days it seems no one is really running away from the possibility that they do exist with many people doing recordings themselves to share all over social media to try and prove to the rest of the world that they have encountered one. Ghost hunting has certainly become a popular hobby that includes obtaining various equipment to help make your hunting more intensified for recording sounds or visuals of a Spirit or Ghost. I highly suggest that you be very
careful to not trespass on any property, always properly ask for permission before entering into a building or bringing in any of your equipment. Not everyone believes in ghost or spirits but we all certainly pay a little more attention in October to things that may seem out of the ordinary. Sounds such as thumping, knocking, a door opening, items that are moved, dark outline of a person, smells, lights and more have been not only seen by many but have been actually recorded to be shown as proof that there is such a thing. Many non believers have been converted by various events, while others continually disbelieve that anything of the kind could ever happen leaning towards that some of us have lost our minds or made up stories. I am a believer and I am also pretty convinced that right here in Elko is a very active place for spirits or ghost of all kinds. Luckily I have had various witnesses with me to some crazy little things that have happened and although I do believe trust me I did everything possible to actually debunk or explain them. Being an owner of a business that deals with the various beliefs may draw this activity to me which does not scare me in the least as I am a firm believer in light and positivity and have never felt that spirits/ghost are negative things to run from. What is carbon monoxide? Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and toxic gas. Smoking a cigarette; running an internal combustion engine; and burning candles, fuel oil, wood, kerosene, natural gas, and propane may produce carbon monoxide. High levels of carbon monoxide can be produced when fuels are burned incompletely. High levels of carbon monoxide can be generated by internal combustion engines or by appliances that are defective or improperly installed or maintained. Carbon monoxide can also enter a home if an appliance venting system or chimney becomes blocked; for example, by a bird’s nest.
• Never use a barbecue grill, propane or charcoal, indoors for cooking or heating
The best way to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is to have a qualified service technician check your appliances and venting systems annually, preferably before the heating season begins. Other important measures include:
• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and use of vent-free appliances, including fireplaces and logs
• Keep chimneys, flues, and vents free of debris such as leaves and animal nests • Keep chimneys, flues, an vents free of snow and ice • Consider installing a UL-listed carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home • Never use a gas oven or range-top burners to provide space heating • Never use portable heaters indoors, unless they are designed and approved for indoor use
• Regularly check your appliance exhaust vents for blockage • Always open the chimney flue damper when you use your fireplace
• Never run an internal combustion engine such as your car, lawn mower, generator, or snow blower in enclosed areas such as your garage Carbon monoxide can be deadly! High levels of carbon monoxide can make you dizzy, give you headaches, or cause flu-like symptoms. In extreme cases, high levels of or extended exposure to carbon monoxide can result in brain damage or death. Young children; the elderly; people with heart disease; and those under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication are particularly susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide detectors are designed to sound an alarm when they sense excessive levels of carbon monoxide in the air. Pigeon Fever Keep Calm and Fly Spray ON! It’s every horse owner’s nightmare – pigeon fever season. Here is your guide to reducing the chances of your pasture pals coming down with this frustrating condition. “Pigeon fever,” or “Dryland Distemper” as it is sometimes referred to around here, is caused by a bacteria called Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Oddly enough, the disease caseous lymphadenitis, or CL, in our ruminants (cows, sheep, goats, llamas) is caused by the same bacteria. The good news is that it cannot be passed between equines and ruminants. The bad news is that it can live in the soils for a very long time, making getting rid of it on your property nearly impossible. The bacteria need an entry route through the skin in order to infect the horse, donkey, mule, or mini. Therefore, infections from pigeon fever are most commonly from fly bites and irritations. The single most efficacious thing you can do to prevent pigeon fever infections is to fly spray your horses at least once daily with a good quality fly spray, paying particular attention to the belly, chest, and groin. Fly sheets and masks are also beneficial but can leave sensitive parts such as the belly exposed. A second entry route can be from an open wound. If the horse lays down in infected soils, the wound could be infected with pigeon fever bacteria and spread this way. Keep wounds bandaged or covered until healed and clean wounds daily with an antibacterial cleanser. The symptoms of pigeon fever are broad. However, the most common presentation is a swollen chest and belly, resembling a pigeon breast. These swellings are typically caused by abscesses, or pockets of pus. Horses are quite good at walling off infections within their bodies. We can use this to our advantage when trying to clear up infections because once these abscesses come near the surface of the skin, we can open them up to allow for drainage. The abscesses should heal from the inside out, meaning adequate drainage should be established, and the wounds should be irrigated twice daily to prevent them from scabbing

