Thick or thin, New York or Chicago, pizza rules! Everybody loves pizza. As everyday food or a special occasion feast, it always satisfies everyone at the table. We all have a favorite pizza joint on speed dial, but you may discover the best pizzeria of all is right in your own kitchen.
Pizzas - and Calzones
Pizza, Pizza, Pizza Pizza has its origins as peasant food – simple dough mixed and rolled into a canvas for leftovers or seasonal foods. Some variation of bread with toppings and spices has existed in all cultures as a food staple. The modern, Italian-inspired pizza in the States claims two seminal moments. The tomato and cheese combo is to Naples in 1889 where she was served a special pizza made of tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella. The dish was a hit. The second pivotal pizza popularity point occurred in 1905 when Gennaro Lombardi opened the first commercial pizzeria in New York. Lombardi’s Pizzeria Napoletana. The rest is history – when something works, it works!
Pizza Trivia
Thick Crust If a thicker, substantial crust is your preference, this recipe is the perfect starting place for your own explorations. The dough mixes up quickly and handles easily. Because this pizza is so loaded with toppings, the crust and sauce are first partially baked. Just as the crust has set its form, the pizza is removed from the oven for the addition of cheese and toppings, then the baking is finished. Personalize the toppings to your own liking.

Thin Crust Thin is in with this pizza – thin crust that is. We must say that this thin crust recipe is one of the easiest we’ve come across. It mixed up in a jiffy, and was super easy to handle. It baked up into a crispy, crack-like base. Most importantly, it tasted delicious with the collage of spinach and cheese just browned and bubbly. A mix of ricotta and fresh basil formed the atypical sauce layer, wilted baby spinach the next, and four different cheeses intertwined in melted fashion for the top layer. Delicioso!
Classic Pan Pizza with the Works

Makes 3 12-in. (30 cm.) pizzas. Serves 6
“Pizza with the works” traditionally refers to pizza with the combination of cheese, pepperoni, onion, mushrooms, and green peppers. Try some of our variations for tasty extras.
This twist on the classic white pizza hides wilted spinach between two sumptuous layers of cheese.
1 recipe basic pan pizza crust (below) 1 recipe basic pizza sauce (below) 2 cups shredded mozzarella 8 oz. pepperoni, thinly sliced 8 oz. white or button mushrooms, sliced 1/2 large yellow onion, thinly sliced 1 large green pepper, seeded and thinly sliced crosswise Follow the instructions for making a rectangular pizza crust. Preheat oven to 550°F (300°C). Spread sauce evenly over the pizza crust, leaving a 1/2-inch (1-cm.) border around the edge. Place on bottom rack in oven and bake for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and spread shredded mozzarella evenly over sauce. Arrange pepperoni, onion, mushroom, and pepper slices on top. Return to oven and bake for another 5 to 6 minutes, until cheese has melted and crust is golden brown. Remove from oven and let stand for 5 minutes. Slice into 12 squares and serve immediately.

1 recipe basic thin pizza crust (below) 2 cups ricotta 2 tbsp. finely chopped fresh basil Salt and freshly ground black pepper Pinch of nutmeg 1 cup wilted and chopped spinach 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella 3/4 cup grated fontina 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan 1/4 cup grated Romano Preheat oven to 500°F (250°C). Place pizza stone or unglazed clay tiles on bottom of gas oven or lowest rack of electric oven. Following instructions, make three 12-in. (30-cm.) discs of pizza dough. To prepare topping, combine ricotta and basil in a medium bowl. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Lightly dust pizza peel with flour or cornmeal. Place one disc of pizza dough on peel and spread 2/3 cup ricotta mixture over the dough, leaving 1/2–in. (1-cm.) border around the edge. Arrange 1/3 of the spinach over ricotta and top with the four cheeses. Gently shake pizza from the peel to the stone or tiles. Bake 4 to 6 minutes, until cheese is melting and crust is puffy around edges and crispy on the bottom. Slide the peel back under the pizza to remove from oven. Repeat with remaining 2 pizzas.
Baking differences HOME vs. a PIZZERIA
Pizzerias have the advantage of pizza ovens or wood-fired ovens with temperatures in the 900 F +/- range. Pizzas bake in 1-2 minutes in that environment. Most home ovens max out at 500550F. To compensate for the lower temperatures keep in mind these two tricks:
PAYDAY LOANS
1: Use a baking stone: Baking stones are invaluable for the home pizzeria. Place the stone on the lowest rack of a cold oven. Allow the stone to heat during the preheating. Place the pizza directly on the baking stone for maximum heat transfer. The hot stone quickly bakes the crust. Use a pizza peel to transfer the pizza to and from the stone.
Required to secure a loan:
2: Partially bake thicker crusts: For thick crusts, the lower heat and weighty toppings may thwart optimal results. Prebake the crust (with the tomato sauce added) for 5-6 minutes. Remove from the oven to add the desired toppings, and return to the baking stone to finish the baking.
Check out our online coupon
Loaded Pizzas: If you like a lot of toppings, consider pre-cooking some of them – We found that some vegetables benefitted from a stint in the microwave on absorbent paper towels to begin the cooking and to drain some of the water away. The lower temperatures of the home oven don’t evaporate water from the toppings as quickly as a commercial oven.

