The Police Blotter
WEST PALM BEACH, Florida – A 30-yearold man who was badly beaten by his roommate told investigators the clash began as he munched wild berries in his bedroom. The roommate confronted him, contending the berries belonged to his girlfriend.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “The sharper is the berry, the sweeter is the wine.” Proverbs “Doubtless God could have made a better berry than the strawberry, but doubtless God never did.” William Allen Butler “What will come from the briar but the berry?” Irish Proverb “Better than any argument is to rise at dawn and pick dew-wet red berries in a cup.” Wendall Berry “The merry year is born like the bright berry from the naked thorn.” Hartley Colridge “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry.’” John Lennon “One must ask children and birds how cherries and strawberries taste.” Johann von Goethe
THE William Weightman cottage was originally constructed on the corner of Washington and Franklin streets. In 1881, the building’s namesake, Mr. Weightman, decided to purchase one of the Columbia Hotel lots and have his large cottage moved there. He chose the front parcel on the corner of Ocean Street and Beach Drive, to provide his family the very best ocean views available. Since he lived in Philadelphia during the off-season, he hired local workers to accomplish the job. Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
BACCIFEROUS A plant that bears true berries is said to be bacciferous. There are many species of plants that produce fruit that are similar to berries, but are not actually berries, and these particular plants are said to be baccate.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook. com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
DESPITE the clipart on the cover, strawberries are not actually a berry. A berry is a fruit formed from a single ovary, whereas the strawberry is a fruit covered in ovaries. Strawberries are an accessory fruit, whereas the unlikely watermelon is in fact a berry.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “When two men in a business always agree, one of them is unnecessary.” J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with Moo Shu pork. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
M
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
EMORIAL Day weekend, as even the most foolish of fools knows, marks the start of the summer season. It tends to serve as a barometer for the rest of the season, so a good start is of utmost importance to the restaurateurs and merchants of Cape May who rely on a steady inf lux of tourists throughout the summer. Over the past couple of years a dreadful economy has caused Cape May a significant amount of pain, so many of us spent the past week prepping for the season while crossing our fingers and praying it went well. So, how is this season shaping up? As Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce President, there are few people in a better position to ref lect on how the weekend went than John Cooke. We caught up with John and asked him to be a Monday morning quarterback and review the holiday weekend and the start of the summer. Lucky for all, John was extremely optimistic. “I think it was great,” John said, “Definitely much better than last year.” Hotels are an important indicator of a successful weekend. Full rooms tends to lead to full shops, bars and dining rooms. “All the way from the Jetty out to Le Mer and then to Cape Harbor, I didn’t see a single vacancy sign,” John told us. “I spoke with Kay over at the Carroll Villa, and she said that although they had to accept a few shorter stays, they managed to sell out all three nights. So, It seems that while people are having to work for it, they are having success.” And it wasn’t just hotels. “We had a great weekend,” ref lected Jennifer Negro,
owner of Tisha’s. “I mean that seriously. Friday was a little slower, but Saturday and Sunday were great. I don’t think that the there-and-a-half star review in The Press of Atlantic City this Sunday hurt either – it was perfect timing.” Joe Bogle, owner of The Original Fudge Kitchen, seemed just as happy. “All of our old friends we’ve been missing all summer came back. It was very crowded, especially at night. We have stores in Ocean City, Stone Harbor, Wildwood and Cape May and they were all really busy. I was out Sunday night giving out samples on the Washington Street Mall and the place was mobbed,” Joe told us. All of this seems to be a good omen for the coming season. It may not be as ripe as we remember back in 2006-’07, before the economic bubble burst, but there is a lot more to be optimistic about than in 2008’09. “I think the season is looking very promising,” John said. “People are going to stay within a tank of gas from their homes, and Cape May is within a tank of gas from all of New Jersey, parts of New York and the majority of Eastern Pennsylvania.”
IT’S the beginning of June, which can only mean one thing. Actually, it can mean quite a lot of things but if you’re on this island, it means the annual West Cape May Strawberry Festival. It’s being held this Saturday, June 4, which means you get to feast on the utterly delicious Jersey strawberry. And truly there is nothing tastier than local produce which hasn’t been subjected to artificial preservation and hasn’t passed through much more than one or two pairs of hands. So get yourself along to the small but perfectly-formed Wilbraham Park and enjoy strawberries in their most naked form, or on strawberry shortcake. There will also be lots of non-strawberry related business, such as antique stalls and, drum roll, an Exit Zero booth, where our man Jon Roth will be selling some choice produce from our store, along with some ridiculously cheap bargains. And a word of warning… if you plan to drive there, don’t. Or, if you DO, do not park on Park Boulevard, because it’s illegal. A bike lane runs the length of that street and even if you see other cars parked, don’t be tempted, otherwise an army of yellowshirted Class II cops will descend like carrion after roadkill. ANYONE with taste buds should be excited about this year’s Cape May Forum program: “The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” The folks at CMF are hosting a Big Night at Cape May Winery this Saturday. Guests can tour the winery, sample the wine bar, snack on hors d’oeuvres and take part in a live auction hosted by Jack Wright. Call (609) 770-2626 to reserve your ticket. See you there.

