Towering above the skyline at 190 feet
Some of our more daring staff members from the New Children’s Hospital (NCH) project took part in The Smithfield Tower Drop at the end of April to raise much needed funds for The Ronald McDonald House Charities Ireland.
Towering above the skyline at 190 feet, this iconic Irish landmark was the launching point which saw Amy Coyle, Adam Hyland, Brandon Kelly, Brian McGrath, Ciara Smith, Dermot O’Shea, Eoin Glennane and Killian Marmion abseil into Smithfield Square. There was a great party atmosphere to welcome them on their descent back to ground.
The NCH staff raised close to €3,500 with Jones Engineering matching this amount. The event itself raised nearly €100,000.
Ronald McDonald House Charities is the NCH’s charity of the year and is situated in the grounds of Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin, Dublin.
It helps families of seriously ill children undergoing medical treatment at CHI by providing a home-away-from-home so they can stay close to their hospitalised child at very little cost.
When completed, the NCH will be the centre for the care and treatment of critically ill children from all over Ireland. There are also plans for a new 52-bedroomed Ronald McDonald House facility in the heart of the new hospital campus to provide even more services for these families.
At Jones Engineering we are committed to playing an active role within our communities and strive to make a difference by supporting charities through company and employee efforts such as this one.
Well done to all who took part in Smithfield on the day.

CIF DIGICON
The Jones Engineering BIM Team was out in force a the CIF DigiCon event held in Croke Park in June.
The focus of this year’s event was: Alignment, the key players in the eco-system - integrators, policymakers, and clients.
We had the pleasure to meet various Jones Engineering industry peers including BAM, Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), Intel, MSD, and Sisk to name a few.
Each presented the industry-changing work they are implementing through digital construction, and how we as a generation are redefining the construction industry.
Alongside our peers, Jones Engineering BIM Manager, Belinda Dillon attended as a panelist to discuss how Jones Engineering facilitates our role as an integrator; and how project management is changing.
SUSTAINABLE LUNCH & LEARN
Due to the high environmental impact and energy consumption in the building sector, new regulations in the area of sustainability certification in this sector will be on the agenda sooner or later. This poses greater challenges for all industry players.
In July we hosted a lunch and learn on the Sustainable MEP Building Design for Net-Zero Buildings.
Also, in June our BIM Team collected the Innovation: Model to Manufacture award at the ICE Awards. We are extremely proud of this achievement and recognise it would not be feasible without the innovation and dedication of our incredible BIM Team.
Held in the Herbert Park Hotel, attendees were delivered information which enabled them to expand their knowledge in the field of sustainable building, especially in the Commercial HVAC industry, and learn about the objectives and terminology of building sustainability.
On the day we had guest speakers from Keane Environmental Ltd. and Kampmann Group.

WE CHOOSE TO REUSE!
SUSTAINABILITY CALL TO ACTION
We are making a simple change that will have a significant impact. In Jones, we have been providing disposable cups, paper towels, spoons and stirrers. These singleuse, disposable items are nature intensive products needing water, trees and energy alongside plastic, glue and other materials and over 98% never get recycled.
We are at the beginning of our journey as a Responsible Business and are looking to reduce our impact. From this September we will cease ordering the following disposable items.
• Disposable Cups
• Wooden Spoons
• Wooden Stirrers
• Paper Towels
Hand dryers, reusable cups and teaspoons will be available as a replacement, and we will be stocking up on these items. The stats and figures are undeniable. Here are but a few:
• 22,000 coffee cups are disposed of in Ireland every hour, that is 528,000 every day or 200 million a year.
• Most single-use “paper” cups contain a polyurethane coating, making recycling difficult and rare. Less than 2% are actually recycled.
• Over 40% of plastic created annually is for single-use items.
• Four billion trees, or 35% of trees felled, are used for paper.
• Annual consumer waste has increased more than tenfold from 40kg in the 1950s, to 560kg of waste per person now.
• 12 billion gallons of water are used in the making of paper cups annually.

