Whether you are 18 or 80, male or female, every guest will always get our Best Price up front. Every vehicle on our lot has our Best Price clearly hanging in the window 24/7 so you know just what to expect. Other dealerships negotiate hoping you will pay too much. This is Elko Motor Company’s Best Price Philosophy. Our non-commissioned sales consultants are paid based on how satisfied you are with your purchase, NOT on a percentage of the profit from your sales transaction. No hassle, no haggle, just One Low Price, Plain and Simple, Always!

2015 Elko Motorcycle Jamboree Concert Announcement The Elko Motorcycle Jamboree is proud to announce our “Rockin the Rubies” concert series for this year’s event, including the addition of a Friday Night Kick-Off Concert. Following our 15-year tradition, the jamboree will host a FREE concert in Elko’s downtown corridor this year with headliner Fortunate Son, America’s Tribute to CCR, as seen on The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands on AXS TV. Opening will be Appetite 4 Destruction; Los Angeles based tribute to Guns N’ Roses. Since 1994, Brad Ford has starred as John Fogerty, pioneering the Ultimate Creedence Clearwater Revival Tribute: FORTUNATE SON. This show quickly became known as “THE PREMIER” act celebrating the music of CCR & John Fogerty.
Combining timeless CCR favorites and Fogerty solo hits, Brad Ford & FORTUNATE SON truly personifies the spirit and grit of America’s Favorite Rock & Roll Band! This show is for all ages and unites classic rock, country, blues, and folk music fans together like no other tribute act can. Every show features the best of both worlds-timeless CCR classics and legendary Fogerty solo hits. From the swampy blues of BORN ON THE BAYOU & GREEN RIVER, to the country influences of BAD MOON RISING, LODI, & LOOKIN’ OUT MY BACK DOOR. Rock anthems such as PROUD MARY, CENTERFIELD, WHO’LL STOP THE RAIN, & HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN. Appetite 4 Destruction has become the highest audience drawing tribute to Guns N’
Roses in all of Southern California. Appetite 4 Destruction is honored that all of their sold out shows in 2013 were sponsored by Guitar Center. Authenticity is everything and Appetite 4 Destruction does not disappoint. Everything is there, including the Axl growling screams, The Duff bass tone and the Slash guitar mastery. With a library of material that spans the entire Guns N’ Roses career. All performed with the high adrenalin, take no prisoners intensity that Guns N’ Roses was famous for. As always a free concert, however if you desire to be up close and get the rockerview, VIP Tickets are available for $20 online beginning March 15th, through the website, elkomotorcyclejamboree.com.

Wanamaker WILDLIFE Exhibit How long has it been since you’ve seen the Wanamaker Wildlife Exhibit at the Northeastern Nevada Museum? Or (gasp) have you never seen it? You may be in for a big surprise!

A couple of years ago, we started looking carefully at all the animals, and decided the whole exhibit needed some attention. It had been 15 years since the wildlife wing was added to the museum, and it was starting to show its age. The wildlife wing came into existence when Jack Wanamaker, a big-game hunter from California, donated his collection of animals from around the world to the museum. He helped build a three-story addition to the Museum, with the animals on the main floor, art galleries upstairs, and storage in the basement. Hundreds of Mr. Wanamaker’s animals were exhibited in natural settings, and it has been a big favorite of visitors ever since.
cleaning and repair job in some cases. When all the animals looked as good as new, they tackled the natural landscaping, cleaning, replacing, adding… whatever needed to be done to make the natural setting look as good as the animals.
Recently the Museum exhibits staff hired Gary Powell of North Slope Taxidermy and he and his crew spent a couple of weeks doing a thorough
With the new, brighter lights the Museum staff realized the walls needed a new coat of paint, so that was the next, natural step. With the

You have all been there - after one thing looks nice and new, it makes everything else look a little older and a little more tired. The Museum realized that the lighting needed upgrading. The lighting for the entire exhibit was upgraded to new, state-of-the-art LED lights, which give off a better light which is closer to natural sunlight, are more energy-efficient, and don’t have to be replaced for years.

new paint job completed, they decided to replace a set of metal outside doors with glass ones that could let in even more natural light. The entire Wanamaker Wildlife Wing is almost like a brand new place, most comments are “looks wonderful!” What a difference all of these changes have made. If it has been a while, or you’ve never seen the Wanamaker Wildlife Wing at the Northeastern Nevada Museum, you will be amazed at the impressive and now, newly renovated exhibit.
The last Sunday of each month is Free Sunday, and members of the Museum can come in anytime for free. Check our Webpage – www. MuseumElko.org or call 738-3418 to see how to become a member. See you in the Wanamaker Wildlife Wing.

Cooking CONTRIBUTED BY MANDI RATLIFF OF CUCINA FRESCA
A huge food trend in recent years has been gluten-free diets. Gluten, a common protein found in wheat and other grains, can challenge well-being for many individuals. Cooking gluten-free requires a shift in ingredients and methods - but it’s all deliciously doable!
What is Gluten?
Gluten is a naturally occurring protein found in wheat. It’s part of the structure of the wheat’s endosperm, the starchy area surrounding the wheat germ that lies just under the bran, the outer covering of the kernel. Wheat gluten is actually two proteins, gliadin and glutenin. In cooking and baking, glutens give dough its stretchy character and form a structure around tiny air pockets.
What is gluten-free eating? WHO NEEDS A GLUTEN-FREE DIET? Some individuals, about 1% of people, have celiac disease. This is an autoimmune reaction to gluten where the body perceives ingested glutens as something to be attacked. This immune reaction results in a cluster of debilitating symptoms including serious damage to the small intestine. The treatment for celiac disease is to avoid dietary glutens. As well, a number of individuals, 6-7%, while not celiacs, may suffer from non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) in which several celiac symptoms may appear, but without small intestine damage. Other individuals with wheat allergies may be assisted in avoiding wheat exposure by following a gluten-free diet.

