In the pantheon of nearly perfect foods, eggs are at the top of the list! Loaded with nutrition, inexpensive, low in calories, and quick to fix, eggs are an extraordinary food source. Uniquely packaged, eggs are a staple in everyone's refrigerator. In this issue we entertain you with some fast facts about eggs, explain how to make the perfect omelet, and describe a few other favorites. We finish with some scrumptious recipes that will have you rediscovering this eggs-traordinary ingredient!

Eggs
A laying hen will lay an egg every 25-30 hours. The formation of an egg occurs on a two-foot long track beginning with the yolk. The egg white forms around the yolk as a protective barrier, and as a last step, a shell is formed around both the yolk and white. A hen requires 12 hours of light to be in a laying mood. A rooster is not necessary for egg production, only for the production of chicks.
Eggs have “staying power” – it takes the body about four hours to digest eggs because of the fat and protein complements. Egg whites cook faster than egg yolks, egg whites begin to set at 145 degrees F while egg yolks begins to transform at 150 degrees F. Cooks eggs over low heat generally works the best for uniform results. Eggs are considered to be safely cooked at 160 degrees F. Keep your hard-boiled eggs separate from fresh eggs in the refrigerator by placing a drop of food coloring in the boiling water; your eggs will be color-coded for eating. Alternatively, spin an egg to determine if it is hard -boiled or raw; a hard-boiled egg will spin evenly, while a raw egg will spin with a wobble. Egg whites will not whip well if there is any trace of fat present. For beaten egg whites, make sure that no speck of yolk is present and that both the beaters and bowl are grease-free.

An egg yolk is 50% water, 34% fat, and 16% protein, while the egg white is 90% water and 10% protein. The yolk contains most of an egg’s cholesterol and 75% of its calories in addition to vitamin A, Thiamine, and Iron. The egg white contains more than half of the egg’s total protein. Chalazae (ka-LAY-zee) are the opaque, white stringy things present in an egg white. They help to hold the yolks suspended inside the egg. The chalaza does not require removal. The fresher the egg, the more prominent the chalaza may appear. Eggs on the market are commonly available in four sizes: Medium, Large, Extra-Large, and Jumbo. The difference in volume between the eggs can make a difference in some recipes. Use the size of egg prescribed in the recipe, or adjust accordingly in sensitive situation.

Eggs-cellent Omelets For breakfast, lunch, or dinner, an omelet is a great choice. French in origin, an omelet is not nearly as difficult as some might like it to appear. The secret to a great omelet is a great nonstick pan. An egg's proteins coagulate at low temperatures, and are famous for making a pan difficult to clean. A good nonstick pan alleviates many of the problems with cooking eggs whether scrambled, fried, or as with an omelet.
The Classic Rolled Omelet

Step 1
Beat 2 eggs with 1-2 Tbsp of milk, (or water), in a bowl with a fork or wire whisk until evenly blended. Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper. For best results, begin with room temperature eggs by allowing the eggs to set for 30 minutes after removing them from the refrigerator.

Step 2
Heat an 8-inch, nonstick skillet or sauté pan with sloped sides on medium heat. Add 1-2 tsps of butter to the heated pan. Tip and roll the pan around allowing the melted butter to coat the pan’s surface.

Step 3
Pour the egg mixture into the pan. With a nonstick spatula, push on the sides of the cooking egg encouraging the liquid portion to flow into the void. Continue this motion working around the pan until no more liquid flows. Gently keep loosening the omelet from the pan along the way so that it slips around the pan easily.

Step 4
Allow the omelet to finish cooking undisturbed. Omelet fillings may be added as the “stripe” down the middle of the pan. For proper folding or rolling, avoid overfilling the omelet. Keep the omelet loose in the pan with a couple shakes of the pan.

Step 5
Tip the pan forward and flip one-third of the omelet back on itself. Slide the omelet onto the plate with the folded edge first. With a tip of the pan, allow the remaining third to overlap on the folded portion of the omelet.

Fluffy Omelets Separate the eggs and beat the whites until soft peaks are formed. Carefully fold in beaten yolks and pour the entire mixture into a heated pan. As the eggs cook, the air bubbles will be captured, and an airy omelet created.
Egg White Omelets These omelets use just the white of the egg and are often preferred for those desiring lower calories or lower fat intake. The egg whites may be frothed, (not beaten, however), prior to adding to the heated pan. The addition of herbs, tomatoes, or onion provides good flavor enhancements.

Frittatas and Tortillas Cousins to the omelet, an Italian frittata, or a Spanish tortilla (see featured recipe below) are similar egg dishes where additions, (vegetables, meat, herbs, or your choice) are added to the egg mixture prior to cooking. The result is a thick, pancake-like egg dish that is flipped halfway during cooking. The "pie" is cut into wedges and served. Two nonstick pans work well for inverting the frittata and finishing the cooking. Use a 10-12-inch heavy-bottomed skillet.

