perhaps the most important benefit is the satisfaction gained from making a real difference in the world. The guiding principles that Rotarians follow include: Is it the truth, Is it fair to all concerned, Will it build good will and better friendships, and will it be beneficial to all concerned. Rotary International has 34,297 clubs around the world with a membership of 1,211,868 adult members. There are an additional 574,954 members in youth clubs around the world. All of these people are working to build better communities and peace. Rotary builds international understanding through scholarships, exchange programs, and humanitarian grants. Throughout the world, Rotary clubs participate in a broad range of educational, intercultural, and humanitarian activities designed to improve the lives of others. Each week in Winnemucca, there is a program designed to keep members informed about what is going on in the community, nation and world. Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers on a variety of topics. Other Rotary projects in Winnemucca include providing a vision screening at each of the district elementary schools to screen children for vision problems that will affect their learning, a project called “Free the Girls” which is a project to help girls and young women forced into the sex slave trade to find a new and self-sustaining life, and a holiday raffle which raises money to eradicate Polio from the world. Polio eradication has been a worldwide Rotary project for more than twenty years and at present there are less than a dozen reported cases world. Rotarians also assist other community groups by participating in the Relay for Life, the Natasha Eden Memorial Try-Athlon, Operation Easter, the BLM Cleanup Day, and the Humboldt Development Authority’s Neighbor to Neighbor cleanup effort.

Rotary meetings are held in the back room at Las Margaritas every Wednesday from noon to 1:00 p.m. and interested community members are always invited to attend. Lemons…

Make some Lemonade and Lemon Bars and Enjoy a beautifully Sweet Day! What better way to enjoy this summer than with the alluring and enlivening fruit of the season…The Lemon! Summer screams sunlight, warmth and time spent outdoors. While this is exciting, it can take its toll on us if we are not adequately prepared. I love to have on hand a refreshing drink to quench my thirst and to serve to my

guests to keep our energies and aliveness up and going. And nothing goes better with this cold glass of lemonade than a flavorful and decadent lemon bar. With a little preparation, these two summer delights, are literally as simple as 1…2…3…!

HOMEMADE LEMONADE 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 3 to 4 cups of cold water

1. Make a simple syrup – using a small saucepan, heat up the 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

2. Juice the lemons, anywhere from 4 to 8 lemons depending on the size.

3. Add the lemon juice, and the simple syrup to a pitcher. Fill the remaining pitcher with the 3 to 4 cups of cold water. Refrigerate.

Taste and adjust the lemonade to your liking by either adding more simple syrup, lemon juice or water should you need to. Serve with ice and garnish with sliced lemons. This recipe serves 6.

Scallops take to the grill with ease. Seared quickly, the slightly crusty, golden outer surface gains a special flavor. The inner sweetness of the scallops is preserved with the result defining the phrase “melts in your mouth.” The pistachio-tarragon butter sauce is a divine pairing of flavors. The delicate flavors of both pistachios and tarragon complement instead of compete with the scallops. The sauce doubled as a basting sauce during grilling. This version of scallops deserves to be enjoyed often this summer.

Tip: Ensure that scallops are dry before grilling or searing. This will reduce steaming and promote searing – the high heat process that creates the desirable, very flavorful, golden brown edges. Scallops are so sweet, meaty, and delicious – when they’re grilled right. A little too long over the flames and they become tough and rubbery. Grill-searing scallops calls for a little trust and bravery on your part. Trust that the scallops will keep on cooking, even though they don’t look done all the way through when you take them off the grill. If the scallops really aren’t done enough, you can always put them back on the grill for 30 seconds or so. But if they’re overcooked, there’s nothing you can do.

Recipe from 25 Essentials – Techniques for Grilling Fish by Karen Adler and Judith Fertig.

Grill-searing outdoors replicates a chef’s technique of searing over high heat indoors. Some gas grills come equipped with a dropin griddle, which is perfect for grill-searing. You’ll get that fabulous contrast of dark sheen on the exterior and pale white scallop inside. You have to pay attention, however. Large sea scallops are usually about 2 inches thick, but you might be grilling sea scallops that are smaller or larger. Once they are darkened on both sides and look almost opaque In the midsections, don’t hesitate – pull them off the grill.

Salmon’s beautiful coral color attracts the eye at the fish counter, but that’s only the beginning of its allure. This recipe demonstrates planking techniques that add another flavor dimension to the final dish. The salmon was covered with a generous amount of the Mustard-Mayo-Dill slather keeping the fish moist during the indirect grilling. The slather melted into the fish and also formed a bit of a tasty crust. We paired the flaky, moist salmon with a cool cucumber, tomato, and feta cheese salad. Planking fish or shellfish is one of the easiest, most foolproof ways to grill seafood. The fish won’t fall through the grill grate, and you don’t have to turn it. This technique is perfect for delicate fillets like freshwater bass and crappie. You can plank almost any fish or shellfish, but for the best outcome, choose varieties that are not more than 1 inch thick, so that you get more flavor from the wood underneath. For maximum flavor, the flesh should touch the wood plank, so purchase skinless fish or skin it yourself. With planking, as with grilling, the thickness of the fish (measured at the thickest part) determines the timing. A 3/4-inch thick fillet will take 25 to 30 minutes using this indirect method. Planking fish adds two flavors: the aromatic wood flavor of the plank (usually cedar or alder for fish) on the bottom of the fish fillet and the flavor of the grill on the top. The slather ensures that you’ll have a moist finished dish.

Recipe from 25 Essentials – Techniques for Grilling Fish by Karen Adler and Judith Fertig.