Barley • Pasta • Cake • Bread What foods contain gluten? While we typically think of wheat-based foods as gluten territory, other grains such as barley, rye, spelt, and triticale have similar gluten proteins that may cause similar reactions. Foods that contain gluten include bread, pasta, beer, crackers, cookies, cakes, and many more foods. Also, many foods may contain wheat-based additives such as soy sauce, salad dressings, egg substitutes, and other “hidden” sources of gluten from crosscontamination in processing plants.
What foods are naturally gluten-free? Most foods do not contain gluten –meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, fruits, vegetables, wine, and more. More specifically, many whole grains do not contain gluten – quinoa, some oats, rice, corn, buckwheat, teff, millet, and others. Always check labels carefully for the presence of gluten in processed foods, or look for “100% gluten-free” assurances.
Gluten-free eating awareness Those following a gluten-free regimen need to be aware of potential nutrient deficits that such a restriction necessarily entails. It’s important to include grains in the diet for the B vitamins, fiber, iron, niacin, thiamine, phosphorous, zinc, riboflavin, calcium, and other essential elements found in grains. It’s important to gain the diagnosis of celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity from a health care professional and dietary treatment advice from a registered
dietician. Self-diagnosis and self-treatment with a glutenfree regimen may mask the presence of celiac disease, or produce nutritional deficiencies resulting in unintended outcomes. The FDA guidelines state that a gluten-free designation requires there to be less than 20 parts per million of gluten in the food.
The mindful effect Individuals may report improvement in health and well-being by following a gluten-free regimen; this may or may not be related to gluten elimination, but rather the benefit of greater nutritional awareness, less junk food, and greater diversity in grain sources. Consult qualified health care professionals for an assessment of your situation.
Lemon-Ricotta pancakes are a great choice whether or not you need to follow a gluten-free diet. First and foremost, you’ll enjoy their fabulous taste – a bright lemony flavor in every bite thanks to a healthy quantity of lemon zest. Secondly, the primary components, fresh ricotta cheese and eggs, lend a high protein profile to these pancakes that are otherwise carb heavy in their traditional form.
Lemon-Ricotta Pancakes Feeds 6 Whenever we have some leftover fresh ricotta – and darn, there’s a problem – we make these lemon-ricotta pancakes. They’re lovely and lemony, creamy with the ricotta and not too dense with flour. You might think that beating the egg whites is a bit fussy, but the lightness you’ll find from this is worth the small effort. Just try to make them last longer than 5 minutes.
1-1/3 cups fresh ricotta 4 large eggs, separated 3 tablespoons sugar 1-1/2 tablespoons grated lemon zest 105 grams All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour Mix (see page 22) 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt Pinch cream of tartar Melted butter for oiling the pan
COMBINING THE WET INGREDIENTS. Whisk together the ricotta, egg yolks, sugar, and lemon zest in a large bowl. Set aside. COMBINING THE DRY INGREDIENTS. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Scatter the dry ingredients over the wet ingredients and fold them together with a rubber spatula until just combined. BEATING THE EGG WHITES. Put the egg whites in the bowl of a stand mixer (Or you can use a bowl, a whisk, and your strong arms). Beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar until they form soft peaks, about 5 minutes. Fold the egg whites into the batter gently. Remember that you don’t want to crush that lovely fresh ricotta or the structure of the egg whites. MAKING THE PANCAKES. Set a cast-iron skillet over mediumhigh heat. Grease the pan liberally (and by liberally, I mean a lot) with butter. Pour the pancake batter into the buttered pan, about 1/4 cup at a time. When bubbles have started to form and pop on top of the pancakes, flip them. Cook for about 1 minute more, and set aside on a plate. Continue until you have cooked all the pancakes. All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour Mix
Grinding your own flour
It’s easy to make. All you have to do is mix up the following, based on the ratio of 40 percent whole-grain flour to 60 percent starches and white flours.
Gluten-free products and ingredients are available in abundance these days at health food markets and in featured sections of grocery stores. In particular, all types of whole grains are now available in quantities and varieties that support a gluten-free lifestyle. It’s easy to turn whole grain seeds into flour with the right equipment. For our all-purpose “white” flour mix, we ground our own millet into flour.
I think of this as the transitional mix. We’re all so used to white flour in our food that we kind of crave out glutenfree baked goods to be white as well. I understand. Try as I might, I could just never get behind a wholegrain pie crust. So I use this AP flour mix for pies, cakes, biscuits, and some cookies.
400 grams millet flour 300 grams sweet rice flour 300 grams potato starch
Dump them all in a large container (we like the large plastic containers restaurants use to store their food, which we buy at restaurant supply stores) and shake. Shake and shake and shake harder until all the flours have become one color. There. That’s your flour. Whenever you want to bake, just reach for that container and measure out how many grams you need for that recipe.
IT’S FRESHER, MORE NUTRITIOUS! Grain seeds have a seed germ, seed endosperm (starch), and a seed hull (bran). The seed germ has an oily character that may turn rancid over time. In commercial flours, the germ might be excluded or preservatives added to extend the shelf life. By grinding your own flour, the entire seed is used and the flour is at its freshest.
Pizza is one of those foods that would be difficult to give up on any diet. The solution? Use a gluten-free crust and
Here’s one of the main reasons I write my recipes in weight. What do you do with this mix if you can’t do rice flour because of your rice allergy? Just substitute tapioca flour or arrowroot instead. You can’t find millet? Try sorghum for your whole-grain flour, or buckwheat.

