Marketing...Is it important? Warm weather has greeted us and spring is upon us. Are you starting to feel rejuvenated? Maybe you have decided to put your house on the market. Here are a few things you should know before you do. As always it is important to have your property clean and presentable, but it is just as important that you choose the real estate agent that can accommodate your needs in getting your house sold quickly. Questions to ask yourself in helping you decide: Does my agent know the area well? What about the current market? What tools does my agent currently have available to properly market my home? Is my agent currently utilizing an MLS? Does my agent have a solid marketing plan? Why is marketing so important? In today’s world, marketing plays a large part in getting your property sold. The more exposure a property has, the more competition it creates, which in return improves your opportunity to maximize on the sales price. With that in mind it takes the right tools in place to better market your house. One of the best marketing tools available is to have your property listed through an MLS, which syndicates with over 60+ websites, placing it in front of more eyes. The MLS is guaranteed to increase that exposure of your property to both the public eye and other real estate professionals. A few examples are RE/MAX.com, Realtor.com, and trulia.com… Check them out. Why use me?... As a RE/MAX Professional, I take very seriously the needs of my clients. I do utilize the MLS, I also have a vast referral network worldwide. All of my listings are placed on the Northern Nevada MLS which in turn syndicates these listings out to over 60 National and International Real Estate Websites. I go the extra mile to get your property sold. I strive to be the best agent for you. Stop by and see me, let’s talk.

Oh!!! And by the way…I am never too busy for your referral!!! RE/MAX Great Basin Realty Melissa Murphy Sales Agent 566 Hanson St. Suite 3 Winnemucca NV. 89445 Office 775-623-0500 Cell 775-304-4859 m.murphy@remax-gbrealty.com

Berry, Berry, {Wonderful} Summer is finally here with all of its pleasures. First on the scene are strawberries, followed by raspberries, blackberries, and other ephemeral fruits of the season.

Strawberry season It’s one of the earliest fruits of the season, a worthy leader for all the summer fruits to come, and very popular in so many ways – from eating out of hand, to elaborate formulations.

Choosing strawberries Choose (or pick) strawberries that are fully red, absent of green or white coloration. Once picked, strawberries will not continue to ripen. Note the condition of the green leaves of the strawberry, the hull, the greener and fresher looking the better. The leaves are the first to deteriorate. Excellent strawberries will have a lovely fragrance – give them the smell test.

California produces about 75% of the commercial strawberry crop with a second position going to Florida.

Storing Strawberries Store strawberries in the refrigerator, unwashed, until ready to use. Place berries on a paper towel handling gently. Place paper towels between layers of strawberries.

Washing Strawberries Strawberries are like efficient little sponges – they absorb water to their detriment, so rinse, drain, and pat-dry quickly. Wash strawberries witht the hull on (the green leaves); this prevents water from entering the hollow center of the strawberry.

Remove the cap of green leaves with a strawberry huller. (Using a knife often removes too much of the luscious red flesh). A rather recent favorite tool of ours is the StemGem®. The thumb plunger operates a “claw” that quickly and effectively removes the hull while easily adjusting to different sizes of berries.

to eat them with strawberries, though really they go nicely with any kind of fruit.

1-1/2 pints (500g) strawberries, hulled & halved
 1 cup sugar
 Grated zest of 1 orange
 3 1/2 cups (450g) all purpose flour
 4 tsp. baking powder
 Pinch of salt
7 tbsp. (100g) cold butter, (cut into chunks)
 1 cup (250) heavy cream
 2 large eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 375° F (190° C). Put the strawberries into a big bowl and toss with 1/4 cup (50g) of the sugar and the orange zest. Let stand for 30 minutes.

In a food processor, combine the flour, baking powder, the remaining 3/4 cup (150g) sugar, and the salt.

Fresh Whipped Cream Strawberry shortcakes would seem incomplete without a generous dollop of sweetened whipped cream. Avoid the canned and frozen Pulse briefly to combine. Then add the butter. Pulse to incorporate it.
In a jug, whisk 1/2 cup (125g) of the cream with the eggs & vanilla, and add that to the butter-flour mixture.

Pulse a few times, until the dough just about sticks together. The secret to a tender & light cake is knowing when to stop mixing (really).

With a well-greased scoop (I use a measuring cup.). Make 6 balls from the slightly sticky dough. Tap your scoop or dough falls out. Place the mounds far apart: they’ll rise a lot!

Bake the shortcake for 12 to 14 minutes, until golden. Meanwhile, whip the remaining cream until soft peaks form. Let the shortcakes cool on a rack, then split them in half & fill with whipped cream and a generous scoop of the macerated strawberries -- ah!

imposters and whip up fresh cream. It’s too easy not to, and tastes infinitely better! We prefer whipped cream that’s not too sweet, and one that features a hint of vanilla. For every cup of heavy cream, add one tablespoon of sugar, and one teaspoon of vanilla extract. The key to successful whipping is well-chilled cream and chilled utensils. Choose a deep, narrow bowl, and one of these four methods:

By Hand: If you have a small quantity to whip and a strong arm, a whisk and vigorously beating works well.

Electric Mixer: Begin on low speed, increase as the cream thickens. Take care not to over whip and make butter.

Immersion Blender: Very fast and effective, a hand-blender whips cream into soft peaks quickly

Pressurized Dispenser: Powered by NO2 cartridges, add cream, shake and dispense in whipped form.

Summer Berry Pudding

4 Servings

Recipe from Home Made Summer by Yvette van Boven.

Take Out Orders!

1038 Grass Valley Road, Winnemucca Tues-Sat: 11:30-2:30pm & 5-8:30pm. All-you-can-eat is served on Wednesdays.

This charming berry pudding is a no-bake desert that clearly says “summer.” With sliced bread lining the bowl, juicy, sweetened berries are placed in the middle. A few hours later, or overnight, the bread becomes infused with the berry juices, and the inner fruit compote thickens. It’s reminiscent of molten lava cakes, where the insides spill from the center in a graceful and most delicious fashion. The alluring berry-colored mound makes a dramatic presentation.

In “Home Made Winter” I gave you the winter version of this pudding, but this is the original. You can use any combination of about 3 1/2 pints (1.25 kg) mixed berries, but this is my favorite combination.

1 pint (300 g) fresh strawberries, hulled and halved (big ones quartered)
2/3 pint (250 g) fresh blackberries
1/3 pint (100 g) fresh red currants
1-1/2 pints (500 g) fresh raspberries
3/4 cup plus 2 tbsp. (175 g) superfine sugar
3 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
7 square slices stale white bread
Crème fraîche or sour cream for serving

Keeping the strawberries separate, wash the berries and carefully pat them dry with a paper towel.

In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and lemon juice and bring to a gentle boil. Cook until the sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally.

Add all the fruit except the strawberries and boil for 3 minutes tops, stirring, until the berries are soft and release their juices.

Place a sieve over a bowl and pour in the fruit. Reserve the fruit and the juices.

Line a 2-cup (500-ml) pudding mold with plastic wrap, letting the plastic overhang the sides. Remove the crust from 5 of the bread slices. Halve them lengthwise. Cut out a circle from the sixth slice to match the size of the bottom of the pudding mold.

Dip each cut slice of bread for 1 second in the fruit juice you collected in the bowl and use the slices to line the mold, the rectangular slices for the sides, the circle for the bottom.

Stir the strawberries into the rest of the fruit and fill the mold with the fruit.

Cut out a circle from the last slice of bread to match the size of the open top of the mold, dip it into the fruit juice, and use it to cover the pudding. Pull the plastic

Removing Berry Stains

Whether on your hands or countertops, berry stains are easily

removed when tended to quickly. Rinse the stain with cool water before it dries. Regular soap or detergent will take care of most stains. A little lemon juice may help to loosen a stain (if the wrap over the top of the pudding and place something heavy directly onto the pudding. (I have a saucer that fits perfectly and I put a can of beans on top of that.) Place in the fridge overnight, or for at least 6 or 7 hours.

Strain the remaining fruit syrup and save it in a little pitcher in the refrigerator.