Greg Bennett Exhibits At SOMA Gallery
S
The latest addition to SOMA’s stable of artists brings his impressions of the shore to Cape May
OMA NewArt Gallery will feature a solo exhibition of paintings by Greg Bennett from June 3 to July 31, with a Reception for the Artist on June 25 from 6-9PM. Greg Bennett is inspired by the land and sea vistas of the coastal barrier islands of the South Jersey Shore. This exhibition will highlight a series of paintings reflecting the various seasons of his favorite places. Bennett’s paintings are brilliant creations of light and color, resulting in emotionally compelling compositions. Bennett often work en plein air, exploring the energy of a particular setting, the beginning of a “journey that may take anywhere from a week to a year,” says Bennett. The execution of a painting demands constant decision-making. “Every stroke results from a deliberate thought process that includes many elements: color, value, shape, texture and even personality; and, more importantly, each brush stroke must also relate to every square inch of the composition.” Some areas of the paintings are often removed and re-painted, resulting
Bennett’s oil on linen composition, “North East View,” presents a dynamic seascape. in Greg’s signature technique. Greg Bennett studied at the York Academy of Arts in York, Pennsylvania and the Gloucester Academy of Fine Arts in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Influenced by the American Impressionists of the late 19th and 20th century, Bennett paints his subjects
concentrating on light and brushwork to create a particular scene. Bennett’s paintings are exhibited extensively in galleries throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Greg’s exhibit opens June 3 at SOMA NewArt Gallery, 31 Perry Street, 0pen daily 10am to 10pm. For details, call 898-7488.

Name: Christina (Tina) Garvin Workplace: Celebrate Cape May Age: You’re NOT putting my age in Exit Zero! Say 29 and holding. Hometown: I’m from North Cape May. How long have you worked here? This’ll be my 13th year. Best thing about the job? It would have to be the great people that I work with – we’re like family. And of course our loyal customers! What do you recommend here? My favorite thing is the Luba T-shirts – they’re just great. And of course, our hermit crabs. What’s your OTHER dream job? I used to sing in a little band when I was little, so I’d have to say a rock star. Or at least an American Idol. Favorite thing about Cape May? My absolute favorite thing is to watch the sunset on the beach – it’s paradise. Interview by Kate Chadwick WANT TO NOMINATE AN EMPLOYEE OF THE WEEK? EMAIL KATE@EXITZERO.US.

EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about berries. This week’s winner is Sheryl Deares, 58, a sign language interpreter from Baltimore, Maryland. We found Sheryl and her companions strolling along the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: What is your favorite kind of berry? Raspberry. What was the name of Tom Sawyer’s best friend? Huck Finn. Who wrote the 1972 hit “My Ding-a-ling?” Chuck Berry. Kathy wins a $50 gift certificate to The Original Fudge Kitchen for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! Chance Meetings
S
Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
ITTING down. I always seem to be sitting down when I’m being stood up. The plan was for Tanya to meet me at a restaurant on the mall. Seven o’clock. Ask the hostess for Everett. The plan seemed simple. Foolproof, even. Picked up a bottle of wine at Collier’s, pulled off the impossible by nabbing a choice mall-side parking space, strolled into the restaurant ten minutes early, told the hostess that my blind date would be looking for a guy named Everett, and sat down. The next half hour was spent perusing the menu, studying the wine’s label, fending off a waitress who wanted to uncork the bottle, twiddling my iPod. At 7:20 I’d had enough. The restaurant smelled delicious, but I had no intention of dining alone. Thus was a perfectly good two hours of parking wasted. Tanya has a different version. She claims that she was there, that she told the hostess she was there for a blind date, and then she waited outside. Maybe that’s true, but I’m not completely convinced. I never saw anyone waiting outside the restaurant,
and the hostess would have had to be utterly incompetent to not match up the only two blind date singles in the place, and from my table I could see that the only people who came through the door were couples. And so I sat as I was stood up. I’ve been stood up on the mall before. The last time it was by Robin, a nurse I’d met in the emergency room. She’d promised to meet me one afternoon outside the Whale’s Tale. And so there I sat on a bench until I finally
accepted that she wasn’t going to show up. (A couple of months later, a coworker visited that same emergency room, and when he came back he told me that Robin said hi. Come on, really?) I need a woman to explain the stand-up thing to me. What is going through your head when you do this to a guy? And isn’t it doubly rude? Not only is the woman saying that the man isn’t worth dating, but he’s not even worth telling that he’s not worth dating. I’ve said it before, but it clearly bears repeating: we are big boys. We can handle the truth. If you don’t want to go out, make a call, send us an e-mail, even a text would do. Then we don’t have to waste our time, and we won’t look like chumps sitting alone at a table for two. If you want to sit down for dinner, and definitely not be stood up, then join me. Send an e-mail to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. (Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t.) I promise I’ll be there.