There are many ways to plank – over direct heat, over indirect heat, or using dual heat. The most common way to plank fish uses an indirect fire, meaning that only one side of the grill is hot. You put a presoaked plank with the food arranged on it over the no heat side, close the lid, and cook.

Positions & Your Health

How do you sleep? Curled up in a ball? On your back? On your stomach? The position in which you sleep is sometimes a major factor in how well you sleep.

Under New Ownership

Lyle Avey Owner

330 W Winnemucca Blvd + (775) 625-4330

We all sleep better on our side or our back. Take snoring for example. Usually, snoring occurs when you sleep on your back. It happens because the soft palate, uvula, tongue, tonsils and/or muscles in the back of your throat rub against each other and vibrate. So, when your spouse yells at you to roll over, this is good advice because you usually don’t snore when you are lying on your side! Raising the head of your bed four inches, by placing a wedge under your mattress, can help too. Recent studies indicate that sleep position may also affect blood pressure. Researchers found that a shift in sleep position from back to stomach actually lowered systolic blood pressure. This may be helpful for a handful of people with cardiovascular issues, however, sleeping on your back or side is much better for your spine, especially your neck. Every new mother is cautioned about her newborn’s sleeping position, with good reason. Babies who fall asleep on their stomachs seem to be at greater risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The American Academy of Pediatrics affirmed this in a statement released in 1992, recommending that all healthy infants be placed on their backs to sleep.

Of course, there are a multitude of options available to customize the home to each buyer’s taste. Frontier Village is no different. House construction began in late fall of 2012 and all Phase 1 infrastructure has been completed as of today. Cooking with Fresh Herbs Contributed by Luc Gerber of Luciano’s

Fresh herbs...who hasn’t shivered and smiled when smelling a bunch of basil, or what calls for summer and dessert better than a handful of mint leaves. Fresh herbs are not only more flavorful than their dry counterparts but, they add color, texture and nutritional benefits to any dish! Most everyone is familiar with green teas, herbal teas and the benefits these plants can bring to us, so I say why stop at drinks? Add these herbs to your favorite salads, rubs, dressings, marinades or pot roasts. Perhaps it is in our heriatage, but to this day if given the choice of trying a natural herbal remedy to clear a cold, sore throat or muscle pain versus a medication, we all tend to start with the natural…it just seems to make sense. With all that being said, what’s the easiest way to incorporate these natural herbs into our everyday meals? Different herbs do tend to have specific flavors and therefore pair more easily to certain drinks or dishes. To be very simplistic:

Basil: usually paired with tomatoes Sage: goes well in stuffings Oregano: well most everyone adds it to a homemade marinara

In 1900, Tom Dufurrena left his Basque home in the Pyrenees as a stowaway on a ship. The ship landed in Mexico. From there, he slowly worked his way through California into Nevada herding sheep. Tom had several brothers who also came to the Denio area. One brother, George, was killed by a cowboy while in sheep camp and is buried in the Denio cemetery. The Pink rock from the quarry in Virgin Valley is his headstone. In 1911, Tom married Grace Uhl. Grace came from Cincinnati to Nevada for health reasons. They lived near Denio where he built a big two-story stone house. The Nevada/Oregon Stateline divides the house. Bill and Ruth Moser now own it. Tom and Grace had three childrenRaymond, Tom and Marge. Tom was born in Winnemucca. Raymond was born in the two story house near Denio, and Marge was born in Cedarville, CA. Marge lives in Denio until this day with her

husband Bill Stephens and is the source of this information. In 1919, Tom bought Kinney Camp, then Thousand Creek from Eberling. Next he bought Virgin from Miller and Lux in the middle twenties; McGee, and later Gooch, both from different owners. The Gooch place was right at the base of Gooch table. The McGee place was located near where the McGee pond and bathhouse is now. Virgin Ranch is about a mile off of highway 140 where the headquarters

Virgin Valley is also known worldwide for its opals. It has some of the most important opal mines of all time. In that time there was an abundance of wildlife. Sagehen, deer, antelope, ducks and geese were very abundant. In 1937 he sold the whole outfit for $100,000 and moved to Kings River Valley

are now. Tom named his outfit Denio Land and Livestock. After a while, he changed it to Thousand Creek Land and Livestock. Miller and Lux were known as the cattle barons of the West. They owned cattle outfits all over California, Nevada, and into Oregon. Their main headquarters was the Quinn River Ranch. The house at the “Home Ranch, which is Virgin Creek, was two stories. It had six bedrooms upstairs and a long hallway. Downstairs was a pantry, kitchen and dining room. There was also a front room and two more bedrooms. The ceilings were eleven feet high. There was also a big barn, a bunkhouse, shed, a chicken house and a shop. The house burnt down but the chicken house, the barn, willow corrals, shop, and a shed are still there. The rock quarry buildings were all built to specific dimensions. Tom built the shop at Virgin out of the rock from the quarry just before he sold out. A German builder built all the other buildings when Eberling and Miller and Lux were in the country. Tom ran about 40,000 head of sheep, and had cows and horses on his spread. From what is now known as pond #20 to McGee pond, was all meadows, lush with native grasses. Thousand Creek and Kinney Camp both raised alfalfa, and they were good

crops. The bathhouse at McGee at that time was actually closer to Virgin Creek. It was twelve by fifteen feet. The house was made of metal, and housed a big potbellied stove. Virgin Valley is also known worldwide for its opals. It has some of the most important opal mines of all time. They include the Roebling Opal, now in the Smithsonian. They were present when Tom was there and people came from all over to be rock hounds. The opal mines weren’t huge at that time. In that time there was an abundance of wildlife. Sagehen, deer, antelope, ducks and geese were very abundant. They were especially numerous at the Home Ranch in the winter where the cows were fed. Raymond Dufurrena remembers several times seeing large groups of antelope in the middle of a band of 1200 sheep. Residents of Virgin Valley would often fish

for Cutthroat trout in Hell Creek and Lower Alkali. Horns of an ibex were found near Thousand Creek also. There were some ibex there at one time, but they eventually died off. In the summertime, crews of twenty-five people hayed the meadows and alfalfa. Horses were used to pull the machines. Loose stacks were put up to feed cows in the winter. The workers included Indians from the Summit Lake Tribe. The Audubon Society came in 1936 and told Tom, “We want this place.” Tom said, “So do I,” so they left. They came again in 1937 and said “We want it; you’re going to sell it.” Tom figured that if someone wanted something that bad they could have it. In 1937 he sold the whole outfit for $100,000 and moved to Kings River Valley where he bought what is now Kings River Ranch.