Quiche A great quiche has a creamy, custard filling encased in a tender flaky crust. Eggs are combined with milk and/or cream to form a custard-like mixture. Additional ingredients - limited only by the imagination - are added to the mixture or placed in a waiting pie shell. To prevent a soggy crust, partially prebake the shell. Use a removable bottom quiche pan or flan pan for easy presentation. Alternatively, a deep-dish pie dish will perform well for delicious quiches.

Q: Some eggs tout extra Omega-3 and Omega 6 compounds, how are these eggs different? A:
Chickens fed flax seed produce eggs with greater quantities of Omega-3 and Omega-6 compounds, essential fatty acids. Flax is high in these compounds and transfer to the egg through the chicken's feed. Omega compounds are thought to have health benefits in triglyceride and cholesterol management.

Q: What is the best way to store eggs? A: Eggs may be kept at room temperature for a few days, but degrade quickly. Refrigeration extends the shelf life of an egg greatly. The ideal storage temperature for eggs is 40F. Avoid storing eggs in the door of the refrigerator, which is typically warmer than the central compartments. Store eggs in their original cardboard carton; it helps to maintain a higher humidity environment while reducing odor absorption.
Q: My omelets are not turning out - what's wrong? A: There are some common issues that arise when making omelets.

Here are some troubleshooting tips: (1) If the bottom is browning, but the top is still wet: use a lower heat setting that allows for more even cooking. (2) If the omelet can't be folded, there may be too many eggs for the size of pan. For an 8-inch pan, use a maximum of 3 eggs; for a 10-inch pan, use a maximum of 5 eggs. Also use a modest portion of filling for good folding. (3) If the omelet is sticking to the pan, use a good quality nonstick pan. After a long season of cold and snow, it’s time to turn your winter blahs into springtime aahs. We’ve got just the cure with six fresh tips for bringing the beauty of the season inside.

Flowers from the grocery store are an easy and inexpensive way to bring a fresh dose of spring indoors. Divide a large bouquet into several small vases to brighten every room in the house. Or group several flowers in different shades of the same color to create one bold arrangement. For the freshest flowers, ask a clerk when they receive deliveries and shop on that day. Look for flowers with firm stems and slightly opened buds, and avoid ones with slimy stems, discolored leaves and wilting petals.
For inexpensive, spring-inspired artwork, look for a nature book filled with full-page illustrations of everything from exotic mushrooms to butterfly species to flowers. Carefully cut the pages from the book, frame them and hang. For added value interest and a more organic feel, stagger the frames on the wall like a collage. This event is intended to celebrate women. Happy Spring to everyone…Now, since the majority of the readers of this great publication, Everything Winnemucca are on the west side of the United States, I think we should look into departures from the West Coast. For us here in Winnemucca and surrounding areas the West is Best. After all, the closest international airport is 165 miles west of Winnemucca. So let’s head west for your next vacation. Let’s start out in San Diego, California. Here there are cruise lines running out of San Diego starting with short 3-night cruises up to 45-night cruises - amazing. The nice thing about taking a cruise off the West Coast is the ease of getting there from remote areas like Winnemucca. Our journey begins when we leave from Winnemucca with the 2-1/2 to 3 hour drive to the Reno Airport for that flight. If you do not wish to take a week long cruise or you would like to make it a combination vacation, that can be arranged as well. After all, when you use
a travel service, planning a fantastic vacation gets a whole lot easier. You may want the best of both worlds, like a little land and a little sea. No problem, San Diego has a fit for any traveler. You can plan a nice stay at one of San Diego’s many fine hotels, add a trip to the world famous San Diego Zoo or maybe a day at SeaWorld – and why not add a 3-night cruise too. How can you top that? And don’t forget the many missions that you can visit while in the area. Now that's what I call thinking out of the box, a trip for everyone in the family. San Diego has so much to offer the traveler - you could spend the day at one San Diego's many beaches, or rent a car for the day and take San Diego's 59-mile scenic drive. In addition, there are some very awesome things to do and see all over the San Diego area. I will run a few more by you. Why not check out Harbor Island, Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument, Ocean Beach, Mission Bay Aquatic Park, Birch Aquarium at Scripps and Salk Institute, Balboa Park and much, much more. Now that we have covered San Diego, let's move up the coast of California to the beautiful city of Long Beach. The City of Long Beach is on the southern end of Los Angeles County.
It is a beautiful city on the Pacific Coast and home to the RMS Queen Mary, an awesome vessel to visit. Again, as with San Diego, there is plenty to do in the Long Beach area, and is also home to The Aquarium of the Pacific. If you plan to take a cruise or just visit the Long Beach area, The Aquarium of the Pacific is a must see. One of the exhibits is a three-story Blue Cavern tank and has something to see for everyone. Now about the cruise line that calls Long Beach home - Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival Cruise Line offers cruise vacations from 2 to 23 days departing from the Port of Long Beach. You can choose a 2-day sampler or a longer cruise vacation if you like, to Mexico. There are many combinations when it comes to planning a great vacation. Just Right Cruises land and sea vacations always puts you first. So always check with a travel advisor for the best advice. Ok, enough of the sales pitch let's get back to talking about ports and beautiful places to visit! Temperatures in the Long Beach area are mild for the most part, with average lows of 45-65f and average highs of 67-83F depending on the time of year you visit. Other things to do in Long Beach - The El Dorado Park Nature Center is a unique place to visit, they have a nature trail that is second to none and offers an easy family-friendly walk of 1.8 miles. You will see beautiful vistas by the lake walking towards the trailhead plus a wild mulberry field filled with wildlife. This nature center is a great place to unwind.