Cape May Forum’s Big Night
T
Winery tours, wine tastings, art auctions and great music – don’t miss a very special evening!
HE Cape May Forum – Chautauqua at the Shore extends an invitation to the Cape May County community and its visitors for a special evening celebrating the launch of its 2011 program. Cape May Forum’s Big Night will be held at the Cape May Winery, 711 Town Bank Road, on Saturday, June 4 at 7pm. Tickets are now on sale by phone and on the CMF web site. All proceeds from this evening benefit the fall program, “Guess What’s Coming for Dinner? - The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” The June 4 rundown of activities will guarantee you a big night in a special setting. You can tour the Cape May Winery, one of the area’s top tourist attractions. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the winery with Toby Craig, proprietor, on one of two tours that evening. Visitors can also sample the wine bar. The vineyard has grown over the past two decades to produce some of South Jersey’s most distinguished wines. Blended wines, both dry and sweet, really hit the
mark, and are a specialty there. Guests will also enjoy a delicious variety of hors d’oeuvres as only the Washington Inn can serve them. There will also be an art auction at the event. Did you know the Cape May Forum has been running a New Jersey-wide poster competition? The winner of the contest
will be unveiled on the Big Night, and all juried work will be on sale at live and silent auctions. The live auction will be hosted by Jack Wright, Exit Zero Editor/Publisher. A limited-edition Politics of Food Art Poster will be the Cape May Forum’s gift to you. As if all this weren’t enough, you can dance to the sounds of the Bob Campanell Band on the winery’s newly opened terrace and fire pit, overlooking the vineyards. Cape May Forum – Chautauqua at the Shore (CMF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 as a consortium of the region’s organizations and individuals. CMF provides an annual forum where creative and inspiring artists, speakers, events and courses are presented to further enhance the Cape May experience for residents and visitors alike. CMF aims to attract more visitors to Cape May by integrating and showcasing the existing cultural, artistic, and educational aspects of the community. For reservations and tickets, call 609770-2626, email info@capemayforum.org, or visit www.capemayforum.org.

Cape May Cooks
A new column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle
W
ELCOME to another week ly installment of the column that tries to answer that perpetual question – what can we make to eat? It needs to be fresh, delicious and not too time-consuming to prepare. Wonderful as Cape May restaurants are, we can’t eat out all the time! All summer we’ll be sharing with you some of our favorite recipes, easily prepared in most kitchens – full-time resident or not. One of the joys of a weekend in Cape May is brunch on the porch. Picture it: no one is in a hurry, the cushions are on the chairs and the morning freshness is still in the air, mixed with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Send someone out to pick up the newspaper while you put the finishing touches on the meal. We’re giving you a choice here of either preparing the main dish in the morning or assembling it the night before. That makes it SO easy to appear the effortless host. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out which one of us contributed the recipes for this column. In food, as in life, it’s more fun when you mix it up a bit! Shakshouka 20 minutes Shakshouka is an easy one-
pan meal of eggs poached in sautéed tomatoes, onions and peppers. Eat it with pita bread for brunch – or lunch or dinner, for that matter. The name is from the Hebrew word “leshakshek” meaning “to shake.” You can spice it with cumin and turmeric if you like, or go Italian with basil, oregano and garlic. Add eggplant or cauliflower. Whatever you do, make it yours! This simple treat responds well to customizing. 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 red or green bell pepper, seeded and chopped 2 ripe tomatoes, chopped salt and pepper 2 eggs (Optional: ½ jalapeno, chopped) In a medium non-stick frying pan (or large if making more), heat the oil and sauté the onion for about three minutes until it begins to soften. Add the peppers and continue to sauté for five minutes on a low flame. Stir in the tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes uncovered. Crack the eggs directly on top of the vegetables, as if to poach them, and cook until set, about four minutes. Note: for a lower-cholesterol version, use one whole egg

