The Police Blotter
Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. BEDFORD, OH: A woman reported her 2001 VW stolen and four hours later called back to say she’d seen her car driving in a funeral procession. Police arrested the man shortly after. He’d also stolen the car’s new license plates. – Bedford Sun Banner
Learn Russian With Tanya
YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is just our phonetic interpretation. Do people in your country use anything unusual to make vodka? Liudi v vshe strane ispolzuut chto-nibud neobychnoe pri izgotovlenii vodki? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: My mozhem delat vodku iz chego-ugodno. U nas dazhe est berezovaya i klenovaya vodka Which translates to: We’ll make vodka from just about anything. We even make vodka from birch and maple trees. –Tanya Zotava
Weird Word Of The Week
Slubberdegullion The English language has more disparaging words than you’ll ever need, like this one describing a filthy person.

A Picture From The Past
FEAST your eyes on the United States Hotel, which once graced the southern block of Washington Street where Winterwood, La Patisserie and A Ca Mia are today. After 16 years of operation, fire reduced the building to rubble on August 31, 1869. The hotel was nearly filled to capacity at the time of the fire, but all the guests were able to escape before the building succumbed to the f lames. The hotel was assessed at a value of $90,000 but was only insured for $47,000. – Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. You’ve seen this cute little car all over town, now if you know what company it’s for, you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
WE ALL know trees consume carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, but did you know that a single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year? That is equivalent to the amount of oxygen a human consumes over the course of two years.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Love because it is only true adventure. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a dish of General Tso’s chicken and egg drop soup. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
F
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
IRST, the good news. The city council have finally agreed on a plan for the new convention hall. Demolition of the existing cowshed should begin in November, with pilings being driven a few months after that. Construction of the hall would begin around May of next year (which should be quite a nice sight for the summer visitors), with the whole kit and caboodle finished by Memorial Day, 2012. And the bad news? The hall will not be the 34,000 square-foot gem that was originally conceived. Instead, we will get 20,000 square feet and a lot fewer bells and whistles – which means a lot fewer opportunities for raising revenue. And overall, we will have a much less interesting and exciting centerpiece for this beautiful city. But you know what, some people (including some council members) are a little too shortsighted and conservative for our liking and seem to forget that their city hall colleagues from Cape May’s Victorian heyday were always thinking up grand schemes that would maintain the city’s tourism economy. We think that those guys would be shaking their heads in disappointment if they were to witness the small-minded thinking of today’s administrators. But let’s move on... AFTER months, nay years, of convention hall nonsense, you are likely in need of a drink, and a laugh. Hey presto! You will have all of that when the first-ever Cape May Forum launches next weekend – Friday, October 8 through Sunday. The theme of this inaugural event is “Humor: Can It Save the World?” You can check out the whole program on their website, www.capemayforum.org, but we’d like to pick out some highlights. Two of New York City’s most sought-after professional comedians, Sassi Keegan and Mary Dimino, will entertain guests at the Rusty
³
Nail on Sunday evening, October 10 with their interactive 90-minute Comedy Club show. This is great family fare (PG-rated) – you can fill yourself with some tasty appetizers and be entertained for just $35 per person, all inclusive, plus a cash bar. We also like the sound of keynote speaker Dr John Morreall’s presentation, which is called “From the Pilgrims to the Simpsons: A History of Humor in American Life.” Count us in! Doc Morreall’s show is on Saturday, October 9, at 10am at the First Presbyterian Church on Hughes Street, and admission is $25. We know – getting up early to go to church on a Saturday morning might not SEEM like the funniest thing to do, but trust us, we saw the Doc work his magic with a talk at the church in July. He was good. Funny AND thoughtful. Just like the perfect date. To make your reservation for any Cape May Forum event, call the office at (609) 770-2626. Space is limited, so DO call ahead for tickets. IF YOU get the chance, visit one of the old Victorian homes in this town. This past weekend, Laura Schmeider, a beloved relative of the EZ extended family, rented out the beautiful, teal home at the corner of Decatur Street and
³
Carpenter’s Lane and offered us a peek inside. After being paralyzed from the waist down by a rare tumor Laura has spent the past month in physical therapy and has since gained the ability to walk with the use of a cane. Next step is a grueling course of chemo. And what did she want to do before undergoing her treatment? A weekend in Cape May. The simple act of walking through one of these houses is worthwhile. Ornate banisters bend their way up three floors to one of the many bedrooms – one of which had a windowed turret and a sitting chair. Sitting on the front porch, having a glass of wine, it was easy to imagine the history of this town, the sights you would have seen when gazing off of this front porch 100 years ago. Eventually, though, the only thing we could think about was how wealthy the original owner of the house must have been. So, we sent our resident historian Ben Miller a text message and asked him for some info on the place. Sadly, all he could come up with was that 132 Decatur Street was built in 1895 for a local man named Aaron Roseman. But, Ben assured us that Mayor Edmunds, the original owner of the Merry Widow, which is a somewhat comparable house in a similar location, was indeed loaded. With his email, Ben also included a picture of the Merry Widow from the mid-1980s. The building was discolored and tattered, the roof a patchwork of tar paper, loose shingles and boards. The picture struck us as a metaphor for the town: it is important that we not let Cape May stagnate. It is important that we grow and improve. While many people have fond childhood memories of this town and don’t want it to change, we have to remember that if we just let it sit the way it is, it’s going to crumble around us. Brothers With The Cards Stacked Against Them
An interview with Jed Reynolds and Stephen Rider, stars of “Topdog/Underdog” - by Jon Roth
S
EPTEMBER 3o marks the opening night of Topdog/Underdog, a play that has received accolades nationwide for its unsparing treatment of family conflict and poverty in today’s urban landscape. Following the successful September production of Beckett’s Happy Days, Cape May Stage has selected another award-winning piece of drama – Topdog/Underdog garnered playwright Suzan-Lori Parks a Pulitzer Prize in 2002. Parks, who Newsweek called the “Halle Berry of the theater,” was awarded the MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant the previous year. The play follows two brothers, Lincoln and Booth, who live together in a dingy oneroom apartment. Their names (their father’s idea of a joke), give some idea of the deepseated antagonism and bond between the siblings. The older brother, Lincoln, has given up a successful street hustle playing three-card monte to don whiteface and play the role of Abraham Lincoln in an arcade. His younger brother Booth attempts to learn the tricks of his brother’s former trade, though
Stephen Rider and Jed Reynolds star in “Topdog/Underdog,” opening September 30.
he lacks Lincoln’s facility with cards. Topdog/ Underdog makes excellent use of three-card monte as a metaphor for the experience of these two brothers, who undergo constant gambles and reversals of fortune in their search for the American dream.
The Cape May Stage production will feature the same actors and director who have just performed the piece to rave reviews at the Fremont Centre Theatre in Los Angeles. James Reynolds, best known for his long-