There are a number of museums such as the Museum of Latin American Art and the Long Beach Museum of Art. You can visit the beaches and take up windsurfing or sailing. For a real thrill, you can also take a helicopter tour offered from the Long Beach Airport, which offer tours that fly over Hollywood and much, much more. Now it’s time to move a little farther North up the coast to the port area of Los Angles, California. The Port of
Los Angles is located in San Pedro, which is a part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. This port is a busy port for all types of shipping and of course, cruise lines. This is an awesome location for the cruise lines because it is easy to get to. First the Los Angeles International Airport is one of America's major International Airports and is easy to fly in and out of. When it comes to variety, the Port of Los Angeles has a lot to offer. There are eleven cruise lines that port at the Los Angeles Cruise Center, plus there are cruises departing Los Angeles for ports-of-call around the world. Some of the most popular destinations are the Mexican Rivera, Hawaii, and Alaska. The city of Los Angeles has so much to offer the traveler that I will only be able scratch the surface. Now, in addition to having a great airport and Cruise Center they are a short distance from a world famous attraction known as Walt Disney’s Disneyland in Anaheim. Mr. Walter Elias “Walt” Disney bought a 160-acre site in 1953 and began construction in 1954. Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955 and is the second most visited park today. Just across from Disneyland’s maingate you will find California Adventure, Disneyland's sister park. You can find other well-noted attractions in the greater Los Angeles area. If amusement parks are your thing, this area is home to just a few (lol). You will find Knott's Berry Farm, and oddly enough it was also built on a 160-acre piece of land just like Disneyland. Plus other fun-filled attractions like
Los Angeles boasts over 360 things to do when you visit the Los Angeles area. So back to thinking out of the box, you can do a combination vacation and your travel advisor can help you put a package together that fits your time and budget. Now we are heading 382 miles north of Los Angele to one of the most famous places on earth, San Francisco. We are going right to the Port of San Francisco which was born out of the California Gold Rush of 1849 and has been called one of the three great natural harbors in the world. One of the most famous spots at the San Francisco Port/Pier is the Embarcadero and San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf at Pier 39. The Port of San Francisco has visits from many cruise lines. Most cruises departing San Francisco head south to the Mexican Rivera and North to Alaska, and even to Hawaii. There are cruises to other areas but you will need to contact your travel agent for more information. The San Francisco Port is a working port with many things going on and tourism is one of them. It is a very cool place and is a must visit. Now that you are in San Francisco there is no shortage of things to do or see. How about a visit to the "The Rock," on Alcatraz Island. Here you will stand in the prison cells of notorious criminals like Al Capone. Alcatraz Island is easy to get to from Pier 33 by ferry. The ferry does sell out quickly, so be sure to plan your trip in advance.
How about a ride on a cable car or on the F line historic streetcar. Go to Ghirardelli Square - Ghirardelli is the secondoldest chocolate company in the United States. Check out the Oakland Hills area and tour the Chabot Space & Science Center, or maybe one or more of the many museums like the California Academy of Sciences, the Exploratorium, San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art or the Asian Art Museum, just to name a few. You can also take a drive to the world famous wine country of Napa Valley, or take a guided tour to this area from San Francisco. Many of these tours are self-guided and can be done on your own, but guided tours are also available. Your travel agent can help you arrange your stay and tour. You will certainly enjoy yourself when you plan a cruise or vacation in San Francisco.
We are now ready to go to our final West Coast port farther north – just a little over 800 hundred miles from our last port of San Francisco to Seattle, Washington.