Before serving, open up the plastic and place a large plate on top of the mold. Holding the plate onto the mold, invert the pudding onto the plate. Lift off the mold and remove the plastic wrap.

Serve summer pudding in wedges, with crème fraîche or sour cream and some of the fruit syrup.

Cookbook Review

surface can handle lemon juice). To minimize finger staining, rub a little olive oil on your hands – as though putting on hand cream – this creates a film that prevents the berries from staining the skin.

Macerating

Many berry desserts involve “macerating the berries.” Macerating simply means

softening the berries by coaxing juices from the berries. Simply sprinkling sugar on top of washed berries, gently folded in a with a few turns, and allowing them to set for a few minutes will result in softened berries and exuded sweet juices. Through the cellular process of osmosis, the sugar draws water from the berries in an attempt to equalize the density of fluids inside and outside of the berry.

Freezing Berries

When the bounty of berries arrives, save some for later by freezing them.

It’s not the same as fresh, but the next best thing. Wash, pat dry, then air dry the berries. Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Once, frozen, transfer into a freezer-quality zipper bag.

Home Made Summer by Yvette van Boven. Photography by Oof Verschuren. Copyright 2013. Published by Abrams Books, a division of Stewart, Tbori & Chang, New York, NY.

We dare you to pick up this book and not giggle as you read through it. The author imparts a joie de vivre through her words, illustrations, and recipes that can only result in smiles and satisfied appetites. Inspired by her multi-cultural life, she admits that this collection of summer repasts hails primarily from summers spent in Provence, France, an aura that delightfully adds to the book’s ambience. Ms. Van Boven chose recipes for this seasonal book based on preparation ease, and dishes appropriate for sharing with others during long summer evenings. The book is organized, more or less, by time of day: Breakfast, Brunch & Lunch, Tea Time, Drinks, To Start, Main Courses, and Dessert – it’s a template for any number of perfect summer days. The handwritten sections and clever line drawings instruct and amuse. It’s a lovely blueprint for the season ahead in so many ways.

Boiling water in the microwave can cause explosions. Not an action movie explosion with flames and slow motion, but an explosion nonetheless. Heating water in the microwave in a clean ceramic or glass container can prevent bubbles from forming. Bubbles help cool the water down. Without bubbles, water gets heated beyond its boiling point. When this “superheated” water is disturbed, say you move the container or drop something into it, the heat is violently released.

Well, Frederick Osius was working on improving the blender when he went to Warning for some much needed investment capital. Osius chose Warning because the maestro had an ulcer and one of the meals prescribed by his doctor was pureed raw vegetables.

Home appliances save us a bunch of time, a bunch of energy, and a bunch of money. Of course, after they’re installed all we really care about is whether or not they work properly. We seldom ever take the time to really get to know our appliances, their history, and their inner workings.

The garbage disposal has been making appliance repair men rich. They have John W. Hammes to thank for all those plugged up appliances. Hammes invented the garbage disposal in 1927 for his wife (apparently she didn’t want a vacuum cleaner). He spent a decade refining his invention before starting his own garbage disposal business. The name of his company? The In-Sink-Erator Manufacturing Company.

Therefore, we have compiled 10 interesting facts about 10 common household appliances; air conditioner, blender, clothes dryer, dishwasher, freezer, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator, washing machine and of course the greatest appliance of all-time, the George Foreman Grill. Hopefully our 10 facts will give you some useless trivia to dispense the next time you’re at a cocktail party.

This may sound sexist, but the washing machine was one of the key components of women’s liberation. Well, at least that’s the opinion of L’Ossovatore Romano (the Vatican newspaper). Their opinion was backed by a University of Montreal study. With the advent of the washing machine, women had more time to enter the workforce. Of course, I think women’s liberation had more to do with their intelligence, wisdom and talent.

Today’s dishwashers can be traced all the way back to Josephine Cochrane’s 1886 handpowered machine. Her creation made its debut at the 1893 Chicago’s World’s Fair. Cochrane’s invention had nothing to do with saving time or protecting her subtle hands. You see, Cochrane, as the granddaughter of John Fitch, the inventor of the steamboat, was filthy rich. She had never washed a dirty dish in her life. Cochrane only invented the modern dishwasher because her servants kept chipping her fine china.

Boxer George Foreman had nothing to do with the George Foreman grill, although you had probably guessed that already. In 1994, he was hired as their spokesman. His healthy lifestyle as a boxer was conducive with the grills claim of fat reducing cooking. As a pitch man, Foreman’s infomercials were so popular that the company, Russell Hobbs Inc., decided to put his name on the product (after giving him a hefty check). The actual appliance was invented by Michael Boehm. Since 1994, the Foreman Grill has sold more than 100 million units.

1

Here is an air conditioning fact that’s probably known by every appliance repair man. Willis Carrier invented the first modern electrical air conditioning unit in 1902. Carrier invented his air conditioner unit to help improve the manufacturing process at his Syracuse, New York printing plant. His invention was such a huge success that he formed the Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America to meet the rising demand for his chilly-air-making machines.

In the 1920’s Freon was introduced as the cooling agent in refrigerators. Freon is actually the brand name of a product invented by the DuPont Company. Technically speaking, it’s an organic compound called chlorofluorocarbon that contains carbon, chlorine and fluorine.

This may shock you, but the first clothes dryer was a rope stretched between two trees and the sun. In 1892, George T. Sampson improved on that simple design with a device that used heat from a wood stove to dry clothes. The electric tumble dryer we’ve come to know and love first appeared in the early 20th century.

Re-elect

Sheriff Ed Kilgore

I have been thinking about what I vowed to achieve as your Sheriff. A few of the key things were building relationships with other agencies, mutual aid and enhanced public safety. It is humbling to see how far our agency has come in the past 7 years. The best thing is that we didn’t do this alone; it was a combined effort from all entities and we have all benefited from it.

When I took office, inter-agency relationships were fractured to say the least and there was minimal cooperative effort. The TRIDENT task force was the only organized multiagency division. On a local level however, Officers, Deputies and department heads weren’t talking and working together effectively. I organized a meeting with key public safety stakeholders from our local agencies in addition to Lander and Pershing County Sheriff’s offices. The most important thing was to open up lines of communication. We identified what the needs of each agency were and what assets each agency had that could be utilized by others. We also discussed the need for cooperation between agencies to enhance the quality and timeliness of response to the citizens we serve. This meeting was the start of requesting mutual aid assistance from neighboring communities during critical incidents or crimes in progress. Rural Nevada is so large and no one agency can complete the mission on its' own. Our county alone is over 10,000 square miles. If we don't all work together, everyone loses. We rely on these formed relationships now, daily. Once the management began working together, everyone’s staff bonded and the trust of one another began to grow and strengthen. These close working relationships come full circle in the following examples of how important it is to use our combined resources. When we found our first marijuana grow on public land in 2009, we called on Washoe County and the State of Nevada to assist us in eradication efforts. We utilized Washoe County’s helicopter to remove the marijuana. This saved our county hundreds of man hours because without it, we would have had to hike the loads in and out, approximately 4 miles. In 2010, Pershing County requested the assistance of our Special Response Team after they were fired upon

by a barricaded man in the Star Peak area north of Unionville. In 2013, another formal request from Pershing County was made to our agency and we responded to a residence south of Sonoma Ranch on a domestic violence call involving weapons. We arrived on the scene together as the closest Pershing Deputy was responding from Imlay. Their next closest Deputy was responding from Lovelock. The I-80 incident in July of last year was probably Humboldt County’s worst traffic accident in history. The dust storm that swept over the interstate brought visibility to zero and 28 vehicles were involved in the accident with one fatality. Along with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, responding agencies included Nevada Highway Patrol, Winnemucca Police Department, Humboldt County EMS, Winnemucca Volunteer Fire Department, Winnemucca Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, Pershing County Fire Department, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Nevada Department of Transportation, Lander County Sheriff’s Office, Lander County EMS, and Nevada Department of Corrections. In this situation, the closest responding agency was the Winnemucca Police Department. We all worked together in a coordinated effort to secure the scene and with a commitment toward one goal; to save lives. The examples listed are probably the most severe. However, due to our having professional and trusting working relationships with other agencies we have had success during these emergency situations. It also shows that mutual aid doesn’t come with a price tag, because we all help each other in times of crisis and if one life can be saved, it’s worth it. Public safety department heads are constantly working together to save each county tax payer dollars. We have offered and received free training from other agencies, in addition to carpooling to out of town training. At a Sheriff’s meeting, Lander County Sheriff Ron Unger and I split the cost of expenses by sharing a room. Chief Silva and the Sheriffs of both Lander and Pershing County including myself, have all traveled to trainings and meetings with each other. Locally, Chief Silva and I regularly ride in the parades together

