Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

What A Grand Old Time LAST Thursday was a busy day at Exit Zero Global HQ. There was last-minute painting to be done by our favorite handyman, Oscar Nunez; there were EZ-embroidered beach towels to be hung (and Swain’s, we might add, sells a dizzying array of hooks for just such a task); and there were carpets to be cleaned, pictures to be hung and naked manequins to be dressed. (And, oh yea, some of that pesky publishing to get done, too.) Amongst all this flurry, there was a nervous energy. When you invite the entire town to a grand opening party, you can’t help but worry: What if no one turns up?

But you didn’t disappoint us, Cape May. Around 300 people visited our little store (well, not-so-little store, anymore)... and four dogs (including a ridiculously cute, 110pound Bernese Mountain dog called Lester who garnered almost as much attention as our expanded shop.) And what’s more: you came bearing gifts! A big thanks to Mason Cottage innkeeper Patti Goyette for the delicious treats... we’re indulging in your chocolate chip cookies as we type this.

There was such a crowd, in fact, we ran out of the food supplied to us by the Depot Market Café and Seaside Cheese — we had to order pizza (thank you, Blue Moon!) — but we did NOT run out of booze, though this was not for lack of drinking.

“I’m okay working,” shopkeeper Jeanine Recupero told us as she rung up an Exit Zero travel mug for a customer, “because I’m on my third Exit Zero cocktail.” This tasty concoction, if you want to know, was made with Kraken rum and orange juice, and it garnered almost as much attention as the two beautiful bartenders, Virginia Hotel

employees Helen Linney and Gina Peterson, who were serving it. (Helen told us that many of the party-goers had bets going as to how old she might be so, to settle any outstanding debates... twenty-three.)

Something no one debated was the outstanding musical ability of Kate Delany Chew, whose picture you can see on the opposite page. Kate slings burritos at Big Wave during the day and impresses with her enchanting voice and acousitc guitar skills all over Cape May at night. But our favorite thing about Kate? She’s a good sport. When we asked her to play while sitting perched atop our authentic CMBP lifeguard stand, she chuckled and climbed on up. “It wasn’t anymore difficult,” she told us. “I was chilling up there, totally in awe of the new store.”

We were especially happy to see people spilling onto the porch; being outside on such a mild night reminds us that spring is around the corner. When West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern told us we should “do this every Thursday,” it got us thinking... that’s not a bad idea! Perhaps there are some barbeques in our near future... hmmm.

We were so thrilled to hear how much you loved our new merchandise (we think those handmade tables printed with old Cape May postcards are pretty groovy, too), but we were even happier to see everyone mingling. We caught Jack Fichter of the Herald conversing with Chris South of the Star and Wave. We saw Gayle Stahlhuth of East Lynne Theater Company picking from the same cheese plate as Alicia Grasso, marketing director for Cape May Stage. We saw local hotel owners and shop owners and restaurant owners laughing it up over a glass of local wine provided by Cape May Winery.

Just another reminder of why we love living

in a small town, where you’re competition are also your neighbors and your friends.

We think that’s a reason to celebrate all on its own.

If you didn’t make it to the party, come see the new store. It’s pretty spectacular, if we do say so ourselves.

Stage Fright JOURNALISTS often get a bad rap as stirrers of the pot. We love tragedy, some people say, because it makes for a great story. We hunt down the source of scurrilous rumors, in order to publish scandal and sell more papers. But that’s not always true. Sure, we have an obligation to print the truth, and sometimes, that means confirming those scurrilous rumors. But often times, like in this case, it means debunking them.

This week, we got wind that Convention Hall’s portable stage is small... too small, some said, to support Peter Nero and his 62 Philadelphia Pops, who are supposed to open the venue with a Memorial Day weekend concert. This would be tragic, considering the amount of contention already surrounding the Convention Hall project.

We called Mayor Ed Mahaney (we figured it would be a waste of time calling City Manager Bruce MacLeod), who told us that the stage will be 900-square-feet most of the time, with an option to enlarge it by another 135-square feet. Then we called George Muller, Manager of Production Operations and Artistic Administration for the Philadelphia Pops. “That’s plenty of space,” he told us. So there you have it (though we couldn’t resist publishing the cartoon on the next page).