In a large skillet, cook and crumble sausage until no longer pink; drain. Add onions, squashes, salt and pepper to skillet. Sauté four minutes until vegetables are tender; stir in roasted red peppers. Drain and cool. Spread half the bread cubes in a lightly greased 13x9 baking dish. Top with half the sausage mixture and half of the cheese. Repeat bread, sausage and cheese layers. Whisk together the eggs and milk, and pour over the bread. Cover and chill eight hours. 2 ¼ c water or milk, or any mixture thereof ½ c uncooked grits (we prefer the old-fashioned, but you can also use the quick-cooking)
¼ tsp salt 4 oz cheddar cheese, or go wild and try gouda paprika In a saucepan, bring the water/milk and salt to a boil and slowly stir in grits. Cook 12-14 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add cheese and continue cooking until it melts, about three minutes. Serve with a little sprinkle of paprika. This weekend is the West Cape May Strawberry Festival. Try this dessert with your brunch dish. Make it with local strawberries and Cape May honey if you can! Strawberry Rhubarb Compote 20 minutes 1 quart fresh strawberries, hulled and halved or quartered, if large 3-4 stalks fresh rhubarb, trimmed and cut in 2” lengths 1 tsp candied ginger or 1” piece fresh ginger root, peeled and julienned 2 c orange juice 2 tbsp honey Put the strawberries, rhubarb and ginger in the bowl and add enough orange juice to cover half way. Add the honey, mix and cover with plastic wrap, being careful to cut holes in the top for the steam to escape. Microwave on high for 10 minutes until rhubarb is soft and let cool. Add more honey to taste if necessary. Serve warm or cool, with whipped cream, ice cream or strawberry sorbet if you like.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
AM greatly conflicted on the matter of berries. Some I love, some I am indifferent to and others I cannot abide. Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries fall into the former camp; gooseberries, elderberries and bearberries are the ones I care naught for one way or t’other; dingleberries and French berets I detest almost as much as I hate chimps that ride tricycles. In fact a chimp in a beret, riding a tricycle is really just about the most terrible thing I can imagine, and the chief reason for me never leaving home without a brace of throwing stars in my belt. Not that I have ever met such a foe, at least at the time of typing, but they come in handy in the event of bumping into anyone from Wildwood. Indeed, the basement of the D’Catur Mansion is home to several thousands of jars of preserves made from berries: the Late and only partially lamented Ma D’Catur was a huge fan of reaching for the pot and a box of empty jars whenever a particular thing was in season. If we were out for a walk and spotted some ripe strawber-
ries, the lady donned a pair of stout gloves and into a basket they went. That same walk would often yield a punnet of cranberries, a handful of rasps and at least one Shobie: all these were swiftly plucked, then hidden under a cheesecloth in the basket and bundled into the pot the moment we got home. We of course used a variety of different pots: mother was a purist and hated when a jar of strawberry jelly contained a gooseberry seed, a fragment of blackberry or a cufflink.
She also loved to have us children perform all of the manual labour in her berrying endeavors: there was no straggling cliffside vine too high to send us up, no thornbush too prickly to prod us into with the tip of the knobkerry she carried up her sleeve, and no boiling pot of berries too hot to dip us in to retrieve some imagined impurity/personal possession. Still, she was not ungenerous: for every one hundred jars sealed and carried (by us) to the deepest part of the basement (down three levels, turn left at the entombed Viking longship, pass the five cells of embalmed Napoleonic prisoners, and take a right at the Ark of the Covenant) we were allowed one lick of the mixing spoon. Just one lick, mind you: any more than that, and any perceived reluctance to release the sticky spoon from our grasping little mouths and Ma would seize the huge measuring ladle from the bubbling pot and almost tenderly rap us back and forth across the head with it until we let go. So, I say let us celebrate the new berry season! Wash those jars, polish those knobkerries!
Definitely not just your grandmother’s tearoom! Sure, you’ll find tasty tea sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and teabreads served with clotted cream, and that traditional, elegant service that you associate with fine dining. But there is so much more to The Carriage House. In addition to our traditional Tea Luncheon and Afternoon Tea, The Carriage House offers hearty fare from the café menu, plus homemade soups, and hearty wholesome entrée salads that fill you up while still letting you feel virtuous for eating a salad.
So try it today, and bring grandmom along, too…. She’ll love you for it!

Customer Service
T
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
HE restaurant where I work has undergone a lot of changes recently. People assume this means we’re trying to be hipper, or that we’ve been doing poorly, or any number of things. It’s easy to assume. I admit that I often make snap judgments about my Cape May customers. I’m a fine dining profiler. I assume that large groups of women won’t tip, or that they’ll “verbal tip” in lieu of leaving actual cash. I assume that French Canadians will not tip (because that’s the local stereotype), and a man on a first date will tip well over 20% to impress his girl. I assume that a girl who orders steak on a first date is out to prove she’s just one of the guys. If she orders something unusual, like raw sea urchin, she wants to showcase how adventurous she can be. And if she orders a house salad, it’s because she was so nervous before dinner, she ate her weight in Fudge Kitchen taffy. Elderly folks will tip only if there are mashed potatoes on the menu, the bartender is not out of Dewar’s, and I can keep
myself from making a face when I spot dentures on the bread plate. The dreadlocked hippie will ask me what’s organic. And the guest who asks about the score of the big game will be a meat-and-potatoes kind of fellow. I know; it is wrong to make snap judgments, but my customers do it, too. This week, I saw a Philadelphia Inquirere article that discusses a study which found that blonde waitresses consistently make 5% higher tips than their brunette co-workers, or at least this is the case at the sports bar where servers agreed to dye their hair and record gratuities from 300 shifts. The study backs up data from
the Psychology of Women Quarterly, which suggests that people pity blondes for being “less intellectually capable.” I am a blonde, and if pity is going to pay off my student loans, I’ll take it. It wouldn’t be the first time that I’ve hoped rash judgments of me would elicit some measure of pity. My first month on the job, every time I made a mistake, I told grumpy customers that it was my first night. And when a friend of mine discovered that the shiner she’d gotten from a softball to the eye was amping up tip money from compassionate guests who assumed she was a battered woman, she let them go ahead and assume. Perhaps all of this makes me shameless. But at least I can admit when I’m wrong. And I’m wrong a lot. My table of tattooed Harley riders might order a delicate tuna tiradito, and my French Canadians might actually tip. It happens. I sometimes have to remind myself that appearances can be misleading. It’s the same with a remodeled restaurant. Spiff it up or dress it down; it will always be what’s on the inside that counts.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady We have scrimped and saved for our dream wedding on the beach and a reception at The Grand Hotel this summer. I don’t know what to do about the RSVP I just got from my cousin. On the card, he checked off “will attend,” and then wrote in “with a guest”! I did not invite him with a guest; he isn’t married and doesn’t have a long-term girlfriend. We are budgeted down to the penny, and I can’t just have people strolling in with guests. What do I do? – Bride-to-Be Dear Bride First, let us look at the positives here: at least he RSVP’d, right? That’s not something always happens these days. And, it could have been worse; instead of “with a guest,” he could have RSVP’d thusly: “with my posse, the kitchen crew at the Pilot House.” But the Answer Lady digresses. Of
Wise answers to perplexing questions
be “I’m sorry we can only accommodate you; if you can’t make it, we’ll certainly miss you.” Remain firm! Dear Answer Lady My best friend is dating her second married man in as many years; actually, I should say separated, not married. I love her, but I feel like she’s wasting her time. Is it ever appropriate to date a man who is still technically married? – Her Friend
course as invited guests to a formal affair such as a wedding, we are not at liberty to alter invitations to our liking. The Answer Lady would nip this situation in the bud, and call her cousin to say “thanks, George, for your prompt response to our invitation (always reward good behavior), but we are on a really tight budget and can’t accommodate unanticipated guests. I’m sure you understand.” Only if George is a complete uh…tool, would he continue to insist on a guest. In which case, your response would
Dear Friend This question is a can of worms just waiting to be opened, but the Answer Lady will do her best with what you’ve given her. It may not be “appropriate” to date a married man, but if one is formally separated, there should not be an issue. The key here for your friend is to manage her expectations. If she is looking for marriage – or a commitment of any kind, really – a recently separated man is probably not her best bet. Not to say that all is lost, and love does work in mysterious ways, but it’s unlikely that a man who is just getting out of a major commitment will be ready to leap into another. Be her friend, which means being there if the whole thing falls apart.