What is a Calzone? Think of a calzone as a folded pizza. The calzone crust is quite similar to a pizza crust, and the same flavorful fillings are tucked inside. Calzones are served individually, though some are so large, they’re easily shared. A nice variation to pizza night. If you’ve never tried making calzones at home, you need to try this recipe. Once again, the dough recipe was a gem! Quickly mixed and easily rolled, the dough sealed up reliably, and browned evenly to picture perfection. The balance between crust and filling was just right. These folded, individual pizzas are fun to serve and eat. The pocket pie nature of calzones implies a transportability and “out-of-hand” eating that translates well to picnics and “eating-onthe-go” situations.
Sausage & Mushroom Calzones Makes 4 calzones With its combination of spicy and earthy flavors, this calzone is pure comfort food on a winter’s evening. 1 recipe basic calzone crust (below) 12 oz. Cookbook Review
Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). While the dough is resting, prepare the filling. Brown the crumbled sausage meat and mushroom slices in olive oil for 5 to 6 minutes, until sausage is cooked through. Add pizza sauce.
By Rebecca Baugniet. Copyright 2008. Published by Sellers Publishing, Portland, ME.
Follow the instructions for rolling the dough into 4 equal circles. Using a pastry brush, glaze the top edge of the circles with water. Spoon 1/4 of the filling onto the lower half of each circle. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup mozzarella. Fold the top over so that the edge of the top sits 1/2 in. (1 cm.) away from the bottom half. Lightly glaze the edge of the top piece and fold the bottom over to seal tightly. Make a 1/2-in. (1-cm.) slit in the top to allow steam to escape. Brush tops with melted butter and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon Parmesan. Place the calzones on a preheated baking stone or on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake on the middle rack for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the filling is hot and the crust is golden brown.
500 Pizzas and Flatbreads
This petite book packs in four times the number of recipes than most cookbooks. The format introduces the basics of pizzas and flatbreads, presents core recipes, and a generous number of improvisational variations. We were particularly delighted with the three crust recipes that we tried; each one was easy to work with, and yielded great results. Each major type of pizza genre is covered in depth. Many unusual and innovative pizza ideas were presented. We’ve marked the page for the Chevre, Arugula, and Pear Pizza for future study, and can’t wait to try Turkish Pizza with its spicy, ground lamb topping. A Chicago DeepDish version is next on our to-do list. But pizza comprises only half the book! The other half focuses on all types of flatbreads – focaccia, chapatii, papadum, pita, arepas, pupusa, and many more. The book is a great introduction to the rich global traditions of baking flatbreads and embellishing them with toppings of all kinds.

Fiesta Dinnerware is a line of ceramic dinnerware glazed in different solid colors. The original shapes, glazes and concept of combining various colors were designed by the company’s art director, Frederick Hurten Rhead in the 1930’s. The dinnerware was introduced for retail sales to great success in 1936. They withdrew from production in 1973 in response to declining sales before reintroducing the line in 1985. Some of the original shapes were redesigned and other

new shapes were designed as part of the 1985 reintroduction. As a line of “open” dinnerware, Fiesta allows buyers to select by the piece, rather than requiring the purchase of entire sets. Notably, buyers can mix and match from the color ranges. Fiesta’s current colors derive from the home décor and fashion trends. The appeal with Fiesta is its bright colors, modern designs and affordability. As an early Homer Laughlin Company brochure stated:
• Attractive color looks unique and stylish • Easy to clean and keep looking great • Finished with bold, brushed metal touch points As the new look of modern luxury, Slate is unlike anything on the market today, and it’s sure to ignite a style revolution! It is sophisticated and modern with a twist of verve, and a dose of stunning. It’s a timeless new finish that beautifully blends in, to help you truly stand out.
Also during the Home Show, guests were invited to see GE’s newest line-up, Slate. These appliances are just as stylish and sophisticated as stainless steel but with a strong, earthy feel.
Do you want something new in your home? Spring cleaning went well but there is still something missing? We have Accent tables, plants, candles and clocks….everything you need to spruce your home up this summer! Wondering how to add a personality to your house? Well it is easy, use some accessories. That is one of the best ways to make it your home. The theme of your décor can be fulfilled with a few decorative pieces. Doing it at the final stages of decorating would be perfect. It will complete the whole plan and give the refection of your true personality.
The benefits of slate include: • Resistant to fingerprints • Easily compliments other appliances
Once you determine your style, pick accessories that you love! Pillows, area rugs, throw blankets and mirrors all add dramatic

changes to your room. Consider adding lamps where you have none. Colorful artistic pieces can brighten your day when you see them. Even something as simple as fresh cut flowers and fruit displayed on a beautiful dining room table adds a simple beauty. Your home is your personal space. Be sure to select colors, styles and accessories that have meaning to you. Do whatever it takes to make you feel cozy and “at home”. It isn’t about what everyone else likes, this is all about you.

Re-elect
Sheriff Ed Kilgore I would like to highlight a few of the accomplishments that have taken place at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office over the last seven years. It is important to note that when I took office in January of 2007, the entire department was outdated. This ranged from broken dispatch chairs to emergency patrol vehicles being unreliable and unsafe. Technology within the agency was obsolete. There were numerous vacant positions throughout the agency and training was set at a bare minimum. The previous administration left no direction to move forward. During the calendar year 2007, we made many positive changes starting with actively filling vacancies with qualified men and women. This eventually led to better service to the public we serve. In March, we set up a process to form a volunteer Search and Rescue unit. By June, we had over 60 members who just wanted to help their community. This group has been directly involved with saving lives of those who have become lost, injured or stranded. During that year, we began the process of upgrading critical equipment such as radios and three patrol cars. In the Detention division, we installed a new control panel in the housing area, new cameras inside the cell units and a new commissary system. These changes were a critical step towards managing a safer facility for all. In Dispatch, there were new computers, a language translation system installed and the first Dispatch users group meeting took place. For all employees, there was increased training.