ANYONE ELSE WORRIED ABOUT FITTING THE PHILADELPHIA POPS ON TO THE STAGE AT CONVENTION HALL?

Spicy Little Numbers YOU say you’re looking to spice things up a bit? And we’re not talking Lovejoy’s or Lace Silhouettes here. We’re talking about Love The Cook, where any Cape May cook in the know can get his or her hands on their spice of choice. We popped in for a chat with store manager Barb Gruver to see which spices please the masses these days. And since Barb’s been with Love The Cook for 18 years, we figure she knows what she’s talking about.

“These are absolutely flying out of here,” Barb tells us, gesturing towards a display of Dean Jacobs Bread Dipping Seasonings.

“They are so good – the Parmesan and

Tuscany Blends especially.” These little round tins feature seasonings that you can mix with olive oil for bread-dipping, a less artery-crippling option than butter.

And since we are talking spicy here, we couldn’t help but gravitate over to the hot sauce wall, which is lined with bottles of zesty elixirs designed to hop up any dish.

Call us crazy (it’s been done) but our eyes were drawn immediately to Dave’s Insanity Sauce. Apparently, it’s quite appropriatelynamed – Barb says she’s seen Dave at food shows and he wears a straitjacket the entire time. Barb tells us the biggest hot sauce sellers at Love The Cook are the Kiss Your

Ass Goodbye and the Smack My Ass And Call Me Sally offerings. We guessed — and we were correct — that the names and accompanying label illustrations featuring um, hineys, have something to do with that. “Graphics are everything,” Barb says, “Absolutely everything.”

And keeping in the rear-end vein, she says the Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning by Walker & Sons ($5.99) is also a big seller.

“It’s simply salt, pepper and cayenne,” she says. “But in absolutely perfect proportions.” If you’re looking to up the ante on your culinary endeavors, get your butt over to Love The Cook.

AS OUR Historical Editor Ben Miller pointed out this week, the Nor’Easter that destroyed the old Convention Hall, along with the city’s wooden boardwalk, and damaged hundreds of buildings around town, happened 50 years ago this week. A Moment In History Historical Editor Ben Miller looks at S Mary By-The-Sea

T

HE new “Winter Hotel Building” mentioned in the article above was known as the Shoreham when it opened that year, with 150 rooms and over a thousand feet of porches with tremendous views of the Atlantic Ocean.

It was renowned as one of the best hotels in the country and yet, it was forced to close its doors and sold in 1898, when it was renamed the Home for Aged and Infirm Colored People.

That venture failed as well and 10 years later the building was again closed. The building’s early years were eerily reminiscent of the Hotel Cape May built on the other side of the island. Beautiful building in a great location, but nobody could make it work.

In 1909, the old Shoreham felt divine intervention when the Sisters of Saint Joseph came upon it through the help of Reverend Daniel McDermott. They purchased the building and after a brief renovation, renamed it Saint Mary by-the-Sea. From that point on, the Shoreham had a new purpose, one that has endured for over 100 years. Saint Mary by-the-Sea is a religious retreat for reflection and communing with God, for the Sisters of Saint Joseph and their invited guests.

Sleeping Around

Every week, we test the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Queen Victoria.

WHERE IS IT? The Queen Victoria is located on Ocean Street — one block from the mall, one block from the beach.

WHAT IS IT? The Queen Victoria is actually four separate historic and lovingly restored buildings, with a total of 34 rooms.

WHO RUNS IT? The inn is run by husband and wife team Doug and Anna Marie McMain, who gave up careers in the computer industry to make their dream of living by the beach in Cape May a reality. Oh, and they do it with the help of a staff of 18.

WHAT’S THE VIBE? The vibe is spotless, elegant, understated, not a single detail overlooked. If the Queen Victoria were a lady, you’d describe her as not having a hair out of place.

AMENITIES? Not enough space here, but we’ll scratch the surface. There are fresh flowers in the common areas, a fireplace and piano in the parlor, and a 24-hour guest pantry with complimentary coffee, tea and cold drinks. Along with the usual bathroom toiletries, you’ll find Queen Victoria Bayberry soap — and a plastic baggie to take it home — as well as a sewing kit and

Queen Victoria lip balm. In our closet was a safe, ironing board, two luxurious bathrobes and an oversized umbrella. The QV’s turn-down service includes two bedside chocolate coins — way to impress us.

WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? We had an elegant four-poster bed with a charming lace canopy in the Prince of Wales room,, along with a sitting area with two comfy chairs and ottoman — perfect for viewing the beach out the bay windows.

WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST? We had a savory broccoli frittata and sausage links, and a delicious slice of almond cake. There

was also fresh fruit, yogurt, and homemade granola, as well as a selection of juices, coffee and tea, English muffins, bagels, and fresh-baked muffins.

OTHER REFRESHMENTS? Tea time (4-5:30 daily), was in full swing when we checked in, with cakes, cookies, and savory warm roasted red pepper dip and crackers.

We helped ourselves to decaf peach tea and a piece of yogurt cake. Okay, we had two pieces of cake, but it was yogurt cake.

INSIDER TIP: Customer service at the QV is a cut above. We had a last minute reservation change, handled seamlessly by head reservation clerk, Maria, who has been with The QV for 16 years. She calls it her Cape May home. You will too.

RANDOM FACT: Sherwin Williams donated the paint for the initial re-painting of The Queen Victoria in 1981 in exchange for putting the building on the cover of the brochure for their new (at the time) line of historic paint colors.

The Cape May Crossword

And by the way, if these “anyones” in your life are dependent upon you for food and shelter, you’d better get your butt into any shop or restaurant in town and fill out an application for employment for the coming season.

Dear Answer Lady I was at the Exit Zero Grand Opening party last week, and I ran into at least three people who said “Hi, Bill – how’s it going?”

I’m mortified to admit that I had no idea of their names in two cases, and in one, I didn’t even recognize the face! I own a small business in town, and while I do get out to eat or for a drink once in a while, but I’m not exactly a social butterfly. How can I do better at remembering names?— I’d Like to Buy a Clue Dear Clue The Answer Lady used to have a memory like a steel trap, but the busier (and older) one gets, the less room in one’s brain for such trivial things as passwords and PIN numbers, where the car is parked, what day of the week it is, much less who that vaguely familiar-looking guy is that’s frantically waving from across the bar at the Pilot House. The Answer Lady once spent a tortured dinner at Lucky Bones, trying to place the woman at the next table for two hours. (Of course, she finally broke down and asked her husband, who took one glance and said, “She works at the post office.”) Honesty is the best policy here: offer a big smile, a firm handshake, and direct eye contact, followed by, “I’m so sorry – I’m terrible with names — please remind me of yours.”

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

REMEMBER it like it was yesterday, the day I discovered curry, and brought the secret back to the western world at great personal pain. I had been hiking in the Himalayas, alone against the elements save for my snow-leopard cape and my Lee Enfield Repeating Rifle. My plan had been to discover Shangri-La (the mystical lost city, not the infamous den of sin in Atlantic City, though that was an adventure in itself, and certainly my Lee Enfield was more than useful in that hellish place), but I had had no luck, finding only the remains of Noah’s Ark (remarkably well preserved, I must say, and with some two dozen pairs of animal skeletons in one of the bottom holds, that must have been forgotten in the rush to get to land after the Deluge. I always DID wonder what had happened to the Unicorn, the Chimera, the Dragon and the Slug of Eternal Ecstasy), a whole monastery of Dalai Llamas and a diamond as big as a man’s head.

Anyways, I stayed the night at a hilltop fort, and a silent monk was cooking a

dish of strange aroma and color, in an iron pot. It was as orange as a harvest moon, the texture of stew, and sitting downwind, myself and three other travelers had to keep shuffling around, as the vapor caused us to choke.

We were all hungry: I had walked 100 miles that day, there was a Chinese fur trader who bore the scars of skinning a Great Bear using only his fingernails, a brutish Mongol warrior who wore ears around his neck, and yet had no ears of his

own, and an English nobleman in military dress who peered at us through a monocle.

The monk finally spoke, and told us that he was making the hottest curry in the land, and were we man enough to sample it?

I never turn down a challenge, and the others were similarly inclined, and so we had a little bowl placed in front of us, and were each handed a scarred, pitted metal spoon.

We all supped at the same time.

Instantly, the English fellow shrieked and burst into flames, the Chinese trader bit off his own tongue and ran off a cliff and the Mongol warrior clutched his hands to the ears around his neck, and fell down stone dead. For my part, I was wondering why I had swallowed a lump of molten lava, and calculating how far down through the earth it would melt once it exited the smoking ruin of my bottom.