JUNIOR Austin Parker is captain of the LCMR golf team. Not only has the 16-year-old led the team to a 12-7 record, but he also finished in the top 20 in the South Jersey golf tournament. The youngest son of Joann and Steve Parker has been involved in golf since the age of ten. His grandfather worked at a golf course and inspired Parker to begin playing. He has followed in the footsteps of his 19-year-old brother Shane, a former golf standout at LCMR. “Shane has given me encouragement, and I’ve always wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Parker said. Maintaining an average of 39.7 on the course takes a lot of dedication and practice. Most people struggle with the mental preparation that golf requires, but it seems to be something that Parker has managed to master. Parker has entered tournaments outside of school in the hopes of pursuing golf at the collegiate level. This year he won his first tournament in the Junior Golfers’ Association Tour. His immense dedication will surely bring him much success in his future scholastic and athletic career. PHOTO AND STORY BY BRANDI BROOKS

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: berries. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. ACROSS 2. This American guitarist and singersongwriter is well known for hits like “Johnny B. Goode” and “My Ding-A-Ling.” 3. His song “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” topped the Pop and R&B charts in 1974. 6. These are great for making wine, and are best served by a servant while you’re fanned with palm fronds. 7. You’ll never encounter this fruit in the wild, but if you lick Willy Wonka’s flavored wallpaper, you’ll know what we mean. 9. A delicious summertime dessert, and the name of a bonnet-clad character in 1980s TV specials. 11. This four-year school in Floyd County, GA, strangely does not offer a major in agriculture. 12. Depending on how you capitalize this word, it refers to a fruit or a smartphone. 13. This Scottish author and dramatist is best known for writing Peter Pan. 14. Berries are particularly rich in these molecules, which slow the production of free radicals and are thought to inhibit

cancer and heart disease. 17. You may know this actress from her CoverGirl commercials, but she had her first big break in E.T. 20. French for “perfect,” this snack is usually made up of layers of yogurt, granola and berries. 22. These berries are popular in Europe and make an excellent cordial, but they were banned in the US almost 100 years ago. 23. This musician is famous for performing the song which begins “Her name was Lola...” DOWN 1. This plant produces berries that make gin. 2. According to legend, our first president cut down one of these and couldn’t help but confess. 4. This actress won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Monster’s Ball. 5. Jams, jellies and marmalades are all types of this – some of the best kinds are made
from berries. 8. Tom Sawyer’s best friend, he was the son of the town drunkard. Twain described him as “idle, and lawless, and vulgar, and bad.” 10. Maine produces 25% of North America’s crop of these fruits, which are small, round, and feature a tiny “crown” at their top. 12. This agricultural establishment in West Cape May is named after a wild North American fruit that’s not quite as juicy as its Asian counterpart. 15. For the record: it’s not a vegetable, it’s a fruit. But it’s also a berry. 16. Name this fruit and some people might accuse you of stuttering. 18. Not bite-sized like most berries, you’d probably still enjoy a slice of this on a hot summer day. 19. “Here we go ‘round the ________ bush...” 21. This is a red fruit sometimes known as a hindberry. It’s also the term for an unvoiced linguolabial trill or “Bronx cheer.”