JUNE 2014 | everythingwinnemucca.com
During my first term as your Sheriff, the major accomplishments that I feel were notable from 2007 to 2010 were the following: ❖ Brought agency to full staff in both Patrol and Detention. ❖ Implemented a new cashless commissary system for Detention. ❖ Established a toll free line into Dispatch. ❖ Issued new handheld radios to all Deputies. ❖ Updated antiquated Patrol vehicle fleet. ❖ Created new volunteer Search & Rescue Unit. ❖ Instituted Drug Endangered Child program ❖ Provided all Deputies with new digital cameras and recorders. ❖ Issued GPS units to all Patrol Deputies. ❖ Established new certified Emergency Medical Protocols for Dispatch. ❖ Activated reverse 911 system. ❖ Started hosting Citizen’s Academies. ❖ Enhanced training for all employees.
Please help us in Re-Electing Sheriff Ed Kilgore In my second term as your Sheriff, I continued to look forward and focus on the needs of the community. Dispatch was a major priority on many fronts. First, was to address the 911 system that was severely outdated. There was basic 911 capabilities only, with no way to confirm the address. The enhanced 911 system was started, which allowed dispatch to locate cell phones and land lines with current addresses. Staffing continued to be a major hurdle due to the workload and working conditions at the dispatch facility. In 2012, a new Dispatch building was started and completed in the fall of 2013. This new building allowed our public safety dispatchers to focus solely on their duties as 911 operators and dispatchers. With the new building in place, the task of hiring and getting fully staffed became the priority. I am happy to say that as of this letter, we are in the process of filling the last position in Dispatch. This department has not been fully staffed in over 20 years!
The other project that affected all public safety first responders was the migration from wideband radios to narrowband and digital radios. This has proven to be a difficult issue to tackle. As our Dispatch center is the hub for area public safety, we rely strongly on the county’s Communication Department. While we work very well and closely with them, we have no management control over them, as they are a separate department. The Communication’s Department has been severely understaffed for some time. The critical infrastructure needed to have reliable communications during any emergency has been lacking. The County Commission funded a study to gauge the effectiveness of the county’s communications infrastructure. We are awaiting the results of that study at this time. Once our communications system is addressed, the first responders will be safer and more effective in collectively doing their jobs. Since being elected, I have never had a 9 to 5 standard. I always have time for people who come to my office, who want to talk in the grocery store or at the kid’s ball games, about any issues they may be having. I often take phone calls at home during the evening and on weekends. However, in an effort to keep up with our every moving society and to offer even more transparency to the residents, we instituted a few new practices. At the beginning of each year, I put out a State of the Sheriff’s office letter that runs in the newspaper and on our website. We hold at least one citizen’s academy each year to illustrate how law enforcement works and what law enforcement does day to day. Working with our partners, we also include speakers from the District Attorney’s office, the District Court Judges, Highway Patrol and Nevada Division of Investigation. We hold Open House meetings which are similar to community meetings. These meetings discuss current issues within the community and the Sheriff’s Office. It gives everyone an opportunity to ask questions in an open forum. We also set up a Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/HCSONV On our page we post press releases, bookings, events we host, historical photos, weekly facts about different facets of the law and the Sheriff’s Office. We have received many tips ranging from; areas of speeding, illegal drug activity, theft and wanted individuals. Our page has over 2900 followers and reaches approximately 4900 people each week.
In the seven years I have served as your Sheriff, I believe there has been a complete restructuring in terms of the Sheriff’s Office efficiency and operation, with the goal of reducing costs and saving taxpayer money, while still providing a high level of service to the residents of Humboldt County. Looking forward, I will continue to maintain current high training standards. There is a need within the patrol division to equip every vehicle with video cameras. Currently, not every vehicle has this technology. I also look forward to integrating real time mapping in Dispatch allowing the dispatchers to see and send the closest available resource to calls. In the Detention division, there is an immediate need to upgrade the video system within the facility. With all of these, funding is going to be an issue. As in my past terms as your Sheriff, I will seek out any potential grants to offset costs to the county. Our office will maintain the DARE program within the schools in Humboldt County and have plans to enhance our Deputy Explorer Program. This is a positive approach for teens to gain confidence, job skills and speaking skills that will pay off in any profession. We hope that they remain in law enforcement, as they are our next Deputies, Officers and Troopers. Lastly, the Sheriff’s Office will continue to be a key component working closely with other agencies to solve crimes and hold offenders accountable. I ask you to re-elect me as your Sheriff based on the work that has been accomplished and the work that remains to be done. I have remained committed to serving this county with the utmost respect. This will not change during the next four years as your Sheriff. Respectfully,
Ed Kilgore Ed Kilgore-Sheriff Humboldt County

Africa is home to 50 countries and is the second largest, and the second most populous continent in the world. Africa is believed to be the oldest inhabited territory on Earth dating back some 7 million years ago. Let’s start out by going to South Africa to a city called Cape Town. We will start here because it is a port city and you can also visit via cruise ship. Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa. Now you know if it is a great place there is always going to be an abundance of people. So let’s talk about some of the exciting things to do in Cape Town. As odd as it may sound to us here in the States, summer begins later in Cape Town, usually around November or December. So keep this in mind when planning a trip to this region. Now on to the fun stuff! I love jazz; after all, America is home to jazz music. With that being said, don’t under estimate the fantastic jazz players of South
Africa. In March there is an International Jazz Festival that is sure to please any jazz lover. There are some very cool trips just outside of Cape Town. For the wine lovers, South Africa has some top notch vineyards. These vineyards are being called the new world wines. You can visit vineyards in Wellington, Constantia, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, and Paarl, plus there are a few local vineyards in Cape Town as well. I could not imagine a wine lover not wanting to try the wines of South Africa. Here is another awesome spot to check out - Cape Point. Cape Point sits just east of Cape Town and offers a cable car ride up to a lighthouse with spectacular views of the junction between the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay. This area is in Table Mountain National Park. Like all areas we travel, there is also great food to try and Cape Town has many first-class restaurants. Cape Town also offers adventurous eaters tastes from