the world-famous movie studio and theme park, Universal Studios featuring movie studios, tours, attractions, rides. Not too far north in Santa Clarita, you can get your thrills at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Magic Mountain is a great place and has some crazy rides; however, a number of the attractions have height requirements. So if you are traveling with smaller children be sure to check that out in advance.
The port of Seattle offers two downtown cruise terminals, and convenient air travel connections makes Seattle the preferred choice for Alaska or Pacific Northwest cruises. And as with the other port cities we have visited, Seattle is an awesome place with a ton of great things to see and do. You can choose to fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, also known as Sea-Tac. You can arrive the same day and go right to your cruise line, or maybe hang out in Seattle for a few days before or after your cruise. After all, there are some must see places in Seattle. We will start out by going to the Space Needle and once again we are talking about a world famous spot on earth! If you stay in Seattle you must put the Space Needle on your bucket list of things to do. Skycity Restaurant is all I have to say. Dining here is a once, ok maybe twice, in a lifetime event. For the 360° rotating panorama view, you must make reservations for this awesome place to visit. You can make reservations for the Space Needle Skycity Restaurant up to 90-days in advance. When dining at the Skycity Restaurant your trip up to the 580-foot observation deck is included. Now for a little history about the Space Needle, it was built for the World’s Fair in 1962 which drew over 2.3 million visitors. It is hard to believe that the design of the Space Needle was first put on a napkin in a coffee house. The Space Needle is the result of a compromise between the designs of two men, John Graham, Jr. and Edward E. Carlson. The artist was Edward E. Carlson and was inspired by the Stuttgart Tower in Germany. Hey coffee drinkers - Seattle is home to the original Starbucks and the store still retains its original look. You will find this world famous coffee maker at another famous Seattle hot spot - Pike Place Market. Pike Place Market is home to Seattle’s first farmers market, which is all about fresh and a great place to eat! Yes eat, after all what is vacation for - food! (lol). As with other port cities, Seattle is not without it's great museums such as the Museum of History and Industry, or the Nordic Heritage Museum plus many other awesome museums. There are so many cool places to see when you are in this beautiful Pacific Northwest city of Seattle. So we have visited ports from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. Each port city we stopped at is unique in its own right. Each port city we visited is home to a cruise line, although some may be seasonal. Each of these ports is a quick trip by air from Reno; however, it may be easier to drive to San Francisco by personal vehicle, or think Amtrak. Each port offers parking nearby for a fee.