refrigerator for not only pizza, but other flatbread uses.
This recipe demonstrates the use of Ms. Ahern’s “Allpurpose, gluten-free white flour mix.” As she explains, we’re a white flour culture in so many ways, and our expectations for gluten-free variations carry this bias along. This mix features millet, sweet rice flour, and potato starch.
Recipe note: The featured recipes use weight
measurements for the dry ingredients. As our featured cookbook author explains, grains vary in their density. (Remember, a cup of feathers weighs less than a cup of sand, etc.) By using weight measurements with alternative grains, the results are more accurate and grain substitutions easily made.

cheese that you love. This dough uses yeast to built texture and flavor, and Ms. Ahern’s all-purpose “white” flour mixture. While it handles differently than an elastic, tasting canvas for topping with your pizza favorites. It’s a great do-ahead dough to have on hand in the
BEST WAY TO BAKE PIZZA CRUST At its essence, pizza crust is a form of flatbread that calls for a very high heat. At home, a grill works well, or do as we did and use a pizza stone in a very hot oven. Pizza stones are designed to withstand very high heat while baking flatbreads quickly. An added bonus – pizza stones do a great job keeping second helpings warm while eating the first slice!
MORE VARIETY, MORE FLAVOR! Freshly ground flours have better flavor. The grain’s nutty characteristics and unique flavors are at their peak immediately after grinding resulting in greater flavor in your final dish. While different grains may be available, access to their flour versions may be limited. Grinding your own allows access to the broad range of different grains.

For small quantities of whole grain flour, a Vitamix machine does a great job. Grind amounts that will be used soon for maximum freshness. For larger quantities of flour, invest in the Vitamix Dry Grains Container (and blade) or an electric grain mill.

Grilled Pizza Feeds 6 This was inspired by Carol Field’s recipe from The Italian Baker, one of the best baking books of all time. She’s a genius. Her dough called for up to eight hours of rising. I tried that here – not good. Because there’s no gluten in these doughs, the structure that the proteins in the flours and the psyllium provide is pretty fragile. Eventually, the gas bubbles formed by the yeast poke apart the structure. I never let a gluten-free dough rise more than two hours. Generally, it’s about an hour. The only exception to this rule is when you let the dough rise overnight in the refrigerator because the cold makes the rise much slower. That practice builds extraordinary flavor. And after all that work? Pizza dough for the grill.
750 grams All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour Mix (see below) 1 tablespoon whole or powdered psyllium husks 1 envelope (2-1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 large egg, at room temperature 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 cups warm water, at about 110°F MAKING THE DOUGH. Mix the flour, psyllium husks, yeast, sugar, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer. With the stand mixer running, add the egg and oil. Slowly, drizzle in half the water and continue mixing the dough. Pour in more water and mix until you have a sticky ball of dough that slumps off the paddle when you stop the mixer. Do not add more flour. Gluten-free doughs are wetter than gluten doughs. LETTING THE DOUGH RISE. Put the dough into a lightly greased bowl. Let the dough rise until the texture has firmed into something close to a traditional pizza dough, 1 to 2 hours. SHAPING THE DOUGH. Oil your hands again. Gently turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Cut it into 6 equal pieces and form them into balls. Cover them with a damp cloth and let the dough rest for another 30 minutes. GRILLING THE PIZZA. Fire up the grill. Get it as hot as you can. (If you have a thermometer on your grill, it should read over 700°F.) Roll out each of the balls of dough into an oval about 6 inches long. (It might help to roll them out between 2 pieces of lightly greased parchment paper, to avoid sticking.) Place the oval of