NAVVIS VLX3 MOBILE MAPPING SYSTEM
Jones Engineering have recently invested a NavVis VLX 3 Mobile Mapping System. This is a significant move for the company’s Geo-Surveying Division, as it will make Laser Scanning more accessible to sites, due to faster data collection, faster data delivery, and reduced costs.
NavVis VLX 3 is the industry-leading, wearable mobile mapping system that efficiently delivers comprehensive, highly-detailed reality capture data for complex sites, both indoor and outdoor, so you can scan more at scale.
A first-of-its-kind wearable device which enables operators to comfortably scan at the speed of walking, NavVis VLX is powered by precision SLAM technology.
With multiple methods of transporting NavVis VLX 3, moving around and between sites has never been simpler. A protective, hard-shelled case on wheels enables air and rail travel, allowing our professional Geo-Surveyors to travel to and from domestic and international sites safely, quickly, and with unprecedented efficiencies.
This innovation will be available to all Jones Engineering clients in many sectors including Data Centres, Life Science, Semi-Conductor, Industrial, Commercial, Healthcare, Food & Beverage, Renewable Energy, etc.
Jones Engineering Geo-Survey Manager, Rob Hughes, explains “with the NavVis VLX 3, the future of Mobile Mapping certainly has arrived. This investment will be a game changer for us, accelerating turnarounds while maintaining incredible data standards. Adding this technology to our existing suite of services including Terrestrial Laser Scanning, Hybrid Laser Scanning, Drone Lidar, etc, will enable us offer unrivalled data quality to our clients.”
GVX01 SWEDEN
In June we successfully completed the 4th and final phase handover of our flagship GC2 project in Sweden, topping out at circa 40MW.
This project is considered to be a huge success by both ourselves and our confidential client whom we continue to work with on other current projects.
Project highlights include 1.75m working hours Lost Time injury free, a standard setting level of quality and all phases delivered on time or sooner. A big thanks to all involved for their contribution.

APPRENTICE 7-A-SIDE
In June we celebrated our first Annual Apprentice 7-a-side football tournament. Eight teams battled it out on the field.
After the tournament the celebrations continued with a sizzling BBQ and a special guest appearance by Ireland legend Niall Quinn, who presented our victorious team with their well-deserved trophies.
ST. VINCENTS GAA
We are delighted to become the new sponsors of St. Vincent’s GAA.
The sponsorship covers the senior women’s and men’s teams at the club.
It is a privilige to be associated with such a decorated sports club and we are proud to be part of the team.
Did you know the Pembroke Office has a running club?
Set up by Chris McAuley in the Summer of 2022, they say it is a seasonal running club (they’re not fans of the rain) but they have been seen running all year round.
The club currently has 11 members who run on their lunch breaks once a week. They even have a Whatsapp group to share information but rumour has it the group is filled with memes.
The club is are currently open to new members wishing to join. All you need to do is make yourself known to El Presidente Christopher McAuley and you will be added to the notorious WhatsApp group.
The group is looking at expanding the running to a couple of times a week with the aim of possibly running together in a Marathon in the new year.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY
Sustainability can mean different things to different people, however in its broadest sense it is an integrated approach to environmental, social, and economic development. The balance between these three pillars is becoming increasingly more urgent as we cannot continue to maintain a functioning society without a huge cost to our environment.
To continue to have a planet where we all can prosper requires us to urgently address climate change and halt biodiversity loss.
Climate Change
We are already seeing the devastating effects of climate change around the world – increased flooding and droughts. Last year more than 25 countries had their hottest year on record. The science is clear. The next decade is crucial for climate action. In line with the goal of the Paris Agreement, we need to reach net zero emissions by 2050 to limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, we will only be able to achieve this goal if we cut our current emissions in half by 2030, which is less than 7 years away.
What this means is that all of us have both a responsibility to act now, both at work and in our own lives. Sustainability is not another department, or project within the company. It needs to be embedded in the work we all do every day. We all need to consider how we can do things differently in our jobs to reduce our impact on the environment. This may include activities such as collaborating on projects with our suppliers and customers, procuring more sustainable materials, measuring the carbon footprint of our projects, re-using materials, and managing waste correctly.
We now need to work together to imbed this framework into our processes and activities across our business divisions.
At Jones Engineering
Many of our clients are now asking us what we can do through tenders, pre-quals and supplier engagement surveys. Right now, they are using a ‘carrot’ approach, but the direction of travel suggests that companies may start to exclude suppliers if they are not addressing sustainability in their business. Globally the construction industry is responsible for 38% of the world’s carbon emissions.
Our sector is going to come under increasing pressure to decarbonise over the coming years, especially given the projected increases in demand for new buildings.
10
So, What Can We Do?
Our ambition is simple - to continue to grow our business in a responsible and sustainable manner with consideration to the environmental and social impacts of everything we do. While we recognise that sustainability is a journey, we have now established a responsible business framework to manage both our environmental and social impact.
Our Responsible Business Framework will support us in reaching our ambition. It consists of four pillars: Our People, Our Planet, Our Products and Services and Our Community and is aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

MORE JONES CYCLE
This year’s client charity cycle was in aid of LauraLynn and to say the cycle was a resounding sucess, might be an understatement. 70 cyclists covered over 6,000km around the picturesque Wicklow mountains.
Together, we were able to raise €10,000 for LauraLynn that will make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.
LauraLynn Ireland’s Children’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care for children with life-limiting conditions and supports for their families across Ireland.