What length for shorts? That's a question many women have asked while trying on a host of clothes in the dressing room. There are so many choices today, including regular shorts, Bermuda shorts, capris, and cropped pants. Different people offer so many tidbits of advice, and often they contradict each other. And you're still left wondering what length works: shorts, capris, or cropped pants. People define these bottoms differently, but length usually dictates classification, regardless of whether you fall under misses, petites or women’s sizes:
Shorts Hem falls at or above knee | Capris Hem falls between ankle and knee Cropped Pants Hem falls around ankle (These pants are sometimes also called "high-waters.") Length not only determines what to call these garments; it can also determine what looks best on your body. Dressing for your body type requires you to evaluate the points you want to emphasize or de-emphasize. So what length for shorts ultimately depends on your feelings about your body. For instance, if you want to emphasize long legs, you'll choose clothingto do so. If you think your long legs make you look too lanky, you'll choose clothes that de-emphasize the length of your legs. But if you want to follow the advice of fashion gurus instead of just going on your impressions when you look in the mirror, you'll need to understand body shapes. Fashion designers have often considered the hourglass shape to be the archetype of female body shapes. Thus fashion consultants often advise women with other body types how to create the illusion of a more hourglass-type figure. A box-shaped woman gets tips how to create the illusion of a waist, and a triangle-shaped woman is told how to create the illusion of bulkier shoulders to balance out her bottom half and create a greater sense of symmetry. Symmetry, in fact, is the key thing you may want to think about achieving when you shop for womens clothing. That is, shoulders and hips should look the same width (with definition at the waist), and torso, neck, and head should look the same length as legs. When you're deciding what length for shorts, you'll be concerned with the length of your upper half matching your legs. The general consensus is that longer shorts or shorter capris look good on most women. Longer capris and cropped pants can make your legs look shorter, so you'd want to avoid those unless you have long legs. Length and width both play a role in selecting your clothes. Remember symmetry. What length for shorts may not be the only factor you need to consider. You may also need to consider the hem shape, rise of the waist, and pocket detailing. Advice can help you decide what length works: shorts, capris, or cropped pants. But the ultimate decision has to rest with how you feel when you look in the mirror. If you follow someone's fashion advice, but you still don't feel good in a particular outfit, don't buy it. Spring has officially sprung and we cannot wait to see everyone's garden in full bloom! Our favorite part about being a floral designer is seeing flowers in bloom all year round, rain or shine! We love being able to brighten someone’s day any time of year by delivering a fresh cut floral arrangement right to your door! You might be wondering to yourself, "How do they get flowers all year round?", and the answer is, the wonderful growers all over the world make it possible! We get flowers from farmers primarily in California, Florida and South America, but due to the season or variety, they don't always have what we need, that's when our flowers make a journey from all over the world, anywhere from Holland, Australia, or Asian countries, just to make into your flower arrangement! The flowers can be grown in a field outdoors, or in a controlled environment like a greenhouse with artificial sun and heating. Cut flower production has a long and distinguished history. Roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums have been cultivated for centuries in many parts of the world. Now, with the development of air transportation and refrigerated trucks in the last fifty years accelerated the concentration of the cut flower industry and allowed it to move to areas with the best climates for optimum production conditions and lower production costs and made it possible to grow and send out 100's of different species of flowers and greens. For the consumer the situation could not be better. Large amounts of modestly priced flowers are readily available and they can choose from a staggering array of gorgeous flowers, foliage’s, stems, and fruits. All they have to do is look for them.
Birth Month Flowers and their Meanings January's birth flower, the carnation, comes in several
different colors to convey different meanings, much like roses. A pink carnation means affection, while a red carnation means 'I love you.' White carnations mean pure love, striped carnations means regret that a love is not shared and yellow means rejection or disappointment. The other January flower is the snowdrop, which used to be considered bad luck due to the fact that it would always seem to appear to grow in graveyards. Nowadays, it signifies hope and beauty.
February's birth flower is the violet, which signifies watchfulness, loyalty, and faithfulness. Give a violet to someone to let them know you'll always be there for them. The other February flower is the primrose, which lets someone know you can't live without them. March's birth flower is the daffodil, which means unequaled love; the sun is always shining whenever your significant other is around. The other March flower is the jonquil, which signifies desire for affection returned. It also is used to convey sympathy. April's birth flower is the daisy which conveys innocence, loyal love, and purity. It is also a flower given between friends to keep a secret; the daisy means "I'll never tell." The other April flower is the sweet pea. Sweet peas signify blissful pleasure, but are also used to say good-bye. May's birth flower is the lily of the valley, which signifies sweetness, humility, and a return to happiness. If you want to show your loved one that your life is complete with them, give them a few lilies of the valley. The other March flower is the hawthorn plant, which represents hope and supreme happiness. Hawthorne signifies that you want only the best for the recipient.
July's birth flower is larkspur. Each color variation of larkspur has a different meaning: pink means fickleness, white conveys a happy nature, and purple normally represents a first love. Generally, larkspur indicates strong bonds of love. The other July flower is the water lily, which signifies purity and majesty. August's birth flower is gladiolus, or 'sword lily.' Gladiolus represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation. With gladiolus, the recipient's heart is being "pierced with love." The other August flower is the poppy. A red poppy signifies pleasure; a white poppy is given for consolation, and a yellow poppy wishes wealth and success. September's birth flower is the aster. Asters are mainly symbols of powerful love. The other September flower is the morning glory. Morning glories are simple symbols of affection. October's birth flower is the pumpkin bloom. Just kidding—it's actually the marigold. Marigolds are often given as a sign of warm or fierce, undying love, or as a way of saying that you're content with being with the recipient. The other October flower is cosmo, a symbol of order, peace, and serenity. November's birth flower is the chrysanthemum. A red chrysanthemum means "I love you;" a white chrysanthemum means innocence, purity, and pure love; a yellow chrysanthemum means slighted love. December's birth flower is the narcissus which embodies the idea that you want your beloved to stay just the way they are. The other December flower is holly, which symbolizes your wish for domestic happiness.
June's birth flower is the rose, which has more meanings than one can count! A pink rose means perfect happiness, while a red rose means "I love you." A white rose signifies innocence and purity, while a yellow rose conveys jealousy or a decrease in love. A bouquet of roses means sincere gratitude, whereas a single rose amplifies the meaning of the color (a single red rose means "I REALLY love you"). The other June flower is honeysuckle, which is a strong symbol for the everlasting bonds of love.