and co-host trainings. The Humboldt County EMS has provided training and equipment to all area law enforcement. These are examples of management’s commitment to mutual aid which is saving the tax payers money, promoting working relationships with staff, and keeping us up to date about events, trainings and ongoing investigations that may impact all of us. Mutual aid and public safety largely apply to search and rescue as well. When I took office in 2007, there was no organized Search and Rescue program. I hired Tom Casey as my Special Programs Director and by June, we had an organized program with over fifty members. Most members were new and not experienced but were eager to learn and wanted to help. Now, they are a well-trained team that gets requested all over the state and has also been assisted by Lander County, Elko County and Washoe County search and rescue units. Other examples of cooperation between agencies extends to fire and medical professionals as well. I believe it is a great step forward for not only public safety entities but also the citizens of the county’s involved. Mutual aid gives departments the availability of additional help and resources without additional costs. We are able to have access to these resources in a timely fashion and its providing the best use of public funds. Having these working partnerships are providing community benefits in both everyday life and during major incidents. I haven’t listed all the times we have helped or been helped by others. I could go on and on about what each agency has done for one another. However, this gives you a few examples of my ability to build alliances and further cooperation with other agencies. I have worked hard to establish strong ties with all first responders and management staff. I have a real personal regard for the people I serve and will continue to work hard for the next four years as your Sheriff.

Let's Visit the Wonders of Asia Contributed by Pat and Pam of Just Right Cruises 623-9074

Well, it’s already May and here we are again! For this month’s issue of Everything Winnemucca we are heading to Asia. Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent. This being said--don’t freak out. Asia has some of the most beautiful and exotic places on earth. As you most likely have figured out if you have been following my travel spotlight, I am into the cruising aspect of travel. Not to say that I will not go on a land vacations, both types of travel has its rewards. I have to say if you are an adventurist you will use both means of travel. Now on to Asia! Via cruising we are going to cover some awesome cruise itineraries. There are several cruise lines that go to and around Asia. Cruise itineraries start with a 4-day to a 62day Asia and Africa Grand Adventure. Asia covers a large area of earth, and there are 49 countries within Asia. So I don’t think you will run out of things to do or see. There are also cruise tours (both land and sea) and of course, land tour vacations. You may visit beautiful places like Otaru, a city and port in Shiribeshi, Hokkaido, Japan. It is hard to believe that when night falls, there are places

where oil lamps on cobbled streets are lit, and the town evokes a gentle, nostalgic mood. There are many fine eateries and wonderful dining throughout Asia. Many of its historical buildings, restaurants and shops are within easy walking distance. You can also find cruises going to the big cities like Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Bangkok, or head off to countries like Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia. Let’s talk a little bit about Hong Kong. Hong Kong is located in China and is situated on China's south coast. The population of Hong Kong is over seven million people, and is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Hong Kong also offers the traveler quite a variety of things to do. Build a modern city on an ancient civilization, put it at an intersection of cultures, and you get a place that is truly worth exploring. Dive into a festival, hike a mountain trail, catch a show, visit a temple, explore a walled village, or go check out the Chi Lin Nunnery and the Nan Lian Gardens. If you are into ancient Chinese architecture and Buddhist art and peace, then the nunnery is a must, the building is

beautiful. The nunnery is an actual Buddhist place of worship, sadly you will not be able to take pictures or video, as it is prohibited. You may wish to visit other destinations in Hong Kong such as Victoria Peak (The Peak). Here you will see Hong Kong in all of its beauty, and is Hong Kong's number one tourist destination. It features the Peak Tower and the Peak Tram, the city's oldest mode of public transport. Now let’s head over to Lantau Island, the home to the Tian Tan Buddha (or "Giant Buddha") statue, once the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statue, it is 85 feet tall! Lantau Island is the largest island in Hong Kong. Now of course, there is much more to do in and around Hong Kong. There are plenty of land tours to great places in China like Beijing, Tianjin, or Xian. A must see - The Terracotta Warriors of Xian the warriors and horses are from the 3rd century and are dedicated to the protection of the emperor in his afterlife. The emperor that I am referring to is China’s first emperor in or around the year of 210 BC, and his name was Qin Shi Huang. This is known as funerary art and is used all over the world going as far back as the Neanderthals over 50,000 years ago. It is hard to believe that this was found only a short time ago by local farmers in 1974. So, if you are thinking of a vacation to Hong Kong it would be best to go over your itineraries with your travel advisors. It would take a lifetime to write about all there is to see and do in China.

Now before I go on, I just want to mention that 90% of all travel destinations in today’s world are full of people or shops with tons of travel memorabilia or keepsakes to sell you, and Marble Mountain is no exception. So my point is this, if you want to see some of the most awesome places on Earth you will need to learn to say “No Thanks” and keep walking, and you will become a savvy traveler.

Princess cruises lines is offering a 25-Day Grand Asia Pacific Crossing cruise on The Sapphire Princess, departing from Los Angeles on the 18th of May, with fares starting from only $2,499.00, and this is the only sailing. Now, this is why Pam and I at Just Right Cruises land and sea vacations will always tell you that you will get more bang for your buck on a cruise and the food is great! We know that you can't get everywhere on a cruise ship and that is why we offer land packages as well.

Ok other areas of interest would be My Son; Imperial City, Hue; Son Tra Peninsula; and Muse of Cham Sculpture. Da Nang also has some very beautiful beaches with white sand and blue sea water that you may not want to miss either. Asia is a very large area and as time goes on we will cover other areas to travel in Asia. There are many, many land tours and cruise itineraries available, and it would be best to speak with a traveler advisor to help you plan your trip.

So, let's go visit Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo is the capitol of Japan and was originally a small fishing village named Edo, which means "estuary" (where two types of waters meet, i.e., the mouth of a river meeting the ocean). Now Tokyo is one busy place and offers the traveler plenty to do. It is a far cry from the small fishing village it once was. Tokyo now boasts a population of 13.23 million, give or take one or two. What is there to do in Tokyo? You should definitely see the Sky Tree - the second tallest structure in the world sitting at a height of 2080 feet and the observatory is at a height of 1480 feet with a café. Maybe you don't care for tall structures? So maybe you would enjoy seeing the oldest temple in Tokyo. If so, you will want to see the Sensoji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple completed in 645 C.E. (A.D.)

Let's go back to Japan and check out Kobe, Japan. Kobe is a port city and is the sixth largest city in Japan, and is also home to the world famous Kobe beef! It is full of things to do and see and one of the coolest things I can think of, and it should be on your bucket list is the Kobe Luminaire. It's purpose was to provide some joy to the citizens who were depressed and downtrodden. It has since become a tradition in Kobe and the illuminations are definitely Japan's most impressive. Now, you can only see this spectacular luminaire from December 1 to 12. In the past, you could see this until Christmas, but in order to conserve energy and cut costs it is now less than two weeks long. If you want to go see the Kobe Luminaire, you will have to have perfect timing of your vacation plans.

It is a place of peace for the Japanese people.