“Topdog/Underdog” Interview ? From Page 27 standing role as Mayor Abe Carver in Days of Our Lives, directs Jed Reynolds and Stephen Rider as they play brothers Lincoln and Booth, respectively. Exit Zero spoke with the actors before their departure for Cape May to learn more about their interpretation of the play. What were your initial reactions to the script? Jed: I first read the script in college, almost 10 years ago, and it blew my mind. You usually have to see a play to understand it. This was one of the few plays where in reading it I could really see it happening. It has strong characters, brave dialogue, and real poignancy. I think it’s the best play of this century so far. Stephen: I saw this play a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. It’s not so different from Hamlet or a Greek tragedy. In a lot of plays people are dealing with difficult topics and killing each other, and if you look in a newspaper, you’ll see that these are universal conflicts. Topdog/Underdog uses 21st century language, but the story is the same. It looks next door and examines family problems on a daily basis. In theater we have the ability to articulate those types of stories. This play
Stephen Rider polishes his card skills as Booth.
just happens to be articulated in an amazing way. Did either of you immediately relate to one character over the other? Jed: I totally identified with Lincoln. It seemed to me like he was the protagonist, though you can’t really break the play down this way. I think he’s more similar to me as a person. I wasn’t sure which part I’d have, though, so I started doing a lot of work on Booth. I really get Booth now. I have a better perspective on how the themes work, where the laughs and pauses come in on both sides. Stephen: When I was at UCLA I worked
on two scenes as Lincoln. I think I can do either. I’ve been a person like Booth who has never gotten his due, and like Lincoln I’ve been in places where I try to avoid my past. Lincoln and Booth are the head and tails of the same coin. They’re the same person because they’re from the same background. It’s just that Lincoln is the older sibling and Booth’s father figure. He has to do things differently. What’s the audience response like? Stephen: The response has been overwhelmingly positive. People of all ages and backgrounds are coming up crying, laughing. We get standing ovations. They’re calling it the number one play in the city. Jed: If we as actors can connect to the truth, no matter what the topic, people are going to relate. There’s not a lot of great art coming out right now. Movies are cookiecutter. If you want to be challenged, go to the theater. Especially because we’re in a film town in LA, the positive energy we’re getting is a beautiful thing and a testament to great theater. Did you pick up any card skills in rehearsal? Jed: Well, I had to work on the cards every day. It was one of the first things I started doing. I probably wouldn’t take it out on the