dough, oil side down, onto the grill. Repeat with the remaining dough. (If you have a small grill, you may have to do this in batches.) Put the lid on the grill and cook until the bottom of the pizzas are set and have grill marks, 4 to 6 minutes. Pull the pizza crusts off the grill. THIS IS WHERE YOU TOP YOUR PIZZAS. Of course, you may use anything. However, I like to keep it simple. Brush the grilled side with extra-virgin olive oil and tomato sauce and put the pizzas back on the grill for 3 minutes. Add some fresh mozzarella you have torn with your hands. Close the cover of the grill and let the pizzas cook until the mozzarella has melted. Take the pizzas off the grill and toss on some fresh basil leaves and a sprinkle of kosher salt. FEEL LIKE PLAYING? If you want, you can make this the night before you want to cook it, with cool water, and put it in the refrigerator. Let the dough come to room temperature before you grill it. You can take out a hunk of dough to make a little pizza every night for a week. This pizza also bakes up great in the oven. Set your oven on as high as it can go and preheat for 30 minutes. If you have a pizza stone, please put it in before you turn on the oven. You can use a pizza tray, a large piece of parchment paper, or put the pizza dough directly onto the pizza stone. Use half the dough this recipe yields for a 12-inch pizza. Also, you can use this dough to make gluten-free naan and gluten-free pita bread.
Play with the seasonings here. You could work with spices that you feel go well with turkey or pork.
Fruit is always an ideal sweet ending to any meal. And, a fruit crumble assembles easily while offering just the right accent of nutty-tasting crumble. This topping uses Ms. Ahern’s Whole Grain, Gluten-free flour mix. The flour has a nutty flavor that’s further enhanced by the addition of chopped walnuts. Pears, apples or other fruits would each yield a fabulous result for this baked dessert. Plus, you’ll love the aromas wafting through the kitchen as this bakes – aromatherapy meets scrumptious!
Pear-Walnut Crumble Feeds 4 I love a good crumble. Honestly, other than pie, this is my favorite kind of dessert. Warm supple pieces of fruit surrounded by maple, oats, walnuts, and butter – need I say more? Maybe just this: this is about the easiest weeknight dessert you can make. Your kids will be grateful too.
2 pounds firm Bosc or Bartlett pears 6 tablespoons maple syrup MAKING THE TOPPING. Put the walnuts onto a cutting board. Using a sharp chef’s knife, chop the walnuts until they are very small pieces.
1/4 teaspoon orange flower water (optional) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest 3/4 cup gluten-free rolled oats 1/2 cup walnut halves 100 grams Whole-Grain Gluten-Free Flour Mix (see below) 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
In a large bowl, combine the tasted oats, chopped walnuts, flour, and cinnamon. Add the butter. Work the butter into the flour mixture with your hands until the mixture is crumbly with some visible butter chunks. Drizzle it with the remaining 3 tablespoons of maple syrup and work that in. Plop the crumble topping over the pears in the pie pan, distributing it evenly.
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
BAKING THE CRUMBLE. Bake the crumble until the pears are knife-tender and the edges of the crumble are bubbling with hot juices, about 45 minutes.
PREPARING TO BAKE. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
FEEL LIKE PLAYING? If you can’t eat oats, even certified glutenfree ones, try quinoa flakes here.
PREPARING THE PEARS. Cut the pears in half. Peel and core them. Cut each pear half into 5 slices lengthwise, then dice them the other way.
If you can’t have nuts, try sunflower seeds, pulsed a bit. If you can eat nuts, we think hazelnuts would be wonderful here too.
MAKING THE FILLING. In a 9-inch pie pan, combine the diced pears, 3 tablespoons of the maple syrup, the orange flower water (if using), lemon juice, and lemon zest. Set aside.
Orange flower water is the baker’s secret weapon. Just the tiniest splash makes desserts like this mysteriously good to the people who eat it. “What is it? Why is this so good?” You’ll hear them ask. You’ll just smile and be grateful for that bottle of orange flower water in your pantry.
TOASTING THE OATS. Set a small skillet over medium-high heat. Toss in the oats. Cook, flipping the oats in the pan occasionally, until they smell toasty, 5 to 10 minutes.
Mix pears and apples together for even more warmth.

3. Local Decision-Making Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.
7. Public Benefits and Costs Local stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.
4. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy Compared to chain stores, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community.
8. Environmental Sustainability Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers-which in turn are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.
5. Job and Wages Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do. 6. Entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class.
9. Competition A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. Product Diversity A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