8 oz (250 g) bulk hot Italian pork sausage (see Cook’s Tip) 3 garlic cloves 3 cups (750 mL) unsalted chicken stock 1 jar (24 oz/680 mL) marinara sauce (2½ cups/625 mL) 12 oz (350 g) medium shell pasta 4 oz (125 g) reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchâtel) ¼ cup (50 mL) fresh basil leaves 1 cup (250 mL) seasoned croutons 2 oz (60 g) fresh Parmesan cheese (½ cup/125 mL grated) 1. Preheat broiler. Cook sausage in Rockcrok® (2.5-qt/2.35-L) Everyday Pan or Rockcrok® (4-qt/3.8-L) Dutch Oven over medium heat 4–6 minutes, breaking into crumbles with Mix ‘N Chop. 2. If you consume alcoholic beverages, try organic beer or wine. They’re better for your health and the planet, and they taste good, too. Historian Gregg Smith writes that fermented beverages have been nourishing body and enlivening spirit since the very dawn of civilization, dating at least as far back as when the ancient Mesopotamians began storing away “liquid bread” for later use. If you already consume alcoholic drinks, consider buying organic beer or wine for your social engagements and celebrations. How to Prolong the Benefits of Bodywork A massage works in wonderful ways, easing stress and pain, calming the nervous system, increasing circulation, loosening tight muscles, stimulating internal organs, and enhancing skin. The multiplicity of physiological responses sends a simple, clear message to the mind: Massage feels good. Of course, you want to hold on to that just-had-a-massage feeling -total body relaxation, muscles relaxed and at ease, and fluid movement restored -- for as long as possible. But how long that bliss lasts depends on the state of your body. If you're suffering from chronic pain or recovering from injury, then it may take more sessions and perhaps different modalities before optimal health is restored. If massage is part of your regular health regimen, then it's more likely the effects will endure. In other words, the effects of massage are cumulative, like any healthy habit. The more often you get a massage, the greater and longer-lasting the benefits.
Massage Frequency How often you receive massage depends on why you're seeking massage. In dealing with the general tension of everyday commutes, computer work, and time demands, a monthly massage may be enough to sustain you. On the other hand, if you're seeking massage for chronic pain, you may need regular treatments every week or two. Or, if you're addressing an acute injury or dealing with high levels of stress, you may need more frequent sessions. Your situation will dictate the optimum time between treatments, and your practitioner will work with you to determine the best course of action. "You need to consider how you felt before the session and how you felt after, and then look at how long you maintain that," says Pieter Sommen, the chair of the eastern department in the Swedish Institute School of Massage Therapy in New York. In general, experts say "regular" is preferable, but how regular depends on your situation. While daily massage would be delightful, practical considerations such as cost, time, and physical need likely determine the frequency of treatments. "It's best to maintain a schedule," says Eeris Kallil, CMT, a shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy in Colorado. "That way the body becomes conditioned and prepared for session at specific intervals."
Maintenance Whether you get a massage weekly, monthly, or just every once in a while, the following habits can maximize and extend the afterglow of treatment.

Diet
One bit of advice you'll hear over and over again is to drink plenty of water after a massage. Bodywork -- no matter the particular modality -- releases toxins, such as lactic acid and carbonic acid, that need to be flushed from the body. Massage also promotes circulation, increasing blood flow and oxygen and stimulating the lymphatic system, which helps rid the body of pathogens. Aftermassage hydration supports these functions, helping to eliminate released impurities, sooner rather than later.
Finally, since you've just rid the body of toxins, support the body's renewed state by adhering to a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which will continue the detoxification process. Lay off the espresso and all adrenaline-challenges for a time -- which would short-circuit relaxation anyway -and enjoy the calm.
Stretching Another helpful habit is stretching between massages to maintain joint mobility, prevent muscles from tightening up again, and keeping the life energy flowing. This may mean doing yoga or whatever specific or full-body stretches suggested by your practitioner. After a shiatsu session, for example, your practitioner may recommend "makko-ho" stretches, a series of six exercises designed to keep energy circulating. "This series of stretches take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes a day, but really help keep the chi flowing through the body," says Kallil.
Exercise Working out can also help maintain the benefits of massage, and this habit should be continually cultivated. However, if you're receiving massage therapy to help speed muscle strain recovery, you may need to ease up on the exercise for a while and give the body time to heal -- particularly if you're recovering from a strenuous body-pummeling training regimen. "You don't want to over-work your body," says Kallil. That is, if running is taking a toll, try something more gentle and meditative such as swimming, walking, or tai chi.
The benefits of massage are many, including: increasing circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients throughout the body; stimulating lymph flow and boosting immunity; relaxing overused or tight muscles; increasing joint mobility and range of motion; reducing recovery time after strenuous workouts or surgery; and relieving back pain and migraines, just to name a few. A Yoga Experience Wow! I am told that April is “Stress Awareness” month. I don’t know why April was picked for the honor, (tax day?). Every month in my life is an opportunity for dealing with stress in the most effective way I’m aware of. So I guess you’d say every month for me is “stress management awareness” month. I am certainly aware of the stressors in my life, and I definitely want to manage my reaction to those stressors in a healthy way.

blood pressure, mental and physical tension. Systems which are not needed at this time such as, digestion, reproduction and elimination all slow down. The immune system is impaired. As soon as the threat is resolved, all bodily systems return to normal.
Stress has become a commonplace term. Even young children will express their frustration by saying they are “stressed out”. Stress related diseases are on the rise, so much so, that western medicine has created a special field of study for them. In fact, most diseases are thought to have a stress factor involved.
This was different for our ancestors, because as soon as the tiger was either killed or killed them, the problem was solved. Today, our thoughts keep the danger alive. We worry and agonize over possible threats, which may or may not happen. Our mental state affects our physical health directly. Our thoughts create an emotional reaction. The emotional reaction activates certain hormonal responses, which in turn, affect the body.
Generally speaking, our physiological response to stress (a perceived threat to well-being) is the same as it was for our ancestors, the cave men. Back in the day, however, physical survival usually depended on keeping self and family out of the mouths of wild animals. Today the idea of losing a job, a mate or our health are the types of things folks experience as stressful. Our bodies don’t know if we’re running from a real tiger, or if we’re contemplating divorce. Whatever the perceived danger, our bodies are alerted to it and our system goes into preparation for ‘fight or flight’. The adrenal glands secrete hormones which act upon the autonomic nervous system. Certain systems go into full alert, ready to act, and other systems are shut down. We experience an increase in heart rate,
The problem with modern day reaction to stress is that, without resolution, it becomes chronic. If I am contemplating divorce, I probably began thinking about it long before I act on it. My body is alerted to the danger and it remains on alert causing my system to be in chronic overload. I worry about emotional pain, financial stability, children, housing, loneliness, security, loss of self-esteem, social ramifications and on and on. These worries cause my body to be in danger alert mode day after day, and possibly for years, unless I take action and learn stress resolution. It is easy to see how chronic elevated heart rate, muscle tension, blood pressure, and weakened immune system can put our health in jeopardy.