“Topdog/Underdog” Interview ? From Page 28 street, but 20 feet away on stage I’ll fool you any day of the week. Stephen: He’s being modest. I must commend Jed because he’s doing a great job and the patrons have been so enthusiastic. One review spoke specifically about his cards. Mr. Reynolds told Jed in the beginning that he had to practice. He told me not to touch the cards. What do you think the play is about? Jeb: It’s about two brothers dealing with life as it comes to them. But they’re dealing with it the best way they know. It’s about the love and the frustration. Stephen: It’s also about identity. In our reality TV society, unfortunately, everything is about personal branding. People in general have a hard time being themselves. Booth and Lincoln lost both parents very young, and you realize these people don’t really understand who they are until they get older. When you don’t know who you are, you just react, and you take that out on those around you. There’s a saying: Hurt people hurt people. We don’t mean to, but we don’t know how to deal with it. These brothers definitely never went to a therapist. How do you deal? That’s the question we’re trying to answer.
Jed Reynolds plays two Lincolns at once.
Jed: And it’s about the American dream. To be poor and hurting in this country. Especially because we’re in a full-on depression. Every time we do it we find something new. To what extent is this a play about race? Stephen: Of course the play deals with race, but it goes beyond that, and to stop there does it a disservice. At the end of the day we’re more alike as people than we are different. Our thoughts are still articulated in the same themes, which are love, hate,
lust, and fear. Topdog/Underdog deals with identity across the board. What are we creating when we build an American dream that all citizens can’t take part in? What happens to Generation X, the people left behind? Jed: If you talk about this as a black play, it can become inaccessible. It handles universal themes. When you watch a fight between brothers onstage, you feel that with your own brother, regardless of your background. Stephen: A woman came up to me after the play and said, “At the end of play, I realized that your character Booth reminded me of my brother. I started to cry, because that’s what we’re dealing with in our relationship.” If we can get that kind of response, we’re doing our job right. What do you expect from Cape May? Jed: I’ve heard lots of good things. That it’s a town with great architecture and food. Stephen: I’m expecting some good food and some Cape May hospitality. We’re very excited. We want to take this show to another level. We guarantee the audience will enjoy it. If not, they’ll get their money back – Jed’s paying. For reservations and information, call Cape May Stage on (609) 884-1341 or visit www.capemaystage.com. The Robert Shackleton Playhouse is on Lafayette Street at Bank.

I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
ALWAYS follow the rules. I wear my seatbelt. I f loss. I don’t play hooky or kiss on the first date. I’ve had one tattoo, and it came from a box of Cocoa Puffs. I’ve never been a rebel, at least not until recently. Goody-goody that I am, I’ve been a good fit for fine dining, where there are plenty of rules to follow. I serve plates on the left side only, and clear from the right. I say “Cape May water” instead of “tap water.” I’m told to smile, so I plaster one on no matter how cranky or, if I’ve been to the Boiler Room, hungover I’m feeling. But there’s one thing that always puts me into a funk. There are never enough teaspoons. By seven o’clock on a Saturday night, I’m not in the dining room decanting wines and reciting specials as I should be. I am, instead, on a recon mission for silverware, ravaging the dish pit with the fury of a Parisian commoner storming the Bastille. Eventually, buried under a pile of bread plates and chicken bits, I find the coveted and elusive cutlery. It’s the Holy Grail of dessert service. I do my best Doberman
impression, growling at the other servers who’ve spotted my find. I roll up my sleeves and get to work at the sink, my blood pressure rising as surely as the pastry chef’s chocolate tarts. I picture my customers, who’ve been waiting 20 minutes for a single espresso or Tiramisu, tapping their watches and branding their comment cards with scathing reproofs about incompetent service. And so, finally, I make a vow. No more digging through sea bass skins and soggy calamari. I take a stand – the fine dining equivalent of burning my bra. I serve a decaf coffee not with a teaspoon, but a big, whopping, oval-shaped soup spoon.
It doesn’t fit on the saucer. It barely fits in the cup. I put the coffee in front of my guest and brace myself. In a restaurant whose patrons complain because the gentleman at table two is wearing jeans (God forbid!), this is a big deal. The light from the table’s candle bounces across the spoon’s silver handle, accentuating this blatant affront to proper coffee etiquette. The guest, a grayhaired lady dripping in costume jewelry, looks at me as though I have a Cocoa Puff tattoo across the center of my forehead. I shrug my shoulders, knowing I’ve crossed over to the dark side. If spoons are the gateway f latware, God only knows what’s next for me. Saying “tap water?” Clearing plates from the wrong side? I might as well buy a motorcycle and a pack of smokes right now. I’m a radical, a mutineer. Maybe I’ll dye my hair black and start listening to angry pop music, a little Alanis Morissette, perhaps. After all, in the restaurant, it often is like ten thousand knives when all you need is a spoon, or something like that…

