Directors Notes Summer is finally here!! We proudly present the Elko Recreations’ 2013 summer of fun activities guide. You will find a variety of healthy, entertaining and educational activities to choose from. Each activity and event is designed to offer opportunities for people to put a little fun into their lives and create a sense of community spirit. Many new and exciting weeks are scheduled, so take a look and sign up for a great summer. For those of you new to Elko or new to our programs, we welcome you. We sincerely hope that you’ll find that Elko is truly your place to play. For those of you who’ve been with us awhile, you’ll find a variety of new classes and some of the old favorite ones. Be sure and get ahead of the game by signing up early. During the summer months Elko Parks are filled to capacity for picnics, family gatherings, sports activities and special events. We are happy to see so many people in our community taking advantage of our beautiful facilities. We welcome your comments, questions and concerns. Come Teach With Us! The City of Elko Parks & Recreation is committed to providing quality programs for all ages, interests and levels. Programs offered strive to foster new skills, promote health and well-being, and expand cultural and artistic development. In order to provide these programs, the City of Elko Parks & Recreation Department seeks experienced individuals to work as contracted instructors to share their special talents, skills or knowledge with others in a class, camp or workshop format.
PARK & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD Regular meetings of the City of Elko Parks & Recreation Advisory Board are conducted on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (Place TBA). All residents are encouraged to attend. Persons wishing to present a discussion topic should contact James Wiley, Parks & Recreation Director in advance, at 777-7266.

You will only be notified if the class/activity is full or canceled. You will not receive a confirmation letter or call.
Refunds
Refunds are given if programs are canceled or if registration fails because the activity is full or weather conditions force us to cancel. Refunds cannot be guaranteed after the program has begun. Requests must be made at least five (5) business days before a program/class is scheduled to begin. A $10.00 service fee will be charged for ALL refund requests. Refunds will not be given after program has begun.
Weather Policy
Every attempt will be made to inform participants of program cancellations due to inclement weather. When weather is a factor, parents or participants may call the Parks and Recreation Department at 775-777-7260.

Brighten up a child’s life by donating to our scholarship fund! Large or small, your sponsorship will help contribute to a child’s participation in our recreation programs that otherwise may not be able to do so. Pick up a star at the Recreation Office or fill out and return form below and pledge your donation today! Some examples of what your sponsorship will provide: $10 – Sponsor a session of Karate, Dance or Gymnastics $25 – Sponsor a child for Swimming Lessons $50 – Sponsor a child for a Sport Camp session $75 – Sponsor a child for a Week of Day Camp

youth sports AYSO Soccer Contact: (775) 777-7413 Elko/ Spring Creek and Carlin AYSO has been providing a high-quality soccer experience for more than 20 years. Teams in the U5-U14 division play other Elko, Spring Creek and Carlin during regular season. Competitive teams are put together in the summer for travel to tournaments. Birth certificate required at registration. Who: 4 to 14 years of age Registration: Summer Registration Dates TBA Price: $55.00 for first child $50 for each sibling. Sports staff will use the “Learning Through Games” approach to help your child develop basic sports skills such as throwing, catching, kicking and hitting. If you need help establishing good conduct and curbing bad habits, this course is for you and your dog. Sharon uses a light-handed approach to help you teach the commands heal, sit, stand, stay, sit & stay, down & stay, and recall. Results guaranteed! TEEN programs SUPER SITTERS WORKSHOP Learn to be a SUPER SITTER by developing skills that will improve and enhance your efficiency as a childcare provider. This class teaches the sitter how to quell the child’s fears when the parents leave, how to entertain a child, home safety, and what to do in an emergency. Youth programs ADVENTURE DAY CAMPS Well, hello there!! Glad you could join us on this trip through a little thing we call Adventure Day Camps. You think it’s going to get hot outside this summer? Just wait until you take a look through this schedule...you’ll see that we’re turning up the heat, too! Every one of our day camps is chock-full-o’ summer fun, and you’re not going to want to miss a single second of it. Campers will enjoy daily field trips, which may include swimming, museums, hiking and exploring. An experienced, trained and responsible staff will lead young campers on numerous travels. Mixed in with the journeys are activities that include arts and crafts, games, organized sports and contests, many parks and special event days. Ask for a weekly schedule at time of registration. *Bring a cold lunch and drink, water bottle, swimsuit, towel, hat, sunscreen and weather appropriate clothing every day. COWPOKE CAMP