Oddly, once the pain passed – three hours later – I craved more. The monk happily passed me the secret, at gunpoint, and now, friends, I am planning that very same dish as a special meal for you all. Invites will follow.

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Chili And Chowder Cook-Off.

OU know who you are. You’re no stranger to quinoa and arugula.

You know when to buy local and when to buy organic. You’re harder on a chef than Tom Colicchio. You’re a foodie, and this is your event.

The Chili and Chowder Cook-Off, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, will be held on March 10 at the Marquis de Lafayette.

Cape May’s professional and home chefs will present their dishes for the public to judge. It’s bound to be a challenge - it’s hard to even get consensus on the definition of “chili” and “chowder.” When does meat stew become chili? When does fish soup become chowder? And which one is the best? Judging will be a tough job, but you are up to the challenge.

Do you like your chowder to be creamy or brothy, white or red? Is is still chowder if you don’t use clams? White chowder came first recipes featuring cod and biscuits have been a staple of American cookbooks since 1828.

Red wasn’t far behind - an 1830 recipe calls for tomato catsup and crackers. The inclusion

of pork fat or bacon is what turns a fish stew into a chowder. Or else it’s optional. Even the root of the word “chowder” is debated. It may come from the Latin “calderia” for “pot” or the Old English “jowter” for “fish peddler.” And if you think the chowder fans are contentious, the chili folks are equally divided.

“Chili” includes chili peppers, but beyond

that, anything goes. What makes a meat stew “chili” is open to interpretation. Beans, meat, and tomato are required, unless you’re in Texas, where beans are omitted. The spicy chili pepper was imported from the Canary Islands, or else it is native. The spice was added to keep food fresh, or to mask the taste of fresh-killed beef. Chuck wagon cooks invented the dish, unless it was the “chili queens” who sold it from carts, or the Pueblo Indians who served it to Coronado to console him when he failed to find his cities of gold.

These issues won’t be resolved at the Marquis de Lafayette on Saturday, March 10, but you won’t care. You get to taste it all.

The savory smells will surround you as you wander from crock pot to crock pot, a satisfied smile on your face. Keep notes - even if your favorite chef doesn’t win, you’ll want to visit her restaurant again and again. For more information, call 609-884-5508.

TAYLOR Mahon is setting high goals for herself. Mahon not only plays three sports, but she is also currently ranked second in the sophomore class. She is clearly very well-rounded.

Even though Mahon plays sports, her top priority is her education.

She strives to do well in school so she can keep her horizons as broad as possible.

“I cannot stand being bored. Being so involved keeps me on my toes and I like the challenge,” said Mahon of her hectic schedule.

Being involved in sports and various extracurricular activities may seem like a challenge, but Mahon has been doing it for so many years that it just comes naturally to her.

She is involved in LCMR’s TV Media program and would like to have a future in broadcasting. Mahon plans to attend college at New York University, Villanova, or Princeton. Her dream school is Villanova.

While at college, Mahon plans to major in pre-law and minor in Communications.

“I dream big,” said Mahon.

By the looks of it, Taylor Mahon is definitely setting herself up to make her dreams come true.

Act Like A Seasoned Pro ADVERTISING FEATURE

APE May Stage continues to celebrate the New Jersey Theatre Alliance Stages Festival by offering free theatre workshops. The goal is to equip attendees, through improvisation and the playing of fun theatre games, with the strategies professional artists use, as these techniques can apply so well to everyday life. On Monday March 12, Artistic Director Roy Steinberg will be at the Ocean City Community Center (1735 Simpson Avenue in Ocean City) at 10am and at the Cape May Court House Library (30 Mechanic Street) at 6pm. The following Monday, March 19, Roy Steinberg will be at the Sea Isle City Library, (4800 Central Avenue) at 6pm. These hour long sessions are open to all ages and levels of experience.

“The theatre offers everyone techniques that help people work together, use good breathing for muscular relaxation and tap into creativity and sensitivity for leading a more fulfilling life,” says Steinberg. “The very exercises that actors use to train their instrument are applicable for sports or business or social dealings,” Television shows like Whose Line Is It, Anyway? brought improvisation into the living rooms of many Americans. The workshops will use some games that involve no words as well as some scripted material.