Ah, is this where yoga comes in? Well, yes it does, and just as important, this is where management of thoughts comes in. ‘Form follows thought’. In other words, the body reacts in some way to every thought we give energy to. Thoughts either nourish us, are neutral, or they put us on alert. Loving thoughts nurture us and fearful thoughts cause pain, frustration, and anxiety. I remember one thing from Psychology 101; ‘We can’t think beyond our emotions’. So when a fearful thought occurs and we believe it and give it energy, the chemicals kick in and soon we’re off and riding the waves of emotional turmoil. If we act on those emotions, chances are we are simply reacting to what we think is a real threat to our well-being. We say and do things we regret later. However, we can take charge and wait until the chemicals move through our body before we act. We don’t have to go into ‘knee jerk’ mode. Once the chemicals have run their course, we are able to think clearly and act in a positive and intelligent way to the situation. It is important to take the time necessary, for these ‘uncomfortable feelings’ to wash through the body. I remember once sitting with ‘fear’ for 24 hours, before it finally cleared my system. I was so grateful that I didn’t believe that my emotions gave me the right to act out. I was saved from the guilt and shame that accompanies inappropriate, irrational behavior. Chemicals released by fear act in the body much the same way as do chemicals from drugs or alcohol. If I have put alcohol in my body, I certainly will not make any major decisions until the alcohol is processed and gone. If there is anger in my body, I can know what it is and also refuse to act on it. I can wait until it is processed and vanished before I decide what to do. I do not expect to think clearly when I am under the influence of alcohol. Why should I think my actions will be intelligent and loving when I am under the influence of fear? And now we can insert the principles of yoga into this discussion. Basically, the practice of yoga promotes relaxation. Relaxation changes the chemicals in our body from negative to positive, from fear to peace. Relaxation returns all systems in our bodies to balance. We begin
with the breath when we are in stress mode. There are many anti-stress breaths taught in yoga classes. It is well worth the time it takes to research breathing techniques to find one or two that work for you. The body calms with the breath because other chemicals are released into the body, chemicals which cause a sense of ease. As the mind also relaxes, we tend to give up the need to be ‘right’ and our thinking becomes open and creative. Many solutions may come to mind concerning the thought/situation which originally triggered the stress response. We find that when we inquire into the truth of the original fear-based thought, it rarely is true. As we give up false ‘triggers’, fear is replaced with gratitude, peace, and a sense of well-being. The more we practice coming out of fear, the easier it becomes. We also find that things don’t bother us as much as they used to. It’s exhilarating to realize that a situation which would at one time have sent us into a ‘tizzy’, seems unimportant and even silly now. There have been many people who have actually grown from losing a job, a spouse or even perfect health. Difficulties give us the opportunity to dig deep and to find renewed spirituality and connection to all of life. Life’s bumps are not the end of the world for us. There are simply challenges to be met and solutions to be explored. We don’t have to crumble in the face of perceived threats. We can question the validity of our thoughts and finding them lacking, change our perception. We can rise up and keep putting one foot in front of the other. We don’t have to let fear get the best of us. We always have the opportunity to choose peace and growth. Life is rich. Let’s dig in! How the FCAA Helps People, Together There Are Endless Possibilities Since 2008, the Frontier Community Action Agency (FCAA) Family Resource Center has been providing social services to the individuals and families of Humboldt County. As a local non-profit agency, the FCAA is working towards a better tomorrow, and giving a hand up instead of a hand out to all individuals and families in need. The FCAA Family Resource Center is committed to building a network of support between individuals and families, as well as, improved access and knowledge of potential social service resources. By establishing this network, individuals and families are able to connect to resources and opportunities that promote healthy lifestyles and stronger communities. The FCAA's Family Advocates are available to clients Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and are capable of guiding individuals through the bulk of paperwork required in obtaining individual and family resources. This service allows clients the ability to interview for their SNAP formerly known as food stamps on a face-to-face basis, as well as, show original documents when needed for the purpose of completing the SNAP application process.