Civilian Conservation Camp The C.C.C. was a work crew implemented during the depression. C.C.C. stands for Civilian Conservation Corps. All the men were from the state of Missouri. They worked in conjunction with the National Parks Service under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt. Their projects centered mainly on the development and maintenance of the Charles Sheldon Antelope Refuge. One project was to erect a new fence to enclose the refuge. Another project was relocating the telephone line due to the new highways in the area. The C.C.C. built roads in the Sheldon and near Dufurrena Ponds. There were four stages in road construction; the ripper involved using a grader to loosen rocks and dirt, the compressor was drilling and blasting strenuous rocks and ledges. A primitive grader was brought in to smooth out the road. Last, a gravel crew came and graveled the new road. Among roads built were Hill Road, Swan Lake Road, and Hobble Springs Road. Hill Road is in the western area of the Refuge, Swan Lake goes through the middle, and Hobble Springs is a branch off of Swan Lake. At Fish Creek, the C.C.C. built a bridge which was called the Fish Creek Bridge. At Hobble Springs, the crews built a new dam to help with overflow and seepage due to an inadequate old dam. This was 450 feet long, a base of 60 feet, top of 20 feet and it was 10 feet high. This is located in the middle east part of the refuge. At the entrance, near the refuge headquarters is a portal from the U.S.S. Nevada. There is also an Army garage near the headquarters, which

33

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

had four pool tables and Army supplies. There is an overnight cabin located in the southwest corner of the refuge along Swan Lake Road. The Dufurrena Ponds campsite is what was then Camp Sheldon. Camp Sheldon was a tent only camp for the C.C.C. workers.

Recreational activities at the camp included swimming in the pool that they built using rocks from the quarry one and a half miles away. Education at the C.C.C. was one class every week, as well as on the job training every day. A problem still at Dufurrena Ponds is coyotes. Coyotes are damaging antelope herds today at a tremendous rate. According to a C.C.C. report, antelope herds were being damaged at the time of the C.C.C. Dufurrena Ponds is a wonderful natural resource that has been cared for since the early days. The heritage and history of this great place is amazing. Places like these should be shared by all and passed on from generation to generation.

Unplugged! (and loving every minute of it) Contributed by Erin Gerber of Just Travel

Given the prevalence of electronic devices in our daily lives and our somewhat compulsive reliance upon them, taking a true vacation feels almost impossible. Few of us are able to resist the urge to check our messages or texts, so our work places can reach us anywhere. In fact, studies have shown that 83% of adults will check in with the office at least twice a day, while supposedly enjoying their vacation. Given these nonstop demands on our attention, it's no wonder that "unplugged" vacations are gaining popularity. A wide variety of destinations around the world now offer harried parents and tech-obsessed kids a chance to disconnect from their devices and reconnect with each other.

I know what you’re thinking; how could I possibly go on vacation and not be connected to my messages, the latest updates on Facebook, stock earnings, etc? How are my teenagers going to survive a week long family vacation without their cell phone? Easy! As the end of summer vacation nears and the kids are gearing up to go back to school, sports and otherwise busy schedules, now is the time to get away from it all (and I mean away from it all) before the craziness starts back up again. It’s what people are calling a “Digital Detox,” and I think it’s a wonderful idea that some vacation hot spots do not offer easy access or any access at all to connect to the Internet. Following is a list of such places.

Fairmont Kenauk at Le Chateau Montebello, Canada

This property is located along the Outaouais River, half-way between Ottawa and Montreal, and is one of North America's largest and longest-established fishing and game reserves. A stay at this resort guarantees a rustic, but first-class experience. Accommodations include thirteen tucked-away chalets featuring one to six bedrooms. The private cabins are powered by propane, wood and solar energy— many with screened-in porches and all with superb views. Fully equipped cabin kitchens and barbecue grills allow families to prepare their own meals as desired. Local chefs can be retained to prepare a gourmet meal in your own chalet, and arrangements can be made to have your refrigerator stocked prior to your arrival. Guests at this resort will not find cellular service, electricity or television. The Kenauk proudly states, “The only blackberries here grow on bushes."

“Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the one less traveled by.” Robert Frost

Mountain Sky Ranch, Montana

Mountain Sky Guest Ranch is the perfect spot to visit a dude ranch, as well as "relax, rejuvenate and reconnect." The Ranch is nestled in over 8000 acres of gorgeous, rugged Montana countryside and adjacent to Galletin National Forest. Visiting "ranchers" fly into Bozeman and travel about an hour or so south to the resort. Thirty idyllic log cabins await, with one-, two- and three- bedroom options. The cabins date back to 1929 when this authentic working ranch first opened its doors to guests, and regularly refurbished, feature appropriately rough-hewn furnishings, mini fridges, picture windows, porches, and often, fireplaces. Three gourmet meals are included with the room rates and are served both in the dining room and outdoors; coffee and tea service as well as daily deliveries of fresh fruit complete the picture. Without television, telephone and internet service, along with a required seven-night stay, Mountain Sky will surely encourage family conversation, some quiet time for reading and relaxing, and a renewed connection with each other and nature!