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
REMEMBER when all of this was trees. There were trees where Congress Hall is, trees where the boardwalk is, trees where the beach is. There were even trees where the trees are. But they were grand trees, not like the flimsy arboreal wretches we see around us today. They were redwoods so huge the word ‘giant’ didn’t apply. They were ginormous. And they were so red that word was in no way able to describe their color: they were russet. Our Ginormous Russetwoods stood 300 feet tall, and it would take a man a half-day to walk around the base. Giant bears lived in the bases, then whole colonies of sloths and Indians in the lower branches, then millions of squirrels and, finally, colonies of eagles. Of course, they were just the thing needed when we decided to build The Great White Elephant Wonder of Cape May. Modern histories have gotten this all wrong, and describe a humble wooden pachyderm on a little hill. The true Elephant took us 30 years to construct, from the felled trunks of our russetwoods. When complete it was a
mile long and twice that in height, and only the sturdiest of Lenapes could brave the temperatures and lack of air when finishing the very top and putting the burnished copper tips on the tusks, each of which was made from the ivory of an African nation, and long enough that the Cape May Winter Olympic ski team used them to practice on. When done, we realised that the inside was so spacious that we had a few options. We held a public ballot, the choices being: (a) the entire city could be relocated inside; (b)

a World’s Fair would be held; (c) we would punch oar holes and prepare for the day The Deluge came and we would all have to sail for safety; (d) lure the citizens of Wildwood inside with promises of candy and trinkets and seal the door forever. As it happened, on the night of the vote, a poorly fashioned lock on the cage housing my African Wood Boring Beetles decided for us: I had been training them to eat timber to orders, allowing me to create perfect tiny wooden sailboats and incredibly detailed whittling work. They would be handed miniature plans, writ on tiny pieces of slate using a needle, and carry out the work. In this instance, lacking a plan, they merely ate and ate and ate. To my chagrin, all that was left of the Elephant by morning was a colossal mound of sawdust and a dozen house-sized beetles. Well, we were less than happy, but we Cape Marys have always prided ourselves on making the best of things and so we had us a barbecue of unimaginable proportions and used the sawdust as foundations of what is now The Point.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover
I
An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz
T’S no secret that I’ve had my share of cocktails in Cape May. Some of my best moments have been at 19 Jackson Street, at the Mad Batter enjoying a strawberry cosmopolitan (prepared by Bob or Joanne), and engaging in great conversation. But, aside from the tasty drinks, I’ve also met a lot of fantastic people while sitting at the ice stone bar. I’m a very loyal patron, so when the Mad Batter renovated their interior, I felt a bit wistful. I missed the intimate atmosphere of the original setup, but absolutely fell in love with the open, airy vibe of the new bar, which definitely can accommodate more incredible people to hang out with during their happy hour (4-6pm). Emily Buehrle designed the layout of the new bar area, keeping the unique spirit of the Mad Batter while utilizing more environmentally-friendly materials. The results are perfection, complete with a striking mosaic backdrop. I love seeing the owners of the Mad Batter and Caroll Villa Hotel, Mark and Pam Kulkowitz, greeting the patrons,
circulating through the crowd of thirsty and hungry Cape Mayniacs, always with a warm, friendly smile and a story to tell. I believe I’ve had at least two conversations with Mark about his Chihuahuas (Chihuahua owners seek each other out). The dining area walls are adorned with local artists’ exhibits available for purchase, as is the gallery room, which offers more three-dimensional art. I absolutely love the idea of supporting local artisans and displaying their work here.
Upcoming displays include Steve Grison, Steve Bradway, and Neil McPheeters in the main dining room from October 20-November 24, and Marie Natale from November 24-January 5. Gorgeous mosaics by Marta and Pam Kulkowitz and Robyn and Melannie Huber exhibit in the gallery room on October 24. The Mad Batter is no stranger to live entertainment and events. Go back to school this autumn and sign up for a class at the Mad Batter Beer School. Each class is $25 and includes five beer samples and treats. Upcoming schedule includes: Microbrews (10/17), Flying Fish (11/21), and Sam Adams (12/19). All classes are on Sundays at 2pm. Live music is a staple on the weekends. Check out Geno White on Friday nights in October and Joe Lynch, Blondage, Erik Simonson, Class Act, and Robin & Amy on Saturdays. Excellent food, unique drinks, cool décor, and stellar entertainment — it’s no secret that I love the Mad Batter – I have great memories there, and many more to come!