across the African continent, be it Xhosa fare like samp (crushed maize used in porridge) and marog (African spinach), spongy injeras (flatbreads) from Ethiopia, or Cape Malay cuisine. You can taste the food of Ethiopia at the beautiful and authentically decorated Addis in Cape. Here you are encouraged to eat with your hands, mopping up every drop of sauce with pieces of injera (flatbread). As you can tell I love food - it is always a treat to try foods from other countries. I will admit, some foods are great and some foods are hummmm? But that is my personal opinion, lol. You might also like to check out the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, this is just a great place to relax and take your time visiting such a beautiful garden. Your visit includes a fragrance garden and a section where plants used by sangomas (traditional African healers) are grown and much more. One last place to visit before we move on, you must take the three and a half tour of Robben Island. Here is where Nelson Mandela was in prison from 1964 to 1984 - for 18 of his 27 years that he spent in prison. Mandela believed in Democratic socialism and he was the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was loved and hated by many. Mandela was all about democracy, equality, and tolerance. Now let's head to South Africa's largest city – the city of Johannesburg. In the 1880's Johannesburg was in a gold rush and was found to be rich in minerals. The first people believed to inhabit this area were San (Saan) People, also known as Bushman. But into today's world it is a reverent major metropolitan city with many moons of history and has something for everybody. Now that we are here in the Gold City of Johannesburg, South Africa I want to start off the visit with arts and culture. This city is very deep in culture and should be one of the reasons to visit this area. Many of the creative and cultural training institutions are also based in the

inner city: The University of Witwatersrand's School of the Arts, the National Arts School, the South African Ballet Theatre, Moving into Dance Mophatong, the Dance Factory, the Market Theatre workshop, the Photographic Laboratory, Creative Industries Collective, and the Bag Factory just to name a few. But wait, there is much more. African people are wonderfully rich in art. Some of the most unique art has come from Africa. It is also the home of several major art galleries, including the province's premier institution, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, as well as the Standard Bank and Absa galleries. If you are like me and have the need to know, you’re in luck because Johannesburg has a good number of museums! We will start off by going to the Nelson Mandela National Museum. Nelson Mandela lived in this house from 1946 to 1962, and it gives a great sense of Mandela history. This is where he said "I have come home at last" in 1990 after serving 27 years in prison. Mandela returned to the house after his release, despite suggestions from government officials that he find a safer home. Another great visit is the Johannesburg Art Gallery, which was opened to the public in 1910 and contains the works from the 15th century to the present. OK - I know what you’re thinking, when is he going to talk about Africa! When is he going to talk about wild Africa! Well... How about now? Yes, Africa is famous for safaris, real safaris, which are a great way to see nature at its best. If you are planning to see the wild side of Africa you should plan to do so within the next ten years. I point this out because like anywhere on the face of the earth, Africa is changing as the demand for natural resources are at an all-time high (sad). Here is a small piece from National Geographic posted by Dr. Steve Boyes. "In the next 15-20 years we are going to lose our last wilderness areas to poor land
management, pollution, poaching, wildlife trade, logging, agriculture, conflict, and the devastation of large-scale mining across the continent. The impacts are clear and Africa is just about to change forever. The great beating heart of this ancient continent, the birthplace of humankind, is dying.” Now I didn’t add this information to push you into thinking the world is coming to an end, I just wanted to inform you as a reader that this is an issue that they are facing in Africa. We here at Just Right Cruises land and sea vacations do not believe in forced sales, we are here to help people plan and book their vacations. Now, let's move on. Are safaris still available? Of course they are as we talk about the wild side of Africa. Are you looking for a true African bush experience? South Africa has some very beautiful landscapes where you can still see the real Africa! That's right, head out to the bush on a true African safari. Don't fear, you don’t have to go at it on your own, nor is it advised! There are experienced tour companies to help you enjoy your African safari. Safaris range from short tours up to two weeks or more in the bush. Tour the world-renowned Kruger National Park – here you will find the real Africa! You will need to head to the area of Mpumalanga, about 200 miles east of Johannesburg. You can find out more about African safaris by speaking with your travel advisor. A must see is Victoria Falls, located in Zimbabwe. To visit this area it would be best to fly in from Johannesburg. The country of Africa is very large so planning a trip to this region of the world takes some careful planning. Africa offers a lot of unique travel, but if you are a serious traveler and want to feel the wild, then Africa is the place you need to consider. From beautiful cities to wild lions, hippos, and elephants for a safari vacation that you will never forget!

Gadget Guy Tinitell Years ago kids would play until it was dark outside with not a worry from a parent. Those days have past. In an age of constant crime, kidnapping and about a thousand other things to worry about, it’s a wonder parents even allow kids outside nowadays. Tinitell aims to change this with their Kickstarter campaign for a wearable mobile phone for kids. Parents get peace of mind while kids, well they get to be kids. Battery life will give a full week on standby or 60 minutes of talk time. You can also track your child with the built-in GPS/Glonass system that will position your child anywhere. Quickly synced with a smartphone, Tinitell allows your child quick one button calls with voice recognition or scroll through contacts with the use of the volume buttons. Answering a call is as simple as pushing the button. Of course Tintell is water resistant and made to fit “little” wrists. Tinitell will work with any SIM card with, of course, applicable fees. Let y!our kids roam worry free soon.