As a result, our organization plays a vital role at responding to the needs of our clients, and promoting the interaction and networking of individual and families between much needed social service resources. By creating easy access to the full range of services provided above, the FCAA is able to help individuals and families move up and out of poverty, and as a result allow the community to begin to thrive. In addition, the efficient optimization of service delivery allows for more integrated face-to-face contact between the client and Family Advocate. The FCAA has many success stories to share in responding to a client’s needs upon walking through our doors. A gentleman walked through our doors almost four years ago after his family did everything they could to get him off of the streets in California. He had just been released from prison, had no place to live, and was on probation for the next 3 years. This meant he was not allowed to cross state lines. It took the family working with our local Parole and Probation office in learning the steps that needed to be made in applying for his interstate compact or crossing of state lines. After months the family was finally able to get his probation transferred to Winnemucca. Our Humboldt Coordinator assisted this client in making a resume in which he took advantage of and applied everywhere he could. After 3 months of applying throughout
the area, he obtained employment. Four years later he is still employed with the same company and moving up to a supervisor position, he is off probation, and doing very well. The FCAA encourages increased community collaboration between local businesses, non-profits, religious, school, county, state, and federal partners to continue to maximize our counties resources and reduce our duplication of services. As a result, the FCAA will continue to support efforts that focus on the betterment and growth of our community. Spring is a time for new life. It is also a time for new puppies to grace our homes and our hearts. Unfortunately, an insidious disease called canine parvovirus (also known as “parvo”) lurks around Winnemucca and can cause puppies to become seriously ill. In order to keep puppies safe, owners need to be aware of parvovirus, its symptoms, and how it can best be prevented and/or treated. So what is parvo? Parvo is a virus that attacks the gastrointestinal, or digestive, tract of dogs. It most commonly attacks puppies (dogs under one year of age) and can be fatal. Symptoms of parvovirus include lethargy (or inactivity), not wanting to eat, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and a sore belly. An infected puppy may show only some or all of these symptoms. Additionally, symptoms may change as the disease progresses. Luckily, there are a few actions pet owners can take to help prevent parvo. First, all puppies should be vaccinated against parvovirus. The parvovirus vaccination is usually given by a veterinarian as a combination vaccination (with other infectious disease vaccinations such as distemper, hepatitis and parainfluenza, for example), and is given in a series. The first vaccination is given at 6 to 8 weeks of age, and then every 3 to 4 weeks thereafter until the puppy is 16 weeks old or older (typically 3 to 4 shots). It is important to understand the reason for the series. Puppies receive some disease immunity directly from their mothers; this is called maternal immunity and it is passive, meaning the puppy’s own immune system is not activated, and it fades away over time after the puppy is born. As the puppy grows, its own immune system can begin to actively develop antibodies to protect it from disease. While some maternal immunity remains in the puppy, however, the puppy’s own immune system will not develop enough antibodies to fully protect it. Since it is unknown exactly when the initial maternal immunity from the mother is gone, and when the puppy’s immune system fully takes over, the vaccination series allows for protection of the puppy from disease while this transition is taking place. Making sure that the last vaccination in the puppy series is given at 16 weeks or older ensures that the puppy’s own immune system will fully respond to the vaccination and it will be fully protected from the pertinent diseases.
While vaccination seems to be the perfect solution to preventing parvo, two cautionary notes must be realized. First, parvo vaccinations are not 100% effective 100% of the time. While instances in which properly vaccinated puppies contract parvo are rare, they do occur on occasion. Additionally, vaccines must be handled properly to be as effective as possible. Parvo vaccine must be maintained at a specific temperature (under refrigeration) at all times. Anyone who vaccinates their own puppies should ensure that the vaccine they purchase and use has been strictly controlled and handled to maintain the highest efficacy. Despite these cautions, proper vaccination provides every puppy the best possible chance to prevent a parvovirus infection. Another important aspect of parvo prevention is limiting or preventing exposure. Canine parvovirus is extremely contagious and is transmitted via infected feces. The virus can remain infectious on the ground or objects (blankets, carpets, toys, shoes) for long periods of time. Puppy owners should avoid letting them walk around at places frequented by dogs of unknown vaccination status (parks, dog parks, kennels, stores that allow dogs, etc.) and should prevent contact with other dogs of unknown vaccination status until after they have had their last puppy vaccination. If a puppy is suspected of having parvo, it should be brought to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are key to saving the parvoinfected puppy. The veterinarian can perform a parvo test to determine if the virus is present. If the puppy tests positive, treatment will be necessary. Since parvo is a virus, there is no medication that will kill the virus, but supportive care is needed to help the puppy fight the infection and to provide the best chances of survival. Typical treatment includes hospitalization, intravenous fluids to combat dehydration, antibiotics to prevent or combat secondary bacterial infections, anti-nausea/antivomiting medicine, and of course lots of tender loving care. Watching a cute, cuddly, vulnerable puppy fight the ravages of parvovirus is truly heartbreaking. Awareness and taking a few positive preventative steps can help keep all of our puppies safe and healthy this lovely spring.