But wait! There is much more. You can spend some time visiting the Sorakuen Garden - a beautiful Japanese garden. The garden used to be part of the residence of Kodera Kenkichi, a former mayor of Kobe. It was opened to the public in 1941 and it is in

Ok let’s move south and check out Da Nang, Vietnam - a port city located in the South Central Coast area of Vietnam. Da Nang is a laid-back city with awesome food. Culinary tours are available,

24

which are hugely popular way to experience literal local flavor. Did you know that three-quarters of Vietnam's territory consist of mountains and hills and the main religious tradition is Buddhism? So you know there will be great temples and deep history. Da Nang has seven temples that you can see with ease. These temples are an active place of worship. One temple that is a must see is the Cao Dai Temple. Here is something very interesting about the Cao Dai temple, the Caodaists meaning, "Way of the Highest Power", believe that all religions are ultimately the same so the Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Muhammad and Confucius, in addition to Joan of Arc and Julius Cesar, are all honored at this temple. Another place that you may want to put on your wish list of places to see while visiting Da Nang is The Marble Mountains. They are located just south of Da Nang, and are a cluster of five mountains. In Vietnamese they are called, Ngũ Hành Sơn - "Five element mountains - Kim (metal), Thuy (water), Moc (wood), Hoa (fire) and Tho (earth).

the center of Kobe. Now call me crazy, but Kobe Japan has one of the best Chinatowns in Asia, maybe the entire world. The name of this very popular Chinatown is called Nankinmachi. After the port was opened to foreign trade in 1868, it was developed by Chinese merchants who settled near Kobe Port. It is a wonderful place to spend some time at. You can also find great food and shops – so it is a win win. I really want to cover another city in Japan that offers some great places to visit. Nara Japan is about 38 miles from Kobe. Why am I taking you to Nara? Because there is a temple that is a must see if you visit this area of Asia. The grounds of Horyuji (Horyu Temple) house the world's oldest surviving wooden structures, conveying images of Japan as it existed more than 1300 years ago, during the Asuka Period (A.D.mid 6th-beginning of 8th c.). According to records, the emperor Yomei vowed to build a temple and an image of a Buddha as a form of prayer for his own recovery from illness. A vow he was never fated to fulfill, for he died shortly thereafter. Japan has very beautiful architecture and it shows an influence from the Chinese. The Temples and Japanese landscape gardens are a pleasure to visit. Another place to visit before you leave Napa is the Tōdai-ji, it is a Buddhist temple complex, also located in the city of Nara. Its Great Buddha Hall, houses the world's largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana, known in Japanese simply as Daibutsu. The monastery-temple Todaiji was founded by Emperor Shomu (r.724-749) when Nara was the capital of Japan. It was the head temple of the network of provincial monasteries throughout Japan. By the time the Buddha was completed in 751, it had consumed most of Japan's bronze production for several years and left the country almost bankrupt. Outside the Daibutsuden at the bottom of the steps, don't miss the bronze Octagonal Lantern, one of the oldest treasures in Todaiji — it dates from the original 8th-century temple. The lantern's support post is inscribed with a Buddhist text on the merits of lighting lanterns. You will want to take in as much as you can - it is one of the world’s greatest places to visit. Now all you need to do is think about when and how you want to go to this beautiful part of the world - by land or by sea - either way this is a trip of a lifetime. Here is important information – It is the job of your travel agent/advisor to make sure they advise clients of any areas that may be risky or unsafe. We cannot tell you what to do, we can only advise you. Therefore, I was going to cover Bangkok in this issue of Everything Winnemucca, however at this time there is a TRAVEL WARNING of Civil Unrest/Protests in and around the city of Bangkok. As a travel service we would advise our clients to stay away until a better time. Until next time may you stay well and travel safe.

10 Spring Fashion Myths Contributed by Kateri’s Karma Fashion has so many rules! You should never wear tights with open-toed shoes. How about you wear tights with those open-toed shoes? Never wear socks with sandals. It’d be so cute if you paired some colorful socks with those strappy sandals. Never wear a belt over your shirt—that’s so ‘80s. Wear a belt over your shirt—the wider the belt, the better; it’ll make you look thin. It’s enough to give even the savvy-est of fashionistas the run-around!

Rules were made to be broken. Here are 10 myths about springtime fashion that you can un-learn! • The “no white before Memorial Day and no white after Labor Day” rule is probably the most well-known and strictly followed rule. But why? Today, you don’t have to be a bride to wear white before Memorial Day. • Suede is generally considered a cold-weather fabric. But there is no reason you can’t pull out the suede in spring. Springtime usually brings with it some varied weather. One day it might be warm and mild; the next it’s blustery and cool. Suede is the perfect material for this changing weather. A light suede jacket keeps you comfortable when it’s chilly but peels off easily when it’s warm. And don’t forget about suede accessories. Sandals, clutches and even wrist cuffs always work. The only warning about suede—don’t wear it head to toe. Just one piece at a time and you’ll be good to go. • You’ve all heard it—Don’t mix patterns! Well why the heck not? If you want to stand out, mixing dots and stripes or plaids and paisleys is the way to go. A word of warning, though. It’s very easy to mix patterns and wind up looking like a circus clown. No matter how many patterns you wear, keep them in the same color family. • Lately, colorful outfits decorate the runways, adding a sense of whimsical fun. Some people are wary of mixing bright colors because they think they’ll clash. Two key notes—don’t wear too many colors at once and be sure to balance them out with neutral accessories. • Maxi dresses are popular again this spring and summer, which is good because their comfortable, flowing and they cover a multitude of sins while still looking feminine and pretty. If you are petite, consider pairing it with platform wedges to give you some height. • Pantyhose are the enemy of most working women. Older women tend to feel that pantyhose are necessary. Younger women are comfortable going bare-legged. So who is right? If the dress code at your office is formal, pantyhose or a nice pair of black tights in the winter are advisable. If your office is more casual, you can probably get away with going bare-legged with a nice pair of pumps or flats. • Many women are afraid to wear bold floral patterns for fear of looking like Grandmas couch or some unfortunate wallpaper. Florals have come a long way. They don’t have to be big, bold and overwhelming. You can find subtle flowery prints or keep it simple

with a cardigan decorated with small rosettes. And scientists tell us that floral prints and bold colors give us a mental boost. • Boots typically are a winter accessory. And although we do advise against wearing really furry boots once winter is over, you can rock another pair of boots, bare-legged with a fun sundress! • Spring is an odd, in-between time for your wardrobe. It’s still a bit too cold to bring out the summer clothes, and a bit too warm for winter clothes. The solution? Mix and match—layer it up! Grab your favorite sundress and pair it with a cardigan and some boots. Be creative! • You don’t have to put that glitter away just because winter is over. Not only can you wear sequins in the spring, but you can even wear them during the day. Pick one sequin piece, don’t wear sequins all over. Maybe a cute sequined blazer paired with jeans or a dress with sequins. The best fashion rule to follow—is to be completely comfortable in anything you are wearing. If you need help choosing the right size jeans to wear, or are looking for a cute spring dress for graduation—stop by Kateri’s Karma. And remember, we understand that budgets are tight and always have layaway available for you!

Fire up the Barbecue with help from the Pampered Chef Contributed by Lee Ann Morrell, Independent Consultant for the Pampered Chef

Smoky Beer Can Chicken with Potato Wedges Serves 8

1 1/2 lbs (700 g) russet potatoes (6 potatoes), cut into 1/2-in. (1-cm) wedges 3 tbsp (45 mL) Smoky Applewood Rub, divided 2 1/2 tbsp (37 mL) canola oil, divided 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and coarsely ground black pepper 1 whole broiler-fryer chicken (3 1/2-4 lbs/1.6-1.8 kg), neck and giblets discarded 1 can (12 oz/350 mL) beer 1. Prepare grill for indirect cooking over medium heat. Combine potatoes, 1/2 tbsp (7 mL) of the rub, 1 1/2 tbsp (22 mL) of the oil, salt and black pepper in Stainless (4-qt./4-L) Mixing Bowl; toss to coat and set aside. 2. Combine 1 1/2 tbsp (22 mL) of the rub and remaining 1 tbsp (15 mL) oil in (1-cup/250-mL) Prep Bowl; stir until blended. Trim excess fat from chicken, if necessary. Loosen skin from breast and thigh portions of chicken (see Cook’s Tip). Spread rub mixture evenly under skin of chicken. Sprinkle outside of chicken with remaining 1 tbsp (15 mL) rub. 3. Attach can holder to BBQ Roasting Pan. Pour out about one-fourth of the beer from can to provide space for drippings. Place beer can in can holder of roasting pan. Place chicken over can holder so that the can is upright in the cavity of the chicken. Arrange potatoes around chicken. 4. Place roasting pan on grid of grill. Grill, covered, 60-75 minutes or until internal temperature of chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) in thickest part of breast, carefully rotating pan once during grilling using Silicone Oven Mitt and stirring potatoes occasionally using BBQ Slotted Spoon. Lavender

"Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together." - T homas D ekker

Contributed by Kat Hall

Two things we really don't give enough credit on how much effect they have on our day to day lives -

Stress and Sleep!