Look Hot Next to the
Grill!
Contributed by Tapestry Boutique Summer barbecues are casual affairs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t look your best while manning the grill or chatting with friends. Here’s how to keep cool and look effortlessly chic at your next event. You have everything you need to host a fabulous summer barbecue. Your burgers are legendary, your potato salad is to die for and you’ve got beers on ice. You’re done, right? Wrong! Too often, hostesses leave their outfit choice to the last minute because they are too busy doing lastminute tasks before the guests arrive. But wiggling into cutoff jean shorts and your last clean tank top may not be the best decision. A low key affair doesn’t mean that your fashion sense has to slide. Summer is the time to have fun with fashion. You can play with color and be a little flirty.
Let us here at Tapestry Boutique help you create that perfect outfit for any occasion. Create a showstopping outfit by picking out your bottoms first. The favorite pair of jeans you have hanging in the closet, some solid cropped pants or some stripped shorts. Be sure to pick a style that works best for your body type. Next, make a statement on top. Lace or crochet fabric tanks will keep you right on trend and cool as you bustle around playing host. Stripes and nautical continue to be popular this year. Keeping with the nautical theme, the most popular footwear is boat shoes or flip flops. Both men and women rock them. These shoes can be worn everywhere, from a barbecue to a beach. Lastly, have fun with color. Neon and other in-yourface colors, such as yellows and oranges, have come back into style and easily move from workplace to barbeques.
Tapestry Boutique is always receiving new items! Stop in often to see what’s new!
Palazzo Pants These wonderful pants are popular as a summer season style, as they are loose and tend to be flattering in light, flowing fabrics that breathe during hot weather. Come pick a wild bold pattern and rock yours! They are crazy so just match them with a simple top and accessory. The palazzo pants are cool and relaxing and make for a great alternative to shorts or skirts thus summer.
Weddings Whether you are planning to attend a formal evening wedding or a summer wedding on the beach, you will find your perfect guest attire here at Tapestry Boutique. And accessories? Oh yes, we have them! Dazzling bracelets, earrings, necklaces and even clutches to jazz up any outfit!
Hot Girl Pearls
Flip-Flops
Have you heard of Hot Girl Pearls? They are fashionable, FREEZABLE necklaces that will keep you cool regardless of where you go. When the heat is on, remove pearls from the freezer, fasten the magnetic clasp and quickly cool off! From barbecues to wine walks, gardening to lying by the pool---even out at the sand dunes enjoying time with your family….these great necklaces will keep you cool so you can enjoy your family and friends this summer.
Flip Flops are called thongs, jandals, go-aheads, slappies, slides, step-ins or a variety of other names throughout the world….but you can call these…. comfy and oh-so-cute! These easy sandals aren’t just for the beach anymore! Flip Flops pair perfectly with any summer fashion you have!

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has been used since 400 B.C. by the father of modern medicine – Hippocrates and others. It was considered a healing agent and, along with the addition of honey, was prescribed by Hippocrates for colds and coughs. This energizing tonic has many health benefits, and the popularity of apple cider vinegar continues to grow every day. There are many health benefits associated with apple cider vinegar but to get the maximum benefits one must use the raw non-distilled variety which comes with the mother.

Mother of vinegar is the slimy, gummy, jelly-like substance or layer of film that can form on the top of or in the liquid of apple cider vinegar. It can sometimes make the vinegar look cloudy. Sometimes, it's wispy and looks a lot like a little spider web. The mother is actually a cellulose substance made up of various Acetobacter, a very acidic strain of

bacteria. The Acetobacter combines with the oxygen in warm air to cause fermentation in apple cider, wine, or other alcoholic liquids to produce vinegar. It is the mother that gives the vinegar its characteristic sourness. Mother contains the enzymes and minerals which will not be found in processed vinegars that have been heated and filtered. Beneficial ingredients in raw apple cider vinegar with the mother have power to make us feel better, look better, and feel energized. Some of the beneficial ingredients in raw apple cider vinegar are: Potassium – helps fight against brittle teeth, hair loss, and runny noses. Pectin – helps to regulate blood pressure and
reduce bad cholesterol. Malic Acid – gives apple cider vinegar the properties
of being resistant to viruses, bacteria, and fungus. Calcium – supports strong bones and teeth. Ash – gives apple cider vinegar its alkaline property
which aids your body in maintaining proper pH levels for a healthy alkaline state. Acetic Acid – It appears that this acid slows the
digestion of starch which can help to lower the rise in glucose that commonly occurs after meals.

Reported benefits of apple cider vinegar with the mother include:
• A tablespoon of ACV mixed in 4 ounces of purified water after a meal has been used as a natural remedy for heartburn and as a replacement for heartburn medications. • Raw ACV may help improve bowel irregularity, thereby removing toxins form the body at a faster rate. • Helps clear up skin conditions and blemishes giving a more smooth texture and appearance. • Raw apple cider vinegar may help with joint pain and stiffness. • Apple Cider Vinegar helps break down fats so that your body can use them rather than store them. For this reason, many diets include ACV in the regimen. • Some studies show that Apple Cider Vinegar helps reduce glucose levels. • Studies have shown it helps with treating gout and arthritis. • Used to help prevent bladder stones & urinary tract infections. Raw organic apple cider vinegar is even good for pets. It has been used to help control fleas and even promotes a healthy shiny coat. Working Together Make a Difference!
The Frontier Community Action Agency (FCAA), a local non-profit, is working towards a better tomorrow for all those residents of Elko, Humboldt, Lander, and Pershing Counties. The FCAA is committed to serving our client’s to the best of our ability, and in giving them a hand up instead of a hand out to assist them in overcoming the roadblocks we all face at one time or another. The FCAA could not do this work without the collaboration of so many other agencies in Winnemucca, as it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes all of us working together to help those in need get through the steps needed in helping each individual and family get back on their feet. In 2007 a group was formed known as the Family Stability Council, concerned citizens meeting once a month to discuss what the needs of Humboldt County are and working together to make a difference and make it happen. This group will be starting up again and all residents of Humboldt County are invited to join this meeting in networking, announcing the programs they have to offer our community, as well as offering any feedback in addressing the needs of those living in our community. It’s amazing how a problem an agency has been having for weeks can be solved in 90 minutes with all of the collaboration of a group working together.