Activity Of The Week
R
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Pedal Pushers
IDING a bicycle is a gentle, lowimpact form of exercise. Like most exercises, biking has health benefits, such as strengthening the heart, improving balance, and boosting the immune system. Biking in Cape May has the added benefit of stress reduction – ride a bike, and you don’t have to find a parking place or wrangle with a hightech parking meter. The flat streets of Cape May are conducive to biking, whether or not you have a destination in mind. Use your bike to run errands, go to the theater or enjoy your dinner without worrying about parking. Cruise around the historic district. Pedal along Sunset Boulevard all the way to Sunset Beach, or turn off to the left and explore the bird-friendly borough of Cape May Point. Or, make a right and follow Bayshore Road to New England Road, and visit Higbee Beach. Wander the quiet back streets of West Cape May. Bring water, cash and a basket – you may find a roadside vegetable stand on one of the lonely roads. If you’re looking for a complete change
of scenery, take your bike on the Cape May – Lewes Ferry and explore the Delaware side of the bay. The fare for bicycles and riders is $10 one way or $18 round trip, the same as a foot passenger. Although you’re on vacation, you can’t disregard the rules of the road. Cape May can be dangerous for bikers. Even on roads
We have SO many ways you can get your feet wet.
with bike lanes, wear your helmet and keep the MP3 player out of your ears. Use a light at night, which falls faster than you might think. Bring – and use – your bike lock. I’d leave my keys in the car in Cape May before I’d leave my bike unlocked: tired thieves are highly motivated, and no bike is safe, not even a junky one. Forgot your bike? You can rent one, of course, by the hour, day or week, from one of several local vendors. Many will even deliver the bikes to your hotel or rental property. In addition to a regular bike, you can rent a twoseater or an alley cat – this tagalong bike is great for the child who can ride a two-wheeler but is too inattentive to ride alone. They’ll even supply a helmet and lock, too. Rent a trailing cart and you can bring everything you need for the beach and leave the car behind at the hotel. If you’d like to ride with a view of the water, bikes are allowed on the promenade, but only until 10am, so please observe this time frame. If you want to ride your bicycle, you’ll like Cape May. Next week: Smile for the Camera
This could be your view... we now rent stand-up paddleboards!
and we do days, too.

DAISY is sitting here at the shelter waiting for you to take her home. She might seem a little nervous, but in fact she’s a very sweet girl. Daisy is very good with kids and dogs, and she’s even okay with cats. You’ll have to take it a little slow with her at first, but once she gets to know you, she would make a great lap dog. If you think she may be the right dog for you, stop on by the shelter and give her a chance! Adoption fee is $95.
«
REDS is a handsome two-year-old gent waiting for the perfect person to come and rescue him. When he first arrived at the shelter he was covered in ticks and he was a bit on the timid side but now he has opened up and is friendly to everyone he meets. He does well with cats, dogs and kids. All that’s needed now is someone to come and give him a chance to have a good life. Adoption fee is $95.
«
BUCKY & SHERRY have had a difficult time. Their owner passed away and they were brought to the shelter because no one would care for them. They have remained very affectionate and sweet dogs who get along with everone they meet. These two doggies need someone to give them a fresh new start. Because Sherry and Bucky are so bonded they must be adopted together. Adoption fee is $95 for both.

HUMPHREY just loves attention. His previous owners moved away and left him behind. He’s also FIV positive, but this can only be spread to other cats! This means, however, that he should be your only cat. If you’re looking for a very sweet and loving cat, stop by the shelter and give him a chance! Adoption fee is $8.
«
LOLLI is a lovely, tiger-striped female cat with beautiful green eyes. She’s doing well at the shelter, but she loves attention and occasionally will “sing” a little something for us. With a little time and love, she could be the perfect cat. Stop by the shelter today to see if she’s the right one for you! Adoption fee is $35.

LANDON is a handsome guy who is a little on the shy side. As time has passed he has become more friendly toward everyone he meets. Comedy Continues In Cape May ADVERTISING FEATURE
A
FTER Brad Zimmerman had us laughing in the aisles a week ago, the Second Stage builds on that hilarity to bring back Dave Konig on June 6th in The Further Adventures of A Hebrew School Dropout. Dave Konig was so popular we had to turn away forty people last season. He is back in a totally new show. With Say Goodnight Gracie playing on the main stage, it only makes sense for us to continue bringing you 21st century versions of George Burns to our stage. On June 13, two comics – Aaron and Nick – are coming to keep the momentum going in An Evening of Stand Up. All of these comedy shows are at 8pm on Monday nights. Tickets can be reserved online at capemaystage.com or by calling 884-1341. With only about two weeks left to see Say Goodnight, Gracie, don’t miss Joel Rooks who played George Burns on Broadway. Besides being a poignant love story and filled with hilarious anecdotes about the life of George Burns, this is a play about survival. Burns and Allen survived the death of vaudeville to become stars of radio and talking pictures and that new invention called television. There is an audible gasp when Joel Rooks is first revealed as George Burns. The archival footage and Gracie voice-overs are from the Broadway production, as well. Playwright Rupert Holmes was nominated for a Tony Award in the Broadway production. See it here for a third of what you would pay in New York. Look at our “Dinner-and-a-Show” options and save