Managing stress and getting enough sleep are important when aiming for a healthy lifestyle. Lavender is known for its many calming properties and is the most widely used essential oil in the world. It takes over 60 pounds of lavender flower tops to produce just 16 oz of doterra's therapeutic-grade essential oil. Lavendar has many more uses than it is known for! Check out these 35 uses for the home, cooking, and body & mind.

Stressed? Lavender is known as the “calming” oil and is often used to assist in balancing

Home 1. Chase Away Stagnant Closet Air. You know that smell. Fabrics of all variety, shoes for every occasion, plus a dirty clothes bin and no fresh air can only equal one thing…you need lavender essential oil. Whether diffused, drizzled on earthen ware, or dripped on cotton balls, chase stagnancy away! 2. Take the Bite Out of It. Insects, creepies and crawlies are not too fond of the smell of lavender. In fact, they hate it. If you forget to go the prevention route, lavender soothes bites, itching and inflammation. 3. A Multi-Purpose Spray. Next time you are sitting in traffic, pull out a spray bottle filled with a lavender and water mixture and freshen your car. Who wouldn’t prefer a car smelling like lavender? 4. Kids Won’t Go Down? Lavender drops on their pillows … it’s like magic. It will help ease their mind, calm them down, make bedtime a bit more rewarding, and best of all … lull them into a restful sleep. 5. Skip the Aerosol Chemical Sprays. Next time you are deodorizing the bathroom, think of lavender and water in a spray bottle. Lavender’s antibacterial, antibiotic, antiviral, antiseptic properties can only help. 6. Take the Acrid Out of Vinegar. If you clean with vinegar, but can barely stay vertical while using it, lavender is the answer. Just add lavender and vinegar together in the spray bottle and you’re set! 7. Therapeutic Dish or Laundry Soap. If your liquid soap smells a bit flat, you can add lavender for additional aromatherapy benefits and antibacterial properties. It transforms your cleaning experience! 8. Lovable Linens. What does your linen closet smell like? Probably cotton. Maybe old cotton. Energize your linens with lovely smelling lavender. It leaves no oil marks and leaves things invigoratingly fresh.

the body.

9. Lavender candles. Ahhh the long lost art of candle making. If you’ve ever made candles you know how fun it can be. When you add lavender, the smell that is released is intensely therapeutic! 10. Wood Floors, Like New. A tired wood floor is, well … tired. Commercial floor polishes often contain harsh chemicals. Woods love oil. Just add lavender to your cleaning system and your floor can look like new!

11. Help That Trusty Ball Cap. A well-worn, much loved ball cap can look great, but smell like a wild animal. Add 4-5 drops of lavender to make it bearable. It will be your favorite hat if you have a headache too!

12. Change Your Sheets, Refresh Your Mattress. Unfortunately, your mattress can be neglected, and have that “wires, foam and fabric” smell. Add lavender when you change your sheets and neglect no more!

23. Soak Away Stress. Your muscles are tight. Anxiety and deadlines are eating at you. Your heart is racing. Where’s the pressure release valve? Right here, with lavender. Add to a warm bath, soak it in, soothe.

13. Homemade Room Freshener. Put baking soda and a 5-6 drops of lavender oil in a small Mason jar. Punch holes in the lid. Place in smelly areas (near garbage can, dirty clothes), shake jar often. Smile.

24. Let Vapor Talk. Wet your hair in the shower. Add 4 drops of lavender to a handful of water and work it into your hands and hair. Tilt your head down, under the water and capture the aroma instilled vapor as it melts off your hands and hair. You’ll love how it smells, and how your hair feels!

14. Pet Smells No More. Add a skiff or two of your baking soda and lavender mixture to carpets and vacuum up! If you have pets, (especially the un potty trained variety), fight back with lavender! 15. Extra Potpourri Mileage. If you have a pot of potpourri, that has seen its day, try refreshing it with a few drops of lavender essential oil. You’ll love the way lavender can change the feel of your home! 16. Sweet Smelling Vacuum Bags. Your vacuum can be your nemesis when it comes to keeping your home smelling clean. As you well know, it can even blow microfine dirt! Pin some cotton balls (soaked in lemon and lavender oils) on the inside of the bag and let your vacuum blow!

Cooking & Food Lavender is one of the most versatile and soothing of all essential oils. Because dōTERRA oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®, you can be assured that they make a delightful companion to many types of food! Think of the possibilities … 17. Soften Citrus Flavors. Use in delicate lemon sauces for chicken or fish or in powerful orange marmalades, citrus salads, real lemonade and more! 18. Amazing Marinades and BBQ. Baste chicken or fish on the grill with honey or a garlic and rosemary blend, spread over roasted vegetables, marinade chicken pieces in honey and lavender, yum! 19. Bake Like the Best. Lavender is a nice addition to lavender blueberry banana bread, lemon lavender cookies, baked salmon, lavender sugar cookies, lavender muffins, lavender cakes, oh yeah! 20. Give Your Sugars a Delightful Twist. Use as a substitute for vanilla extract (in creams, custards and sugars), use it in lavender icing, add to honey for extra flavor in tea or toast, and even maple syrup!

Body & Mind 21. The Oatmeal Secret. Fill a baby food jar with oatmeal, and add 5-8 drops of lavender oil. When it’s time to wash your face, add water and it becomes an excellent natural scrub! A little goes a long way. 22. Rub a Dub Dub. Rather than using regular soap and warm water at baby’s bath time, add about five drops of lavender oil to the warm water. Your tot’s skin will be pampered and smell great!

25. Target Acne, at the Source. Bacteria thrive in sebaceous glands that over produce sebum…that waxy stuff that can be associated with acne. Lavender helps balance sebum and control break outs. 26. Minor Burns, Major Relief. When you’ve slightly overdone it in the sun, a little lavender oil is helpful in preventing peeling skin. It aids in your skin’s healing without scarring as well! 27. Boo Boo Relief. Lavender has disinfecting properties. It’s great for the skin, and wonderful for relief from cuts and scrapes, especially if the cut or scrape is located wherever it’s difficult to keep covered. 28. Alleviate Feelings of Earaches. You can warm lavender (don’t scald it), mix with olive oil and gently massage around the ears (not in the ears) and near glands in the throat. 29. A Dry Climate Answer. If you suffer from dry, itchy skin, and don’t want to mess around with chemical smelling lotions, add lavender to fractionated coconut oil and comfort will be yours! 30. Horrific Heels & Foot Fatigue. If you’ve been wearing sandals all summer, and your heels look like the Atacama Desert, 6 drops of lavender in a hot foot bath is the answer. Your porous feet will thank you. 31. Neck & Wing Relief. When you have neck and scapula tension, apply lavender with fractionated coconut oil, breath it in and massage those knots out! 32. A Hood of Wonder. Next time you have a cold or the flu, remember the lavender steam hood. Add 4-6 drops to a bowl of hot water. Place a towel over your head, and inhale the vapor slowly and deeply. 33. A Woodworker’s Friend. Do you work with wood or handle wood? Rather than dig a hole in your finger trying to catch that splinter, add a few drops of lavender, let the splinter swell and slip out. 34. Allergies, Sinuses & Congestion Oh My! Lavender can calm down unruly sinus issues, defiant allergies and other respiratory issues. Just apply on the back of your neck, chest, and between your eyes. 35. Fortify Your First Aid Kit. There are many dōTERRA products that would be tres glam additions to your First-Aid kit, but if you could only pick one, Lavender should be it. Why? Basic First-Aid kits are often geared toward minor skin irritation, scrapes, rashes, and so forth. Lavender is great for all those, not to mention its calming properties! *Copyrighted materials of doTERRA International, LLC *doTERRA is a registered trademark of doTERRA Holdings, LLC

7. Pollen allergies are common in  Spring  Summer  Fall  All of the Above 8. Which of the following allergy triggers is worse during humid or rainy weather?  Animal dander  Dust  Mold

A nswers : 1. Coughing, sneezing and a runny nose are among the symptoms that colds and allergies have in common. However, if you have yellow mucus with your runny nose, you may have a cold; allergies typically cause only a clear discharge. 2. If your coughing and sneezing is accompanied by an itchy, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes, chances are good that you have allergies. A cold typically doesn’t cause that itchy feeling.