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m enjoying the new Customer Service column in Exit Zero (though The Answer Lady is still my favorite). Do you want to add to the discussion? – Out to Dinner Dear Out A few thoughts off the top of the Answer Lady’s head: dining out is one of the pleasures of a civilized society, and the rules of engagement apply to both diner and server alike. Diners: While “the customer is always right,” please do not forget that you are also a guest, and should behave accordingly. If you have a negative experience, discuss the situation with a manager or owner. Do NOT confuse this advice with the suggestion that you fume silently, stiff your server, leave unsatisfied, and immediately post an anonymous rant on your favorite website. Certainly
the Answer Lady wants to encourage the writer in all of us, but trust her when she says that the world isn’t waiting with bated breath for you to expound upon your latest gastronomical adventure. Do not take it out on your server if you are angry with your dining companion, your boss, your spouse, or the idiot who stole your parking spot. Or with the chef, for that matter – bad meals happen to good people, and the simple law of averages dictates that we will not be rapturous about every single meal we eat for as
MaryAnn’s CONTEMPORARY & ESTATE JEWELRY
long as we live. Servers: Never ask a solitary diner “Just one?” It implies that there’s something pathetic about dining alone, when in reality, people dine alone for any number of reasons, including that they like it. If you don’t know something, don’t fake it – find someone who does know. Never, ever forget who pays your bills, and adjust your attitude accordingly. Some customers will present a challenge, and others will be a piece of cake. This is a metaphor for life. Dear Answer Lady, I’ve got a peeve with an otherwise wonderful husband. We speak a couple of times a day on the phone while working. It seems like every time he calls me, he’s eating. He says no big deal, I say it’s rude. Please tell him I’m right. – Earful Dear Earful You’re right. We’ve probably all answered a call on the f ly while eating, but to pick up the phone and dial out while one has got a mouthful is thoughtless at best. Next time, ask him to call back after lunch. And if he’s really otherwise wonderful, count your blessings, dear.

Renaissance Festival Promises Fun, Fire-Eating
A
Access to Art assembles a rich program of courtly entertainment
CCESS to Art holds its first Cape May Renaissance Festival on October 2 and 3 on a 40-acre vineyard in West Cape May. The festival features 21 acts including music, magic, theater, poetry, and a Renaissance court. The court hails from the era of Elizabeth I, a patron of the arts who sponsored theater, poetry, rhetoric, and music. Elizabeth played the lute, loved to dance, and studied all the courtly arts of the era. “The festival is filling up with acts designed to delight children of all ages. We have Felix the Bubble Meister, who has been making bubble machines since 1983,” said Barbara Beitel, Access to Art director. “My machine is constructed using technology from the time period, a bellows and a simple lever. It only requires muscle power to make it work,” Felix Castegna said. Another entertaining act will be Lucas the Magician, a Franklinville man who does blade-swallowing. In his spare time, he eats fire and sets his tongue alight. “For light entertaining, he juggles, which will be
easier on your heart conditions than swallowing swords or eating fire,” Beitel said. Singing sweetly through all this mayhem and magic will be A Couple of Note, who have performed at the New York Renaissance Festival and the Medieval Festival. On Saturday, Rowan’s Collegium Musicum will make an appearance with period instruments and music. Another featured musical group is Renaissonics. Led by John Tyson, this ensemble performs
in England, France, Canada and the US, and their upcoming set in Cape May will include two costumed Renaissance dancers and a stilt-walker. “The festival showcases New York actors from East Lynne Theater Company, and regional actors from South Jersey Regional Theatre and the Ritz,” said Beitel. “A lot of our acts hail from South Jersey. We will have local crafters making lace, baskets, and glass bobbins,” she said. The autumn, when pumpkins and apples ripen, is the time to enjoy the harvest. “A harvest was always a time of celebration. Willow Creek Vineyard anticipates 2,500 bottles for next year’s consumption,” said Barbara Wilde, owner of Willow Creek. “Next year they can experience our wine at the festival.” she said. Spend two days at the Cape May Renaissance Festival and celebrate the arts with Access to Art. The event is located at the Willow Creek Farm on 168 Stevens Street and runs from 10-5pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and teens. For tickets visit www.accesstoart.org.

Activity Of The Week
L
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Surf’s Up!
ONG before Katy Perry, the Beach Boys made us all want to be California Girls. Growing up in the 1960s and ’70s, we played with Malibu Barbie, watched old Gidget movies, and dreamed of impressing the boys on our surf boards. Gidget – Kathy Kohner Zuckerman’s nickname was a combination of “girl” and “midget” – was a teenager when she learned to surf. Her adventures were chronicled by her father, Frederick Kohner, in his 1957 novel Gidget, The Little Girl With Big Ideas. In Gidget’s world, surfing is for the young. When Gidget meets the wise old man of the beach, the Big Kahoona, she describes him as “on the oldish side—around the end of the twenties or so.” Some surfers retain the notion that people over 50 are “too stiff in the spine” to surf. But others recognize that surfing is a lifetime sport, and learning to surf as an adult is not uncommon. You can try surf camp at Ocean Outfitters in Wildwood, take formal lessons, or seek the advice of a patient, experienced surfer.
Before you hit the beach, you need to determine whether you are “goofy” or “natural.” A “goofy-foot” surfer puts her right foot forward. To test, slide down a hallway in your socks – whichever foot is first is the foot that you’ll put in front on the surf board. Next, lie down and practice “popping” up to your feet a few times. Ready? Plunge in, armed with a wide beginner board and a kind friend. I held the