Who’s Awake, Me Too! CONTRIBUTED BY LOIS PORTS, BRISTLECONE AUDUBON CHAPTER
Great-horned Owls proclaim their territories using deep, soft hoots with a stuttering rhythm: hoo-h’HOOhoo-hoo. Many people think the call seems to say, “Who’s awake, me too!” The male and female of a breeding pair may perform a duet of alternating calls, with the female’s voice higher in pitch than the male’s. Usually, territorial hooting decreases in February or March at the beginning of egg laying. These owls are some of the earliest-breeding birds in North America, in part because of the lengthy nightfall at this time of year and also it may give the owl a competitive advantage over other raptors. In most of North America, courtship is from October to December and mates are chosen by December to January. This species is strictly monogamous with pairs typically breeding together year after year. Like all owls they do not build their own nests, instead they use nests built by hawks, crows or other large birds. Great-horned Owls may line the nest with a few shreds of bark or downy feathers but they seldom spend much effort in this. Nests are seldom reused in later years since they tend to deteriorate over the breeding season. The female incubates 1-4 eggs for 30-37 days while the male brings her food. When hatched the young are helpless and covered with soft down. The young remain in the nest for about 6 weeks, and then climb out onto nearby branches. At this stage they are often referred to as “branchers”. They may even tumble into surrounding low shrubs or onto the ground. Their parents are nearby and continue to care for them. You can help fledglings by keeping your dogs and cats in the house during this short period. They begin taking short flights at 7 weeks, and can fly well at 9-10 weeks. Both parents feed and tend the young for several months, often as late as September or October. Like most owls, Great-horned Owls have keen hearing and keen vision in low light enabling them to hunt successfully at night. These powerful hunters commonly use a sit-and-wait approach. They’ll watch from a perch then swoop silently down on passing prey, seizing it with their talons. When clenched, a Great-horned Owl’s strong talons require a force of 28 pounds to open. The owls use this deadly grip to sever the spine of large prey. Great-horned owls take advantage of whatever prey is available. They have the widest prey base of any North American owl. Most of their diet consists of rabbits, mice, rats, skunks, squirrels, and other raptors. Occasionally they also eat
reptiles, amphibians, and even large insects. Great-horned owls may consider small pets as prey also due to their opportunistic and generalist hunting behaviors. If you are interested about learning more about the wildlife and flora of our area please feel welcome to attend a Bristlecone Audubon meeting or request to receive their monthly newsletter. Bristlecone Audubon Chapter typically meets on the third Friday of each month from October to May. The April 24th meeting will be about the Bison of Yellowstone National Park presented by Peter Bagley, Great Basin College Biology Professor. (Room 208 of the EIT Building, GBC, Room 208) Field trips are held from June through September. THE GREAT BASIN CHAPTER OF THE MULE DEER FOUNDATION IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE OUR
21ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING BANQUET Over twenty years ago, the concept of giving something back to mule deer was a dream of Emmett Burroughs. As Emmett traveled around the country, hunting and filming mule deer, he realized that many of us take this awesome species for granted. Think about what the world was like in 1988. Mule deer had been extremely abundant; right up until the winters of 1983-84. Across the West, the record snowfall lingered long into spring and early summer. Many mule deer and black-tailed deer perished; mostly starving for lack of food covered by snow and from cold temperatures. A few years later, Emmett observed that mule deer populations had not rebounded from this die-off. Many factors contributed to mule deer not coming back; loss of habitat, predators, poaching, highways crossing through the middle of transitional ranges, and subdivisions being built on winter ranges. State wildlife agencies were busy
trying to grow more elk and dealing with endangered species issues. On top of that, funding to state wildlife agencies was in decline. Mule deer management, which had been a staple of most fish and wildlife agencies, was taken for granted. It was as if mule deer, which were at one time ‘the’ premier big game species, were no longer worthy of prominence. Emmett gathered together a few of his close friends and acquaintances and asked them to think back at how much they had taken mule deer for granted. He challenged them with the famous words, “We must give something back to mule deer and black-tailed deer.” In July 1988, the Mule Deer Foundation was incorporated and now is your chance to give back!

I’m sure that you are ready to pack your sweaters away until fall. But WAIT! Why not “redo” that sweater into something better. I choose two different projects and recycled 7 sweaters! TIP- do your sweaters have fuzz all over them. Don’t toss them, shave them! Yep that’s what I said, shave them. Take your fuzzy sweater and lay it flat. You will want to use the most basic razor. No moisture or lotion strips. I bought the cheapest razor I could find. Now lightly start shaving your sweater. Do not push or pull hard, you don’t want any snags or holes. In no time you should have a good size pile of fuzz and your sweater should be like new again!
First make a 7” cut down one shoulder. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon. I made mine 25” long. Now roll the edges and pin in place. You can roll the ribbon into to the rolled edge or sew on after. Either way all you need to do now is sew the rolled edge and attach the ribbon. Tie the ribbon in a bow a TADA you’re done. NEXT IS THE HEART CUT OUT SWEATER. What you will need:
t MAKE A SPRING SWEATER My first project was to re-style an old sweater into a SPRING sweater. I picked two sweaters, both are a lighter weight with thinner yarn. Keep in mind you will be wearing the sweater in warmer temps, so you probably don’t want a thick wool sweater. FIRST IS THE COLD SHOULDER SWEATER. What you will need: - 1 light weight sweater - Sewing supplies (You can hand sew this one) - Ribbon
46
APRIL 2015 | EVERYTHINGELKO.COM
- 1 sweater - Sewing supplies (I do recommend using a sewing machine for this one) -Paper Please take note. Your heart will be MUCH larger than when you cut it out. Start small and make larger if you choose. Start by cutting a heart out of paper. Then center the heart on the sweater. Cut. Now roll the edges and pin in place. Begin sewing. Be sure that your stitches are catching the entire rolled edge. If not you will have a frayed portion. If you did miss a couple edges you can always hand sew those done. Now put it on to see if you want the heart bigger -If not, you’re done!
t NOW WE WILL MAKE SWEATER PILLOWS I have seen these in Pottery Barn but never wanted to pay the expensive price. I love how mine turned out. I picked mostly grey, but then a punch of color with pink. For this project I shopped our local second hand stores. I bought 4 sweaters from Mish Mash & Muddle and I found 4 pillows at F.I.S.H. Now is a great time to buy sweaters, they are all on clearance! All I spent on everything was $22. This is a great project for any damaged sweaters you may have since we will be cutting them up. What you will need:
Michael G. Fauci General Contractor State License #7513-A
COMMERCIAL • RESIDENTIAL TENTANT IMPROVEMENT • REMODELING P.O. Box 281706, Lamoille, NV
702.595.2046 mfauci@mgfauci.com
- Throw pillow - Old sweater
Fauci Construction Since 1935
- Sewing supplies (I did both machine & hand sew) - Ruler or some sort of straight edge - Buttons (optional) To begin pull your sweater inside out. Put the pillow in the sweater to see what you’ll need to cut and which direction you want the sweater to be. Start with the top by cutting off the neck line. Pin in place. Sew. Now cut off the arms. Pin in place, make sure it’s straight. For the bottom you can either bring the bottom of the sweater around to the front and attach it with buttons, or cut off the bottom and sew half way. Now turn your sweater right side in and stuff your pillow in it. Hand sew to finish.
t “Having a friend by your side makes everything better. Thank you Lisa Turner for all your help. Chatting, sipping tea and crafting is a perfect Saturday afternoon. I love you-Tina” So there you have it- two new spring sweaters and cute, cuddly pillows to warm up your couch or chairs.
t