Right: Aaron Kominos-Smith and Nick Cobb have been seen on Comedy Central, MTV, and NBCs “Last Comic Standing”. They’re bringing their personal brand of comedy to Cape May Stage on June 13. even more. The actors for Theresa Rebeck’s The Understudy will be arriving from New York next week to begin rehearsals for the next main stage production. Cape May Stage is a whirlwind of activity. Once July arrives, the Women of Broadway Series kicks into high gear with Liz Callaway, Maureen McGovern and Tovah Feldshuh. Bird Droppings
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
T
HIS is a tribute to Tom. Tom Parsons. Birder, tutor, benefactor, CMBO Associate Naturalist, friend. Tom died on May 15 in his 80th year. He left in the hearts of those who knew him an admiration almost big enough to bridge the gap his passing caused. If you lived in Cape May and nearby environs you knew Tom, or at least recognized him on sight. He was the binocularshod man who walked everywhere, pausing now and again to make notations on his pad. Tom, you see, never learned to drive a car. He didn’t need to. Biped locomotion served him well and, living as he did in Cape May, he could go pretty nearly anywhere he cared to go on foot. A host of friends were there at need in the event that some car-driven service was called for. Before moving to Lower Township, Tom was a professor of zoology at the University of Toronto. He earned his doctorate at Harvard. Becoming apprized of this I once asked
Tom whether he knew E.O. Wilson, the famed entomologist. He and Tom were about the same age, so I wondered whether their paths had ever crossed at Harvard. “No,” Tom pronounced. “I’m not familiar with E.O. Wilson.” Somewhat surprised, I persisted. Certainly he knew of E.O. Wilson. In environmental circles he was something of a
god. Something I said finally clicked and Tom said: “Oh. You mean Ed? Oh, sure, we were classmates.” Well, E.O. Wilson deserves his fame. Among those who knew him, Tom Parsons enjoys equal standing. What I admired most about Tom was his directness. There was no such thing as an uncomfortable truth. There was just truth. He spoke his mind freely and frankly, and when others were too timid to point out a bad idea, Tom raised his hand but never his voice. Another thing I liked about Tom was his studied focus upon birds and the knowledge he brought to bear. Where other people are content to simply pin a name to a bird or check it off on a list, Tom used the occasion of a bird finding to offer insight. He was a teacher first, birder second, and on CMBO field trips, participants were commonly treated to half a dozen elucidating insights per two-hour session.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 105 He was near impervious to weather. Rain, sleet, snow and bitter cold affected him as little as heat and humidity. It was common to see him standing in the Bird Observatory near blue with cold, coffee cup in hand, recharging his batteries for the next leg of his daily survey. Other people go birding. Tom used his eyes, ears and knowledge base to seine discoveries from the world which he shared with the rest of us. Many years ago, back when the CMBO was in its infancy, the professor used to come down and take birding workshops. Then he started vacationing in Cape May. Finally he and his wife Peg moved here. The natural-born teacher didn’t end his teaching career when he left the university. Instead his talents morphed. He became a CMBO Associate Naturalist and brought his skills and intellect to bear on the many thousands of visitors who f lock to Cape May, drawn, as Tom was, to the wealth of birds here. Among Associate Naturalists he assumed a position of leadership. He didn’t win it. He very simply was granted it by those who came to know and respect him.
A candid shot of Tom at the Hawkwatch Platform. The CMBO has been lucky to have counted upon the talents of many fine naturalists. Among them Fred Mears, Pat Sutton, Don Freiday, George Myers, Mark Garland and many others. Tom was both akin and unique. Now he shares with Fred Mears and George Myers the distinction of having lived the span of their lives and moved on to whatever marvelous discoveries follow. If there are field trips in the afterlife,
the smart money says that Tom Parsons has already signed on to lead them. If I knew where or how to register, my name would be down on the roster now, and my delight at finding Tom at the head of the line profound. Tom left behind a large family of fellow birders; although not related in blood, certainly in spirit and passion. The Cape May Bird Observatory is planning a tribute to Tom; hopefully on a beautiful fall day and probably around the Hawkwatch Platform. In lieu of f lowers, his “family” at the CMBO urge everyone to simply take a nature walk. The greatest tribute anyone could pay to Tom is to just go outside and talk a walk; and when you look up and see birds f lying over, think of Tom and thank him for sharing his passion for the natural world. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
I
WANT some guy in my life. When I say it like this, I sound like my standards are pathetically low. But this isn’t the case at all. There are “all” guys (those who want exclusivity, commitment, maybe even marriage), and there are “nothing” guys (those who want meaningless sex only). But I don’t want all or nothing; I want some. A “some” guy is into dating. Just simple dating. A dinner here, a movie there, and yea, a little late-night rendezvousing to the tune of Marvin Gaye. I don’t need a man I can tell my deep dark secrets to, I don’t need someone who will toss out all of the other numbers in his little black book, and I don’t need someone to run off and buy me a ring. But I also don’t want someone who can’t seem to remember my first name, someone who only remembers my phone number after three shots of whiskey. It would be nice to find a man interested in something between the booty call and the marriage vow.
A “some” guy. In every other area, I'm an all-or-nothing kind of girl. If I’m in the mood to clean, I don’t just break out a Swiffer, I get down on all fours to scrub the baseboards before working on the bathtub caulk with a toothbrush. I clean everything, or I clean nothing. If I want to relax, I’ll devote my entire night to it – bubble bath, junk food, and From Here to Eternity on cable. I figure, I might as well go all out; otherwise, what’s the point? So yes, I am an all-or-nothing kind of
girl. Except for dating. Yesterday, the neighbor girl came to visit. When I asked if she’s seeing any of the boys she met at college, she told me that “no one dates anymore.” And she’s right. For twenty-somethings today, it seems the choice is between a committed relationship which makes seeing other people strictly off-limits, or just hooking up, which makes for the walk of shame down Beach Avenue at six in the morning. It’s the middle ground that we’ve lost. It seems so unfair that if I want a guy to enjoy Cape May with, someone to join me for a day on the beach or a slice of Blue Moon pizza, I need to find a serious boyfriend. Otherwise, I’m all on my own. I’m sick of ping-ponging between the world of all and the world of nothing. It’s exhausting. I want the world of some. But until I find “some” guy, I’m learning to enjoy watching From Here to Eternity and eating that slice of Blue Moon pizza on my own – no booty caller, no boyfriend. And, to be honest, it’s not as bad as I make it seem sometimes. After all, in a world of all or nothing, knowing oneself is everything.