board by the sides – the “rails” in surf-speak – faced the shore, and jumped on, letting the wave carry me in. I had been warned to lower my expectations, so for the first few tries, I rode in on my belly, to get the feel of the water. When I felt braver, I rose to my feet – and promptly fell off. Again. And again. Then I rode in an awkward crouch for a few feet before I fell off. Exhilaration! Now I see why people get up before dawn to dunk themselves in cold water. Look for a relatively empty beach, because, as a beginning surfer, you are a hazard to others. Space is easier to come by in the autumn, but the same hurricanes that delight experienced surfers will work against you as you learn, so be cautious. No matter how awkward you are, surfing can make you feel graceful. And, even in your failures, you may inspire a youngster. As one young surfer said, “Seeing older people surf takes the pressure off. I don’t have to learn it all at once.” Wise words, Moondoggie. Next week: Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum

“Berkeley Square” Entertains, Then Enlightens
W
This October 1, the audience talks back to ELTC performers
HEN you’ve seen a good play, you’re often left with more questions than answers. On October 1, the East Lynne Theater Company will set those quandaries aright. Where else have these actors performed and how did they become part of Berkeley Square? How does ELTC’s artistic director Gayle Stahlhuth choose a show and a season? How and why do actors even do what they do? Audience members will have the opportunity to ask these and other questions of the talented ten-member cast this Friday, immediately following the award-winning East Lynne Theater Company’s production of Berkeley Square. ELTC seeks out rarely produced American plays that speak to today’s audiences, and this play is no exception. The response to the original 1929 production was stupendous, including Brooks Atkinson’s review in The New York Times where he wrote: “Berkeley Square is the finest play of the season – a play that casts a spell.” The piece has an even stronger pedigree, as it is based off acclaimed novelist Henry James’ unfinished

novel The Sense of the Past. The cast has a wide range of backgrounds. New to ELTC is Michael Kirby, who plays the time-traveler, Peter Standish, a man who inherits an ancestral home in London’s Berkeley Square and is summarily thrown back in time to the end of the American Revolution. Once there, Standish becomes enamored of several women from this earlier era. Michael has worked extensively in California at the Mark Taper Forum and LA Theatre Works.
TREE OF LIFE
Vibrantly colored, steam-bent wood on a solid copper framework of trunk and branches. The textured wooden leaves add warmth to any decor making it the focal point of any room.
The three ladies who captivate Standish are Erin Callahan, in the present, and two sisters in the past played by Megan McDermott and Emily Cheney. Erin was in ELTC’s You and I. Megan appeared in ELTC’s Why Marry? and has also performed at The McCarter Theater. Emily, new to ELTC, has worked at The Walnut Street Theater and The Ritz Theatre Company. The brother of the two sisters in the past is portrayed by Drew Seltzer. Drew was in Tony and Tina’s Wedding in New York City. This is just a sampling of the wide cast of characters to grace the stage in Berkeley Square. To learn more about them, see the show, then stick around for the question and answer session to meet the performers. Tickets are $28 general admission; $23 for seniors and those with disabilities; and $13 for students. Children 12 and under are always free. For information and reservations, call (609) 884-5898 or visit the website: www.eastlynnetheater.com. ELTC performs at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Shows run Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
ROSCOE was surrendered to our shelter because his owners were moving. He is on the anxious side but turns into a friendly guy once he warms up to you. He likes to play and LOVES tennis balls. He is wary of other dogs so he would probably do best on his own, but if you have a pet bring it in to meet Roscoe – maybe they’ll get along. If you do choose to adopt Roscoe you’ll be very happy you did. Adoption fee is $95.
«
DUDLEY is a very friendly boy waiting for an active family to come and give him a new home. Since he is so young he is very energetic and will need training, as he can be a little on the rough side when playing. Otherwise, Dudley is a very affectionate guy who just wants to be sitting on someone’s lap. If you’re looking for a great family pet, stop in and check out Dudley today. Adoption fee is $95.
«
SKITTLES, along with Roscoe, was surrendered to our shelter because his owners were moving. He’s a wonderful older guy who loves to be around people and other dogs. He’s sweet and friendly and doesn’t mind a little roughhousing either. All he needs now is a home to call his own. We’re sure you’ll love this gentleman and will be happy to make him a part of your family. Adoption fee is $35.