The Travaasa Hana, Maui

The Travaasa Hana (formerly known as The Hotel Hana-Maui) is located on the eastern tip of Maui, Hawaii. This somewhat remote hotel is reached by a scenic and serpentine drive along the Hana Highway. The surroundings are a true tropical wilderness with ravines draped in waterfalls and lush rainforests. Overlooking Kaihalulu Bay, the Travassa Hana considers itself to be "Maui's last truly Hawaiian place" and does indeed deliver an authentic Hawaiian experience. Accommodations include 47 rooms, divided between Sea Ranch Cottages and Garden View Suites. An unplugged vacation at Travaasa Hana begins upon arrival at this offthe-beaten path resort. In the rooms, guests will not find: air conditioning, clocks, Wi-Fi, telephones, television or radios. For the unwillingly unplugged, Wi-Fi is available in hotel common areas. But days without the beeping, pinging and ringing of cell phones sounds like heaven! And let’s face it, if we were completely truthful and honest about it, what are we going to miss out on if we’re away from our email, our phones, and our computers? Isn’t it more important to create lasting memories of your vacation with your kids, instead of being buried in your cell phone or lap top? I think so.

Wh e n yo u ' r e cre a ting a we d ding r e g i s t r y, t he re a re a fe w th ing s yo u s h o u l d ke e p in m ind. Take the guess work out of their job by creating a wedding registry that they can refer to for great wedding gift ideas. Here are some simple steps to creating the perfect wedding registry: • Timing is critical. It's definitely acceptable to start a bridal registry shortly after you get engaged. There will be plenty of parties before your wedding day (engagement parties, bridal showers, and maybe even a separate couple's shower), and many of your guests will want to bring you a gift. • Don’t feel obligated to stick only to traditional wedding registry items like crystal or fancy china. Couples today are registering for more specialty items, whether it is a great wall decoration, a colorful set of dishes, or even camping equipment. • Make sure you and your fiancé register together. Since the gifts will be for both of you, you want to make sure that everything from your dinner plates to your bed sheets reflects both of your styles. Think of it as practice for a lifetime of compromise -- you might just be surprised how much you have in common!

• Before you put anything on your registry, figure out what you have between the two of you (that you’re keeping). There’s no need to register for another stand mixer if you already have one you love. But if you want to have matching appliances, consider upgrading. Also, think about what you’re missing. It doesn’t have to be practical or something you use every day. How about a gorgeous wine cabinet? • Keep your guests in mind. Register for items within a wide range of price points, from $20 to several hundred dollars. • Mentioning the registry on your wedding invitations or save-the-dates is definitely considered inappropriate. The best way to get the word out about your registry in a timely manner is to include a small card in your invites directing guests to the store. C.B. Browns offers all this and more! Our wedding registry makes it simple for your friends and family. We offer a large selection of small appliances, colorful Fiesta-ware dish sets and anything you may need to make your new life together simply magical.

With three showroom floors of furniture, appliances, and floor coverings, a complete True Value hardware store, rental shop, appliance repair department, and an electrical and HVAC contracting division, C.B. Brown Company is truly the place in Winnemucca for all your needs!

2013 marks the 120th anniversary of the family owned business serving Humboldt County and surrounding areas. Since 1893 we have taken pride in our great selection of quality merchandise, our in stock inventory, and our customer service and are proud to represent America’s premier brands in all categories. 1038 Grass Valley Road Winnemucca,NV Hours: Tues-Sat11-3 pm & 5-9 pm

This summer I’m turning 43 years old and if you would have asked me four years ago where I’d be four years from then, no way would I believe that this Idaho girl would be where she is today. I had a great job at a college where I myself had just graduated at the top of my class at 39 years old, I had just bought my first house as a single mom in Caldwell, Idaho, and I was doing great!! The time had come to maybe think about getting a “life” again and that’s where Match.com comes in and…. enter Winnemucca, Nevada. Fast forward to August 2010, we make the move to the Mucc to blend families with my future husband Kyle. Our lives suddenly turned to the

49

sushi bar

busiest either of us had ever been. One wedding to plan, renovations started to add a whole upstairs to our house, plans for major landscaping and a few other projects in there, then when things slowed down I start to feel that pull of the independent woman taking hold. I gotta get a job or something because I have never not worked or stayed home to raise babies! The babies aren’t babies anymore so here we go! Yes, Lord knows I was busy enough but I felt that I needed to contribute financially as well as with taking care of the home. The search was on only to find that I was so done with being that regular employee who gave her all to end up being overlooked. I wanted

(775) 623-5700

something more this time. The visions of owning a business and bringing something much needed to the Mucc that it was missing began. I wanted to make a difference and meet new people in this new place I now lived in. I wanted something my kids could be proud they were a part of. I wanted to feel the pride of being a business owner and become involved in the community my kids and I were now part of. The search was on for that perfect thing. Papa Murphy’s? Nah… too much money. Consignment store? Nah… Clothing or home décor? Nah… Didn’t seem to feel right. What did I love? What was the Mucc really missing that everyone seemed to love? Sushi!! The search was on…