3. Wheezing and shortness of breath can be caused by a cold or allergies if you have a respiratory condition, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Wheezing and shortness of breath also can be related to other infections of the respiratory tract, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. 4. Allergies typically aren’t accompanied by fever, so if your temperature is elevated, your sore throat may be related to a cold or other infection. 5. Allergy symptoms may persist as long as you are exposed to what’s causing them and aren’t taking any medication for them or getting allergy shots. If the allergy is caused by something seasonal, such as tree pollen, your symptoms should clear up when the pollen goes away. If it is caused by something that is always present, such as a pet, the symptoms can be chronic. 6. Nasal decongestants can help relieve the stuffy nose caused by either colds or allergies. But using nasal spray decongestants for longer than three days can make the nasal symptoms worse. 7. Pollen from trees, grass, and weeds is present in spring, summer, and fall. Tree pollen often causes allergies in the spring (April and May); grass and weed pollen trigger allergies in the summer (late May to July); and ragweed is responsible for some fall allergies (late August until the first frost). 8. Mold is a fungi that grows where water collects. Outdoors this can mean on rotting logs or in compost or leaf piles; indoors it can grow in damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens or basements. High levels of humidity or rainy weather can encourage mold growth and trigger allergies.

S ome ideas for natural allergy relief Apple Cider Vinegar || Apple cider vinegar is an age old remedy that is often suggested for a variety of health conditions. I’ve personally used it for allergy relief (and heartburn relief) with great success. The theory is that its ability to reduce mucous production and cleanse the lymphatic system makes it useful for allergies. It is also said to help digestion, weight loss and more--so it is worth a try!

perhaps the strongest results. In a pair of clinical trials led by a Swiss research team, butterbur tablets eased symptoms just as much as the over-the-counter antihistamines fexofenadine and cetirizine, respectively. As with any herb, you should check with your doctor before using, especially if you have a liver problem, are pregnant, or are on hormonal contraceptives.

Nettle Leaf || Nettle leaf is another natural antihistamine that can be very effective as it naturally blocks the body’s ability to produce histamine. It grows in many places and can be made into a tincture or tea, but for allergy relief, capsules made from dried nettle leaves are the easiest and most effective option. Nettle can also be used in combination with other herbs to make a soothing herbal tea for allergy relief. It is often mixed with peppermint leaf and sometimes red raspberry leaf to make a refreshing allergy relief tea. To Use: Either make a tea or use capsules for acute relief of allergy symptoms.

Probiotics || Allergies are the result of an imbalance in the immune system that causes the body to react too strongly to a stimuli. New research links the presence of beneficial bacteria in the gut with reduced incidence of allergies. Evidence is even emerging that a mother’s gut bacteria during pregnancy and nursing can impact a child’s likelihood of getting allergies throughout life. While we can’t do much about our mothers’ diets while they were pregnant, balancing gut bacteria now and consuming enough beneficial bacteria can have a positive effect on allergies now. Fermented foods and drinks like Kombucha or Kefir can help boost gut bacteria, as can a high quality probiotic capsule.

Local Honey || The theory is that consuming local honey from where you live will help your body adapt to the allergens in the environment there. This is supposed to work like a natural allergy “shot” and doesn’t seem to have a downside. To Use: Consume a teaspoon or more of raw, unprocessed local honey from as close to where you actually live as possible. Do this one or more times a day to help relieve symptoms. It is often suggested to start this a month or so before allergy season.

Diet Changes || Food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by your body's immune system.

Suggestion for use: Mix a teaspoon of organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with “The Mother” (that part is important) into a glass of water and drink this three times a day. This may help with relief of acute allergy symptoms and may help prevent allergy attacks as well.

In adults, the foods that most often trigger allergic reactions include fish, shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts, such as walnuts. Problem foods for children can include eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and wheat.

Neti Pot and Saline Rinse || The basic theory is that you use a Neti Pot filled with a sterile saline solution to flush out the sinuses of allergens and irritations.

Symptoms of food allergy include: • Itching or swelling in your mouth • Vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps and pain • Hives or eczema • Tightening of the throat and trouble breathing • Drop in blood pressure

To use: Either use a pre-made saline rinse or make your own by dissolving 1 teaspoon of Himalayan or sea salt in a quart of boiled distilled water. Cool completely and put in the Neti Pot. Pour through one nostril and let it drain out the other.

Herbs and Supplements || Several herbs and supplements— including spirulina, eyebright, and goldenseal—have been studied for allergy relief. The plant extract butterbur, which is thought to reduce airway inflammation, has produced what are

Your health care provider may use a detailed history, elimination diet, and skin and blood tests to diagnose a food allergy. You can only prevent the symptoms of food allergy by avoiding the food. After you and your health care provider have identified the foods to which you are sensitive, you must remove them from your diet.

Q. Do you see more positives or negatives in the current year & what would those be? A. There will be a little of both for the City. Less tax revenue means some projects will be put on hold. New development zoning are down for the first quarter of 2014. This means future projects are slowing down. There still are many projects going through the Building Permit Process, so we should see a steady construction effort here in the City. Also, the City is addressing the redevelopment of the downtown which will infuse private investment.

Q. What do you do to keep your business successful? A. We focus on safety and quality. We have programs that keep our people involved in putting their good ideas to work.

Q. How have our services helped you? A. “We continue to receive qualified individuals to fulfil our temporary employment needs. Last year the Planning Department needed an individual for three weeks while a staff member took a much needed vacation. The American Staffing placement proved to be exceptional. She caught on quickly to the workload, was great with public and fit in well with the other staff members. It was the American Staffing personnel who placed the perfect person for our needs.”

Q. How do you overcome business challenges? A. We embrace change, and do so as needed. Q. How have our services helped improve your company? A. Utilizing your services gives us an opportunity to see how well potential full time team members could work with our company. R on B riese with N orco :

Q. How have our services helped you? A. American Staffing gives us the option to ‘test drive’ employees. We don’t have all the extra headaches that we would have if we were to hire them on direct.

Give Your Home a Face Lift Wanting to freshen-up your home for sale or just to enjoy, but afraid you don’t have the money or time to take on a big project? A new coat of paint could be the answer to your wants and needs. Not only is it one of the least expensive ways to dramatically give your home a new look, but it is also one of the quickest. With paint, you can change the look and feel of a room in just a few hours, or your entire home in a couple weekends. Below are five simple tips to make your painting project go quicker, easier and with less waste.

Plan Ahead

These kinds of projects are best planned out in advance to avoid lost time, and ultimately lengthening the overall time spent to complete the job. A lot of that lost time comes from making multiple time-consuming trips back and forth to the store to pick up items that you forgot the first time. I guarantee that you will quickly learn the value of the planning. Before you go shopping, put together a list of those supplies and tools that you will need to complete the project. Take inventory of what you already have, and what you don’t. Shorten the list to the items that you will need to pick up at the store. Be sure to include the basics like paint brushes, rollers, extra roller covers, roller pans, drop cloths, spackle, and of course paint. Use an online paint calculator to determine how much paint you’ll need, or take your room dimensions to the paint supply store and have the sales representative do the calculations for you.

Use the Right Tools

You may think that all rollers and brushes are created equal, but they are not. In an effort to save a few buck, you may be making your life and this job more difficult than it needs to be. I’ve made this mistake, and spending those extra couple dollars for a quality paint brush or roller cover can make all the difference in the world. Quality paint brushes are worth their weight in gold. They cost a little bit more because they last longer, don’t shed brush hairs, and are less likely to leave unsightly brush marks that are hard to cover-up. This means less time spent going back over your work to conceal the marks.