YOYO is a good name for this pretty gray girl – one minute she wants to be petted, then she decides she would rather be left alone. Given how beautiful she is, she can get away with it. If you would consider an independant young girl who makes up in beauty what she lacks in manners, stop by and take a look at YoYo. Adoption fee is $70.
«
SQUIRRELY and his brother Chipmunk are virtually identical: they’re lively, friendly brown tabbies who are sweet as can be. They romp and climb, chase each other in circles, and generally keep busy. We’d sure like to see them go home together. If you can only take one, Squirrely’s adoption fee is $70.
«
ARIA may actually make you sing once you’ve seen her. She’s petite, alert, and she’s polydactyl, meaning she has extra toes on each paw! She likes to be petted, but is more interested in jumping off your lap and exploring! If you’re looking for an independent girl, stop by and see Aria! Adoption fee is $70.

“Sopranos” star Vincent Pastore is coming to Cape May Festival – preview by Tom Sims, festival director
W
E’RE excited to host two great film professionals at this year’s 10th Annual Cape May Film Festival. The first is veteran actor Vincent Pastore, who portrays a mob guy preoccupied with other-worldly creatures in Alienated. Best known for his work in The Sopranos as a character named Big Pussy, Pastore has also appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, from Goodfellas to Law & Order. He will receive the first-ever Robert Prosky Character Actor Award, given in honor of Cape May’s favorite character actor, Bob Prosky. It was Prosky who said, “I’m the actor whose name you don’t know but whose face you instantly recognize.” Prosky had a great career in television, film, and stage, many times playing a character role that worked beautifully for the film. He died in late 2008. At last year’s Festival, Academy Award-nominated director Michael Mann gave a moving tribute to Prosky. The Character Actor Award, a rare honor in this industry, was created last year to remember Prosky and recognize an actor contributing

Also joining us at the Festival is Greg Henry, an independent filmmaker who has been nominated for an Emmy award and has had a short but accomplished career in film and television. Henry began his career with Academy Award-winning documentarian
Charles Guggenheim before moving to New York to work with journalist Bill Moyers, He spent five years with Moyers, including a year as a producer on the weekly series NOW. He has since continued to produce films and series for PBS, The History Channel, Discovery, and major broadcasters. Henry’s film work includes Water World: Bangladesh’s Environmental Crisis, Afghanistan: Behind the Photo, and the television series, Hard Time. His father, Ed Henry, has long been a supporter of the Cape May Film Festival as a past president as well as an overall philanthropist and owner of Harpoon Henry’s, with wife Teresa. The spirit of doing good must run in the family. One of Greg Henry’s first requests was to have an opportunity to speak with students at the local schools about filmmaking, which we will do at Teitelman. We have received a great selection of films this year, and we’re selecting only the best ones to screen during the weekend of October 22-24, exclusively at the Chalfonte Hotel. If you’d like to volunteer, don’t hesitate to email capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

EXT weekend, Cape May Forum asks “Can Humor Save The World?” and Cape May Stage has programming on the main-stage and Second Stage that prepares us to answer that question. Topdog/Underdog previews tonight and opens tomorrow with a gala after-party at Carneys on Beach Drive where audience members can meet the actors and production team. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awardwinning play uses humor to address some very serious issues about power dynamics, race and sibling rivalry. The language is raw and vibrant. The issues are gripping. The characters are dynamite. Playwright SuzanLori Parks won a “Genius Award” from the MacArthur Foundation. There is so much excitement leading up to the opening of this cutting edge play. Two brothers deal with shifting identity and betrayal. Humor is the key element used in making these street characters appealing so that an audience can identify and root for them. Shakespeare used this same device in Henry IV – Parts 1 and 2 so that thieves and cowards in the tavern scenes become lovable clowns though their deeds are contemptible, and Aristotle tells us that in a comedy the people on stage are like us but less than us. Theses issues will be further developed in discussions and analysis of how humor is used in Topdog/Underdog during Cape May Forum next week. Another edgy look at a serious subject comes to the Robert Shackleton Playhouse when Killadelphia takes the stage this Monday, October 4. In the summer of 2008,
“Killadelphia,” playing one night only, has been hailed, “A must-see epic event” by NYTheatre.com. (Right) Arlette deMonceau Michaelis wrote “Beyond The Ouija Board” about her experience as a teenager in occupied Belgium during WWII. Philadelphia was in the midst of a murder epidemic that put it on par with some third world countries. Sean Christopher Lewis takes an unflinching look at the causes of the crime rate and its effects on the community. It has been described as “a mixtape of a city” and the New York Press called the piece “explicitly authentic”. It is the perfect companion piece to the gritty Topdog/Underdog and uses humor in much the same way to distance the spectator so they can absorb the true meaning and message of the author. The solo play is at 8pm and tickets are $20. The following night Cape May Stage will be honoring Arlette deMonceau Michaelis who wrote Beyond The Ouija Board about her experience in World War II as a teenager in occupied Belgium. Dr. Ron Goldstein brought Ms Michaelis to the attention of Cape May Stage. Although there is little funny about Nazis