One Reno trip in early 2012 brought me face to face with a potential sushi chef in my venture. I laid out my plan and he was interested. Within a month I had found that the previous tenant in my current space was selling out and Lord knows that empty space in this little town is few and far between! This would be my second attempt at trying to get that location. My patience paid off! The campaign for The Crazy Tuna began HARD and fast! I found out who was the contact person, I called, we met, we made an offer and it was DONE! Yeah, it was that fast. Kyle and I started talking to people in the community about our plans and were met with such excitement at the thought of our little mining town having its very own sushi joint!! Now, let the demolition of the old and the building of the new begin! The plans came together flawlessly. Someone I knew recommended JR Builders for the much needed remodel of the restaurant, and I couldn’t have been happier with the results. It needed A LOT of work before we could be what I thought was up to par. From the builders to the electricians to the plumbers and painters, it was something I’ll never forget! I was sad when the job was complete because we had all been part of building something special the Mucc has never had before and we became friends through it all! The coolest last touch to the wall that I just didn’t know what to do with all came together with an idea I had for a mural. The best mural painter in town, Teddy Swecker, came to my rescue! I emailed a picture of what I wanted and she plastered it on in less than 10 hours. The beautiful Cherry Blossom Tree is a topic of many conversations for those who visit us here. Teddy Rocks!! I had everyone hired and was within days of opening when I had realized the chef I thought was going to be my guy wasn’t going to work out due to creative differences. WOW! I was truly a “restaurant in search of a chef” at this point. By sheer luck, my husband had spoken to a chef from Elko we had known who unbeknownst to us, was looking for a change. I had the business card and I called him. “PLEASE PLEASE FERNANDO, HELP ME!!!” I told him my story and within three days he had made arrangements to come and talk with me and see what the place looked like. I already had my menus done, the place was more than ready to open and I had already ordered over $7,000 worth of fish and no idea what to do at this point. Fernando was IN and I was a happy girl! We delayed our opening twice due to these extra issues but spent the next few weeks training and perfecting the place and opened for a private “Contractor night” August 16th, 2012. We were a hit.

We hope to see you bellied up to our bar soon!

I’ve been asked several times how I got the name The Crazy Tuna. There was a roll in this one sushi place I liked and it was called The Angry Tuna. For the life of me I couldn’t get it right! I kept calling that roll ‘The Crazy Tuna’ and got corrected every time by my family. This was way before I even thought about opening my own place. As my plan came together for our own place I woke one night and “The Crazy Tuna” kept ringing in my head… BOOM! That was it! "The Crazy Tuna has been such a wonderful addition to this growing little town. I honestly can say that with all of the travelling my family and I do, we make it a point to try sushi everywhere we go. Every time, we come back home looking forward to having the BEST sushi this side of Frisco Bay in our own restaurant!! I believe that when I refuse to scrimp on the quality of my fish that it shows in how fresh everything tastes. We get many 'pleasantly surprised' compliments daily for how good our food is... they always have to ask though, "how do you get it fresh here in the desert?" I answer, "High quality sushi grade fish from Sysco twice a week, that's how."

51

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

We aren't only "famous" for our raw sushi anymore since we also offer a wide variety of cooked rolls AND other fully cooked Asian Fusion dishes. We have to appeal to many to make it in this little town filled with miners, ranchers and everything in between who may think raw fish "ain't natural to eat." We feel that we have something for everyone!! We have All-You-Can-Eat or Alacarte and more excellent appetizers than any place I've ever been! We serve three different Asian beers and three domestics along with 6 different types of Sake served hot or cold. Our awesome chefs all add their own flare to their rolls and have built a strong fan base which allow The Crazy Tuna to be even more versatile on many levels. I am so incredibly proud of my staff from the cook, to the chefs, the dishwashers and waitstaff... they all make me look GOOD!! We look forward to heading into our first full summer here in the Mucc and turning more "newbies" into sushi lovers! Come get your sushi coma on!!

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

Senior Citizens of Humboldt County, Inc. Senior Citizens of Humboldt County, Inc. was incorporated in 1974. They are a not for profit organization, in which their mission is to enhance the quality of life for those 60 years and above and all those with disabilities, (regardless of age). As they continued to grow, they expanded and built the current location (Pleasant Senior Center) with CDBG funding in 1983. Pleasant Senior Center offers several programs to help everyone. They are funded in part by the Aging and Disability Services Division of the Department of Health and Human Services. Currently, they offer:

• 2 Nutrition Programs: Congregate Meals (served in the dining room) and Homebound Delivered Meals • Elderly and Disabled Transportation (The only public transport system in the county!) • Elder Advocacy programs, Legal Assistance and Medicare/ Medicaid Assistance • Bingo and Card games • Resistance Training and Health Programs

54

Over the years, Humboldt County has seen an increase in the population for those 60 years and older. They enjoy spending a few hours at the Pleasant Center each day. Since 1983, no additions or renovations to the building have been made. In the 1980’s, the Senior Center provided roughly 20 homebound meals and 40 Dining Room meals each day. Now, they serve 70 homebound meals and over 105 Dining Room guests each day. You don’t have to be a math expert to know that demand has increased!

The current kitchen, bathrooms and general facility is too small to accommodate current and future demands. Per Nevada State Demographer, Humboldt County population will grow 48.7% between 2010-2030. The aging of the Baby Boomers is their concern as the nation’s percentage of people over the age of 60 keeps rising.

The Pleasant Center is proposing an expansion that will take place in 3 different phases over the next few years.

55

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

Phase I of the Pleasant Senior Center remodel will be an expanded kitchen. The preparation and serving areas will increase. Two additional ovens and a larger hot food serving area will be installed. The Department of Aging is mandating a larger dishwasher and clean up area. Dry Storage will be expanded, and several pieces of essential equipment will be replaced. Also during this construction period, the buildings overall utilities, such as fire suppression systems, plumbing, electrical, waste water removal and HVAC will be updated. A trash enclosure and indoor parking area for our home delivered meals trucks will be an addition to the outside.