over. Antibiotics should be considered once the abscesses are opened (not before!) to help shorten healing time. Fly repellant products such as SWAT are strongly recommend around the draining hole to prevent flies from getting covered in the bacteria and spreading it around. Although these take quite a bit of management and special home care, this is the simplest form of pigeon fever to deal with. The second set of symptoms are a little harder to detect. Instead of the abscesses being close to the surface of the skin, they form in the organs such as the liver, kidneys, lungs, or lymph nodes (similar to “bastard strangles”). These are much more difficult to diagnose as horses are often simply unthrifty or unkempt. Blood tests are often used to determine prognosis (survival). Long-term (6+weeks) antibiotic therapy is usually required. The last set of symptoms are slightly more intimidating to horse owners and veterinarians alike – these include leg edema or swelling, multiple draining tracts, lameness, fever (normal temp should be less than 102F), and weight loss. Aggressive antibiotic therapy is required to control these and necessary to prevent long-term or even permanent damage. Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent pigeon fever. However, should your horse become infected, it would be wise to ensure that he or she is current on tetanus vaccines. These vaccines may only last six months in some horses, so it likely will need to be boostered in the fall. Remember, if horses did not receive a booster shot with their first series of vaccines, they are not protected until after the booster has been given. Pigeon fever can happen to the even the healthiest of horses. Please do not hesitate to talk to your veterinarian about preventative measures as well as management of abscesses or antibiotic therapy. There is no need for you to limit the activities you do with your equines – around here, you just never know when the snow will come. So slather on the fly spray and enjoy your summer!

Helping Your 'Good Old Dog' Navigate

500,000 dogs a year in the United States.
Due to improved veterinary care and dietary habits, pets are living longer now than they ever have before. One consequence of this is that pets, along with their owners and veterinarians, are faced with a whole new set of age related conditions. By the numbers, “geriatric” signifies the point at which 75 percent of one’s anticipated lifespan has past. It varies, but cats and small dogs are generally considered geriatric at the age of 7. Larger breed dogs tend to have shorter life spans and are considered geriatric when they are

For us, that means getting out winter tires and making sure that we have enough wood or pellets to get us through; but what does that mean for our senior pets? Is your “Good Old Dog, Cat or Horse” winter ready? It is important to understand that old age in pets is not a disease, but a normal stage of life for pets and owners to navigate. As pets age, taking care of them becomes more difficult. Owners of aging pets often struggle with their pet’s dementia and incontinence – as well as navigating through the maze of end-of- life care decisions.

Thus, just as silver-haired men and women in their seventies and eighties now go traveling and white-water rafting and lead active, fulfilling lives — something that was once largely unthinkable — twelve-, fourteen-, and sixteen-year-old dogs can now continue to enjoy their usual romps and shenanigans with the help of modern veterinary medicine.
Basic Needs Of Older Pets
End-of-Life Care For Older Pets
It is important to understand that older pets are like older people. They are less able to thermoregulate, this makes them more sensitive to extreme temperature changes because of changes in their metabolism. We need to make sure that they have a warm place with blankets or some type of coat to stay warm. The same goes for heat, especially on extremely hot days. Seniors can dehydrate and don’t cope with changes as well. It is important to also moderate exercise for older pets, because heart and lung function do deteriorate. Senior pets also need a food that is formulated especially as a “senior diet”. These diets typically have fewer calories since metabolism slows with age.
Geriatric pets can develops many of the same problems seen in older people, such as: cancer, heart disease, kidney/urinary tract disease, liver disease, diabetes, joint/bone disease, senility, and weakness. A concern for many owners is what to do when their pet gets a terminal disease. Cancer kills 500,000 dogs a year in the United States and affects half of all dogs older than 10 years. Deciding whether or not to treat cancer aggressively is difficult for many pet owners. There are many things to consider: the cost of treatment, a pet’s quality of life after treatment, whether treatment is painful and how long a pet’s life can be extended.
It is important that pets are not overweight, because the extra weight will affect joint health. This is especially important in seniors as they are at high risk for osteoarthritis. This condition will become progressively more painful as the pet ages. If your senior pet is not as active, favors a limb, has difficulty standing, hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs, then they could have arthritis. Signs of arthritis often are similar to signs of normal aging, so if your pet seems to have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, the best thing to do is to have your veterinarian examine them, and then advise you as to what treatment plan would be best to help your pet deal with the pain. Do not give human pain medications to your pet without first consulting your veterinarian. Some human products, including over-the-counter medications, can be fatal for pets. Changes in the home environment may also help you deal with an older pet who is experiencing stiffness and/or pain. Orthopedic beds or stair steps maybe needed to help an animal up to higher places (so they don't have to jump), raised feeding platforms, etc. can help make your arthritic pet's life more comfortable.
Older dogs can also develop canine cognitive dysfunction, which is the human equivalent of Alzheimer’s. Studies conducted in the early 1990s were the first to identify brain changes in older dogs that were similar to brain changes seen in humans with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have not identified any genetic cause of why certain animals develop cognitive dysfunction, there are drugs and specific diets available to manage cognitive dysfunction. If you think that your pet is becoming senile, discuss it with your veterinarian.
Other common warning signs of disease in older pets are a decrease in appetite, increased thirst, and increased urination, blood in the urine, coughing, difficulty breathing, decrease exercise tolerance, painful mouth and vomiting. Before any medical signs become apparent, behavioral changes can serve as important indicators that something is changing in an older pet, which may be due to medical or other reasons. As a pet owner, you serve a critical role in detecting early signs of disease because you interact and care for your pet daily. Sometimes, the changes may seem contradictory – such as an older pet that has symptoms of hearing loss but also seems more sensitive to strange sounds.
Remember all senior pets require increased attention, including more frequent visits to the veterinarian, possible changes in diet and in some cases alterations to their home environment. There will always be that closeness with any pet that you have known for a long time. After all you have helped a “baby” who needed to be taught the rhythms of your home to a mature soul who can easily read your mood and provide comfort, protection or simply good company whenever it is needed.