Downtown Elko Everything Elko is proud of its community from the stores to the outdoors. We want to highlight a gem that’s in our area and that is Downtown Elko. This small stretch of Elko offers everything from kitchen supplies at Cucina Fresca to outdoor goods at Cedar Creek. How about jewelry at Blohms or a hidden treasure at Mish-Mash and Muddle. Coffee, lunch, mining supplies even decorating items at Hayley’s. I could go on and on, but the best way to see it is to shop it. A must stop shop is The Shabby Shanty located at 178 Idaho St. The store is huge and full of gorgeous items for every room in your home including your closet! The Shabby Shanty offers up many stores within the store. One of them is called “Shannon’s Store”. For those of you that were as heart broken as I was when “What2Wear” closed their doors back in January let me warm your heart. Shannon is back and bringing us all the amazing accessories and clothing we use to gather from her old store. However this new look and location is bright, light, soft and subtle. You are sure to fall in love with a number of tops not to mention leggings and dresses. Shannon has filled her little store with great earrings, necklaces and a great assortment of scarves and handbags.
Show your support for small businesses and downtown Elko. Take an afternoon to eat, drink, walk and shop. I hope to see you there!

Google. Apple. Facebook. Most of us probably recognize all of these company names. They’re leaders in their fields and are respected organizations throughout the world. A little-known fact you might not be familiar with? According to a recent news article1, they all have chiropractic in common. That’s right–each of these companies has workplace health clinics. This means that the employees for each company have a health care practice they can go to on-site to meet their health concerns. MAINTAINING HEALTH NOW FOR A BETTER LIFE
GIVING YOUR FULL POTENTIAL
Each of these companies’ clinics includes a chiropractor to address their employees’ health needs. These powerful organizations are sending a message chiropractic has been sharing for years: that maintaining your health now leads to decreased health care costs down the road and can enhance your productivity in all areas of your life.
While we may not all have the good fortune to work for a company that provides us with chiropractic care, this illustrates the growing realization about chiropractic’s positive impact on health. Absences from work can cost companies and employees billions each year.

What everyone looks at first, and what you look at first thing in the morning. Is your skin dull? Something sweet may help- HONEY! Mix 1 tsp. honey with 1 tsp lemon juice Apply it to your face gently in upward motions. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Lemon acts as a bleaching agent while honey soothes the skin leaving it radiant. You can brighten your face even more with a HONEY & OATMEAL MASK. Mix 1 egg yolk, 2 T Honey, 2 T finely powdered oats Apply paste to your face with upwards strokes. Leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Do this mask twice a week for best results.

Now for ICE- I know winter is over but believe you will love this chilly treatment. The benefits of this popular morning and evening ritual to get better looking skin are astounding. This chilly facial naturally beautifies your skin like nothing else. You will notice-Glowing skin, Reduces blemishes,Reduces dark circles and it prevents wrinkles Here’s how-Start your ice facial by thoroughly cleansing the face. Next wrap one or two ice cubes in a soft washcloth, gauze or other soft cloth. When the ice begins to melt and the cloth is damp, apply to the face. Hold the washcloth on the different areas of the face for about one to two minutes. Move the ice cube(s) gently with circular movements up along the chin and jaw line, up the cheeks and along the forehead and along the nose and take special care underneath the eyes. A couple thing to remember• Icing is often done without covering the ice. If you chose to do this, you’ll probably need to wear gloves (the ice will become too cold to hold for long with a bare hand). •D on’t be concerned if using ice directly on the skin doesn’t appeal to you. You’ll get the same effects when holding the ice with a washcloth. • If you use a bare ice cube, don’t apply the ice straight from the freezer. Extreme cold can break the capillaries under the skin. You also don’t want to use bare ice on the skin that already has broken capillaries or use the ice too long. • Stop if the cold becomes too uncomfortable. Avoid icing one area for more than 15 minutes. • For additional skin benefits, you can infuse the water for the ice cubes with lemon, rosewater, green tea, cucumber, chamomile tea, and other skin-loving ingredients depending on your skin care needs.
BODY
,
Exfoliating- Peppermint Sugar Scrub Ingredients 1 1/2-2 C sugar 1/2-1 C coconut oil 4-6 drops peppermint essential oil 1 tsp vitamin e oil 1-3 drops red food coloring or soap colorant Instructions-Melt coconut oil in microwave for 30 seconds or until it becomes liquid. Mix in essential oil and vitamin e. Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Divide scrub in half and use food coloring in one batch. Fill mason jar by alternating red and white scrub. Store in airtight container. Caffeine scrub - More than just smooth skin Cellulite enemy #1 is caffeine, which tightens and provides antioxidants to the skin when applied topically. When applied religiously, it has been shown to reduce the appearance of cellulite—especially over time. Ingredients 1 C coffee grounds 6 T coconut oil 3 T sea salt or sugar Empty jar Instructions-Measure out the dry ingredients and combine in a large measuring cup or bowl. Melt the coconut oil in the microwave if solid, and add to the mixture. Mix well. Transfer contents to a waterproof jar or container. In the shower, apply your scrub to areas with cellulite. Massage the scrub onto skin in a circular motion before rinsing. Repeat every time you shower for best results. Et volià!
MOISTURIZE , Ingredients 1/3 C coconut oil 1 T beeswax 5 drops lavender essential oil Instructions-Melt the coconut oil and beeswax together in a double boiler on your stove top. (I just use a measuring cup in a saucepan of water.) Once melted, add lavender oil and remove from heat. Let cool completely. Using an electric beater,
whip the cooled lotion. This step may be unnecessary but I find that adding a little air to the lotion provides for a smoother consistency and a better mixture. Your lotion is ready to go! Since there is no water added to this mixture, it should be shelf stable until the expiration date of the coconut oil that you used. Well there you have it. Your skin is sure to feel better, smell amazing and look stunning. APRIL 2015 | EVERYTHINGELKO.COM