Phase II calls for a larger dining room, more toilet facilities and meeting space. The plans include an additional 2,688 Square Feet of dining room, meeting area, storage and restrooms to the already existing space. Also during this phase, a 2,300 square foot Porte Cochere will be added to the rear of the building and will double as a daytime drop off area for seniors, and a night time transport service bus shelter to protect against the weather and any possible vandalism to the vehicles.

Phase III is an expansion of the current front entrance area. This space will be used for resistance training, public meeting areas and additional restrooms.

Without this expansion, they may need to begin denying services. In many cases, the Senior Lunch (whether home bound or in the dining room) is the only meal these people receive. Adequate nutrition is important for our physical, emotional and mental well-being.

The total expansion costs have been estimated at roughly $900,000. Phase I will be the first and most expensive part of this proposed project due to the necessary upgrades to the buildings kitchen and utilities. They have applied for a Community Development Block Grant through the City of Winnemucca, and received a recommendation for funding in the amount of $265,813.36. Thanks in part to fund-raising efforts and generous donations from the community, the have raised $44,567.77.

The Board of Trustees also was able to save and pitch in an additional $35,000 leaving a total of $5,432.23 still needed of the original amount. Patricia Tindall, the Center Director, is currently writing additional grants to Union Pacific Railroad and Aging Services, hopefully making up the additional $40,000 needed that they were not able to get from the Community Development Block Grant.

The ultimate goal of the Pleasant Senior Center is to have a kitchen that will be able to cater for up to 400 meals per day. This includes both homebound and dining room meals.

During the summer, the Center will hold Ice Cream Socials! It’s a great way for everyone to help with their fundraising efforts and enjoy some delicious ice cream!

If you have any questions or are able to help with the efforts, please contact the Pleasant Senior Center during normal business hours. They are located at 1480 Lay Street and their phone is 623-6211. JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

NO MORE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. Violence against women is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior, and thus is part of a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence results in physical injury, psychological trauma, and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime.

In Nevada, 9,022 reports of domestic violence were made in 2007, 60% of which were made by women. Nevada has been ranked as the number 1 state for domestic violence related homicides in 5 of the last 6 years and our state is 4th in the nation for sexual assault crimes. Domestic violence is a community issue. It is affecting each of our towns. It crosses age groups, ethnicities, and socioeconomic lines. It could be affecting your sister, your cousin, your daughter, your friend. In Northern Nevada, the troubles of domestic violence are compounded by our geographic isolation. Housing is difficult to secure, financial assistance is limited, and social service agencies aren’t always accessible. Survivors of sexual violence have even more barriers to overcome with medical services being located more than 166 miles from their home. Together we must respond to this growing epidemic and say no more.

Visit WDVS at www.winnemuccadvs.org or visit Scrap Domestic Violence at www.scrapdv.org to learn more or for a list of providers in Nevada. 57

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

How do you respond to domestic violence? Know the signs. Abusers will commonly try and control as many aspects of a victim’s life as possible. These controlling behaviors may isolate an individual from friends and family, limit their access to household finances, or restrict them from working. Someone you know may be being abused if they have unexplained bruises, need permission to speak with you, or frequently refers to their partner’s temper. Help a victim. Remind them it is not their fault. No one deserves to be treated poorly and nothing they do makes them deserving of their circumstances. Create a safety plan with someone living in an abusive home. Help them decide who they should tell, locate the safest places in their home, and plan for an emergency escape. Provide them numbers of local domestic violence agencies and remind them you’re there to help. Help an abuser. Let them know their choices are hurting people. They are in control of their behavior, the behavior isn’t funny, and it’s not okay. Give them information about people to speak to because the abuse is their fault.

Who can help? You. Provide a victim with hotline and crisis numbers. Support them through their decisions. Be their friend. Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services (WDVS) can help. In Humboldt County, Winnemucca Domestic Violence Services provides advocacy and assistance to survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence and their children. We can provide safe shelter for an individual fleeing their home, assistance with food, transportation, and planning for sustainability. We advocate for survivors throughout the community, accompanying individuals to court, medical appointments, and assisting with housing.

Help a child. Remind a child living in an abusive environment that it’s not their fault. Plan for safety with them, brainstorm safe places to go when violence begins. Teach children how to call 911. Practice calling for help, saying their name and address clearly so law enforcement officers can find them. Give it a name. It’s domestic violence. It’s not just abuse, loud yelling or strange relationship. It’s domestic violence. Know the signs and help someone in need.

June 22nd “Haulin’ to Carlin!”

Summer is quickly approaching, which means it will soon be time for Winnemucca’s annual Relay for Life Event. My name is Josh Upton and this will be my sixth year participating in our local Relay for Life with my family. I am a member of Team Newmont and in addition to team fundraising events; each team member also sets a personal fundraising goal and raises money individually in advance of the event. As a way to help my team’s effort and meet my individual goal, I decided to turn an activity that I love into a way to earn donations for this deserving cause. Last year, I created a Facebook event and told friends that I was going to ride from Winnemucca to Battle Mountain by bicycle and asked them to sponsor my ride by making donations to my personal fundraising effort. I called it “Battle Mountain or Bust” and I received an overwhelming response and support. I completed the 53 mile trek and far surpassed my personal goal; raising over $500 for cancer research, patient support, and prevention and awareness campaigns. The most gratifying moment of the whole endeavor, and the one that left the most permanent memory, occurred as I was dismounting my bike in Battle Mountain. I was wearing a “home-made” purple jersey (purple is the main color of Relay) with the words “Riding for the Cure” spelled out in iron-on letters across the back. A woman, a complete stranger who was across the road from where I ended the ride, 59

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

noticed the back of my jersey and called out, “thank you!” That thank you from a stranger, along with the outpouring of support I received from my friends and family, inspired me to not only do it again, but to make it bigger. This year, on June 22nd, the ride will begin in Winnemucca and cover 103 miles east along I-80, climbing over Golconda Summit and Emigrant Pass for a total ascent of 3,654 feet, and end in Carlin. I’m calling it “Haulin’ to Carlin!”. Last year I posted updates and photos through the Facebook event as the ride progressed. This year I have created a new Facebook page – www.facebook. com/ridingforthecure - which contains a link to my personal fundraising page and where I will again post live updates and photos from the trip. If anyone is interested in supporting the effort, please feel free to visit the Riding for the Cure Facebook page. You can also go to www. winnemuccarelay.org to learn more about the Winnemucca Relay for Life event and sign up to participate.