The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."
W
ITH so many sequels out there on films I haven't even had the desire to see the original (Kung Fu Panda? Really?), I was about to boycott all summer sequels. But I had to see Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. When the first Pirates came out in 2003, it was love at first "Arrrrgh!" Depp was one of the most endearing pirates ever as Jack Sparrow, and Geoffrey Rush was remarkable as Captain Barbossa. To say it is one of my favorite pirate movies is an understatement. When they produced a sequel a few years later, I was excited – then disappointed. The second installment and for that matter the third one, which was released just one year later were scattered at best, stretching for a story that just wasn't understandable or engaging. Terrible. Now there’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The premise is simple – Barbossa (now in service of the King of England) and Jack Sparrow are in search of the Fountain of Youth. How to drink from the fountain is not so simple – and this where this film is redeemed. It would seem that the producers of Pirates have

Depp is charismatic as ever in "Stranger Tides," an improvement on prior "Pirates" sequels. decided to pull back, regroup, and keep the plot less complicated, with the same simple twists that made the first film so enjoyable. Add to the mix Ian McShane, who masterfully plays the legendary Blackbeard, and you've got the makings of an installment finally worthy of (although not fully comparable to) the original.
Penelope Cruz is also new to the series, and there isn’t the same chemistry between her and Depp as with former lead actress Kiera Knightley (who said that the franchise was exciting at the time but behind her now). The whole Fountain of Youth scenario seems a little played out. I wasn't impressed with the first half of the film with all of its chase scenes (so far as you can have chase scenes with horses and carriages), and even the swashbuckling seemed tired. But the mermaid scene engages you, and the film truly picks up in the second half until you actually want to see all the components come together in the end. Integral to the plot is the concept of mermaid’s tears, reminding me of the short film we did with Teitelman students and Gail Schmidtchen a few years back. Gail is returning for this year’s film camp June 27 through July 1; find out more at capemayfilm.org or call 609-884-6700. Final note: I saw about 30 minutes of The Hangover 2 – horrible. I triple-dog dare anyone to write up a review highlighting any redeeming qualities of the movie beyond “it made me laugh.” Email us at capemayfilm@ hotmail.com.

The Real Estate Column
W
Chris Bezaire on the latest trends and sales on the island
ELCOME back to your one-stop shop for all of the latest real estate transactions here in the Cape May area. This week we are looking back to all of the deals between May 11 and May 25 here in the area. During this time there were a ton of transactions..... a whole five of them! If that sounds slow, it is actually an increase from the beginning of the year when we had only about six or eight transactions in a whole month. Good news for the agents and property owners because I will mention all of them in this issue! Unless the agent is from out of town, because as you all know, this is a Cape May publication and we don't talk about people from elsewhere! We will start with the highest sale and work our way down to the lowest. A home on 24 Ocean Street was listed by Jim Zeitler, affectionately called Jimmy Z., of Jersey Cape Realty and sold by Becky "Boot Camp" Chamberlain of Coastline Realty for
$1,239,000. Next we have 911 Stockton, which was listed by Joe Foley also of Jersey Cape Realty and sold by Jan Conwell of Homestead Real Estate for $822,820 – apparently a nice round number just wasn't good enough. We also have 15 Broadway, known as the Driftwood Condos, Unit #26 which was listed by Barry "The Suit" Bruno and sold by "BBQ" Ken Hutchinson for $395,000. (If you haven't tried Ken's BBQ yet, you should!) Next there was 1231 Ohio Avenue, listed by "Boot Camp" Becky Chamberlain
(seriously, have you seen her arms?) and sold by Ami "For the last time please don't call me Carol" Menz of Coastline Realty for $365,000. Finally we have 32 Jackson Street Unit 4, known as the Puffin, listed by Carol Anderson of Coastline Realty and sold by Margaret Bethel also of Coastline for $275,000. For those of you interested in Cape May Point and West Cape May, I'll guess you will just have to keep waiting... I got nothin for ya' just now. It is nice to be back and writing again this summer. I know sales will be picking up as the temperature rises. If you would like any information on any of these transactions, or would like to recieve my weekly, monthly or quarterly updates feel free to contact me. See you again in two weeks. Chris Bezaire is a fifth generation real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Real Estate in Cape May. He can be reached at 609972-6927, or by email at chris@capemaychris. com.