“She is such a huge help to everyone. She doesn’t know how to say no and always goes above and beyond! She is constantly volunteering in the community and is always involved in something. She is just so giving.” Belinda works at Bonanza produce, so as you can imagine she is quite the busy lady to begin with. Then you go ahead and throw in all of her extracurricular activities and it makes for one chaotic schedule! Belinda is happily married and has been with her Husband for 37 years, they have three children and are the proud Grandparents to four Grandchildren. Belinda loves to keep involved in just about everything. Ranging from Boy Scouts to Girl Scouts, FFA to 4H (Both Spring Creek and Elko Chapters) and helping out with all of her Churches activities, it is one thing right after the other.
“If I know someone has a need, especially with food I always try to help. “ Interviewing Belinda you could tell that she is a woman who tries to utilize her resources and fulfill all needs others are met with. It is a wonderful thing to encounter people who are so giving and willing to put others needs before their very own and Belinda does just that. It is actions like this that cause a wonderful ripple effect and help influence others to follow in suit.
Thank you for all that you do Belinda and for being a giving good Neighbor.

“You may be only one person in this world, but to one person at one time, you are the world.” ANONYMOUS
Recently, I listened in on a conversation between a seasoned retiree and his younger friend. He reminisced, “My wife blessed me with hard working and intelligent children. I didn’t graduate from high school but they are college educated and each one is very successful and highly regarded in our community.” He paused as he remembered times passed, and his young friend responded, “Your wisdom played an enormous part in their lives.” We are influenced by parents, friends, coworkers and casual acquaintances. Good guidance builds confidence, encourages us and is constructive in ways that may not surface until the distant future. Many volunteers are retired, some are semi-retired working professionals and an impressive number of volunteers are relatively young. All are hardworking individuals who selflessly donate their time to
positively affect the quality of life for others in the community. No matter what their age or their career status, the heart of each volunteer holds a unique wisdom and experience. During the week of April 12-18, community members and organizations will recognize National Volunteer Appreciation Week. This is a time set aside to celebrate the kindness and generosity of thousands of caring individuals who choose to share their knowledge, talents and insight to teach, mentor and serve others. If you are a volunteer – Thank You! If you know a volunteer, be sure to pass along the gratitude by acknowledging that our overall quality of life is enhanced because of their heartfelt generosity.

WHY MUSIC? WHY YOUNG CHILDREN? Young Children and Even Babies? Children develop basic music competency, that is, they carry a tune and keep a rhythm, easiest when they’re young. By young I mean birth to five or six years old. You can observe your baby’s response to music Music educators say many children will begin to The sense of hearing is the first sense to develop; it develops before baby is born. Babies hear and respond to music when only a few days old, and gradually their response becomes more controlled, deliberate, and sustained, but brand new babies love to be sung to. The face of the baby will brighten and her attention focus on your mouth when you sing close to her face. If you sing to your baby on a regular basis she’ll exhibit a particular movement pattern when you start singing such as vigorous leg kicking, tongue movement, or arm waving. Most babies move physically when music starts or stops, and often will show a “startle response” when the music changes, even when they’re asleep. Watch your baby. She may stop her usual movements and stare intently or freeze when music comes on. When it stops she may change movement again. We can support that development. We support language learning by listening and encouraging. We can support music learning by repeating the sound she makes when she hears music and waiting for her to once more respond to us, and then answering her back, engaging in a “conversation” of sorts!
Intellectual development of your baby I TEACH MUSIC TOGETHER CLASSES FOR CHILDREN 5 YEARS AND UNDER AND A CAREGIVER/PARENT. SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS APRIL 7, 8, 10:15 AM AND WILL FINISH AFTER 10 CLASSES IN JUNE. CALL 775-753-7825 AND CHECK FACEBOOK PAGE.