occupying one’s country, Arlette Michaelis filters her experience through the eyes of a rebellious teenager, and her awesome courage is at times quite funny. Ms Michaelis has been lecturing about this experience for many decades and her students are more likely to remember these stories than the lessons she taught as a teacher for the last thirty years. This evening is absolutely free and Ms Michaelis will be presented with a plaque for her great service. Tickets to all of these programs can be reserved at www.capemaystage.com or by calling (609) 884-1341. In all of the above programs, violence and serious issues are endured through the use of humor. Cape May Stage joins with Cape May Forum to ponder the question “Can Humor Save the World?” The question may be more important than the answer.

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle created by us! By Dan Mathers. SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword all deal with the theme of this week’s issue, which is trees. 36 Great Things To Do In Cool Cape May
Think you’ve seen Cape May? Think again. Consult our list for some fresh ideas. 1. Morey’s Piers The Wildwood Boardwalk is now home to the biggest attraction the Jersey Shore has seen in years. The Ghost Ship, unveiled Memorial Day Weekend, is a one-of-a-kind haunted attraction featuring animatronics, a scary soundtrack and live actors. Wind your way through the maze-like course of a wrecked ship that appears it has crashed right into Morey’s Piers, and do it soon – the Piers close after October 10. 2. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a quaint seaside town. Then make sure you explore bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins. For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. 3. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see a whale. Tours take off at Wilson Avenue. You can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 4. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt*
Explore Cape May and uncover its architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour. Bird Droppings
O
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
H, I HATE it. I hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it... And in case you miss the import of this disclosure, let me spell it out for you: I HATE IT. Hate sitting here at this #$%^& computer while every other Tom, Dick and birder is out there in a morning that is just saturated with birds. A cold front cleared last night. Winds were light and northwest. Skies were cleared. An avalanche of warblers, thrushes and other feathered what-nots took this opportunity to migrate south, jam up along the Cape May peninsula, and fall out south of the Cape May Canal. There they vied for perch space. Made trees and bushes animate. Stopped traffic. Scrambled weather radar. Turned day into night. Signaled the apocalypse. It was a migratory fallout of near-biblical proportions. And I am sitting here at this computer. Because I have promises to keep. Duties to perform. The burden of leadership. The weight of the world upon me. Not to men-
tion a stupid deadline for a stupid column for which I garner not even a dollop of pleasure or gratification – except for Exit Zero, of course – much less a single, stinking fan letter, which I would gladly read and answer! I know I’m ranting. But once there was a time when I was happy, free, unfettered of this ambition,
this killing task. Not a slave to fashion, or dignity, or image. I went birding whenever I wanted. Grabbed my binoculars and went out the door. Free as a freaking bird. I reveled in fallouts. Wrapped my mind around avian deluges so monumental that any effort at disclosure even approximating reality would brand me a liar. Fallouts with warblers so thick you could not bring a binocular to bear on a single bird. Fallouts so thick that driving down Sunset Boulevard, you didn’t just hit birds crossing the road, they were pinging off the sides of your car. Fallouts so bird-riddled that people in the field had to be careful where they stepped, open windows meant birds in the house, and feral cats didn’t need to stalk – they just opened their mouths and ovenbirds queued up. But now.... Alas, and curse my rotten, mismatched luck.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 Here I sit in a stupid office. Getting reports from the field, noting text messages about who’s seeing what and what I’m missing. Wood Stork over Cape May Point... Wood Stork now reported over Cape Henlopen... Getting salt-in-the-wound queries from colleagues and ex-friends. “Hey. What are you doing here? Don’t you know that there’s a whopping fallout in Cape May?” Oh drat, drat, drat, drat, drat, drat, drat. Curses, curses, curses, curse, curses, curses. <&>!~!!@@%*)%#%#!!! What God did I offend? How do I get back in the good graces of the universe? Why did I get dressed in the dark? I mean if I’d only turned the light on, I would have seen that the socks were mismatched. One tan, one blue. I mean, how could a person with even a shred of dignity be seen in public like this. Makes you want to hide in your office and write at the computer (and wish it was warm enough to go sockless). Don’t let anything get in your way of experiencing a fallout of birds (and Monarch butterf lies) like we’ve been experiencing in Cape May. Work will always be there, but birds move and often quickly!
If you want to know what’s happening in the natural world, contact the Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) – THE place for anything to do with nature. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point, the center is open 9:30am-4:30pm daily. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need. Check out the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s Bayshore Summer and Kevin Karlson’s beautiful Birds of Cape May), bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise – including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Take a look at the sightings log to check what’s being seen, pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books about nature (available at the CMBO) he has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
