Directors Notes The City of Elko Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to present the 2013 fall & winter recreation guide. With such a successful summer we are ready to gear up for a fun and active fall and winter. In this addition of the “Elko Explorer” you will find a wide variety of healthy, entertaining and educational activities to choose from to keep yourselves busy between school and work. Each activity is designed to offer opportunities for people to add a little fun into their lives and create an over-all sense of community involvement from recreational sports for children, to the first annual “Santa Scoot” to kick off the holiday season. For those of you that are new to the Elko area, we welcome you and hope that you see and experience all of the unique opportunities and programs that Elko has to offer. Our Mission The City of Elko Parks & Recreation Department strives to provide community programs and services where unmet interests and needs exist, and to promote cooperation with schools, athletic and civic organizations, community agencies and interested individuals in the areas of education, recreation and social and cultural pursuits. Refunds
Refunds are given if programs are canceled or if registration fails because the activity is full or weather conditions force us to cancel. Refunds cannot be guaranteed after the program has begun. Requests must be made at least five (5) business days before a program/class is scheduled to begin. A $10.00 service fee will be charged for ALL refund requests. Refunds will not be given after program has begun.
Weather Policy
Every attempt will be made to inform participants of program cancellations due to inclement weather. When weather is a factor, parents or participants may call the Parks and Recreation Department at 775-777-7260.

Youth Scholarship Campaign Brighten up a child’s life by donating to our scholarship fund! Large or small, your sponsorship will help contribute to a child’s participation in our recreation programs that otherwise may not be able to do so. Youth Sports AYSO Soccer Contact: (775) 777-5037 Elko/Spring Creek and Carlin AYSO has been providing a high-quality soccer experience for more than 20 years. Teams in the U5-U14 division play other Elko, Spring Creek and Carlin during regular season. Competitive teams are put together in the summer for travel to tournaments. The Police Athletic League (PAL) was founded nearly 20 years ago by Sgt. Fred Bradley, retired. Originally PAL sponsored football, basketball and wrestling. The football and wrestling programs have since gone private. The PAL basketball program currently provides a positive learning environment for children from the 3rd grade to the 8th grade while the volleyball program targets the 5th and 6th grade children. Enrollment in PAL programs cost $30.00 that covers equipment and insurance costs for PAL. PAL is a nonprofit organization. It’s programs run from September to April of each year. PAL relies on volunteers in order to offer these programs for our children.

Fork & Cork Wine Tasting Sneak Peek Get a sneak peak to the 2014 Fork & Cork Wine Series. Join the City of Elko Recreation Department as we educate participants in the art of pairing delicious wines and extraordinary food from the Historic Star Hotel Restaurant. Admission is $25.00 per person or $45.00 for a couple. Tickets are available at the City of Elko Parks and Recreation Office Located at 723 Railroad St, or from Angie at the Star Hotel. Participants must be 21 years of age or older. The 2014 Fork & Cork Wine Series will be Feb 8th, March 8th, April 12th and May 10th. SANTA SCOOOOT Drag that Old Santa outfit out of the closet and join in the Santa Scoot. Santa, elves, candy canes and Mrs. Clause will challenge their ability to complete a 5k in the dead of Elko’s winter. However, the 5k cannot be completed without Santa’s favorite red beverage. Participants must complete the race with Santa’s beverage in hand, the participant with the most beverage remaining will compete for the SANTA SCOOT trophy. Costumes are mandatory. Transportation of feet, skate board, red rider wagon, pogo stick, moon boots, roller blades and non-motorized scooters are recommended. No bicycles or cup holders allowed. City of Elko Latchkey Program (Fun Factory) The City of Elko Recreation Department provides a before and after school Latchkey program and a full day summer program for k-6th grades in the Elko Community. The before school program is held from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and the after school program is held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday (open early out times). We provide this program to all Elko schools with transportation to and from the other schools. This program includes snacks and juice, arts and crafts, homework assistance, tutoring, drug awareness curriculum, and organized activities. During the year we periodically have special presentations by various professions such as the Elko Police Department to promote awareness programs such as “Stranger Danger”, “K-9” unit, and drug and alcohol abuse dangers; The Elko Fire Department instructs on home fire safety and needs; and other professionals within the community. Youth Programs Pre-School Art Camp This Creative Art Camp is a place for preschoolers to explore their creative talent and imagination. We will be making different arts and crafts based around the theme of the day. This will be a hands-on, fun, and creative outlet for artistic kids. YOUTH ACTING CAMP Students will focus on teamwork and individual strength building for the actor. Character development and scene work will also be explored. Offered on Saturdays, each clinic consists of a beginning class (never, ever, ever skied) and a novice class (has skied/ taken lessons before). Sessions are directed by certified instructors and coaches. The SnoBowl ElkoKids Ski Program specializes in making learning to ski a fun and safe experience. Special Events Family Skate Night The City of Elko Recreation Department and Nevada East Roller Girls would like to present Family Skate Night. Come down to the Igloo Rec. Center the third Friday of the Month, from 5pm to 9pm with your roller skates/blades for some family fun. Come and join in with the great music, concessions and some fun skating competitions. Santa’s Workshop Once again Santa’s elves will be hard at work playing Christmas games, making Christmas ornaments and decorating Christmas cookies. Trick or Treat Street Join The City of Elko Recreation department in the spook of Halloween for some fun Halloween games, along with a photo booth for the whole family. Trick or Treat Street gives parents a chance to relax and not worry about the unpredictable elements that Elko throws our way during the fall season as well as shows support for the non-profit organizations. So bring your little goblins, witches, vampires, and princesses’ and create a memory that is sure to last longer than the candy collected at the booths. Special Events Elko Snobowl Spaghetti Feed Join the 2013 Snobowl Spaghetti Feed fund raiser for this annual event.