Your child’s brain every day develops millions of neural pathways she’ll use throughout her lifetime. The more the baby uses these pathways the thicker they become. The reverse is true, also. When pathways in the brain aren’t used they disappear, so if these pathways for music aren’t used by about age 8 they’re lost. This period in the baby’s early life is when the brain is most susceptible to connecting neurons into thick paths. We can learn music later in life but it’s harder. Neural biologists suggest the best time to shape the most efficient pathways between points is in early life when the brain is most open to shape new paths. The child’s first six years are when the window is fully open for musical growth and development. That’s when children can unscramble and organize the listening images of music easiest. How well and how quickly a child unravels the mystery of the culture’s music is largely dependent on the environmental stimulation that parents, caregivers, provide.
sing by themselves when they’re about eighteen months old. Some children will be earlier, some later. How we support them will affect when they begin to sing. Your baby can’t experiment with sounds or songs she hasn’t experienced, so it’s important to sing to your child, move your baby’s feet, tap on her tummy, while you sing close so she can watch your mouth. Sing while you’re changing her diaper or bathing or feeding her. Children learn best from those adults who love them and live with them; these adults are a catalyst for musical growth. Music how-to skills can be learned from a teacher, but the motivation to enjoy music-making can be learned only from people who care for the baby. Very young children learn readily and retain music patterns throughout their lives. If we miss that early “window” of learning certain brain neurons set aside for such learning will be discarded.
Young Children are designed to teach themselves music The following story is one I read on Facebook. I believe young children come into our lives with a unique connection to higher knowing. They understand what it is they need to learn, and they are drawn to music naturally. “In 2007, Washington Post writer Gene Weingarten and classical violinist Joshua Bell undertook an experiment. Bell, one of the greatest violinists in the world, played for 45 minutes in a Washington, D.C. subway station during rush hour, incognito in jeans and a Washington Nationals baseball cap. Interview magazine said that Bell’s playing “does nothing less than tell human beings why they bother to live,” but almost no one stopped to hear. A hidden camera videotaped Bell’s performance and in 45 minutes, though more than 1,100 people passed by, only 27 tossed money in Bell’s violin case for a total of less than $33, and only 7 people actually stopped. In Weingarten’s words, ‘There was no ethnic or demographic pattern to distinguish the people who stayed…or the ones who gave money…..Whites, Blacks, Asians, young, old, men, or women. The behavior of one demographic, however, remained absolutely consistent. Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. And every single time, a parent scooted the kid away.’”
Children, drawn by music. They instinctively know something the rest of us have forgotten.

Vegetable gardening in the high desert presents unique challenges. Learn how to successfully grow a garden in your backyard. Landscape designer Elise Zvirzdin will discuss techniques, soil, mulching, seeds and more. Zvirzdin will also compare pioneer techniques of gardening to modern methods, and will explain why the traditional methods for working the soil are often best.
Margaret Breen, along with her husband Patrick and seven children, set out for California in the spring of 1846. Along the trail they joined with a number of other emigrants to form what has become known as the Donner Party. After experiencing unimaginable horrors in the Sierras, the Breen family survived the journey, one of only two families to make it through without loss of life. In later years, the Breens were accused by some of selfishness, and of hoarding their food. Others hailed them as heroes. This presentation, by Dr. Doris Dwyer, separates the enduring myths of this iconic tragedy from the surviving historical record.

The public is invited to a special celebration of Nevada’s 150 birthday at the Northeastern Nevada Museum on April 25, 3-5 pm to launch the book Women’s Legacy: 150 Years of Excellence. Women of Diversity Productions interviewed women from every county in Nevada for the state sesquicentennial celebration. The fifteen women honored by the project from Elko County are Joan Anderson, Lina Blohm, Pamela Borda, Cynthia Delaney, Anita Franzoia, Lori Gilbert, Mary Korpi, Susan Martsolf, Cathy McAdoo, Ester Quilici, Jean Spratling, Sarah Sweetwater, Gwen Anne Thacker, Catherine Wines and Claudia Wines.
Dr. Marlene J. Adrian, and Denise M. Gerdes of Las Vegas co-edited this book to highlight the roles and contributions of Nevada’s women. The project was initiated in 2014 to educate and promote the value of women throughout our first 150 years of statehood. Each individuals’ video clip is online at www. nevadawomensvirtualcenter.org/; click on Legacy Videos. You can then click on an individual to hear a short version of their video. Full interviews will be available sometime in the summer on the site. Their biographies appear in the book that will be available for a donation of $35 at the celebration on April 25. Interviewees as well as Dr. Adrian will be available to sign the books. At 4 pm special guest speakers including co-Editor Adrian will introduce the project. City Mayor, Chris Johnson will honor each woman with their book followed by a brief description of their contributions. Refreshment will be served.

In Nevada more than 200 women were interview with several videography teams. These women were recommended by leaders in each rural county, by public service announcements on radio and television and through printed promotions distributed to women’s organizations and the press. A steering committee compiled names, prepared the initial list of interviewees and dates for the interview sessions. The women in this book are a start
The co-editors reflected, “We anticipate that the book will enlighten the readers to the perspectives of women from Nevada’s counties, recognize and respect women of different ethnicities, religions and more.“The women included in this publication are from all different walks of life, from cattle ranching to politics, from community activists to educators, artists and homemakers who made a variety of contributions to Nevada and its diversity. Their mission is providing visibility and support for the gathering and dissemination of history about the roles and contributions of all Nevada women. The committee traveled the state to collect video interviews with women in Nevada. Mona Reno and Patti Bernard of Reno interviewed and videoed those honored in eight of the northern counties, including Elko.