Thanks, and watch for bicycles on the road!

Toxic Bodies?

Does the repeated use of deodorant expose you to hazardous chemicals? Find out!

Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic

If you’re like many women – you wouldn’t even think of leaving your house without your “face” on - meaning skin lotions, cosmetics and anything else you might use to enhance your natural beauty. Are these products safe? According to some research, not only are cosmetics potentially toxic, but so are hair products, deodorants, and perfumes. In her book, Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry, Stacy Malkan reveals the extent of toxic chemicals in personal care products that millions use every day – chemicals that often don’t appear on any ingredient listing for the products. The result of our use of chemicals in our culture produces some disturbing findings:

• I n 2004, scientists discovered pesticides in the blood of newborns • In 2005, researchers found perchlorate, a substance used in rocket fuel, in human breast milk

61

JUNE 2013 | everythingwinnemucca.com

• Many people are testing positive for flame retardants, phthalates (oil-based softening agents and preservatives that can affect hormone function and have been linked to birth defects) and lead (contained in lipsticks) • In 2004, English researchers identified parabens in breast tumor samples. Parabens are found in the vast majority of deodorants, body sprays and skin creams. Because they are absorbed into the body, they are believed to produce an increased risk and incidence of breast cancer Health and beauty product manufacturers will argue that there are only small amounts of toxic chemicals in their products. This may be true if they were used once, but day after day, over time, is quite a different story. And some countries don’t even require manufacturers of these products to list the ingredients!

There are alternatives. Many people have stopped using a lot of personal care products. As with food, only those labeled, “certified organic,” can be considered safe to use. There is an online database that you can access to determine the toxicity of many of these products. You can also email or call manufacturers who don’t list their product ingredients and ask them for a list. There is a lot of money generated from the sale of these products, and a lot to be lost by those who use them without knowing the toxins they may contain.

Contributed by Sharon Hartman & Sara Filippe (owners of Encore Dance Academy) On June 5th and 6th at 7:00 pm, Encore Dance Academy will hold their annual spring recital at the Winnemucca Convention Center. Students will be performing styles in Creative Movement, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Theatre Dance, Hip Hop and Contemporary. All dances are original pieces choreographed by the instructors: Sharon Hartman, Sara Filippe and Jayna Hill. Dancers range in age from the youngest at 3 years old to the oldest at age 19. Encore Dance Academy was formed in 2007 by owners Sharon Hartman and Sara Filippe. They place a strong emphasis on teaching the correct technique for each style of dance and believe the Spring Recital is the students reward for 9 months (September – May) of focused study. Choreography for the recital usually begins in January with the goal of finishing in March so they can once again focus on technique and the art of performing.

This year’s recital will include 34 numbers in all styles of dance. All 120+ Encore dancers are ready to put on what they believe is “the best show in town”! The students have worked extremely hard, sometimes 5-6 nights a week in order to show their friends, family and the community what they have learned. Again, the Spring Recital is June 5 & 6 at 7pm at the Winnemucca Convention Center. Tickets are $10.00 per person and will be available at the door starting at 6pm each night. I know from my own dance lessons that it is taxing and exhausting to get to the point where your dancing is actually enjoyable, to arrive at a place where the mind no longer has to concentrate on when to releve’, when to do the pas de deux. It takes years of practice for the limbs to develop an internal memory. But when they do, when the body takes over, it feels like freedom, like “dancing” instead of just dancing.

Spring Recital June 5 & 6 at 7pm 65

Join us this summer for the Humboldt County Library’s Reading Program.

When school lets out and the vast possibilities for the summer stretches out before you, consider what we at the Library can do for you. Sure we love books, and we live to connect people to the stories and information they seek, but we also love crafting and listening to guest speakers and movie nights! For the past 14 years we have held our Summer Reading Program during the lull between school enrollments. It is packed full of extra programs and activities, with the added bonus of awarding our reading participants with all sorts of cool prizes; 2013 is the year we ‘Dig into Reading.’ The reading program is an independently tracked program for children ages 2 years old through graduating High School Seniors. The participants keep a record of how many books and minutes they read until reaching their age designated goal. When the child’s goal is reached, they qualify for a grab bag prize and are automatically entered into the drawing for the grand prize at the end of the program. There is no limit to the number of reading logs a reader may turn in, however, they will be limited to three grab bag prizes per week. We encourage individuals to strive for our top reader prize by completing as many reading logs as possible.

A ďż˝ Baseball Wreath Summer is just around the corner and for some of you out there it means Baseball season. I found this super cute baseball wreath on pinterest and thought I would give it a whirl. All you need is a wire hanger, 15 baseballs ( I used old beat up ones because I felt it gave it a vintage flare, but new baseballs would look great too), a drill, and some ribbon. Drill holes through baseballs and and feed wire through, tie the hanger together and add your ribbon. I gave this project an A because it really doesn't get any easier than this.