If you are trying to cover a dark or bright wall, a good color blocking primer can be a lifesaver. This will limit the number of coats of paint needed to eliminate bleeding through and any mistakes.

Prep Only the Important Areas

Extensive painting preparation can tally up to a lot of additional time for your project. While you shouldn’t skip the prep completely, you don’t necessarily need to prep as much as you might think. Where excessively dirty or greasy walls may require a good degreaser solution and a little elbow grease, a relatively clean wall may require very little attention. You may only need to go over walls and trim with a damp cloth to remove loose dirt, dust and cobwebs. Drop cloths should be used to cover floors and large pieces of furniture. Limit the use of painter’s tape, as it takes a lot of time to cover all the trim. Whereas a steady hand, an angled finishing brush, and a little practice combined with a little patience can get you equally good results by cutting in.

Don’t Clean Up During Breaks

It is pain-staking the amount of time that is spent cleaning your brushes, roller covers and roller pans every time you take a break. Instead of washing out your brushes and rollers at each break, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or a plastic bag. If you make sure that your brushes and rollers are wrapped airtight, they won’t dry out and they will be ready when your break is over. These are just a few simple tips that can save you a lot of time, frustration and money when tackling a painting project. Ultimately you will be happier and so will your home.

Use Quality Paint and Primer

Just like painting tools, not all paint is created equal. Cheap paint is cheap for a reason. It will generally take several coats to do a good job. Quality paint, however, will usually cover your wall much better, with less coats, and in less time.

{Tea Tree Oil} The Power of Melaleuca Essential Oil Is your medicine cabinet full of ointments, oils, and creams that each treats one specific ailment? Maybe you can cut down on some of the clutter by adding nature's own wonder drug, tea tree oil, instead. What is Tea Tree Oil? Produced in Australia from the tree M. alternifolia, tea tree oil acts as an antiseptic, fungicide, insect deterrent, and more. It has been used in Australia by aborigines for generations and, since the country's colonization, has spread to the rest of the world. Tea tree oil, which can be found as an essential oil as well as in creams, ointments, shampoo, and even toothpaste, can be used to treat a staggering variety of conditions, including: acne, arthritis, athlete's foot, burns, cuts, dandruff, eczema, gingivitis, infection, insect bites and stings, lice, muscle sprains, psoriasis, and rashes. And that's just a partial list! Potential Benefits - The exact cause of tea tree oil's effectiveness is difficult to ascertain, and researchers are still looking into just how much the natural remedy can do for us. Newer studies have looked at its ability to stop the spread of sometimes-deadly methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus in hospitals.

Use Safely - While there are plenty of benefits to using tea tree oil, its strength can also be problematic, even dangerous. The Mayo Clinic advises that it's not safe to ingest or take tea tree oil internally, and it is considered particularly harmful if ingested by pets. Also, like most natural remedies, the US Food and Drug Administration does not regulate tea tree oil as it does other medicines, leaving no standard quality of tea tree oil products. And, while many people enthusiastically support tea tree oil, it is no substitute for professional medical care. Yet, many people agree that, if nothing else, tea tree oil should be a part of your first aid kid in case of bites, burns, or scrapes. But who knows? You might find yourself using it for much more than that.

A Yoga Experience

I have recently incorporated the use of exercise balls into my yoga classes. The colorful spheres of different sizes bring out an air of playfulness to our asana practice. Just having several balls roll around with us in class brings out giggles and uninhibited joy. Expression of feelings and exploration of new creative movements seem to be easily added to a routine. It’s wonderful how a bright green exercise ball will encourage personal exploration. Students naturally play and discover for themselves poses which are good for them rather than relying ‘solely’ on teacher directions. It is very important to purchase a ball of good quality. Cheaper is not necessarily better. A quality ball is not expensive; one can be purchased for about $20.00. Think about the size you want and choose the correct size for your body and your intention. Too large of a ball will prevent you from reaching the floor with a hand or foot while you are on the ball. You may find yourself rolling off to the side. And too small of a ball will not provide enough challenge or support for you. If you are 5’11” or taller, a 75 cm ball would be appropriate. That would be way too big for someone who is 5’2”, like me. There are guidelines on the side of the box the ball comes in to help you decide the correct size for you. We do use smaller balls in yoga (7”–10” and smaller), but they are used for purposes outside of the scope of this article. Stay tuned though and I will address the use of smaller balls in an upcoming article.

MAY 2014 | everythingwinnemucca.com

I like the stability balls, which are lightly weighted to lessen the chance of the ball slipping away from me. I can then trust that the ball will remain constant as I move in and out of different asanas (poses). It is also helpful to have a chair or a wall within easy reach to help with balance challenges. It takes practice to become acquainted with ball work. Take it slow and easy at first and remember to avoid any movements that would exacerbate an injury or cause even a small amount of pain. My motto in yoga is, “If it hurts, don’t do it!” It is best to work with a certified instructor to begin. Alignment is everything! A yoga-based workout with a ball is best done barefoot and on a comfortable floor. A yoga mat can be used but is not necessary unless the floor is slippery. Remember to incorporate the breath into your practice. Generally speaking, we breathe in as our body expands and breathe out as we contract our muscles. Inhale on expansion and exhale on contraction. When you are instructed to hold a pose for 3-5 breaths, it means to take in 3–5 long, slow, deep, nasal breaths, creating a full inhale and ride out the wave of the exhale. Take the time necessary to complete your focused breathing. This makes all the difference in the world in the effectiveness of your workout. Concentrated breath work is one of the things that sets yoga apart from other forms of exercise. I have been told that the yogis believe we are given so many breaths at birth. If we breathe rapidly and shallow, we use them up sooner than if we breathe slowly and deeply. We basically live longer with focused breathing.

Contributed by Rae Edwards, Yoga Therapist Center for Stress Management 775-623-0922

It is beneficial to begin a yoga-based ball practice by sitting on the ball and let your body move in any way that seems appropriate. You may begin to bounce gently up and down or side to side. Your hips may want to move in a large circle or perhaps front to back, as in a pelvic tilt. Relax your shoulders and your jaw. Let your head drop forward or in slow circles as you move the rest of your body. Move your arms in large or small circles. Allow your body to express itself in any way that is appropriate for you in this moment. Be playful and let your muscles decide what is best for you. Release all self-judgment. Go with whatever comes up for you right here and right now. Be playful with this initial movement. Uplifting music playing in the background encourages creative movement.

1. After you have warmed up a bit on the ball, you may begin to do some supported asanas (postures). I like to lay on the ball on my back and let my arms drop out to the sides, palms up. Take about 5 deep breaths in this position. This helps to open the back muscles and the pectoral and shoulder muscles as well.

2. From this position you can then bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor and roll towards your feet so that your shoulders and head only are supported on the ball. Keep the hips up and the knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Once again take about 5 breaths. Then gently lower your hips so that you come into a supported squat pose to open the lower back. Stay here for a few breaths. Repeat the exercise three times, being gentle as you move from one position to another.

3. Now lie on your back and put your feet up on the ball. Keep your legs straight as you raise your hips up into reversed plank pose. Let your weight press down into your shoulders as you keep your pelvis lifted as high as possible. Hold for 5 to 10 breaths, and then gently lower your hips onto the floor. Relax for several deep breaths with your legs up on the ball, knees bent. This will release any back tension that may have been created from the plank. Repeat several times, being very careful to relax completely between hip lifts. 4. Turn over and lay on the ball, belly down. Let your arms and legs curve around the ball in a comfortable, resting position. Allow your body to relax in this pose for several breaths before beginning the following poses.

5. Walk on your arms straight out away from the ball, so that only your lower legs or feet are on the ball. DO NOT LET YOUR LOWER BACK SAG TOWARDS THE FLOOR! Round your lower back, pressing it towards the ceiling and keep your hips up in a straight line. Push up through the shoulders and place your hands directly below your shoulders. Engage abdominal muscles as your hold this plank pose and breathe deeply for 5 – 10 breaths. To relax, you can bend your knees and bring the ball towards you with your feet. Repeat the pose several times, always remembering to end with relaxation.