Three goals were made by the group back in 2007, the first goal the Family Stability Council came up with seven years ago was to make sure No Child is Hungry in Humboldt County two programs came out of that and we continue each year to serve children free meals. The Winnemucca Food Bank has been running the Back Pack Kids program sending food home to those children in need for the weekend and the FCAA serves the Summer Food Service Program in filling the gap for those whom may only receive a meal while in school. This program is free for all those youth 18 and younger and will be starting up again in Vesco City Park June 16. The Family Stability Council has also been working on two other goals which have both been a work in progress. A Place to Stay for Everyone has been one of the biggest challenges, but again by working together with all agencies in Humboldt County working towards the same goal we hope to have some more progress on the limit of affordable housing we have in Winnemucca, whether you have been transferred in your job, you have moved out of your parents’ home, or you have found yourself stranded and trying your best to get back on your feet by first obtaining employment and then finding a place to stay for you and your family. The FCAA has client’s come through the office regularly in the very situations mentioned above and do their best to guide each person in the right direction. The third goal the Family Stability Council continues to work on is Expanded Mental Health Services, through partnerships and the
funding through the Community Service Block Grant a video teleconference was set up through 6th Judicial Youth and Family Services, Humboldt General, and UNLV for youth to be able to obtain counseling via video. Appointments are made through Communities in Schools by calling 775-7381446. The Family Stability Council had a bit of a break, but is going to be meeting again starting Thursday May 29, 2014 12 p.m. at Chihuahua’s Restaurant. The FCAA will continue to coordinate the Family Stability Council meetings as we will meet once a month to discuss all that we each are doing for our Community. The FCAA will also continue to serve clients through one-on-one case management, employment assistance, college enrollment and financing application, resource and referral, energy assistance, welfare application assistance, rental application assistance, birth certificate and social security card applications, and social security payee. So, if you would like to volunteer, learn more about the programs we offer, or have any questions regarding the Family Stability Council meeting or our organization, please contact us at (775) 623-9003. Or stop by our offices, located at 640 Melarkey Street, Suite 3, Winnemucca, NV. The more people know about the social issues affecting our community, the more likely they are to take action to help or know how to help their own children and families. The FCAA will be celebrating the summer by bringing back the Summer Food Service Program, which is a FREE program offered to all children ages 18 and under at the Vesco City Park from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., June 16 - August 15th (Monday - Friday, Excluding Holidays). If you are willing and able to volunteer in helping the agency serve the children free meals throughout the summer we welcome you to give us a call and let us know when you are available to help. This program has been going for the last five years as a response to Mayor Putnam’s thoughts in a brain-storming session at a Family Stability Council meeting, in which the consensus was that no child should go hungry in Humboldt County.

Tips for Decorating on a budget
Contributed by Janet Jacaway, Real Estate Agent for Vision West Realty
You can create beautiful rooms on a budget. It’s very often the thought and confidence that goes into the selection and arrangement of rooms’ components that make it special.
Here are some tips: 1. Paint! Completely transform your room with just a

2. Rethink what you already have! It costs nothing

to reassess what your room already looks like. Why not move a few pieces around? Sometimes a fresh approach encourages you to get rid of tired pieces that drag your space down. Do you really need everything you see? Does everything have a purpose and a special meaning to you? If not, then give it away. Less is more.
existing one a makeover by recovering it in a new pattern. Get a little daring and see how a simple chair can be completely transformed using bold patterns and colors!
3. Choose lighting Adding dimmers to your space offers dimension and mood at very little cost. Or buy a fresh shade for your lamp. Consider replacing mismatched floor lamps with two new matching lamps. Place one on either side of your sofa or bed, and see how the room suddenly has style. 4. Update your pillows Can’t afford a new sofa? There are dozens of affordable, fabulous pillows that are one of a kind and will zip up your space instantaneously.
5. Catch some ZZZZZ’s Does your bedroom need an update? Give it one. Try buying just a new headboard with a unique fabric or pattern. Invest in a great set of sheets complete with shams. Choose a bold pattern that will define your room and don’t be afraid to mix and match.
6. Mirrors They add style and depth to any room, and you can find unique mirrors at discount stores and vintage shops. When they are grouped together, the mirrors bring elegance and personality to even the smallest of spaces.
Reaching me is simple! By phone at 304-1414 or email janet@visionwestrealty.com
9. Curtains Adding window treatments can revamp any space. Go for velvet or a bold pattern in a smaller room to give a luxe jewel-box effect. Elegant yet simple curtains for large spaces can often offer all the change you need.
10. Natures Artwork For inexpensive, spring-inspired artwork, look for a nature book filled with full-page illustrations of everything from exotic mushrooms to butterfly species to flowers. Carefully cut the pages from the book, frame them and hang. For added value interest and a more organic feel, stagger the frames on the wall like a collage. And the best part is when you’re ready for a new look, it’s easy to update your art collection with illustrations from another book. These are just a few tips for you to use when you are decorating on a budget. For other tips on buying and selling your home, give me a call. I am more than happy to help! I have access to all the listings in Winnemucca and can show you any property—regardless of whose sign is in the yard. Come experience what it feels like to have a professional on your side!

Koyote Kruisers & NEW OLD-STUFF These comments and more are what we hear when our classic cars are on display. Whenever someone has something they are very proud of, they love to show it off. If we value it then we are rewarded when others also express appreciation. Hopefully they also are interested in and enjoy the history behind it and the workmanship that made it what it is now. When like-minded people get together they discuss their common interests, in this case it would be their cars, and they often organize future meetings which may develop into clubs. As they continue to meet, they share stories and undoubtedly brag a little and enjoy passing on information about resources they have discovered. Discussions may include where the vehicle came from, engine type, paint job, body work, and upholstery. It is always fun to hear different opinions on stock (the desire to keep it just as it came from the manufacturer) or customizing (creative improvements or changes made from the original).
together to share their car passions and hobbies. Some of the charter members who first started Koyote Kruisers were: John and Louise Wiley, Martin Zamora, Herb and Mary Smith, Chuck and Barbara Davis, Randy and Cheryl Coy, Pete and Judy Albertson, and Mike and Marilyn James. Many of these names were well known and in some cases longtime residents and business people in Winnemucca.
Koyote Kruisers is the local car club in Winnemucca, Nevada. It came about in just this way when car enthusiasts discovered one another and decided to get

years of dreaming and searching for the perfect vehicle. Some have put in hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get the car just the way they want it. It is no wonder that people are very proud and protective of their “babies”. “PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH” signs are very visible when the cars are displayed. Even if the owner did not do the work himself, the price of purchasing a finished project can often equal that of a new modern car from a dealership.
as well as their faces.
In Winnemucca, Koyote Kruisers Car Club organizes its Show and Shine car show in mid-June to honor nostalgic days of the past. This year’s date is Saturday, June 21st. It will be held at Vesco City Park. Pre-registration and welcome will be at the Pig BBQ & Pub on Friday, June 20th. There are usually 80 to 100 cars from many of the western United States and sometimes even farther. It is exciting to welcome these travelers to our city and to get to know them. Often people are recognized and remembered from year to year by their outstanding cars