B Teacher Gift Don't forget about those teachers on the last day of school. This pinterest project was also very simple. Just grab some crayons at the dollar store and wrap (hot glue) it around "anything", like a vase, an oatmeal canister, a can, etc… if the height of your item is too tall just wrap some ribbon around the excess to make up for that extra space. Then fill with candy, pencils, lotion, or even a plant. This project gets a B only because you may have a spot where a crayon won't fit just right due to the circumference of your canister, and therefore you might have to place it somewhere where that "spot" can be hidden.

A+++ Classmate Gift SCHOOL’S OUT, Yay!!!!!!!! An adorable way to say “enjoy your summer” to classmates is to put together these fantastic goodie bags. I found the the free printable on pinterest and then filled baggies with some smarties candies and a packet of Kool-Aid. Project grade is an A+++ because the printable is FREE and Kool-Aid packs and a bag of smarties are super affordable as well.

Happy Crafting!!!

The doctor of chiropractic, through a procedure called an adjustment, helps restore misaligned vertebrae to a more normal position, thus allowing the nerves to properly communicate with the rest of the body and let the body heal itself – safely and naturally. This gentle touch can realign your child’s spine and free his or her nervous system to function as it should, alleviating any cause of distress.

tired because they have a whiney cry and rub their eyes. They know when they are hungry because they cry the same way at regular intervals and suck on their fingers. They know that they are in pain because they scream and kick their feet or draw their legs up and punch the air with their fists. But, if your infant is in pain, and your pediatrician can’t pinpoint a cause, a visit to the chiropractor may help soothe whatever ails your precious newborn. Chiropractic care for infants and toddlers? Yes, of course, and the earlier the better. Did you know your child’s spine grows almost 50% in length during the

What kind of symptoms can kids have? Infants, toddlers and kids can develop symptoms from life’s traumas. Some very common symptoms and conditions seen in the Chiropractic office include colic, chronic earaches, scoliosis, neck pain, headaches, sleep disorders, asthma and allergy symptoms and patterns of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

first year. Pretty significant, that’s equivalent to a 6 foot adult growing to 9 feet in a year! Talk about growing pains!

Why should I take my kid to see the Chiropractor? Consider the stress that falls on our kids. A fall from a bed, a sudden stop in an automobile, or any significant unsupported movement of the head and neck in an infant or toddler. A sports injury, a loaded backpack or an unsupported bed. All can induce pain and other symptoms. Even birth trauma has been a significant area of study especially when delivery aides (ie. forceps or vacuum distraction) are used. As kids learn to walk, run and eventually merge into sports and other physical activities the demands on their bodies can leave joint pain, muscle aches and more. Balancing the stress that our small ones put on their bodies can help ensure a comfortable, natural and healthy growth process. Chiropractic care for kids is the second most common form of complementary medicine. Second to nutrition such as fish oils and herbs.1

How safe is Chiropractic care for kids? Chiropractic is one of the safest forms of children’s health care. A chiropractor does not adjust a baby or a child the same way as he or she adjusts an adult. A baby’s spine is very supple during the first few months of life, so the doctor of chiropractic applies only a slight pressure (as light as the touch you use to test the firmness of a tomato) to make an adjustment. For older children whose spine is still made of mainly cartilage, slight pressure followed by a gentle push is all that is required to put the vertebra back in place. Bring your child to a Chiropractor for an examination and evaluation and discover how Chiropractic care can help.

As many of the nation’s consumers consider switching banks, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) and Nevada Bank and Trust are reminding them that now is the perfect time to join the “go local” movement by banking locally with their local community bank. By doing so, consumers will realize the litany of benefits that come with banking with a community bank, including a

relationship-based banking experience, superior customer service and the pride that comes with reinvesting in one’s community. By going local and banking locally with your community bank, consumers can make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors and the future of their community; they’ll be making a hometown investment they can be proud of. After all, the money they deposit in their community bank will be reinvested in ways that drive their local economy, such as in the form of loans to local residents who want to buy a home or to small business owners who are looking to open shop on Main Street. As small businesses themselves, community banks only thrive when their customers and communities do the same, so taking care of their customers and looking out for the best interest of their community is ingrained in the way they conduct their business each and every day. And when consumers call their local community bank, they’ll be reassured to know that they won’t be talking to someone halfway across the globe. Instead, they will be talking with their community banker who lives and works in the same community they do. Whether located in small towns, suburbia or big-city neighborhoods, community banks improve America’s communities by funding nearly 60 percent of all small businesses under $1 million and by using local dollars to help families purchase homes, buy a car, finance college and build financial security. By driving local economies and creating local jobs, community banks are an integral part of our financial system and play a key role in our nation’s economic recovery. Of the more than 7,000 community banks across the country, nearly 5,000 are ICBA members. Representing more than 23,000 locations nationwide and employing more than 280,000 Americans, ICBA members hold more than $1 trillion in assets, $900 billion in deposits, and $700 billion in loans to consumers, small businesses and the agricultural community. ICBA and Nevada Bank and Trust want all Americans to know that their community bank is not only invested in their hometown, but also in them, as customers. Our doors are open, and we welcome consumers to go local and see the community bank difference for themselves. Nevada Bank and Trust is your local community bank here in the Elko area. NB&T took no TARP funds and is rated a 5 star institution in safety and soundness by Bauer Financial. This separates us from most every other bank in the area. Nevada Bank and Trust is a member of FDIC and an Equal Housing Lender. To find your local community bank, visit ICBA’s community bank locator at www.icba.org/locate. Simply type in your Zip code and the app will show you all the community banks in your area. You can even download free ICBA locator apps for your iPhone, Android or Blackberry.