6. You can also do supported Warriors and Triangle with the ball. Hold each pose for several breaths. As your do so, feel the ball support you as you gain stability and strength.

7. Lay on your back on your mat and place the ball between your feet, knees bent. Straighten your legs as you lift the ball above your body. Do several knee bends with the ball in place between your feet. This is quite a challenge with a weighted ball. Relax your upper body, including arms, hands, face, jaw and scalp as your work hard to lift the ball with your feet and legs. Repeat several times and rest in between repetitions.

8. Staying on your back on the mat, place your legs on the ball, knees bent. Lengthen your arms out to each side shoulder height. Look to the left as you allow your legs to drop to the right. Keep the lower leg on the ball to create an exaggerated twist in the torso. Relax in the twist for 10 deep breaths. Then repeat on the other side.

9. Let the ball go and relax on your mat for a few minutes before returning to your day. It’s so important to be in Savasana (corpse pose) in order to integrate your practice. As you lie there, focus on your breath and your body. If your mind entices you into a drama, ignore it and come back to your focus on breath and body. Feel all the wonderful sensations your body is experiencing after your yoga practice. These are just a few of the ball exercises we do in class. Let your imagination create your own ball practice. Just about any yoga pose can be incorporated into support with an exercise ball. Be innovative and have fun! Be sure to check with your physician before beginning any exercise program. If you would like learn more about yoga in class or privately, give me a call at 623-0922. My ongoing classes are Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 and also a NEW class on Thursdays at 5:30 PM at my home studio. Saturday classes are at Great Basin College, 9 am-11 am. Late Spring Maintenance Tips Contributed by Janet Jacaway, Real Estate Agent for Vision West Realty

Keeping up on your maintenance chores all summer will help keep your home operating with ease and allow you more time for summer play.

Here are some tips: • Check gutters, downspouts and the roof for leaks. • Adjust your sprinklers so that they are not spraying the exterior siding on your home and causing damage. Touch up any part of the siding that bare wood may be showing. Doing this will prevent moisture from getting into your siding and causing damage.

Reaching me is simple! 304-1414 janet@visionwestrealty.com

• Cleaning the fireplace or stove is a must yearly. If you don’t know how to clean your chimney, then call an expert to come in and do the job. It could prevent you from dealing with costly damage from poor maintenance. • Clean your dryer vent. Check it inside the house and at the exterior. Many house fires are responsible from backed up dryer vents. • Clean up debris around the A/C unit compressor. If you have a roof mounted A/C, then make sure that there are no leaks from the water source. Leaky units can cause damage to the roof. • Clear out debris from under decks and porches. If the deck is getting weathered, now is the time to take on this project, instead of when it is extremely hot. Make sure there aren’t any nails popping up through the wood that could be painful toe stoppers. • Cut back any trees or shrubs that may be touching the roof or siding of the home. It is best if your vegetation is setting at least 8 inches from the side of your home. • Clean and repair patio furniture before you start entertaining. • Wash windows and put screens back in. • Make sure you look over your children’s play equipment for damage and fix it before the kids start playing on it. These are just some of the tips for homeowners as a regular routine and excellent guidelines for home owners who are looking to put their home on the market. For other tips on buying and selling a home, call me. I have access to all the listings in Winnemucca and can show any property—regardless of whose sign is in the yard. May is Healthy Vision Month Contributed by Dr. Cody Bengoa, FCOVD

The National Eye Institute (NEI) has designated May as Healthy Vision Month, and is urging Americans to protect their eyes and save their vision. Nearly 1 out of 8 Americans have eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. Here are some Tips from the NEI & Dr. Bengoa On How to Make Your Vision Last a Lifetime:

Get an Annual Eye Exam A thorough eye health and vision examination can help to ensure that your eyes stay healthy and allow you to retain your sight throughout your life. During an annual exam, your vision is assessed and your eye health is evaluated from front to back to look for early signs of eye diseases. Dr. Bengoa’s office has new instrumentation, including retinal photography, that can help keep track your eye health.

Take a Look at Your Family History Many eye conditions are genetic. Talking to family members about their eye health history can help you determine if you are at an increased risk of developing certain eye diseases.

Use Protective Eyewear Wearing approved safety glasses and goggles can help prevent eye injury. Sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation are important for eye care. Dr. Bengoa’s office has an instrument which can determine whether your sunglasses are protecting you!

Eat Healthy Foods & Exercise Dark leafy greens, such as spinach, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, can help you protect your vision. People who exercise regularly are also less likely to develop macular degeneration.

Warning: Smoking causes vision loss and blindness. Smoking puts you at a much higher risk of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, and optic nerve damage. Smoking is also as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of the body.

These are just a few steps to get you on the path to better vision. To learn more about keeping your eyes healthy, visit www.nei.nih.gov/healthyeyes or call Bengoa Eye Care at 775-625-3937 to schedule an eye exam.

Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process. Lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again. Hunger also may make children more prone to illness and other health issues. The Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill that nutrition gap and make sure children can get the nutritious meals they need. During the school year, many children receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs, but what happens when school lets out? Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child's need for good nutrition. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to help children in low-income areas get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow, throughout the summer months when they are out of school.

You know that children who miss school breakfast and lunches are more likely to be sick, absent or tardy, disruptive in class, and inattentive. They also score lower on achievement tests. Good nutrition is essential for learning in school. So, SFSP provides an opportunity to continue a child's physical and social development while providing nutritious meals during long vacation periods from school, and helps children return to school ready to learn. Retrieved from http://www.summerfood.usda.gov/. In response, the Frontier Community Action Agency along with the Wade Distributing, HGH, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, USDA, and the Department of Education have teamed up to bring the Summer Food Service Program to Humboldt and Pershing Counties.

In addition, they can also plan and do educational or recreational activities with the children. A quick Internet search of “Cinco de Mayo” produces images of Mexican food, Happy Cinco de Mayo clip art, margaritas, Mexican beer and Mexican folk dancers. At first glance, the results give the impression that this date must be one of great celebration in Mexico. Well….not exactly. Cinco de Mayo’s literal translation is May 5th, and while the name is very similar to the United States’ 4th of July, it is not the celebration of Mexico’s independence, which is actually celebrated September 16th. May 5th commemorates the famous battle of Puebla that occurred in 1862, well over half a century after Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821. Well then you might ask, what is the significance of May 5th?

On May 5th, 1862, Mexico fought against the forces of France at the town of Puebla; due to our own ongoing Civil War at the time, the United States was unable to enforce the Monroe Doctrine, which was intended to prohibit European involvement in the Americas. The French goal was to declare Mexico part of the French empire by installing Archduke Maximillian I of Austria as emperor of Mexico. Despite being out numbered and out gunned two-to-one, the Mexican army defeated the French. And while the battle of Puebla was won on that day; France later achieved its goal of overthrowing the Mexican government in 1864. At the end of the Civil War; however, the United States reiterated its commitment to the Monroe Doctrine, and threatened to send troops into Mexico causing the French to withdraw. Mexico’s underdog victory on May 5th 1862 was not forgotten and has long been a symbol of unity and national pride for Mexico. Today, Cinco de Mayo is a nationally recognized holiday, but it is more of a regional celebration in Mexico, mostly occurring in the state of Puebla. Unlike Mexico’s Independence Day, September 16th, which is celebrated with great patriotism nationwide. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on a much larger scale here in the United States than in Mexico. This is especially true in those states with a large portion of people with ties to Mexican heritage. In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, indulging in Mexican food, drink and discovering the artistry of Mexican music and dance right in our own communities. Locally, the Spirit of Mexico youth dance group has taken on this mission year round to share the beauty of Mexico’s culture by learning and performing Mexican folklore dances for our community. Through the support of the Humboldt County School District and Lowry High School, these dancers, including 15 junior dancers and 13 teen and young adult dancers are able to rehearse and engage in a healthy and positive activity. Spirit of Mexico will be performing May 17th for the Everything Winnemucca Block Party at Khourys. We proudly invite everyone to come out and enjoy this marvelous youth performance at this great community event.