John Wiley was the first club president and now almost 25 years later Randy Coy is the current president. The names of members may have changed as have their cars, but the love and pride in their vehicles remain the same.
At the park on Saturday, there will be music, food and refreshment booths, and games and contests for the children. Of course, drawings for the raffle prizes, donated by Winnemuca members and businesses, will be held throughout the day with a grand prize of $200 to be given at the end of the show. Trophies will be awarded at about 4:00 P.M. Fifties Fever is put on by the Winnemucca Convention Center in late July. And of course Hot August Nights takes place in Reno at the beginning of August. Most towns in our area draw car enthusiasts with their own local car shows. You may wonder why people do this. Yes, besides the fun, it takes time, work, and money. The ultimate goal is, of course, to make money. The majority of the Koyote Kruisers’ income is generated from the yearly Show & Shine in June. Koyote Kruisers is a nonprofit
organization and all of the money is given back to the community of Winnemucca. It has given support in the way of scholarships or donations to Winnemucca Ministerial Association, Senior Center, Humboldt County Library, Humboldt County Schools RIF, Humboldt Hospice, Relay for Life and to various individuals who were in need of assistance for medical expenses. There is always a need and the Kruisers are happy to help out where they can. Another fundraiser that Koyote Kruisers help to support is the Wild Bunch Toy Drive in December. Toys, food, and money are donated and distributed to help out needy families in our community. This event benefits many Winnemucca residents. Koyote Kruisers meet on the third Wednesday of each month. We usually get together in a meeting room at a local restaurant. This is an opportunity for us to eat dinner out and visit, to share ideas and resources, and plan upcoming events. The next meeting will be announced in the Community Events in the Humboldt Sun or you may call Randy at 304-0060 or John at 304-0117. We have a good time, make new friends, and remember the past. Oh yes, we help others in our community. New members are always welcome.

A Yoga Experience
Managing stress in stressful situations is a learned skill. The majority of us are not born with the innate ability to keep our minds under control in times of chaos. Instead, quite the opposite occurs. Something unfortunate happens and our minds immediately kick in with habitual worries and we think the worst. Fears from the past are projected into the future. We are completely away from the moment at hand. Stories, thoughts and feelings become intermingled. They muddy the waters of the present moment. Our reactions are completely blown out of proportion, because we are reacting to exaggerated or false input. But how do we keep our fears in check. How do we stay present with exactly what is going on in the moment? How do we become part of the solution rather than exacerbating the problem? The practice of yoga and its principles can actually help us to stay in the moment and avoid overreaction. With practice, our new behavior becomes second nature. Basically, the practice of yoga enhances health and well-being by oxygenating, cleaning and massaging every cell in the body. It encourages self-care, including rest, nutrition and exercise. Yoga brings together body, mind and spirit. It addresses relationship with ‘self’ and with ‘other’.

Yoga encourages individual spiritual exploration and connection. The five Yamas or disciplines of yoga include: Nonviolence, Truthfulness, NonStealing, Moral Conduct, and Non-Greed. Yoga is not a religion per se, but it does encourage honorable and ethical thoughts and behavior. Hatha Yoga, which is what I practice and teach, encourages us to be fully mindful and in the present moment as we go through our physical exercises. Let’s take the Warrior poses as an example. Warrior II serves to center us in our own body. We connect with the earth and find our balance and strength through our legs and into our core. Our arms are raised and extended at shoulder height, but remain unstrained. Our gaze is gentle as we look over the fingertips of the arm reaching out in front of us. Our breath is deep and slow. We breathe from the center of our being and our breath nourishes us as we hold the pose. I like to have my students mentally place a challenge in front of themselves….something that bothers them. Each of us simply stays quietly present in the pose, facing whatever challenge we each have chosen for ourselves. The longer we stay in the pose, the more we recognize our own personal power. We learn to stay calm even under pressure. We don’t
move to change or destroy the challenge; we stay present in front of our adversary (even a mental one). We meet life face to face, accept it, and remain grounded in the very center of our being. From Warrior II, we move into Reverse Warrior. In this pose we allow our challenge to wash over us, by leaning back and raising our upper arm. Our solar plexus (third chakra) is exposed to whatever is in front of us. During this process, our job is to simply be present with the thoughts and feelings that may arise. We gain strength and determination. We take 5 to 10 deep breaths while holding each pose. We then, move into Warrior I. The legs stay in the same position. We rotate the torso by turning the hips and shoulders to face forward as much as possible. We then lift our arms overhead. This pose encourages us to meet life and its challenges from the heart center.
Our heart center teaches us that obstacles in life are simply reflections of our own inner fear and belief in limitations. We learn to not only stay present if front of challenges, but to stay present with an open heart. We learn to accept life as it is, and realize that when we remain present and focused, we not only survive, but thrive in life. We are no longer victims to be tossed about on the wave of life. I offer classes and private sessions in yoga and Stress Management techniques. I also use Hypnotherapy and Reiki to help folks reach personal goals and realize their inner strength. Please call 623-0922 if you would like to join a class, make an appointment, or simply chat about your concerns. Always consult your physician before beginning any new exercise program.

tips to help prevent eye & Vision problems while staring at a screen Contributed by Dr. Cody Bengoa, FCOVD My doctoral thesis project involved research and treatment of Computer Vision Syndrome, which affects up to 90% of people who stare at a screen (computer monitor, cell/smart phone, or hand-held video game) for more than 2 hours a day. Our eyes and bodies were not designed to sit and stare at near objects for hours at a time, but with so much of our modern world being spent doing such visually demanding tasks during leisurely and occupational activities, sometimes our eyes and vision suffer as a consequence. Here are some tips for both children and adults that can help prevent headaches, eyestrain, and vision problems while staring at a screen.