Youth programs OUTDOORS EXPLORATIONS CAMP Kid’s 3rd - 5th grades are invited to explore Elko and Nevada’s rich history. Campers will learn about how gold is mined in Northern Nevada and how they mined in the “Old Days”. We will visit the Sherman Station, the train station, the Pioneer Trail, the local museum, and a nearby mine. The diverse activities of the week are sure to give you an appreciation for the wonderful place you live. Do you have the spirit of adventure? If so, answer the call of the wild by joining us for trips to some of our area’s most fascinating wild places to investigate nature at her finest. Our adventures will take us on a hike to Lamoille Lake in Lamoille Canyon, and on an outing to a local Ranch. Nature lovers will have the opportunity to study insects, different plants, and other animals. Bring your curiosity and be prepared to get a little bit (maybe a lot) dirty. Youth workshops Mountain Man Mini Rendezvous Learn about the mountain men who trapped in this area in the 1820s and 1830s. They were rugged individuals who traveled in groups while living off the land and living among the natives. Participants will take a hike on the Trail Center’s nature trails using a compass to guide their way as the early trappers did. In addition, kids will learn about journaling and see and feel pelts of animals trapped in the Humboldt Valley. See demonstrations on knife and hatchet throwing, fire starting and weapons of the early 1800s. Please bring water and a snack. Fitness Swimmer This is a fitness swimming class for upper level children. Lesson runs Mon-Fri. from 10:0010:45 am for 2 weeks. Swimming requirements must be met. elko county library Dig Into Reading At the Elko County Library The Fun Begins June 10, 2013 How the Program Works 1. Children & young adults, ages 0 thru 18, can register for a variety of programs. 2. Participants will register in 1 of 3 age groups: 0 thru 3, 4 thru 11, or 12 thru 18. 3. Registration begins May 13th and continues throughout the summer. 4. Each age group will have a logbook or log sheet in which to record their reading. 5. The Library will offer a variety of events, giveaways, and contests all summer, so pick up a schedule of events and drop in as often as possible. 6. Prizes will be awarded for each portion of the program participants have completed. 7. Everyone who completes all of the program will receive a t-shirt. 8. special events LAZY MAN TRIATHLON Have you always wanted to try a triathlon, but little intimidated by the one day completion? Well, have we got the triathlon for you!! During the month of July, log your miles as you run, bike and swim your way to “Iron man Distances”. In completing all distances by July 31, 2012 participants will receive a triathlon t-shirt and an opportunity to have their name placed in a drawing for some great prizes. We also encourage participants to challenge themselves and participate in the Olympic Distance Triathlon on October 4th – 5th. Please inquire about the due-athlon that will be offered on October 5th. All participants that return their distance cards on July 31st will receive their triathlon t-shirt. special events City of Elko 1st Annual “Western” Cardboard Boat Races Test your construction skills in the art of constructing a cardboard yacht. Builders will be placed in separate age groups as put their boats to the test “water.” Specific rules have been set in regards to construction material. Humans will act as “engines” as they push their boat from one end of the pool and back with kickboard. Awards will be awarded to all first, second and third place winners in each division. Special awards will be awarded for best themed, titanic, business and Mayor’s Award. Please pick up an instruction manual at the City of Elko Recreation Office (723 Railroad St) or Elko Swimming Pool (1501 College Ave.) This year’s theme is “western.” Divisions: ages 6yrs and under; 7 – 8 yr. old; 9-10 yr. old; 11-12 yr. old; 13-15 yr. old; 16 & up; (Business) Fee: On-line Registration $5.00; Day of Event $10 When: July 21st Sunday, 11:00am – 2:00pm Where: Elko Swimming Pool (1501 College Ave.)

Home & Business Expo ~ May 11 & 12, 2013 Annual event showcasing vendors from all over in regards to Home & Business.This event is typically held Mother’s Day weekend at the Convention Center. 3rd Annual International Beer Festival ~ June 21, 2013 Annual fun event where the public is welcome to come out and try a variety of international beer selections. Beer pong, horseshoes, and other games are available outside and we are planning to incorporate a BBQ cook off this year. Held at Elko Basque House. Sherman Dinner & Auction ~ July 27, 2013 Our annual fundraiser to benefit the upkeep of Sherman Station and the outlying buildings. Sherman Station Ranch house was built in 1880 by Bavarian emigrant Valentine Walther. In 1998, the Sherman Station was relocated to Elko from a Huntington Valley Ranch about 60 miles south. This dinner is held outside at Sherman Station. 64