1. If you sit near a window, position your workstation so that the window is to your left or right. Windows in front or behind you can cause glare problems. 2. When staring at a screen, we blink about one-fifth as often as we do otherwise, so our eyes tend to become more dry. Remember to keep blinking when doing near work, and use over-the-counter artificial tears as needed for eye dryness. You may want to keep a bottle at your workstation to use whenever your eyes feel dry. 3. Remember the 20-20-20 rule of taking a visual break: every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. 4. Every 30 minutes, it’s also a good idea to stand up and stretch to prevent neck and back problems.
5. Setup your workstation correctly:
the center of your monitor should be 4-5 inches below eye level
your monitor should be 20-26 inches away your arms should be bent at a 90-100 degree angle to your keyboard
sit with your feet flat on the floor, knees bent at a 90 degree angle
6. See your eye doctor if you can’t see your screen clearly with good posture. Uncorrected farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism can prevent you from seeing the screen as you should. If your eyes don’t work well together or focus accurately on the screen, this may also affect your ability to see the screen. If you notice yourself or your child getting excessively close to the screen to be able to see it, this may be a sign of a vision problem. 7. An annual comprehensive vision and eye health exam can detect and treat vision conditions may otherwise prevent you from perform tasks as well as you should while starting at a screen. When I walk through the halls at Lowry, I see the faces of my classmates, most of whom I have known since well before we started school. One of the many things I have loved about growing up in a small town has been the limited number of schools, which has led to the inevitable forming of a bond between classmates. The same people that I have grown up with, aged with, and experienced more things than I can remember with will be the same people that I’ll be with at graduation. We have grown and matured together. We’ve had hardships and struggles but it has been with the help of one another that we’ve been able to move forward with our heads held high. The kindness, dignity, and ambition of the young adults in my class inspire me to be a better person each and every day. We owe these good qualities to the people who have influenced us in our lives. The positive role models that we look to for advice and wisdom have helped to mold our personalities and we’ve passed our lessons onto each other. We are the combined efforts of our parents, teachers, family, and friends. Without these people we would not have been able to achieve the success that we previously have and the success that’s sure to come. Lowry High School’s graduating class of 2014 is one of the most hard working and driven classes to ever grace the halls of Lowry High School. The seniors thrive in academics, excel in sports, and are always looking for ways to give back to the community of Winnemucca, which has supported us endlessly in our endeavors. Whether the graduates are college bound, heading to the military, or diving straight into the work force, our chances of success are sure to be high. As we near the end of our time in high school we plan for the future. Many of the graduating class will be heading to college in the Fall, and many of them have made big plans. Several students will be moving to San Luis Obispo, California to attend the California Polytechnic University. Students from the graduating class will also be attending Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and New York University in New York, New York. These are just a few examples of the many colleges and universities that will be receiving students from Lowry. Without the help of our parents and teachers who have sacrificed countless lunch breaks and afternoons, the success in our searches and acceptances into such prestigious colleges would not have been possible. Throughout the four years the class of 2014 has spent at Lowry they have advanced their athletic abilities tremendously. Practice doesn’t end when the season does for the Lowry athletes who work tirelessly, on the pursuit of greatness. The efforts of Lowry’s athletes have not been in vein and several students are going to college on athletic scholarships. The men of Lowry’s graduating class are bound for schools all over the country, from California, to Idaho, to Montana for football, basketball, or golf. Softball scholarships were also awarded to some of the graduating ladies. Looking back to our freshman year, I never could have imagined that the goofy kids we were would grow to become the driven and successful young adults we are today. Nothing makes me more proud than the progress that my class has made. No matter how many heartbreaks and struggles we’ve gone through and no matter how many times we have wanted to quit, we’ve pushed forward and look where it’s gotten us. We’re about to leave the comfort and shelter of our parent’s influence and enter the world outside of high school. Four years ago I looked at graduation as a burden, something that you didn’t want to do and something you weren’t even sure you could do. As I look at our class today, there’s not a doubt in my mind that we will succeed out there. When we’ve all received our diplomas, we’ll be able to smile at one another, knowing that it’s all been worth it. And in that moment, we will confidently be able to say, “we did it.”

Humboldt AVA-CASA What is CASA? Every day in this country, 1,900 children become victims of abuse or neglect, and four of them will die. Every day. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a network of 951 communitybased programs that recruit, train and support citizen-volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities. Volunteer advocates— empowered directly by the courts— offer judges the critical information they need to ensure that each child’s rights and needs are being attended to while in foster care or in at-risk environments.
Here locally, we are an amazing group of volunteers that help with difficult issues in our community. Here is some information on our services and causes: child abuse and neglect, bullying, sexual violence, relationship abuse, and stalking - including information on the National CASA program. Throughout the year, we will be selling I am for the Child awareness bracelets, CASA lanyards, and Scentsy products. Funds raised help us to provide direct services to those in need in our community, as well as go to the Foster Family Appreciation event this summer
Volunteers stay with children until they are placed in loving permanent homes. For many abused children, a CASA volunteer is the only constant adult presence in their lives.
to thank our foster families for all they do for children. All donations are tax-deductible and a receipt will be provided. The 2-in-1 CASA car/fridge/anywhere magnets and window clings can be purchased at Not Your Usual, Dairy Queen, Santa Rosa Collison, and Electric Beach. Orders for Scentsy can be taken at Electric Beach, with an AVACASA volunteer, or from the comfort of your own home by going to Sharon Krupicka's website and clicking on the AVA-CASA party link. http://skrupicka. scentsy.us
Would you like to become involved? You can volunteer, donate or join our movement. Please contact 623-2328 or 775-530-9310 or email humboldtava@sbcglobal.net to learn more.
